Maddie Walker, her canine partner Robo, and Maddie's husband, veterinarian
52
00:03:19.900 --> 00:03:23.949
Cole Walker. And together they solve crimes that affect animals.
53
00:03:24.270 --> 00:03:28.069
and impact their peaceful community of Timber Creek. And with
54
00:03:28.129 --> 00:03:31.009
us today to introduce the latest release in the Timber
55
00:03:31.050 --> 00:03:37.020
Creek Canine Mystery Series, Fighting Edge, is award-winning author Margaret Misushima.
56
00:03:37.060 --> 00:03:40.219
Welcome back to the show, Margaret. Oh, thank you.
57
00:03:40.460 --> 00:03:43.759
The annual visit I get to have with you is
58
00:03:43.780 --> 00:03:45.360
a highlight of my year.
59
00:03:45.379 --> 00:03:45.439
So.
60
00:03:46.689 --> 00:03:49.650
Thank you for having me on the show. Oh, no,
61
00:03:49.710 --> 00:03:50.569
it's our pleasure.
62
00:03:50.669 --> 00:03:53.150
And we're so delighted to be talking with you about
63
00:03:53.289 --> 00:03:57.990
Fighting Edge, the latest release in your amazing Timber Creek
64
00:03:58.030 --> 00:03:59.400
Canine Mysteries.
65
00:04:00.000 --> 00:04:01.340
Well, thank you.
66
00:04:01.800 --> 00:04:06.259
It is book 11 in the series. And so I've
67
00:04:06.280 --> 00:04:09.340
been hard at work for over 10 years getting these
68
00:04:09.400 --> 00:04:10.620
books out, one a year.
69
00:04:11.139 --> 00:04:13.219
Well, and it gives me something to look forward to.
70
00:04:13.240 --> 00:04:16.449
Yeah. And, you know, it's really been an honor because
71
00:04:16.829 --> 00:04:20.129
we have had you as our guest since the debut
72
00:04:20.149 --> 00:04:22.970
of the first book in the Timber Creek Canine Mystery Series,
73
00:04:23.269 --> 00:04:27.000
Killing Trail. For our first-time listeners, can you just share
74
00:04:27.040 --> 00:04:30.160
a bit about yourself because you have such a diverse
75
00:04:30.300 --> 00:04:31.639
and interesting background?
76
00:04:32.100 --> 00:04:32.579
Thank you.
77
00:04:32.740 --> 00:04:37.610
It is a little different for someone who writes police procedurals.
78
00:04:38.110 --> 00:04:42.069
I am a retired speech therapist, but I'm married to
79
00:04:42.149 --> 00:04:47.699
a retired veterinarian. And so after I retired, I decided
80
00:04:47.800 --> 00:04:52.060
I really wanted to write fiction. and ended up writing
81
00:04:52.100 --> 00:04:57.060
this mystery. You mentioned the title, Killing Trail. It uses
82
00:04:57.079 --> 00:05:00.420
a lot of the scenes and things that I have
83
00:05:00.519 --> 00:05:07.199
observed over 40 years with my veterinarian husband. And so
84
00:05:07.439 --> 00:05:10.560
it just made sense to me that Cole Walker would
85
00:05:10.620 --> 00:05:13.910
be a vet. And then I was trying to decide
86
00:05:14.149 --> 00:05:18.629
what to do with that because veterinarians aren't called to
87
00:05:19.129 --> 00:05:25.389
investigate murder mysteries very often, if ever. So I decided, well,
88
00:05:25.449 --> 00:05:30.040
it only makes sense to pair my protagonist that I
89
00:05:30.079 --> 00:05:33.720
really want to have with another protagonist who is a
90
00:05:33.759 --> 00:05:35.680
canine handler and would.
91
00:05:35.519 --> 00:05:37.980
Be a love interest for veterinarians.
92
00:05:38.160 --> 00:05:43.050
Cole. And that's when Maddie Walker was born. In the
93
00:05:43.089 --> 00:05:46.490
first book, she is named Maddie Cobb, and her dog
94
00:05:46.550 --> 00:05:52.810
is Robo. He is a large male German shepherd, and
95
00:05:53.220 --> 00:05:55.180
he doesn't just sit in the vehicle.
96
00:05:55.360 --> 00:05:56.079
He is an.
97
00:05:57.560 --> 00:06:02.819
Integral part of solving the case. And so these books
98
00:06:02.939 --> 00:06:07.649
have a lot of outdoor scenes as well as canine
99
00:06:07.709 --> 00:06:12.610
handling action. And the three of them just are busy
100
00:06:12.769 --> 00:06:15.670
finding clues to solve the mysteries.
101
00:06:15.389 --> 00:06:16.389
In all of the books.
102
00:06:16.649 --> 00:06:20.339
And over the series, the reader gets to follow the
103
00:06:20.379 --> 00:06:24.519
love story between Maddie and Cole because they meet for
104
00:06:24.560 --> 00:06:27.899
the first time in book one, and then they marry
105
00:06:28.139 --> 00:06:32.329
in book nine. So they've been married now for a
106
00:06:32.410 --> 00:06:37.350
couple of books, and they are merging their family, and
107
00:06:37.470 --> 00:06:39.439
there's a lot that goes into that, too.
108
00:06:40.000 --> 00:06:44.980
Now, Robo, is Robo based on a real dog?
109
00:06:45.000 --> 00:06:49.870
Because Robo, Maddie and Cole are amazing, but Robo, whoa.
110
00:06:50.610 --> 00:06:55.699
He is based on a real dog. He was inspired
111
00:06:55.879 --> 00:07:00.300
by a dog that one of my consultants that I
112
00:07:00.360 --> 00:07:05.329
had early on in the series handled in Bellingham, Washington.
113
00:07:05.829 --> 00:07:10.529
And that German Shepherd's name was Robo. And my consultant
114
00:07:10.649 --> 00:07:15.680
taught me so much about dogs. what it was like
115
00:07:15.899 --> 00:07:19.879
being on a police force in an urban area. And
116
00:07:19.959 --> 00:07:24.620
she told me so many stories about Robo's skill set
117
00:07:25.240 --> 00:07:29.069
and all of the things he had done and how
118
00:07:29.129 --> 00:07:34.170
he saved her life many times. And yes, Robo was
119
00:07:34.230 --> 00:07:39.110
a real dog. He was deafened in an explosion in
120
00:07:39.170 --> 00:07:45.259
a warehouse. He was trained to detect narcotics and not explosives.
121
00:07:45.360 --> 00:07:48.680
And they were clearing a warehouse for narcotics when this
122
00:07:48.759 --> 00:07:53.459
bomb went off. And Robo was too close and he
123
00:07:53.639 --> 00:07:59.959
was deafened. And my consultant became ill from the chemical exposure.
124
00:07:59.980 --> 00:08:04.189
And they both retired and she got to take him
125
00:08:04.639 --> 00:08:07.769
as her pet. So he lived the rest of his
126
00:08:07.870 --> 00:08:13.139
life with her. It's astonishing what goes on with these
127
00:08:13.220 --> 00:08:16.759
dogs and how much they know and how much they
128
00:08:16.800 --> 00:08:18.379
can help a police force.
129
00:08:18.959 --> 00:08:22.879
And it's really nice knowing that this is actually based
130
00:08:22.959 --> 00:08:25.079
on a real dog who actually did this, a real
131
00:08:25.120 --> 00:08:29.540
police dog. And by being a character in your book,
132
00:08:30.319 --> 00:08:31.339
he'll live on forever.
133
00:08:31.420 --> 00:08:34.460
His legacy is forever. So thank you for doing that.
134
00:08:35.250 --> 00:08:37.049
Oh, I was so grateful.
135
00:08:37.250 --> 00:08:39.830
I asked her if I could use his name because
136
00:08:39.909 --> 00:08:42.090
I thought it was just the perfect name for a
137
00:08:42.600 --> 00:08:47.500
police dog. And she said, yes, that would be so
138
00:08:47.580 --> 00:08:51.419
wonderful for his name to live on as a big
139
00:08:51.460 --> 00:08:52.740
German shepherd.
