00:00:00.017 -->
00:00:03.357Hi, this is Aurora from the Educating All Learners Alliance,
00:00:03.637 -->
00:00:07.337and today we're speaking to Michelle Soriano for 5 Minutes with CAS.
00:00:07.757 -->
00:00:12.477CAS is a non-profit education and research development organization that created
00:00:12.477 -->
00:00:16.957the Universal Design for Learning, or UDL, framework to make learning more inclusive.
00:00:17.297 -->
00:00:21.857CAS is dedicated to creating inclusive educational environments through UDL
00:00:21.857 -->
00:00:24.177and innovative accessibility solutions.
00:00:25.057 -->
00:00:29.537The CASS Accessibility Solutions team specializes in helping institutions integrate
00:00:29.537 -->
00:00:33.437accessible technologies and materials, ensuring that all learners have equal
00:00:33.437 -->
00:00:34.657opportunities to succeed.
00:00:35.137 -->
00:00:38.897Joining us today is Michelle Soriano. She's a professional learning specialist
00:00:38.897 -->
00:00:43.517on the accessibility team at CASS, who is passionate about all things inclusive
00:00:43.517 -->
00:00:44.897and accessible education.
00:00:45.417 -->
00:00:47.797Great to have you here today, Michelle. Thanks for joining us.
00:00:48.417 -->
00:00:53.917Thank you so much. I am so excited to be here. I love everything ILA and talking
00:00:53.917 -->
00:00:55.517everything inclusive practices.
00:00:55.937 -->
00:00:59.877I love that energy. And I love some of the other interviews that I've seen you
00:00:59.877 -->
00:01:01.897do with with Cass around this topic.
00:01:02.097 -->
00:01:06.537So let's dive right in and, you know, tell us more in your own words about your
00:01:06.537 -->
00:01:07.917organization and the work that you're doing.
00:01:08.654 -->
00:01:14.894Yeah, absolutely. So I am a professional learning specialist on the accessibility team at CAST.
00:01:15.094 -->
00:01:19.294And as you mentioned, CAST, we are the founders of Universal Design for Learning.
00:01:19.514 -->
00:01:25.454But the great thing about my role is that you cannot have Universal Design for
00:01:25.454 -->
00:01:26.554Learning without accessibility.
00:01:27.214 -->
00:01:33.454And so I get the opportunity to really support educators and agencies in really
00:01:33.454 -->
00:01:38.114understanding what is accessibility, why does it matter, and how do you do it?
00:01:38.654 -->
00:01:42.734I love that. But that's not to say that there aren't challenges and issues facing
00:01:42.734 -->
00:01:45.634us in the world of education today. It feels like, you know,
00:01:45.714 -->
00:01:49.174we've got a lot of uphill challenges. So what would you say have a big issue,
00:01:49.394 -->
00:01:52.674the main issue that you feel like CAST is trying to tackle right now?
00:01:52.894 -->
00:01:56.694Well, the main issue, and I'm going to speak specifically about our accessibility
00:01:56.694 -->
00:01:59.634to CAST, because CAST has so many different departments.
00:01:59.954 -->
00:02:03.194But I will tell you, leading on that you don't know what you don't know,
00:02:03.374 -->
00:02:05.994and keeping up with the compliance pieces,
00:02:06.194 -->
00:02:11.994the mandates of accessibility, There is the Department of Justice Title II of
00:02:11.994 -->
00:02:15.294ADA updates that were released in April of 2024.
00:02:15.734 -->
00:02:20.874And I would say that this right now is a big focal point for educators across
00:02:20.874 -->
00:02:24.914the world because it mandates that all of our websites,
00:02:25.314 -->
00:02:29.734all of our mobile apps, everything has to be compliant with the web content
00:02:29.734 -->
00:02:30.994accessibility guidelines.
00:02:31.594 -->
00:02:37.774And a lot of people say, so what is that? How do we know what that means? What do we do?
00:02:37.974 -->
00:02:40.154Is that one more thing that we have to initiate?
00:02:40.514 -->
00:02:42.374And so just being able to...
00:02:43.160 -->
00:02:48.340Be down to earth, be real, help people understand what do we mean when we say
00:02:48.340 -->
00:02:52.800web content accessibility guidelines are WCAG.
00:02:52.920 -->
00:02:57.200And how can I take that information and implement it into my role,
00:02:57.400 -->
00:03:01.380my organization, my agency has been a big goal of ours.
00:03:01.540 -->
00:03:05.580And so just meeting everybody where they are and helping them grow together
00:03:05.580 -->
00:03:12.940so that we can make things more accessible and inclusive and universal for all of our learners.
00:03:13.160 -->
00:03:16.400What are some of the big wins you've had through this work?
00:03:17.098 -->
00:03:21.778You know, every small win is a big win in my eyes, and I know the eyes of Cass,
00:03:21.898 -->
00:03:24.418because we have to celebrate every single moment.
00:03:24.958 -->
00:03:30.778We've done a lot of work around systems change with state agencies and other education agencies.
00:03:30.978 -->
00:03:35.078And I will say that a big win is, one, getting everybody to meet together,
00:03:35.418 -->
00:03:39.938come up with common language and understanding, but then building that to where
00:03:39.938 -->
00:03:42.598it's scaling into making changes in policies,
00:03:42.838 -->
00:03:47.038making sure that when we're looking at written guidelines, when we're looking
00:03:47.038 -->
00:03:50.718at how we're implementing things, that we have accessibility at the forefront,
00:03:51.278 -->
00:03:55.478when we're purchasing curriculum, that we're thinking about accessibility as
00:03:55.478 -->
00:04:00.278we're going through that process so that we're spending money appropriately
00:04:00.278 -->
00:04:04.538and effectively and we're getting resources and materials that every single
00:04:04.538 -->
00:04:07.918child can leverage and use and be successful with.
00:04:08.038 -->
00:04:11.178So how can folks get involved or stay informed?
00:04:11.638 -->
00:04:15.778You know, how can folks access some of this awesome work that you're doing. Oh, yeah.
00:04:16.238 -->
00:04:21.278Well, if you want to reach out, friends, you can email us at AEM,
