00:00:00
Speaker 1: We've heard of Aztec fast. Sounds like this, I guess.
00:00:04
Speaker 2: He's got blockers out in front, past the edge, near the goal line, leaps for the pylon, and he's in for a touchdown.
00:00:11
Speaker 1: A massive win for the Aztecs to start the season.
00:00:14
Speaker 2: A decisive Aztecs win tonight at Snapdragon Stadium.
00:00:18
Speaker 3: 53-20.
00:00:18
Speaker 2: And the Padres are loving.
00:00:19
Speaker 4: Life at Petco.
00:00:20
Speaker 1: And that straight three gets him looking. That's the ball game.
00:00:22
Speaker 5: Padres win.
00:00:27
Speaker 1: They take two out of.
00:00:28
Speaker 6: Three from the Yankees.
00:00:30
Speaker 4: Padres win.
00:00:31
Speaker 2: They hold on and beat the Nats today 3-2 the final.
00:00:34
Speaker 1: Let's head to the San Diego Sports 760 ESET Cybersecurity Studios with Schaefer and Sliwa.
00:00:41
Speaker 2: Alright, San Diego and Southern California, what's going on? It is hour one. Alan, we are back. It is good to see you, my friend.
00:00:47
Speaker 6: What is going on, my friend? What is going on? Did you take.
00:00:49
Speaker 2: I didn't see you here yesterday for Labor Day, which I found interesting.
00:00:53
Speaker 6: Oh, were you in here?
00:00:54
Speaker 2: Well, yeah, we did a show.
00:00:56
Speaker 6: Well, no, I did mine.
00:00:57
Speaker 4: I did a remote for.
00:01:00
Speaker 2: Kogo you did a kogo yeah.
00:01:02
Speaker 3: And then immediately after at 933 i was on jamming you were on jamming.
00:01:07
Speaker 2: Well it's in my deal is that right yours you must not have read it yeah let's do a jamming show on.
00:01:13
Speaker 3: I started at 6 a.m yesterday and did three hours on each radio station here.
00:01:18
Speaker 2: I'll tell you what man yesterday across the street yesterday would have been a good day to do a show Coming off Yankee series, coming off the insanity of the college football weekend, heading into the national series. I feel like since the last time we did a show, a lot has happened. Has it not? Have the Padres played four games?
00:01:35
Speaker 6: Played four games. They were getting ready to start the Yankee series.
00:01:38
Speaker 4: That's right.
00:01:39
Speaker 2: On Friday.
00:01:39
Speaker 3: So they played four games. And other than, was it Robbie Ray on Saturday?
00:01:45
Speaker 6: Yeah, it was Robbie Ray. That wasn't good. Yeah, that was cursing out everybody.
00:01:47
Speaker 2: I think you were texting me about it. But I will say, if you would have told me three and one... First of all, I would have thought they would have probably made up some.
00:01:53
Speaker 6: Ground, too.
00:01:54
Speaker 3: The four-day stretch was good baseball.
00:01:57
Speaker 4: It's good.
00:01:57
Speaker 2: It's absolutely fine.
00:01:58
Speaker 6: It's good baseball.
00:01:59
Speaker 3: A lot of good stuff to talk about.
00:02:01
Speaker 6: The only unfortunate piece of all of it.
00:02:03
Speaker 2: Can't pick up any.
00:02:04
Speaker 6: You didn't get anything. What was it now? Arizona?
00:02:08
Speaker 2: There's a ton to get into. Nick Pavetta, Kyle Glazer from formerly with Baseball America will join us next year at 315. But at the end of the day, Alan, the season ends. Look at your watch. I don't have one. But season ends the 27th. Today's the 8th. There's less than three weeks left, and they're looking up at Arizona. I know they play them.
00:02:24
Speaker 1: No, no, no.
00:02:25
Speaker 2: We're running out of days here. Every day is so important.
00:02:27
Speaker 6: I'm legitimately nervous for a couple of reasons.
00:02:30
Speaker 3: One of the reasons I'm nervous is you could not make the playoffs very easily, could not make the playoffs.
00:02:36
Speaker 6: Another part of me that's nervous is like, I'm going.
00:02:39
Speaker 3: To go back to kind of saying something, maybe a theme this last month. I kind of think they could be a tough out once they get in.
00:02:47
Speaker 2: If they get in.
00:02:48
Speaker 6: And that's the part of it.
00:02:49
Speaker 3: It's like, you know, and I do appreciate that they're handling, at least handling some business on their own. Now, maybe we look back and we say, hey, that series against pick whichever over that two and seven stretch, that could be the difference. I mean, but Arizona's starting to play well, but we've spent so much time talking about how they just got to worry about themselves. They're kind of worried about themselves and they still didn't gain any ground, which, you know, obviously is going to happen in this run.
00:03:15
Speaker 2: Like to your point, there's part of me that's like, You know, if Pavetta's back, and it's an if. He pitched very well yesterday, but now can he do it again in five or six days, and can he repeat it?
00:03:24
Speaker 6: And Duhart might come back soon. Jason Adam might come back soon.
00:03:28
Speaker 2: I'm thinking to myself, like, yo, if they're in the postseason, all of a sudden it feels different with your rotation if it has Nick Pavetta in it, for example, or your lineup might feel different, or your bullpen may feel different if you have Jason Adam in it. But, like, the key caveat, and we all know this, it's like the elephant in the room is like, are they going to make it? Are they going to make the postseason with 19 days to play? Or is it 18, 19 days to play? Are they going to make the postseason? And I truly believe it's a coin flip, Alan.
00:03:56
Speaker 3: I think it's a good, here's the part that, you know, you start jumping ahead and we shouldn't because in baseball, any team can beat anybody, but for a game or for a three game set, but you go look at, as I say, I don't want to jump ahead. And then immediately I jumped ahead. You go look at the final six games for Arizona.
00:04:16
Speaker 2: Yeah, what'd you say they were?
00:04:17
Speaker 6: Colorado, San Diego.