140
00:08:52.379 --> 00:08:53.120
Who is crying.
141
00:08:53.139 --> 00:08:57.409
He is. Well, as many of my listeners know, and
142
00:08:58.710 --> 00:09:00.889
everyone listening today will know, that I have been a
143
00:09:00.929 --> 00:09:04.080
big fan of your books since I read Killing Trail,
144
00:09:04.129 --> 00:09:07.740
the first book in the series. And I always find
145
00:09:07.779 --> 00:09:10.039
myself totally invested, like, in the growth of.
146
00:09:10.039 --> 00:09:14.549
Maddie, Robo, Cole... And though.
147
00:09:14.399 --> 00:09:17.090
Each of the books that you write can be read
148
00:09:17.149 --> 00:09:21.549
as a standalone, do you agree with me that it's
149
00:09:21.629 --> 00:09:25.490
so worthwhile to read all of the books, 11 to date,
150
00:09:25.549 --> 00:09:30.409
including the new Fighting Edge, just to know the background?
151
00:09:30.529 --> 00:09:32.509
And even though they all stand alone and all of
152
00:09:32.549 --> 00:09:35.759
their situations stand alone, just I've become a part of it.
153
00:09:35.789 --> 00:09:39.090
I feel like I'm part of their family. But can
154
00:09:39.129 --> 00:09:40.600
you tell us, what do you think about that?
155
00:09:41.139 --> 00:09:46.580
You are part of our family. I agree to the.
156
00:09:46.259 --> 00:09:52.299
Extent that if you want the entire arc for these characters,
157
00:09:52.850 --> 00:09:55.169
you might want to read all of the books in
158
00:09:55.190 --> 00:09:55.870
the series.
159
00:09:56.409 --> 00:09:57.230
It's also, I.
160
00:09:57.730 --> 00:10:01.820
Think, a type of book that can be read quickly,
161
00:10:01.980 --> 00:10:06.360
so it kind of lends itself to binge reading if
162
00:10:06.460 --> 00:10:10.980
people like to do that during a vacation or over
163
00:10:11.019 --> 00:10:16.049
a long weekend. Each book does stand alone, and people
164
00:10:16.129 --> 00:10:20.549
can hop in Any time in the series, they could
165
00:10:20.629 --> 00:10:23.669
even hop in with Fighting Edge if they want to,
166
00:10:24.110 --> 00:10:28.509
and then go back and either listen to or read
167
00:10:29.009 --> 00:10:32.889
the rest of the series. The books are available in
168
00:10:32.990 --> 00:10:37.000
hardcover paperback. and audio versions.
169
00:10:37.559 --> 00:10:39.220
The hardcovers are no.
170
00:10:39.120 --> 00:10:43.210
Longer available for the early books, but they are always
171
00:10:43.230 --> 00:10:48.789
in ebook format and can be either found in libraries
172
00:10:49.389 --> 00:10:54.769
or purchased at your favorite ebook seller the later books
173
00:10:54.850 --> 00:10:58.409
I'd say the last five books are still available in
174
00:10:58.490 --> 00:11:01.429
print if you like to hold a print book I'm
175
00:11:01.480 --> 00:11:02.240
a print book.
176
00:11:02.080 --> 00:11:04.500
Girl and I have to tell you that when I
177
00:11:04.539 --> 00:11:08.759
read your books and I'm a big mystery reader I
178
00:11:08.799 --> 00:11:11.840
love especially canine mysteries mysteries that have to do with
179
00:11:11.879 --> 00:11:15.169
dogs and when I'm I feel kind of akin to
180
00:11:15.190 --> 00:11:18.370
a strong female protagonist, which is with Maddie. And I
181
00:11:18.450 --> 00:11:22.269
love that she is with Cole and the way they've developed.
182
00:11:22.379 --> 00:11:25.240
But yes, the books read, I read them very fast
183
00:11:25.379 --> 00:11:28.259
because they're hard to put down, Margaret. I'm going to,
184
00:11:28.320 --> 00:11:30.519
I'm going to, my husband may have issue with it
185
00:11:30.539 --> 00:11:32.120
when I'm reading and I go, no, no, no, wait.
186
00:11:32.139 --> 00:11:33.259
I'll feed the dogs in a minute.
187
00:11:33.799 --> 00:11:36.200
For the listeners out there who may be new.
188
00:11:36.039 --> 00:11:39.200
To the show and not familiar with the Tidmouth Creek
189
00:11:39.220 --> 00:11:42.649
Canine Mysteries, can you just give like a brief overview
190
00:11:42.950 --> 00:11:44.070
of what they're about?
191
00:11:44.649 --> 00:11:45.049
Yes.
192
00:11:45.809 --> 00:11:50.110
Each mystery, and I purposely set out to do this
193
00:11:50.470 --> 00:11:54.629
in the very beginning of the series, each mystery highlights
194
00:11:54.740 --> 00:12:00.909
some type of social or criminal injustice and crime. Well,
195
00:12:00.970 --> 00:12:06.509
or social injustices that lead to criminal behavior. And often
196
00:12:06.730 --> 00:12:11.700
criminal acts against animals, although no dog is killed in
197
00:12:11.759 --> 00:12:16.220
this series and won't ever be. But I try to
198
00:12:16.820 --> 00:12:21.570
work in topics that are important for people to read
199
00:12:21.629 --> 00:12:24.070
about and to learn more about.
200
00:12:24.789 --> 00:12:27.330
As well as the family story.
201
00:12:27.470 --> 00:12:31.509
So there's always that subplot running in the background of
202
00:12:31.600 --> 00:12:36.960
how Maddie and Cole balance their lives even before they marry.
203
00:12:37.240 --> 00:12:41.580
And then lately, in the last two episodes, how they
204
00:12:41.620 --> 00:12:46.440
balance their lives as a married couple and parents to
205
00:12:46.610 --> 00:12:48.120
Cole's two daughters.
206
00:12:48.750 --> 00:12:49.909
So there's that.
207
00:12:51.110 --> 00:12:54.549
Well, and as a side note, Maddie has a very
208
00:12:54.850 --> 00:13:00.389
complex and interesting background, as does Cole. She's just not
209
00:13:00.730 --> 00:13:03.889
a canine officer and he's just not a veterinarian in
210
00:13:03.929 --> 00:13:08.419
a small town. Their backgrounds are very complex and intricate
211
00:13:08.480 --> 00:13:10.620
to all of the storylines that you bring us.
212
00:13:10.679 --> 00:13:12.019
So I'm very.
213
00:13:12.779 --> 00:13:17.639
invested in them, not only as a couple, but their interests,
214
00:13:18.019 --> 00:13:19.480
you know, in their professions.
215
00:13:20.000 --> 00:13:23.379
And of course, I just love Robo. He's amazing.
216
00:13:23.879 --> 00:13:25.419
So let's take a quick break.
217
00:13:25.519 --> 00:13:29.220
And when we return, Margaret will tell us about her latest.
218
00:13:28.879 --> 00:13:32.259
Book release, Fighting Edge. We'll be back in just a moment.
219
00:13:32.769 --> 00:13:35.990

and love lives on in her books, which are about
226
00:13:56.639 --> 00:13:59.559
a lonely little rescue dog who spreads the message that
227
00:13:59.620 --> 00:14:01.919
it's not what you look like on the outside that matters.
228
00:14:02.279 --> 00:14:04.620
It's the love in your heart that counts. Her books

243
00:15:10.889 --> 00:15:13.860
Welcome back everyone to the Doggie Diva Show. We are
244
00:15:13.940 --> 00:15:18.320
here with award-winning author Margaret Mizushima and the 11th book
245
00:15:18.419 --> 00:15:22.139
in the series, is Fighting Edge, and I found it
246
00:15:22.200 --> 00:15:27.750
to be an edge-of-your-seat, fast-paced read, which I thoroughly enjoyed,
247
00:15:27.769 --> 00:15:32.029
and I am sure the listeners will as well. So, Margaret,
248
00:15:32.289 --> 00:15:35.399
can you tell us a little bit about Fighting Edge
249
00:15:35.440 --> 00:15:36.700
and what we can expect?
