Joy can feel out of reach when your hormones are shifting, your stress is high, and your brain won’t stop narrating everything that’s going wrong. We want to flip that script with a grounded, practical idea: joy isn’t something you “find” later when life finally calms down. Joy is something we create on purpose, and it can coexist with grief, chronic illness, parenting stress, and all the messy transitions that often show up in perimenopause and menopause.
We break down the difference between happiness, pleasure, contentment, and joy, then bring in positive psychology through Barbara Fredrickson’s broaden-and-build theory. Positive emotions don’t just feel good, they broaden what you notice and what you believe is possible, then help you build real resources over time like resilience, connection, creativity, and confidence. From there, we connect the dots to neuroplasticity and the negativity bias, including why your brain defaults to worst-case thinking and how small, repeated mindset shifts can literally create new pathways.
You’ll hear our favorite ways to cultivate joy in real life: reframing “I have to” into “I get to,” using gratitude to steady your nervous system, choosing relationships that energize you, and practicing savoring so good moments actually land in your body. We also share a simple 20-second joy practice you can do even on your hardest days, plus a joy list idea and a seven-day joy challenge to help you stay consistent.

And let's get into today's episode.
00:01:30.560 --> 00:01:32.239
Welcome back, everybody.
00:01:32.480 --> 00:01:41.200
This is episode 11, uh, Joy on Purpose and How to Cultivate More Joy in every season of life.
00:01:41.680 --> 00:01:52.400
And um to begin with, really, we want to point out that joy really isn't something that you have to find, but something that we create in ourselves.
00:01:52.640 --> 00:01:55.840
Um, when was the last time you experienced joy?
00:01:56.079 --> 00:02:04.000
Not because something big happened or you were on vacation, but simply because you were fully present uh in your life.
00:02:04.239 --> 00:02:04.879
Yeah.
00:02:05.200 --> 00:02:12.319
So now that we're in back to school season, I feel like my joy is walking my kids to school.
00:02:12.639 --> 00:02:16.000
So my my son goes to school nearby.
00:02:16.080 --> 00:02:36.000
And so my daughter every morning, like a happy butterfly, is like, I want to go on this walk too, you know, and it's become a very joyful routine of just noticing the worms on the sidewalk and noticing all the things on the way and getting, you know, outside and having that sunshine and all the things.
00:02:36.240 --> 00:02:40.159
So yeah, that's been a joyful practice for me.
00:02:40.400 --> 00:02:40.560
Yeah.
00:02:40.879 --> 00:02:41.759
The last few weeks.
00:02:41.919 --> 00:02:42.400
Yeah.
00:02:42.800 --> 00:02:50.639
I think there are some distinctions in the wording around joy that we um just want to point out.
00:02:51.120 --> 00:02:58.639
And one of them is happiness that we often use in a circumstance kind of way.
00:02:58.719 --> 00:03:11.599
You know, we associate happiness with um, oh, I'm gonna be happy when I pass that exam or get that raise, or when I'm on this trip, or I'm going on this vacation.
00:03:12.000 --> 00:03:16.000
Or like happy of I look a certain way in a moment, right?
00:03:16.400 --> 00:03:17.039
Exactly.
00:03:17.680 --> 00:03:25.840
It's usually linked to some kind of achievement or or future prospects that we um create in our minds.
00:03:26.479 --> 00:03:35.039
Um pleasure is is something that's uh just a short term, you know, dopamine fix uh feels good in the moment.
00:03:35.759 --> 00:03:38.639
The ice cream or whatever, something short.
00:03:38.879 --> 00:03:39.680
Absolutely.
00:03:40.159 --> 00:03:47.919
And um contentment is appreciating what's here rather than you know chasing the next thing.
00:03:48.159 --> 00:03:52.960
And this episode we really talk um more mostly about joy and contentment.
00:03:53.120 --> 00:04:02.560
Joy as something um a really deeper positive emotional state that can coexist with difficulty.
00:04:03.840 --> 00:04:04.400
Absolutely.
00:04:04.560 --> 00:04:14.960
And I think one thing to remember is like this coexisting, but it also doesn't mean that we're pretending that life isn't hard, right?
