TRANSKRIP 🔗
00:00:07.988 --> 00:00:10.189
Welcome to FCS Unscripted.
00:00:10.189 --> 00:00:17.516
A new podcast for One Team, fcs, where we look at the stories behind everyone in Franklin County schools.
00:00:17.516 --> 00:00:19.586
Welcome to FCS Unscripted.
00:00:19.586 --> 00:00:20.972
This is Superintendent Mark Kopp.
00:00:20.972 --> 00:00:22.660
I'm awfully glad to be with you today.
00:00:22.660 --> 00:00:32.572
We've got a couple of special guests coming up in just a few minutes, but we are headed down the stretch and everyone's going to see a newspaper article coming out this weekend.
00:00:32.572 --> 00:00:36.871
Down the stretch they come, just like the Kentucky Derby coming up.
00:00:36.871 --> 00:00:39.548
Our kiddos are coming down the stretch.
00:00:40.180 --> 00:00:45.533
State assessment actually begins tomorrow in our district and continues throughout next week.
00:00:45.533 --> 00:00:57.856
So this is obviously a very important time for our students to get lots of good rest and be ready and prepared to do their very best on the state assessment.
00:00:57.856 --> 00:01:11.370
We all know that that state assessment is an indication of one tiny moment in time, but we also understand how important that moment of time is so much like the Kentucky Derby coming up, the big race.
00:01:11.370 --> 00:01:15.049
This is going to be the big race for us.
00:01:15.049 --> 00:01:25.754
The other part of coming down the stretch making the analogy with the Kentucky Derby is our seniors, who have been going around the court.
00:01:25.754 --> 00:01:27.820
You know a mile and a quarter track.
00:01:27.820 --> 00:01:47.012
They can see the finish line ahead and they are coming down the stretch hard and fast and graduation is May 25th in our district, on Saturday, may 25th, at 10 am for Franklin County High School and at 6 pm at Western Hills High School.
00:01:47.031 --> 00:01:48.984
Those are our two main graduations.
00:01:48.984 --> 00:01:52.316
Then we also have for our two main high schools.
00:01:52.316 --> 00:02:05.567
We also have a graduation at the Academy and I believe the date on that is Friday, may 24th at 10 am and then that will be at the Paul Sawyer Library.
00:02:05.567 --> 00:02:13.750
And then we also have a graduation for William Cofield High School which will take place at Bradford Hall on Friday, may 24th at 1 pm.
00:02:13.750 --> 00:02:29.413
Very excited to see our students get to walk across the stage, shake my hand, get that diploma and start their post-high school careers, whether that's in the workplace, in the military or going to university, going to college.
00:02:29.413 --> 00:02:34.051
So very exciting time to be the superintendent of Franklin County Schools.
00:02:34.051 --> 00:02:35.727
We're real excited for our kids.
00:02:35.727 --> 00:02:43.114
Also very excited to have two really important, wonderful, awesome guests with us today.
00:02:43.114 --> 00:02:45.227
We have two people from the Frank awesome guests with us today.
00:02:45.227 --> 00:02:52.348
We have two people from the Frankfurt plant board with us, exactly Our, our great community partner, the plant board.
00:02:52.348 --> 00:02:53.510
We have Kathy Lindsay.
00:02:53.651 --> 00:02:54.233
Hello, hello.
00:02:54.740 --> 00:02:58.373
Kathy is the PR guru for the plant board.
00:02:58.373 --> 00:02:59.719
I don't know what your actual title is.
00:02:59.800 --> 00:03:01.580
I'm the director of marketing and communication.
00:03:01.659 --> 00:03:04.768
I like PR guru better, but that's okay, that's fine.
00:03:04.788 --> 00:03:06.331
I like director of awesomeness.
00:03:07.401 --> 00:03:09.272
And we have David Columbia with us as well.
00:03:09.393 --> 00:03:10.520
Yes, sir, thank you for having me.
00:03:10.680 --> 00:03:14.430
We are tickled to have both of you here and want to talk again.
00:03:14.430 --> 00:03:23.955
This is, uh, fcs Unscripted is the stories of everyone in Franklin County schools and the plant board is obviously one of our biggest collaborators.
00:03:23.955 --> 00:03:39.623
You work with us throughout the course of the year, showing different events sporting events, music, you know, performances, all kinds of good stuff, and we're so thankful to have you as one of our partners.
00:03:39.623 --> 00:03:44.024
So we want to talk to you and give you an opportunity to kind of talk about what's going on at the plant board.
00:03:44.384 --> 00:03:46.371
Well, first thing I want to say we talk about graduation.
00:03:46.371 --> 00:03:52.114
You know, every year we give out scholarships and so we usually give.