250
00:15:37.320 --> 00:15:37.759
Yes.
251
00:15:38.500 --> 00:15:44.129
Fighting Edge has a rather complicated plot. And several threads
252
00:15:44.629 --> 00:15:51.179
run through the book that finally the investigative team of
253
00:15:51.299 --> 00:15:55.740
Timber Creek County figure out how those threads are all
254
00:15:55.799 --> 00:16:00.190
woven together. But it starts out with Maddie going to
255
00:16:00.250 --> 00:16:03.990
do just a routine welfare check. on a single mom
256
00:16:04.509 --> 00:16:07.629
who hasn't shown up at the daycare home with her
257
00:16:07.669 --> 00:16:12.350
daughter and isn't answering her cell phone. And so the
258
00:16:12.389 --> 00:16:16.009
daycare mom calls in a request for them to check
259
00:16:16.110 --> 00:16:21.990
on her. And Maddie finds a murdered young mother with
260
00:16:22.009 --> 00:16:26.350
a hysterical toddler in the crib in her bedroom.
261
00:16:27.009 --> 00:16:29.009
That's the first crime that happens.
262
00:16:29.350 --> 00:16:34.419
And then Maddie does a traffic stop after they have
263
00:16:34.519 --> 00:16:38.419
processed that scene. She does a traffic stop the very
264
00:16:38.539 --> 00:16:47.029
same day. and discovers narcotics trafficking in that vehicle after
265
00:16:47.090 --> 00:16:53.730
Robot sweeps the vehicle, as well as suspected human trafficking
266
00:16:54.049 --> 00:16:58.080
because there is a very frightened teenager involved. in the
267
00:16:58.120 --> 00:17:03.379
passenger seat. So things go from there. And then Cole
268
00:17:03.980 --> 00:17:10.150
actually observes suspicious activity at a dog kennel that he
269
00:17:10.410 --> 00:17:16.160
is doing work at. And so all of those seemingly
270
00:17:16.299 --> 00:17:20.400
different crimes end up being wrapped up in the same
271
00:17:20.460 --> 00:17:24.640
ball by the end of the book. And so that's
272
00:17:24.759 --> 00:17:28.720
kind of where that book goes. But in the background,
273
00:17:28.799 --> 00:17:33.160
we have Maddie and Cole and their home life as
274
00:17:33.400 --> 00:17:38.480
Maddie continues to become a part of Cole's family and
275
00:17:38.519 --> 00:17:41.180
a stepmother to the two children.
276
00:17:41.740 --> 00:17:44.180
So all of that is the book.
277
00:17:44.799 --> 00:17:48.549
And I always have to have subplots where Cole does something,
278
00:17:48.690 --> 00:17:52.869
Robo does something, Maddie does something, and the detective does something.
279
00:17:53.009 --> 00:17:57.039
So this book has quite a few crimes to investigate.
280
00:17:57.390 --> 00:17:59.980
You know, and then they all come together. The ending
281
00:18:00.019 --> 00:18:01.220
was phenomenal.
282
00:18:01.799 --> 00:18:04.779
Oh, great. I loved it. I loved it.
283
00:18:04.799 --> 00:18:07.359
And each one of your endings is all, you tie
284
00:18:07.420 --> 00:18:11.210
things up beautifully in And they're all different. I mean,
285
00:18:11.230 --> 00:18:13.789
this is my 11th book and each one is different,
286
00:18:13.849 --> 00:18:16.789
but it's fast paced and it makes you think and
287
00:18:16.829 --> 00:18:22.849
you also enlighten people because I find that you expertly
288
00:18:23.069 --> 00:18:29.480
weave like socially relevant, timely topics into your storylines.
289
00:18:29.960 --> 00:18:33.000
And I have to ask you that with.
290
00:18:32.900 --> 00:18:36.339
Robo, your research and everything that you do, how do
291
00:18:36.359 --> 00:18:42.069
you I mean, you actually bring the reader, myself, into
292
00:18:42.089 --> 00:18:47.809
the midst of what's going on and the canine police procedures.
293
00:18:48.230 --> 00:18:49.670
What is that process like?
294
00:18:49.750 --> 00:18:53.319
Because you literally, I'm not just reading about it, I
295
00:18:53.430 --> 00:18:55.319
actually feel like I'm a part of it.
296
00:18:55.380 --> 00:18:56.279
How does that happen?
297
00:18:56.960 --> 00:19:02.339
Well, this book was actually inspired years ago when I
298
00:19:02.359 --> 00:19:05.960
listened to an FBI agent who was on a human
299
00:19:06.019 --> 00:19:11.099
trafficking task force talk at one of my writing meetings,
300
00:19:11.289 --> 00:19:18.039
and I was fascinated with not just the sex trafficking
301
00:19:18.079 --> 00:19:21.400
that's going on in the country, but also the labor trafficking.
302
00:19:21.460 --> 00:19:25.880
And so it was inspired years ago, but there were
303
00:19:25.940 --> 00:19:28.920
so many of my friends writing on this topic that
304
00:19:28.980 --> 00:19:34.049
I decided to hold off. And then I met a
305
00:19:34.630 --> 00:19:39.289
retired FBI agent here where I'm living now, and she
306
00:19:39.329 --> 00:19:44.660
and I talked about a specific case that really inspired
307
00:19:44.720 --> 00:19:47.400
me to take this topic on finally.
308
00:19:47.420 --> 00:19:41.829
As far as Robo and I'm so fortunate to have Robo.
309
00:19:55.299 --> 00:19:59.279
Canine handler consultants who are willing to read my books
310
00:19:59.500 --> 00:20:06.470
before they go to print. And I also attend any
311
00:20:06.529 --> 00:20:11.789
kind of workshop done by a canine handler. And I
312
00:20:11.849 --> 00:20:19.029
have shadowed handlers, done ride-alongs, just been involved so much
313
00:20:19.190 --> 00:20:25.089
with observing training that it feels like in the past
314
00:20:25.089 --> 00:20:29.930
15 years, that has kind of been my entire educational
315
00:20:30.039 --> 00:20:36.599
focus is how do police canine officers work and how
316
00:20:36.640 --> 00:20:38.059
do they train their dogs?
317
00:20:38.240 --> 00:20:39.839
And so thank you for that.
318
00:20:40.519 --> 00:20:43.839
I try really hard to keep it real and to
319
00:20:44.200 --> 00:20:48.859
make sure what I put on the page is accurate.
320
00:20:49.519 --> 00:20:52.920
And I'm very grateful to the beta readers who helped
321
00:20:52.940 --> 00:20:53.900
me do that.
322
00:20:54.660 --> 00:20:58.180
Well, I have to tell you, Margaret, the authenticity, it's amazing.
323
00:20:58.299 --> 00:21:01.779
And it truly draws the reader in so that you
324
00:21:01.819 --> 00:21:04.640
become like a part of the entire situation.
325
00:21:04.660 --> 00:21:07.700
And especially Maddie and Robo, there's that.
326
00:21:08.289 --> 00:21:09.910
It's like a magical chemistry.
327
00:21:09.990 --> 00:21:12.950
I can't even describe it that a partner would have
328
00:21:13.069 --> 00:21:16.849
with their canine partner. It's, it's, What you do is great,
329
00:21:16.930 --> 00:21:19.910
and it's fun to read, and it's also very enlightening.
330
00:21:20.390 --> 00:21:23.559
And on that note, can we look forward to a
331
00:21:23.970 --> 00:21:26.799
12th book in the Trimble Creek Canine Mystery Series?