00:04:15.039 --> 00:04:28.959
It's it's not this false sense of joy, it's a deeper emotion that's felt that it has to be intentionally cultivated and intentionally thought about to really evoke joy within our bodies.
00:04:29.360 --> 00:04:31.759
And they're not mutually exclusive, you know.
00:04:31.839 --> 00:04:40.560
We can experience them both, especially our generation as we're going through you know, aging and and dying parents.
00:04:40.720 --> 00:04:51.279
Um, there's a lot of grief, um, a lot of transitions, but we can still experience joy and and even with that grief kind of coexisting.
00:04:51.600 --> 00:04:52.079
Absolutely.
00:04:52.240 --> 00:04:52.639
Yeah.
00:04:52.879 --> 00:05:11.839
So in positive psychology in the late 90s, Barbara Frederickson came up with this broaden and build theory and has several publications on it, where it really is not, it's the this concept of emotions don't just feel good, but they change what we're able to see and do.
00:05:12.160 --> 00:05:29.759
So as you broaden and build, so I'm gonna talk a little bit about those things, like as you broaden, which is like expanding your inventory of thoughts and actions, um, expanding more joy, love, contentment, happiness, interest, right?
00:05:30.000 --> 00:05:42.560
As you expand that, so maybe it's increasing the amount of time, maybe it's doing more frequently, maybe it's the intention behind it or the lack of being distracted, right?
00:05:42.720 --> 00:05:44.079
Being fully present in that moment.
00:05:44.160 --> 00:05:48.399
You're broadening your joy and then you're building upon it.
00:05:48.560 --> 00:06:11.360
So it's kind of like this layer effect of as you broaden it, all of a sudden you're building more connections, more relationships, more of those opportunities in your life, where it evokes this excitement around adventure and creativity and fun and all of those um physical things that we do that really evoke more joy as well.
00:06:11.759 --> 00:06:19.600
Yeah, and I think this um broaden and build theory really explains uh neuroplasticity, the concept of that.
00:06:19.839 --> 00:06:28.959
And if you've not heard of that, that's really um the science of um how our minds are really um malleable.
00:06:29.199 --> 00:06:47.199
We can change the way that we're thinking, and we can even change with the way that we're thinking what we manifest in our bodies, which is um there's a lot of studies on this, you know, how we create a physical reality with our thoughts.
00:06:47.360 --> 00:07:00.399
Um, for example, uh, the if we're looking at studies that utilize placebos, we know that they're extremely powerful because of the belief that this is a medicine that will help me.
00:07:00.560 --> 00:07:11.759
Um, and when they're taking it, this belief sets off these reactions in the body that really do help them and and uh uh help their symptoms and help them get better.
00:07:11.920 --> 00:07:21.519
So the placebo effect is a is an explanation of uh or or a way of neuroplasticity, the mind affecting the body.
00:07:21.680 --> 00:07:30.720
And neuroplasticity just means that we have the ability to change um routes uh in the brain or ways of thinking.
00:07:30.959 --> 00:07:56.879
So a lot of times um me, I'm personally I'm a total pessimist, I'm a negative thinker, and I know that about myself, and my mind feeds me um nonsense all day, you know, thoughts like, oh, this is so stressful, or oh my gosh, I have to do all these things, and um, this is too hard, or you know, I can't do this, all these negative thoughts.
00:07:57.040 --> 00:08:04.959
Um, and I have learned to recognize these thoughts and stop for a moment and change them.
00:08:05.120 --> 00:08:10.160
So we have that ability to change them, and we're gonna talk a whole lot more about that.
00:08:10.560 --> 00:08:31.920
Yeah, so ultimately joy creates these urges to build upon recreating these new pathways in our brain for neuroplasticity, but also creating more play, exploration, creation, connection, curiosity, savoring, and even feeling more social and engaging with other people.
00:08:32.080 --> 00:08:40.720
And that I think is you know why we're talking about it, because you know, we do have women that we've worked with that are in all seasons of life, right?
00:08:40.799 --> 00:08:56.240
Like they've there's some that are navigating young kids, there's some that have empty nesters, there's some that, you know, um have gone through chronic health concerns and you know perimenopause, right?
00:08:56.320 --> 00:09:02.960
Like they've all had layers of hormone changes in addition to life changes, right?
00:09:03.039 --> 00:09:06.000
And and just circumstantial shifts.
