00:00:00.640 --> 00:00:05.839
This week on Beyond the Headlines, Johnson County Fair crowns the 2026 Fair Queen.
00:00:06.080 --> 00:00:09.439
Argersville considers speed limit changes for golf cart safety.
00:00:09.679 --> 00:00:15.599
20 years later, Franklin remembers Blake and China Dickus, and kids cheer what it takes to be a 4-H tur.
00:00:16.800 --> 00:00:23.600
From the Daily Journal, this is Beyond the Headlines, a local news podcast focused on story shaping Johnson County.
00:00:40.799 --> 00:00:41.359
Pretty good.
00:00:41.600 --> 00:00:43.600
Very glad it's a little less hot out today.
00:00:43.759 --> 00:00:46.000
Yes, it's uh it's been it's fair week.
00:00:46.079 --> 00:00:48.079
It's been uh a little hot yesterday.
00:00:48.240 --> 00:00:49.920
Uh, you know, the weather wasn't bad.
00:00:50.000 --> 00:00:54.079
Uh we're filming this on uh Thursday, so I was out there Wednesday.
00:00:54.320 --> 00:01:00.560
Um and yeah, the weather wasn't bad, but it's it's been a busy week, lots of lot of fair stuff going on.
00:01:00.719 --> 00:01:03.759
So uh and this is have you covered a fair before?
00:01:04.079 --> 00:01:13.040
Not this fun, but I'm excited to get out there hopefully Saturday and spend some time out exploring, seeing the animal auction, and maybe trying a few things.
00:01:13.280 --> 00:01:13.840
Yeah, yeah.
00:01:14.000 --> 00:01:17.040
It'll uh it's definitely uh a fun fair to cover.
00:01:17.120 --> 00:01:18.480
Everyone's so nice there.
00:01:18.640 --> 00:01:23.040
Um, so but yeah, we have some fair news uh we've been keeping up with.
00:01:23.120 --> 00:01:27.200
Uh and they elected um the 2026 fair queen.
00:01:27.280 --> 00:01:28.400
So let's talk a little bit about that.
00:01:28.719 --> 00:01:34.560
Ainsley Botkin was crowned Miss Johnson County 2026 at Sunday's pageant held at McCarty Mulch Indoor Arena.
00:01:34.879 --> 00:01:40.400
Botkin also earned the title of Miss Congeniality, showing she was a favorite among judges and fellow contestants.
00:01:40.640 --> 00:01:46.079
Ten young women competed for the crown, with Addie Morris, the 2025 Queen, passing the title.
00:01:46.239 --> 00:01:51.920
Other members of the Queen's court were Hale Chadwell, Morgan Keith, Charlie Kramer, and Chloe Farmer.
00:01:52.239 --> 00:01:52.400
Yeah.
00:01:52.560 --> 00:01:54.799
So a lot of women were vying for this crown.
00:01:54.879 --> 00:01:56.879
So, um, and Ainsley took it home.
00:01:57.040 --> 00:01:59.599
So uh tell us a little bit about uh Ainsley Botkin.
00:01:59.920 --> 00:02:00.159
Yeah.
00:02:00.319 --> 00:02:04.560
So Botkin is a Franklin Community High School grad and will be a sophomore at the University of St.
00:02:04.640 --> 00:02:05.200
Francis.
00:02:05.359 --> 00:02:08.960
She's currently studying to become a cardiovascular surgical technician.
00:02:09.759 --> 00:02:14.879
She has deep Johnson County roots, um, and her family was among the county's earliest settlers.
00:02:15.039 --> 00:02:19.120
So she grew up involved in 4H and spent a lot of time in the sheep farm.
00:02:19.360 --> 00:02:19.919
That's awesome.
00:02:20.159 --> 00:02:20.560
Yeah.
00:02:20.800 --> 00:02:27.199
She also said she was inspired by previous Fair Queens, and she wanted to continue their legacy of determination, leadership, and kindness.
00:02:27.439 --> 00:02:28.319
Oh, that's so nice.
00:02:28.400 --> 00:02:28.639
Yeah.
00:02:28.719 --> 00:02:40.879
I was um I was talking with a former fair queen uh yesterday, and uh just about the process, and it's all um the whole experience kind of brings a a sisterhood as well, um, amongst the contestants as well.
00:02:41.039 --> 00:02:41.199
Yeah.
00:02:41.360 --> 00:02:46.000
Um, but something new this year, uh the contestants were able to give speeches.
00:02:46.080 --> 00:02:47.759
So uh what did Ainsley say?
00:02:48.080 --> 00:02:53.919
So Ainsley's speech focused on her cherished fair memories and the importance of the Johnson County Fair to the community.
00:02:54.080 --> 00:03:02.319
Um, preparation for the speech included daily speech practice, mock interviews, stage rehearsals, and building confidence and poise.
00:03:02.560 --> 00:03:09.360
And, you know, you mentioned that sisterhood fellow contestants emphasized their strong sense of friendship and sisterhood throughout the competition.
00:03:09.520 --> 00:03:14.400
Yeah, so they were cheering for each other backstage, and it sounds like they had a really good sense of camaraderie.
00:03:14.560 --> 00:03:15.280
Oh, yeah, absolutely.
00:03:15.360 --> 00:03:16.879
And I I could see it um being there.
00:03:16.960 --> 00:03:24.319
I've covered uh fairs before, and you kind of see that camaraderie build um, you know, during the competition, but also throughout the fair, too.
00:03:24.400 --> 00:03:28.080
So it's it's kind of it's a kind of a fun thing to witness as well.
00:03:28.240 --> 00:03:31.840
So, but um, what was her reaction when she found out that she won?