00:04:19
Speaker 3: You go look at the final six games for San Diego, Dodgers, and then Arizona.
00:04:26
Speaker 6: Yeah, it's a difference.
00:04:27
Speaker 3: What's it going to look like by the time you even get to that final weekend? That's why these stretch of games right now, you're going to need a little bit of a cushion.
00:04:37
Speaker 6: Right now, they don't have a cushion. They're a half game out.
00:04:39
Speaker 3: But, I mean, you want to get to a point where it's like, all right, we know... You take two or three, you're in. You just don't want to be in any position here other than that. I mean, of course, you wish you could be a little bit more selfish, but I don't know if they're in a position to be selfish right now. Arizona doesn't have that tough of a schedule left. I'm looking at their schedule. They do have the Yankees at some point, but there's some... Kind of some layups here in between.
00:05:02
Speaker 2: It's kind of similar because the Padres still have San Fran and Colorado. They both have the outlier tough series, Yankees, Dodgers, depending on the team.
00:05:10
Speaker 6: And then they play each other. I completely agree with you.
00:05:15
Speaker 2: Are we going to get to a spot?
00:05:17
Speaker 6: Pull over if you're on the road for a quick second while I get this.
00:05:21
Speaker 2: We're probably trending towards the Arizona series determining who's in and who's.
00:05:25
Speaker 5: Out, right?
00:05:26
Speaker 2: In some form or fashion. That's likely where we're heading.
00:05:30
Speaker 3: Neither team Has the top 10 toughest schedule.
00:05:37
Speaker 2: Okay.
00:05:37
Speaker 6: Toughest. Toughest.
00:05:39
Speaker 4: Right.
00:05:40
Speaker 6: I'm at 19.
00:05:43
Speaker 3: Oh, I'm at 20. Arizona appears at number 20.
00:05:46
Speaker 2: So they have the 20th.
00:05:47
Speaker 3: So the 10th easiest schedule is Arizona.
00:05:51
Speaker 6: Is Arizona.
00:05:51
Speaker 2: What's San Diego?
00:05:52
Speaker 6: 22.
00:05:55
Speaker 2: So easier.
00:05:56
Speaker 3: Yeah.
00:05:56
Speaker 6: A little bit easier.
00:05:57
Speaker 2: But now it's so semantics, right?
00:06:00
Speaker 6: Oh, don't give me this whole semantic stuff.
00:06:02
Speaker 3: I just went out of my way. No, I just went to the website. I typed in the wrong one to begin with.
00:06:08
Speaker 6: No, you're right. Semantic. Sure. But it does.
00:06:12
Speaker 3: Arizona has two tough series left. They got the Yankees and the Padres. The Padres have two tough series left. It's the Dodgers and it's the Diamondbacks. And then both of them have just kind of some weird teams here. The thing I don't like about the Dodger series is I still think they're going to be playing for something.
00:06:31
Speaker 4: Oh yeah.
00:06:32
Speaker 6: At least they're going to be playing for that wild card.
00:06:33
Speaker 2: At least some C.
00:06:34
Speaker 3: They're going to be playing to avoid a wild card spot and get that by.
00:06:37
Speaker 7: Yeah.
00:06:37
Speaker 2: I completely agree with that. It's just, dude, I'm sitting there yesterday and this is how I'm going to treat every single game. Now, every time Arizona wins, I'm like, must win for San Diego. I know Arizona in this bizarre game yesterday that some people are probably aware of way with five, four and 10, all nine runs were scored in the 10th inning.
00:06:52
Speaker 5: Yeah.
00:06:52
Speaker 6: It By the way, Arizona has won... Their last four wins are all by one run.
00:06:58
Speaker 2: So I see this result, and I'm literally watching this Padres game like it's a playoff game. I'm like, they have to win the game. And to their credit, they did. And that's just.
00:07:08
Speaker 6: Where we are.
00:07:08
Speaker 2: From here on out, it's like you have to keep an eye on Arizona, and you have to win these games when Arizona wins, and that's just how it's going to be.
00:07:16
Speaker 3: Okay, here's my question. Where are they at wins-wise now? I've got to play this out here.
00:07:21
Speaker 2: How many wins do the Padres have?
00:07:22
Speaker 6: Yeah, because we had.
00:07:24
Speaker 3: There's 76 right now, 76 and 68.
00:07:28
Speaker 6: What did we say? It's going to take to make the plays. We say 86.
00:07:31
Speaker 2: I think we might've said 88. You're in say 80, 88.
00:07:35
Speaker 6: You're a hundred percent.
00:07:36
Speaker 2: Of course.
00:07:37
Speaker 3: And we were saying that before we were saying 88, it's going to get you in, but then we're like, does 86 get you in?
00:07:43
Speaker 1: How many games do they.
00:07:44
Speaker 6: Have left now?
00:07:45
Speaker 4: 10 and eight.
00:07:45
Speaker 2: I don't feel great.
00:07:46
Speaker 6: No 10 and eight. I don't think you're getting it.
00:07:47
Speaker 2: I don't feel great. So you're going to might need to, you're going to need to play better.
00:07:51
Speaker 6: You know what? You're probably 88. It's the number. Like 87, you're not sure.
00:07:55
Speaker 3: 87, you're not sure.
00:07:57
Speaker 6: 86, I don't think gets it done.
00:08:00
Speaker 2: If you're wondering what Fangraph says in terms of playoff chances, what do you think it says?
00:08:04
Speaker 3: So they got a half game right now, Arizona. I'll say the percentage last week was at 40. So I'll say the percentage went up a little bit. I'm going to say 43.
00:08:16
Speaker 2: Very close. 44.4.
00:08:18
Speaker 6: I work for them.
00:08:20
Speaker 2: You work for Finnegan.
00:08:21
Speaker 6: I was there.
00:08:23
Speaker 2: You got to pay the bills.
00:08:25
Speaker 6: I immediately came over.
00:08:26
Speaker 3: You need multiple streams funneled. Whatever those investors say.
