00:00:10
Speaker 1: Hey there, everybody, and welcome to Amy and TJ.
00:00:13
Speaker 2: It is Sunday, October 25th, and we are counting down our favorite recent thriller horror movies. That is the genre of today, and so we have reached our number two. In our series of three, and it is with one of our absolute favorite horror movie actresses, who honestly we haven't seen recently. This is a movie that was released in 2021, and it's got Rebecca Hall. She is a gift to all movies, but especially horror movies.
00:00:49
Speaker 3: I'm trying to think. I first discovered her in, I think it was a miniseries on HBO years and years and years ago. And she was just delightful. She is a gem of an actress, babe. She is, I'm telling, she's top five for me.
00:01:04
Speaker 2: Yes.
00:01:05
Speaker 3: She is a top five actress for me that I love to watch.
00:01:09
Speaker 1: Anything Rebecca Hall is in, we will watch.
00:01:12
Speaker 2: And the number two recommendation for our thriller horror movie to get you into the Halloween spirit as we count down to Halloween is The Night House. This is a haunting movie and it has a lot of depth and it's more than just a horror movie, but you would expect nothing less from Rebecca Hall. I do think she elevates the Every script she is a part of because it just becomes something more than just a means to an end. It's an experience when you watch Rebecca Hall do her thing.
00:01:41
Speaker 3: Does she have? I don't think of her necessarily. I'm trying to think of her other ones, her other horror movies. I know her so well from the. obviously the Godzilla movies.
00:01:51
Speaker 2: Yes, Godzilla versus Kong.
00:01:53
Speaker 3: I'm trying to think of the one. Is she in a horror movie lane? Is she Mika Monroe? Is she in that lane?
00:02:00
Speaker 1: She's not in that lane, but she does mysteries.
00:02:03
Speaker 2: One of the ones that jumps out to me is The Gift with Jason Bateman.
00:02:07
Speaker 1: She's great in that movie. Is that a horror movie, The Gift? I think it kind of is.
00:02:12
Speaker 3: It's a thriller, horror.
00:02:14
Speaker 2: She's more of like The Awakening is another horror thriller movie that's really, really great.
00:02:20
Speaker 1: But she was in The Town. She was in Vicky Cristina Barcelona, which I think really put her.
00:02:26
Speaker 2: On the map.
00:02:26
Speaker 3: Don't know that one.
00:02:27
Speaker 1: That was like an Oscar-worthy movie.
00:02:28
Speaker 2: So this is someone who, yes, is just one of those brilliant actresses who can do just about any genre.
00:02:36
Speaker 1: But she has been in some creepy movies. And she's done them very well.
00:02:40
Speaker 3: That's a good way to put it. Creepy stuff. She does the creepy stuff.
00:02:42
Speaker 2: When I think of her, I think of haunting. It's not a fun movie. She's not in a horror comedy. She's not a comedic actress. She is going to bring depth to everything she does.
00:02:54
Speaker 3: I'm trying to think of even a scene I've seen her in that was funny.
00:02:58
Speaker 1: Where she's smiling?
00:02:58
Speaker 3: In any of these movies. But she has a softness to her, but a grit to her. She doesn't seem like, to me, babe, a final girl.
00:03:12
Speaker 2: No.
00:03:13
Speaker 3: She wouldn't even let a killer get that far.
00:03:16
Speaker 1: She'd out-think them.
00:03:17
Speaker 2: Right.
00:03:17
Speaker 3: It'd be over halfway through the movie. She's awesome. So this is supposed to be a review. Our number two recommendation is Rebecca Hall.
00:03:25
Speaker 2: Yes.
00:03:26
Speaker 1: We love Rebecca Hall.
00:03:27
Speaker 2: But this is actually the perfect horror movie for her to be in because it requires her to figure something out.
00:03:32
Speaker 1: She's doing.
00:03:33
Speaker 2: basically a human detective work because there's this other world, this unexplained thing that's happening and it all follows the death of her husband. And so, yes, there's creepiness, there's horror, there's what the hell is going on on the.
00:03:47
Speaker 1: Other side of the lake.
00:03:48
Speaker 2: And she takes us along with her in this deepening mystery that has a lot of disturbing discoveries.
00:03:57
Speaker 1: Let's just put it like this. Let me go ahead.
