MENGENAI EPISOD INI
At 3:15 AM on June 22, 1941, three million men crossed a river. In the next six months, more human beings would die than in any comparable period in recorded history. This is the story of Operation Barbarossa—the largest military operation ever conducted.
We begin in Hitler's alpine retreat, where a failed artist signs a directive that will determine the fate of continents. We trace the twisted logic of Lebensraum back to its origins: the cramped apartment in Linz, the rejection from Vienna's Academy of Fine Arts, the revelation in a tuberculosis ward where a young man first encountered the conspiracy theories that would cost fifty million lives.
Then we meet Stalin. A seminary dropout from Georgia who murdered his way to absolute power, then turned that paranoia inward. His Great Purge executed 35,000 of his own officers—including three of five marshals, thirteen of fifteen army commanders, and fifty of fifty-seven corps commanders. When German tanks crossed the border, the Red Army was led by survivors chosen for loyalty over competence.
The invasion unfolds with horrifying precision. German pincers close around entire Soviet armies. At Kiev alone, 600,000 soldiers surrender in a single encirclement—the largest mass capture in military history. But what happened next was unprecedented: within eight months, three million Soviet POWs were dead. Not from combat. From deliberate starvation, exposure, and execution. The Wehrmacht wasn't just fighting a war. It was conducting an extermination.
At Babi Yar, a ravine outside Kiev, 33,771 Jewish men, women, and children were shot in two days. The executioners took breaks for lunch.
Then came the rain. The rasputitsa—the "time without roads"—turned the Soviet Union into a sea of mud that swallowed tanks whole. Then came the cold. German soldiers, equipped for a summer campaign that was supposed to end by October, froze in their foxholes while their weapons seized and their vehicles refused to start.
On December 5, 1941, German reconnaissance units could see the spires of the Kremlin. They were twelve miles from Moscow. They would never get closer. That night, temperatures dropped to minus forty. The next morning, one million fresh Soviet troops—transferred from Siberia after intelligence confirmed Japan wouldn't attack—launched a counteroffensive that would push the Wehrmacht back two hundred miles.
Operation Barbarossa was supposed to last six weeks. It lasted four years. Twenty-seven million Soviets died. The Eastern Front consumed 80% of German military casualties. And in those frozen fields outside Moscow, the thousand-year Reich began its long march toward the bunker in Berlin.
A journey through the deadliest military campaign in human history, and the hubris that convinced one man he could conquer a nation of 170 million people in a single summer.
