What if the greatest danger to your soul isn’t failure but the pride that follows success? We open Jeremiah 17 and the parable of the rich man and Lazarus to trace a stark contrast: dryness for those who trust in themselves and living water for those who root their hope in God. From there, we step into a Carmelite meditation on humility that reframes discouragement, showing how self-reliance quietly breeds despair while confidence in mercy restores peace, joy, and strength.
We read the Gospel with fresh eyes: the rich man’s downfall isn’t luxury itself but a heart that overlooks Lazarus at his gate. Abraham’s reply cuts to the core—God has already spoken through Moses and the prophets; the invitation to conversion stands. That same invitation reaches into our daily patterns. It asks us to notice where we assign credit. Many of us can own our failures, yet we cling to our wins as self-made. True humility does both: it admits fault without despair and returns every success to the Giver. This shift not only guards our hearts from hidden pride but also frees us to serve with generosity.
Along the way, we hold up two paths after a fall: Judas’s despair and Peter’s tears. Both men failed; only one trusted love enough to come back. That trust becomes our Lenten practice—confess quickly, ask boldly, and let grace carry what effort cannot. We close with practical steps for the week, from fasting on Friday to small acts of mercy that keep our roots in living water. If this reflection moves you, share it with a friend, subscribe for the journey through Lent, and leave a review with one way you’re practicing humility today.

00:00:30.239 --> 00:00:32.159
Good morning, everyone.
00:00:33.280 --> 00:00:46.479
And welcome to Thursday of the second week of Lent, day sixteen, in our forty-six day long journey to uh to Easter here.
00:00:48.399 --> 00:00:57.359
Um, so today will be the last day of this week where I do so where I do this for with a professional mic and a professional webcam.
00:00:57.840 --> 00:01:02.159
Um, I'm not gonna say professional studio because it's a little messy right now.
00:01:03.280 --> 00:01:11.519
Um but um yeah, so I'll be traveling the remainder of the week here for my grandmother's funeral.
00:01:11.680 --> 00:01:14.159
Um, but we're still gonna do it.
00:01:14.319 --> 00:01:16.400
You just might have to suffer through a little.
00:01:16.719 --> 00:01:19.359
But it's Lent, so that's perfect, right?
00:01:19.599 --> 00:01:21.120
Considered a penance.
00:01:21.760 --> 00:01:29.519
Um, but anyways, we're gonna get into the readings from Mass for today and then the meditations from Divine Intimacy.
00:01:31.040 --> 00:01:32.719
And uh and we'll get going here.
00:01:32.799 --> 00:01:35.519
So I'll throw up an image on screen.
00:01:36.239 --> 00:01:41.840
You know, saying the same stuff day after day gets a little old, but you never know if someone's watching for the first time.
00:01:42.000 --> 00:01:55.840
So if you are joining us, what we do is I I read the the readings for mass, the the lesson or epistle followed by the gospel from the traditional missal uh for today.
00:01:56.239 --> 00:02:05.359
And then I read out of the book Divine Intimacy by uh let me just pull it up here by Father Gabriel of St.
00:02:05.519 --> 00:02:06.400
Mary Magdalene.
00:02:06.480 --> 00:02:08.879
He was a disgust uh Carmelite.
00:02:10.080 --> 00:02:16.479
Read the meditations from that, and then um I'll mention whatever comes to my head, I guess.
00:02:16.719 --> 00:02:21.520
Uh whatever nonsense is floating around in there afterwards.
00:02:22.000 --> 00:02:23.759
But I throw up an image on screen.
00:02:23.919 --> 00:02:28.080
There's nothing to look at or really watch, you just listen.
00:02:28.319 --> 00:02:30.400
Um, so you can do that on YouTube.
00:02:30.800 --> 00:02:33.680
Um, like I said, though, there's really not going to be anything to watch.
00:02:33.840 --> 00:02:38.000
Um, otherwise, you can do it on any of the audio podcast apps.
00:02:38.719 --> 00:02:49.680
So, without further ado, let me throw up this image on screen, and we'll get started with the readings from the traditional mass for Thursday of the second week of Lent here.
00:02:51.360 --> 00:02:51.680
Okay.
00:02:55.759 --> 00:02:59.840
So the lesson for today comes from Jeremiah 17.
00:03:03.120 --> 00:03:12.080
Thus saith the Lord God, Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and his heart departeth from the Lord.
00:03:12.400 --> 00:03:23.599
For he shall be like tamaric in the desert, and he shall not see when good shall come, but he shall dwell in dry dryness in the desert, in a salt land, and not inhabited.
00:03:23.840 --> 00:03:45.919
Blessed be the man that trusteth in the Lord, and the Lord shall be his confidence, and he shall be as a tree that is planted by the waters, that spreadeth out its roots towards moisture, and it shall not fear when the heat cometh, and the leaf thereof shall be green, and in the time of drought it shall not be solicitous, neither shall it cease at any time to bring forth fruit.
