00:00:07.200 --> 00:00:10.480
Welcome to Stance for Health Podcast with Dr.
00:00:10.480 --> 00:00:12.560
Rodney and Karen Wirth.
00:00:12.560 --> 00:00:15.759
Where becoming healthy is not complicated.
00:00:15.759 --> 00:00:27.519
Control your health by focusing on six areas of life that we teach you so you finally have the energy you want and have to do what you want instead of being a victim of your age.
00:00:27.519 --> 00:00:34.560
I have over 20 years' experience working as a chiropractor, and Karen is an author, speaker, and longevity coach.
00:00:34.560 --> 00:00:44.079
We've seen how a tiny change in your habits today can open up your life to a powerful future.
00:00:44.079 --> 00:00:48.399
Start today and take your stance for health.
00:00:49.759 --> 00:00:50.560
Hi there.
00:00:50.560 --> 00:00:56.000
This is Karen with Stance Chiropractiac doing a solo podcast.
00:00:56.000 --> 00:01:04.560
Doc is really busy with a lot of different things, and so I wanted to come out here and talk about my own experience anyway.
00:01:04.560 --> 00:01:07.840
So that's why I'm doing it solo, but I do miss him.
00:01:07.840 --> 00:01:10.480
We do have fun doing these podcasts.
00:01:10.719 --> 00:01:15.120
What I want to talk to you about today is how to stay motivated to exercise.
00:01:15.120 --> 00:01:20.959
And the reason I'm doing this is I'm the one that needs motivation to exercise.
00:01:20.959 --> 00:01:23.359
And when I met Dr.
00:01:23.359 --> 00:01:31.280
Rodney a little over 10 years ago, he was already exercising like a champ.
00:01:31.280 --> 00:01:33.599
In fact, he was over-exercising.
00:01:33.599 --> 00:01:35.920
We've talked about that a little bit before.
00:01:35.920 --> 00:01:44.799
And that he was doing long distance rides and riding 100 miles in 100-degree weather, and did that four years in a row.
00:01:44.799 --> 00:01:47.519
In case you don't know, we're both widowed.
00:01:47.519 --> 00:01:53.680
We met almost 10 years ago or so.
00:01:53.680 --> 00:02:05.280
And one of the first things he asked me to do was if I wanted to come exercise with him and do PACE workout, it's a high-intensity interval training before he would go to work.
00:02:05.280 --> 00:02:06.719
And I said, sure.
00:02:06.719 --> 00:02:09.840
So I showed up and we did that.
00:02:09.840 --> 00:02:14.879
And I just want to talk to you about the motivation to continue to do that.
00:02:14.879 --> 00:02:24.719
Because I know if you're like me, you start in January and by February, sometimes March, you're doing great if you make it to April.
00:02:24.719 --> 00:02:26.879
But most of us by that time, we stop.
00:02:26.879 --> 00:02:30.800
And I just want to let you know that this isn't about willpower.
00:02:30.800 --> 00:02:36.240
And if everybody showed up that has signed up at gyms, you would not be able to get in.
00:02:36.240 --> 00:02:40.080
And that's kind of the way it is in January, but then it wanes away.
00:02:40.080 --> 00:02:45.360
So, first of all, you need to feel like your workout is worth it.
00:02:45.360 --> 00:02:49.840
And that's probably one of the things that I found right away.
00:02:49.840 --> 00:02:56.240
And by the way, I have done the lowest level for all this time and I began to see a difference.
00:02:56.240 --> 00:02:59.919
So, what is our motivation to exercise?
00:02:59.919 --> 00:03:09.680
Well, for me, it was enjoyable, and I was connecting and getting to know the man who would become my husband.
00:03:09.680 --> 00:03:15.759
And so it wasn't out of guilt or fear or even that I wanted to change something about myself.
00:03:15.759 --> 00:03:22.240
It was more about a personal value that made me feel like I like this guy.
00:03:22.240 --> 00:03:25.120
My experiences were so positive during this.
00:03:25.120 --> 00:03:27.840
I wasn't getting incredibly sore.
00:03:27.840 --> 00:03:35.039
A lot of time people go into exercise and they work out so hard and then they're hurting, and so then they stop.
00:03:35.039 --> 00:03:38.159
But I began to get more and more confidence.
00:03:38.159 --> 00:03:42.479
My balance got better, my back felt better.
00:03:42.479 --> 00:03:47.360
And basically, it wasn't that intense.
00:03:47.360 --> 00:03:55.039
I think some of one of the mistakes that we can make with exercise is that we think that more is better.