00:03:59
Speaker 2: And read the synopsis because they do it better than I do. reeling from the unexpected death of her husband, Beth, who's played by Rebecca Hall, is left alone in the lakeside home he built for her. But she tries as best she can to keep it together, but then the nightmares come, disturbing visions of a presence in the house calling to her, beckoning her with a ghostly allure against the advice of her friends. She begins digging into her husband's belongings, yearning for answers, and what she finds are secrets both strange and disturbing, a mystery. she is determined to unravel. And so, yeah, this takes you on a journey with her. So you have to like Rebecca Hall to like this movie, period. And it runs an hour 50, so a little longer than we usually prefer, but it's rated R. And look, the critics loved it. 88% they gave this movie.
00:04:55
Speaker 1: It is, it's chilling, it's haunting. Again, it's atmospheric. I feel like today, Sunday, we picked thriller movies and... It's less about the.
00:05:05
Speaker 2: I mean, there is action in this, but it's more about where you go.
00:05:09
Speaker 1: You go to a different place.
00:05:12
Speaker 2: There's a haunting place you get to in each of these movies, and this one in particular.
00:05:18
Speaker 3: Is that what the thrillers require? Because to your point now, in our number one that's going to be next in our feed... It's a haunted house story. It's almost a haunted room story. It's a specific thing. So maybe, I didn't realize, but that's a good point to make here. The setting adds to the horror in all these movies, and they're not necessarily scary settings. Actually, it works because there's so many settings you're used to being in, and they turn something that's supposed to be familiar and normal into something that's terrifying.
00:05:50
Speaker 2: Like a lake house, a lake house that your architect husband built for you. That should just be something that's beautiful and something to remember him by.
00:05:58
Speaker 3: Any lake house is scary to me at night. A lake house? Yes. What's coming out of the water at night? I can't see out there.
00:06:04
Speaker 1: This isn't even about the water.
00:06:05
Speaker 2: This is about another house, which is so creepy about it.
00:06:08
Speaker 1: You know what this one kind of reminds me of? A modern day.
00:06:11
Speaker 2: If you liked What Lies Beneath, and that was actually a contender for our... Because we're trying to find movies that you don't necessarily know, that weren't like the big box office successes, but are fun movies that you can stream if you like a particular sub-genre of horror. And so if you liked What Lies Beneath with Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer.
00:06:33
Speaker 3: Ugh.
00:06:34
Speaker 1: You will love this movie.
00:06:36
Speaker 2: It has some of the same elements to it, except for you've got a dead husband in this to start off with.
00:06:42
Speaker 3: How many movies has Harrison Ford been in that he plays the bad guy?
00:06:50
Speaker 1: Not many. He's almost always the good guy.
00:06:52
Speaker 3: He's the hero. Come on, help me here. Name another one. Harrison Ford was the bad guy in what other movies?
00:06:58
Speaker 2: Well, you think he might be. What's the one where it's the one-handed man did it, the fugitive? He's the fugitive.
00:07:05
Speaker 3: Oh, he was such a hero.
00:07:06
Speaker 1: But he's a hero.
00:07:07
Speaker 3: Yes.
00:07:07
Speaker 2: But you think, like, he's made out to be the bad guy, but wrongly so.
00:07:12
Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. From the jump, he was your favorite.
00:07:14
Speaker 2: He was.
00:07:15
Speaker 3: excellent in that movie. I know Indiana Jones. I know all that stuff.
00:07:19
Speaker 1: What Lies Beneath might be the only one.
00:07:20
Speaker 3: There's got to be another one. I can't think of anything Harrison Ford has done. We're missing something.
00:07:24
Speaker 2: He's the heroic guy. It'd be like Tom Cruise being the bad guy. There are certain actors you just don't expect.
00:07:32
Speaker 3: Collateral.
00:07:33
Speaker 2: Okay, so they each have one and we've got to watch that because that was one that came up when we were doing movie reviews.
00:07:38
Speaker 3: That we should watch. Was he a good guy in Digger? Yes, he was. He was a good guy in Digger. Yes. Well-intentioned, yes. We'll leave that.
00:07:45
Speaker 1: Okay, but long story short.
00:07:48
Speaker 3: We got off on the side. We've recommended everything but this movie.
