RPP 1 Consistency

WEBVTT
00:00:00.050 --> 00:00:03.020
Okay, so this is take two of consistency.
00:00:03.560 --> 00:00:06.019
This is the Ruby Peak Performance Podcast.
00:00:06.620 --> 00:00:07.099
Yes.
00:00:07.160 --> 00:00:09.650
We are consistently recording about consistency,
00:00:11.539 --> 00:00:14.240
as in Well, we haven't been consistent at all.
00:00:14.240 --> 00:00:15.410
That's funny that you say that.
00:00:15.470 --> 00:00:16.940
Well, it's the second podcast.
00:00:16.940 --> 00:00:17.660
So true
00:00:17.660 --> 00:00:18.050
that Yeah.
00:00:18.559 --> 00:00:18.980
Yeah.
00:00:19.804 --> 00:00:24.035
I'm sure that's gonna make its way back around, like spilling outside of all things, Jim.
00:00:24.035 --> 00:00:34.155
But, the idea behind this channel for this podcast is to be able to talk about all the things that we wanna bring up in class, but really just don't have the time to.
00:00:34.575 --> 00:00:36.375
Dive into too deeply.
00:00:36.945 --> 00:00:37.274
Yeah.
00:00:37.484 --> 00:00:49.784
We've got 35 years of coaching experience and lots we would like to share with people, but sometimes cramming it into an hour when we're trying to get you moving and moving well and having an effective workout.
00:00:49.784 --> 00:00:52.545
Sometimes we don't get those education opportunities, so Totally.
00:00:53.234 --> 00:00:55.710
It's, um, you know, one thing to have.
00:00:57.670 --> 00:01:08.239
Workshops and things like that, but then that's just extra, extra time for everybody and, uh, this is a way for us to kind of get some extra stuff out to you all that you can listen to at your leisure.
00:01:08.329 --> 00:01:08.840
Totally.
00:01:09.980 --> 00:01:11.030
So consistency.
00:01:11.180 --> 00:01:13.579
The reason that we decided to start with this is it's.
00:01:14.180 --> 00:01:22.760
Something that, as coaches in our meetings, we talk about all the time, what are the challenges that we're bumping up against and what are ways to alleviate that?
00:01:22.760 --> 00:01:27.709
And consistency tends to be a concept that we just come back to Always and always.
00:01:27.920 --> 00:01:28.099
Yes.
00:01:28.950 --> 00:01:38.609
I think what initially sparked this was, uh, that we live in Wallowa County and there's tons of summer activities that everyone's trying to cram in.
00:01:39.870 --> 00:01:40.980
Like extreme.
00:01:40.980 --> 00:01:45.420
I think it's like this in a lot of parts of the world, but here the winters are extreme.
00:01:46.829 --> 00:01:51.120
Uh, the winters are, you know, kind of long and cold and uh, it's limiting.
00:01:51.180 --> 00:01:54.719
And half of our clients have kids and that kind of thing.
00:01:54.719 --> 00:01:58.469
And so all winter long everything's dictated for them.
00:01:58.469 --> 00:02:00.750
So as soon as they get some freedom in the summer, it's like.
00:02:01.739 --> 00:02:10.620
Cram everything you possibly can in, we've been trying to have a customer appreciation or you know, client appreciation anniversary party planned.
00:02:10.620 --> 00:02:12.419
We've moved the date four times.
00:02:13.259 --> 00:02:14.189
That's'cause it's conflicting.
00:02:14.189 --> 00:02:14.669
Exactly.
00:02:14.669 --> 00:02:15.360
With other things.
00:02:15.360 --> 00:02:15.925
There's conflicting like in other.
00:02:16.875 --> 00:02:19.965
Longer standing major events that happen here in the county.
00:02:20.025 --> 00:02:20.205
Yeah.
00:02:20.205 --> 00:02:21.555
Which is almost every weekend.
00:02:21.560 --> 00:02:21.729
Yeah.
00:02:21.729 --> 00:02:23.354
So, yeah, it's kind of, well, it's funny, I was
00:02:23.354 --> 00:02:30.794
actually talking to somebody about this after class about how their next four weekends are booked with seemingly fun things.
00:02:30.794 --> 00:02:30.884
Mm-hmm.
00:02:31.155 --> 00:02:38.354
But they're kind of dreading it in the way that you and I have felt about our travel plans this summer, that there's just too much of it.
00:02:38.360 --> 00:02:38.530
Yeah.
00:02:38.745 --> 00:02:44.770
And so the prepping for it and the aftermath of it is.
00:02:45.689 --> 00:02:48.509
Daunting enough that it's kind of hard to look forward to.
00:02:48.509 --> 00:02:48.599
Mm-hmm.
00:02:48.900 --> 00:02:52.710
Things that are supposed to be a good time or vacation or time off or whatever.
00:02:52.800 --> 00:02:53.009
Yeah.
00:02:53.504 --> 00:02:58.004
Well, there's some of us too that like to have just nothing on the schedule once in a while.
00:02:58.155 --> 00:03:04.694
So you're not just dictating everything by your past self, just like ordering you around like a puppet.
00:03:04.724 --> 00:03:08.775
'cause it's, you're like, I made these decisions weeks ago and now I'm beholden to them.
00:03:08.775 --> 00:03:09.284
And so Is that
00:03:09.284 --> 00:03:10.094
how you feel about it?
00:03:10.094 --> 00:03:10.365
Yeah.
00:03:10.365 --> 00:03:16.094
Sometimes I feel like, geez, I just wanna be like free to say, Nope, thanks, I'm gonna not do anything.
00:03:16.185 --> 00:03:19.664
Well, let me tell you, you and I have been together for like eight years now.
00:03:19.939 --> 00:03:26.870
I think I'm finally that person, like I think I've become busy enough to really appreciate nothing.
00:03:27.050 --> 00:03:27.889
Just having nothing.
00:03:28.069 --> 00:03:28.460
Yeah.
00:03:28.490 --> 00:03:28.669
Yeah.
00:03:29.550 --> 00:03:46.030
But whatever regarding consistency, we've come to find that, um, where we live is very unique to anywhere else that we've been coaches because of the really extreme changes in activity from the fall and winter months into spring and summer.
00:03:46.330 --> 00:03:47.469
And so what.
00:03:47.659 --> 00:04:00.229
That has resulted for us is that we see seasonal athletes or seasonal members who are here for part of the year and then have a really big stretch off, and when they come back, it's.
00:04:00.879 --> 00:04:02.590
Kind of a tough go, right?
00:04:02.590 --> 00:04:16.029
It's almost like starting from scratch, especially if you're newer to exercise, it can really be enough of a down slide or a backslide, I should say, that it can almost feel like you're starting as a beginner again.
00:04:16.089 --> 00:04:16.180
Mm-hmm.
00:04:16.509 --> 00:04:17.350
And wonderfully.
00:04:17.350 --> 00:04:18.399
That will not be the case.
00:04:18.675 --> 00:04:21.435
Forever, but it's not without backslide.
00:04:21.644 --> 00:04:32.264
You and I have had experiences recently, you know, as recent as COVID or your recent injuries and my recent injuries, where we've experienced the backslide too.
00:04:32.295 --> 00:04:35.204
And you and I have decades of training under our belt.
00:04:35.204 --> 00:04:37.454
Like we are no exception, even though we've.
00:04:38.019 --> 00:04:39.189
Put in a lot of time.
00:04:39.279 --> 00:04:39.430
Mm-hmm.
00:04:40.389 --> 00:04:40.750
Yeah.
00:04:40.810 --> 00:04:47.470
So there's things about consistency that we wanted to talk about on this podcast that I think are not all that obvious.
00:04:47.519 --> 00:04:55.709
I think that sometimes, well, first of all, we're gonna talk a little bit about what it takes to be consistent, because sometimes it's not what you think.
00:04:56.129 --> 00:05:00.050
And and then some of the ramifications of not being consistent because it's.
00:05:00.464 --> 00:05:04.154
It's more than just not quite getting the results that you want.