00:09:06.240 --> 00:09:15.440
And this is where you know, joy in each season and throughout, like it can coexist with with the negative emotions.
00:09:15.600 --> 00:09:20.399
Um, and fun fact on that is there's like three to four negative emotions for every positive emotion, right?
00:09:20.559 --> 00:09:29.679
So that's where our negativity usually is at the forefront, you know, this comparison, this judgment, this like, you know, it's it's safe in our brain.
00:09:29.759 --> 00:09:33.200
It's easy to go back to because there's so many negative emotions out there, right?
00:09:33.600 --> 00:09:45.840
Um, but you we have to be intentional in these seasons of instead of you know new mom stress because baby's always crying, you know, I I get to enjoy these moments with my child.
00:09:46.000 --> 00:09:53.039
Um, and re reframing some of those thoughts like you were talking about um in every season.
00:09:53.200 --> 00:09:57.039
So even, you know, my kids, I've raised them the best that I could, right?
00:09:57.120 --> 00:09:58.799
Like when they're out of the house, right?
00:09:58.879 --> 00:10:01.200
Those those shifts as a mom.
00:10:01.440 --> 00:10:05.840
Um, but also in chronic, you know, chronic health conditions.
00:10:06.000 --> 00:10:18.080
I think sometimes that that can be difficult to choose and and be intentional in fostering this joy because it has been a hard journey.
00:10:18.240 --> 00:10:24.639
There has been, you know, gaslighting or lack of answers or more issues that have arose.
00:10:25.440 --> 00:10:26.399
True suffering, right?
00:10:27.039 --> 00:10:37.600
The symptoms are real, and and we have a few clients that have experienced significant suffering and and chronic illness for years.
00:10:37.759 --> 00:10:46.399
Um, and this this negative mindset is definitely part of um staying in this um sick state.
00:10:46.559 --> 00:10:58.799
You know, we we if we stay in this negativity loop and we tell ourselves, I am so sick, I'm feeling awful, you know, all these negative thoughts, you will create that in your body and maintain it.
00:10:58.960 --> 00:11:00.960
It's not gonna get better.
00:11:01.279 --> 00:11:02.159
Absolutely.
00:11:02.480 --> 00:11:03.120
Absolutely.
00:11:03.279 --> 00:11:15.919
And so it's really the goal of of this episode, I would say, is like being aware that we have to leave this door open for joy and we have to also cultivate and be intentional about joy.
00:11:16.240 --> 00:11:17.440
Because it doesn't just happen.
00:11:17.600 --> 00:11:21.039
It's not just gonna all of a sudden you wake up one day and you feel joy, right?
00:11:21.360 --> 00:11:27.600
It has to be fostered and it has to be um really built within every person.
00:11:27.679 --> 00:11:30.240
And it's so different to each person as well.
00:11:30.559 --> 00:11:38.000
So if you're finding yourself, you know, as you listen to this, thinking of like, you know, when's the last time I played, right?
00:11:38.159 --> 00:11:40.399
Like, when is the last time you've played?
00:11:40.559 --> 00:11:43.039
You know, like just played.
00:11:43.440 --> 00:11:44.080
Yeah.
00:11:44.399 --> 00:12:05.600
That's uh that's I think joy, um, you know, the the parts of play and creativity, creating something and um adventuring and exploring something, those are kind of higher level functions that we don't get to when we're stuck in this fight or flight, yeah, stress, negativity spiral.
00:12:05.759 --> 00:12:06.000
Yeah.
00:12:06.080 --> 00:12:08.240
Um or responsibilities, right?
00:12:08.320 --> 00:12:11.200
Like as a mom business owner, right?
00:12:11.279 --> 00:12:14.720
It's like task, task, task all day.
00:12:14.960 --> 00:12:17.200
And so where was the time for play?
00:12:17.519 --> 00:12:17.840
Right.
00:12:18.159 --> 00:12:18.720
Exactly.
00:12:18.879 --> 00:12:19.200
Yeah.
00:12:19.440 --> 00:12:23.519
And often those are, and and I know this about myself.
00:12:23.919 --> 00:12:36.320
We drop these and and uh instead clean the kitchen or um focus on uh doing groceries or doing some other task, you know, that's on our task list.