00:03:46.479 --> 00:03:50.960
The heart is perverse above all things, and unsearchable, who can know it?
00:03:51.199 --> 00:04:00.960
I am the Lord who searched the heart, improved the reins, who give to everyone according to his way, and according to the fruit of his devices, saith the Lord Almighty.
00:04:04.240 --> 00:04:12.960
Okay, now we'll read the gospel for today, which is Luke sixteen, nineteen through thirty one.
00:04:14.479 --> 00:04:25.199
At that time Jesus said to the Pharisees, There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen, and feasted sumptuously every day.
00:04:25.519 --> 00:04:35.600
There was a certain beggar named Lazarus, who lay at his gate full of sores, desiring to be filled with the crumbs that fell from the rich man's table, and no one did give him.
00:04:35.839 --> 00:04:38.560
Moreover, the dogs came and licked his sores.
00:04:38.720 --> 00:04:48.240
And it came to pass that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom, and the rich man also died, and he was buried in hell.
00:04:48.480 --> 00:05:08.319
And lifting up his eyes when he was in when he was in torment, he saw Abraham far off, and Lazarus in his bosom, and he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water to cool my tongue, for I am tormented in this flame.
00:05:08.800 --> 00:05:18.000
And Abraham said to him, Son, remember that thou didst receive good things in thy lifetime, and likewise Lazarus is evil things.
00:05:18.319 --> 00:05:21.360
But now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.
00:05:21.759 --> 00:05:32.720
Besides all this, between us and you there is a fixed there is fixed a great chaos, so that they would pass from hence to you cannot, nor from thence come hither.
00:05:32.959 --> 00:05:44.800
And he said, Then father, I beseech thee that thou wouldst send him to my father's house, for I have five brethren, that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.
00:05:45.360 --> 00:05:50.480
And Abraham said to him, They have Moses and the prophets, let them hear them.
00:05:50.800 --> 00:05:56.720
But he said, No, Father Abraham, but if one shall go to them from the dead, they will do penance.
00:05:57.120 --> 00:06:04.000
And he said to them, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they believe if one rose again from the dead.
00:06:10.160 --> 00:06:12.319
Okay, that's the Mass readings.
00:06:12.560 --> 00:06:15.279
Let me open up divine intimacy here now.
00:06:17.920 --> 00:06:19.759
Okay, let's see here.
00:06:27.439 --> 00:06:29.279
Humility in our falls.
00:06:32.959 --> 00:06:34.959
I am a beggar and poor.
00:06:35.360 --> 00:06:45.920
But the Lord is that But the Lord is careful for me, in the shadow of thy wings I will hope.
00:06:48.800 --> 00:06:50.000
Meditation one.
00:06:52.240 --> 00:07:00.000
If we contemplate our misery without raising our eyes to God, the Father of mercies, we will easily become discouraged.
00:07:00.240 --> 00:07:06.720
By examining ourselves thoroughly, we will see that discouragement always comes from two closely related causes.
00:07:07.360 --> 00:07:13.279
The first is that we always the first is that we depend upon our own strength.
00:07:13.519 --> 00:07:17.199
Through it our pride is wounded and deceived when we fall.
00:07:17.519 --> 00:07:20.240
The second is that we lack reliance on God.
00:07:20.480 --> 00:07:27.199
We do not think of referring to Him in times of prosperity, nor do we have recourse to Him when we fail Him.
00:07:27.600 --> 00:07:30.160
In short, we act by ourselves.
00:07:30.399 --> 00:07:36.000
We try to succeed alone, we fall alone, and alone we contemplate our fall.
00:07:36.480 --> 00:07:40.720
The result of such conduct can be can only be discouragement.
00:07:40.959 --> 00:07:50.240
Indeed, how could we expect to find ourselves find in ourselves the strength to rise again when it was our very want of strength that made us fall?
00:07:51.600 --> 00:07:54.560
God does not want us to act by ourselves.
00:07:54.959 --> 00:08:01.439
Woe to him that is alone, says sacred scripture, for when he falleth, he hath none to lift him up.
00:08:02.240 --> 00:08:07.839
Woe to him who relies only on his own strength to put his good resolutions into execution.
00:08:08.160 --> 00:08:11.759
When he falls, he will not have the aid of God's might to lift him up.
00:08:12.000 --> 00:08:15.920
Thus he will remain in his misery, confused and discouraged.
00:08:16.639 --> 00:08:21.040
Just as we should not make good resolutions without counting on God's help to keep them.
00:08:21.279 --> 00:08:26.319
By the same token, we should not view our failures without considering God's mercy at the same time.
00:08:27.120 --> 00:08:33.840
For as God is the only one who can help us persevere in good, so he alone can raise up raise us up from evil.