00:03:55.039 --> 00:04:02.879
In other words, I didn't work out all week, so this weekend, I'm gonna be that weekend warrior.
00:04:02.879 --> 00:04:06.080
I didn't walk any day this week.
00:04:06.080 --> 00:04:09.840
So now I'm going to walk five miles all at once.
00:04:09.840 --> 00:04:11.199
It doesn't matter if it's hot.
00:04:11.199 --> 00:04:12.719
I am going to push myself.
00:04:12.719 --> 00:04:17.360
Instead, it's giving your body what it needs.
00:04:17.360 --> 00:04:18.800
And I love that.
00:04:18.800 --> 00:04:27.439
One of the things that I like so much about the way that we have exercised, having someone to do it with is really important.
00:04:27.439 --> 00:04:28.480
And we rotate it.
00:04:28.480 --> 00:04:34.639
And that's something we're going to talk about when you develop your own exercise plan, because I think that's important to have a plan.
00:04:34.639 --> 00:04:42.240
The thing about exercise or any health discipline is not to beat yourself up when you stop.
00:04:42.240 --> 00:04:52.639
Because the research on motivation and how to form habits show that harsh self-judgment gets you stuck in that negative response.
00:04:52.959 --> 00:04:57.920
If you're listening to this podcast and you're saying, Oh, I so admire what you and Dr.
00:04:57.920 --> 00:05:01.120
Rodney have done, I want you to have some self-compassion.
00:05:01.120 --> 00:05:06.399
I want you to talk to yourself the same way you would talk to your best friend.
00:05:06.399 --> 00:05:10.399
So would you be telling your best friend, oh, you're terrible.
00:05:10.399 --> 00:05:12.240
I can't believe you stopped.
00:05:12.240 --> 00:05:13.920
Why did you ruin this?
00:05:13.920 --> 00:05:19.680
Instead, what is one realistic thing you would offer to a friend as encouragement?
00:05:19.680 --> 00:05:26.800
Setbacks and things that we go back to old patterns need to be reframed.
00:05:26.800 --> 00:05:32.800
Because when we reframe it, we say, oh, I stopped exercising.
00:05:32.800 --> 00:05:36.959
Instead of that saying, I took a small break, I'm starting again today.
00:05:36.959 --> 00:05:44.319
Now, the other thing about it is that we've heard that it takes 21 days to create a habit.
00:05:44.319 --> 00:05:48.879
How about 59 to 66 days?
00:05:48.879 --> 00:05:51.199
So that's what I want you to think.
00:05:51.199 --> 00:06:00.079
You built that 21-day habit, but it has to be repeated several months, not just once.
00:06:00.079 --> 00:06:03.120
Here's what I want you to focus in on.
00:06:03.120 --> 00:06:07.600
You need to create positive patterns for your brain.
00:06:07.600 --> 00:06:16.720
Physical activity maintenance model shows that prior exercise frequency is often the strongest predictor of what you're going to do in the future.
00:06:16.720 --> 00:06:24.800
And that's where doing a little bit every day is better than not doing anything all week and then just doing the weekend.
00:06:24.800 --> 00:06:26.399
What are you interested in?
00:06:26.399 --> 00:06:28.639
What is safe for you to do?
00:06:28.639 --> 00:06:29.759
Is it fun?
00:06:29.759 --> 00:06:32.480
Would you love doing that three to four times a week?
00:06:32.480 --> 00:06:41.920
And that's what I want you to look at because we want to be able to develop our own exercise methodology, not just what other people are doing.
00:06:41.920 --> 00:06:44.959
It's not a competition here, it's your body.
00:06:44.959 --> 00:06:52.000
And that is what you want to do is that your motivation comes from inside.
00:06:52.000 --> 00:06:57.199
So let's look at what's going to be an exercise routine for you.
00:06:57.199 --> 00:06:58.879
What do you like to do?
00:06:58.879 --> 00:07:03.600
For me, part of what I do for exercise is go to the garden every evening.
00:07:03.600 --> 00:07:09.600
That is not that strenuous of exercise, although in this Texas heat this summer.
00:07:09.600 --> 00:07:15.519
It has been a little bit much because even going at 8 or 8:30, it's still almost 100 degrees.
00:07:15.519 --> 00:07:20.240
But I figure, uh, if I haven't made it to the sun, I have a built-in one, right?
00:07:20.240 --> 00:07:25.839
Let's look at some ways to make your exercise routine easier to return to.
00:07:25.839 --> 00:07:27.839
What's going to help you to do that?
00:07:27.839 --> 00:07:30.560
I say, what do you like to do?