00:05:04.394 --> 00:05:05.444
There's more to it than that.
00:05:05.444 --> 00:05:07.995
So we just wanted to share a few of those points.
00:05:08.295 --> 00:05:08.625
Totally.
00:05:08.714 --> 00:05:09.915
Do you wanna just start right there?
00:05:09.915 --> 00:05:13.394
That most potent one that is already kind of.
00:05:14.209 --> 00:05:14.839
Showing itself.
00:05:14.839 --> 00:05:15.889
And the last thing that you said?
00:05:16.310 --> 00:05:16.970
Uh, yeah.
00:05:16.970 --> 00:05:30.110
So, uh, in over 20 years of coaching, now I've only had two members that got a mild case of what's called rhabdomyolysis.
00:05:30.324 --> 00:05:32.904
And sometimes it's associated with compartment syndrome.
00:05:32.904 --> 00:05:40.144
They're similar situations, but basically what happens is you work a muscle hard enough with a lot of volume.
00:05:40.334 --> 00:05:43.605
There are also things like kidney failure that can cause this or.
00:05:44.074 --> 00:05:58.625
Other, you know, like diseases, but exercise induced lysis is just an extreme overuse injury where the muscle protein breaks down so much that your kidneys can't process the proteins that are breaking down and entering your bloodstream.
00:05:58.954 --> 00:06:01.954
And so then you end up with like localized swelling.
00:06:02.639 --> 00:06:12.730
That can sometimes turn your urine brown because you're like peeing out protein and if it backs up your kidneys enough, this is like a life-threatening situation.
00:06:12.730 --> 00:06:14.860
You go to the hospital and it's, it's not good.
00:06:15.310 --> 00:06:19.720
And even in a mild case, you can cause a lot of damage, of course, to that muscle.
00:06:19.720 --> 00:06:22.480
So it's uh, it's not quite like a muscle strain.
00:06:22.480 --> 00:06:28.250
It's more like the entire muscle is sort of broken down and loses its integrity.
00:06:28.985 --> 00:06:31.834
So it can result in some long-term issues.
00:06:31.925 --> 00:06:36.694
Luckily, in the two cases that I've been experienced to, that was not the case.
00:06:36.694 --> 00:06:41.035
Both people made a full recovery but it was painful and.
00:06:42.069 --> 00:06:45.160
Discouraging and scary and it lasted for weeks.
00:06:45.220 --> 00:06:46.120
And so I'm sure
00:06:46.120 --> 00:06:47.889
imagine scary for you as the coach.
00:06:47.920 --> 00:06:48.430
Uh, yeah.
00:06:48.490 --> 00:06:48.730
Yeah.
00:06:48.730 --> 00:06:51.850
I don't ever wanna see anybody injured, let, let alone with something like that.
00:06:51.850 --> 00:06:57.759
And what had happened to explain the situation and how it relates to consistency is that these were both.
00:06:58.870 --> 00:07:01.629
The higher performing athletes in our gym.
00:07:01.629 --> 00:07:08.290
So people who were consistent coming in three back then, sometimes it was 3, 4, 5 times a week.
00:07:08.290 --> 00:07:08.470
Like
00:07:08.470 --> 00:07:09.279
six pack abs.
00:07:09.279 --> 00:07:09.519
Yeah.
00:07:09.519 --> 00:07:10.420
Five times a week.
00:07:10.420 --> 00:07:12.129
Six, six pack abs.
00:07:12.459 --> 00:07:12.910
Um.
00:07:13.810 --> 00:07:22.089
And, you know, one of the particular, one person I'm thinking of, uh, she was a gal who she kind of came in to like lose mommy fat.
00:07:22.089 --> 00:07:25.899
You know, she had a baby about a year before she started training.
00:07:25.949 --> 00:07:27.449
She was always just a runner.
00:07:27.930 --> 00:07:35.009
And then when I exposed her to mixed modality training, like CrossFit, she just kind of got addicted to it and was really.
00:07:35.444 --> 00:07:35.894
Awesome.
00:07:35.894 --> 00:07:44.625
Like she, she had this like gradual ramp up, but within two years she was like one of the fittest people in the gym and everybody's like, oh, I wanna be like Rachel.
00:07:44.625 --> 00:07:46.064
'cause she was just like, amazing.
00:07:46.064 --> 00:07:46.725
And go, Rachel.
00:07:46.725 --> 00:07:46.995
Yeah.
00:07:46.995 --> 00:07:50.745
Six pack and knocking out like dozens of pull-ups.
00:07:50.745 --> 00:07:52.995
And she couldn't do one pull-up when she first started, you know?
00:07:52.995 --> 00:07:54.764
And she just, everybody just loved.
00:07:55.060 --> 00:07:57.910
Her and her work ethic and her abilities.
00:07:57.939 --> 00:07:59.079
It was just really fun to watch.
00:07:59.529 --> 00:08:12.339
Well, she had some work stuff that life changes and uh, had been very sporadic for a little while, and then coming in off of a two or three week gap and that's all it took was two or three weeks.
00:08:12.339 --> 00:08:12.430
Wow.
00:08:12.430 --> 00:08:17.170
I mean, there was like lower attendance, sporadic.
00:08:18.420 --> 00:08:21.509
Training and then a three week, you know, lapse.
00:08:22.050 --> 00:08:22.319
It snowballed.
00:08:22.319 --> 00:08:22.860
Um, yeah.
00:08:22.860 --> 00:08:31.680
But then she came in and did a workout that she had done in the past and, uh, hit it just as hard as she had in the past, but she was not in the same condition that she had been in the past.
00:08:31.680 --> 00:08:37.259
And so the next day her arms were all swollen like Popeye and it was just, oh no, really sad.
00:08:37.259 --> 00:08:37.440
Yeah.
00:08:37.470 --> 00:08:44.980
'cause she had done a bunch of pull-ups and so, but that's the testament to the consistency aspect is that.
00:08:45.625 --> 00:08:46.945
I heard one coach online.
00:08:46.945 --> 00:08:50.440
I don't really agree with everything he says, but I thought it was an interesting concept that, who are we talking about?
00:08:50.634 --> 00:08:51.924
I don't even remember his name.
00:08:52.105 --> 00:08:52.159
Oh, okay.
00:08:52.164 --> 00:09:02.394
'cause I don't, I don't like most of what he says, but this is like just one little thing that I thought was interesting that, if you take time off, you could double your time that it takes to come back.
00:09:02.514 --> 00:09:09.144
So if you take three weeks off, you're gonna take six weeks to gradually ramp back up to where you were.
00:09:09.149 --> 00:09:09.820
It's the breakup rule.
00:09:10.945 --> 00:09:11.495
It's kinda like that.
00:09:11.495 --> 00:09:11.779
It's the breakup
00:09:11.779 --> 00:09:12.179
rule, right?
00:09:12.210 --> 00:09:18.625
Like however long you were with somebody, it's gonna take twice as long to get over them or something like that.
00:09:18.625 --> 00:09:19.105
Something
00:09:19.284 --> 00:09:20.815
maybe it's supposed to be actually the other way around.
00:09:20.815 --> 00:09:22.460
Like it takes us half as long, maybe half as
00:09:22.465 --> 00:09:23.445
long, hopefully, you know, depends.
00:09:23.585 --> 00:09:25.835
Depends on the relationship perhaps, but yeah.
00:09:26.284 --> 00:09:26.674
Yes.
00:09:26.674 --> 00:09:29.884
So in summation, consistency is safe.
00:09:29.975 --> 00:09:30.394
Yes.
00:09:30.424 --> 00:09:31.294
That's safe training.
00:09:31.355 --> 00:09:31.774
That's right.
00:09:31.774 --> 00:09:31.835
Um,
00:09:32.554 --> 00:09:38.345
it's interesting to lead with something like safety because obviously that is our primary job.
00:09:38.404 --> 00:09:48.544
Yes, we're teaching people how to do things, but we're also very much trying to keep people in a safe and productive mode of training or level of training.
00:09:49.269 --> 00:09:51.610
And that varies person to person, of course.