332
00:21:27.599 --> 00:21:29.460
Oh, yes, we can. Yay!
333
00:21:29.500 --> 00:21:31.609
Can you tell us anything about it?
334
00:21:32.140 --> 00:21:38.660
It will be coming out fall. of 2027, and it's
335
00:21:38.759 --> 00:21:44.140
being written right now. And I'm probably about 5,000 words
336
00:21:44.220 --> 00:21:46.920
from the end of the book, so I feel a
337
00:21:47.009 --> 00:21:48.650
celebration coming on.
338
00:21:50.490 --> 00:21:53.609
It always gives me something to look forward to.
339
00:21:54.130 --> 00:21:58.619
Maybe it's because of my age, but I am focusing
340
00:21:58.720 --> 00:22:02.339
on this book with the vulnerabilities of the aging and
341
00:22:02.619 --> 00:22:05.829
some of the things that happen to old people.
342
00:22:05.849 --> 00:22:09.309
Again, timely encouragement in this day.
343
00:22:10.869 --> 00:22:14.269
And I am startled every time that I add a
344
00:22:14.329 --> 00:22:16.319
new character that's my age.
345
00:22:17.359 --> 00:22:21.339
It's like, oh boy. Yes, but it's very enlightening.
346
00:22:21.440 --> 00:22:26.519
And again, you do that expert weave and there's that authenticity.
347
00:22:26.640 --> 00:22:29.259
So I can't wait to read the next one.
348
00:22:29.279 --> 00:22:31.500
I mean, I blew through this one in two days.
349
00:22:31.599 --> 00:22:34.400
I can't wait to read the next one. Oh, I
350
00:22:34.599 --> 00:22:36.930
wish it only took two days to write it.
351
00:22:37.369 --> 00:22:37.640
I know.
352
00:22:37.700 --> 00:22:39.549
I'm so selfish about this.
353
00:22:39.609 --> 00:22:42.930
But Margaret, I just want to thank you again for
354
00:22:42.970 --> 00:22:46.950
being our guest and for sharing Fighting Edge, the latest
355
00:22:47.009 --> 00:22:51.440
release in your so popular Timber Creek Canine Mystery Series.
356
00:22:51.740 --> 00:22:53.759
And now where can the listeners go to learn more
357
00:22:53.779 --> 00:22:57.380
about you, learn more about Fighting Edge, and the Timber
358
00:22:57.420 --> 00:22:59.130
Creek Canine Mystery Series?
359
00:23:00.000 --> 00:23:03.980
I would love for listeners to find me at my website,
360
00:23:04.079 --> 00:23:19.109
which is margaretmizushima.com. M-A-R-G-A-R-E-T-M-I-Z-U-S-H-I-M-A dot com. And I'm also on Facebook, Instagram,
361
00:23:19.480 --> 00:23:24.440
Blue Sky, and Facebook. So if you're on any of
362
00:23:24.480 --> 00:23:28.940
those social media platforms, you can find me there. But
363
00:23:29.019 --> 00:23:32.150
I also have a newsletter that you can sign up
364
00:23:32.230 --> 00:23:35.390
for when you get to my website. And that newsletter
365
00:23:35.470 --> 00:23:40.190
comes out about once a month. It has book news. giveaways,
366
00:23:40.930 --> 00:23:42.839
and cute dog photos.
367
00:23:44.119 --> 00:23:45.900
Well, and I just want to tell you that we
368
00:23:45.940 --> 00:23:48.900
are very happy to be featuring Fighting Edge as one
369
00:23:48.920 --> 00:23:52.339
of Miss Olive's favorite things in the latest issue.
370
00:23:52.119 --> 00:23:53.599
Of Suncoast Pet Magazine.
371
00:23:53.819 --> 00:23:56.079
And you know, Miss Olive used to be with me
372
00:23:56.180 --> 00:23:59.440
on all the shows, and she is.
373
00:24:00.299 --> 00:24:02.309
And I would be curled up in our reading chair.
374
00:24:02.390 --> 00:24:04.309
I have a reading chair and I would be reading
375
00:24:04.349 --> 00:24:04.730
your books.
376
00:24:04.869 --> 00:24:07.549
And that would be my husband would take the other
377
00:24:07.589 --> 00:24:09.940
dog and go, all right, we'll leave you too. Bye.
378
00:24:09.980 --> 00:24:15.000
We'll leave you, Margaret. And I would read throughout the day.
379
00:24:15.039 --> 00:24:15.960
And it was so wonderful.
380
00:24:16.039 --> 00:24:17.029
I'd grab a cup of tea.
381
00:24:17.680 --> 00:24:20.109
And her and I just sit there and have such
382
00:24:20.130 --> 00:24:22.890
a wonderful time. And whenever I read your books, it
383
00:24:22.930 --> 00:24:26.410
brings back so special memories because, you know, sadly, we
384
00:24:26.450 --> 00:24:27.990
lost Olive a few years ago.
385
00:24:28.069 --> 00:24:31.390
But they bring back such great memories to me.
386
00:24:31.710 --> 00:24:34.349
And I want to say that in memory of Miss
387
00:24:34.470 --> 00:24:39.130
Olive and in honor of Miss Olive's legacy, we have
388
00:24:39.230 --> 00:24:42.230
an initiative called the Pot Forward Initiative.
389
00:24:42.250 --> 00:24:42.319
Yes.
390
00:24:42.730 --> 00:24:45.980
And we're really honored to be making a donation to
391
00:24:46.019 --> 00:24:49.299
the Humane Society of Jefferson County, Washington.
392
00:24:49.319 --> 00:24:51.710
In your name, I know it's very near and dear
393
00:24:51.750 --> 00:24:53.829
to your heart. Can you just tell us a little
394
00:24:53.849 --> 00:24:55.470
bit about this wonderful organization?
395
00:24:56.400 --> 00:25:01.750
Yes, this organization is in Port Townsend, Washington, which is
396
00:25:01.789 --> 00:25:06.369
a very small town. And they not only shelter homeless
397
00:25:06.430 --> 00:25:11.160
pets and have adoption programs, but they offer spay and
398
00:25:11.200 --> 00:25:16.140
neuter clinics, vaccination clinics. They have also purchased a surgical
399
00:25:16.299 --> 00:25:20.480
unit that's parked on site so that their part-time veterinarian
400
00:25:20.519 --> 00:25:24.640
can provide medical and surgical care for their pets that
401
00:25:24.809 --> 00:25:27.609
end up there. I feel like they do such great
402
00:25:27.789 --> 00:25:34.049
work on a small budget. So very grateful for the donation.
403
00:25:34.549 --> 00:25:39.349
And we miss Miss Olive. So we loved her. So
404
00:25:39.450 --> 00:25:40.430
thank you so much.
405
00:25:41.170 --> 00:25:43.609
Well, and where can the listeners go to learn more
406
00:25:43.690 --> 00:25:46.859
about the Humane Society of Jefferson County in case they'd
407
00:25:46.880 --> 00:25:48.980
like to help or they'd like to learn more about
408
00:25:49.000 --> 00:25:50.940
them or contribute in any way that they can?
409
00:25:51.599 --> 00:26:02.440
It is at hsjcwa.org. And that is Humane Society of
410
00:26:02.619 --> 00:26:05.049
Jefferson County, Washington.
411
00:26:05.740 --> 00:26:08.569
So hopefully you can find it there.
412
00:26:09.190 --> 00:26:09.720
Thank you.
413
00:26:09.960 --> 00:26:14.599
And we'll be making this donation in your name to them.
414
00:26:14.700 --> 00:26:16.609
And thank you for bringing them to our attention. They
415
00:26:16.630 --> 00:26:19.589
sound like an amazing organization. Margaret, I just want to
416
00:26:19.630 --> 00:26:22.380

So Margaret, thank you so very much.
425
00:26:53.680 --> 00:26:56.450
And I look forward to talking to you next year.
426
00:26:56.910 --> 00:26:59.869
Thank you so much. I will look forward to it too.