00:03:52.114 --> 00:04:12.322
We give one $2,000 scholarship to each of the three public high schools and I've had the opportunity for the last several years to be a presenter, to present the scholarship at the awards ceremonies or whatever, and it's so fun to be there to see these kids getting this recognition.
00:04:12.322 --> 00:04:17.653
When we have been watching these kids on Cable 10 for years, do their thing.
00:04:18.661 --> 00:04:25.634
And so that is one of the great things about working where I work and working with the crew at Cable 10 and seeing all these students.
00:04:25.634 --> 00:04:32.867
I mean they go through all their high school rites of passage and a lot of times we're there to share it with the community and that's what I love about it.
00:04:32.867 --> 00:04:48.689
And so, just personally, I want to give congratulations and a great job message to all of the seniors, because you're almost at the end of this phase, but really it's just the beginning for you and some of them just can't wait to get to this point.
00:04:48.939 --> 00:04:54.951
But then once they actually get that diploma and leave, then they're like oh, wait a minute now.
00:04:54.951 --> 00:04:57.274
Wait a minute Exactly.
00:04:57.274 --> 00:05:02.860
David, I know you work in the production side of things at the plant board.
00:05:02.860 --> 00:05:07.531
Talk to us about what your role entails and what do you do on a daily basis.
00:05:07.899 --> 00:05:17.632
So I'm the production manager for all of our Cable 10 staff and our advertising staff and on a daily basis we're doing commercials for all of our local businesses in Frankfort.
00:05:17.632 --> 00:05:20.240
That kind of gets lost in all the public things you see us doing.
00:05:20.240 --> 00:05:22.702
That kind of gets lost in all the public things you see us doing.
00:05:22.702 --> 00:05:30.990
That's actually a big chunk of what we do, helping all of our local companies advertise here in town in an affordable way.
00:05:30.990 --> 00:05:40.517
It's something kind of nice that the plant board and the cable system offers businesses in town, but on a day-to-day basis we run around 10.
00:05:40.517 --> 00:05:44.163
We have that three days a week live in our studio.
00:05:44.163 --> 00:05:45.345
It's a big production center.
00:05:45.345 --> 00:05:46.548
All of us are working on it.
00:05:46.869 --> 00:05:50.180
Did you say it's Frankfurt's only live morning show it?
00:05:50.199 --> 00:05:50.502
is Frankfurt's.
00:05:50.502 --> 00:05:51.807
I believe I've heard that a time or two.
00:05:53.521 --> 00:06:06.505
And so there's four full-time production staff that work on it every day, and then there's our manager of media services that works on it, and all of our hosts from different parts of our marketing department and we come together to do that.
00:06:06.505 --> 00:06:11.245
And then all of our sports productions and then the really fun stuff, all the meetings.
00:06:11.485 --> 00:06:16.767
Yes absolutely Isn't that great All the meetings and then coming up all the graduation.
00:06:16.767 --> 00:06:18.425
Now that's exciting.
00:06:19.800 --> 00:06:23.470
The Around 10 show is a great treat for our community.
00:06:23.470 --> 00:06:31.853
I don't know, people maybe take it for granted sometimes that we have a live morning show three days a week.
00:06:31.853 --> 00:06:32.721
That's great.
00:06:32.841 --> 00:06:36.831
And we're coming up on a five-year anniversary, which is ridiculously crazy.
00:06:36.831 --> 00:06:38.144
I can't believe it's been that long.
00:06:38.144 --> 00:06:45.725
And we started out at a point where we were just trying to find content and calling people and saying, oh, you want to come be on the show, you want to come do this or talk about this.
00:06:45.725 --> 00:06:49.850
Now we have people calling us and say I need to come on and talk about this event we're having.
00:06:49.850 --> 00:06:57.242
I need to come on and talk about this program we're doing, and I love that because they're seeing around 10 more and more here in our community.
00:06:57.242 --> 00:07:04.605
It's where people find out where a lot of things are going on and where they're going on and how they can get involved or how they need to register for something.
00:07:04.605 --> 00:07:19.372
And I tell people you know, wherever I go, when I'm in meetings with other, like business organizations or civic clubs, if there's anything that you want our community know, let us know and we'll share.
00:07:19.372 --> 00:07:20.233
We'll help share the word.
00:07:20.713 --> 00:07:23.115
Yeah, I mean, it's such a great resource for our community.
00:07:23.115 --> 00:07:30.898
It's available, obviously, on Channel 10, on the Plant Board Cable Plant Board Cable, channel 10.
00:07:30.898 --> 00:07:32.985
And also on Facebook and our YouTube channel and it is on.
00:07:33.105 --> 00:07:34.490
Facebook and YouTube.