00:09:51.750 --> 00:09:58.200
But I often feel a little crummy about talking about consistency.
00:09:58.230 --> 00:10:00.570
'cause I feel like it sounds salesy.
00:10:01.019 --> 00:10:07.350
Like, oh, you got this membership, like, I'm gonna see you every two, you know, two days a week for the rest of your life.
00:10:07.379 --> 00:10:10.379
Yeah, I don't want it, I don't know how to stress that.
00:10:10.379 --> 00:10:11.455
That's really not what we're saying.
00:10:12.149 --> 00:10:12.539
You know,
00:10:12.830 --> 00:10:14.960
Is that what we're, is that, is that not what we're saying?
00:10:15.320 --> 00:10:15.710
Well, I mean,
00:10:15.710 --> 00:10:18.414
we are, but not for the sake of like.
00:10:19.220 --> 00:10:20.120
Our business.
00:10:20.240 --> 00:10:20.299
Yeah.
00:10:20.330 --> 00:10:21.830
We're not trying to reveal, it's really like
00:10:21.889 --> 00:10:23.360
it's for our members' benefit.
00:10:23.360 --> 00:10:23.419
Yeah.
00:10:23.450 --> 00:10:27.710
Like that is how it allows us to do our best work to keep them safe.
00:10:27.710 --> 00:10:29.240
To train well.
00:10:29.240 --> 00:10:29.250
Yeah.
00:10:29.330 --> 00:10:29.419
Yeah.
00:10:29.450 --> 00:10:29.659
Right.
00:10:29.659 --> 00:10:31.250
It's like kind of a multi-tiered thing.
00:10:31.340 --> 00:10:31.639
Yeah.
00:10:31.700 --> 00:10:38.450
And I think, uh, we did talk about this the last time we were having this conversation in case you didn't pick up when we were introducing this episode.
00:10:39.120 --> 00:10:40.830
Had this, we've done this before.
00:10:41.070 --> 00:10:41.519
What?
00:10:41.524 --> 00:10:41.934
This episode?
00:10:41.934 --> 00:10:42.154
Oh, this podcast.
00:10:43.710 --> 00:10:47.460
So, uh, we had an hour long podcast on here and we were feeling great, you know, and it
00:10:47.460 --> 00:10:48.389
was really good back
00:10:48.389 --> 00:10:50.340
on the horse, and we're like, yeah, we nailed it.
00:10:50.340 --> 00:10:55.389
And then I went in to hear the file and it was like the same 12 seconds looped over and over and over again.
00:10:55.855 --> 00:10:56.845
Compounding on itself.
00:10:56.845 --> 00:10:59.934
So it sounded like there was a thousand of us in a room saying the same thing.
00:11:00.024 --> 00:11:01.434
Not worth listening to, I guess.
00:11:01.524 --> 00:11:04.404
Yeah, it was unsalvageable even with ai.
00:11:04.585 --> 00:11:05.424
But anyway
00:11:05.485 --> 00:11:06.475
did you try ai?
00:11:06.565 --> 00:11:07.524
Oh, I tried everything.
00:11:07.524 --> 00:11:08.004
I tried.
00:11:08.004 --> 00:11:08.125
No way.
00:11:08.125 --> 00:11:08.335
Yeah,
00:11:08.605 --> 00:11:10.345
I gave it an, an effort.
00:11:10.644 --> 00:11:11.455
Old AI try.
00:11:12.325 --> 00:11:19.164
I, uh, um, what I had mentioned on that podcast that is relevant to what you were just saying though, is that we've.
00:11:20.009 --> 00:11:30.720
Really worked hard to try to align our business success with our client success, so our incentives are aligned so we do better in business when people are consistent.
00:11:30.720 --> 00:11:32.909
But that's because we want people to be consistent.
00:11:32.909 --> 00:11:40.274
We want them to get the effectiveness of their training in a safe manner and see these long-term results.
00:11:40.414 --> 00:11:41.955
And so we've designed our business.
00:11:42.490 --> 00:11:43.659
With the same incentives.
00:11:43.659 --> 00:11:48.399
Like we do better when our cons, when our clients are consistent, but it's also better for them.
00:11:48.399 --> 00:11:48.490
Oh yeah.
00:11:48.490 --> 00:11:52.960
So these incentives are aligned, so I don't feel smarmy about it at all.
00:11:52.960 --> 00:11:58.210
I feel like we've, we've structured our business so that our incentives match our clients and.
00:11:59.325 --> 00:12:03.434
One way to think about this too, is like, if you look at big box gyms, you know, I don't mm-hmm.
00:12:03.705 --> 00:12:13.445
I'm not gonna like, put down other businesses or other gyms that are, that might be competing with us, but I don't consider big box gyms competition, so I'm gonna shit on'em a little bit.
00:12:14.014 --> 00:12:17.399
So big box gyms, like 24 Hour Fitness and Ballet, toll Fitness.
00:12:17.705 --> 00:12:17.855
So you're
00:12:17.855 --> 00:12:20.465
coming from that background, like you know it through and through Yeah.
00:12:20.465 --> 00:12:23.705
LA Fitness, if you didn't know that, that Cody was a manager in.
00:12:24.500 --> 00:12:25.070
Bally's,
00:12:25.100 --> 00:12:26.210
Bally, total Fitness.
00:12:26.210 --> 00:12:26.659
I was, yeah.
00:12:26.659 --> 00:12:30.019
Manager of like a 20, no, I think it was bigger than that.
00:12:30.679 --> 00:12:32.450
It was like a 40,000 square foot facility.
00:12:32.450 --> 00:12:32.899
It was huge.
00:12:32.899 --> 00:12:33.080
Geez.
00:12:33.379 --> 00:12:34.669
And I was the fitness director there.
00:12:34.669 --> 00:12:40.159
Well, I know for a fact that A, if everybody showed up, they wouldn't even fit in the building.
00:12:40.250 --> 00:12:41.120
You know that, right.
00:12:41.240 --> 00:12:50.629
That building already set up to fail that location had, in the, in the teens of thousands, I forget exactly how many, but it was dozens of thousands of members.
00:12:51.090 --> 00:12:51.299
Dang.
00:12:51.330 --> 00:12:54.509
At any given time, of course, you look around the gym, there's 40 people in there.
00:12:54.960 --> 00:12:58.409
Their business model is based on the fact that you're not gonna show up.
00:12:58.679 --> 00:13:05.340
Yeah, they just want your cheap dues, your$25 membership or your$50 a month membership for life.
00:13:05.590 --> 00:13:09.730
And they get you on these long contracts and they know you're not gonna show up and they don't care.
00:13:09.759 --> 00:13:12.879
Their business is not aligned with their client's success.
00:13:12.879 --> 00:13:12.889
Well,
00:13:12.889 --> 00:13:15.429
and they're also, they're not a coach based gym.
00:13:15.429 --> 00:13:16.539
They do offer it, but.
00:13:17.095 --> 00:13:20.980
You know, there's people getting away with, it's just murder in there, you know, it's just way to terrible things.
00:13:20.980 --> 00:13:21.460
It's some people.
00:13:21.595 --> 00:13:22.059
Yeah, yeah,
00:13:22.615 --> 00:13:22.945
yeah.
00:13:22.945 --> 00:13:33.485
So sometimes when people think about the cost difference too, and like a big gym and then a small coaching gym like this, it's like, well that's because we only have room for 10 people in our class.
00:13:33.815 --> 00:13:36.065
We want you all there totally.
00:13:36.065 --> 00:13:40.174
So we're not gonna sell 50 memberships for the same class and hope 40 of you don't show up.
00:13:40.654 --> 00:13:41.524
So I think it's.
00:13:41.855 --> 00:13:42.695
I think it's awesome.
00:13:42.695 --> 00:13:46.264
I'm, I'm proud of the fact that we actually align our incentives with our clients.
00:13:47.174 --> 00:13:47.184
Yeah.
00:13:47.595 --> 00:13:52.065
And so consistency is safe training.