00:07:51
Speaker 1: No, we love The Night House.
00:07:52
Speaker 2: But no, but just for anyone who hasn't seen What Lies Beneath, please, please, please check that out.
00:07:57
Speaker 1: It goes in this genre.
00:07:58
Speaker 3: So good.
00:07:59
Speaker 1: And if you like that movie, you will love this one, The Night House. They're both lake houses. They have similar settings.
00:08:07
Speaker 2: But the critics' consensus, again, 88% from the critics, led by Rebecca Hall's gripping central performance, The Night House offers atmospheric horror that engages intellectually as well as emotionally. I think that's such a good way to put it. And I picked out a couple of the reviews that I thought really... will get you excited about.
00:08:29
Speaker 3: Watching this movie. Did you say the audience score or are you holding it?
00:08:31
Speaker 1: I haven't said the audience score yet.
00:08:33
Speaker 3: Yes.
00:08:34
Speaker 2: The critics reviews, if monsters or aliens or raging killers are what scare you, this may not be your thing. But if death and things that go bump in the night make your hackles rise, this is right up your alley.
00:08:49
Speaker 1: That is well put.
00:08:51
Speaker 3: You don't watch this alone. You need a blanket.
00:08:54
Speaker 2: I actually did watch it alone the first time.
00:08:55
Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't recommend it. You need a blanket. and you need a warm body next to you.
00:09:00
Speaker 1: That is advisable. Yeah. Yes, 100%.
00:09:04
Speaker 2: And look, the reviews on this one, the other one, a creepy, tension-filled, dark dissent. that gets darker and darker the more you dive into the story. Rebecca Hall gives one of her best performances ever, and David Bruckner directs the hell out of this. So yes, David Bruckner, his name is very familiar, but he directed this film and was given a lot of kudos for how it feels, because he really does set the tone, and he's done a lot of horror movies. We're talking The Ritual, which we love, 2017's, hellraiser 2022 we haven't watched vhs 85 have we 2023 that one's actually pretty well reviewed as well.
00:09:49
Speaker 3: It's 85 there's a wait what else has he done wait because there was another.
00:09:53
Speaker 2: There was there's another one of those another vhs he did that one too vhs and then he did vhs 94 he did VHS 95.
00:10:01
Speaker 1: So he's done all of those. No one gets out alive.
00:10:04
Speaker 2: He has done a ton of horror movies that have been the blob.
00:10:10
Speaker 3: No one gets out alive is another good recommendation.
00:10:12
Speaker 1: Yes, that is a great one.
00:10:14
Speaker 2: But this is a director who knows how to do horror.
00:10:19
Speaker 1: And so you see it in this movie.
00:10:22
Speaker 2: I actually would describe this as an elevated horror thriller movie with some of the best acting and best directing you're going to find.
00:10:31
Speaker 3: It turns some people off, Rose, but I embrace it. When there is a movie that depends on one actor to pull it off, If you get the right actor, that is some special stuff to watch. And Rebecca Hall does that. And the other one I think about is, what's his name? Austin Abrams.
00:10:52
Speaker 2: Yes.
00:10:53
Speaker 3: He is the one that carries the new Resident Evil. He is the one in Whale Fall, the one where the guy gets swallowed by a whale. Rob, it takes a lot. He's sitting in a whale's stomach for a whole movie and has to carry you along. Or the Resident Evil, it was just kind of him. This is one of those things. If you get the right actor, and she does, it is so impressive.
00:11:15
Speaker 1: Rebecca Hall.
00:11:15
Speaker 3: One person you can stare at and carry you through a whole movie like that. That is talent. That is special. And she is a gem, baby. This is great stuff.
00:11:24
Speaker 1: Yeah, it's almost like she's Shakespearean. She's awesome. She's so well-trained.
00:11:29
Speaker 2: And so everything she does turns to gold. So yes, 88% from Rotten Tomatoes, from.
00:11:33
Speaker 1: The critics, 69% from the audience.
00:11:36
Speaker 2: When we come back, we're going to tell you what the audience, they actually had a consensus in some of the audience reviews, where you can watch this and why it's a guaranteed Halloween hit.
00:11:56
Speaker 1: Welcome back, everyone, to Amy and TJ.
00:11:59
Speaker 2: We are on our thriller horror subgenre on this Sunday as.
