00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:02.000
Welcome to WEHM All Access.
00:00:02.319 --> 00:00:07.759
My name is Harry Waring, and welcome to Artist Voices, a chance to go in depth with EHM Artists.
00:00:07.919 --> 00:00:12.240
On this episode, today's guest is Jason Snayer, the mind and voice behind Michigander.
00:00:12.560 --> 00:00:16.399
Their new album, Over Before You Know It, comes out Friday, July 31st.
00:00:16.480 --> 00:00:20.960
And we caught up with Jason to see how the last year has been, and of course, all about the new record.
00:00:21.120 --> 00:00:24.239
We'll talk music, milestones, and what's next for Mitchigander.
00:00:24.399 --> 00:00:25.679
Take a listen to Jason Snayer.
00:00:26.000 --> 00:00:27.760
It's the HM Breakfast Show with Harry.
00:00:27.920 --> 00:00:30.879
Looking forward to a new record coming out from Michigander.
00:00:31.280 --> 00:00:33.840
It's Friday, July 31st, Over Before You Know It.
00:00:33.920 --> 00:00:35.679
And we want to welcome in Jason Stainer.
00:00:36.000 --> 00:00:37.119
Jason, how you been?
00:00:37.520 --> 00:00:38.159
I'm good.
00:00:38.240 --> 00:00:43.600
I'm trying to remember how many times I've been on the show, but I think one day I would like a trophy.
00:00:43.679 --> 00:00:46.000
Uh if if I reached like maybe five.
00:00:46.560 --> 00:00:47.439
I think maybe my fourth.
00:00:47.759 --> 00:00:51.039
Yeah, I think this might be four because we met during the pandemic and you were great.
00:00:51.119 --> 00:00:52.320
And it's fun to watch.
00:00:52.399 --> 00:00:57.759
This was before you even put out your first record, uh, and we were kind of talking about it and teasing it.
00:00:57.920 --> 00:00:59.759
And now you're you're on to number two.
00:00:59.840 --> 00:01:02.320
What's uh how are you feeling heading into the release?
00:01:02.640 --> 00:01:03.600
I'm feeling great.
00:01:03.920 --> 00:01:08.239
I feel uh the most exciting I've ever felt for a record.
00:01:08.400 --> 00:01:13.680
I know you're supposed to say that every time, and I probably have said that every time, but this time I mean it.
00:01:14.000 --> 00:01:17.760
I don't wanted this to sound bad, but was it nice to kind of get the first one out of the way?
00:01:18.239 --> 00:01:20.480
Yeah, so I've put out I'm trying to think here.
00:01:20.560 --> 00:01:26.400
I did four EPs, and then I did my self-titled record, which came out last year.
00:01:26.799 --> 00:01:43.519
Um But yeah, I think in a way it was it's like I was really proud of that record and still am, but it is like it is very congratulatory to myself, I feel like, and very uh it was definitely made for me.
00:01:44.000 --> 00:02:02.560
Um and I feel like I got that out of my system in a way, and this one I thought about the audience a little more, which is you know, that's the job of the artist is to convey a message to an audience, and that's the reason why if it was only for the artist, they would just keep it to themselves.
00:02:02.719 --> 00:02:20.879
So anybody who says this one's just for me, they're they're usually uh they're lying because you you put it out there for people to hear and experience, um, and obviously to make tons of cash, which is the the artist's way nowadays, as you probably know.
00:02:21.039 --> 00:02:22.800
It's just rolling in it, yes.
00:02:23.120 --> 00:02:24.800
Fat wallets all the time.
00:02:25.039 --> 00:02:26.000
Where do I spend this?
00:02:26.479 --> 00:02:27.919
Yeah, I have too much money.
00:02:28.080 --> 00:02:33.199
Um as you can tell by my messy room, I'm just uh living in luxury.
00:02:33.439 --> 00:02:37.840
What story do you did you want to tell with this record that you didn't necessarily do with the first one?
00:02:38.240 --> 00:02:43.199
The first record, I think I built it up so much in my head that this thing was gonna change my life.
00:02:43.280 --> 00:02:48.080
And like this record is going to be the moment that I've been working for for 10 years.
00:02:48.400 --> 00:03:02.080
And then I think when that record didn't like perform the way I was hoping, or you know, didn't like stream as much or whatever, I got really depressed, just to be very honest.
00:03:02.240 --> 00:03:08.560
I mean, we were in Europe and I just remember like a year ago and just being like so down, like why isn't this working?