00:13:52.164 --> 00:13:56.455
And then obvious, the more obvious one is that consistency is effective training.
00:13:56.485 --> 00:14:06.634
And when you look at our gym and you look at the people who are achieving amazing things, you know, just when I say that, I'm sure that a handful of people just come to mind that we know of.
00:14:06.634 --> 00:14:06.965
Oh, yeah.
00:14:06.965 --> 00:14:11.644
In our gym, who are just like, wow, I can't believe how far they've come, the things that they're doing.
00:14:12.095 --> 00:14:16.955
That, that is always, always, always associated with the most consistent people.
00:14:16.985 --> 00:14:21.875
The people who have not only been here the longest, but who have missed the fewest classes.
00:14:21.904 --> 00:14:32.504
Well, you also mentioned early on as we started recording that, there's kind of an illusion to consistency in that there might be a mistaken idea of what it looks like.
00:14:32.509 --> 00:14:32.570
Mm-hmm.
00:14:32.649 --> 00:14:35.804
And I think consistency is really easily mistaken to be thought of.
00:14:35.804 --> 00:14:39.764
Like showing up every single time I'm ready to hit it a hundred percent.
00:14:39.764 --> 00:14:41.235
Like I'm feeling good every day.
00:14:41.534 --> 00:14:42.825
And that is not it.
00:14:42.825 --> 00:14:47.174
Like the people who are coming to mind are people who've probably had the rockiest roads with us.
00:14:47.679 --> 00:14:50.649
Injuries, lifestyle changes, whatever.
00:14:51.009 --> 00:14:59.950
But the fact that they're continuing to circle back and return, and return and return regardless of what their life is throwing at them, that's who sticks out to me.
00:14:59.980 --> 00:15:00.100
Mm-hmm.
00:15:00.340 --> 00:15:00.580
Right.
00:15:00.580 --> 00:15:02.110
You're showing up, right?
00:15:02.110 --> 00:15:06.789
Like that, that first consistency rung is just showing up.
00:15:07.120 --> 00:15:07.299
Yeah.
00:15:07.389 --> 00:15:13.720
There are more levels beyond that in terms of like how much you're lifting or how intense you are.
00:15:13.720 --> 00:15:15.105
Like consistency can kind of.
00:15:15.730 --> 00:15:25.539
Build on itself, but just showing up and just doing that minimum can go so far.
00:15:25.600 --> 00:15:25.720
Yeah.
00:15:25.720 --> 00:15:30.100
And those are the people who come to mind who have really accomplished amazing, amazing things with us.
00:15:30.159 --> 00:15:34.179
Yeah, and I don't know who to give credit to this, to, it's something we've talked about so often.
00:15:34.269 --> 00:15:41.830
I forget where we, where we learned it, but that sometimes, you know, if, if 50% is all you have to give.
00:15:42.235 --> 00:15:43.764
But you give 50%.
00:15:44.154 --> 00:15:46.975
If that was all you had to give, then you gave a hundred percent that day.
00:15:47.095 --> 00:15:47.455
Right.
00:15:47.815 --> 00:15:48.384
So I
00:15:48.384 --> 00:15:49.279
think I know where that came from.
00:15:49.279 --> 00:15:49.600
Mm-hmm.
00:15:49.679 --> 00:15:50.845
I think that's a Brene Brown thing.
00:15:50.934 --> 00:15:51.264
Okay.
00:15:51.325 --> 00:15:54.355
She had talked about that as like a relationship.
00:15:54.414 --> 00:15:54.504
Mm-hmm.
00:15:54.985 --> 00:16:04.225
Like showing up for your relationship and you might not be able to show up a hundred percent each day, or maybe each person is responsible for some portion of a hundred percent.
00:16:04.825 --> 00:16:05.184
Right.
00:16:05.919 --> 00:16:06.370
Similar.
00:16:06.399 --> 00:16:06.610
Yeah.
00:16:06.615 --> 00:16:06.855
Something like
00:16:06.855 --> 00:16:06.975
that.
00:16:07.245 --> 00:16:07.534
Yeah.
00:16:08.169 --> 00:16:10.169
But that's what real consistency looks like.
00:16:10.169 --> 00:16:10.259
Yeah.
00:16:10.289 --> 00:16:20.279
It's when you're dragging yourself in and you don't really want to be here or you have an injury and it's discouraging, but you're willing to trust your coach anyway and say, you know what, we can move through this.
00:16:21.195 --> 00:16:31.034
We could work around this, we can modify, we can assign you a different movement and being willing to do that and not feeling like a failure or, you know, maybe you do feel like a failure.
00:16:31.034 --> 00:16:34.815
Like that's, that's the funny thing is like, it kind of doesn't matter how you feel about it.
00:16:34.820 --> 00:16:35.340
Just do it anyway.
00:16:36.289 --> 00:16:36.580
Yeah.
00:16:36.580 --> 00:16:37.215
It's true.
00:16:37.245 --> 00:16:37.514
If you're
00:16:37.514 --> 00:16:38.595
just here doing it, it's so true.
00:16:38.595 --> 00:16:38.820
You may.
00:16:39.149 --> 00:16:40.289
Feel discouraged.
00:16:40.289 --> 00:16:42.149
You may feel like you're being held back.
00:16:42.149 --> 00:16:51.990
You may feel like this injury is stunting your growth or whatever, but you showing up is the difference between you continuing to make progress and reduce the likelihood of your injuries.
00:16:52.299 --> 00:16:57.820
Versus somebody who has an issue, let's, my elbows messed up, I can't come train.
00:16:57.850 --> 00:16:59.830
It's like, well, I don't buy that.
00:17:00.340 --> 00:17:00.830
You got three other limbs.
00:17:00.830 --> 00:17:01.875
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:17:01.879 --> 00:17:05.799
Like I used to have a coach with one arm, so that excuse doesn't fly with me.
00:17:05.799 --> 00:17:06.369
Right.
00:17:06.400 --> 00:17:06.730
Yeah.
00:17:07.089 --> 00:17:07.539
Well.
00:17:07.930 --> 00:17:11.230
And what an example to set for everybody else in the room too, right?
00:17:11.230 --> 00:17:21.720
Like when I had injured my glute the other summer you know, we still had early morning barbell club and I was going to that class and I did everything everybody else did, but with a dowel.
00:17:21.750 --> 00:17:21.839
Mm-hmm.
00:17:22.170 --> 00:17:27.329
And I could tell, I could feel that there was a really important.
00:17:28.200 --> 00:17:46.349
Opportunity there to show that even the coach, like even the person in charge or the strongest person in the room, or like whoever it is, if they can humble themselves enough to pick up a dowel instead of a barbell, because that's gonna be the best option for them to get a good workout that day.
00:17:46.440 --> 00:17:46.529
Mm-hmm.
00:17:46.950 --> 00:17:49.230
You're teaching other people in that moment too.
00:17:49.845 --> 00:17:51.704
We all get discouraged by injury.
00:17:51.704 --> 00:17:56.025
We all get discouraged by whatever reason we feel like we can't come to the gym.
00:17:56.355 --> 00:18:03.494
And you getting back up and showing up and making it happen some way is incredibly inspiring.
00:18:03.494 --> 00:18:08.384
Like we are a young gym and one of the reasons that we have this podcast is.
00:18:08.759 --> 00:18:15.029
To teach all of these things kind of upfront rather than like many years down the line.
00:18:15.420 --> 00:18:21.119
And so that, I think is a really important example to set for other members too.
00:18:21.210 --> 00:18:22.230
Yeah, that's a good point.
00:18:22.230 --> 00:18:26.430
That part of consistency is just inspiring the people who you're with too.
00:18:26.490 --> 00:18:31.769
So it's not just a selfish thing, like, no, we're a team being here showing up every time.
00:18:31.799 --> 00:18:34.914
Like you're setting a great example for other people that you know.
00:18:36.585 --> 00:18:38.835
May not have perfect circumstances either.
00:18:38.835 --> 00:18:51.684
And so you, you know, if, if you are fitter than them or usually outperforming them, being willing to like humble yourself and do a lesser workout for a period of time while you're healing is a great example for those people.