00:03:32.319 --> 00:03:40.159
So she said she was shocked when her number was announced as the winner, and she credited her faith and the support of fellow contestants for helping her succeed.
00:03:40.319 --> 00:03:45.360
Um, her parents also expressed a lot of pride in her accomplishments and the hard work that she put into the competition.
00:03:45.680 --> 00:03:46.240
That's awesome.
00:03:46.319 --> 00:03:47.280
Yeah, well, that's great.
00:03:47.360 --> 00:03:49.599
And congratulations to Ainsley Votkin.
00:03:49.840 --> 00:03:54.719
Um, you know, uh it's always nice to cover a fair uh fair queen each year.
00:03:54.800 --> 00:03:57.360
So uh, and they all have something different to say.
00:03:57.439 --> 00:03:58.400
So that's great.
00:03:58.560 --> 00:04:03.919
We have some more news for you, uh, not fair related, but just uh what's going on around Johnson County.
00:04:04.080 --> 00:04:13.039
So uh Bargersville officials are considering new speed limit changes aimed at improving traffic safety and expanding golf cart access to downtown amenities.
00:04:13.199 --> 00:04:16.399
Now, golf carts are becoming increasingly popular as well, too.
00:04:16.639 --> 00:04:27.920
So uh this proposed was introduced at the July 14th town council meeting and was still uh and it still needs to go through a public hearing and second uh reading before it uh before it's adopted.
00:04:28.079 --> 00:04:36.639
So uh town leaders say the plan is part of a broader effort to improve mobility, neighborhood connectivity, and safe access throughout the community.
00:04:36.800 --> 00:04:46.319
A lot of um a lot of the suburban neighborhoods in uh Bargersville uh don't really have a connective trail to go uh to downtown.
00:04:46.480 --> 00:04:48.480
So this is kind of their way to do that.
00:04:48.639 --> 00:05:02.639
Under current rules, golf carts are allowed on town streets with speed limits of 30 miles per hour or less, and golf cards are not permitted on sidewalks, trails, State Road 135, or Old Planck Road, unless you're crossing at an intersection.
00:05:03.040 --> 00:05:07.839
So, Erica, what are the proposed speed limit changes and where could they be implemented?
00:05:08.079 --> 00:05:26.560
So proposed speed limit reductions to 30 miles per hour includes County Road 144 from Renion Road to Schoolhouse Lane, Saddle Club Road from Hunt Club Parkway and New Battle Lane to County Road 144, and Morgantown Road from County Road 144 to Whiteland Road.
00:05:26.720 --> 00:05:33.839
Other segments would be adjusted to 40 miles uh per hour to create a more gradual transition within the town, too.
00:05:34.079 --> 00:05:36.319
And so what did the council say about this proposal?
00:05:36.399 --> 00:05:38.319
Like, are they all pretty excited about it?
00:05:38.399 --> 00:05:39.519
Is this something that they want?
00:05:39.759 --> 00:05:42.720
Well, not all the council members are on board with this, actually.
00:05:42.800 --> 00:05:49.920
So, council member Ruth Amore, uh, she expressed uh concern for drivers coming over the hills that could collide with golf carts.
00:05:50.000 --> 00:05:51.920
She even said that it gives her nightmares.
00:05:52.160 --> 00:06:01.759
Um, you know, County Road uh being at least on that stretch, uh a lot of people don't follow the speed limit through there, uh, just because it's a long stretch of road.
00:06:01.920 --> 00:06:13.120
And also, uh town manager Dax Norton said golf carts are already heavily traveling County Road 144, and the slowing traffic near Kephard Park is a major motivation behind this proposal as well.
00:06:13.360 --> 00:06:23.199
Um, police chief Todd Bertram said enforcement will be needed to get uh drivers to adjust to lower speeds, but the transition should not overly be disruptive.
00:06:23.360 --> 00:06:37.600
Uh but uh the data that was provided to me at least uh that at least five crashes in the last year occurred uh in the County Road 144 area and nearby roads with um and also numerous traffic stops as well.
00:06:38.000 --> 00:06:49.360
So the council is still gonna continue looking at this to balance the two priorities for more um accessibility for golf carts, um, while also addressing uh safety concerns as well.
00:06:49.600 --> 00:06:50.000
Yeah.
00:06:50.160 --> 00:06:54.480
Well, it sounds like the council has a lot to consider before they vote on this again.
00:06:54.720 --> 00:06:55.040
Yeah.
00:06:55.279 --> 00:06:58.480
And uh, you know, there's golf carts everywhere.
00:06:58.720 --> 00:07:02.079
So this is just another way to keep them safe, I guess.
00:07:02.319 --> 00:07:05.360
So yeah, we're gonna take a quick break and be right back.
00:07:05.680 --> 00:07:09.120

And we're back.
00:07:19.839 --> 00:07:21.759
Um, and we have some more news for you.
00:07:21.920 --> 00:07:28.480
There was uh a very um a very nice memorial uh service earlier this week.
00:07:28.639 --> 00:07:32.560
Um, and Kirsten, you want to tell us a little bit more about uh about that?
00:07:32.879 --> 00:07:33.279
Yeah.
00:07:33.519 --> 00:07:42.560
The Franklin community um gathered Saturday at Needham Elementary School to honor Blake and China Dickus, whose murders remain unsolved nearly 20 years later.
00:07:42.800 --> 00:07:43.120
Yeah.
00:07:43.439 --> 00:07:52.720
This is uh something I've uh I believe we've been covering um from what I've been told uh for a while, um, and something that still remains unsolved.
00:07:52.800 --> 00:07:57.920
And with it being its 20-year anniversary, uh they kind of made this memorial a little more special.
