In this episode, I’m sharing some of the phrases I use with my teenagers when conversations start to feel disrespectful, repetitive, or completely exhausting.
I talk about the power of not engaging in every argument, walking away, and giving everyone time to cool down. Sometimes saying, “I’m going to pretend you didn’t say that,” or “This conversation is over,” works much better than getting pulled into a power struggle. I also share how I’m learning to stay firm when my kids keep pestering me after I’ve already said no—and why changing my decision just teaches them that pestering works.
But honestly, this episode is just as much about me as it is about them. I talk about reminding myself, “I’m the grown-up here,” recognizing when I’m already too worked up to be effective, and accepting that my kids are allowed to be upset with my decisions. I also get real about how much I tend to people-please my kids because saying yes is often easier in the moment—even when I know I’ll regret it later.
With four kids, growing desires, competing demands, and teenagers who sometimes seem completely unimpressed by everything, I’m learning that setting boundaries is a skill. It takes practice to say no, protect my energy, and let my kids have their feelings without immediately trying to fix them.
