A dog that “hates the groomer” often isn’t stubborn, they’re simply unprepared for strange places, strange tools, and unfamiliar handling. We sit down with Shannon and Tanya from Hound Therapy to show what it really takes to raise a dog that feels safe on grooming day, from the first puppy visit to the routines you reinforce at home. If you’ve ever wondered whether dogs can genuinely enjoy grooming, we explain why the answer can be yes.
We talk through practical dog grooming training that any pet owner can start today: short introduction appointments, ending sessions on a happy note, and building tolerance for nail trims and nail Dremel work before it becomes a stressful battle. We also get specific about handling practice, touching paws and toes, checking ears and faces, lifting lips, and calmly inspecting teeth so your dog learns that human hands are not a threat. For sound-sensitive dogs, we cover gentle desensitization to dryers, vacuums, and other loud noises using short bursts and positive reinforcement.
Then we zoom out to the big lever most people miss: consistency. Regular routines, predictable visits, and your own calm energy can make the grooming salon feel normal instead of scary. We share how to choose a patient professional groomer, why communication and a clear grooming plan matter, and how our “humanity over vanity” approach keeps grooming safer for dogs and easier for owners across North Texas. If this helps, subscribe, share the episode with a fellow pet parent, and leave a review so more dogs can have calmer grooming days.

00:00:03.680 --> 00:00:12.400
Welcome to Tale Talk Grooming Chronicles with Health Therapy, the podcast where we talk all things pet grooming, daycare, academy, and more.
00:00:12.720 --> 00:00:18.320
Hosted by Shannon and Tanya of House Therapy, serving pet owners across North Texas.
00:00:18.559 --> 00:00:26.719
We're here to share expert tips, hilarious pet stories, and the inside scoop on keeping your furry friends happy and healthy.
00:00:26.960 --> 00:00:30.000
Our motto, humanity over vanity.
00:00:30.160 --> 00:00:32.479
And don't worry, we don't fight.
00:00:32.640 --> 00:00:33.600
Let's get started.
00:00:39.840 --> 00:00:47.679
If you've ever wondered whether a dog can genuinely enjoy grooming day, Shannon and Tanya say yes.
00:00:48.479 --> 00:00:55.359
Um, and today we're breaking down the habits, handling, and early conditioning that makes it possible.
00:00:55.600 --> 00:00:56.719
Welcome back, everyone.
00:00:56.799 --> 00:01:04.719
I'm Sophia Yvette, co-host and producer, back in the studio with professional groomers at Hound Therapy, Shannon and Tanya.
00:01:04.959 --> 00:01:07.599
Hi, ladies, great to be back with you today.
00:01:07.760 --> 00:01:08.879
How's it been going?
00:01:09.200 --> 00:01:09.760
Very good.
00:01:09.920 --> 00:01:10.239
Thank you.
00:01:10.319 --> 00:01:12.959
We've had a busy couple days.
00:01:14.640 --> 00:01:15.040
Great.
00:01:15.200 --> 00:01:17.680
Well, it's always lovely to be back with you both.
00:01:17.760 --> 00:01:20.480
So let's just jump in to today's topic.
00:01:20.799 --> 00:01:24.319
Raising a dog that loves the groomer.
00:01:24.560 --> 00:01:27.920
What does that actually look like from your perspective?
00:01:28.159 --> 00:01:31.200
And where does a pet owner begin?
00:01:32.640 --> 00:01:39.359
So the first thing I'd like to say is dogs that love going to the dog groomers, uh, they weren't born that way.
00:01:39.680 --> 00:01:41.120
They were conditioned to do that.
00:01:41.519 --> 00:01:45.519
So if you think about it from that perspective, these are dogs that started early.
00:01:45.680 --> 00:01:50.239
Um, these are dogs that, you know, are are they they have no fear.
00:01:50.480 --> 00:01:59.920
They, you know, even if it was a rescue dog, if it's a rescue dog that's been out and socialized, these are the dogs that come in that are happy because they genuinely like going some places.