00:07:30.560 --> 00:07:32.079
Do you like to take a walk?
00:07:32.079 --> 00:07:33.680
Do you enjoy music?
00:07:33.680 --> 00:07:36.000
Do you like to dance?
00:07:36.000 --> 00:07:37.360
Do you like to swim?
00:07:37.360 --> 00:07:45.600
We have a one of our health partners that swims consistently, and her goal is to swim at least three times a week.
00:07:45.600 --> 00:07:54.000
And when she stops, I encourage her to go back at least once a week, then the following week do two, and the next one do three.
00:07:54.000 --> 00:07:59.120
And I think she's probably one of the best examples of learning to be nice to yourself.
00:07:59.120 --> 00:08:00.560
I want you to start out with that.
00:08:00.560 --> 00:08:02.800
I'm going to be nice too and fill in your name.
00:08:02.800 --> 00:08:04.560
I'm going to be nice to Karen here.
00:08:04.800 --> 00:08:14.319
The other thing that you want to do is you want to make your exercise session or your workout small enough that you're not overwhelmed.
00:08:14.319 --> 00:08:22.720
Something that we've started recently because we were getting the heart rate up with the high intensity interval training.
00:08:22.720 --> 00:08:29.120
But while we have been doing kettlebell, and that has been actually very fun.
00:08:29.120 --> 00:08:30.800
It's 10 minutes.
00:08:30.800 --> 00:08:32.799
We have an upper body workout.
00:08:32.799 --> 00:08:40.399
We have one that's for the entire body, different personalities presenting the YouTubes that we do, and we alternate those.
00:08:40.399 --> 00:08:41.759
And so that helps.
00:08:41.759 --> 00:08:46.960
I have noticed a real difference in the strength of my legs, especially and in my hips.
00:08:46.960 --> 00:08:52.320
And another thing to do, don't make exercise so formal.
00:08:52.320 --> 00:08:53.919
Build it around your life.
00:08:53.919 --> 00:08:55.279
Go for a walk.
00:08:55.279 --> 00:08:58.399
Go do something that you love to do.
00:08:58.399 --> 00:08:59.919
Go play with your grandkid.
00:08:59.919 --> 00:09:01.200
Go to the garden.
00:09:01.200 --> 00:09:08.639
And set some goals for movement, especially right after you eat, because research is showing that that is really, really important.
00:09:08.639 --> 00:09:11.200
What happens when you miss?
00:09:11.200 --> 00:09:13.120
Treat it as information.
00:09:13.120 --> 00:09:20.960
If you're keeping an exercise journal, which I highly recommend, by the way, because you're going to be harder on yourself than you thought you are.
00:09:20.960 --> 00:09:38.799
If you'll go back and see the pattern, give one reason, not an excuse, but got to bed late, uh, did not sleep well, or we were traveling, or I was I was sore or had too much on my schedule.
00:09:38.799 --> 00:09:40.480
It doesn't matter.
00:09:40.480 --> 00:09:47.759
Just replace the beating yourself up to self-criticism with a restart.
00:09:47.759 --> 00:09:49.919
So this is what I'm gonna do to restart.
00:09:49.919 --> 00:09:51.440
I'm gonna ask you some questions.
00:09:51.440 --> 00:09:55.360
Why did you quit exercising the last time you were on a routine?
00:09:55.360 --> 00:09:59.759
And that's going to tell you a lot about what happened.
00:09:59.759 --> 00:10:07.120
I think if you analyze why you quit, you will be able to move forward a little bit better.
00:10:07.120 --> 00:10:08.320
Second question.
00:10:08.320 --> 00:10:14.399
So, first one is why did you quit exercising even when you knew it was good for you?
00:10:14.399 --> 00:10:18.399
I mean, no one has to convince you that it's good for you, but why did you stop?
00:10:18.399 --> 00:10:24.879
And most people, when I ask them this question, they give a lot of excuses.
00:10:24.879 --> 00:10:26.320
I'm too busy.
00:10:26.320 --> 00:10:31.840
We have another health partner that I asked as we're headed into the long weekend.
00:10:31.840 --> 00:10:33.919
You'll be listening to this at a different time.
00:10:33.919 --> 00:10:37.840
We had Labor Day coming up, and she was headed with her family to the lake.
00:10:37.840 --> 00:10:41.679
And I said, Are you going to do your exercises out there?
00:10:41.679 --> 00:10:44.320
And she said, Oh no, I'm going to be too busy.
00:10:44.320 --> 00:10:45.519
I can't do that.
00:10:45.519 --> 00:10:55.679
And there's she just started and I said, How about you choose one thing and you do the one thing when you first get up?