00:08:32
Speaker 2: That's exactly right. So 44.4 for the Padres. 55.6 for the Diamondbacks. You know what that means? No one else has even considered it anymore.
00:08:40
Speaker 6: 55.6 for Arizona.
00:08:41
Speaker 2: 44.4 for San Diego.
00:08:47
Speaker 3: All right, so that gives us a little bit of an idea there.
00:08:51
Speaker 6: So I think this is the theme of it.
00:08:53
Speaker 3: It's like you want to feel great about these last four games, but there's a little emptiness inside.
00:08:59
Speaker 6: That's, that's, that's how I feel.
00:09:00
Speaker 3: I I'm, you know, yesterday watching them win again, a close game, three, two, like you said, they had to have it here.
00:09:07
Speaker 2: They are.
00:09:08
Speaker 6: It's it was Bradley, Maury home, Mason Miller.
00:09:11
Speaker 3: You're going back to like using all your best relievers to just squeak out a one run win over the nationals. And then you take a deep breath. You look and you're like, they're fricking still.
00:09:20
Speaker 2: On the outside and they're playing well.
00:09:23
Speaker 6: So there is a little piece that, you know, you don't feel all that great.
00:09:26
Speaker 2: About Kyle Glazer. Formerly with Baseball America, great baseball writer and reporter will join us on the other side. 00:10:24
Speaker 2: Down the stretch, we come here in the National League. Great to reconnect with Kyle Glazer, the veteran baseball writer and reporter with us on Schaefer & Slee with San Diego Sports 760. What a What a run we're in here. What a race we're in here with the Padres and the Diamondbacks. Kyle, let's start with Nick Pavetta and what we saw yesterday, the five scoreless innings. Were you surprised to see that? And can he be counted on, in your opinion, from here on out for the Padres?
00:10:50
Speaker 4: I'm not really surprised. Nick Pavetta is a very, very, very intense competitor. He had all the juices flowing. He's someone that, you know, when he takes the ball, it's going to come out and, you know, go a hundred percent knows the grindstone. And then he did that. There's no taking it easy with him. So it was good to see him come out there and pitch as well as he did.
00:11:08
Speaker 1: And look at healthy.
00:11:09
Speaker 4: Nick Pavetta is a frontline pitcher that you feel really comfortable handing the ball to in game one or two, a playoff series. So it's, If he can continue to replicate that performance over these last few weeks, A, the Potters are going to be in a much stronger position to make the playoffs in the first place, and B, potentially advance and do some damage if they get there.
00:11:28
Speaker 3: Kyle, I know for us, or at least from a fan perspective, you look at things and you're like, ah, that's it.
00:11:33
Speaker 6: He pitched. He's good to go. He's going to be back to his regular form.
00:11:38
Speaker 3: Just what do you think happens here over these next couple of days that will determine that Pavetta is good to go or the recovery, it sounds like it's going to tell most of the answers.
00:11:50
Speaker 4: It's always about the recovery. How does he bounce back, you know, the day after? How does he feel two days after? And also, was there anything where maybe he was overcompensating with a different part of his body? You'll remember Michael King last year, missed most of the year with an arm injury, came back, pitched, then had to go on the aisle with a knee injury because his mechanics were off and he was overcompensating. So, There's no question. You have to watch very, very carefully here over these next couple of days to see how he responds and make sure his entire body feels good, not just his arm. But at the end of the day, he's someone that, especially after what happened on Lake Elsinore, I don't think he would come back if he was not feeling 100% just given what has already happened this year.
00:12:33
Speaker 2: Looked the part yesterday, obviously, with the five Scoreless innings against the Nats. Kyle Glazer is with us right now. Again, the Padres getting ready for the Nats game two coming up tonight. How do you think the young catcher Ethan Salas has handled himself in the limited opportunity so far?
00:12:48
Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I think what you knew about Ethan Salas was that he is a very, very, very advanced defensive catcher who is going to call a really good game, receive really well, control the run game, and do a lot of the intangible things you want to see from catchers. He's 20 years old. There's a lot of physical development left. He had a good year hitting double and triple A, but... He's not a major league ready hitter. So again, it's small sample is over 10. He'll be fine long-term, but this is kind of what to expect from him. The September call up is, Hey, we'll do some good things defensively. Maybe we'll have some quality at bats for you, but expecting him to be some sort of offensive force who comes up and mashes in September, that just was never realistic. And that kind of expectation would not have been fair to put on the kid.
00:13:32
Speaker 3: Kyle Glazer, veteran baseball writer and reporter joining us here on the Schaefer and Sliwa show. I got a handful. Obviously, we're under a month left of the season. Padres in Arizona both fighting for a wildcard spot.
00:13:46
Speaker 6: Let's just kind of predict it here.
00:13:48
Speaker 3: If the Padres are going to grab that final wildcard spot, what do you think is going to be the reasons why? What are some of the key things that you think happened in order for San Diego to grab that final wildcard spot?
00:14:04
Speaker 4: The biggest thing is taking care of business against the teams they're supposed to. The Padres right now are in a stretch of 13 straight games against sub-500 teams. This is the kind of stretch where if you're in the playoff race and you're holding on by a thread or trying to move into playoff position, this is the kind of stretch for the Padres. You need to go 10-3. The fact that they won the series against the Yankees at home coming off a brutal road trip against Tampa and Cincinnati, that was really promising. Of course, winning the opener against the Nats last night. But three against the Nats, three against the Giants, four against the Rockies, three against the Marlins. Again, the Potters need to take care of business against who they should. And if they do that, they'll be in great position going into that final six games of the year against the Dodgers and Diamondbacks.
00:14:46
Speaker 2: Kyle, how remarkable has it been to watch Tatis' second half of the year, maybe his last 80 or 90 games? From what we saw initially to what we've seen over the last three months, I mean, I think if he would have done this for six months, he'd probably be like a top two or three NL MVP candidate.
