In Season 2, Episode 7 of the Scripture Matters Podcast — “Prayer Matters,” Jonathan Sanford and Cliff Thompson step into the difficult space between “Amen” and the answer.
What does Scripture teach us about prayer when we cannot see God working? Why do some prayers appear to remain unanswered? Does persistence mean we lack faith—or can continuing to pray actually be an expression of faith? And what happens when God’s answer is different from the one we requested?
We’ll look at Jesus in Gethsemane, Paul’s thorn in the flesh, persistent prayer, God’s will, the peace that guards us when circumstances remain unchanged, and the difficult reality that sometimes prayer changes us before anything changes around us.
But the conversation ultimately reaches an even deeper question:
If the only time I talk to God is when I need Him to change something, am I treating prayer more like an emergency number than a relationship?
Prayer is more than presenting requests. It is surrender. Dependence. Trust. Thanksgiving. Confession. Communion. It continually brings us back into the conscious presence of the God who hears us, knows us, and cares for us—even in the silence after “Amen.”
If you have ever prayed for something for weeks, months, or even years and wondered whether God was listening, this conversation is for you.

00:00:10.160 --> 00:00:10.800
Amen.
00:00:11.839 --> 00:00:13.599
And then nothing.
00:00:14.160 --> 00:00:16.399
The room is still quiet.
00:00:16.879 --> 00:00:19.519
The diagnosis hasn't changed.
00:00:19.839 --> 00:00:22.800
The child still hasn't come home.
00:00:23.120 --> 00:00:25.519
The marriage still struggling.
00:00:25.839 --> 00:00:28.960
The job still hasn't appeared.
00:00:29.280 --> 00:00:32.000
The person you love still sick.
00:00:32.320 --> 00:00:40.719
And the problem that you've placed before God is still sitting exactly where it was before you prayed.
00:00:41.039 --> 00:00:42.960
So you pray again.
00:00:43.520 --> 00:00:44.159
Amen.
00:00:44.880 --> 00:00:46.560
Another day passes.
00:00:46.960 --> 00:00:48.159
Another week.
00:00:48.479 --> 00:00:49.759
Another month.
00:00:50.079 --> 00:01:00.159
And eventually a question begins forming that faithful Christians sometimes feel guilty for even thinking.
00:01:00.479 --> 00:01:02.880
Is anybody listening?
00:01:03.119 --> 00:01:08.079
Now maybe you'd never say that out loud, but you've wondered.
00:01:28.319 --> 00:01:33.280
Now those aren't questions asked only by unbelievers.
00:01:34.079 --> 00:01:43.280
Some of them have very well been whispered through tears by people who deeply love God.
00:01:43.760 --> 00:01:48.159
Because prayer can be one of the most beautiful parts of faith.
00:01:48.480 --> 00:01:52.560
And sometimes one of the most confusing.
00:02:02.239 --> 00:02:03.200
Or no.
00:02:04.319 --> 00:02:08.479
Or something we still don't quite understand.
00:02:09.120 --> 00:02:15.680
What happens to faith in that time of silence between amen and the answer?
00:02:16.080 --> 00:02:28.719
Maybe we've spent so much time asking whether prayer changes our circumstance that we have overlooked an even deeper question.
00:02:29.360 --> 00:02:35.039
What if prayer is doing something even when we cannot see anything happening?
00:02:35.360 --> 00:02:41.599
What if the silence after amen isn't empty at all?
00:02:42.319 --> 00:02:53.759
And what if prayer was never intended to merely be a way of getting things from God, but one of the way God draws his children nearer to himself?
00:02:54.319 --> 00:03:09.919
Because sooner or later every Christian has to decide whether prayer matters, even when the answer isn't the one we wanted when we wanted it.
00:03:10.159 --> 00:03:13.199
And that's the conversation we're having today.
00:03:13.439 --> 00:03:16.960
Because, good folks, prayer matters.
00:03:17.439 --> 00:03:21.520

00:03:58.560 --> 00:04:05.520
And now, good folks, let's get back to another episode of the Scripture Matters Podcast.
00:04:10.639 --> 00:04:12.400
Well, good afternoon, good folks.
00:04:12.479 --> 00:04:16.480
It's time again for the Scripture Matters Podcast.
