Dysfunction #4: Avoidance of Accountability
When She Serves Podcast
Host: Brenda Leavenworth
Guest: Kelly Bell
Episode Summary
What happens when accountability is avoided in ministry? In this episode of the When She Serves Podcast, Brenda Leavenworth and Kelly Bell explore the challenge of avoiding accountability and how it can affect relationships, leadership, and the health of a ministry team.
Accountability can be uncomfortable, especially when difficult conversations involve people we care about. Yet healthy ministry requires honesty, humility, and a willingness to address problems rather than ignore them. When accountability is avoided, unresolved issues can grow, trust can erode, and the entire team can be affected.
Brenda and Kelly consider the importance of approaching accountability with both truth and grace, encouraging ministry leaders to cultivate an environment where people can grow, take responsibility, and serve faithfully together.

Key Takeaways
✨ Avoidance doesn't resolve problems. Ignoring difficult issues can allow them to grow and affect the wider team.
✨ Accountability is part of healthy leadership. Taking responsibility helps us grow in maturity and faithfulness.
✨ Truth and grace belong together. Accountability should seek restoration and growth, not shame or condemnation.
✨ Healthy teams communicate honestly. Addressing concerns with humility helps build trust and strengthen relationships.
✨ Leaders must be willing to receive accountability, too. A healthy ministry culture begins when leaders model openness, humility, and a willingness to grow.
A Word for Ministry Leaders
Avoiding a difficult conversation may feel easier in the moment, but lasting health requires a willingness to address problems lovingly and honestly. Biblical accountability isn't about controlling people or assigning blame; it's about helping one another grow in Christlikeness.
As ministry leaders, we can model humility by acknowledging our own shortcomings, listening well, and being willing to speak the truth in love. The goal is not simply to resolve conflict, but to cultivate a culture where people can grow and serve together faithfully.
