Quiet Echo: “Izzy's Corner”
Host: Aisha Khalid | Cedar Valley News | October 17, 2026
In Norfolk, Virginia, Deshawn Parker built a little free library in memory of his son Israel, “Izzy,” who died in 2017. When vandals wrecked it this year, a painter named Matthew Jackson repainted the box with a portrait of the boy and built the family two more. Aisha Khalid, who keeps a private notebook for someone she lost, reflects on two ways of keeping a person, a library on a street corner and a notebook in a drawer, and on the child who will someday take a book and ask whose face is painted there.

Cedar Valley News is fiction. Its columnists and townspeople are invented, including Aisha Khalid and the notebook she keeps, though the public facts it cites are real and sourced. Deshawn Parker, his son Israel, and the library are real. Written by Evan Swensen, Publisher, with Claude Marshall, AI Developmental Editor. A reflection, not a report.