00:03:08.719 --> 00:03:13.039
Why isn't like why aren't people just like loving this record?
00:03:13.680 --> 00:03:20.000
And and not saying that people not like there's a lot of people who love it, and I'm really grateful for those people for listening to it.
00:03:20.159 --> 00:03:32.000
But I just really hit a really low point, I think, like last summer, and um my manager was like, hey, you should start working on the next one, and I was like so upset by even hearing that.
00:03:32.400 --> 00:03:50.560
And uh I got a deadline, I got it to work on it, and it was like really healing and really pulled me out of a funk, and it kind of helped me like re-evaluate and renegotiate my feelings around this job that I have, and kind of realizing like it's amazing that I get to do what I'm doing.
00:03:50.800 --> 00:03:58.159
Nothing gets better than the feeling of just like pulling up to you know Pier 17 in a car with guitars and going and playing.
00:03:58.400 --> 00:04:00.479
Like, that's the most amazing feeling.
00:04:00.639 --> 00:04:04.560
No matter what the show is, there's something really special about it and magical about it.
00:04:04.800 --> 00:04:22.079
And now going into like this record is like I really want to be um very aware of the journey and where I'm at like right now, talking to you about the record because like this is so cool that you care, that your listeners care, that you're playing the songs, and like all of this, like this is rare.
00:04:22.160 --> 00:04:29.839
I mean such a small percentage of musicians that get the opportunities that I have, and it's like it's just really important for me to like recognize and realize that.
00:04:30.160 --> 00:04:34.319
What was do you remember the first song you wrote for this record after after getting the deadline?
00:04:35.120 --> 00:04:42.800
Uh well it was funny because the song Freaking Out, I think was the first song, but originally that was written for another artist.
00:04:43.199 --> 00:04:51.279
Um, and so I wrote this song, and I thought this other artist was gonna cut the song, and I was like, Man, I really love this song.
00:04:51.439 --> 00:04:53.040
Like, I think you should put it out.
00:04:53.199 --> 00:04:55.600
And she was like, No, I don't I don't think it's for me.
00:04:55.839 --> 00:05:01.600
And I was like, uh I was like, you I was like, this song's a big one, you're gonna love you gotta do this.
00:05:01.839 --> 00:05:06.160
Um, and then she just didn't, and so I was like, you know what?
00:05:06.480 --> 00:05:11.920
That song feels so personal to me, I'm gonna put it out.
00:05:12.160 --> 00:05:20.000
And that was like the first song um that was like kind of destined for the record, and then other ones came along after that.
00:05:20.160 --> 00:05:23.439
But the title track was the last song over Before You Know It.
00:05:23.519 --> 00:05:24.879
Um What inspired that?
00:05:25.839 --> 00:05:27.920
Um I just seen Oasis.
00:05:28.000 --> 00:05:37.040
I was just coming out of this horrible depression, and I was realizing like the best part of life is like the part you're in right now, because that's all you have.
00:05:37.120 --> 00:05:40.319
You don't have tomorrow, you're not guaranteed anything.
00:05:40.639 --> 00:05:50.959
And hearing and like reali and coming to terms with that was just really important for me because I I needed to hear that more than anything.
00:05:51.120 --> 00:05:56.800
It's like I knew what I knew I wanted to call the record over before you know it, but I didn't have that in the song.
00:05:56.959 --> 00:06:04.399
And then I was actually up in Connecticut writing, and I wrote that song up there like right before we finished recording.
00:06:05.680 --> 00:06:08.319
What did you want the uh the production to feel like on this record?
00:06:08.399 --> 00:06:14.160
What were there differences from the first one that you kind of learned from and thought, alright, I want to try this now?
00:06:14.399 --> 00:06:15.839
Hmm, great question.
00:06:16.079 --> 00:06:20.720
Um I really just wanted to not overthink anything.
00:06:20.879 --> 00:06:34.480
On the last record, I had this luxury of like living in the same town where I'm recording, and I've never had that before, and so it was just kind of like I'll just go over to Jeremy's and we'll work on the tunes, and just like they just had they were just overdone.
00:06:34.800 --> 00:06:37.279
Um and too much thought went into every little thing.
00:06:37.439 --> 00:06:55.279
This time it was just like get my best friends in the room, let's just go and not overthink it and trust our instincts and trust what we want to do with it and just pile it all on and then we'll carve it out later, and that's that's what we did.