00:04:16.720 --> 00:04:25.920
And if today is the first time you've seen these two faces on your screen, let me take the opportunity to introduce ourselves.
00:04:26.079 --> 00:04:28.160
First of all, I'm Jonathan Sanford.
00:04:28.319 --> 00:04:34.720
I serve as the pulpit minister for the good brethren of the Waters Road Church of Christ in Pasadena, Texas.
00:04:34.959 --> 00:04:36.319
And I'm Cliff Thompson.
00:04:36.399 --> 00:04:42.240
I serve as one of the elders here at the Waters Road Church of Christ, and I teach in our adult Bible class.
00:04:42.319 --> 00:04:54.000
And folks, whether you have been with us since the beginning or if this is your first episode, we are so very glad and thankful you have decided to join our conversation today.
00:04:54.399 --> 00:05:02.399
And conversation, folks, that is really what we desired for this program to truly be about.
00:05:02.879 --> 00:05:05.360
This is not a Bible class.
00:05:05.600 --> 00:05:08.399
We're not here to preach another sermon.
00:05:08.639 --> 00:05:11.199
No, instead, this is a conversation.
00:05:11.439 --> 00:05:21.120
So if something we discuss here together raises a question, challenges you, or leave you wanting to hear more, folks, we'd love to hear from you.
00:05:21.360 --> 00:05:32.000
Yes, Cliff, and you continue, folks, to be the key in helping us to get these conversations in front of many more people.
00:05:32.160 --> 00:05:34.079
So please take the time.
00:05:34.240 --> 00:05:37.360
Please remember to like, share, and subscribe.
00:05:37.600 --> 00:05:48.639
And folks, that may seem like a small thing, but every time you share an episode, you help carry a Bible conversation beyond the audience that would normally find us.
00:05:49.040 --> 00:05:49.680
All right.
00:05:50.000 --> 00:05:56.319
Last week our conversation was entitled The Church Matters.
00:05:56.639 --> 00:06:11.120
And Cliff, I gotta tell you, I really enjoyed where that episode took us because we intentionally decided to try to move beyond simply defining the church.
00:06:11.360 --> 00:06:12.399
Yes, sir, we did.
00:06:12.560 --> 00:06:28.639
We talked about why the church matters to Christ, why the failures of imperfect people should not cause us to dismiss what belongs to him, and why Christ must remain the head and rightful authority over his church.
00:06:28.959 --> 00:06:40.000
And with that being said, a sincere thank you to everyone who watched, listened, uh, commented, and shared last week's episode.
00:06:40.240 --> 00:06:45.759
Over 7,000 of you tuned in to our episode, The Church Matters.
00:06:45.920 --> 00:06:52.800
And please, please know this we never take your support of the Scripture Matters podcasts for granted.
00:06:52.959 --> 00:06:54.079
Not even one moment.
00:06:54.319 --> 00:07:04.879
No, today now we move from something we as Christians experience together, the church, to something that can become intensely personal.
00:07:05.120 --> 00:07:05.680
That's right.
00:07:05.839 --> 00:07:07.839
We're talking about prayer.
00:07:08.319 --> 00:07:21.519
And really and truly, judging from the questions that people ask about it, this is one of those conversations, Cliff, that can become very real very fast.
00:07:21.839 --> 00:07:25.920
Yes, sir, because most Christians know what it is to pray.
00:07:26.240 --> 00:07:39.839
But eventually, life brings us to moments when simply knowing how to pray does not make what happens after that, amen, seem any easier.
00:07:40.160 --> 00:07:44.079
And that is where Jonathan and I want us to begin today.
00:07:44.319 --> 00:07:50.879
Not with a definition of prayer and not with a list of things that we already know.
00:07:51.120 --> 00:08:11.439
No, folks, we want to take a moment today to observe together what happens in that moment when we have prayed, kept praying, said our final amen, and looked around, yet nothing that we can see appears to be changing.
00:08:11.680 --> 00:08:20.000
You know, Jonathan, I've heard people say this, and I have to be honest with you, I've thought it myself at times.
00:08:20.240 --> 00:08:30.079
But when a Christian is praying about something over and over and over again, and then they look around and don't see anything changing.