00:12:36.480 --> 00:12:38.399
But is it really essential?
00:12:38.559 --> 00:12:39.200
Probably not.
00:12:39.440 --> 00:12:42.240
The kitchen can get cleaned up later or in the morning.
00:12:42.480 --> 00:12:51.840
Um, but this this intentionality about being present um with the people around you, you know, or with yourself, whatever that looks like.
00:12:52.080 --> 00:12:57.279
But um we don't always have to be productive and functioning.
00:12:57.440 --> 00:13:15.600
It's this is also a society problem, you know, of us um learning really from little that we are only respected and appreciated and can only be happy if we're 100% productive at all, you know, every waking minute.
00:13:15.759 --> 00:13:19.519
And we have to be busy as possibly, as we possibly can.
00:13:19.679 --> 00:13:25.440
And um yeah, I feel like this is going back to our previous episode on like nervous system regulation, right?
00:13:25.519 --> 00:13:44.720
I think there's a there's a direct correlation between our nervous system and our ability to foster joy because when we do feel you know stressed out, it's very difficult to walk away from that task list and actually do something for you that's going to bring joy, right?
00:13:45.200 --> 00:13:57.840
Um something that you know comes up in some of my coaching calls with our clients that I think is worth to discuss is asking that question of like, what do you love about yourself or what do you like to do for fun?
00:13:58.480 --> 00:14:03.600
Those two questions they're often very difficult for clients to answer.
00:14:04.000 --> 00:14:04.480
Really hard.
00:14:05.039 --> 00:14:08.399
Especially in this perimenopausal menopausal group, right?
00:14:08.639 --> 00:14:09.600
Yeah, absolutely.
00:14:09.759 --> 00:14:16.960
And I I think there's this is like a the first sign of okay, where can we put more play in our life?
00:14:17.120 --> 00:14:19.519
Where can we put more exploration in our lives?
00:14:19.759 --> 00:14:26.879
And what recreating and finding who you are now, because who you are now is not who you were when you were 20.
00:14:27.039 --> 00:14:30.799
Who you are now is not, you know, who you're going to be when you're 60, right?
00:14:30.879 --> 00:14:37.120
There's this in-between ages of life that I think are so important to find what do you like now in the moment?
00:14:37.279 --> 00:14:39.759
What do you like in this journey?
00:14:39.840 --> 00:14:41.600
Um, and who are you right now?
00:14:41.679 --> 00:14:41.840
Yeah.
00:14:42.080 --> 00:14:43.519
Because that should evolve.
00:14:43.600 --> 00:14:44.480
That's growth, right?
00:14:44.639 --> 00:14:46.240
Like we should, should.
00:14:46.480 --> 00:14:50.159
We should we we do evolve as humans, right?
00:14:50.639 --> 00:14:54.399
And our interest and what we like and what we've learned, right?
00:14:54.480 --> 00:14:56.960
There's there's always going to be change there.
00:14:57.679 --> 00:15:07.360
And so, how do we foster more of this love and self-joy and you know, feeling more comfortable in who we are in this moment?
00:15:08.480 --> 00:15:24.799
I think it's really um a phase of reinvention, this you know, perimenopausal, menopausal transition, where our kids are older, you know, the the big task of raising the children and establishing a career are are done.
00:15:24.960 --> 00:15:30.080
Um, and we're we're having to re-establish what what are our values?
00:15:30.240 --> 00:15:31.120
What do we want?
00:15:31.279 --> 00:15:35.919
You know, what where do we want to be in in 10, 15, 20 years?
00:15:36.159 --> 00:15:38.639
What plans for the future?
00:15:38.879 --> 00:15:48.000
Um, and and this really um goes together with with finding out what what is it that you need and want.
00:15:48.480 --> 00:15:58.320
Um, I just discovered uh rock climbing again that I hadn't done in decades and thought, well, I'd give it another try.
00:15:58.399 --> 00:16:03.120
You know, I have no idea if this is gonna be um fun or stressing me out more.
00:16:03.440 --> 00:16:04.639
I'm afraid of height.
00:16:04.720 --> 00:16:09.039
So for me, it's a huge deal to climb very high and let myself drop.
00:16:09.759 --> 00:16:15.519
And I did it, and it was the most fun I'd had in years, and really love it.