00:07:58.240 --> 00:07:58.720
Yeah.
00:07:59.040 --> 00:08:03.920
Yeah, it sounds like you know, the focus was really on trying to remember Blake and China Dickus.
00:08:04.160 --> 00:08:08.800
Um, participants carried blue balloons and they released butterflies around Blake's memorial tree.
00:08:09.199 --> 00:08:13.519
So their goal was to remember the lives of both victims rather than the tragedy itself.
00:08:13.839 --> 00:08:14.959
Yeah, that's very nice.
00:08:15.199 --> 00:08:20.399
Well, um, you know, just for uh context, what uh what happened to Yeah.
00:08:20.480 --> 00:08:28.240
So on July 24th, 2026, 10-year-old Blake Dickus and his stepmother China were murdered in their Franklin home in the Brannigan Woods neighborhood.
00:08:28.480 --> 00:08:33.519
The case remains active, and Franklin police continue to investigate, according to the Franklin police chief.
00:08:33.679 --> 00:08:40.080
In the months surrounding the murders, several nearby homes were burglarized in a similar manner, though no arrests have been made in the homicide case.
00:08:40.399 --> 00:08:41.440
Wow, that's crazy.
00:08:41.600 --> 00:08:46.559
Um, and I know during the memorial a lot of um a lot of people, family members spoke as well.
00:08:46.720 --> 00:08:49.600
So um, share a little bit about what they had to say about them.
00:08:50.159 --> 00:08:51.120
Yeah, absolutely.
00:08:51.279 --> 00:08:57.759
So Blake's mother, Christina Dickas, spoke about the impact of losing her son and the pain of living without answers for two decades.
00:08:58.320 --> 00:09:04.720
She described Blake as a joyful kid who loved riding his bike, eating pancakes, going to Pizza King, and camping with family.
00:09:05.600 --> 00:09:15.039
She reflected on the life that Blake never got the chance to live, which included milestones such as graduating high school, um, getting married, and entering adulthood.
00:09:15.519 --> 00:09:20.399
Family members also honored China's love and devotion to Blake, noting that she cared really deeply about him.
00:09:21.039 --> 00:09:27.279
And then speakers also encouraged the community to remember Blake not for the way he died, but for the kind, energetic child he was while he lived.
00:09:27.600 --> 00:09:34.480
Well, he sounds like a very nice kid, you know, uh just from uh the speech that they gave and you know how they described him.
00:09:34.559 --> 00:09:37.600
So and this case still remains insult, too, right?
00:09:37.919 --> 00:09:38.240
Yes.
00:09:38.399 --> 00:09:44.960
Um actually there's a$25,000 reward that is still available for any information that leads to an arrest.
00:09:45.039 --> 00:09:51.200
Um and anonymous tips can be submitted by calling 317-346-1100.
00:09:51.759 --> 00:09:58.559
Yeah, if anyone has any information about that, um, like you said, this has been 20 years since they've uh tragically passed.
00:09:58.720 --> 00:10:03.840
So um if anyone has any information, uh, you know, there's still a tip line available.
00:10:04.080 --> 00:10:04.879
So yeah.
00:10:05.360 --> 00:10:08.399
And I think it's good that they keep the uh their memories alive.
00:10:08.480 --> 00:10:09.440
So I think so.
00:10:09.519 --> 00:10:12.879
It sounds like it was a beautiful memorial service with the butterflies and balloons.
00:10:13.039 --> 00:10:13.840
Yeah, absolutely.
00:10:14.000 --> 00:10:14.240
Yeah.
00:10:14.480 --> 00:10:17.919
Well, we're gonna take a quick break and uh be back with our round table.
00:10:18.320 --> 00:10:21.200
Like listening to this podcast, you can help support it.

00:10:33.679 --> 00:10:35.360
And we're back with our round table.
00:10:35.440 --> 00:10:38.320
We got some more uh fair stuff going on.
00:10:38.480 --> 00:10:41.759
Um, but yeah, we've you know been out and about.
00:10:41.840 --> 00:10:44.159
Uh, you know, I always love covering the fair.
00:10:44.240 --> 00:10:46.159
I love the food side of it too.
00:10:46.320 --> 00:10:50.399
So uh what's your favorite thing about uh fairs in general?
00:10:50.559 --> 00:10:54.799
So I know you've uh you've covered some before, yeah, um, but you haven't covered this one.
00:10:54.879 --> 00:10:57.039
So what makes uh this one a little different?
00:10:57.279 --> 00:11:03.600
You know, I'm I'm really excited to see which fair food our intern Nathan really likes the best.
00:11:03.679 --> 00:11:03.840
Yeah.
00:11:04.080 --> 00:11:09.919
So after he uh finishes with his taste test, I might go out and try some of his recommendations.
00:11:10.159 --> 00:11:11.440
Oh yeah, that's a good idea.
00:11:11.600 --> 00:11:23.200
So for um the those that might not know, we uh are working on a video, it might already be up by then, um, about uh we're having our intern Nathan go out and try some different fair food.
00:11:23.279 --> 00:11:26.639
So he's kind of our like our um our guinea pig.
00:11:26.799 --> 00:11:28.240
Yeah, he's our guinea pig.
00:11:28.399 --> 00:11:30.559
Um so and he was all for it too.
00:11:30.639 --> 00:11:34.080
He was like, we're like, hey, do you want to like go taste test some fair food for a video?
00:11:34.240 --> 00:11:36.799
He's like, yeah, absolutely.
00:11:37.120 --> 00:11:39.600
So uh yeah, he's really excited.