00:07:34.490 --> 00:07:39.432
So you know a lot of and that's another question I wanted to ask you all about.
00:07:39.432 --> 00:07:44.161
You know, it seems like the whole media world is changing quite a bit.
00:07:44.161 --> 00:07:45.687
You know we're seeing this.
00:07:45.687 --> 00:07:54.410
You know, back in back in my day, when we had three channels and the rabbit ears, uh, that was our only way to to get information.
00:07:54.410 --> 00:08:00.596
And now, with with these phones, with the internet, uh, information is at our hands.
00:08:00.596 --> 00:08:05.041
So how does the plant board, how do you kind of adapt to that new world?
00:08:05.041 --> 00:08:08.540
What are some things that you've done to embrace that new technology?
00:08:08.730 --> 00:08:10.658
Well, that's why I have David around.
00:08:10.658 --> 00:08:12.536
David's really good at all this.
00:08:12.536 --> 00:08:14.577
I'm going to brag on him for a minute because I said I would.
00:08:14.577 --> 00:08:22.314
David is somebody who knows about changing technology and he's always, you know, wanting us to get the new thing.
00:08:22.314 --> 00:08:23.956
This is what we need, this is what we need, this is what we need.
00:08:23.956 --> 00:08:28.302
We've got to keep up, we've got to do this, and I say great, let's do it.
00:08:28.302 --> 00:08:30.144
So, david, what kind of stuff are we doing now?
00:08:34.250 --> 00:08:36.029
Yeah, it's definitely a continuously changing environment and it's tough to keep up with.
00:08:36.029 --> 00:08:43.301
You talk about Facebook and YouTube and the cable system and we're really reaching multiple demographics with that.
00:08:43.301 --> 00:08:46.998
The Facebook crowd over the last couple of years has changed.
00:08:46.998 --> 00:08:48.301
It's different.
00:08:48.301 --> 00:08:53.220
The YouTube platform has become kind of the main one for us.
00:08:54.311 --> 00:09:15.217
And the cable system is obviously our backbone and we still have all our cable subscribers that are hitting that and I've told I kind of joke with Kathy every once in a while I'll say you know, I like to have the newest things within our budget, sure, and you know, even recording a podcast like, oh, these are some cool stuff, I want to look at it and touch all the push, all the buttons here, yep.
00:09:15.217 --> 00:09:33.577
But you know, it's just like we have and it's like to put it in perspective everything in our studio, everything in our mobile production truck, everything we have costs less than one camera set up for an ESPN show.
00:09:33.698 --> 00:09:34.200
That's wild.
00:09:34.841 --> 00:09:36.851
Yeah, so to put that in perspective for you.
00:09:37.133 --> 00:09:38.557
He doesn't know how to do things on a budget.
00:09:38.616 --> 00:09:44.822
Well, you got to right, you just have to, and much like in the world of education is changing.
00:09:44.822 --> 00:09:52.669
I think COVID changed everything for the whole world and from an education perspective, we saw how things can be a little bit different.
00:09:52.669 --> 00:10:19.546
You know, some of our students really thrived in that virtual setting and for some students, sitting in rows with 27 other students every single day isn't the best way for them to learn, and so we've had to adapt, not just in Franklin County schools, but across the country and across the Commonwealth offering virtual schools, e-school and things like that.
00:10:19.546 --> 00:10:27.234
So either you adapt or die right, and I think that's, you know, important for education.
00:10:27.234 --> 00:10:29.078
Obviously it's important for you guys.
00:10:29.078 --> 00:10:39.376
Anything else you want to talk about in terms of the plant board and and all of the wonderful projects you have going on and, by the way, I want to brag on the plant board real quick, just from a personal perspective.
00:10:39.376 --> 00:10:42.822
We now have the next band internet.
00:10:42.822 --> 00:10:44.225
Yes, holy cow.
00:10:44.466 --> 00:10:44.966
It's good.
00:10:45.246 --> 00:10:45.827
It's amazing.
00:10:45.889 --> 00:10:47.174
I've had it and I love it.
00:10:47.174 --> 00:10:48.178
It's a great service.
00:10:48.178 --> 00:10:56.941
It's Frankfort's fiber service that we have here through the Frankfort Plant Board and if it is available in your area, I highly recommend you check it out.
00:10:56.961 --> 00:10:57.241
Yes.
00:10:58.129 --> 00:10:58.931
I'm interested in that.
00:10:59.211 --> 00:10:59.431
I did.
00:10:59.431 --> 00:11:05.876
You know, we used to have where the picture would be a little blurry, you know, when you're streaming something.
00:11:05.876 --> 00:11:14.764
We upgraded to NextBand and we did a speed test before and it would be like 20 or 40, whatever mega, whatever's right.