00:16:15.600 --> 00:16:17.519
Um, and I'm really getting back into that.
00:16:17.600 --> 00:16:32.960
So it's a it's a thing I definitely want to keep doing, but finding these things and uh you know, allowing this um to try new or old things again to to define what it is that you want to do, what it is that you you need.
00:16:33.120 --> 00:16:34.720
Yeah, absolutely.
00:16:34.960 --> 00:16:44.879
And on that note, I think it's so important to consider what holds you back from joy sometimes, maybe in that relationship realm.
00:16:45.120 --> 00:16:54.799
So imagine you're going climbing, but then you're with a friend that's just negative about everything, like, oh, this is uncomfortable, oh, this hurts my hands, oh, my toes don't fit right in these shoes.
00:16:54.879 --> 00:17:02.399
Like that completely changes that joyful experience if you're surrounded by the negative emotions.
00:17:02.559 --> 00:17:16.240
And so in this perimenopause phase, oftentimes we have less patience for you know the negative and the, you know, the extra and excessive noise, ourselves, right?
00:17:16.799 --> 00:17:32.319
And a lot of that is hormonal shifts, but also that's bringing awareness to things that maybe we were just ignoring, or maybe they were there, but now they're really irritating us um as far as relationships.
00:17:32.400 --> 00:17:46.240
So you know, and the the funny thing is that I went climbing with my good friend Mimi, who is actually a relationship coach, and we're gonna be um having an episode about relationships coming up pretty soon.
00:17:46.319 --> 00:17:50.000
So Mimi Navel is gonna be on the episode.
00:17:50.160 --> 00:17:52.160
Yeah, um, we had a lot of fun climbing.
00:17:52.319 --> 00:17:53.839
Yeah, no negativity on that.
00:17:54.240 --> 00:18:00.000
Yeah, well, so in the meantime, it's like if you're struggling with joy, think about who energizes you, right?
00:18:00.160 --> 00:18:01.200
Who do you want to be around?
00:18:01.359 --> 00:18:04.079
What personalities, who's grounding?
00:18:04.400 --> 00:18:14.799
What um person in your life always is that calm, you know, and that you know you can always have a good time because it's just like roll with the flow, right?
00:18:15.440 --> 00:18:22.880
Who is always full of laughter, you know, and and those types of things are great ways to cultivate joy in our relationships.
00:18:23.119 --> 00:18:34.319
So yeah, I know we'll we'll deep dive into that here in a future episode, but yeah, so important um to choose choose well who you're gonna spend your time with.
00:18:34.640 --> 00:18:35.200
Yeah.
00:18:35.440 --> 00:18:37.119
So let's get practical.
00:18:37.279 --> 00:18:42.480
You know, we're we're talking about joy, but what can we actually do to cultivate joy?
00:18:42.559 --> 00:18:43.759
What does that look like?
00:18:44.079 --> 00:19:00.160
For me, like I was mentioning in the beginning, it's really uh it's been the biggest change has been um shifting the mindset, just having awareness of the negativity, and then um pausing at that time and rewording it.
00:19:00.319 --> 00:19:06.960
So I shift my I have to's into I get to because I chose this.
00:19:07.200 --> 00:19:11.680
I chose this life, I chose this profession, I love what I do.
00:19:12.000 --> 00:19:21.440
And I can with with this simple shift of saying I get to do this today, I am a completely it's it's a 180 turn.
00:19:21.839 --> 00:19:25.119
So much happiness and joy created.
00:19:25.599 --> 00:19:32.480
And over time, this kind of slows down and shuts down this negativity talk in my mind.
00:19:32.640 --> 00:19:41.200
And we we talked a little bit about neuroplasticity and how the mind always by default goes down the negative pathway.
00:19:41.440 --> 00:19:51.200
But when we create a positivity or a positive experience, that pathway becomes broader and the more walk down one where the other one overgrows.
00:19:51.359 --> 00:19:58.720
So um in everybody has to find something for themselves to do um to create joy.
00:19:58.880 --> 00:20:00.960
But um, what is something you do?
00:20:01.119 --> 00:20:01.440
Yeah.
00:20:01.680 --> 00:20:02.240
Melissa.
00:20:02.799 --> 00:20:07.359
I think um, I mean, there's several things that I think create joy.