00:18:51.684 --> 00:18:52.015
Yeah.
00:18:52.345 --> 00:18:52.674
Ego can kill
00:18:52.674 --> 00:18:54.115
you in both directions, right?
00:18:54.115 --> 00:18:54.174
Yeah.
00:18:54.174 --> 00:18:56.279
Like if you are trying to like.
00:18:56.994 --> 00:18:57.565
Crush it.
00:18:57.565 --> 00:19:01.494
Smash it to, you know, at your body's expense in front of everybody.
00:19:01.494 --> 00:19:03.085
That's like one way ego shows up.
00:19:03.295 --> 00:19:07.285
But the other is to have so much ego that you're not even willing to show up.
00:19:07.375 --> 00:19:07.855
Right.
00:19:07.944 --> 00:19:08.214
Yeah.
00:19:08.694 --> 00:19:20.845
And that's something that I think our gym does really special Lee, in a special way especially, I dunno, but we've had a handful of people who have joined our gym who are kind of wied out by the idea of working out in front of other people.
00:19:20.845 --> 00:19:21.625
Mm-hmm.
00:19:21.625 --> 00:19:22.525
And I kind of just say like.
00:19:22.914 --> 00:19:23.785
You gotta get over that.
00:19:23.815 --> 00:19:23.994
Yeah.
00:19:24.085 --> 00:19:28.194
Like a a, nobody's watching you, but like b people are are watching you.
00:19:28.200 --> 00:19:28.319
Yeah.
00:19:28.325 --> 00:19:39.684
Like we are a collective community, um, of like-minded people and you know, setting that example is gonna have a benefit beyond just yourself.
00:19:39.744 --> 00:19:40.285
Yeah, for sure.
00:19:40.404 --> 00:19:42.325
Yeah, definitely.
00:19:43.670 --> 00:19:49.549
The other thing about consistency I'd like to talk to you a little bit about is like the psychological aspect of it.
00:19:49.579 --> 00:19:54.049
It is so much easier to keep going than to start going.
00:19:54.559 --> 00:20:03.710
Starting is the worst part, like every, I mean, if any of you remember what it was like to not have a fitness program routine, aren't like, get themselves here.
00:20:03.740 --> 00:20:04.130
Yeah.
00:20:04.519 --> 00:20:06.559
Or to get yourself to the gym the first time, or?
00:20:07.325 --> 00:20:17.404
To change an eating habit or anything like quitting alcohol or whatever like that, it's always that first go out of it that just is, that just sucks.
00:20:17.555 --> 00:20:26.835
Like there's fear of, there's an unknown, there's feel of fear of failure or fear of, um, showing up and being seen.
00:20:26.835 --> 00:20:30.144
You know, there's all kinds of different fears around starting.
00:20:30.654 --> 00:20:35.394
And what's interesting is even if you get past that and you're consistent for a while, but then you drop off.
00:20:35.859 --> 00:20:37.119
Those fears return.
00:20:37.240 --> 00:20:37.660
Oh yeah.
00:20:37.660 --> 00:20:40.240
When it comes time to restart.
00:20:40.240 --> 00:20:44.200
So better to just be consistent and not ever take the time off.
00:20:45.069 --> 00:20:45.460
Totally.
00:20:45.460 --> 00:20:48.940
'cause then you just avoid that whole psychological rollercoaster.
00:20:49.059 --> 00:20:51.279
Well, ab like, I completely agree.
00:20:51.279 --> 00:20:56.710
And you know when we first moved here, it was in the middle of COVID or right at the beginning of COVID.
00:20:56.890 --> 00:20:58.480
And so nothing was going on.
00:20:58.480 --> 00:21:04.359
We didn't have a gym, we weren't working, we weren't doing a lot and.
00:21:04.944 --> 00:21:09.805
I had mistakenly thought, okay, I had trained really hard for the last seven years.
00:21:09.984 --> 00:21:12.775
I can probably stand to take a year off and I'll be fine.
00:21:12.805 --> 00:21:12.894
Mm-hmm.
00:21:13.194 --> 00:21:15.115
And that was not the case at all.
00:21:15.115 --> 00:21:16.734
Lifestyle had changed completely.
00:21:17.184 --> 00:21:24.265
Definitely won too many nachos, lots of movie watching, uh, and a long winter, you know, up on the slope.
00:21:24.625 --> 00:21:27.444
And my body totally deconditioned.
00:21:29.140 --> 00:21:33.490
Shocking to me how quickly I could lose as much muscle as I did.
00:21:34.059 --> 00:21:38.230
And you know, it's taken years to come back to that.
00:21:38.230 --> 00:21:38.349
Mm-hmm.
00:21:38.589 --> 00:21:44.890
That's, it's taken years to come back to 80% of my fittest body.
00:21:44.890 --> 00:21:44.980
Mm-hmm.
00:21:46.210 --> 00:21:47.500
I'm also only getting older.
00:21:47.559 --> 00:21:47.974
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:21:47.980 --> 00:21:48.400
You know, like this
00:21:48.400 --> 00:21:49.630
only gets harder.
00:21:49.960 --> 00:21:50.079
Right.
00:21:50.230 --> 00:21:55.809
The longer you like the, the more we like fall off the wagon, like you're getting older simultaneously.
00:21:55.809 --> 00:21:55.869
Yeah.
00:21:55.869 --> 00:21:57.910
So we're not making it easier for us.
00:21:57.940 --> 00:21:58.180
Yeah.
00:21:58.450 --> 00:21:59.019
At all.
00:21:59.230 --> 00:21:59.500
Yeah.
00:21:59.500 --> 00:22:00.940
There's definitely no such thing.
00:22:00.940 --> 00:22:05.079
This may be a whole other topic for a podcast, but there's no such thing as maintenance.
00:22:05.875 --> 00:22:06.174
Yeah.
00:22:06.204 --> 00:22:08.005
There's just not, you're either making, it's an illusion.
00:22:08.065 --> 00:22:08.275
Yeah.
00:22:08.275 --> 00:22:12.865
You're either making progress somewhere or you are decaying because that is the nature of the universe.
00:22:12.865 --> 00:22:14.424
I actually thought about that today.
00:22:14.484 --> 00:22:16.164
Just, it's like this infinite heat death.
00:22:16.224 --> 00:22:16.315
What?
00:22:16.795 --> 00:22:26.125
Kevin said something today during open gym, like he's trying to avoid perishing or something, and that exact thing came to mind'cause it's true.
00:22:26.125 --> 00:22:27.474
We're just trying to.
00:22:28.464 --> 00:22:30.174
Outrun the inevitable, right?
00:22:30.180 --> 00:22:30.369
Yeah.
00:22:30.835 --> 00:22:31.134
Yeah.
00:22:31.615 --> 00:22:37.585
Oh, and something I wanted to say about setbacks and lifestyle change and injury is like those are gonna happen.
00:22:37.585 --> 00:22:37.595
Mm-hmm.
00:22:37.765 --> 00:22:39.234
Like expect it to happen.
00:22:39.234 --> 00:22:41.154
Like let's just throw that out there right now.
00:22:41.184 --> 00:22:41.335
Mm-hmm.
00:22:41.369 --> 00:22:43.525
There are gonna be set setbacks to your training.
00:22:43.585 --> 00:22:47.545
No one has just the up and up trajectory, not even like.
00:22:48.174 --> 00:22:49.434
Olivia Reeves, right?
00:22:49.434 --> 00:22:54.924
Like from a distance, it looks like she's just on this upward trajectory forever.
00:22:55.375 --> 00:22:58.464
And there's just like no ceiling in sight.
00:22:58.684 --> 00:23:00.424
Look her up if you haven't heard of her.
00:23:00.424 --> 00:23:05.525
She's an incredible young weightlifter who's just rocking the world.
00:23:06.305 --> 00:23:08.164
Um, but even she would have setbacks.
00:23:08.434 --> 00:23:09.904
Everybody has an off day.
00:23:09.904 --> 00:23:12.065
Everybody has a meeting that comes up.