00:02:00.159 --> 00:02:06.319
Now, there are other dogs that I think, you know, have come out and gone places that they just don't like going out.
00:02:06.400 --> 00:02:11.680
And so those dogs aren't necessarily um unhappy about getting groomed.
00:02:11.840 --> 00:02:16.560
They just aren't as eager, but that's just a personality type.
00:02:16.719 --> 00:02:19.759
Um, I would say, you know, we we've talked about this in the past.
00:02:20.000 --> 00:02:23.120
Uh, you know, are dogs naturally afraid of dog grooming?
00:02:23.520 --> 00:02:25.919
No, they're not.
00:02:26.080 --> 00:02:28.080
Uh, they learn to be afraid.
00:02:28.240 --> 00:02:33.599
Uh, and and that's a lot of our human perspective put towards that dog.
00:02:33.680 --> 00:02:35.120
They're picking up that energy.
00:02:35.360 --> 00:02:35.599
Yeah.
00:02:35.759 --> 00:02:42.960
I would even say more of the afraid dogs aren't really afraid of the grooming itself because nine times out of ten, they can do fine once they're back.
00:02:43.120 --> 00:02:46.400
Um, it's usually going to an unknown place, is the scary part.
00:02:46.800 --> 00:02:48.560
And doing unknown procedures too.
00:02:48.639 --> 00:02:48.879
Yeah.
00:02:48.960 --> 00:02:54.240
So if they've not ever had the nails dremeled before, if they've not had them cut before, if they don't come very often.
00:02:54.400 --> 00:02:56.400
I mean, there's a lot of things that you can do.
00:02:56.560 --> 00:03:08.639
So introducing puppies to grooming is just number one if you have a puppy that's, you know, is as early as you can, you know, 12 weeks is usually by the time their their shots are all complete.
00:03:08.879 --> 00:03:10.719
Bring them in and just do the basics.
00:03:10.800 --> 00:03:11.919
Get them used to coming.
00:03:12.000 --> 00:03:13.280
Don't leave them there all day.
00:03:13.439 --> 00:03:14.479
Get them used to leaving.
00:03:14.719 --> 00:03:17.439
And I mean, with my puppy, we do her nails every week.
00:03:17.680 --> 00:03:19.360
Yeah, puppy nails grow very fast.
00:03:21.520 --> 00:03:32.479
Um, schedule short introduction appointments for dogs who may be a little bit more um, you know, they only get groomed once or twice a year, or it's uh maybe uh a getcha dog.
00:03:32.560 --> 00:03:40.639
You just, you know, you got a rescue puppy and uh or you've inherited an animal, you're not sure if they've gone or if they haven't gone.
00:03:40.800 --> 00:03:45.759
You know, just do some small micromanager, those little those little introductions here and there.
00:03:45.919 --> 00:03:46.560
Don't leave them.
00:03:46.719 --> 00:03:48.240
Set them up for success.
00:03:48.400 --> 00:03:51.439
Um, keep the sessions short and successful.
00:03:51.599 --> 00:03:53.120
We want to end on a happy note.
00:03:53.439 --> 00:03:56.479
Uh we want to train them that coming here is is is good.
00:03:56.800 --> 00:03:58.560
Practice safe handling at home.
00:03:58.719 --> 00:04:03.759
Um touch their feet, touch their ears, face, all of the body parts.
00:04:04.159 --> 00:04:06.400
Just touch them everywhere.
00:04:06.719 --> 00:04:08.719
Um and and get them used to it.
00:04:08.800 --> 00:04:20.319
So like take their little feet, mess with their toes, um, kind of manipulate those digits and make help them become comfortable with people touching their feet and their faces all the time.
00:04:20.560 --> 00:04:26.319
I make my my dog lay on her on her on his back and you know, he'll if he'll he'll chew a bone, I'll get in there.
00:04:26.480 --> 00:04:28.639
I'm like, come here, and he won't ever bring me a stick.
