Hackers Don’t Want Your Data Anymore (They Want This)

Jon: We've spent most of the past month talking about the upside of AI, the agents, the swarms, the productivity gains, but this week we have to talk about the drain. In the cybersecurity world of 2024, hackers wanted your customers' credit card numbers. In 2025, they wanted your internal strategy documents. But in mid-2026, there's a new prize that is far more liquid, impossible to trace, and for some companies far more expensive. Your enterprise AI tokens. We are witnessing the explosion of the shadow API market. Attackers aren't just looking for data anymore, they're looking for compute. They're hijacking your unlimited tier access to flagship models and reselling that access to thousands of other users through sophisticated relay services. You're paying the bill for a thousand person agent swarm, but half of those agents are actually malicious scripts running on a server in a jurisdiction you can't even find on a map. Today we're looking at CLI Proxy, the platform that turns your stolen enterprise credentials into a global commodity. Now, let's get into it. Hello everyone, and welcome back to Execution Over Hype, the podcast where we cut through the AI noise to talk about the actual plumbing of the 2026 Enterprise. I'm your host, John Turns, and today's episode is presented by Saison. Before we deconstruct the architecture of the token drainer, I want to invite you to join our community. In 2026, security isn't an IT cost, it's a margin protector. If you want the blueprint for an identity-bound compute strategy that ensures every dollar of your AI budget stays within your four walls, please hit the subscribe button and like this video. Let's talk about the tool at the center of this storm, CLI Proxy API. It started as a clever tool for developers to wrap CLI-based AI models into open AI compatible endpoints, but in the hands of the shadow market, it has become a weapon of compute theft. The technical trick here is fragmented routing. When a hacker gets a hold of an enterprise token, let's say for a global unlimited plan, they don't just dump it into a botnet. That would trigger a rate limit alarm at the provider level in seconds. Instead, they use a CLI proxy relay to split that one token's capacity across 10,000 different micro users. The proxy uses OAuth flows to make every single request look like a unique, legitimate login. To the AI provider, OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google, it looks like 10,000 different people asking 10,000 simple questions. The shadow providers aren't just using your key. They're using a pool of stolen keys from 50 different companies. They use a round robin strategy and their config.yaml to rotate which key is being taxed for a specific request. This keeps the dwell time high. You might lose $200 an hour. Which is small enough to hide in your monthly 500k compute bill, but over a year, it's a massive hemorrhage. Here's the hype reality check. These shadow sites are selling access to flagship models at 38% of the original price. They're literally using your enterprise discount to underbid the legitimate providers. At Saison, we tell our clients an API key is a liability, not an identity. If your developers are still hard-coding unlimited keys into environment variables, You are essentially leaving a blank check on the sidewalk. The strategy for 2026 is identity bound compute. This is a framework we've pioneered to stop the drain. We have moved away from permanent keys. Every worker agent in your swarm must request a JWT, which is a JSON web token, that expires every 60 minutes. To get a new one, the agent must pass a behavioral proof of work, verifying that its recent activity matches its defined job description. Most rate limits are based on volume. We've changed that to value. If an agent that is supposed to be doing HR summaries suddenly starts asking for code refactoring or network topology, the Saison Shield freezes the token instantly. We implement a tiered kill switch. If we detect a low and slow drain, we don't just shut off the key because that'll alert the hacker. Instead, we throttle and deceive. We start returning low quality model responses to the proxy while we trace the OAuth origin point. In 2026, if you aren't auditing your API traffic daily, you aren't running a business, you're running a charity for hackers. Now it's time for the tech reality score. Let's put the current state of the shadow market defenses to the test. Ease of use, 6 out of 10. These tools, like SALT Security and F5 ADSP, are powerful but complex. You can't just set and forget them. You need a SecOps team that understands the difference between a token refresh and a token hijack. Functionality 9 out of 10. The new machine identity mapping features are game changers. We can now see exactly which specific server instance in our cloud is leaking compute in real time. Integrations, 8 out of 10. These tools plug directly into Snowflake and NetSuite to correlate compute cost with business value. If the cost goes up but the invoices process doesn't, you know you have a drain on your hands. Value for cost, 10 out of 10. One major breach can cost millions in compute overages alone. These platforms pay for themselves by catching the micro leaks that add up to seven figures. Scalability, seven out of ten. As you scale to a thousand plus agents, the identity handshake tax can add a few milliseconds of latency. It's a price you have to be willing to pay. Final score forty out of fifty. The final verdict, execution ready. If you are moving to an agenic workforce, you cannot afford to skip the compute perimeter. The takeaway for today is simple. Your AI budget is the new frontier of corporate theft. Every dollar wasted on a shadow proxy is a dollar taken away from your RD and your competitive advantage. It says on we don't just build the AI, we build the vault. We ensure that your data is sovereign, your tokens are bound. And your compute is protected. Visit Saison.com and let's run an audit on your API gateway before your next billing cycle. If you're ready to stop the drain and start the execution, please like and subscribe. Until next time, I'm John Turns. Out.