427
00:27:00.410 --> 00:27:00.769
All right.
428
00:27:00.890 --> 00:27:02.130
We'll be back in just a moment.
429
00:27:06.539 --> 00:27:07.420

wagging tongues and tails.

00:03:50.669 --> 00:03:53.150
And we're so delighted to be talking with you about
63
00:03:53.289 --> 00:03:57.990
Fighting Edge, the latest release in your amazing Timber Creek
64
00:03:58.030 --> 00:03:59.400
Canine Mysteries.
65
00:04:00.000 --> 00:04:01.340
Well, thank you.
66
00:04:01.800 --> 00:04:06.259
It is book 11 in the series. And so I've
67
00:04:06.280 --> 00:04:09.340
been hard at work for over 10 years getting these
68
00:04:09.400 --> 00:04:10.620
books out, one a year.
69
00:04:11.139 --> 00:04:13.219
Well, and it gives me something to look forward to.
70
00:04:13.240 --> 00:04:16.449
Yeah. And, you know, it's really been an honor because
71
00:04:16.829 --> 00:04:20.129
we have had you as our guest since the debut
72
00:04:20.149 --> 00:04:22.970
of the first book in the Timber Creek Canine Mystery Series,
73
00:04:23.269 --> 00:04:27.000
Killing Trail. For our first-time listeners, can you just share
74
00:04:27.040 --> 00:04:30.160
a bit about yourself because you have such a diverse
75
00:04:30.300 --> 00:04:31.639
and interesting background?
76
00:04:32.100 --> 00:04:32.579
Thank you.
77
00:04:32.740 --> 00:04:37.610
It is a little different for someone who writes police procedurals.
78
00:04:38.110 --> 00:04:42.069
I am a retired speech therapist, but I'm married to
79
00:04:42.149 --> 00:04:47.699
a retired veterinarian. And so after I retired, I decided
80
00:04:47.800 --> 00:04:52.060
I really wanted to write fiction. and ended up writing
81
00:04:52.100 --> 00:04:57.060
this mystery. You mentioned the title, Killing Trail. It uses
82
00:04:57.079 --> 00:05:00.420
a lot of the scenes and things that I have
83
00:05:00.519 --> 00:05:07.199
observed over 40 years with my veterinarian husband. And so
84
00:05:07.439 --> 00:05:10.560
it just made sense to me that Cole Walker would
85
00:05:10.620 --> 00:05:13.910
be a vet. And then I was trying to decide
86
00:05:14.149 --> 00:05:18.629
what to do with that because veterinarians aren't called to
87
00:05:19.129 --> 00:05:25.389
investigate murder mysteries very often, if ever. So I decided, well,
88
00:05:25.449 --> 00:05:30.040
it only makes sense to pair my protagonist that I
89
00:05:30.079 --> 00:05:33.720
really want to have with another protagonist who is a
90
00:05:33.759 --> 00:05:35.680
canine handler and would.
91
00:05:35.519 --> 00:05:37.980
Be a love interest for veterinarians.
92
00:05:38.160 --> 00:05:43.050
Cole. And that's when Maddie Walker was born. In the
93
00:05:43.089 --> 00:05:46.490
first book, she is named Maddie Cobb, and her dog
94
00:05:46.550 --> 00:05:52.810
is Robo. He is a large male German shepherd, and
95
00:05:53.220 --> 00:05:55.180
he doesn't just sit in the vehicle.
96
00:05:55.360 --> 00:05:56.079
He is an.
97
00:05:57.560 --> 00:06:02.819
Integral part of solving the case. And so these books
98
00:06:02.939 --> 00:06:07.649
have a lot of outdoor scenes as well as canine
99
00:06:07.709 --> 00:06:12.610
handling action. And the three of them just are busy
100
00:06:12.769 --> 00:06:15.670
finding clues to solve the mysteries.
101
00:06:15.389 --> 00:06:16.389
In all of the books.
102
00:06:16.649 --> 00:06:20.339
And over the series, the reader gets to follow the
103
00:06:20.379 --> 00:06:24.519
love story between Maddie and Cole because they meet for
104
00:06:24.560 --> 00:06:27.899
the first time in book one, and then they marry
105
00:06:28.139 --> 00:06:32.329
in book nine. So they've been married now for a
106
00:06:32.410 --> 00:06:37.350
couple of books, and they are merging their family, and
107
00:06:37.470 --> 00:06:39.439
there's a lot that goes into that, too.
108
00:06:40.000 --> 00:06:44.980
Now, Robo, is Robo based on a real dog?
109
00:06:45.000 --> 00:06:49.870
Because Robo, Maddie and Cole are amazing, but Robo, whoa.
110
00:06:50.610 --> 00:06:55.699
He is based on a real dog. He was inspired
111
00:06:55.879 --> 00:07:00.300
by a dog that one of my consultants that I
112
00:07:00.360 --> 00:07:05.329
had early on in the series handled in Bellingham, Washington.
113
00:07:05.829 --> 00:07:10.529
And that German Shepherd's name was Robo. And my consultant
114
00:07:10.649 --> 00:07:15.680
taught me so much about dogs. what it was like
115
00:07:15.899 --> 00:07:19.879
being on a police force in an urban area. And
116
00:07:19.959 --> 00:07:24.620
she told me so many stories about Robo's skill set
117
00:07:25.240 --> 00:07:29.069
and all of the things he had done and how
118
00:07:29.129 --> 00:07:34.170
he saved her life many times. And yes, Robo was
119
00:07:34.230 --> 00:07:39.110
a real dog. He was deafened in an explosion in
120
00:07:39.170 --> 00:07:45.259
a warehouse. He was trained to detect narcotics and not explosives.
121
00:07:45.360 --> 00:07:48.680
And they were clearing a warehouse for narcotics when this
122
00:07:48.759 --> 00:07:53.459
bomb went off. And Robo was too close and he
123
00:07:53.639 --> 00:07:59.959
was deafened. And my consultant became ill from the chemical exposure.
124
00:07:59.980 --> 00:08:04.189
And they both retired and she got to take him
125
00:08:04.639 --> 00:08:07.769
as her pet. So he lived the rest of his
126
00:08:07.870 --> 00:08:13.139
life with her. It's astonishing what goes on with these
127
00:08:13.220 --> 00:08:16.759
dogs and how much they know and how much they
128
00:08:16.800 --> 00:08:18.379
can help a police force.
129
00:08:18.959 --> 00:08:22.879
And it's really nice knowing that this is actually based
130
00:08:22.959 --> 00:08:25.079
on a real dog who actually did this, a real
131
00:08:25.120 --> 00:08:29.540
police dog. And by being a character in your book,
132
00:08:30.319 --> 00:08:31.339
he'll live on forever.
133
00:08:31.420 --> 00:08:34.460
His legacy is forever. So thank you for doing that.
134
00:08:35.250 --> 00:08:37.049
Oh, I was so grateful.
135
00:08:37.250 --> 00:08:39.830
I asked her if I could use his name because
136
00:08:39.909 --> 00:08:42.090
I thought it was just the perfect name for a
137
00:08:42.600 --> 00:08:47.500
police dog. And she said, yes, that would be so
138
00:08:47.580 --> 00:08:51.419
wonderful for his name to live on as a big
139
00:08:51.460 --> 00:08:52.740
German shepherd.
140
00:08:52.379 --> 00:08:53.120
Who is crying.
141
00:08:53.139 --> 00:08:57.409
He is. Well, as many of my listeners know, and
142
00:08:58.710 --> 00:09:00.889
everyone listening today will know, that I have been a
143
00:09:00.929 --> 00:09:04.080
big fan of your books since I read Killing Trail,
144
00:09:04.129 --> 00:09:07.740
the first book in the series. And I always find
145
00:09:07.779 --> 00:09:10.039
myself totally invested, like, in the growth of.
146
00:09:10.039 --> 00:09:14.549
Maddie, Robo, Cole... And though.