00:20:07.519 --> 00:20:11.359
I think to me, it's like reminding, it's like gratitude, right?
00:20:11.440 --> 00:20:28.880
It's reminding, like I do keep a daily like journal of just notes of what I'm grateful for or when things, especially if I notice I'm getting negative in my mind, I go back to it's like a calm journal of being more calm, um, is what it's called.
00:20:29.119 --> 00:20:36.799
But it really is like a gratitude of appreciation and digging deep as to like, you know, who you are ultimately.
00:20:37.359 --> 00:20:41.359
Um, to me to cultivate joy though, I get energy from being around people.
00:20:41.599 --> 00:20:53.920
So I think that's like I enjoy our, you know, my husband and I try to do monthly date nights and that connection of doing, you know, let's go bowling or let's go axe throwing or let's go, you know, do something, a hike.
00:20:54.079 --> 00:20:55.839
Like I went for a few years ago my birthday.
00:20:55.920 --> 00:20:57.519
I was like, I just want to go for a hike.
00:20:57.680 --> 00:21:06.240
Like that's what I want to do on my birthday, you know, and those are intentional choices to help cultivate the joy, right?
00:21:06.400 --> 00:21:06.720
Yeah.
00:21:06.960 --> 00:21:10.720
Um, and yeah, like I similar on the reframing.
00:21:10.799 --> 00:21:20.640
I mean, I I do this all the time with with clients when I hear the shouldas, and I'll catch if I say it, I catch myself instead of I should.
00:21:20.799 --> 00:21:26.160
Like, how can I re restate this in my head in a different way?
00:21:26.480 --> 00:21:30.640
Um and I think that's so important because that's the that's the awareness, right?
00:21:30.720 --> 00:21:37.279
That's that's the nervous system in a state that you can hear yourself and be aware to make those shifts, you know.
00:21:37.440 --> 00:21:37.920
So yeah.
00:21:38.240 --> 00:21:54.559
Yeah, and that I think the concept of of savoring is is really key is this um awareness of when there is a joyful moment um and really uh taking uh taking the time to really acknowledgeing and and savoring it.
00:21:54.640 --> 00:21:59.839
So for example, the the morning coffee um instead of multi tactic.
00:22:00.160 --> 00:22:03.440
Asking and checking your email or scrolling or something at the same time.
00:22:03.519 --> 00:22:21.920
Just sit there with your coffee and look um at the beautiful mountain range or you know, something that um and it doesn't have to be for 30 minutes, it can be for one, one minute, you know, it could be for five minutes, it could be thinking a positive gratitude thought at that moment, right?
00:22:22.240 --> 00:22:26.160
Or noticing something or walking barefoot in your garden, right?
00:22:26.240 --> 00:22:29.839
And noticing little ants or bugs, whatever it is.
00:22:30.079 --> 00:22:36.079
There's those are moments of savoring that help foster this joy.
00:22:36.319 --> 00:22:38.640
Yeah, presence, definitely.
00:22:38.960 --> 00:22:59.519
So there is um the joy practice or or how we can foster that is really when you notice something feels good, you stop, you notice it, you take a breath, you name it, um, and stay a few seconds longer than you normally would in that sensation.
00:23:00.000 --> 00:23:08.640
Um, and maybe you even word it for yourself, oh, this is really beautiful, or this is this feels so good right now, and really happy right now.
00:23:08.960 --> 00:23:40.960
Yeah, and Frederickson that we mentioned earlier with her um broaden and build theory in positive psychology, she also talks a little bit about like contentment, and that's where this savoring comes into because contentment's creating this urge for savoring and also for like integrating this into your routine, into your life, into this craving for more, which is that concept of you know, you've rewired these pathways in your brain over time, because this is not an overnight practice.
00:23:41.200 --> 00:23:48.079
This is a lifelong learned um journey of self-awareness and intention, right?
00:23:48.319 --> 00:23:54.079
Um, but as you do cultivate them and bring them, like it attracts more positive people in your life.
00:23:54.240 --> 00:24:09.839
It attracts um, you know, it makes you want to do more journeys and exploration and getting out and not leading with fear or negativity, but with curiosity and with this abundance of, ooh, this will be fun.