00:11:39.759 --> 00:11:45.360
But um, besides fair food, there's so much about the fair to kind of appreciate as well.
00:11:45.440 --> 00:11:47.360
Um, especially 4-H'ers too.
00:11:47.519 --> 00:11:54.080
Yeah, they work so hard, you know, all year long um to show these animals and they uh learn a lot of lessons too.
00:11:54.320 --> 00:12:00.559
So yeah, we talked to uh some 4-H'ers about, you know, kind of what it takes uh to be in the position that they're in.
00:12:00.720 --> 00:12:05.039
So 4-H is more uh much more than just about showing animals, honestly.
00:12:05.200 --> 00:12:10.960
Uh and a lot of the members say it teaches them responsibility, respect, leadership, and life skills too.
00:12:11.120 --> 00:12:18.000
And I talked with um see no some 4-H volunteers and leaders and livestock judges too, and they've all said the same thing as well.
00:12:18.240 --> 00:12:25.519
So uh local 4-H'ers, they spend months um caring for uh caring for and preparing their animals before a fair week.
00:12:25.600 --> 00:12:32.799
A lot of it uh goes into it um as well, uh on top with managing, you know, their their school, their schooling and things like that.
00:12:32.960 --> 00:12:41.440
So Ellie Johnson, who shows pigs, says 4-H has taught her responsibility and helped her find confidence in something she's passionate about.
00:12:41.679 --> 00:12:54.000
Um and Evelyn Gesey, uh, she shows cattle and poultry and enjoys the hands-on learning uh that comes with raising animals too, you know, getting up in the morning, doing your chores, feeding the animals, uh things like that.
00:12:54.240 --> 00:13:02.720
Kipton Poe, in his first year of 4-H, says the program has taught him respect while helping him develop sheep showing skills as well.
00:13:03.039 --> 00:13:11.200
And Rhett uh Backshider, a mini 4-H member, enjoys showing goats and learning how to work with the judges and animals too.
00:13:11.519 --> 00:13:20.240
So all four of these uh young exhibitors uh highlighted the friendships, family involvements, and the lessons uh learned throughout the program along the way.
00:13:20.480 --> 00:13:21.679
Wow, that is incredible.
00:13:21.840 --> 00:13:24.559
Yeah, it is yeah, those are great life lessons.
00:13:24.799 --> 00:13:25.360
It is, yeah.
00:13:25.600 --> 00:13:28.559
And I don't think I asked you, Erka, what's your favorite part of the fair?
00:13:28.879 --> 00:13:29.840
My favorite part?
00:13:30.080 --> 00:13:43.679
Oh, um I think I honestly think it is the fair boot, but also um I just love talking to people at the fair at the different fair booths and seeing the camaraderie and the community that's there.
00:13:43.840 --> 00:13:56.960
You know, it's so uh fun to like watch someone like you know, maybe it's so and so like you know, they haven't seen each other in years, and but at the fair it's like the one time that they see each other.
00:13:57.120 --> 00:13:57.360
Yeah.
00:13:57.600 --> 00:14:02.399
So I don't know, it's like it's it's a good way to like catch up with friends and stuff like that too.
00:14:02.480 --> 00:14:03.440
So yeah, yeah.
00:14:03.679 --> 00:14:04.480
That's such a great point.
00:14:04.720 --> 00:14:10.240
It's just a great way to get involved with the community and meet new people and catch up with the people you haven't seen in a while.
00:14:10.480 --> 00:14:11.440
Yeah, absolutely.
00:14:12.399 --> 00:14:17.840
Well, um, with uh after fair week, uh school will be right around the corner as well.
00:14:18.159 --> 00:14:18.960
Yes, it will be.
00:14:19.039 --> 00:14:21.679
We have quite a few first days of school coming up.
00:14:22.000 --> 00:14:26.080
Um starting with Clark Pleasant Community School Corporation on July 29th.
00:14:26.399 --> 00:14:30.320
Um and then Greenwood Community School Corporation's first day is August 4th.
00:14:30.639 --> 00:14:37.840
Center Grove starts on August 5th, uh, and then Franklin Community Schools Corporate Corporation starts August 5th.
00:14:38.240 --> 00:14:40.480
Actually, a few school corporations start.
00:14:40.799 --> 00:14:44.000
A few there's at least four of them that all start on the same day.
00:14:44.080 --> 00:14:45.279
So Yeah.
00:14:45.600 --> 00:14:53.039
Yeah, because we have Indian Creek School Corporation starting on August 5th, and then Edinburgh Community School Corporation again is on August 5th.
00:14:53.200 --> 00:14:53.519
Yeah.
00:14:53.759 --> 00:15:02.080
Um, so one thing that we kind of started doing last year uh is we go out on the first day of school and take photos um as well.
00:15:02.320 --> 00:15:11.759
So uh we'll all kind of you know be out there, but not not sure what school yet, but uh you might see us out there with a camera just getting first day of school photos.
00:15:11.840 --> 00:15:14.720
Those are always so fun, especially the little kids, you know.
00:15:14.879 --> 00:15:15.039
Yeah.
00:15:15.200 --> 00:15:22.559
Um, you know, you can see them come in holding hands, they're so excited, and then maybe you get to the high schoolers and they're like, why is it so early?
00:15:22.639 --> 00:15:24.159
You know, summer's over.
00:15:24.639 --> 00:15:25.279
Summer's over.
00:15:25.440 --> 00:15:27.200
Why am I here at 7 30 in the morning?
00:15:27.600 --> 00:15:30.080
But um, no, it's a it's a really fun day.
00:15:30.159 --> 00:15:34.240
So I'm really excited um to with being the education reporter.
00:15:34.320 --> 00:15:36.080
I'm excited for school to start back up again.