00:15:04
Speaker 4: Yeah, look, I mean, since the All-Star break, he's hitting 296 with a 971 OPS with 15 homers and 36 RBIs and 47 games. I mean, yeah, that's MVP caliber performance. I think the thing with Tatis was even when you watched him earlier this season and the numbers weren't there, He was making hard contact. He was drawing walks. He was stealing bases. He was playing good defense. He was doing a lot of good things. I really wasn't that worried about him as much as a lot of people were freaking out because when you watched him, he was still making adjustments at bat to at bat, game to game. It was only a matter of time that it was going to come for him. Now it's come even louder than I expected. I really wasn't worried about him. The guys that I was way more worried about watching them were Manny Machado and Jackson Merrill. Machado just did not look like he had the bat speed anymore, and Merrill was chasing in a way that made you really wonder if he ever really bounced back from his concussion last year. And those two guys have been playing really, really well recently. I mean, talk about hot second halves. Merrill's been fantastic all the way around, offensively and defensively. And Manny's, you know, hitting for average and getting on base and showcasing a little power here.
00:16:10
Speaker 7: So.
00:16:11
Speaker 4: I'm actually more impressed by the turnarounds of Machado and Merrill. Because Tatis, you saw the underlying good things going on. The other two was looking pretty rough early.
00:16:20
Speaker 3: Kyle, I know it's been a big conversation. Some of the usage from the bullpen, specifically Adrian Morihone and Mason Miller. If you're Craig Stammen, I mean, what are you supposed to do in this situation? I'll just take yesterday's game as a perfect example. They needed Morihone again. They needed Mason Miller again. And it's a one-run win. for those who are kind of having that conversation about some of their usage, is there anything he can do? Cause it seems like if there's a close game, you got to use both of those guys.
00:16:52
Speaker 4: Yeah, it's not about stamina. It's about the starting pitchers going out and giving this team quality innings, you know, consistently getting six, six plus. And look, the Padres didn't have that for a lot of this year due to the injuries, their starting rotation. Let's not forget there was a period before the deadline. They had two starting pitchers for all intents and purposes or having to bullpen their way through three games out of five. Now things are better, but it comes down to those guys performing. If Michael King and Robbie Ray and the rest of the staff go do what they're capable of and give the Padres six-plus every start, it's going to take a lot of pressure off the bullpen. But if they're only going five and these guys have to piece together four innings every night and the offense isn't really performing to its best capabilities, then, yeah, it's going to be tight. This is more about the players and what position they put Craig Stammen in than Stammen necessarily himself.
00:17:40
Speaker 2: Kyle, how do you see what's played out with both Casey Mize and Robbie Ray? As in, like, what's gone wrong and can it be fixed here in a short period of time?
00:17:50
Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, with Robbie Ray, look, you know what you're going to get with him, right? You're going to get really good stuff and you're going to get some wildness. This is always a guy who is going to issue walks. Yeah, I think at the end of the day, you want the control to be better than it's been. You certainly don't want as many walks as strikeouts. I do think this is a veteran pitcher who knows what he's doing. And, you know, coming over to a new team, there's always an adjustment. I wouldn't be shocked if over his last three or four starts, he'd be kind of fit or something. Now we see a little bit better strike throwing, you know, Casey minds. It was really a shame, right? He had a bad first start and then two really good starts. And then he sprained his ankle. So we haven't really seen it when a hundred percent, you know, healthy Casey Myers. I know he says he's healthy, but yeah, ankle injuries, those tend to linger. So I think it's just tough with him because of that freak injury that happened to really evaluate him. Cause look, it has not been good, but he's way, way better than what he's shown. I really do think the ankles affecting him.
00:18:45
Speaker 6: Final one for me.
00:18:46
Speaker 3: And just as we kind of look at, there's a little bit of progress here from Jason Adams.
00:18:52
Speaker 6: Sounds like he's getting close and do hard. Sounds like he's getting close.
00:18:56
Speaker 3: Just some of these players that could potentially be making their return. Is there a, You could throw Gavin sheets on that list. I know we don't have anything on Gavin sheets, but just naming off some of these guys, one or two of these players that you think could be so important to this, this stretch run.
00:19:12
Speaker 4: I mean, Jason Adams, the big one, this is a guy who is one of the best relievers in baseball when he's healthy. And right now we talk about that potter's bullpen and just how many innings, some of their high leverage arms have had to take on throughout the course of the year. If you get Jason Adam back to just take a little bit of a load off and give the potters another option in eighth or ninth innings, That's just going to make the team that much better and help the other relievers be more rested and more consistent, more effective down the stretch. That's the big one for me. But I will say Miguel Andujar has produced some real right-handed power. We saw a lot of doubles, a lot of homers early. And this is a Padres offense that even though it's been better, it's still an offense that's in the bottom 10 of baseball and runs scored. They need every ounce of help they can get. And I do think getting Andahar back will make a difference.
00:19:58
Speaker 2: Stretch run in the National League. We'll see if the Padres can make it to the postseason or not here in the next couple of weeks. Kyle, always appreciate your insight, man, for our listeners. Thanks so much for joining us.
00:20:08
Speaker 4: My pleasure. Anytime, guys.
00:20:09
Speaker 2: Great stuff. Kyle Glazer.
00:20:11
Speaker 6: Can't believe that, man. You said.
00:20:13
Speaker 2: What'd I say?
00:20:13
Speaker 6: You said you don't want Ray or Mize on the team. You said cut him.
00:20:18
Speaker 2: I did say it. No, I didn't say that, but they have struggled mightily. And we'll see Casey Mize tonight. I don't want to see no Casey Mize struggle tonight.
00:20:25
Speaker 5: Okay.
00:20:25
Speaker 6: Right?
00:20:26
Speaker 2: Oh, they're down 5-0.
00:20:27
Speaker 3: I've had confidence in each one of these guys' starts. And I'm like, oh, they're turning around.
00:20:31
Speaker 6: Yeah, well.
00:20:31
Speaker 3: And I don't know why I say it like that, but I do when I'm talking to myself.
00:20:35
Speaker 2: Did you say that in the same way?
00:20:37
Speaker 6: Turn it around.
