WCPT 820 Interview: Lisa Stark and Ian Cameron

Richard Chew is joined by Ian Cameron, former ABC News producer and executive producer, and Lisa Stark, former ABC News reporter. They discuss the current state of media fragmentation, corporate pressure, and threats to editorial independence.

The State of Modern Media

- Traditional media outlets struggle to provide fair views while competing with online organizations looking for engagement.
- The conversation highlights how news organizations must navigate a landscape filled with intense political polarization and many competing issues.

Journalism as Referee and Entertainment
- Richard says Abby Phillip's CNN show "is designed to be a little bit of a a fist fight," and that often plays referee.
- Cameron notes that some political guests on such shows may prioritize entertainment over serious discourse.
- Discussion touches upon the history of cable news, with specific mention given to how previous debate shows like "Crossfire" eventually struggled because people tired of televised shouting matches.

Protecting Press Freedom at Events
- Stark explains her efforts alongside Cameron to support freedom of the press through various initiatives.
- They describe their disappointment regarding the White House Correspondents' Dinner, where they requested journalists use their platform to address administration pressure.
- Cameron suggests that some press organizations take a defensive stance rather than actively pushing back against political intimidation.
- The group discusses the risk of "submission" when news organizations prioritize access over editorial independence.

Corporate Pushback and Legal Battles
- They discuss Disney's response to pressure regarding Jimmy Kimmel's show being pulled from the air.
- Stark expresses satisfaction that Disney is suing the FCC following massive viewer feedback and concerns about station licenses.
- This situation is viewed as a potential template for how corporations can defend their content against political interference.

Threats to Stars and Stripes' Independence
- Cameron details the recent loss of editorial independence at Stars and Stripes, a publication historically independent despite its Pentagon funding.
- He notes several recent developments at the publication, including bans on wire service news, comics, and the firing of key personnel like the editor-in-chief and publisher for insubordination.
- Stark asserts that these actions appear aimed at securing Pentagon control over content, such as reporting on military hardships abroad.
- They express concern that this rapid erosion of autonomy threatens a vital information source for millions of military members.