00:15:36.240 --> 00:15:46.799

This week on Beyond the Headlines, Johnson County Fair crowns the 2026 Fair Queen.
00:00:06.080 --> 00:00:09.439
Argersville considers speed limit changes for golf cart safety.
00:00:09.679 --> 00:00:15.599
20 years later, Franklin remembers Blake and China Dickus, and kids cheer what it takes to be a 4-H tur.
00:00:16.800 --> 00:00:23.600
From the Daily Journal, this is Beyond the Headlines, a local news podcast focused on story shaping Johnson County.
00:00:40.799 --> 00:00:41.359
Pretty good.
00:00:41.600 --> 00:00:43.600
Very glad it's a little less hot out today.
00:00:43.759 --> 00:00:46.000
Yes, it's uh it's been it's fair week.
00:00:46.079 --> 00:00:48.079
It's been uh a little hot yesterday.
00:00:48.240 --> 00:00:49.920
Uh, you know, the weather wasn't bad.
00:00:50.000 --> 00:00:54.079
Uh we're filming this on uh Thursday, so I was out there Wednesday.
00:00:54.320 --> 00:01:00.560
Um and yeah, the weather wasn't bad, but it's it's been a busy week, lots of lot of fair stuff going on.
00:01:00.719 --> 00:01:03.759
So uh and this is have you covered a fair before?
00:01:04.079 --> 00:01:13.040
Not this fun, but I'm excited to get out there hopefully Saturday and spend some time out exploring, seeing the animal auction, and maybe trying a few things.
00:01:13.280 --> 00:01:13.840
Yeah, yeah.
00:01:14.000 --> 00:01:17.040
It'll uh it's definitely uh a fun fair to cover.
00:01:17.120 --> 00:01:18.480
Everyone's so nice there.
00:01:18.640 --> 00:01:23.040
Um, so but yeah, we have some fair news uh we've been keeping up with.
00:01:23.120 --> 00:01:27.200
Uh and they elected um the 2026 fair queen.
00:01:27.280 --> 00:01:28.400
So let's talk a little bit about that.
00:01:28.719 --> 00:01:34.560
Ainsley Botkin was crowned Miss Johnson County 2026 at Sunday's pageant held at McCarty Mulch Indoor Arena.
00:01:34.879 --> 00:01:40.400
Botkin also earned the title of Miss Congeniality, showing she was a favorite among judges and fellow contestants.
00:01:40.640 --> 00:01:46.079
Ten young women competed for the crown, with Addie Morris, the 2025 Queen, passing the title.
00:01:46.239 --> 00:01:51.920
Other members of the Queen's court were Hale Chadwell, Morgan Keith, Charlie Kramer, and Chloe Farmer.
00:01:52.239 --> 00:01:52.400
Yeah.
00:01:52.560 --> 00:01:54.799
So a lot of women were vying for this crown.
00:01:54.879 --> 00:01:56.879
So, um, and Ainsley took it home.
00:01:57.040 --> 00:01:59.599
So uh tell us a little bit about uh Ainsley Botkin.
00:01:59.920 --> 00:02:00.159
Yeah.
00:02:00.319 --> 00:02:04.560
So Botkin is a Franklin Community High School grad and will be a sophomore at the University of St.
00:02:04.640 --> 00:02:05.200
Francis.
00:02:05.359 --> 00:02:08.960
She's currently studying to become a cardiovascular surgical technician.
00:02:09.759 --> 00:02:14.879
She has deep Johnson County roots, um, and her family was among the county's earliest settlers.
00:02:15.039 --> 00:02:19.120
So she grew up involved in 4H and spent a lot of time in the sheep farm.
00:02:19.360 --> 00:02:19.919
That's awesome.
00:02:20.159 --> 00:02:20.560
Yeah.
00:02:20.800 --> 00:02:27.199
She also said she was inspired by previous Fair Queens, and she wanted to continue their legacy of determination, leadership, and kindness.
00:02:27.439 --> 00:02:28.319
Oh, that's so nice.
00:02:28.400 --> 00:02:28.639
Yeah.
00:02:28.719 --> 00:02:40.879
I was um I was talking with a former fair queen uh yesterday, and uh just about the process, and it's all um the whole experience kind of brings a a sisterhood as well, um, amongst the contestants as well.
00:02:41.039 --> 00:02:41.199
Yeah.
00:02:41.360 --> 00:02:46.000
Um, but something new this year, uh the contestants were able to give speeches.
00:02:46.080 --> 00:02:47.759
So uh what did Ainsley say?
00:02:48.080 --> 00:02:53.919
So Ainsley's speech focused on her cherished fair memories and the importance of the Johnson County Fair to the community.
00:02:54.080 --> 00:03:02.319
Um, preparation for the speech included daily speech practice, mock interviews, stage rehearsals, and building confidence and poise.
00:03:02.560 --> 00:03:09.360
And, you know, you mentioned that sisterhood fellow contestants emphasized their strong sense of friendship and sisterhood throughout the competition.
00:03:09.520 --> 00:03:14.400
Yeah, so they were cheering for each other backstage, and it sounds like they had a really good sense of camaraderie.
00:03:14.560 --> 00:03:15.280
Oh, yeah, absolutely.
00:03:15.360 --> 00:03:16.879
And I I could see it um being there.
00:03:16.960 --> 00:03:24.319
I've covered uh fairs before, and you kind of see that camaraderie build um, you know, during the competition, but also throughout the fair, too.
00:03:24.400 --> 00:03:28.080
So it's it's kind of it's a kind of a fun thing to witness as well.
00:03:28.240 --> 00:03:31.840
So, but um, what was her reaction when she found out that she won?
