Deep Dive into The Legacy of John Calvin: His Influence on the Modern World by David W. Hall - Tributes: Measuring a Man after Many Generations
David W. Hall's compilation demonstrates that John Calvin’s legacy extends far beyond the Presbyterian tradition, eliciting high esteem from Baptists, Anglicans, Independents, and Methodists. Among Baptists, the renowned preacher Charles Spurgeon held Calvin in such high regard that he preached in Calvin’s Geneva pulpit and viewed Calvinism not as a nickname for a sect, but as "the old Gospel" itself. Other Baptist leaders, including John Broadus and James P. Boyce, argued that Calvin’s systematic theology compelled deep thinking and closely approximated biblical truth regarding election. Contemporary pastor John Piper further highlights Calvin’s central passion as a zeal to illustrate the glory of God, a focus that drove his life of continuous expository preaching.
From the Anglican tradition, J.I. Packer asserts that one cannot understand modern Western history without Calvin, describing him as a "prophet for today" whose vision of God’s majesty is the formative principle of his theology. Bishop J.C. Ryle similarly contended that the Church of England’s Thirty-nine Articles are fundamentally Calvinistic and scriptural.
Independent minister John MacArthur praises Calvin primarily as a biblical expositor who possessed a profound sense of God, noting that this depth created the height of his influence. Even Methodists offer tribute; Martyn Lloyd-Jones credited Calvin with saving Protestantism by providing it with a systematic theological body in the Institutes, which he called the "iron ration of the soul". While John Wesley disagreed with Calvin on predestination, he consistently acknowledged him as a wise, pious, and learned man. Even Roman Catholic scholar Alexandre Ganoczy recognized Calvin's superior ability to orchestrate theological themes. Ultimately, these diverse voices confirm that Calvin’s influence transcends specific denominations, shaping concepts of liberty and faith across centuries.