00:08:34.480 --> 00:08:41.120
That is why all the saints have taught that the knowledge of oneself must never be separated from the knowledge of God, and vice versa.
00:08:41.519 --> 00:08:50.480
Saint Teresa of Jesus says, the soul must sometimes emerge from self-knowledge and soar aloft a meditation upon the greatness and the majesty of its God.
00:08:51.039 --> 00:09:01.600
Doing this will help it to realize its own baseness better than thinking of its own nature, and it will be freer from the reptiles which enter the first rooms, that is, the rooms of self-knowledge.
00:09:04.000 --> 00:09:05.519
Meditation too.
00:09:10.480 --> 00:09:17.120
True humility, however deep it may be, neither disquiets nor troubles, nor disturbs the soul.
00:09:17.360 --> 00:09:20.320
It is accompanied by peace, joy, and tranquility.
00:09:20.480 --> 00:09:23.919
It enlarges it and makes it fit to serve God better.
00:09:24.320 --> 00:09:31.279
On the other hand, false humility only disturbs and upsets the mind and troubles the soul, so grievous is it.
00:09:31.519 --> 00:09:38.799
I think the devil is anxious for us to believe that we are humble, and if he can, he will lead us to distrust God.
00:09:40.240 --> 00:09:47.759
Distress and lack of confidence lessen our capacity for loving, and the devil's aim is to hold back souls on the road to love.
00:09:48.080 --> 00:09:53.440
He tries in this way to overcome those, especially who would never give in to open temptations to sin.
00:09:54.799 --> 00:09:57.600
In this case, we must react in a positive way.
00:09:57.919 --> 00:10:06.559
Recall as Saint Therese of the Child Jesus teaches, that what offends God and wounds his heart most is want of confidence.
00:10:06.960 --> 00:10:16.960
To be wanting in confidence in God's mercy, even after a grave fall, is never a sign of true humility, but of insidious pride and diabolical temptation.
00:10:17.279 --> 00:10:24.480
If Judas had been humble, he would have asked pardon and wept for his sins like Peter, instead of despairing.
00:10:24.799 --> 00:10:34.559
Humility is the virtue which keeps us in our place, and our place in God's sight is the and our place in God's sight is that of children who are weak and miserable.
00:10:35.039 --> 00:10:37.600
Yes, but confident children.
00:10:39.039 --> 00:10:57.759
When we fall into the same imperfections after so many good resolutions, when after many efforts we still do not succeed in correcting certain faults or in overcoming certain difficulties, and we find ourselves in one way or another far beneath what we ought or would like to be, let us have recourse to the infallible remedy of humility.
00:10:58.320 --> 00:11:02.879
Humility, says Saint Teresa of Jesus, is the ointment for our wounds.
00:11:03.200 --> 00:11:16.159
Yet if we seem to have used up all our strength, if we feel unable to do anything and see ourselves always prostrate, powerless to rise, there is still one possibility for us to humble ourselves.
00:11:16.480 --> 00:11:26.559
Let us humble ourselves sincerely and will and with confidence, and humility will supply for all our miseries, it will heal all our wounds because it will attract divine mercy to them.
00:11:34.000 --> 00:11:35.679
And now the colloquy.
00:11:44.000 --> 00:11:49.200
I even glory in it, and expect every day to reveal some fresh imperfection.
00:11:49.440 --> 00:11:54.320
Indeed, these lights on my nothingness do me more good than lights on matters of faith.
00:11:54.639 --> 00:11:55.840
What an illusion.
00:11:56.159 --> 00:11:57.679
We wish never to fall.
00:11:57.919 --> 00:12:01.200
What difference does it make, O Lord, if I fall at every instant?
00:12:01.519 --> 00:12:06.080
It will make me realize my weakness, and I shall derive great profit from it.
00:12:06.320 --> 00:12:12.159
You see what I am capable of, O my God, and so you will be obliged to carry me in your arms.
00:12:12.399 --> 00:12:19.039
If you do not do so, it will mean that you are pleased to see me on the ground, but I shall not be disturbed.
00:12:19.279 --> 00:12:23.519
Full of love I shall always lift up my suppliant arms to you.
00:12:23.679 --> 00:12:26.159
I cannot believe that you will abandon me.
00:12:26.480 --> 00:12:31.679
O Jesus, it is true that I am not always faithful, but I never become discouraged.
00:12:31.840 --> 00:12:44.320
I cast myself into your arms, and like a little dew drop I sink deeper and deeper into your chalice, O divine flower of the field, and there I find all I have lost and much more besides.
00:12:44.879 --> 00:12:50.559
Yes, O my God, I am happy to feel little and weak in your presence, and my heart remains in peace.
00:12:50.720 --> 00:12:54.480
I am glad to feel so imperfect and to need your mercy so much.