00:08:30.319 --> 00:08:35.679
They say, God, are you doing anything about what I'm praying for?
00:08:35.919 --> 00:08:42.159
Yeah, Cliff, I think most people out there know very well the tension that you speak of.
00:08:42.399 --> 00:08:55.039
We pray for healing, we pray for our families, for someone maybe who has walked away from God, or for a difficult situation to change.
00:08:55.279 --> 00:08:59.759
And sometimes, brother, nothing looks different.
00:09:00.080 --> 00:09:04.799
And Jonathan, let's be brutally honest with each other here, my friend.
00:09:05.120 --> 00:09:12.720
That is one area in our Christian walk where we can become very discouraged really quick.
00:09:13.120 --> 00:09:18.399
If I'm praying faithfully, but I don't see anything happening.
00:09:18.720 --> 00:09:24.639
It is just normal for me to think, is my prayer actually accomplishing anything?
00:09:24.960 --> 00:09:32.240
That question truly matters, Cliff, because prayer is not a transaction.
00:09:32.879 --> 00:09:43.200
We bring our requests before God, trust his wisdom, and submit our desires ultimately to his will.
00:09:43.840 --> 00:09:54.240
Jonathan, when we think along the lines you just mentioned of submitting our desires to his will, Jesus gives us a perfect example of that in the garden.
00:09:54.799 --> 00:10:00.879
He prayed, not my will, but yours be done in Luke 22, 42.
00:10:01.200 --> 00:10:01.600
Exactly.
00:10:01.679 --> 00:10:03.759
And you think about that for just a moment.
00:10:04.080 --> 00:10:13.759
Jesus honestly asked for the cup to pass, yet surrendered ultimately to the Father's will.
00:10:14.320 --> 00:10:22.720
Prayer lets us ask boldly while entrusting the outcome to God.
00:10:24.000 --> 00:10:38.000
So, Jonathan, when we pray and we don't see the circumstances changing concerning what we prayed for, perhaps the first thing we need to examine is what we think prayer is supposed to accomplish.
00:10:38.320 --> 00:10:40.159
Yeah, I've got to agree with that statement.
00:10:40.399 --> 00:10:46.799
We can mistake visible change for proof that, hey, God heard us.
00:10:47.279 --> 00:10:50.320
But the truth, I think, is a little different.
00:10:50.480 --> 00:10:57.360
Scripture never promises an immediate change in our circumstances.
00:10:58.159 --> 00:11:05.120
Jonathan, then Philippians chapter 4, verses 6 through 7 really does speak to that, doesn't it?
00:11:06.559 --> 00:11:11.759
In that passage, Paul tells us to bring our request to God with thanksgiving.
00:11:11.919 --> 00:11:19.840
And then he talks about the peace of God, will guard our hearts and minds in Jesus Christ.
00:11:20.080 --> 00:11:20.559
Exactly.
00:11:20.720 --> 00:11:25.440
And Paul does not promise change circumstances.
00:11:25.519 --> 00:11:27.440
He knew that very well personally.
00:11:27.679 --> 00:11:32.960
He says God's peace can guard us within them.
00:11:33.440 --> 00:11:35.200
That's powerful, Jonathan.
00:11:35.519 --> 00:11:46.240
Maybe sometimes we're asking God to change the situation while all alone, God is using our prayer and the situation to change us.
00:11:46.559 --> 00:11:50.320
And that can truly begin to reshape us.
00:11:50.559 --> 00:12:03.519
Prayer, think about it this way: it can cultivate within us things like patience, humility, dependence, gratitude, and don't forget trust.
00:12:03.919 --> 00:12:08.639
Often long before we ever notice the change.
00:12:09.200 --> 00:12:13.039
Jonathan, another scripture is James 5, 16.
00:12:13.200 --> 00:12:17.919
It says the prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
00:12:18.080 --> 00:12:21.200
And I just love that phrase, as it is working.
00:12:21.440 --> 00:12:22.720
Yeah, me too, Cliff.
00:12:22.879 --> 00:12:30.639
Prayer is not powerless simply because its effects may be invisible.
00:12:31.600 --> 00:12:33.759
But let me ask you something, Jonathan.