00:03:32.319 --> 00:03:40.159
So she said she was shocked when her number was announced as the winner, and she credited her faith and the support of fellow contestants for helping her succeed.
00:03:40.319 --> 00:03:45.360
Um, her parents also expressed a lot of pride in her accomplishments and the hard work that she put into the competition.
00:03:45.680 --> 00:03:46.240
That's awesome.
00:03:46.319 --> 00:03:47.280
Yeah, well, that's great.
00:03:47.360 --> 00:03:49.599
And congratulations to Ainsley Votkin.
00:03:49.840 --> 00:03:54.719
Um, you know, uh it's always nice to cover a fair uh fair queen each year.
00:03:54.800 --> 00:03:57.360
So uh, and they all have something different to say.
00:03:57.439 --> 00:03:58.400
So that's great.
00:03:58.560 --> 00:04:03.919
We have some more news for you, uh, not fair related, but just uh what's going on around Johnson County.
00:04:04.080 --> 00:04:13.039
So uh Bargersville officials are considering new speed limit changes aimed at improving traffic safety and expanding golf cart access to downtown amenities.
00:04:13.199 --> 00:04:16.399
Now, golf carts are becoming increasingly popular as well, too.
00:04:16.639 --> 00:04:27.920
So uh this proposed was introduced at the July 14th town council meeting and was still uh and it still needs to go through a public hearing and second uh reading before it uh before it's adopted.
00:04:28.079 --> 00:04:36.639
So uh town leaders say the plan is part of a broader effort to improve mobility, neighborhood connectivity, and safe access throughout the community.
00:04:36.800 --> 00:04:46.319
A lot of um a lot of the suburban neighborhoods in uh Bargersville uh don't really have a connective trail to go uh to downtown.
00:04:46.480 --> 00:04:48.480
So this is kind of their way to do that.
00:04:48.639 --> 00:05:02.639
Under current rules, golf carts are allowed on town streets with speed limits of 30 miles per hour or less, and golf cards are not permitted on sidewalks, trails, State Road 135, or Old Planck Road, unless you're crossing at an intersection.
00:05:03.040 --> 00:05:07.839
So, Erica, what are the proposed speed limit changes and where could they be implemented?
00:05:08.079 --> 00:05:26.560
00:05:26.720 --> 00:05:33.839
Other segments would be adjusted to 40 miles uh per hour to create a more gradual transition within the town, too.
00:05:34.079 --> 00:05:36.319
And so what did the council say about this proposal?
00:05:36.399 --> 00:05:38.319
Like, are they all pretty excited about it?
00:05:38.399 --> 00:05:39.519
Is this something that they want?
00:05:39.759 --> 00:05:42.720
Well, not all the council members are on board with this, actually.
00:05:42.800 --> 00:05:49.920
So, council member Ruth Amore, uh, she expressed uh concern for drivers coming over the hills that could collide with golf carts.
00:05:50.000 --> 00:05:51.920
She even said that it gives her nightmares.
00:05:52.160 --> 00:06:01.759
Um, you know, County Road uh being at least on that stretch, uh a lot of people don't follow the speed limit through there, uh, just because it's a long stretch of road.
00:06:01.920 --> 00:06:13.120
And also, uh town manager Dax Norton said golf carts are already heavily traveling County Road 144, and the slowing traffic near Kephard Park is a major motivation behind this proposal as well.
00:06:13.360 --> 00:06:23.199
Um, police chief Todd Bertram said enforcement will be needed to get uh drivers to adjust to lower speeds, but the transition should not overly be disruptive.
00:06:23.360 --> 00:06:37.600
Uh but uh the data that was provided to me at least uh that at least five crashes in the last year occurred uh in the County Road 144 area and nearby roads with um and also numerous traffic stops as well.
00:06:38.000 --> 00:06:49.360
So the council is still gonna continue looking at this to balance the two priorities for more um accessibility for golf carts, um, while also addressing uh safety concerns as well.
00:06:49.600 --> 00:06:50.000
Yeah.
00:06:50.160 --> 00:06:54.480
Well, it sounds like the council has a lot to consider before they vote on this again.
00:06:54.720 --> 00:06:55.040
Yeah.
00:06:55.279 --> 00:06:58.480
And uh, you know, there's golf carts everywhere.
00:06:58.720 --> 00:07:02.079
So this is just another way to keep them safe, I guess.
00:07:02.319 --> 00:07:05.360
So yeah, we're gonna take a quick break and be right back.
00:07:05.680 --> 00:07:09.120
Want your business to reach our listeners in Johnson County and beyond?
00:07:09.279 --> 00:07:18.079
Reach out to the Daily Journal by calling 317-736-2730 to ask about our advertising opportunities.
00:07:18.800 --> 00:07:19.759
And we're back.
00:07:19.839 --> 00:07:21.759
Um, and we have some more news for you.
00:07:21.920 --> 00:07:28.480
There was uh a very um a very nice memorial uh service earlier this week.
00:07:28.639 --> 00:07:32.560
Um, and Kirsten, you want to tell us a little bit more about uh about that?
00:07:32.879 --> 00:07:33.279
Yeah.
00:07:33.519 --> 00:07:42.560
The Franklin community um gathered Saturday at Needham Elementary School to honor Blake and China Dickus, whose murders remain unsolved nearly 20 years later.
00:07:42.800 --> 00:07:43.120
Yeah.
00:07:43.439 --> 00:07:52.720
This is uh something I've uh I believe we've been covering um from what I've been told uh for a while, um, and something that still remains unsolved.
00:07:52.800 --> 00:07:57.920
And with it being its 20-year anniversary, uh they kind of made this memorial a little more special.
