PUMPDABEAT presents RETURN OF THE HUMMINGBIRD
Kevin JZ Prodigy x VJtheDJ
PUMPDABEAT, the longest-running ballroom music collective in history, announces Return of the Hummingbird, a full-length collaboration between Kevin JZ Prodigy and VJtheDJ. It follows “Hummingbird,” a record that first appeared on their 2005 CD I Am Not a Homosexual, passed coast to coast by hand and later added to the Princeton University Music Department curriculum. Hummingbird has held its place in ballroom rotation for more than two decades.
The two began working together in Philadelphia in 1998, with Kevin JZ at the mic and VJtheDJ building beats on Acid Pro 3 and Fruity Loops 3. Their sessions shaped the Philadelphia vogue sound. Their records have been sampled across ballroom, from DJ MikeQ’s “Kunt Rmx” to Azealia Banks, and Kevin JZ’s voice carries onto Beyoncé’s Renaissance. Their sound is part of the lexicon of ballroom beat making.
Return of the Hummingbird reverses the CD era. The album first appeared as one continuous mix, sequenced to be heard from start to finish, and it now arrives as individual singles on SoundCloud, Bandcamp and all major streaming platforms.