00:12:33.919 --> 00:12:38.960
Does that mean we should simply pray once and then forget about it?
00:12:39.120 --> 00:12:40.720
No, you think about Jesus.
00:12:40.879 --> 00:12:53.759
He taught persistence in Luke chapter 18, telling his disciples that they ought always to pray and not lose heart.
00:12:54.159 --> 00:12:58.639
So continuing to pray isn't evidence that we don't trust God.
00:12:58.879 --> 00:13:03.279
It is actually can be evidence that we do trust him, then.
00:13:03.519 --> 00:13:04.879
No, that's exactly right.
00:13:05.120 --> 00:13:09.360
Persistence, it's truly faith in action.
00:13:09.600 --> 00:13:16.000
We keep praying because we trust in that moment that God is truly hearing us.
00:13:16.399 --> 00:13:22.879
Jonathan, first John 5, 14, then gives us another important piece of information concerning this subject.
00:13:23.120 --> 00:13:27.759
If we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.
00:13:27.919 --> 00:13:30.960
That's really the foundation, isn't it?
00:13:31.200 --> 00:13:31.679
It is.
00:13:31.840 --> 00:13:45.440
Our confidence is not that every request will be granted, no, but that God hears us as we pray according to his will.
00:13:46.159 --> 00:13:51.120
Sometimes the will of God is to answer our prayer with a yes.
00:13:51.440 --> 00:13:55.120
And sometimes God's answer might be no.
00:13:55.679 --> 00:13:58.399
Those are what I call immediate answers.
00:13:58.559 --> 00:14:01.360
However, Jonathan, that's not all.
00:14:01.519 --> 00:14:07.360
Sometimes, and to me, the hardest one of all is that we may have to wait.
00:14:07.679 --> 00:14:12.639
The difficult part is that scripture doesn't give us a timetable, does he?
00:14:12.879 --> 00:14:13.200
No.
00:14:13.600 --> 00:14:18.960
That's where real faith truly becomes lived trust.
00:14:19.279 --> 00:14:32.080
Think about it this way Hebrews chapter 11, verse number one calls faith the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
00:14:32.559 --> 00:14:39.600
So faith means continuing to trust God even when the answer isn't visible yet.
00:14:39.840 --> 00:14:40.480
Exactly.
00:14:40.720 --> 00:14:46.639
Faith trusts God long before the answer is ever visible.
00:14:46.960 --> 00:14:49.039
That reminds me of something, Jonathan.
00:14:49.200 --> 00:14:54.879
How often do we only recognize God's providence after we've looked backwards?
00:14:55.039 --> 00:15:01.200
We pray and pray, and the answer we receive makes no sense at the time we receive it.
00:15:01.360 --> 00:15:06.080
But eventually, in hindsight, that answer becomes crystal clear.
00:15:06.320 --> 00:15:07.600
Oh, yeah, Cliff.
00:15:07.759 --> 00:15:18.000
We should, I think, though, be careful about judging God's providence by today's limited perspectives.
00:15:18.159 --> 00:15:23.840
You see, we do not always see what our God sees.
00:15:24.720 --> 00:15:27.360
So let me ask you this, Jonathan.
00:15:27.679 --> 00:15:34.399
What should a Christian do when they prayed for a long time and nothing seems to be changing?
00:15:35.039 --> 00:15:36.480
Here's your answer.
00:15:36.879 --> 00:15:42.080
Keep praying, keep obeying, keep trusting.
00:15:42.240 --> 00:15:52.080
You see, a delayed or unexpected answer is not evidence that God has ever stopped listening.
00:15:52.879 --> 00:15:55.759
So that keeps me thinking, Jonathan.
00:15:56.000 --> 00:15:58.399
Perhaps we should ask a different question.
00:15:58.639 --> 00:16:02.799
Instead of only asking, when will God change this situation?
00:16:03.919 --> 00:16:08.720
Maybe we should be asking, Lord, what are you teaching me while I wait?
00:16:08.960 --> 00:16:15.120
No, I think you're on to something there because there is a much deeper question.
00:16:15.440 --> 00:16:16.159
Think about it.
00:16:16.399 --> 00:16:26.720
Waiting can become a place where God forms patience, dependence, and trust within our hearts.