00:10:55.679 --> 00:10:59.200
And she looked at me like, you're right.
00:10:59.200 --> 00:11:07.360
And so I want to give you a plan for how you can do a reset of this.
00:11:07.360 --> 00:11:14.960
Because you need to reframe in your mind how you're going to get back to the habit of exercising.
00:11:14.960 --> 00:11:18.159
You did it for a while, you stopped.
00:11:18.159 --> 00:11:19.759
This is a pattern.
00:11:19.759 --> 00:11:36.240
Maybe not so much in the fall, but especially January, and then just before the summer, where people are thinking about wearing shorts and swimsuits, people start thinking again about exercise and eating right.
00:11:36.240 --> 00:11:41.840
But I want you to be doing your exercises because you know that you will feel better.
00:11:42.000 --> 00:11:45.679
What are the benefits you will get from that if you're consistent?
00:11:45.679 --> 00:11:47.600
So, first of all, make a plan.
00:11:47.600 --> 00:11:51.200
Number one, make a plan and write it down.
00:11:51.200 --> 00:11:54.240
So explore which you like.
00:11:54.240 --> 00:11:58.480
And it can be walk when you're going to walk.
00:11:58.480 --> 00:12:01.440
It can be high intensity interval training.
00:12:01.440 --> 00:12:10.080
You can pick the YouTube, it can be alternating between that, the high intensity interval training and weight training.
00:12:10.080 --> 00:12:14.799
Whatever you do, I want you to write your plan down.
00:12:14.799 --> 00:12:19.360
And what are you going to do for a backup?
00:12:19.360 --> 00:12:32.320
So let's say you oversleep one day and that's your time to do the exercise, then make time that night to do what you missed in the morning.
00:12:32.320 --> 00:12:39.200
Now, if the backup plan doesn't come through, track the progress on a calendar.
00:12:39.200 --> 00:12:42.240
Just you did an exercise that day.
00:12:42.240 --> 00:12:45.279
This is the step that's gonna make the difference.
00:12:45.279 --> 00:12:53.840
When you go back and look over the days that you've missed, I want you to add to that list information.
00:12:53.840 --> 00:13:00.000
Not beat yourself up, I'm a terrible person, I have no discipline, all that negative self-talk and still.
00:13:00.000 --> 00:13:12.399
I want you to say, I stayed up too late, I was binge watching TV, I uh didn't eat right, I didn't sleep well, and just see if you're having a pattern with that.
00:13:12.399 --> 00:13:15.200
Here's the other last point.
00:13:15.200 --> 00:13:21.360
Keep going, start over without beating yourself up, just start over.
00:13:21.360 --> 00:13:25.440
Tomorrow's a new day, and you can do it.
00:13:25.440 --> 00:13:36.879
I think that as you begin to do this, you're going to begin to notice all the benefits that you're receiving from the exercise.
00:13:36.879 --> 00:13:39.840
I know I have, but I love it.
00:13:39.840 --> 00:13:42.240
I'm confident now.
00:13:42.240 --> 00:13:49.440
Getting in and out of the car, getting up off of the chairs, walking, all of these different things.
00:13:49.440 --> 00:14:01.279
And realize that as you take your stance for health, your consistency is going to matter more than your intensity.
00:14:01.279 --> 00:14:12.720
Consistent is going to make more of a shift in your health than if you become obsessed with becoming a weekend warrior.
00:14:12.720 --> 00:14:14.799
Actually, that's going to then cause injuries.
00:14:14.799 --> 00:14:26.480
By the way, if anything is hurting, please come see us here at Stance if you're in the North Texas area, because that's a big deal too, is you want to get your alignment, you want to do all of these different things.
00:14:26.480 --> 00:14:31.840
But as far as exercise, what are you doing for your body?
00:14:31.840 --> 00:14:32.879
What is your plan?
00:14:32.879 --> 00:14:34.000
Write it down.
00:14:34.000 --> 00:14:41.120
I want you to learn to have a backup plan and track your progress.
00:14:41.120 --> 00:14:45.440
It can just be even a check mark or an E on a calendar.
00:14:45.440 --> 00:14:50.240
When you miss, why did you stop with just merely information?
00:14:50.240 --> 00:14:55.120
No beating yourself up aloud and keep going.
00:14:55.120 --> 00:14:57.600
I love this little talk.
00:14:57.600 --> 00:14:59.840
It went by super fast.
00:14:59.840 --> 00:15:04.639
And I did miss my co-podcast host.
00:15:04.639 --> 00:15:06.480
He'll be back next time.