00:06:55.600 --> 00:07:02.959
I think we recorded the whole thing in like like if it's actual days, maybe 15, 20 days.
00:07:03.120 --> 00:07:03.600
Oh wow.
00:07:03.759 --> 00:07:06.079
Um start to finish.
00:07:06.319 --> 00:07:09.839
Um kind of scattered around, but like quickly.
00:07:10.160 --> 00:07:12.480
Uh last time I think we spent months.
00:07:12.720 --> 00:07:16.560
So this time it's it was just like let's get in, make it happen.
00:07:17.040 --> 00:07:17.759
Did you enjoy that?
00:07:17.920 --> 00:07:20.319
That it was quicker, or did oh, yeah.
00:07:20.399 --> 00:07:25.920
It it was the first I felt like it felt like how it felt when I first started making music.
00:07:26.480 --> 00:07:33.040
Um you always hear that certain producers, I think Dan Hour Back is one of them, where they they'll just they'll get everything done in a couple days and it'll be done.
00:07:33.120 --> 00:07:35.439
And it's the overthinking thing is the enemy.
00:07:35.759 --> 00:07:36.639
It it really is.
00:07:36.800 --> 00:07:39.439
I I mean, yeah, that's that's really true.
00:07:39.600 --> 00:07:40.160
I would agree.
00:07:40.480 --> 00:07:48.480
Is there something different, um, songwriting-wise, that you did for this album and that would that kind of change the way you kind of wrote the lyrics?
00:07:49.279 --> 00:08:03.600
Um I felt like the collaborators I worked with on these songs were really good at interpreting and documenting the weird things I'm saying and trying to get out in the sessions.
00:08:03.839 --> 00:08:14.480
Cause like when you're writing a song, it's oftentimes like you have this you have this idea for how it's supposed to sound and what it should sound like, and you're kind of just making up words and kind of like trying to get them out.
00:08:14.560 --> 00:08:20.000
And I felt like this time my dumb ideas ended up being like the right idea.
00:08:20.319 --> 00:08:34.799
And the writers who worked with me, who were also like who do almost everything with me, they really helped me carve out the right things to say and and narrow it down, which felt really freeing and good.
00:08:35.200 --> 00:08:37.360
Who were those collaborators and the producers on this one?
00:08:37.600 --> 00:08:40.320
Yeah, uh Jeremy Latito and Trent Dabbs.
00:08:40.559 --> 00:08:58.799
Uh Jeremy produces most of my music, and then um I worked with um Colin Pastor and Jake Finch, and they did some stuff with like you know uh Lucy Dakis and Boy Genius and stuff like that, and then a couple other Sam Hollander and my guitar player Jake Lamond.
00:08:58.879 --> 00:09:05.039
We all just kind of you know, different sessions and just really trusted the process this time.
00:09:05.360 --> 00:09:08.879
How do you uh how do you imagine these songs like translating to the to live?
00:09:09.039 --> 00:09:15.440
Uh did you consider that when you're you're writing them, or is that just something it's kind of another way another chance to reinvent them?
00:09:15.759 --> 00:09:21.279
I used to always think about that, but I think the records are forever the shows for like 70 minutes.
00:09:21.440 --> 00:09:25.279
So it's it doesn't really matter what they sound like live.
00:09:25.360 --> 00:09:27.440
I like going to see a show and it's a little different.
00:09:27.759 --> 00:09:34.320
This time specifically is when Michigander first started, the only way you could hear the music was at the shows.
00:09:34.480 --> 00:09:37.679
Like there wasn't much recorded music that I had out back in 2014.
00:09:37.759 --> 00:09:41.759
It was just people would come to the shows and they kind of knew the songs from the shows.
00:09:42.159 --> 00:09:49.600
Um and when we put when I went to like go put this record out, I thought, man, I want to do that again.
00:09:49.679 --> 00:09:55.360
But it's a little bit harder now because you have to like tour and pay people and all these things.
00:09:55.519 --> 00:10:13.200
So we decided when we launched the record and the announcement of it that we would just play the entire record top to bottom in full uh for the first time it's ever been heard, and we got to do that over at the Blue Room at Third Man Records, and it was it was so fun because I was so nervous.
00:10:13.679 --> 00:10:15.600
I was like, hey, welcome to the show.
00:10:15.759 --> 00:10:17.600
No one knew what it was going to be.
00:10:17.840 --> 00:10:26.559
We played the record in full, and you know, no one knows the songs yet, so that feeling it's really a big obstacle.