00:16:26.960 --> 00:16:42.000
I know that is something we all need to remember, Jonathan, but that's also something hard to do, especially while some might be waiting on an answer of what to them is an extremely important prayer.
00:16:42.240 --> 00:16:52.879
Another thing that's hard to remember, Jonathan, is in the absence of a visible change, that does not mean the absence of God's presence is there.
00:16:53.120 --> 00:16:54.480
No, that's exactly right.
00:16:54.639 --> 00:17:01.600
A lack of visible change does not prove in any way that our God is absent.
00:17:02.320 --> 00:17:08.559
Again, you have to remember, good folks, that our view is simply limited.
00:17:08.960 --> 00:17:24.400
So, folks, if you're listening today and you've been praying about something for a long time, and then the best advice that Jonathan and I can give you is don't give up simply because you don't see an answer.
00:17:24.640 --> 00:17:28.240
Now, here's the reality: keep praying and keep trusting.
00:17:28.319 --> 00:17:31.920
I'm going to sound like a broken record, folks, but it's so true.
00:17:32.160 --> 00:17:44.720
Even when your circumstances are not changing, prayer can still strengthen your faith and deepen your dependence upon God.
00:17:45.279 --> 00:17:48.640
And maybe that's the real lesson here, Jonathan.
00:17:48.799 --> 00:17:55.680
You know, prayer isn't just about asking God to change what's around us or maybe even our circumstances.
00:17:55.839 --> 00:18:01.039
It's about allowing our relationship with God to change what's within us.
00:18:01.279 --> 00:18:02.240
No, here's the deal.
00:18:02.400 --> 00:18:10.000
We may not see in that moment what our prayers are accomplishing, Cliff, but we know.
00:18:10.799 --> 00:18:14.480
We know the one to whom we are praying.
00:18:14.720 --> 00:18:20.799
And Jonathan, through God's holy word, we have confidence that God hears our prayer.
00:18:20.960 --> 00:18:25.200
God knows what we need, and God does really care for us.
00:18:25.519 --> 00:18:38.960
So, good folks, when you decide tonight to finish your evening in prayer, please do not measure prayer only by what changes tomorrow.
00:18:40.000 --> 00:18:52.319
Pray with the faith to be able to say to God, God, I do not understand, but I trust your wisdom, I trust your timing, and God, I trust your will.
00:18:52.720 --> 00:18:58.960
Yeah, because sometimes the answer we are waiting for isn't visible yet.
00:18:59.200 --> 00:18:59.920
No, exactly.
00:19:00.079 --> 00:19:01.599
Here's the thing, folks.
00:19:02.000 --> 00:19:14.559
We cannot see uh the things that we don't see that we cannot see, they will never truly be proof that in any way God has stopped hearing us.
00:19:14.960 --> 00:19:27.839
And maybe that's where less faith becomes greater faith, Jonathan, when we keep praying, keep trusting, and keep walking with God, even when we cannot see the answer.
00:19:28.079 --> 00:19:28.400
Amen.
00:19:28.640 --> 00:19:40.000
Again, we may not see the answer, but we can keep trusting the one who sees the very things that we cannot see.
00:19:40.880 --> 00:19:43.359
Jonathan, let me ask you a question.
00:19:43.680 --> 00:19:50.799
Have you ever prayed about something so long that you finally wonder, is God even listening?
00:19:50.960 --> 00:19:57.279
When it comes to prayer, I think that may be another one of those hard questions a Christian kind of wrestles with.
00:19:57.599 --> 00:20:06.319
Brother, not only do I agree that that's a difficult question, but I can also honestly speak from experience.
00:20:06.480 --> 00:20:10.240
I've been there, done that, got the t-shirt, Cliff.
00:20:10.400 --> 00:20:28.400
When we pray sincerely and repeatedly, apparent silence, it can be very difficult to understand and unfortunately can lead us many times to make conclusions that aren't exactly true.
00:20:28.880 --> 00:20:35.279
So, since I'm in the questioning mood today, Jonathan, let me ask you an uncomfortable question.
00:20:35.519 --> 00:20:38.799
Why do some prayer appear to remain unanswered?
00:20:39.119 --> 00:20:40.720
Uh well, Cliff, wait a second.
