In this installment of the Portus Perspectives series, William shares a lunch meeting that stopped him in his tracks. A founder in the trades business who grew his company from $12.5 million to $50 million in revenue over three years with margin intact the entire way. By any measure, an extraordinary achievement.
But during that lunch, the phone rang. Twice. And both times the founder stepped away to answer project management questions on an active job site.
No COO. No project managers to absorb those calls. Just the founder, still grinding it out at the center of everything, pulling a $50 million business forward through sheer force of will.
William walked him through a simple piece of math that reframes the entire margin conversation.
Take a business doing $10 million in net profit trading at a four times multiple. That is a $40 million business. Now invest $1 million into a COO and a layer of project management. Net profit drops to $9 million. But the business now runs without the founder in every conversation. The multiple moves from four to five. Nine times five is $45 million.
Push that multiple to six and you are at $54 million. A $14 million increase in business value on a $1 million investment, even with lower net income.
Margin matters. But multiple is what determines what you actually walk away with at the closing table. And the fastest way to move your multiple is to build a business that does not need you to answer the phone.