00:23:12.095 --> 00:23:14.045
Everybody has family emergencies.
00:23:14.105 --> 00:23:15.545
Everybody has injuries.
00:23:15.785 --> 00:23:16.865
It's gonna happen.
00:23:17.480 --> 00:23:17.750
Yep.
00:23:18.200 --> 00:23:18.440
Yeah.
00:23:19.190 --> 00:23:21.890
Can't be fair weather about this, basically.
00:23:22.190 --> 00:23:22.819
Mm-hmm.
00:23:22.910 --> 00:23:23.269
Yeah,
00:23:24.170 --> 00:23:26.089
I think most of our members are getting the hang of that.
00:23:26.089 --> 00:23:26.269
Oh, for sure.
00:23:26.269 --> 00:23:26.960
I really do.
00:23:27.049 --> 00:23:32.990
I, it's a lot of returning conversations and we don't get to have those conversations with everyone, you know?
00:23:32.990 --> 00:23:33.559
You and I.
00:23:33.559 --> 00:23:35.960
It's you and me and a hundred members.
00:23:35.990 --> 00:23:36.079
Mm-hmm.
00:23:36.559 --> 00:23:37.910
Which is amazing.
00:23:38.359 --> 00:23:42.019
And this is exactly why we have the podcast.
00:23:42.019 --> 00:23:43.579
We wanna be able to talk to you.
00:23:44.750 --> 00:23:53.119
Almost like we're talking one-on-one, but I just also wanna kind of plug in here that remember you have the opportunity to meet with your coach whenever you need to, right?
00:23:53.125 --> 00:23:53.154
Mm-hmm.
00:23:53.234 --> 00:23:55.970
We have progress reviews that you can schedule at any time.
00:23:56.339 --> 00:23:56.670
You know.
00:23:57.105 --> 00:24:00.305
Given the schedule works, but we want you, we're working on that.
00:24:00.365 --> 00:24:00.454
Yeah.
00:24:00.454 --> 00:24:08.375
We want you to have access to us so that we can help you through these challenges that I mentioned are inevitably gonna happen, and how do we stay on track?
00:24:08.525 --> 00:24:13.505
How do we make adjustments for what your life realistically allows?
00:24:14.255 --> 00:24:14.464
Yep.
00:24:14.974 --> 00:24:15.305
Yeah.
00:24:15.664 --> 00:24:19.295
And that's a moving target that changes all the fing time.
00:24:19.654 --> 00:24:20.105
Oh yeah.
00:24:20.825 --> 00:24:21.125
Yeah.
00:24:21.154 --> 00:24:23.375
Where you're going is always gonna be a moving target.
00:24:23.555 --> 00:24:23.615
Yeah.
00:24:23.644 --> 00:24:28.474
We can only hope for a sort of directionally correct trajectory.
00:24:28.954 --> 00:24:29.045
Mm-hmm.
00:24:29.285 --> 00:24:29.295
Um.
00:24:30.230 --> 00:24:31.940
And make adjustments as we go.
00:24:32.299 --> 00:24:33.769
And that's what real consistency is.
00:24:33.769 --> 00:24:35.960
It's, it's not doing the same thing over and over.
00:24:35.990 --> 00:24:40.579
I think that's where the misnomer comes from is like consistency is doing the same thing over and over and over.
00:24:41.029 --> 00:24:45.140
No consistency is being willing to pivot in order to continue to do the thing.
00:24:45.200 --> 00:24:45.380
Mm-hmm.
00:24:45.680 --> 00:24:48.440
Rather than letting any deviation trip you up.
00:24:48.529 --> 00:24:48.740
Yeah.
00:24:48.740 --> 00:24:50.329
It's trending in the right direction.
00:24:50.329 --> 00:24:50.390
Yeah.
00:24:50.390 --> 00:24:52.099
Even if it looks completely different.
00:24:52.444 --> 00:24:53.494
Leave and you planned.
00:24:53.704 --> 00:24:53.974
Yep.
00:24:54.154 --> 00:24:54.484
Yeah.
00:24:54.724 --> 00:24:56.914
And injuries are gonna happen outside the gym.
00:24:57.035 --> 00:24:59.164
Like it's not just, they usually do, we're not ta Yeah.
00:24:59.164 --> 00:25:02.255
Usually we're not talking about just like exercise induced injuries.
00:25:02.255 --> 00:25:06.454
It's like every, it's like you're gonna be injured, you might as well also be fit.
00:25:06.904 --> 00:25:12.505
You know what's funny is when we were coaching in the city pickup basketball was like, oh yeah.
00:25:12.595 --> 00:25:13.434
The worst.
00:25:13.440 --> 00:25:13.480
Yeah.
00:25:13.525 --> 00:25:19.345
Like members of mine who would play pick up basketball always wrecked themselves and.
00:25:19.769 --> 00:25:24.599
Pick a basketball is not a thing here, which I'm okay with for one, but you know what it is.
00:25:24.720 --> 00:25:24.809
Mm-hmm.
00:25:25.170 --> 00:25:26.519
Shoveling snow,
00:25:26.579 --> 00:25:27.180
gardening,
00:25:27.240 --> 00:25:28.200
gardening, like, yeah.
00:25:28.680 --> 00:25:37.319
There are these like things going on on the weekends that like, don't sound like they're gonna be so physically taxing, but like people are wrecking themselves out there.
00:25:37.319 --> 00:25:37.329
Yeah.
00:25:37.890 --> 00:25:38.039
Yeah.
00:25:38.069 --> 00:25:42.390
Just had our uh, sixth gardening injury this year in one in my classes.
00:25:42.420 --> 00:25:43.079
No way.
00:25:43.815 --> 00:25:44.654
You're keeping track of those.
00:25:44.684 --> 00:25:44.805
Oh
00:25:44.805 --> 00:25:45.164
yeah.
00:25:45.164 --> 00:25:48.644
So usually it's back issues, uh, or knee issues.
00:25:48.644 --> 00:25:48.734
Mm-hmm.
00:25:48.974 --> 00:25:56.115
And in this case, uh, someone got some, uh, swollen wrist from pulling weeds too hard, like Oh my, like, yeah.
00:25:56.174 --> 00:25:56.775
Oh no.
00:25:57.345 --> 00:25:59.444
So careful out there folks.
00:25:59.505 --> 00:25:59.865
Yeah.
00:25:59.894 --> 00:26:00.914
But she came in
00:26:01.454 --> 00:26:01.785
Awesome.
00:26:01.934 --> 00:26:02.384
Yeah.
00:26:02.384 --> 00:26:04.140
Who needs a rest and had a great workout.
00:26:04.464 --> 00:26:04.664
Yeah.
00:26:04.664 --> 00:26:07.125
We, we just worked around it and it was great.
00:26:07.484 --> 00:26:07.664
Yeah.
00:26:08.115 --> 00:26:10.569
While we're on the subject of injuries too, the.
00:26:11.605 --> 00:26:19.015
It's very important to realize that the same mechanisms that help you get fitter from your workouts are at play in healing injuries.
00:26:19.375 --> 00:26:27.565
So in its broadest sense, a workout actually is a breakdown of your systems.
00:26:27.595 --> 00:26:37.525
Somehow you're either challenging your heart to, uh, outpace what it would normally do, your lungs, your lung capacity, your breaking down muscle tissue, literally.
00:26:38.065 --> 00:26:53.994
Microscopic level scarring of your muscles, and it's that trauma in quotations, that sort of microtrauma that your body's adapting to that makes you stronger, leaner, improves your VO two max and all those kind of things.
00:26:54.444 --> 00:27:05.214
Well, that means that the same stimulus of challenging your body and the hormonal response, the down to a cellular level of how those cells repair.
00:27:05.694 --> 00:27:07.345
That's all the same mechanism.
00:27:07.345 --> 00:27:14.765
So if you are working out while you're injured, you're actually very likely to recover from your injury faster.
00:27:15.095 --> 00:27:15.275
Totally.
00:27:15.335 --> 00:27:17.255
Than if you're just taking it easy.