00:12:03
Speaker 1: We count down to Halloween. And number two on our list is The Night House.
00:12:08
Speaker 2: The audience score was 69% which is still pretty damn good and this was the consensus and this is maybe you this look you should not watch this late at night if you're a little tired because you really do need to pay attention to this and it is a dark like visually it's dark so you need to probably watch it at night but just make sure it's earlier in the night when you have some energy to you maybe we're the only ones who get up as early as we do and have a tough time staying up but The audience consensus is this. The story's a bit slow and confusing, right up to an ending that will leave some disappointed.
00:12:41
Speaker 1: That makes you not want to watch it, so please, maybe I shouldn't have read this.
00:12:44
Speaker 3: But Rebecca Hall is terrific.
00:12:47
Speaker 2: And there are some truly tense and scary moments. So that was like the consensus from the audience. But I plucked out some really, I thought, good reviews that I would absolutely agree with.
00:13:00
Speaker 1: One writes, haunting.
00:13:02
Speaker 2: Deeply unnerving and masterfully atmospheric, The Night House is.
00:13:07
Speaker 1: A modern horror gem.
00:13:10
Speaker 2: Anchored by a fierce, electrifying performance from Rebecca Hall, it builds an unforgettable tension that lingers long after the final frame, a must-watch for all horror fans. I would agree completely on that one.
00:13:26
Speaker 3: Robes, this is... I hope folks have followed along and we have made horror movie fans out of what we've done this month. Rob, this is a very good example of someone who could say they hate horror movies because the idea of Jason and Freddy chasing people around and stabbing, ain't no way. Who could watch that? This is a different movie, and it's an elevated movie. And Rob, even if you like Sinners or Weapons, those things got Oscar. I mean, woman won an Oscar for acting in Weapons. Right?
00:14:00
Speaker 2: It's just.
00:14:02
Speaker 1: We're hoping Obsession does this year.
00:14:04
Speaker 3: It will. That movie's going to do gangbusters. I'm predicting now. Digger as well.
00:14:08
Speaker 2: Yes.
00:14:09
Speaker 3: I agree. And this new Elizabeth Holmes. What's it called? Everything You Can See. Oh, yeah. I can't remember.
00:14:15
Speaker 1: We've got to watch that.
00:14:16
Speaker 3: Yeah, that thing is going to. Anyway, this is just one of those, babe, where you watch this and go, oh, I am a horror movie fan because I like thrillers. I like good acting. I like award-winning actors. It's something there for everybody. We are obviously horror movie freaks.
00:14:32
Speaker 1: We like them all.
00:14:33
Speaker 3: We like it all, but it's so cool. Last year might have been the best year we've had in our adult lives for horror movies because everybody was giving them Oscar love and like, good to have y'all.
00:14:42
Speaker 2: Thanks.
00:14:43
Speaker 3: Come on board. We've been hooting and hollering about so many Oscar movies. And look, a lot of performances don't get love from the Academy Awards. because they're horror movies. Correct.
00:14:52
Speaker 1: They somehow seem like, it's like rom-coms.
00:14:54
Speaker 2: It's like, okay, your formulaic movies are, you know, we get it, we understand, everybody dies, there's a girl who survives in the end.
00:15:03
Speaker 1: This is not Oscar-worthy.
00:15:05
Speaker 2: Actually, I have loved the storytelling and the acting and the directing and just the emphasis that has been placed on the genre and recognizing that there are so many different types of horror and there is something for everybody.
00:15:18
Speaker 3: Who won Best Supporting Actor? Best Supporting Actor last year. And there's a reason I'm asking. Best Supporting Actor for 2025 went to whom? Ah, Kieran Culkin for what was the movie? A Real Pain, right?
00:15:33
Speaker 2: Yes.
00:15:34
Speaker 3: But I say that for this reason. Two of the four major categories, acting, went to people in horror movies. That's amazing. Aren't we talking about Michael B?
00:15:47
Speaker 2: Yep.
00:15:48
Speaker 3: And then homegirl for weapons. And do I have that right from last year?
00:15:51
Speaker 1: Yes, I think you are correct.
00:15:53
Speaker 3: Two of the four major acting categories went to people who were in horror movies. Is that not correct? Yes.