00:07:58.240 --> 00:07:58.720
Yeah.
00:07:59.040 --> 00:08:03.920
Yeah, it sounds like you know, the focus was really on trying to remember Blake and China Dickus.
00:08:04.160 --> 00:08:08.800
Um, participants carried blue balloons and they released butterflies around Blake's memorial tree.
00:08:09.199 --> 00:08:13.519
So their goal was to remember the lives of both victims rather than the tragedy itself.
00:08:13.839 --> 00:08:14.959
Yeah, that's very nice.
00:08:15.199 --> 00:08:20.399
Well, um, you know, just for uh context, what uh what happened to Yeah.
00:08:20.480 --> 00:08:28.240
So on July 24th, 2026, 10-year-old Blake Dickus and his stepmother China were murdered in their Franklin home in the Brannigan Woods neighborhood.
00:08:28.480 --> 00:08:33.519
The case remains active, and Franklin police continue to investigate, according to the Franklin police chief.
00:08:33.679 --> 00:08:40.080
In the months surrounding the murders, several nearby homes were burglarized in a similar manner, though no arrests have been made in the homicide case.
00:08:40.399 --> 00:08:41.440
Wow, that's crazy.
00:08:41.600 --> 00:08:46.559
Um, and I know during the memorial a lot of um a lot of people, family members spoke as well.
00:08:46.720 --> 00:08:49.600
So um, share a little bit about what they had to say about them.
00:08:50.159 --> 00:08:51.120
Yeah, absolutely.
00:08:51.279 --> 00:08:57.759
So Blake's mother, Christina Dickas, spoke about the impact of losing her son and the pain of living without answers for two decades.
00:08:58.320 --> 00:09:04.720
She described Blake as a joyful kid who loved riding his bike, eating pancakes, going to Pizza King, and camping with family.
00:09:05.600 --> 00:09:15.039
She reflected on the life that Blake never got the chance to live, which included milestones such as graduating high school, um, getting married, and entering adulthood.
00:09:15.519 --> 00:09:20.399
Family members also honored China's love and devotion to Blake, noting that she cared really deeply about him.
00:09:21.039 --> 00:09:27.279
And then speakers also encouraged the community to remember Blake not for the way he died, but for the kind, energetic child he was while he lived.
00:09:27.600 --> 00:09:34.480
Well, he sounds like a very nice kid, you know, uh just from uh the speech that they gave and you know how they described him.
00:09:34.559 --> 00:09:37.600
So and this case still remains insult, too, right?
00:09:37.919 --> 00:09:38.240
Yes.
00:09:38.399 --> 00:09:44.960
Um actually there's a$25,000 reward that is still available for any information that leads to an arrest.
00:09:45.039 --> 00:09:51.200
Um and anonymous tips can be submitted by calling 317-346-1100.
00:09:51.759 --> 00:09:58.559
Yeah, if anyone has any information about that, um, like you said, this has been 20 years since they've uh tragically passed.
00:09:58.720 --> 00:10:03.840
So um if anyone has any information, uh, you know, there's still a tip line available.
00:10:04.080 --> 00:10:04.879
So yeah.
00:10:05.360 --> 00:10:08.399
And I think it's good that they keep the uh their memories alive.
00:10:08.480 --> 00:10:09.440
So I think so.
00:10:09.519 --> 00:10:12.879
It sounds like it was a beautiful memorial service with the butterflies and balloons.
00:10:13.039 --> 00:10:13.840
Yeah, absolutely.
00:10:14.000 --> 00:10:14.240
Yeah.
00:10:14.480 --> 00:10:17.919
Well, we're gonna take a quick break and uh be back with our round table.
00:10:18.320 --> 00:10:21.200

00:10:33.679 --> 00:10:35.360
And we're back with our round table.
00:10:35.440 --> 00:10:38.320
We got some more uh fair stuff going on.
00:10:38.480 --> 00:10:41.759
Um, but yeah, we've you know been out and about.
00:10:41.840 --> 00:10:44.159
Uh, you know, I always love covering the fair.
00:10:44.240 --> 00:10:46.159
I love the food side of it too.
00:10:46.320 --> 00:10:50.399
So uh what's your favorite thing about uh fairs in general?
00:10:50.559 --> 00:10:54.799
So I know you've uh you've covered some before, yeah, um, but you haven't covered this one.
00:10:54.879 --> 00:10:57.039
So what makes uh this one a little different?
00:10:57.279 --> 00:11:03.600
You know, I'm I'm really excited to see which fair food our intern Nathan really likes the best.
00:11:03.679 --> 00:11:03.840
Yeah.
00:11:04.080 --> 00:11:09.919
So after he uh finishes with his taste test, I might go out and try some of his recommendations.
00:11:10.159 --> 00:11:11.440
Oh yeah, that's a good idea.
00:11:11.600 --> 00:11:23.200
So for um the those that might not know, we uh are working on a video, it might already be up by then, um, about uh we're having our intern Nathan go out and try some different fair food.
00:11:23.279 --> 00:11:26.639
So he's kind of our like our um our guinea pig.
00:11:26.799 --> 00:11:28.240
Yeah, he's our guinea pig.
00:11:28.399 --> 00:11:30.559
Um so and he was all for it too.
00:11:30.639 --> 00:11:34.080
He was like, we're like, hey, do you want to like go taste test some fair food for a video?
00:11:34.240 --> 00:11:36.799
He's like, yeah, absolutely.
00:11:37.120 --> 00:11:39.600
So uh yeah, he's really excited.
00:11:39.759 --> 00:11:45.360
But um, besides fair food, there's so much about the fair to kind of appreciate as well.
