In this episode of The Lash Standard, I break down a moment with my 12-year-old daughter during a catching lesson that completely reinforced how I think about fatherhood, parenting, confidence, resilience, discipline, and raising capable kids.
She was exhausted, soaked in sweat, and her coach gave her a choice: stop early after working hard, or finish the last 10 minutes.
She looked at me for the answer.
I didn’t give it to her.
That decision became the lesson.
Because there’s a difference between teaching your kid to obey you and giving them enough space to make a hard decision for themselves. Confidence isn’t built by constantly telling kids they’re capable. It’s built when they accumulate evidence that they can handle adversity, make decisions, struggle, fail, recover, and keep going when quitting would be easier.
We talk about why parents can accidentally steal important “reps” from their children by solving every problem, removing every obstacle, and protecting them from discomfort. Sometimes helping your kid actually means resisting the instinct to step in.
I also break down why mental toughness isn’t about never quitting, how children subconsciously build patterns through repetition, and why your behavior as a father or mother teaches far more than your advice ever will.
If you’re a parent raising kids in youth sports—or simply trying to raise confident, disciplined, resilient children who can think for themselves—this episode will make you look differently at the moments that seem small while they’re happening
Your job isn’t to remove every hard thing from your kid’s life.
It’s to help build the person who will know what to do when life gets hard and you’re no longer standing beside them.