00:20:37
Speaker 2: Well, tonight better be tonight. The turnaround starts.
00:20:39
Speaker 6: I'm done with that.
00:20:40
Speaker 2: Against the Nats. I'm not done yet. I'm going to be, I'm not done until after tonight. All right. We're going to hear from Kevin Ace. He was out with Ben Fletcher earlier today on the impact of Nick Pavetta. If the Padres can make the post season, plus Andre Hagverdian from the East village times on San Diego state's season opening win over Portland state. And Alan is showing us food at this spread YouTube as well, that we'll discuss on the other side. We'll share for it's Lee with San Diego sports.
00:21:05
Speaker 6: Can't wait any longer.
00:21:07
Speaker 2: Live on the iHeartRadio app. All right. J.
00:21:09
Speaker 4: Prince Lee.
00:21:10
Speaker 2: Well, I, I, Alan needs an apology because I was telling him we have some food in here. Spectacular. Tell us about the food we have in here.
00:21:18
Speaker 8: All right.
00:21:19
Speaker 6: Taste of a old town.
00:21:20
Speaker 3: Yeah. Thursday, September 10th, 6 PM to 9 PM.
00:21:26
Speaker 6: It's phenomenal.
00:21:26
Speaker 3: They got over around 15 restaurant or 14 different old town restaurants that are all involved in this. So this upcoming Thursday, you can go to tasteofoldtown.org. General admission, you get taste from all 14 participating restaurants. $ 40 general admission.
00:21:44
Speaker 6: VIP is $ 55, which includes a tequila tour as well. Kids tickets, just $ 15.
00:21:49
Speaker 3: If you're in San Diego, what the hell are you doing on Thursday?
00:21:52
Speaker 6: Get out to Old Town. We just had a nice taco right there. Did the flour tortilla spread.
00:21:59
Speaker 3: Little carnitas on there through some guacamole, a little bit of salsa on there.
00:22:03
Speaker 6: And let's, but here's the.
00:22:04
Speaker 2: Thing, by the way, tequila tours for adults, right? That's more of a 21 plus. That's more of a, that's what they're doing this time around.
00:22:11
Speaker 6: Yeah.
00:22:12
Speaker 2: So we both have the, the tacos spectacular.
00:22:14
Speaker 5: Yeah.
00:22:15
Speaker 2: And I said, I need a napkin.
00:22:16
Speaker 6: Yep.
00:22:16
Speaker 8: Right.
00:22:16
Speaker 2: The break.
00:22:17
Speaker 1: I'm like, I need a nap.
00:22:18
Speaker 6: So you know what you did?
00:22:18
Speaker 2: And I see you, you're, you're eating this thing. So I go out and I get myself a napkin. I washed my hands, but I got myself a napkin. I come back in, you're like, where's the napkin? Did you bring me a napkin? I'm like, no, I absolutely didn't.
00:22:32
Speaker 6: How come that didn't go through your mind?
00:22:33
Speaker 2: It didn't even cross at once.
00:22:34
Speaker 1: But how's that possible?
00:22:35
Speaker 2: Because I only really was thinking about myself.
00:22:37
Speaker 5: John.
00:22:38
Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
00:22:39
Speaker 6: We're both eating the taco together.
00:22:40
Speaker 1: I know.
00:22:41
Speaker 3: If you don't have a napkin, that means I don't have a napkin.
00:22:45
Speaker 6: I thought maybe you have everything in your bag.
00:22:47
Speaker 1: I don't have a napkin.
00:22:48
Speaker 6: You have nectarines. And then you went out. Listen, listen. You need some paprika? Exactly.
00:22:54
Speaker 2: You have like dental equipment in your bag. I would expect you to have a nappy. You have everything. One time you had like, you've had everything, dude. What did you have that one time I.
00:23:04
Speaker 6: Was shocked by?
00:23:04
Speaker 5: Fruit.
00:23:04
Speaker 7: I had fruit.
00:23:05
Speaker 2: No, but you had like a base for your laptop.
00:23:08
Speaker 6: We were out on the road. You got to have a base to get that thing up.
00:23:11
Speaker 2: So I figured you'd have a napkin.
00:23:12
Speaker 6: So all I'm asking is like you're going out there. Just grab a couple napkins. Here's the only out that I give you.
00:23:19
Speaker 4: Yeah, please.
00:23:20
Speaker 6: You went to go wash your hands.
00:23:21
Speaker 2: I washed my hands.
00:23:21
Speaker 6: It's a little bit different. I washed my hands.
00:23:23
Speaker 3: Because if you went to the kitchen, if you went to the kitchen and just grabbed a couple of napkins.
00:23:27
Speaker 2: I also wouldn't have.
00:23:28
Speaker 3: And then came in here and just threw away like a stack. You know how people grab napkins? By the way, these those.
00:23:34
Speaker 6: Types of people I got issues with.
00:23:35
Speaker 4: Oh, do you?
00:23:36
Speaker 3: Don't be the one you grab like 13 napkins. You use two and you throw the rest away.
00:23:41
Speaker 2: Yeah, but better to be one heavy than one light. Like I always got to have an extra napkin.
00:23:47
Speaker 6: OK, but don't throw away the napkins.
00:23:49
Speaker 2: I don't typically keep them.
00:23:50
Speaker 6: You got 10 extra napkins. Keep them.
00:23:52
Speaker 2: The best part about napkins in like stores is they're just given away. So like, you don't really have a responsibility.
00:23:59
Speaker 3: You know that this is, I'm finding out a lot about you, but the whole napkin situation.
00:24:02
Speaker 2: I bought the Starbucks coffee.
00:24:05
Speaker 6: Okay.
00:24:05
Speaker 2: So I'm going to, you know, I take advantage of the offerings of the napkins.
00:24:09
Speaker 6: You probably walk out with that thing, the whole milk. You probably just.
00:24:13
Speaker 2: No, but you know, when people are taking the napkins, they just keep taking. They just keep taking. I've been there.
00:24:18
Speaker 6: I walk out with like 18 honey packets.