00:27:17.434 --> 00:27:19.835
I'm not talking about pushing the injury itself.
00:27:19.954 --> 00:27:20.045
Mm-hmm.
00:27:20.375 --> 00:27:24.964
You know, like if, I mean, if you have tendonitis in a joint, I'm not gonna like.
00:27:25.805 --> 00:27:28.144
Tell you to load up that joint and just keep working.
00:27:28.144 --> 00:27:43.535
That's not what I'm saying, but working around it and having a full body exercise experience and being consistent and trying to improve in other areas and still gaining strength and all those hormonal responses that you get from that training is gonna help the injured area.
00:27:43.654 --> 00:27:43.805
Mm-hmm.
00:27:44.134 --> 00:27:50.434
So just something to keep in mind when it comes to injuries and whether that's the thing that's holding you back or not.
00:27:50.555 --> 00:27:51.125
Totally.
00:27:51.484 --> 00:27:54.095
And I think just what you were saying just makes me think about.
00:27:54.740 --> 00:27:56.420
Building momentum as well.
00:27:56.660 --> 00:28:05.509
I think there's kind of a tendency to feel this kind of starting and stopping, uh, when it comes to a lack of consistency.
00:28:05.509 --> 00:28:10.220
And you get to celebrate the accomplishment of having come in.
00:28:10.819 --> 00:28:13.400
Every single time you make that happen.
00:28:13.400 --> 00:28:13.460
Yeah.
00:28:13.730 --> 00:28:18.019
Sometimes coming to class isn't the right choice, but I'll say, you know, come to open gym, I'll work with you.
00:28:18.105 --> 00:28:18.525
Mm-hmm.
00:28:18.740 --> 00:28:26.630
You know, there's gonna be something that we can do to continue to move the needle in the direction that you told us you wanna go to when you first sat down.
00:28:26.630 --> 00:28:29.839
Like, just know that every conversation that we're having with you.
00:28:30.589 --> 00:28:32.119
Encouraging you to come in.
00:28:32.569 --> 00:28:38.299
It might feel pushy at times, but just know that we're advocating exactly what you asked us for.
00:28:38.390 --> 00:28:38.690
Yeah.
00:28:38.900 --> 00:28:47.180
You know, this is what we do best and we need you guys to remind that to us too.
00:28:47.210 --> 00:28:48.769
Like we are no exception.
00:28:49.069 --> 00:28:52.825
We run up or we bump up against all the same challenges.
00:28:53.444 --> 00:28:55.619
And you know, you're my trading partner.
00:28:55.619 --> 00:28:57.750
You know, I really appreciate all the times that you.
00:28:58.335 --> 00:29:01.815
Ask me if I'm going to the gym, you know, it's right next door.
00:29:01.875 --> 00:29:02.055
Mm-hmm.
00:29:02.295 --> 00:29:09.164
And you would think at this point it would be a given, but sometimes it's not like, there are so many days that I wanna bail, I'm tired.
00:29:09.615 --> 00:29:11.474
I have a lot on my plate.
00:29:11.474 --> 00:29:14.894
Like in general, like aside from work and.
00:29:15.525 --> 00:29:17.444
There are some days where it just feels like too much.
00:29:17.444 --> 00:29:19.365
But I have never regretted going in.
00:29:19.454 --> 00:29:19.904
Ever.
00:29:19.910 --> 00:29:20.000
Yeah.
00:29:20.005 --> 00:29:20.535
Ever, ever.
00:29:20.535 --> 00:29:26.265
And I know that I've been able to get back to where I am prepared to compete again.
00:29:26.265 --> 00:29:26.355
Mm-hmm.
00:29:26.595 --> 00:29:29.984
You know, after seven years because of that consistency.
00:29:30.285 --> 00:29:32.295
And it took a long time to get there.
00:29:32.295 --> 00:29:32.355
Yeah.
00:29:32.384 --> 00:29:33.224
I'm not gonna lie.
00:29:33.255 --> 00:29:35.295
Like it was touch and go for a while.
00:29:35.295 --> 00:29:42.724
And ever since we've had formal classes, like peak fit classes, that's really where it made the difference for me.
00:29:42.730 --> 00:29:42.829
Yeah.
00:29:43.519 --> 00:29:43.759
Yeah.
00:29:44.000 --> 00:29:44.420
Yeah.
00:29:44.420 --> 00:29:54.619
And I think you make a good point about how long it took to get consistent too, is just like, that's what, that's how you get consistency is you, when you're not consistent, you just, you show up again.
00:29:54.680 --> 00:29:55.250
One more.
00:29:55.255 --> 00:29:55.404
Mm-hmm.
00:29:55.484 --> 00:29:58.579
One more, like, today's workout is the most important workout of your life.
00:29:58.940 --> 00:30:00.440
'cause today is all that there is.
00:30:00.440 --> 00:30:00.450
Yeah.
00:30:00.829 --> 00:30:04.880
The past is done and you can't predict what's gonna be happening later on.
00:30:04.880 --> 00:30:07.279
So like, today's workout is that important?
00:30:07.279 --> 00:30:07.970
It's everything.
00:30:07.974 --> 00:30:08.365
Mm-hmm.
00:30:09.619 --> 00:30:09.859
Show up today.
00:30:10.009 --> 00:30:10.109
Well, and.
00:30:10.759 --> 00:30:11.990
It's taken about three years.
00:30:11.990 --> 00:30:12.170
Right.
00:30:12.170 --> 00:30:13.309
As long as we've been in business.
00:30:13.309 --> 00:30:13.400
Mm-hmm.
00:30:13.789 --> 00:30:19.609
For me to get back to where I am right now, which is still not at my very best, but I'm pretty glad to be here.
00:30:19.609 --> 00:30:19.670
Yeah.
00:30:19.670 --> 00:30:21.980
You know, I'm just grateful to not be back there
00:30:22.069 --> 00:30:23.480
better than we were three years ago.
00:30:23.480 --> 00:30:24.170
Yeah, for sure.
00:30:24.740 --> 00:30:32.880
I want to touch on too, before we run out of time here, the we've been talking about injuries derailing people a lot, but there's also family and obligations.
00:30:33.180 --> 00:30:35.549
And I wanna touch on this in a couple different ways because.
00:30:35.894 --> 00:30:41.204
Uh, if you have young kids, I, I've raised three kids, so I'm not just talking outta turn here.
00:30:41.204 --> 00:30:45.105
I've, I've experienced, I know where you're at, uh, with that.
00:30:45.105 --> 00:30:55.125
And it is crazy the the number of commitments that you can get yourself into because you wanna say yes to your kids all the time, or you want to, you wanna be a great parent.
00:30:55.154 --> 00:30:57.755
And I think it really needs to be.
00:30:58.285 --> 00:31:02.339
Recognized and it can't be overstated that you showing the commitment.
00:31:03.055 --> 00:31:10.704
To yourself to take care of yourself and to, to show up to the gym when you don't want to or when they have things going on.
00:31:10.704 --> 00:31:12.325
And sometimes you have to say no.
00:31:12.625 --> 00:31:15.535
The thing is, is that it's a monkey see, monkey do situation.
00:31:15.535 --> 00:31:18.654
Like kids learn from example more than any lecturing.
00:31:19.164 --> 00:31:22.674
You my, you know, it's like my parents smoked and they told me not to smoke.
00:31:22.674 --> 00:31:25.884
And it's like, well, I'm gonna try that'cause you're doing it all the time anyway.
00:31:26.125 --> 00:31:41.154
So, uh, but, but being that example for them, like if you really, I, I know as a parent, I want my kids to be fit and healthy, so I look at this as somewhat of an act of service to them.
00:31:41.394 --> 00:31:41.545
Yeah.
00:31:41.545 --> 00:31:43.015
You're setting the best example.
00:31:43.045 --> 00:31:43.375
Yes.
00:31:43.434 --> 00:31:46.045
And if you have adult kids.
00:31:47.154 --> 00:31:51.355
There's kind of another aspect to this, which is that you're, which you now have, which I now have.