00:10:26.799 --> 00:10:29.039
But uh, man, it felt awesome.
00:10:29.120 --> 00:10:32.720
And I was like, we've played a few shows here and there, and all these new songs.
00:10:32.799 --> 00:10:37.600
Um I'm just really excited to have be like full-time members of the set that we get to put together.
00:10:37.919 --> 00:10:42.559
When you when you debuted live, was there a song that you were kind of nervous about to play for the first time, Lev?
00:10:42.960 --> 00:10:44.480
All I mean, honestly, all of them.
00:10:44.559 --> 00:10:51.360
Just remembering the lyrics and like all the parts and the tones and switching the pedals and the band and all these things.
00:10:51.440 --> 00:10:55.440
Uh we never rehearsed more than we did for that show.
00:10:55.759 --> 00:10:58.240
So we're set up for success for the fall tour.
00:10:58.559 --> 00:11:05.679
What did you it sounds like you um it was a rough a year ago you mentioned a rough summer, and you kind of had to get right back into it.
00:11:05.759 --> 00:11:08.480
What'd you learn about yourself making this record?
00:11:09.360 --> 00:11:11.440
I that's a great question.
00:11:11.919 --> 00:11:14.080
First person to ask me that question so far.
00:11:14.480 --> 00:11:25.919
Uh I I learned that I am constantly wanting more and the next best thing and ready to go.
00:11:26.559 --> 00:11:28.559
And I often miss where I'm at now.
00:11:28.720 --> 00:11:32.399
I think as I'm getting older, and I'm not like I don't know, I'm 35 or 34.
00:11:32.559 --> 00:11:33.039
I don't even know.
00:11:33.120 --> 00:11:35.600
I'm I'm 30 something, 34.
00:11:36.000 --> 00:11:40.000
Uh and as I'm getting older, it just feels like time is moving much quicker.
00:11:40.639 --> 00:11:44.480
Um I think anybody can relate to that at different levels.
00:11:44.799 --> 00:11:50.399
And I'm realizing it's like, man, this is what I have right now.
00:11:50.879 --> 00:11:54.559
I don't know if I'll be like even around in five years.
00:11:54.799 --> 00:11:57.840
I mean, I'm hoping I will be, I'm assuming I will be.
00:11:58.159 --> 00:12:06.320
But all this like constant thoughts in my head of being like, when are we gonna you know, when are we gonna sell out the next venue?
00:12:06.399 --> 00:12:08.080
And when are we gonna sell out this venue?
00:12:08.240 --> 00:12:11.120
And when are we gonna get a big record deal?
00:12:11.200 --> 00:12:12.720
And when am I gonna all these things?
00:12:12.799 --> 00:12:26.639
It's just constantly in my mind, and it's I'm not enjoying where I'm at now, and so I'm trying to slow down and enjoy the life I have because the journey is the only thing that we got.
00:12:27.440 --> 00:12:30.559
What did you want the fans to to feel when you listen to this record?
00:12:30.639 --> 00:12:36.480
Uh after after going through listening to the first round, this new record, over before you know it, which comes out on the 31st.
00:12:36.639 --> 00:12:39.600
What was kind of the what did you want them to walk away from thinking about?
00:12:40.799 --> 00:12:55.279
I wanted to make a record that it like exhibits the happiness of life and the sadness of life all in a like I didn't want to over I I didn't want any of the songs to be super long.
00:12:55.360 --> 00:12:59.840
I wanted it all to be like this is fast and it's literally over before you know it.
00:12:59.919 --> 00:13:02.879
Like the record starts and it's just like okay, that's it.
00:13:03.600 --> 00:13:37.519
And luckily you can listen to the record again, but like if it's a comparison, if you're drawing parallel lines to life, it shows that it just shows that life is fast and goes by so fast, and it's weird like seeing your parents get old, it's weird like being gone, coming home, and like there's a new restaurant on the corner or you know, your your nieces and nephews are growing up and you start to see a wrinkle on your face or gray hair, and you're just so like that's me.
00:13:37.840 --> 00:13:39.120
That's still me.
00:13:40.080 --> 00:13:40.480
Yeah.
00:13:40.799 --> 00:13:44.080
What are you um uh coming to uh music called Williamsburg too?
00:13:44.159 --> 00:13:52.720
Uh November 11th, so you'll be in the city for that show, which is a great venue, which sadly is, I think, closing, but it's nice they're booking a lot of people uh before the end of the year.