00:12:54.799 --> 00:13:00.799
When we calmly accept the humiliation of being imperfect, your grace, O Lord, returns at once.
00:13:04.960 --> 00:13:05.279
Okay.
00:13:12.960 --> 00:13:13.840
There is.
00:13:55.919 --> 00:13:57.440
But I do observe these things.
00:13:57.600 --> 00:14:10.720
Uh I think a lot of people a lot of good Catholics are pretty good at being humble about our failures, right?
00:14:11.279 --> 00:14:16.480
I mean that's maybe for for a lot of people even that's an issue.
00:14:17.679 --> 00:14:21.440
But for a lot uh for for a lot of us that's not so hard.
00:14:21.759 --> 00:14:23.679
We recognize when we fail.
00:14:24.159 --> 00:14:26.799
You know, we we recognize our failings.
00:14:27.759 --> 00:14:36.159
And um and it's it's easy to it's easier, I should say, to be humble about that.
00:14:37.519 --> 00:14:40.240
Um to be honest with ourselves about that.
00:14:41.600 --> 00:14:54.080
But when we are succeeding, when we are doing well it's easy to instead of being humble, to be proud.
00:14:55.039 --> 00:15:04.639
It's easy to attribute that to ourselves, to our own uh intelligence, our own strength, you know, whatever.
00:15:04.879 --> 00:15:07.919
It's easy to attribute success to ourselves.
00:15:08.960 --> 00:15:16.879
Um, so so like humility, like in failures, being humble is attributing that failure to ourselves.
00:15:18.240 --> 00:15:23.679
But in success, being humble is attributing that success to someone or something else.
00:15:24.399 --> 00:15:40.639
Whereas I think those of us who find it easy to attribute our failures to ourselves sometimes also find it easy to attribute our success to ourselves instead of attributing any success or or grace or strength or skill that we have to to God.
00:15:41.279 --> 00:15:50.960
Um, and that's what humility is in that instance is attributing to when things are going well, still being humble and seeing that it it is all it is all from God.
00:15:52.240 --> 00:16:21.360
You know, then you have um, but there are definitely people who who do when who in failures um who maybe I'm not gonna I don't want to say attribute it to themselves too much, um, but when when they attribute failure to themselves, they they believe then that it that they have to rise out of that failure only by themselves too, right?
00:16:21.759 --> 00:16:23.279
And that's that's a sort of pride.
00:16:23.360 --> 00:16:41.840
And in Divine Intimacy talks about it, you know, he talks about talks about Judas, how Judas, when Judas fell, when Judas failed, when he betrayed our Lord, he was too proud to um to ask ask to be pardoned.
00:16:41.919 --> 00:16:49.759
He was too proud to ask for forgiveness, to ask for pardon and penance, and so instead he took his life.
00:16:50.240 --> 00:17:04.319
Um whereas Peter, Peter, who who is rash often, who um rushes to things, who who who can be proud in his successes and failures, right?
00:17:04.480 --> 00:17:08.240
You know, um, I think we see a lot of that in Peter.
00:17:08.480 --> 00:17:23.599
We also see um Peter's utter uh sorrow and repentance when when Peter does fail or or betray our Lord, um like when the cock crowed three times.
00:17:24.000 --> 00:17:29.279
So there is definitely a a dichotomy there um between Judas and Peter.
00:17:30.640 --> 00:17:41.759
You know, Peter wasn't the the perfect apostle, but he was definitely the um the antithesis in a way to to Judas.
00:17:45.200 --> 00:17:55.119
So yeah, there's lots of different sorts of humility or lots of different ways of showing the virtue of humility, of practicing the virtue of humility.
00:17:55.440 --> 00:18:15.359
So I know I need to work on not just being humble when I screw up, but being humble when I do something right, uh, especially because I definitely do feel pride in those instances, and I definitely don't attribute um successes to our Lord um because they really are his successes, um, they're not my own.
00:18:16.960 --> 00:18:21.599
Um so that's what I'm gonna be working on.
00:18:22.240 --> 00:18:24.079
That's what I'm taking away from it.
00:18:24.319 --> 00:18:42.160
Um so yeah, like I said, uh expect this to be done from somewhere in an Airbnb tomorrow off of a uh a laptop webcam and AirPods microphone.
00:18:42.319 --> 00:18:44.400
Um, but we'll get through it, right?
00:18:44.559 --> 00:18:46.559
So, anyways, thank you all.
00:18:46.799 --> 00:18:48.799
Hope you have a great day today.
00:18:49.200 --> 00:18:56.640
Um tomorrow is uh Lenten Friday, so be prepared to not eat meat tomorrow.
00:18:56.960 --> 00:19:02.880
And if you're able and willing, um maybe do a little extra fasting tomorrow, too.