00:20:40.799 --> 00:20:46.960
I thought in the in this deal we talked about it a long time ago, I was gonna be the one to ask the hard questions.
00:20:47.599 --> 00:20:51.839
But here's the first thing I got to tell everybody out here today.
00:20:52.079 --> 00:20:54.400
What feels unanswered?
00:20:54.720 --> 00:21:06.079
What feels unanswered to us as the individuals who pray by faith, again, folks, it is not proof that God did not hear us.
00:21:06.319 --> 00:21:13.599
Scripture never promises us that our every request will be granted.
00:21:14.240 --> 00:21:14.880
Yes, sir.
00:21:14.960 --> 00:21:24.480
I cannot help but think about 1 John 5, 14 when it says, if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.
00:21:24.720 --> 00:21:31.920
That little phrase, according to his will, seems to be extremely important in that verse, Jonathan.
00:21:32.160 --> 00:21:33.680
No, here's the thing, Cliff.
00:21:33.920 --> 00:21:38.960
Prayer is not us persuading God to adopt our will.
00:21:39.279 --> 00:21:43.119
I know that's what we might want, but it's just not the case.
00:21:43.359 --> 00:21:51.599
What it is, it's bringing our request to him while trusting his greater wisdom.
00:21:52.160 --> 00:21:55.039
I guess this must be the day for questioning, Jonathan.
00:21:55.119 --> 00:22:02.079
I'm sorry, but I'm asking for something that seems Completely reasonable.
00:22:02.240 --> 00:22:05.599
I'm praying for, let's say, a struggling marriage.
00:22:05.759 --> 00:22:08.720
Maybe I'm praying for a wayward child.
00:22:08.880 --> 00:22:16.319
Uh, maybe there's a serious problem at work I'm praying for, or someone who desperately needs to come back to God.
00:22:17.039 --> 00:22:17.759
Absolutely.
00:22:17.839 --> 00:22:22.400
I mean, we we should pray for matters such as what you speak of.
00:22:22.880 --> 00:22:24.960
We should pray for all of those things.
00:22:25.279 --> 00:22:31.680
But even good motives, Cliff, do not give us God's perspective.
00:22:32.000 --> 00:22:37.519
Isaiah 55, verses 8 and 9 reminds us of this.
00:22:37.839 --> 00:22:46.000
Tells us, for my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are my ways your ways.
00:22:46.480 --> 00:22:49.920
Oh, Jonathan, it is so hard to remember that.
00:22:50.240 --> 00:23:01.279
But thinking about that verse now, I have to be reminded that I'm only seeing things from a carnal mind, which truly has its limitations.
00:23:01.680 --> 00:23:02.160
Exactly.
00:23:02.319 --> 00:23:08.000
Again, let us remind you our view, our perspective is limited.
00:23:08.240 --> 00:23:20.799
What may feel like silence may involve God's timing, his providence, or an answer that may be very different from the answer we expected.
00:23:21.200 --> 00:23:27.440
So does that mean we should just stop praying when we don't see results, Jonathan?
00:23:27.599 --> 00:23:28.880
No, quite the opposite.
00:23:29.119 --> 00:23:40.000
Jesus taught his disciples that they ought to always pray and not lose heart in Luke chapter 18 and verse 1.
00:23:40.559 --> 00:23:46.960
Jonathan, I like that because Jesus connected persistent prayer with refusing to give up.
00:23:47.119 --> 00:23:50.799
Apparently, waiting doesn't mean prayer has failed.
00:23:51.039 --> 00:23:51.759
No, exactly.
00:23:51.920 --> 00:24:03.440
Waiting does not mean that our prayer has failed, but continued prayer can deepen our trust while our circumstances just may remain unchanged.
00:24:03.759 --> 00:24:08.000
Jonathan, Paul experienced something just like that, didn't he?
00:24:08.240 --> 00:24:13.599
I mean, didn't he plead with the Lord three times about his thorn in the flesh?
00:24:13.839 --> 00:24:14.720
Yes, sir, he did.
00:24:14.799 --> 00:24:20.400
And God's answer was not to remove that thorn, was it, brother?
00:24:21.200 --> 00:24:22.000
No, sir.