00:04:28.720 --> 00:04:31.600
Anything that's bad, he's he'll drop it before he gets to me.
00:04:31.680 --> 00:04:32.240
He's like, you know.
00:04:32.480 --> 00:04:33.120
I'm not supposed to have that.
00:04:33.600 --> 00:04:38.240
I wasn't doing anything, and I'll look at his mouth and I pull his little lips out and I search in there.
00:04:38.319 --> 00:04:40.639
I lift up his tongue and he just ah.
00:04:41.839 --> 00:04:45.759
And you know, he's like, I know there's nothing in there, but I mean, he lets me do it.
00:04:45.920 --> 00:04:46.800
I look at his teeth.
00:04:46.959 --> 00:05:00.160
Uh, it's also gonna help you as they get older to look at their teeth, to, you know, inspect if they have any mouth or face damage, to inspect their paws if you've, you know, if they've stepped on something or if there's something inside of them, they're gonna let you handle them.
00:05:00.319 --> 00:05:04.399
So, you know, learning to get them used to that uh is is good.
00:05:04.560 --> 00:05:05.439
Loud noises.
00:05:05.759 --> 00:05:14.800
Um, you know, if you try if you have a blender at home or a car, something like a vacuum, you know, dogs that haven't heard this, just short bursts, let them know it's okay, give them a treat.
00:05:14.879 --> 00:05:18.160
You know, these are all noises that they should ignore.
00:05:18.800 --> 00:05:23.279
Uh otherwise, it's a high stress environment with a high stress trigger.
00:05:23.439 --> 00:05:23.600
Yeah.
00:05:23.839 --> 00:05:26.319
So, you know, don't tease them with a water hose.
00:05:26.480 --> 00:05:30.399
Don't um it it's it is funny when they snap at the water hose.
00:05:30.480 --> 00:05:33.439
It's funny when they snap at a lawnmower and stuff like that until it's not.
00:05:33.839 --> 00:05:35.680
Uh, and it's definitely never funny for us.
00:05:35.759 --> 00:05:43.920
It's a learned behavior that they have carried on for grooming and it makes everybody's life that much more complicated.
00:05:44.240 --> 00:05:48.000
So don't complicate things.
00:05:49.439 --> 00:05:52.480
Um keep home practice positive.
00:05:52.720 --> 00:05:57.040
Um, you know, if you're gonna you're gonna you should be touching their feet, face and all that anyway.
00:05:57.439 --> 00:05:58.560
End it on a high note.
00:05:58.720 --> 00:06:02.000
Um if they don't react in any way, shape, or form, give them a treat.
00:06:02.319 --> 00:06:03.759
Um they're good boys, make it run.
00:06:04.079 --> 00:06:05.040
Yeah, make it fun.
00:06:06.240 --> 00:06:16.160
And we've covered a lot of great information so far, but how does consistency between home routines and salon routines help the dog relax?
00:06:17.360 --> 00:06:18.480
Excellent question.
00:06:18.639 --> 00:06:23.040
Consistency helps with everything, uh, in my opinion, for all things in life.
00:06:23.360 --> 00:06:24.000
Everything.
00:06:24.480 --> 00:06:26.480
You know, it's it becomes a habit.
00:06:26.720 --> 00:06:39.519
So doing something on a regular basis at the same time, all the time, will just help your dog to get used to this is when we're doing this, and they're gonna learn to accept it, they're gonna follow suit, it's gonna become part of their daily routine.
00:06:39.680 --> 00:06:42.560
Um, so it's not something that's new and introduced.
00:06:42.800 --> 00:06:46.800
Being consistent is is excellent with training in general.
00:06:46.879 --> 00:06:53.360
If you're trying to teach your dog to sit, stay down, if you want to walk to the door before your dog does, be consistent about it.
00:06:53.519 --> 00:06:59.519
It does take a little extra effort for the first three to four weeks, but that's really about it.
00:06:59.759 --> 00:07:04.160
After that, it almost helps you to stay consistent as well as your dog.