00:11:14.764 --> 00:11:17.767
I did a speed test last night it was 930.
00:11:17.767 --> 00:11:19.688
There you go.
00:11:19.688 --> 00:11:21.330
Yes, that's awesome.
00:11:21.330 --> 00:11:25.522
Well then, we're going to shift gears, gears, and we're going to do some fun facts.
00:11:25.522 --> 00:11:29.057
All right, so these are fun facts for both of you.
00:11:29.057 --> 00:11:32.773
We'll start with david on the first one, and these are you're not prepared for this.
00:11:32.773 --> 00:11:33.995
I'm not, and that's okay.
00:11:33.995 --> 00:11:36.763
What is your favorite breakfast cereal?
00:11:37.650 --> 00:11:42.754
uh, reese's peanut butter puffs oh man, I was not expecting that.
00:11:42.754 --> 00:11:45.116
Yeah, peanut butter and milk.
00:11:45.116 --> 00:11:46.759
I don't know man, I'm weird.
00:11:46.818 --> 00:11:48.240
I really love chocolate for breakfast.
00:11:48.240 --> 00:11:49.181
I'm with you.
00:11:49.181 --> 00:11:52.524
Mine was going to be the peanut butter cat and crunch.
00:11:52.764 --> 00:11:53.884
Well, it is yours.
00:11:53.884 --> 00:11:54.645
That's your question.
00:11:54.645 --> 00:11:55.125
Oh, okay.
00:11:55.447 --> 00:11:56.506
Peanut butter or cat and crunch.
00:11:57.030 --> 00:11:59.876
Now doesn't the cat and crunch like, destroy the roof of your mouth.
00:11:59.897 --> 00:12:00.918
It does, yeah, the roof of your mouth.
00:12:00.938 --> 00:12:01.019
Yeah.
00:12:01.038 --> 00:12:01.559
Yeah, yeah, okay.
00:12:01.941 --> 00:12:03.403
All right, Kathy, you get the next question.
00:12:03.403 --> 00:12:06.695
What is your all time favorite movie?
00:12:08.618 --> 00:12:09.600
Oh gosh, that's hard.
00:12:09.600 --> 00:12:12.684
Yeah, it is Well just sentimental.
00:12:12.684 --> 00:12:16.078
My all time favorite movie is parenthood with Steve Martin.
00:12:16.318 --> 00:12:17.461
Oh, that's a good one yeah.
00:12:17.629 --> 00:12:22.634
Cause I am all about family and that's a great movie about family and different facets of families.
00:12:22.654 --> 00:12:23.875
Yeah, all right, david, what about you?
00:12:24.355 --> 00:12:25.437
I'd say Good Will.
00:12:25.477 --> 00:12:27.399
Hunting, oh excellent.
00:12:28.000 --> 00:12:28.721
Dives a little deep.
00:12:29.020 --> 00:12:29.782
Do you like apples?
00:12:29.782 --> 00:12:31.123
How about them?
00:12:31.123 --> 00:12:31.562
Apples?
00:12:31.562 --> 00:12:32.845
Yeah, great.
00:12:32.845 --> 00:12:34.505
All right, david, you get the next one.
00:12:34.505 --> 00:12:38.860
What is your?
00:12:38.879 --> 00:12:39.304
favorite food.
00:12:39.304 --> 00:12:41.490
Overall, that's a tough one.
00:12:44.155 --> 00:12:49.163
See, when I ask the kids this question when they're in here, it's either chicken fingers, mac and cheese or pizza.
00:12:49.224 --> 00:12:53.679
It's pretty simple it might be one of those, or all of those together.
00:12:53.679 --> 00:12:56.772
Yeah, I'll have to go mac and cheese.
00:12:57.092 --> 00:12:58.676
Mac and cheese, all right, solid.
00:12:59.197 --> 00:13:02.001
Chocolate Easy Chocolate Yep, all right, that's food right, yeah Okay.
00:13:02.001 --> 00:13:03.384
Chocolate Easy Chocolate Yep, all right, that's food right, yeah Okay.
00:13:03.404 --> 00:13:11.100
The last question, Kathy what is your favorite either band or musical performer?
00:13:11.822 --> 00:13:12.322
Billy Joel.
00:13:12.663 --> 00:13:14.596
Ooh, I mean you were ready for that.
00:13:14.649 --> 00:13:15.714

00:13:15.995 --> 00:13:16.577
All right, David.
00:13:17.629 --> 00:13:18.975

00:13:22.695 --> 00:13:23.696
They were pretty big.
00:13:23.897 --> 00:13:24.837
Well, both of you were wrong.
00:13:24.837 --> 00:13:27.001
The answer is you too, oh, but anyway.
00:13:27.823 --> 00:13:28.485