00:15:59
Speaker 2: And it was Ed Harris's wife.
00:16:01
Speaker 1: Her name's Amy.
00:16:02
Speaker 2: I can't think of her name, but she was so good in weapons.
00:16:05
Speaker 1: It was unbelievable, correct? That was like, she.
00:16:08
Speaker 3: Was so good. The witch thing, crazy thing.
00:16:11
Speaker 1: The older woman who was like manipulating everybody. It was so good.
00:16:16
Speaker 3: So to our point, Robes, that is really cool. To see. Amy Madigan.
00:16:21
Speaker 1: Amy Madigan, yes.
00:16:22
Speaker 3: And Michael B. Jordan were in horror movies. Two of the four acting awards went to people who were in horror movies.
00:16:29
Speaker 1: Exactly.
00:16:30
Speaker 3: We had a big year last year. We did. And you know what?
00:16:33
Speaker 2: By the way, you can watch this on Prime Video on Fandango.
00:16:37
Speaker 1: And I want to leave you with this last review.
00:16:40
Speaker 2: This was by an audience member, but I just thought this was so perfect. Watch this movie several times, and I can honestly say that it is one of my favorite horror films. It's incredibly scary, with an atmosphere filled with grief, despair, and the constant feeling of danger looming. It's also scary as hell because it plays with your primal fears. Is there something or someone invisible in your house at night?
00:17:04
Speaker 1: Watch this movie alone at night, and you're in for a ride. Kind of exactly what you were just saying, babe. But this film is.
00:17:11
Speaker 2: Not a normal haunted house flick. It stands out because it raises a major question. Is Beth really haunted by a ghostly presence, or... Is it all in her head?
00:17:21
Speaker 1: Perhaps a mixture of mental illness, alcohol, unfathomable grief. Watch this movie at least.
00:17:26
Speaker 2: Twice and then ask yourself that question. And let's not forget Rebecca Hall. She is the absolute center of this movie and she is magnificent. She portrays her character, Beth, as a very tough but also incredibly vulnerable woman who has to question everything, even her own sanity.
00:17:43
Speaker 1: An incredible performance, an incredible movie, in my opinion.
00:17:46
Speaker 2: Period.
00:17:47
Speaker 3: Boom.
00:17:48
Speaker 1: Everybody. Go watch this. It is haunting.
00:17:51
Speaker 2: It is well acted, well directed. And I think actually atmospherically of all the movies, this will truly get you in the Halloween spirit.
00:18:00
Speaker 3: Rebecca Hall, I don't know what else to say. She is a gem, baby. She is just, she's one of, we should put a list together of our top five favorite actresses.
00:18:08
Speaker 1: She is absolutely in there. She's on that list.
00:18:12
Speaker 3: She is incredible in this movie and it's called Parade's End is the Recommendation. I don't know if HBO still has it up. You know who she plays opposite in that? Benedict Cumberbatch.
00:18:25
Speaker 1: Oh, I love him.
00:18:26
Speaker 3: Ropes. Those two did a five-part miniseries on HBO called Parade's End. What's it about? It's like it's World War II. Oh, that's what I've never seen. He was off to war. She was back at home. There was some love triangle.
00:18:37
Speaker 1: That doesn't even sound like something you would watch.
00:18:39
Speaker 3: I don't know how I fell into it. And Rose, this was before Benedict Cumberbatch was Benedict Cumberbatch.
00:18:44
Speaker 2: That's funny.
00:18:44
Speaker 3: It was before Rebecca Hall was Rebecca Hall. I just, I don't know how I got into this one episode. Holy shit, this is great. And then they become these megastars that they are now. Parade's End is my other recommendation.
00:18:57
Speaker 1: I've never even heard of that.
00:18:59
Speaker 3: Parade's End. end it's got to be at least 15 years old we love.
00:19:02
Speaker 2: A couple recommendations wrapped in a recommendation that works perfectly all right the night house everybody go see it or go watch it stream it and when we come back we will have our number one recommendation that'll be later today in our feed so please please please keep your eye out for that.
00:19:19
Speaker 3: It's a really it's a damn good one i'm really excited about we're
00:19:22
Speaker 2: Excited about it all right and with that everyone thanks for listening i'm amy robach alongside tj holmes we will talk soon