147
00:09:14.399 --> 00:09:17.090
Each of the books that you write can be read
148
00:09:17.149 --> 00:09:21.549
as a standalone, do you agree with me that it's
149
00:09:21.629 --> 00:09:25.490
so worthwhile to read all of the books, 11 to date,
150
00:09:25.549 --> 00:09:30.409
including the new Fighting Edge, just to know the background?
151
00:09:30.529 --> 00:09:32.509
And even though they all stand alone and all of
152
00:09:32.549 --> 00:09:35.759
their situations stand alone, just I've become a part of it.
153
00:09:35.789 --> 00:09:39.090
I feel like I'm part of their family. But can
154
00:09:39.129 --> 00:09:40.600
you tell us, what do you think about that?
155
00:09:41.139 --> 00:09:46.580
You are part of our family. I agree to the.
156
00:09:46.259 --> 00:09:52.299
Extent that if you want the entire arc for these characters,
157
00:09:52.850 --> 00:09:55.169
you might want to read all of the books in
158
00:09:55.190 --> 00:09:55.870
the series.
159
00:09:56.409 --> 00:09:57.230
It's also, I.
160
00:09:57.730 --> 00:10:01.820
Think, a type of book that can be read quickly,
161
00:10:01.980 --> 00:10:06.360
so it kind of lends itself to binge reading if
162
00:10:06.460 --> 00:10:10.980
people like to do that during a vacation or over
163
00:10:11.019 --> 00:10:16.049
a long weekend. Each book does stand alone, and people
164
00:10:16.129 --> 00:10:20.549
can hop in Any time in the series, they could
165
00:10:20.629 --> 00:10:23.669
even hop in with Fighting Edge if they want to,
166
00:10:24.110 --> 00:10:28.509
and then go back and either listen to or read
167
00:10:29.009 --> 00:10:32.889
the rest of the series. The books are available in
168
00:10:32.990 --> 00:10:37.000
hardcover paperback. and audio versions.
169
00:10:37.559 --> 00:10:39.220
The hardcovers are no.
170
00:10:39.120 --> 00:10:43.210
Longer available for the early books, but they are always
171
00:10:43.230 --> 00:10:48.789
in ebook format and can be either found in libraries
172
00:10:49.389 --> 00:10:54.769
or purchased at your favorite ebook seller the later books
173
00:10:54.850 --> 00:10:58.409
I'd say the last five books are still available in
174
00:10:58.490 --> 00:11:01.429
print if you like to hold a print book I'm
175
00:11:01.480 --> 00:11:02.240
a print book.
176
00:11:02.080 --> 00:11:04.500
Girl and I have to tell you that when I
177
00:11:04.539 --> 00:11:08.759
read your books and I'm a big mystery reader I
178
00:11:08.799 --> 00:11:11.840
love especially canine mysteries mysteries that have to do with
179
00:11:11.879 --> 00:11:15.169
dogs and when I'm I feel kind of akin to
180
00:11:15.190 --> 00:11:18.370
a strong female protagonist, which is with Maddie. And I
181
00:11:18.450 --> 00:11:22.269
love that she is with Cole and the way they've developed.
182
00:11:22.379 --> 00:11:25.240
But yes, the books read, I read them very fast
183
00:11:25.379 --> 00:11:28.259
because they're hard to put down, Margaret. I'm going to,
184
00:11:28.320 --> 00:11:30.519
I'm going to, my husband may have issue with it
185
00:11:30.539 --> 00:11:32.120
when I'm reading and I go, no, no, no, wait.
186
00:11:32.139 --> 00:11:33.259
I'll feed the dogs in a minute.
187
00:11:33.799 --> 00:11:36.200
For the listeners out there who may be new.
188
00:11:36.039 --> 00:11:39.200
To the show and not familiar with the Tidmouth Creek
189
00:11:39.220 --> 00:11:42.649
Canine Mysteries, can you just give like a brief overview
190
00:11:42.950 --> 00:11:44.070
of what they're about?
191
00:11:44.649 --> 00:11:45.049
Yes.
192
00:11:45.809 --> 00:11:50.110
Each mystery, and I purposely set out to do this
193
00:11:50.470 --> 00:11:54.629
in the very beginning of the series, each mystery highlights
194
00:11:54.740 --> 00:12:00.909
some type of social or criminal injustice and crime. Well,
195
00:12:00.970 --> 00:12:06.509
or social injustices that lead to criminal behavior. And often
196
00:12:06.730 --> 00:12:11.700
criminal acts against animals, although no dog is killed in
197
00:12:11.759 --> 00:12:16.220
this series and won't ever be. But I try to
198
00:12:16.820 --> 00:12:21.570
work in topics that are important for people to read
199
00:12:21.629 --> 00:12:24.070
about and to learn more about.
200
00:12:24.789 --> 00:12:27.330
As well as the family story.
201
00:12:27.470 --> 00:12:31.509
So there's always that subplot running in the background of
202
00:12:31.600 --> 00:12:36.960
how Maddie and Cole balance their lives even before they marry.
203
00:12:37.240 --> 00:12:41.580
And then lately, in the last two episodes, how they
204
00:12:41.620 --> 00:12:46.440
balance their lives as a married couple and parents to
205
00:12:46.610 --> 00:12:48.120
Cole's two daughters.
206
00:12:48.750 --> 00:12:49.909
So there's that.
207
00:12:51.110 --> 00:12:54.549
Well, and as a side note, Maddie has a very
208
00:12:54.850 --> 00:13:00.389
complex and interesting background, as does Cole. She's just not
209
00:13:00.730 --> 00:13:03.889
a canine officer and he's just not a veterinarian in
210
00:13:03.929 --> 00:13:08.419
a small town. Their backgrounds are very complex and intricate
211
00:13:08.480 --> 00:13:10.620
to all of the storylines that you bring us.
212
00:13:10.679 --> 00:13:12.019
So I'm very.
213
00:13:12.779 --> 00:13:17.639
invested in them, not only as a couple, but their interests,
214
00:13:18.019 --> 00:13:19.480
you know, in their professions.
215
00:13:20.000 --> 00:13:23.379
And of course, I just love Robo. He's amazing.
216
00:13:23.879 --> 00:13:25.419
So let's take a quick break.
217
00:13:25.519 --> 00:13:29.220
And when we return, Margaret will tell us about her latest.
218
00:13:28.879 --> 00:13:32.259
Book release, Fighting Edge. We'll be back in just a moment.
219
00:13:32.769 --> 00:13:35.990
The Doggie Diva Diaries is proud to announce the Paw
220
00:13:36.049 --> 00:13:39.789

00:13:42.710 --> 00:13:47.149
award-winning books will be donated to a selected animal welfare organization.
223
00:13:47.429 --> 00:13:50.059
The designated charity will be revealed at the end of
224
00:13:50.200 --> 00:13:53.960
each Doggie Diva Show episode. Miss Olive's legacy of kindness
225
00:13:54.019 --> 00:13:56.460
and love lives on in her books, which are about
226
00:13:56.639 --> 00:13:59.559
a lonely little rescue dog who spreads the message that
227
00:13:59.620 --> 00:14:01.919
it's not what you look like on the outside that matters.
228
00:14:02.279 --> 00:14:04.620
It's the love in your heart that counts. Her books
229
00:14:04.679 --> 00:14:08.639
are available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other online booksellers.

243
00:15:10.889 --> 00:15:13.860
Welcome back everyone to the Doggie Diva Show. We are
244
00:15:13.940 --> 00:15:18.320
here with award-winning author Margaret Mizushima and the 11th book
245
00:15:18.419 --> 00:15:22.139
in the series, is Fighting Edge, and I found it
246
00:15:22.200 --> 00:15:27.750
to be an edge-of-your-seat, fast-paced read, which I thoroughly enjoyed,
247
00:15:27.769 --> 00:15:32.029
and I am sure the listeners will as well. So, Margaret,
248
00:15:32.289 --> 00:15:35.399
can you tell us a little bit about Fighting Edge
249
00:15:35.440 --> 00:15:36.700
and what we can expect?