00:13:52.799 --> 00:13:54.159
I actually can't wait to see you live.
00:13:54.240 --> 00:13:54.960
I caught you on the city.
00:13:55.120 --> 00:13:55.919
I've never gotten to play there.
00:13:56.000 --> 00:13:56.639
I'm so excited.
00:13:56.960 --> 00:14:01.039
It's kind of cool, and it's a very nice venue, and I'm it's uh it's kind of interesting.
00:14:01.120 --> 00:14:06.559
I saw you on South Street Seaport, I believe you opened up for uh Crowded House, and that was very cool, Pier 17.
00:14:06.720 --> 00:14:08.240
What's it been like touring around?
00:14:08.399 --> 00:14:11.440
And do you I guess going back home to Michigan?
00:14:11.600 --> 00:14:14.080
Have you been there recently and what's that like to head back from?
00:14:14.159 --> 00:14:15.759
Because I know you're based in Nashville now.
00:14:16.080 --> 00:14:20.159
Yeah, it's always so it's so exciting to go home to Michigan.
00:14:20.480 --> 00:14:22.320
Actually going there on Saturday.
00:14:22.480 --> 00:14:37.840
I don't know when this will air, but uh we're going home this next weekend to um do a little rally with Bernie Sanders and AOC um back home, which I'm really like honored and excited to be a part of.
00:14:38.080 --> 00:14:41.840
Uh and then, you know, we have our Detroit show later this year, too.
00:14:42.080 --> 00:14:47.759
And going home just I mean, I love it so much more now that I'm don't live there.
00:14:48.000 --> 00:14:51.120
And eventually I will move there again, I'm sure.
00:14:51.440 --> 00:14:58.159
But it's been I like feel like we haven't been on the road in a minute, even though we've gotten to do a couple things here and there.
00:14:58.399 --> 00:15:06.399
I'm just really ready to get back in the van with the guys and bum around the country playing songs for whoever wants to hear them.
00:15:06.720 --> 00:15:07.039
Very good.
00:15:07.120 --> 00:15:08.879
Well, we're looking forward to seeing it in the fall.
00:15:08.960 --> 00:15:11.440
It'll come here before as you say it, it's over before you know it.
00:15:11.600 --> 00:15:12.799
The year will be over before you know it.
00:15:12.879 --> 00:15:13.279
It goes fast.
00:15:13.519 --> 00:15:14.000
Summer.
00:15:14.159 --> 00:15:15.679
And uh I know and enjoy it.
00:15:15.840 --> 00:15:16.399
Thank you so much.
00:15:16.480 --> 00:15:19.759
Congratulations on this record because it's not it sounds like it wasn't easy.
00:15:19.840 --> 00:15:22.720
It wasn't necessarily something you wanted to do right away.
00:15:22.960 --> 00:15:23.919
And a way you did.
00:15:24.240 --> 00:15:26.000
Um this is kind of cool.
00:15:26.080 --> 00:15:30.159
Are you already thinking about are you uh obligated for that third one now?
00:15:30.240 --> 00:15:30.399
No.
00:15:30.720 --> 00:15:31.919
Oh yeah, I'm already thinking about it.
00:15:32.000 --> 00:15:34.480
I'm already I was really working on it today.
00:15:34.559 --> 00:15:39.440
So out of curiosity, how did you know um because I'd imagine there's some songs that didn't make the cuts.
00:15:39.600 --> 00:15:41.200
Is that a tough choice?
00:15:42.000 --> 00:15:45.759
You know, I for this record, I think there's only like two that didn't make it.
00:15:46.320 --> 00:15:50.960
For the last record, I think I wrote 40, 50 songs, narrowed it down to twelve.
00:15:51.840 --> 00:15:59.039
I'm just becoming I'm realizing I have the best success working with people who I'm I just really enjoy being around.
00:15:59.279 --> 00:16:06.799
And I think in the future, and like this record proves it, is that that's the way to that's the way to keep on keeping on.
00:16:07.120 --> 00:16:12.320
Well, enjoy going home this weekend, at least to Michigan, and looking forward to hearing the rest of the record.
00:16:12.480 --> 00:16:15.519
Over before you know it, Michigan or Jason Singer, thank you so much for coming on.
00:16:15.600 --> 00:16:16.240
I appreciate it.
00:16:16.480 --> 00:16:17.200
Thanks, dude.