00:11:45.440 --> 00:11:47.360
Um, especially 4-H'ers too.
00:11:47.519 --> 00:11:54.080
Yeah, they work so hard, you know, all year long um to show these animals and they uh learn a lot of lessons too.
00:11:54.320 --> 00:12:00.559
So yeah, we talked to uh some 4-H'ers about, you know, kind of what it takes uh to be in the position that they're in.
00:12:00.720 --> 00:12:05.039
So 4-H is more uh much more than just about showing animals, honestly.
00:12:05.200 --> 00:12:10.960
Uh and a lot of the members say it teaches them responsibility, respect, leadership, and life skills too.
00:12:11.120 --> 00:12:18.000
And I talked with um see no some 4-H volunteers and leaders and livestock judges too, and they've all said the same thing as well.
00:12:18.240 --> 00:12:25.519
So uh local 4-H'ers, they spend months um caring for uh caring for and preparing their animals before a fair week.
00:12:25.600 --> 00:12:32.799
A lot of it uh goes into it um as well, uh on top with managing, you know, their their school, their schooling and things like that.
00:12:32.960 --> 00:12:41.440
So Ellie Johnson, who shows pigs, says 4-H has taught her responsibility and helped her find confidence in something she's passionate about.
00:12:41.679 --> 00:12:54.000
Um and Evelyn Gesey, uh, she shows cattle and poultry and enjoys the hands-on learning uh that comes with raising animals too, you know, getting up in the morning, doing your chores, feeding the animals, uh things like that.
00:12:54.240 --> 00:13:02.720
Kipton Poe, in his first year of 4-H, says the program has taught him respect while helping him develop sheep showing skills as well.
00:13:03.039 --> 00:13:11.200
And Rhett uh Backshider, a mini 4-H member, enjoys showing goats and learning how to work with the judges and animals too.
00:13:11.519 --> 00:13:20.240
So all four of these uh young exhibitors uh highlighted the friendships, family involvements, and the lessons uh learned throughout the program along the way.
00:13:20.480 --> 00:13:21.679
Wow, that is incredible.
00:13:21.840 --> 00:13:24.559
Yeah, it is yeah, those are great life lessons.
00:13:24.799 --> 00:13:25.360
It is, yeah.
00:13:25.600 --> 00:13:28.559
And I don't think I asked you, Erka, what's your favorite part of the fair?
00:13:28.879 --> 00:13:29.840
My favorite part?
00:13:30.080 --> 00:13:43.679
Oh, um I think I honestly think it is the fair boot, but also um I just love talking to people at the fair at the different fair booths and seeing the camaraderie and the community that's there.
00:13:43.840 --> 00:13:56.960
You know, it's so uh fun to like watch someone like you know, maybe it's so and so like you know, they haven't seen each other in years, and but at the fair it's like the one time that they see each other.
00:13:57.120 --> 00:13:57.360
Yeah.
00:13:57.600 --> 00:14:02.399
So I don't know, it's like it's it's a good way to like catch up with friends and stuff like that too.
00:14:02.480 --> 00:14:03.440
So yeah, yeah.
00:14:03.679 --> 00:14:04.480
That's such a great point.
00:14:04.720 --> 00:14:10.240
It's just a great way to get involved with the community and meet new people and catch up with the people you haven't seen in a while.
00:14:10.480 --> 00:14:11.440
Yeah, absolutely.
00:14:12.399 --> 00:14:17.840
Well, um, with uh after fair week, uh school will be right around the corner as well.
00:14:18.159 --> 00:14:18.960
Yes, it will be.
00:14:19.039 --> 00:14:21.679
We have quite a few first days of school coming up.
00:14:22.000 --> 00:14:26.080
Um starting with Clark Pleasant Community School Corporation on July 29th.
00:14:26.399 --> 00:14:30.320
Um and then Greenwood Community School Corporation's first day is August 4th.
00:14:30.639 --> 00:14:37.840
Center Grove starts on August 5th, uh, and then Franklin Community Schools Corporate Corporation starts August 5th.
00:14:38.240 --> 00:14:40.480
Actually, a few school corporations start.
00:14:40.799 --> 00:14:44.000
A few there's at least four of them that all start on the same day.
00:14:44.080 --> 00:14:45.279
So Yeah.
00:14:45.600 --> 00:14:53.039
Yeah, because we have Indian Creek School Corporation starting on August 5th, and then Edinburgh Community School Corporation again is on August 5th.
00:14:53.200 --> 00:14:53.519
Yeah.
00:14:53.759 --> 00:15:02.080
Um, so one thing that we kind of started doing last year uh is we go out on the first day of school and take photos um as well.
00:15:02.320 --> 00:15:11.759
So uh we'll all kind of you know be out there, but not not sure what school yet, but uh you might see us out there with a camera just getting first day of school photos.
00:15:11.840 --> 00:15:14.720
Those are always so fun, especially the little kids, you know.
00:15:14.879 --> 00:15:15.039
Yeah.
00:15:15.200 --> 00:15:22.559
Um, you know, you can see them come in holding hands, they're so excited, and then maybe you get to the high schoolers and they're like, why is it so early?
00:15:22.639 --> 00:15:24.159
You know, summer's over.
00:15:24.639 --> 00:15:25.279
Summer's over.
00:15:25.440 --> 00:15:27.200
Why am I here at 7 30 in the morning?
00:15:27.600 --> 00:15:30.080
But um, no, it's a it's a really fun day.
00:15:30.159 --> 00:15:34.240
So I'm really excited um to with being the education reporter.
00:15:34.320 --> 00:15:36.080
I'm excited for school to start back up again.