250
00:15:37.320 --> 00:15:37.759
Yes.
251
00:15:38.500 --> 00:15:44.129
Fighting Edge has a rather complicated plot. And several threads
252
00:15:44.629 --> 00:15:51.179
run through the book that finally the investigative team of
253
00:15:51.299 --> 00:15:55.740
Timber Creek County figure out how those threads are all
254
00:15:55.799 --> 00:16:00.190
woven together. But it starts out with Maddie going to
255
00:16:00.250 --> 00:16:03.990
do just a routine welfare check. on a single mom
256
00:16:04.509 --> 00:16:07.629
who hasn't shown up at the daycare home with her
257
00:16:07.669 --> 00:16:12.350
daughter and isn't answering her cell phone. And so the
258
00:16:12.389 --> 00:16:16.009
daycare mom calls in a request for them to check
259
00:16:16.110 --> 00:16:21.990
on her. And Maddie finds a murdered young mother with
260
00:16:22.009 --> 00:16:26.350
a hysterical toddler in the crib in her bedroom.
261
00:16:27.009 --> 00:16:29.009
That's the first crime that happens.
262
00:16:29.350 --> 00:16:34.419
And then Maddie does a traffic stop after they have
263
00:16:34.519 --> 00:16:38.419
processed that scene. She does a traffic stop the very
264
00:16:38.539 --> 00:16:47.029
same day. and discovers narcotics trafficking in that vehicle after
265
00:16:47.090 --> 00:16:53.730
Robot sweeps the vehicle, as well as suspected human trafficking
266
00:16:54.049 --> 00:16:58.080
because there is a very frightened teenager involved. in the
267
00:16:58.120 --> 00:17:03.379
passenger seat. So things go from there. And then Cole
268
00:17:03.980 --> 00:17:10.150
actually observes suspicious activity at a dog kennel that he
269
00:17:10.410 --> 00:17:16.160
is doing work at. And so all of those seemingly
270
00:17:16.299 --> 00:17:20.400
different crimes end up being wrapped up in the same
271
00:17:20.460 --> 00:17:24.640
ball by the end of the book. And so that's
272
00:17:24.759 --> 00:17:28.720
kind of where that book goes. But in the background,
273
00:17:28.799 --> 00:17:33.160
we have Maddie and Cole and their home life as
274
00:17:33.400 --> 00:17:38.480
Maddie continues to become a part of Cole's family and
275
00:17:38.519 --> 00:17:41.180
a stepmother to the two children.
276
00:17:41.740 --> 00:17:44.180
So all of that is the book.
277
00:17:44.799 --> 00:17:48.549
And I always have to have subplots where Cole does something,
278
00:17:48.690 --> 00:17:52.869
Robo does something, Maddie does something, and the detective does something.
279
00:17:53.009 --> 00:17:57.039
So this book has quite a few crimes to investigate.
280
00:17:57.390 --> 00:17:59.980
You know, and then they all come together. The ending
281
00:18:00.019 --> 00:18:01.220
was phenomenal.
282
00:18:01.799 --> 00:18:04.779
Oh, great. I loved it. I loved it.
283
00:18:04.799 --> 00:18:07.359
And each one of your endings is all, you tie
284
00:18:07.420 --> 00:18:11.210
things up beautifully in And they're all different. I mean,
285
00:18:11.230 --> 00:18:13.789
this is my 11th book and each one is different,
286
00:18:13.849 --> 00:18:16.789
but it's fast paced and it makes you think and
287
00:18:16.829 --> 00:18:22.849
you also enlighten people because I find that you expertly
288
00:18:23.069 --> 00:18:29.480
weave like socially relevant, timely topics into your storylines.
289
00:18:29.960 --> 00:18:33.000
And I have to ask you that with.
290
00:18:32.900 --> 00:18:36.339
Robo, your research and everything that you do, how do
291
00:18:36.359 --> 00:18:42.069
you I mean, you actually bring the reader, myself, into
292
00:18:42.089 --> 00:18:47.809
the midst of what's going on and the canine police procedures.
293
00:18:48.230 --> 00:18:49.670
What is that process like?
294
00:18:49.750 --> 00:18:53.319
Because you literally, I'm not just reading about it, I
295
00:18:53.430 --> 00:18:55.319
actually feel like I'm a part of it.
296
00:18:55.380 --> 00:18:56.279
How does that happen?
297
00:18:56.960 --> 00:19:02.339
Well, this book was actually inspired years ago when I
298
00:19:02.359 --> 00:19:05.960
listened to an FBI agent who was on a human
299
00:19:06.019 --> 00:19:11.099
trafficking task force talk at one of my writing meetings,
300
00:19:11.289 --> 00:19:18.039
and I was fascinated with not just the sex trafficking
301
00:19:18.079 --> 00:19:21.400
that's going on in the country, but also the labor trafficking.
302
00:19:21.460 --> 00:19:25.880
And so it was inspired years ago, but there were
303
00:19:25.940 --> 00:19:28.920
so many of my friends writing on this topic that
304
00:19:28.980 --> 00:19:34.049
I decided to hold off. And then I met a
305
00:19:34.630 --> 00:19:39.289
retired FBI agent here where I'm living now, and she
306
00:19:39.329 --> 00:19:44.660
and I talked about a specific case that really inspired
307
00:19:44.720 --> 00:19:47.400
me to take this topic on finally.
308
00:19:47.420 --> 00:19:41.829
As far as Robo and I'm so fortunate to have Robo.
309
00:19:55.299 --> 00:19:59.279
Canine handler consultants who are willing to read my books
310
00:19:59.500 --> 00:20:06.470
before they go to print. And I also attend any
311
00:20:06.529 --> 00:20:11.789
kind of workshop done by a canine handler. And I
312
00:20:11.849 --> 00:20:19.029
have shadowed handlers, done ride-alongs, just been involved so much
313
00:20:19.190 --> 00:20:25.089
with observing training that it feels like in the past
314
00:20:25.089 --> 00:20:29.930
15 years, that has kind of been my entire educational
315
00:20:30.039 --> 00:20:36.599
focus is how do police canine officers work and how
316
00:20:36.640 --> 00:20:38.059
do they train their dogs?
317
00:20:38.240 --> 00:20:39.839
And so thank you for that.
318
00:20:40.519 --> 00:20:43.839
I try really hard to keep it real and to
319
00:20:44.200 --> 00:20:48.859
make sure what I put on the page is accurate.
320
00:20:49.519 --> 00:20:52.920
And I'm very grateful to the beta readers who helped
321
00:20:52.940 --> 00:20:53.900
me do that.
322
00:20:54.660 --> 00:20:58.180
Well, I have to tell you, Margaret, the authenticity, it's amazing.
323
00:20:58.299 --> 00:21:01.779
And it truly draws the reader in so that you
324
00:21:01.819 --> 00:21:04.640
become like a part of the entire situation.
325
00:21:04.660 --> 00:21:07.700
And especially Maddie and Robo, there's that.
326
00:21:08.289 --> 00:21:09.910
It's like a magical chemistry.
327
00:21:09.990 --> 00:21:12.950
I can't even describe it that a partner would have
328
00:21:13.069 --> 00:21:16.849
with their canine partner. It's, it's, What you do is great,
329
00:21:16.930 --> 00:21:19.910
and it's fun to read, and it's also very enlightening.
330
00:21:20.390 --> 00:21:23.559
And on that note, can we look forward to a
331
00:21:23.970 --> 00:21:26.799
12th book in the Trimble Creek Canine Mystery Series?
332
00:21:27.599 --> 00:21:29.460
Oh, yes, we can. Yay!
333
00:21:29.500 --> 00:21:31.609
Can you tell us anything about it?