00:24:21
Speaker 2: Oh, that's my wife. Kristen will go to a hotel and I come home. I'm like, where'd we get this pillow? She's like, Marriott. I'm like, you can't take the pillow. They're going to bill us for the, she takes everything. She goes under the sink. You don't take this stuff from under the sink.
00:24:39
Speaker 6: Well, what did she get?
00:24:40
Speaker 5: Yeah.
00:24:40
Speaker 2: The little soaps.
00:24:41
Speaker 6: The little soaps are fine. She can't take the pillow.
00:24:45
Speaker 2: She'll take like toilet paper. I'm like, we could just buy it. They have it available at Costco.
00:24:50
Speaker 6: That stuff you can't take.
00:24:51
Speaker 2: Is that insane?
00:24:51
Speaker 6: Yeah, no, that stuff you can't take. She's taking like mugs. The lotion and the soap. That's not a big deal.
00:24:57
Speaker 2: I learned it from her.
00:24:58
Speaker 3: She's taking like, she actually walked out with a table. She's like, we got a new desk.
00:25:02
Speaker 2: She's taking silverware. She's taking mugs. She likes the mugs. I like the mug. I'm like, the mugs, it's going to be 60 bucks. They're going to bill us.
00:25:10
Speaker 6: But you don't actually get billed, do you? She should get billed.
00:25:13
Speaker 3: I know her.
00:25:14
Speaker 2: If she got billed, she'd call and be like.
00:25:16
Speaker 6: You should. Yeah, that's right. She'd call and be like.
00:25:19
Speaker 2: It wasn't me. She's drinking from the mug as she's talking to him.
00:25:22
Speaker 6: That's pretty funny.
00:25:23
Speaker 7: All right.
00:25:24
Speaker 2: Coming up in 10 minutes, Andre Hekverdian. He covers the Aztecs for the East Village Times. A resounding, convincing win for Sean Lewis' Aztecs. Saturday night, UCLA, a stiffer test, obviously, Saturday at the Rose Bowl. Can we hear from Kevin Acey? We can, right? This was with Ben Fletcher earlier today, the Fletch Zone, on Nick Pavetta and what he could mean to a playoff rotation if the Padres make it.
00:25:47
Speaker 1: Oh yeah.
00:25:47
Speaker 5: And because the playoffs, you can do all sorts of things.
00:25:50
Speaker 7: What if Nick with that? And I'm just totally, totally just spit balling. Like what if Nick, Nick Pavetta is only capable of say 75 pitches. They don't want to push him beyond that. And so we're talking about four.
00:26:02
Speaker 5: Really good innings or five really good innings.
00:26:05
Speaker 4: Like, Perfect.
00:26:06
Speaker 5: That's what you do in the playoffs. So, you know, that's what you need. Will you take seven?
00:26:11
Speaker 4: Sure.
00:26:12
Speaker 5: But come on, you are trying, it's going to be a close game.
00:26:16
Speaker 7: And you are going to maneuver.
00:26:18
Speaker 5: Matchups and, you know, put forth the best puzzle of nine innings that you can do.
00:26:25
Speaker 7: And Nick Pavetta is another piece to put in that puzzle.
00:26:31
Speaker 2: A piece to put in the puzzle.
00:26:32
Speaker 5: Okay.
00:26:34
Speaker 3: How do you, how do you feel as we sit here now? What, what, what's your, like, what's your initial reaction on Pavetta?
00:26:41
Speaker 2: I was like, wow. I was, I was floored. Honestly, I was floored.
00:26:45
Speaker 6: I was probably more floored when they announced like.
00:26:48
Speaker 2: He was starting tomorrow.
00:26:49
Speaker 4: Yeah.
00:26:49
Speaker 2: That too. But five innings, four of which he went one, two, three.
00:26:52
Speaker 6: Yep.
00:26:53
Speaker 2: The other got out of a second and third jam.
00:26:54
Speaker 6: I think he's 16 of 18.
00:26:56
Speaker 4: Retired?
00:26:56
Speaker 6: Yeah.
00:26:57
Speaker 2: I mean, now he wasn't throwing hard.
00:26:59
Speaker 6: Let me double check that number here.
00:27:01
Speaker 2: He wasn't throwing hard.
00:27:02
Speaker 5: Yep.
00:27:03
Speaker 6: Scare you a little bit.
00:27:04
Speaker 2: I was very impressed.
00:27:05
Speaker 7: Okay.
00:27:05
Speaker 2: But yeah, I mean, do I expect him to do that every time out? No, not necessarily.
00:27:09
Speaker 3: I'm, I'm with you on the wildly impressed 15 of 17 batters, five scoreless innings, retiring 15.
00:27:18
Speaker 6: Here's my, here's my concern.
00:27:19
Speaker 8: Okay.
00:27:21
Speaker 3: I almost like, I don't know why I'm doing this, but I don't want to get too excited about Pavetta.
00:27:26
Speaker 6: Like I need to hear that is good. how he's recovered. And here's his next start coming.
00:27:36
Speaker 7: I agree.
00:27:36
Speaker 3: Cause I think that's like the legit next step, but let's play out a scenario and let's play out what, what the scenario is here for AC. Now you got to get in the playoffs, but here's the scenario that would play out. You got a three game set. You pick whichever team it is in the wild card. We're going to be your three starters. And I don't think you could answer that question today. I think the rest of this regular season is going to dictate who the Padres are going to have after game one.
00:28:07
Speaker 6: I know Michael King's going to be game one.
00:28:10
Speaker 3: I could sit here and make a case for you that Walker Bueller should be one of those, should get a start in a three-game set. I can make a case for you that, well, let's see Casey Mize, what he does over these handful of games.
00:28:20
Speaker 6: Robbie Ray, of course, his being a veteran. But before this.
00:28:24
Speaker 3: Season started, If I had told you that the Padres were going to make the playoffs, you would be like, yeah, this is a no-brainer. It's Nick Pavetta and it's Michael King that are getting those first two games. I think there has to be, from this point on, take all the names out for a quick second. Whoever's producing the best should be. And if it's, if it's Walker Bueller, then it's Walker Bueller. But I feel like we're at a stage of the season where I have some, there's still a lot of questions left to determine what that would look like.
