Dikemas kini:
thwaites glacier is an unusually broad and vast Antarctic glacier located east of Mount Murphy, on the Walgreen Coast of Marie Byrd Land. It was initially sighted by polar researchers in 1940, mapped in 1959–1966 and officially named in 1967, after the late American glaciologist Fredrik T. Thwaites. The glacier flows into Pine Island Bay, part of the Amundsen Sea, at surface speeds which exceed 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) per year near its grounding line.
From the Field: Taking the Temperature Under Antarctica's Most Threatened Glacier
Here’s the audio/video podcast post of my live conversation with a determined duo of longtime broadcast journalists spending two months with intrepid scientists aboard the South Korean icebreaker RV Araon seeking fresh data that could show how fast Antarctica’s most vulnerable ice mass, the Thwa ...
194 Thwaites Glacier CRACKING Apart — Doomsday Glacier Earthquakes SURGE as Ice Sheet COLLAPSES!
29 Jan 2026
Thwaites Glacier in Antarctica is experiencing a surge in seismic activity, indicating a rapid and potentially catastrophic collapse. The glacier is fracturing due to a combination of violent iceberg collisions and underwater erosion from warm ocean currents. This collapse could lead ...

Which is partly why the continent has been the focus of his music (in addition to research and painting). ...
The Glacier That Could Change the World
Brent Minchew is an expert on the glacier that could devastate the world’s coastlines. As a glaciologist at Caltech, he's spent his career tracking Thwaites Glacier, AKA the "Doomsday Glacier." It’s roughly the size of Florida and already losing 50 billion tons of ice a year. Brent joins Hakeem ...
Glacier Rescue
Brent Minchew has a plan that could stop the “Doomsday Glacier” in its tracks, and we don’t even need new technology to do it. The Caltech glaciologist returns to unveil an intervention that could save coasts around the world: refreezing Thwaites Glacier to its own bedrock using passive princip ...

Full Interview: How to Save The “Doomsday Glacier”
Brent Minchew could have a plan to stop Thwaites Glacier, AKA the “Doomsday Glacier”, cold in its tracks. That’s good news because if this one glacier slips into the sea, it could flood coasts across the planet. The Caltech glaciologist covers what makes the “Doomsday Glacier” the single biggest ...