00:24:10.000 --> 00:24:15.200
This is a new unknown territory, but I'm gonna, you know, have so much fun, right?
00:24:15.279 --> 00:24:15.599
Yeah.
00:24:15.839 --> 00:24:16.559
So yeah.
00:24:16.880 --> 00:24:39.440
And this is so just to um recap this 20-second joy practice, this is something that everybody can do, you know, even if you are really chronically ill or you are super symptomatic and you're in some deep hormone imbalance and you're working through all these things, you can still do this.
00:24:39.599 --> 00:24:45.200
You can still practice this, and it's a very crucial piece in your healing journey.
00:24:45.279 --> 00:24:54.480
You know, if we leave this aside in functional medicine, we we always have to address the nervous system and the joy um piece.
00:24:54.559 --> 00:25:00.720
And and if we neglect it, healing will be stunted or not happen at all.
00:25:00.960 --> 00:25:02.480
So it's very, very crucial.
00:25:02.799 --> 00:25:08.079
And there's quite a few publications, right, on these this emotional connection to our physical health, right?
00:25:08.240 --> 00:25:12.960
Highly depressed individuals often have heart concerns and heart issues.
00:25:13.200 --> 00:25:13.440
Of course.
00:25:13.680 --> 00:25:19.680
Highly anxious, always there's a correlation, not always, but oftentimes there's a correlation with digestive, right?
00:25:19.839 --> 00:25:22.720
In your digestive system and some type of imbalance there.
00:25:22.799 --> 00:25:30.319
And so there's this is you know been researched and studied and proven that our emotional health matters.
00:25:30.640 --> 00:25:34.720
And it if we do not tend to it, that's that's our cost.
00:25:34.880 --> 00:25:36.480
Our cost is our physical health.
00:25:37.119 --> 00:25:46.400
And so, you know, there's there's often even looking at that from a reverse of okay, my stomach's always upset, like things are going on.
00:25:46.559 --> 00:25:48.640
Like, where is anxiety in my life?
00:25:48.880 --> 00:25:49.200
Right?
00:25:49.440 --> 00:25:52.079
Where is the depression in my life with my heart?
00:25:52.240 --> 00:25:55.039
Like, what what can I choose differently?
00:25:55.279 --> 00:25:55.759
You know?
00:25:56.319 --> 00:25:59.359
Um, so absolutely very important.
00:25:59.599 --> 00:26:03.839
I think another point too with joy is like it doesn't have to be productive.
00:26:04.079 --> 00:26:19.920
We you touched briefly on that at the very beginning of we have this this uh ingrained in us of especially as women, like do more, you've got to accomplish all these things in a day, just being like sitting and chilling is just lazy, right?
00:26:20.559 --> 00:26:22.160
But actually it's not, right?
00:26:22.240 --> 00:26:27.680
It it doesn't, and this joy concept is not does not have to be productive.
00:26:27.839 --> 00:26:28.240
Absolutely.
00:26:28.400 --> 00:26:30.559
It can just be finding these moments.
00:26:30.880 --> 00:26:35.279
Even better when it's not exactly like I mean you can have productive joy, right?
00:26:35.359 --> 00:26:42.799
If you're working out and that brings you joy for you, yeah, but um yeah, the the non-productive kind.
00:26:43.039 --> 00:26:46.640
Yeah, well, it's kind of like the example I gave earlier of walking my son to school, right?
00:26:47.119 --> 00:26:50.480
I could look at that on like oh, so many steps per day, yes.
00:26:50.640 --> 00:26:52.799
But is that the motivator on why I'm doing it?
00:26:53.599 --> 00:27:00.240
No, like the motivator is this is a fun, great, you know, time to spend quality time just chatting.
00:27:00.319 --> 00:27:07.039
There's no walking on my phone because I would trip on the sidewalk, like you know, and we're just talking and walking and noticing.
00:27:07.279 --> 00:27:11.759
And yeah, that's the beauty of that, you know, 10-minute.
00:27:12.720 --> 00:27:22.559
I think of um some good, good song coming on, and you just have a little dance off in the kitchen or um silliness, you know.
00:27:23.359 --> 00:27:38.640
Um dinner, we talked about that earlier, you know, sitting down with your family without distraction and just um enjoying each other's company, really being present and talking um during meals.