00:28:53
Speaker 2: I would be surprised if we got through the regular season and the Padres are in the post season and Nick Pavetta was healthy. If he didn't start one of the three games, right. I would be surprised if they get to the post season and he's healthy. If he didn't start one of the three games.
00:29:08
Speaker 3: To have his first start in almost five months coming in September.
00:29:13
Speaker 2: I know, but if he's able to make it in the next three weeks.
00:29:15
Speaker 3: But I guess that's, but wouldn't you agree that like, isn't this now just going to be based on, let's say Robbie Ray's next handful of starts are really good. You traded for him. Let's say Casey Myers was really good. Let's say Walker Bueller, who's the type of player that I think you do want to hand the ball to in the postseason. It's a good problem to have if we get there.
00:29:35
Speaker 5: It is.
00:29:36
Speaker 2: Are you going to trust Casey Myers over Nick Pavella?
00:29:39
Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
00:29:40
Speaker 2: Because then you second-guess that. If it doesn't go, I got it.
00:29:43
Speaker 6: I got it. I need, I need to see a lot more from Nick as well.
00:29:47
Speaker 2: I do too. But if he's healthy, I think he, and they're in, I could see him making a start in that series.
00:29:51
Speaker 4: Sure.
00:29:52
Speaker 2: I drag Verdean East village times with more on the Aztecs. Winner for Portland state. We'll look ahead to UCLA on Saturday at four 15. We'll tell you about our giveaways today coming up as well, including a four pack of tickets to see Motley crew coming up on Friday, September 18th. Stay with the Schaefer and Sliwa San Diego sports, seven 60 live on the I heart radio app.
00:30:16
Speaker 3: SDFC returns to Snapdragon Stadium tomorrow night when they take on San Jose Earthquakes. Our pre-match coverage with Adrian and Darren begins at 7 p.m.
00:30:27
Speaker 6: On your home for SDFC. San Diego Sports, 760, trying to rebound after that loss. We'll get into that.
00:30:32
Speaker 2: We will get into it. But let's catch up right now with Andre Hegverdian. He covers the Aztecs for the East Village Times. Of course, San Diego State played this past weekend against Portland State, a big 53-20 win. They'll play this weekend. You can hear it right here on 760 against UCLA State. at 415. So, Andre, as always, we appreciate you joining us here on Schaefer & Sliwa and San Diego Sports 760. Just first things first, your overall impressions of the way San Diego State looked at its opener. Started slow, but finished fast in a 53-20 win.
00:31:02
Speaker 8: Thank you guys for having me back on for another season. It was a convincing win. Anytime you put up 53 points, a Snapdragon Stadium record, you get big plays from all three phases, offense, defense, special teams. Those are all very positive things to build upon in any game, regardless of the opponent. But I think if you dig into the details, as Sean Lewis and his staff I'm sure has already done, you know, twice, three times over. There's a lot to clean up a lot to fix. I think as a competition gets tougher starting this weekend, they're, they're going to have to improve upon if they want to have a chance to win games, not just in non-conference, but in the PAC 12.
00:31:44
Speaker 3: What one of his, you can say part of the way he described Saturday's game, he used the word sloppy. And by the way, that's probably expected to start out the season. What What are some of the things, you know, for you that just watching those games and that stuck out to you or watching this specific game that stuck out to you in regards to some of the sloppy play that you feel like, all right, this is definitely something that they'll have to clean up against UCLA.
00:32:12
Speaker 8: First of all, it's the turnovers, three turnovers. Definitely all of those kind of hurt. Jaden Delangal's interception early in the game kind of stalled a good promising drive. And then the punt drop by Acevedo that gave Portland State the ball at the 10-yard line led to a touchdown. And then the fumble, I think, by Christian Washington. You start with the turnovers. Penalties, they weren't really bad. I think they had six penalties, but there were some key ones there. And then some missed assignments. Lucky Sutton had three touchdowns, but he only had 58 yards on 18 carries. He was continually met by defenders at the line of scrimmage, so there were some breakdowns in the blocking up front that definitely hindered Lucky to get going. I think those are some of the things he alluded to when he talked about the floppiness.
00:33:09
Speaker 2: Andre Agverdian, East Village Times with us right now. Schaefer and Slee with San Diego Sports 760. So many new names and faces on the defense. What would you make of the unit overall, kind of bending but not breaking early in the win?
00:33:25
Speaker 8: Yeah, you know, bend but don't break is a great way to say it because they gave up a lot of yards. They gave up a lot of first downs, long drives. The time of possession battle, I think, was 33 to 26 and a half. 27. So, you know, they gave up a lot of yards. They were on the field for a lot of plays, but they only gave up one touchdown. And that was the 10 yard drive after the fumble, they held to two field goals early in the game that, you know, kind of gave their offense a chance to, to get ignited.
00:33:55
Speaker 4: Um, so there.
00:33:57
Speaker 8: Was a lot to build on, especially with so many new guys playing together. Um, The line of scrimmage, they didn't really get any pressure on the quarterback. They got one sack late in the game, but I think those are the areas that they're going to need to improve. And then the secondary wasn't tested too many times deep. I think we got used to having Chris Johnson and Bryce Phillips outside there last.
00:34:22
Speaker 4: Year, kind of.
00:34:25
Speaker 8: Manning up and playing guys one-on-one. And I don't know if you're going to see too much of that this year. So I think those are areas that they're going to need to clean up as they get to UCLA and the rest of those games.
00:34:38
Speaker 3: Andre, how unique was it to see? Is this just this part of the, this early in the season? To have 82 of the 94 players who dressed up actually play against Portland State, is that unique? Is this just kind of the world of college football where you've got so many new players every year trying to kind of figure it out on the fly?
00:34:59
Speaker 6: How unique is that stat?