00:07:04.240 --> 00:07:07.439
So if your dog is going to learn your social cues.
00:07:07.759 --> 00:07:19.199
Um, if you come in consistently to the grimmer and you feel comfortable with the grimmers that you've chosen and the shop that you've you've deemed, you know, hey, this is clean, it's neat, and it's, you know, they like my dog.
00:07:19.360 --> 00:07:20.160
I like coming here.
00:07:20.240 --> 00:07:23.839
It's not far from my house, you know, you're not stressed out getting to it.
00:07:24.000 --> 00:07:28.720
Your dog's gonna come and have that same kind of positive energy that you're giving off.
00:07:28.800 --> 00:07:33.600
Like, oh, we're going to the grimmer's today, and you're like, secretly, I'm getting my nails done.
00:07:33.839 --> 00:07:36.000
So, yay.
00:07:36.399 --> 00:07:38.079
But you're going to get your hair done.
00:07:38.240 --> 00:07:44.240
You know, I mean, your dog, your dog understands, but he doesn't, he doesn't care because he's he's getting the same stuff done here.
00:07:44.399 --> 00:07:46.879
So it's it really is about that flow.
00:07:46.959 --> 00:08:03.839
So that consistency does help not only with your dog, but with yourself as well, being consistent with uh whether it's I I hope it's with words too, but dogs you learn your phrases, they learn your words, but they also learn your pitch and your tone uh as well as your emotions.
00:08:03.920 --> 00:08:08.079
And and they really read into that quite deeply.
00:08:08.399 --> 00:08:19.279
So um being able to, you know, to pause the to pass that positive off versus you know absorbing the negative for you, it's just it's it's super helpful.
00:08:19.680 --> 00:08:23.839
Now, any final words of wisdom before we close out?
00:08:25.040 --> 00:08:34.399
Ooh, um, I would say make sure that you are responding appropriately for your dog's needs.
00:08:34.559 --> 00:08:41.200
So if you're nervous about something and you're not sure, maybe check it out without your dog first.
00:08:41.600 --> 00:08:44.960
Um, know that you're gonna have to do the common things, right?
00:08:45.039 --> 00:08:46.879
They don't, their nails, their pads.
00:08:47.039 --> 00:08:53.440
At some point in time, most dogs need to go to the vet or to the groomer at least once or twice a year.
00:08:53.600 --> 00:08:55.600
Um, at some point in time in their life.
00:08:55.759 --> 00:08:58.799
So getting them used to that is help, helpful.
00:08:59.120 --> 00:09:05.440
Um, choose a patient groomer if you have a dog that is um on the higher strength side.
00:09:05.600 --> 00:09:06.159
Yeah.
00:09:06.799 --> 00:09:08.559
Practice handling at home.
00:09:08.720 --> 00:09:19.919
Uh, you know, a dog that that loves um acceptability and accountability of what you're doing to it and takes your lead, it's just gonna be better all the way around.
00:09:20.080 --> 00:09:24.559
That way, even if something is new to you, um, it's going to be easier.
00:09:24.720 --> 00:09:32.720
Like for us at Home Therapy, we discuss a grooming plan in full, in great detail, what we're doing, especially the first time.
00:09:32.799 --> 00:09:45.200
Not necessarily ongoing, but the first time you're here, or if we do big changes, or if you've done big changes, we will sit down and have that conversation uh with your, you know, with you as an owner.
00:09:45.279 --> 00:09:46.720
We like to educate here.
00:09:46.879 --> 00:09:59.519
So if you have a groomer that's used to that or it just doesn't have the time for it, ask them to say, hey, can you stop and take a minute and find a time that's good for them to chat and then and set that aside to make yourself feel more comfortable as well.
00:10:00.080 --> 00:10:07.519
Well, thank you both for such helpful insights for owners who want the grooming day to feel calm instead of chaotic.
00:10:07.679 --> 00:10:09.679
We'll see everyone next time.
00:10:13.279 --> 00:10:16.879