00:24:22.240 --> 00:24:34.720
Instead, the Lord said in 2 Corinthians chapter 12 and verse 9, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.
00:24:34.960 --> 00:24:43.119
Jonathan, that's perfect example again, because Paul prayed for a specific change, but God provided something different.
00:24:43.440 --> 00:24:44.480
Sufficient grace.
00:24:44.720 --> 00:24:45.920
Yeah, exactly right.
00:24:46.079 --> 00:24:53.599
Paul received that sustaining grace instead of the removal of the thorn of the flesh.
00:24:54.000 --> 00:25:04.480
And that tells us that sometimes God does not take away our thorn, whatever it may be, instead, he gives us the strength in that moment to endure it.
00:25:04.720 --> 00:25:12.640
But Jonathan, along with all of that, there's another possibility that I you and I have to discuss now.
00:25:12.960 --> 00:25:20.880
Could some prayer appear unanswered because maybe something is wrong with the life of the person praying?
00:25:21.279 --> 00:25:28.319
Well, I think that's a necessary possibility that we should examine carefully here, okay?
00:25:28.640 --> 00:25:38.880
Psalm 66 and verse 18 tells us, if I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.
00:25:39.200 --> 00:25:53.279
Now that does not mean every delayed answer reveals some hidden sin, but cherished rebellion, folks, it absolutely does affect our relationship with God.
00:25:53.839 --> 00:25:57.759
So prayer isn't a substitution for obedience.
00:25:58.079 --> 00:26:08.079
We cannot think that we can deliberately live contrary to God's will and then expect prayer to operate like a spiritual vending machine, so to speak.
00:26:08.319 --> 00:26:09.359
No, you're exactly right.
00:26:09.440 --> 00:26:14.960
Again, prayer is not a substitute for repentance or obedience.
00:26:15.119 --> 00:26:17.359
You think about James 5, 16.
00:26:17.440 --> 00:26:19.519
It speaks specifically.
00:26:20.000 --> 00:26:25.440
The prayer of a righteous person has great power.
00:26:25.759 --> 00:26:31.680
Then perhaps we shouldn't ask only, why hasn't God answered my prayer?
00:26:31.920 --> 00:26:36.640
Maybe we should also ask, what is God teaching me while I wait?
00:26:36.880 --> 00:26:40.880
No, I think in that moment, that's the wiser question here.
00:26:41.359 --> 00:26:51.279
Waiting can cultivate, again, patience, humility, perseverance, and deeper trust in God's wisdom.
00:26:51.519 --> 00:27:02.400
So if someone's listening today that had been praying for months or maybe even years and sees no change, what would you say to them, Jonathan?
00:27:02.640 --> 00:27:12.400
Again, let us remind everybody out there today that um we should not mistake apparent silence for God's absence.
00:27:12.559 --> 00:27:20.079
Again, keep praying, keep obeying, and keep trusting that God sees what you cannot.
00:27:20.400 --> 00:27:30.240
And remember, God may answer with yes, may answer with no, or something completely different from what we expected.
00:27:30.480 --> 00:27:35.119
Our faith cannot depend upon receiving the answer we wanted.
00:27:35.440 --> 00:27:36.640
No, that's exactly right.
00:27:36.799 --> 00:27:49.599
Our faith rests in God's character, his wisdom, his righteousness, love, and his faithfulness, not in receiving the outcome that we wanted.
00:27:49.920 --> 00:27:56.000
So maybe the greatest question isn't why hasn't God answered the way I wanted?
00:27:56.319 --> 00:27:58.160
No, maybe it's this.
00:27:58.720 --> 00:28:05.039
Will I trust God when his answer is not the one I expected?
00:28:05.920 --> 00:28:10.880
Because faith doesn't require us to see everything God is doing.
00:28:11.119 --> 00:28:11.920
No, that's true.
00:28:12.079 --> 00:28:17.039
Faith trusts in the one who sees what you and I cannot.
00:28:17.279 --> 00:28:22.960
And that gives us something to hold on to, Jonathan, when the prayer responses kind of seem silent.
00:28:23.279 --> 00:28:30.880
Yeah, and God remains faithful even when the answer that He has given us is not yet visible.