00:27:39.279 --> 00:27:40.319
Absolutely.
00:27:40.720 --> 00:27:42.880
So, yeah, it's it's fun.
00:27:43.519 --> 00:27:51.119
And if you don't know what's fun in your life, like explore and figure out what's fun because that's where you're gonna also find more joy.
00:27:51.920 --> 00:27:52.559
Exactly.
00:27:53.440 --> 00:28:02.240
And then um really what is a great way of practicing more joy is to create your own joy list.
00:28:02.400 --> 00:28:02.640
Yeah.
00:28:02.799 --> 00:28:14.480
So we're gonna have a an attachment to this episode with a just a sample joy list with with different um things you can do that don't have to take a lot of time.
00:28:14.720 --> 00:28:17.279
One to five minutes is is enough.
00:28:17.680 --> 00:28:21.440
And you can use that as an inspiration to make your own joy list.
00:28:21.599 --> 00:28:23.440
Yes, I highly recommend.
00:28:23.839 --> 00:28:24.880
Absolutely.
00:28:25.200 --> 00:28:33.680
And we're also gonna leave you with a joy challenge that will launch on our social media channels in this week.
00:28:33.839 --> 00:28:40.559
So it's gonna be a seven-day joy challenge where each day you'll have a task, something you can do, something that's easy.
00:28:40.799 --> 00:28:42.319
And so be sure to follow us.
00:28:42.480 --> 00:28:43.599
Those are also in the show notes.
00:28:43.759 --> 00:28:46.559
Be sure to follow our social media channels because you'll see that.
00:28:46.640 --> 00:28:48.720
Um, and we'll do it along with you.
00:28:49.039 --> 00:28:50.480
Yeah, absolutely.
00:28:50.799 --> 00:28:57.119
Um, so yeah, to wrap up here, um I want to leave you with some questions.
00:28:57.519 --> 00:29:02.000
What used to bring me joy that I've stopped making space for?
00:29:02.160 --> 00:29:12.000
I think this one is a really good one to ponder as you take this episode with you and are intentionally cultivating more joy.
00:29:12.240 --> 00:29:12.720
Yeah.
00:29:13.039 --> 00:29:13.279
Yeah.
00:29:13.440 --> 00:29:16.799
Who brings out the most joyful version of me?
00:29:16.960 --> 00:29:21.200
That's regarding the relationships that that foster joy.
00:29:21.519 --> 00:29:21.920
Yeah.
00:29:22.160 --> 00:29:27.119
Um am I resisting right now in this season, right?
00:29:27.359 --> 00:29:33.279
Or am I experiencing it and present in it?
00:29:33.599 --> 00:29:33.920
Yeah.
00:29:34.160 --> 00:29:38.559
What's one small thing that I can do today or this week?
00:29:38.799 --> 00:29:41.920
Um, simply to create some joy.
00:29:42.240 --> 00:29:43.119
Absolutely.
00:29:43.359 --> 00:29:53.359
And I think um one of the things worth mentioning is that of course, joy is a bit of an esoterical concept.
00:29:53.680 --> 00:30:02.000
And in in functional medicine, we always like to look at the science and the hard facts and your labs to see what's happening in your body.
00:30:02.319 --> 00:30:04.480
But that's only part of the story.
00:30:04.559 --> 00:30:25.440
You know, we can um address all these um different physiological things, um, things happening in your body, but if we're not addressing uh the mindset, um, the spiritual health, your your mental health, your joy at the same time, the healing can't be complete.
00:30:25.759 --> 00:30:31.440
And this is really uh a key concept that we need for healing.
00:30:31.839 --> 00:30:32.319
100%.
00:30:33.119 --> 00:30:36.400
And it it's not going to be perfect.
00:30:36.640 --> 00:30:53.279
I think that's an important thing to remember is it's not creating this life where nothing hurts because we are in phases where family members are passing away and where you know there's hard things that we are navigating.
00:30:53.599 --> 00:31:04.000
But maybe it's creating this life where you're noticing in the moment the beauty, you're really intentional in fostering that, even when there's pain.
00:31:05.119 --> 00:31:05.279
Okay.
00:31:05.920 --> 00:31:08.000
So create a little joy today.
00:31:08.240 --> 00:31:11.359
