You can genuinely want something different and still find yourself returning to the same familiar patterns.
What if that resistance isn't weakness, but your subconscious trying to keep you safe?

Signature Quote
“This is true because of my past. Does that need to dictate how you live? No, right?”
Ethan makes this distinction while explaining how past experiences can shape present responses without having to determine what comes next.

Why This Quote Matters
It captures the heart of the conversation: your past can explain a pattern without earning the right to control your future. Understanding why something developed can become the beginning of changing your relationship with it.

Episode Description
Why do we sometimes keep doing things we know aren't helping us?
In this episode of The Audacious Living Podcast, hypnotherapist Ethan Reisboard explores the fascinating tension between what we consciously want and what our subconscious has learned to perceive as safe. Ethan explains why repetition and predictability can feel protective, how old coping mechanisms can outlive their usefulness, and why simply knowing what needs to change doesn't necessarily make change easy.
Drawing from his own experiences with nicotine use and a later struggle with chronic pain and depression, Ethan shares how his personal healing journey eventually changed the direction of his life. The conversation challenges us to look at resistance differently: instead of only asking “Why can't I change?”, what might happen if we also asked, “What was this pattern originally trying to do for me?”

Guest Bio
Ethan Reisboard, CHt, is a hypnotherapist whose relationship with hypnotherapy began personally. While in college, he sought hypnosis for nicotine use and says he has remained nicotine-free for more than five years.
Years later, after a concussion left him dealing with chronic pain and depression, Ethan returned to hypnotherapy after trying numerous other approaches. That experience eventually led him toward becoming a hypnotherapist himself and helping others explore the relationship between subconscious patterns, emotional responses and the nervous system. His journey also took him to Costa Rica, where he has built a dramatically different life from the one he once expected to.