00:28:31.200 --> 00:28:35.839
So keep praying, keep trusting, keep obeying.
00:28:36.079 --> 00:28:42.160
And folks, leave the answer with the one who sees what you cannot.
00:28:42.480 --> 00:28:48.559
Jonathan, that really brings us to the final question we promised to consider today.
00:28:48.960 --> 00:28:58.240
If prayer is doing more than simply delivering our request to God, then how should prayer actually shape our relationship with Him?
00:28:58.559 --> 00:29:03.119
Oh, Cliff, here's the part of today's episode that I really look forward to.
00:29:03.279 --> 00:29:06.400
We talked about these three questions last week.
00:29:06.559 --> 00:29:15.599
This one really stood out to me because ultimately this should change the way we approach God all together.
00:29:15.839 --> 00:29:29.599
If the only time I talk to God is when I need Him to change something, then I may be treating prayer more like an emergency phone number than a relationship.
00:29:29.920 --> 00:29:37.759
You know, Jonathan, that's worth thinking about because prayer was never intended to exist only in moments of crisis.
00:29:38.160 --> 00:29:39.359
Exactly right, Cliff.
00:29:39.519 --> 00:29:46.400
1 Thessalonians chapter 5 and verse 17 simply says, pray without ceasing.
00:29:46.640 --> 00:29:54.000
Now that does not mean that we spend every waking second of our life involved in speaking of prayer.
00:29:54.240 --> 00:30:07.039
No, it describes a life, a life that remains continually dependent upon God, a life where prayer is woven into our relationship with him.
00:30:07.680 --> 00:30:14.160
So we pray when something is wrong, but we also pray when everything seems to be going well.
00:30:14.480 --> 00:30:15.359
Amen to that.
00:30:15.599 --> 00:30:21.039
We thank him even when we're not asking him for anything.
00:30:21.359 --> 00:30:24.240
We praise him because of who he is.
00:30:24.640 --> 00:30:37.039
We confess when we have sinned, we seek his wisdom before the decision instead of only asking him to repair the damage after we make a mess of things.
00:30:37.440 --> 00:30:47.200
And we pray for other people because prayer continually moves our attention beyond ourselves.
00:30:47.599 --> 00:30:54.640
And the more regularly we come before God, the more conscious we become of our dependence upon Him.
00:30:54.880 --> 00:31:00.960
And I think that may be, Cliff, one of the greatest things that prayer will ever accomplish in our lives.
00:31:01.200 --> 00:31:12.880
Prayer certainly brings our needs before God, but it also continually brings us back into the conscious presence of God.
00:31:13.359 --> 00:31:20.319
And that makes the silence after Amen look a little different than it did when we begin today, Jonathan.
00:31:20.640 --> 00:31:21.119
Absolutely.
00:31:21.200 --> 00:31:22.319
It really, really does.
00:31:22.400 --> 00:31:28.640
Because now the question is not simply, did God give me what I asked for?
00:31:28.960 --> 00:31:35.759
No, the question becomes, Am I still walking with him while I wait?
00:31:36.400 --> 00:31:41.839
And if the answer is yes, then prayer is already doing something important.
00:31:42.160 --> 00:31:42.720
Yes, sir.
00:31:42.960 --> 00:32:01.839
So, good folks, when you pray, ask boldly, pray persistently, submit your desires to the very will of God, but do not allow prayer to become merely a list of your biggest requests.
00:32:02.079 --> 00:32:11.200
No, let it deepen the relationship we have with the Father who we know hears you, knows you, and ultimately cares for you.
00:32:11.519 --> 00:32:18.160
Oh, Jonathan, I think that's a beautiful way to just tie a bowl on today's conversation.
00:32:18.400 --> 00:32:24.559
So, with that, Jonathan, I and I want to say thank you for spending this time with us today.
00:32:24.799 --> 00:32:31.039

00:33:42.160 --> 00:33:42.960
That's right, brother.
00:33:43.039 --> 00:33:57.359
We'll ask what worship really is and who determines how God should be worshipped and whether worship can ever become more about us than the one we claim to honor.
00:33:57.680 --> 00:34:02.480
Because next week's conversation is called Worship Matters.
00:34:02.720 --> 00:34:04.720