00:31:51.355 --> 00:31:51.625
Yeah.
00:31:51.654 --> 00:31:54.865
Which is, uh, once you have adult kids, it's a little different.
00:31:54.865 --> 00:31:55.164
Yes.
00:31:55.164 --> 00:32:07.684
You can still be a great example to them as you age, you know, to show them that you don't ever have to just sort of succumb to decrepitude and, and failing, but they're gonna be taking care of you someday.
00:32:07.714 --> 00:32:15.035
Like, that's kind of the way the world works is that, and eventually our kids have to step up and help us out and.
00:32:15.680 --> 00:32:24.559
Showing a commitment to your fitness is an act of service to those people who are gonna be taking care of you later on because you're gonna be, be able to push out that day,
00:32:24.799 --> 00:32:25.220
right?
00:32:25.319 --> 00:32:27.105
For when they have to put their lives on hold.
00:32:27.255 --> 00:32:27.545
Yeah.
00:32:27.599 --> 00:32:30.599
They may have to put their lives on hold to take care of you for a while.
00:32:30.849 --> 00:32:32.019
And you could push that out.
00:32:32.119 --> 00:32:36.170
Very likely to the last couple weeks of your life rather than the last couple decades.
00:32:36.410 --> 00:32:36.980
Yeah.
00:32:37.309 --> 00:32:38.180
And that's a big difference.
00:32:38.180 --> 00:32:38.839
What a different story.
00:32:38.839 --> 00:32:39.349
Yeah.
00:32:39.440 --> 00:32:39.589
Yeah.
00:32:39.589 --> 00:32:46.640
And so I may, may sound dramatic the way I'm phrasing that, but it's, I see it, I see it all the time.
00:32:46.700 --> 00:32:49.700
And so it's not overstating the matter
00:32:49.759 --> 00:32:50.000
Yeah.
00:32:50.029 --> 00:32:50.599
To be a
00:32:50.599 --> 00:32:56.809
great example for your kids, but also to, to take care of yourself almost as a, a service to your kids too.
00:32:56.930 --> 00:32:57.319
Most definitely.
00:32:57.319 --> 00:32:57.859
So that they're not.
00:32:58.384 --> 00:33:00.305
You know, spending decades of their lives.
00:33:00.815 --> 00:33:05.644
Taking care of you when you can't get up off the floor or can't go to the bathroom by yourself or whatever like that.
00:33:05.644 --> 00:33:06.904
That's a real, that's a reality.
00:33:06.964 --> 00:33:09.095
A lot of us don't want to think about it, but yeah.
00:33:09.125 --> 00:33:10.805
Uh, we're all, we're all heading here.
00:33:11.200 --> 00:33:11.680
We're all going there.
00:33:11.680 --> 00:33:13.085
We're all heading in that direction, for sure.
00:33:13.654 --> 00:33:13.805
Yeah.
00:33:13.805 --> 00:33:28.000
I would say, um, you know, I can't relate to being a parent, but my parents both set this example for me and I, they don't really believe me, but I tell'em all the time that they have to take some credit for the direction that my career has taken because my mom would wake up.
00:33:28.519 --> 00:33:31.640
Early at four in the morning to work out every single morning.
00:33:31.640 --> 00:33:39.890
And my dad was a competitive bodybuilder and dragged me to the gym before school every morning.
00:33:39.890 --> 00:33:50.240
So, you know, it took a while for me to kind of find my own way, but they showed me with great commitment that this is a part of your life and this is gonna allow you to live well.
00:33:50.509 --> 00:33:51.019
And they are.
00:33:51.440 --> 00:33:51.950
They really are.
00:33:52.309 --> 00:33:52.579
Yeah.
00:33:54.214 --> 00:33:54.605
That's great.
00:33:54.605 --> 00:33:56.224
Is there anything we missed so far?
00:33:56.345 --> 00:33:56.704
Oh gosh.
00:33:56.704 --> 00:33:59.089
I'm sure we did just because that first time was so great.
00:33:59.089 --> 00:33:59.369
Guys.
00:33:59.609 --> 00:34:00.170
I wish you could hear it.
00:34:00.170 --> 00:34:01.174
It was like light me in a bottle.
00:34:01.174 --> 00:34:01.775
But you know what?
00:34:01.805 --> 00:34:04.055
We're gonna have more conversations about this.
00:34:04.055 --> 00:34:07.025
I'm sure this has a way of creeping up all the time.
00:34:07.025 --> 00:34:11.985
Like I mentioned in the beginning, this is a conversation that Cody and I are having always, and yeah.
00:34:12.869 --> 00:34:13.469
More to come.
00:34:13.769 --> 00:34:14.639
Yeah, more to, to try.
00:34:15.059 --> 00:34:16.829
We have lots more to talk to you about.
00:34:16.829 --> 00:34:18.329
We also have multiple podcasts.
00:34:18.329 --> 00:34:20.159
So this is the Ruby Peak Performance.
00:34:20.190 --> 00:34:20.579
Mm-hmm.
00:34:20.670 --> 00:34:21.690
Uh, series.
00:34:21.690 --> 00:34:25.559
We also have a series that we put out a couple years ago called The Philosophy of Fitness.
00:34:25.739 --> 00:34:25.980
Oh, it's been
00:34:25.980 --> 00:34:27.059
more than a couple of years.
00:34:27.239 --> 00:34:27.389
Um,
00:34:28.230 --> 00:34:29.909
a couple can be okay.
00:34:30.000 --> 00:34:30.150
Right.
00:34:30.239 --> 00:34:33.269
So, uh, the philosophy of fitness where we talk about.
00:34:34.050 --> 00:34:39.750
The non fitness related things that fitness concepts carry over to, and it was a really fun series.
00:34:39.750 --> 00:34:41.010
I don't even think we're done with it yet.
00:34:41.070 --> 00:34:42.300
Other things keep coming up.
00:34:42.480 --> 00:34:42.869
Oh, yeah.
00:34:42.900 --> 00:34:48.599
Uh, we've toyed with the idea of writing a book and that that podcast series would be the, the fodder for that book.
00:34:48.809 --> 00:34:51.389
Kinda a first draft, if you will, but you get to listen in on that.
00:34:51.900 --> 00:34:55.380
Overall arching channel there is live all your life.
00:34:55.755 --> 00:34:57.914
And it has several series on it.
00:34:57.914 --> 00:35:01.574
So anyway, lots of places to tune into us talking about all kinds of different things.
00:35:01.994 --> 00:35:04.875
And soon we would like to have some guests on this show.
00:35:05.204 --> 00:35:10.724
We'd like to have our members, you who are listening for the Ruby Peak Performance podcast.
00:35:10.815 --> 00:35:10.994
Totally.
00:35:10.994 --> 00:35:17.025
And because you're the star of the show, like we, we have lots we wanna share and, and help people, and it's a passion for us.
00:35:17.025 --> 00:35:23.514
But, you are actually the star of the show, so we would like to highlight that and and have you guys on here and get to know more.
00:35:23.579 --> 00:35:24.239
I'm so excited.
00:35:24.239 --> 00:35:24.639
More about you.
00:35:24.639 --> 00:35:25.425
Yeah, I'm so excited.
00:35:25.425 --> 00:35:25.724
Me too.
00:35:26.054 --> 00:35:26.264
Yeah,
00:35:26.684 --> 00:35:28.304
so I guess we'll wrap this one up.
00:35:28.394 --> 00:35:28.605
Yeah.
00:35:28.605 --> 00:35:29.894
Thanks for making it happen today.
00:35:29.925 --> 00:35:30.525
Yeah, you too.
00:35:30.585 --> 00:35:31.485
It's a busy day.
00:35:31.635 --> 00:35:34.755
You have an appointment in 25, 30 minutes.
00:35:34.784 --> 00:35:34.875
Yep.
00:35:35.054 --> 00:35:36.945
Alright, I'll see you next time.
00:35:37.514 --> 00:35:37.875
Love you.
00:35:38.025 --> 00:35:38.324
Love you.