00:35:03
Speaker 8: Yeah, it's a new territory because of the five-for-five rule. There's no need to redshirt true freshmen anymore. because you're not saving them for that fifth year because they're going to get it anyway. And so not just did they have guys in specific packages on offense that they could use, but, you know, with the score, the way it ended up, I think it gave them an opportunity to play some, you know, third string guys, some young guys, Ty Noah, Lave, who's a safety true freshman. I think he got something like 26, 27 snaps. So those are, yeah, you're not going to see many games where 80-plus players get snaps, but it's also the new college football landscape. And, you know, you may not see 80 anymore the rest of this year, but you could get close to 50 to 60.
00:35:53
Speaker 2: Andre Agverdian with us, covers the Aztecs for the East Village Times. So just turning our attention to UCLA, right? Saturday at the Rose Bowl. The Aztecs haven't been there forever, but 2019, they won there. Their only win ever. Ever in the series in watching UCLA in week one, they were very impressive with the new head coach, Bob Chesney. They win at Cal by 21 points. What will it take? What are some of the keys for San Diego State to put themselves in a position at least where they're in that game late?
00:36:22
Speaker 8: Well, I mean, UCLA and Cal were tied with about nine minutes left in that game. And UCLA got two interceptions, scored two rushing touchdowns, kind of put the game away. But, you know, Cal was in there up until the end. So obviously those turnovers, you can't give the ball to the UCLA defense and you have to take it away from UCLA offense, I think is going to be important. And then the rushing game, you know, UCLA rushed for 277 yards. Some big plays, I think all six of their touchdowns were rushing touchdowns. So it's going to have to start with stopping that. The rush defense did a good job against Portland State, but that's really not what they're known for. So, you know, it's tough to say that based on that one game that we know how the rush defense is going to be against UCLA, but that's going to have to be primary focus number one.
00:37:15
Speaker 3: Andre, what could a game like Saturday do for San Diego State? And I'm not even necessarily saying that San Diego state goes up there and they win, but let's just, you're in the fourth quarter, six minutes left to go.
00:37:25
Speaker 6: And this game can go either way.
00:37:28
Speaker 3: Is there anything to that, or is it, no, this is kind of based off you either win or you lose, and the way college football is structured today, obviously the Aztecs now in the Pac-12 and how important it is for the conference to kind of everybody lift up the conference together. Does it play into the hands if it's a close game and they don't pull it out, or is this just one of those situations you either come away with a W or you don't?
00:37:56
Speaker 8: I think it can help them even in a close loss, especially on the road, playing a power 14, you know, Fresno state went into USC and, you know, got beat pretty handily. And I think that was kind of a, a stain on the PAC 12 that, you know, there was a big game that they had that the team did not perform, but I think the, obviously a win would, would, would be huge nationally. I remember last, After they beat Cal, San Diego State beat Cal 34-0 last year, you started to see a lot of national college football writers talking about Sean Lewis and the Aztecs, especially their defense. I think that gave them a lot of notoriety that they kind of took with them the rest of the season. And I think potentially going up to Pasadena and winning at the Rose Bowl could be that spark plug again this year nationally for not just San Diego State, but now the Pac-12.
00:38:50
Speaker 2: This is kind of interesting. My last one, Andre, is just on the Pac-12. They go two and six as a league, and you're like, well, that's not very good. But the caveat is Boise goes to number two Oregon and loses by seven. Two years ago, they went to whatever Oregon was ranked, top two or three, and they lose by three, and they eventually find themselves in the college football playoff. Has Boise slash the Pac-12 helped solidify its stake towards the top of the group of six based on what happened this weekend in Eugene?
00:39:19
Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean, I think Bowie state is a national name based on what they've done over the last two decades. Um, and that performance kind of further solidifies it, even though it ended up in a loss. Uh, and I think those, those are the kinds of games that give, uh, credibility to a new conference that's being built and trying to get up into that, you know, power five, if you want to say a level, um, So, yeah, I think Boise gives a lot of respect to the conference nationally, and San Diego State's trying to be right up there with them to be kind of that second team in the mix nationally.
00:39:57
Speaker 2: Rose Bowl, Pasadena, huge opportunity for San Diego State. Week two, 4-15 kick time, pregame coverage. at 2.15 right here on San Diego Sports 760. Hopefully we get one of those beautiful sunsets in Pasadena coming up on Saturday evening. We'll see if San Diego State can find a way this weekend. But, Andre, I always appreciate you taking time for us, all right?
00:40:16
Speaker 8: Thank you, guys.
00:40:17
Speaker 2: All right, great stuff. Andre Hegverdian from the East Village Times. You know the sunsets, Alan, in Pasadena.
00:40:23
Speaker 6: Oh, Rose Bowls.
00:40:24
Speaker 2: Dude, 4.15 start.
00:40:26
Speaker 4: Beautiful.
00:40:26
Speaker 2: 7 p.m.
00:40:27
Speaker 4: Sunset.
00:40:27
Speaker 2: I mean, now just play well.
00:40:29
Speaker 3: Kind of be interesting, right? Just the matchup in general. There's going to be a little bit of, you can make this thing a game in the fourth quarter. It can be onto something. We'll see what happens. Obviously, a lot of time before then.
00:40:40
Speaker 2: I will say this, just doing the cursory glance of UCLA and seeing Sean Lewis yesterday, UCLA is loaded. They bring in their first-year head coach from JMU. They brought a million players over. So many fourth- and fifth-year players. A lot of guys with tons of college snaps. They are an experienced team. They haven't all played together a lot, but they're an experienced team.
00:40:57
Speaker 6: Which is big in college now.
00:40:59
Speaker 2: Which is huge. So it's a serious test, as it should be, on the road against a Big Ten team. We'll get to the wrap on the other side. We'll tell you how to win Motley Crue tickets coming up as well. Also, at 4.30, Dave Jagler, Nat's radio voice, will join us at 4.30 to preview Game 2 of this series. Stay with us on Schaefer & Sliwa, San Diego Sports 760, live on the iHeartRadio app.