334
00:21:32.140 --> 00:21:38.660
It will be coming out fall. of 2027, and it's
335
00:21:38.759 --> 00:21:44.140
being written right now. And I'm probably about 5,000 words
336
00:21:44.220 --> 00:21:46.920
from the end of the book, so I feel a
337
00:21:47.009 --> 00:21:48.650
celebration coming on.
338
00:21:50.490 --> 00:21:53.609
It always gives me something to look forward to.
339
00:21:54.130 --> 00:21:58.619
Maybe it's because of my age, but I am focusing
340
00:21:58.720 --> 00:22:02.339
on this book with the vulnerabilities of the aging and
341
00:22:02.619 --> 00:22:05.829
some of the things that happen to old people.
342
00:22:05.849 --> 00:22:09.309
Again, timely encouragement in this day.
343
00:22:10.869 --> 00:22:14.269
And I am startled every time that I add a
344
00:22:14.329 --> 00:22:16.319
new character that's my age.
345
00:22:17.359 --> 00:22:21.339
It's like, oh boy. Yes, but it's very enlightening.
346
00:22:21.440 --> 00:22:26.519
And again, you do that expert weave and there's that authenticity.
347
00:22:26.640 --> 00:22:29.259
So I can't wait to read the next one.
348
00:22:29.279 --> 00:22:31.500
I mean, I blew through this one in two days.
349
00:22:31.599 --> 00:22:34.400
I can't wait to read the next one. Oh, I
350
00:22:34.599 --> 00:22:36.930
wish it only took two days to write it.
351
00:22:37.369 --> 00:22:37.640
I know.
352
00:22:37.700 --> 00:22:39.549
I'm so selfish about this.
353
00:22:39.609 --> 00:22:42.930
But Margaret, I just want to thank you again for
354
00:22:42.970 --> 00:22:46.950
being our guest and for sharing Fighting Edge, the latest
355
00:22:47.009 --> 00:22:51.440
release in your so popular Timber Creek Canine Mystery Series.
356
00:22:51.740 --> 00:22:53.759
And now where can the listeners go to learn more
357
00:22:53.779 --> 00:22:57.380
about you, learn more about Fighting Edge, and the Timber
358
00:22:57.420 --> 00:22:59.130
Creek Canine Mystery Series?
359
00:23:00.000 --> 00:23:03.980
I would love for listeners to find me at my website,
360
00:23:04.079 --> 00:23:19.109
which is margaretmizushima.com. M-A-R-G-A-R-E-T-M-I-Z-U-S-H-I-M-A dot com. And I'm also on Facebook, Instagram,
361
00:23:19.480 --> 00:23:24.440
Blue Sky, and Facebook. So if you're on any of
362
00:23:24.480 --> 00:23:28.940
those social media platforms, you can find me there. But
363
00:23:29.019 --> 00:23:32.150
I also have a newsletter that you can sign up
364
00:23:32.230 --> 00:23:35.390
for when you get to my website. And that newsletter
365
00:23:35.470 --> 00:23:40.190
comes out about once a month. It has book news. giveaways,
366
00:23:40.930 --> 00:23:42.839
and cute dog photos.
367
00:23:44.119 --> 00:23:45.900
Well, and I just want to tell you that we
368
00:23:45.940 --> 00:23:48.900
are very happy to be featuring Fighting Edge as one
369
00:23:48.920 --> 00:23:52.339
of Miss Olive's favorite things in the latest issue.
370
00:23:52.119 --> 00:23:53.599
Of Suncoast Pet Magazine.
371
00:23:53.819 --> 00:23:56.079
And you know, Miss Olive used to be with me
372
00:23:56.180 --> 00:23:59.440
on all the shows, and she is.
373
00:24:00.299 --> 00:24:02.309
And I would be curled up in our reading chair.
374
00:24:02.390 --> 00:24:04.309
I have a reading chair and I would be reading
375
00:24:04.349 --> 00:24:04.730
your books.
376
00:24:04.869 --> 00:24:07.549
And that would be my husband would take the other
377
00:24:07.589 --> 00:24:09.940
dog and go, all right, we'll leave you too. Bye.
378
00:24:09.980 --> 00:24:15.000
We'll leave you, Margaret. And I would read throughout the day.
379
00:24:15.039 --> 00:24:15.960
And it was so wonderful.
380
00:24:16.039 --> 00:24:17.029
I'd grab a cup of tea.
381
00:24:17.680 --> 00:24:20.109
And her and I just sit there and have such
382
00:24:20.130 --> 00:24:22.890
a wonderful time. And whenever I read your books, it
383
00:24:22.930 --> 00:24:26.410
brings back so special memories because, you know, sadly, we
384
00:24:26.450 --> 00:24:27.990
lost Olive a few years ago.
385
00:24:28.069 --> 00:24:31.390
But they bring back such great memories to me.
386
00:24:31.710 --> 00:24:34.349
And I want to say that in memory of Miss
387
00:24:34.470 --> 00:24:39.130
Olive and in honor of Miss Olive's legacy, we have
388
00:24:39.230 --> 00:24:42.230
an initiative called the Pot Forward Initiative.
389
00:24:42.250 --> 00:24:42.319
Yes.
390
00:24:42.730 --> 00:24:45.980
And we're really honored to be making a donation to
391
00:24:46.019 --> 00:24:49.299
the Humane Society of Jefferson County, Washington.
392
00:24:49.319 --> 00:24:51.710
In your name, I know it's very near and dear
393
00:24:51.750 --> 00:24:53.829
to your heart. Can you just tell us a little
394
00:24:53.849 --> 00:24:55.470
bit about this wonderful organization?
395
00:24:56.400 --> 00:25:01.750
Yes, this organization is in Port Townsend, Washington, which is
396
00:25:01.789 --> 00:25:06.369
a very small town. And they not only shelter homeless
397
00:25:06.430 --> 00:25:11.160
pets and have adoption programs, but they offer spay and
398
00:25:11.200 --> 00:25:16.140
neuter clinics, vaccination clinics. They have also purchased a surgical
399
00:25:16.299 --> 00:25:20.480
unit that's parked on site so that their part-time veterinarian
400
00:25:20.519 --> 00:25:24.640
can provide medical and surgical care for their pets that
401
00:25:24.809 --> 00:25:27.609
end up there. I feel like they do such great
402
00:25:27.789 --> 00:25:34.049
work on a small budget. So very grateful for the donation.
403
00:25:34.549 --> 00:25:39.349
And we miss Miss Olive. So we loved her. So
404
00:25:39.450 --> 00:25:40.430
thank you so much.
405
00:25:41.170 --> 00:25:43.609
Well, and where can the listeners go to learn more
406
00:25:43.690 --> 00:25:46.859
about the Humane Society of Jefferson County in case they'd
407
00:25:46.880 --> 00:25:48.980
like to help or they'd like to learn more about
408
00:25:49.000 --> 00:25:50.940
them or contribute in any way that they can?
409
00:25:51.599 --> 00:26:02.440
It is at hsjcwa.org. And that is Humane Society of
410
00:26:02.619 --> 00:26:05.049
Jefferson County, Washington.
411
00:26:05.740 --> 00:26:08.569
So hopefully you can find it there.
412
00:26:09.190 --> 00:26:09.720
Thank you.
413
00:26:09.960 --> 00:26:14.599
And we'll be making this donation in your name to them.
414
00:26:14.700 --> 00:26:16.609
And thank you for bringing them to our attention. They
415
00:26:16.630 --> 00:26:19.589
sound like an amazing organization. Margaret, I just want to
416
00:26:19.630 --> 00:26:22.380

00:26:34.269 --> 00:26:41.869

422
00:26:46.710 --> 00:26:50.799
Mystery Series, and of course, the most recent, Fighting Edge.
423
00:26:51.119 --> 00:26:51.720
It's amazing.
424
00:26:51.859 --> 00:26:53.640
So Margaret, thank you so very much.

This is Catherine Tygo.

436
00:27:16.240 --> 00:27:17.779
