00:00:12.400 --> 00:00:17.519
Trading commodity futures and options involved to total with the block and is not suitable for all investors.
00:00:21.440 --> 00:00:23.359
Today is July 23rd.
00:00:23.440 --> 00:00:26.960
I've got Mike Fitzgerald joining us from the Mechanicsville office.
00:00:27.120 --> 00:00:28.239
How's it going today, Mike?
00:00:28.640 --> 00:00:29.120
It's great.
00:00:29.199 --> 00:00:30.079
Thanks for having me.
00:00:30.320 --> 00:00:30.719
Awesome.
00:00:30.800 --> 00:00:32.399
Well, this is a Hog Talk podcast.
00:00:32.479 --> 00:00:37.679
Let's give a big shout out to the futures here who have actually tried to go up recently, Mike.
00:00:37.840 --> 00:00:40.960
We've uh had a nice little run, uh August futures.
00:00:41.039 --> 00:00:44.640
We've traded just up over to uh 102 here recently.
00:00:44.799 --> 00:00:48.320
Uh what can you tell us about a little bit of the futures action recently?
00:00:48.560 --> 00:00:52.479
Kind of what we've seen for this change in pattern here since the beginning of June.
00:00:53.359 --> 00:00:57.920
Yeah, they definitely have had a bullish tone to these hog futures.
00:00:58.079 --> 00:01:03.039
Obviously, I think we we beat these things up enough back in June.
00:01:03.200 --> 00:01:07.280
So the the recovery bounces a little bit expected.
00:01:07.920 --> 00:01:14.159
Um, but yeah, we have had a lot of good fundamental improvements here in the last couple weeks.
00:01:14.480 --> 00:01:29.920
We've seen things like the cash market has kind of continuously, week after week, made new highs, and the cutout finally made a new year-to-date high recently and continues to move up.
00:01:30.400 --> 00:01:34.879
And hog futures are pretty enthusiastic with some of this news.
00:01:35.599 --> 00:01:39.760
When you say they're pretty enthusiastic, is that more front-heavy, back heavy?
00:01:39.920 --> 00:01:44.159
What's your take on on what futures are accounting for at the best?
00:01:45.760 --> 00:01:46.400
Both.
00:01:48.079 --> 00:01:50.239
They both had a lot of enthusiasm in it.
00:01:50.319 --> 00:01:54.719
And I I get that that's kind of a scapegoat for a answer here.
00:01:54.959 --> 00:01:58.480
Like in the example I would give you would be August hogs first.
00:01:59.120 --> 00:02:03.599
August hogs are traded as high as 102 this week.
00:02:03.840 --> 00:02:10.960
Um, they are still well ahead of what of what fundamentals suggest it should be, right?
00:02:11.039 --> 00:02:17.520
Uh the industry is staring down negative basis levels, kind of like we have been all year long.
00:02:17.759 --> 00:02:29.120
So not only has cutout and cash market improved, but August hog futures kind of represent that the cutout and cash markets have to improve more over the course of the next few weeks.
00:02:29.199 --> 00:02:32.080
And there's about three weeks left of the August contract.
00:02:32.719 --> 00:02:44.960
Now, with the deferred contracts, when I say they've been pretty enthusiastic, if I if I just grabbed normal seasonal tendencies, and we we spent some time staring at these this morning a little bit.
00:02:45.280 --> 00:02:53.840
Um hog futures would usually have a pretty deep discount in them for months like October or December.
00:02:54.240 --> 00:02:56.240
Um, and they do have a discount.
00:02:56.319 --> 00:03:00.000
Like the example I could give you today would be October Hog Futures at 88.
00:03:00.159 --> 00:03:03.680
That that that is$13 lower than what August is.
00:03:04.400 --> 00:03:14.719
Um I think the last three or five years, it would it would be closer to$15 or$16 lower than what August Hog Futures is.
00:03:15.039 --> 00:03:18.000
So it's it's got a little narrower spread than normal.
00:03:18.080 --> 00:03:21.520
There's plenty of enthusiasm, I think, in those deferred contracts.
00:03:21.919 --> 00:03:30.639
Obviously, a lot of producers in my neck of the woods would would be talking up things like a flatter cutout this year, right?
00:03:30.800 --> 00:03:43.759
If the cutout has been relatively flat for months, and if the cutouts doesn't have a huge run up in it in August, hog futures probably don't have to price in a huge drop as we head into October.
00:03:43.840 --> 00:03:46.000
Hence spreads would be a little narrower.
00:03:47.039 --> 00:03:51.439
What can you tell me about the supply situation you think going into the summer here?
00:03:51.680 --> 00:03:52.960
Just what you've seen lately.
00:03:53.039 --> 00:03:58.080
Uh, maybe just start on total numbers and then we can work on uh some weights, things like that.
00:03:58.159 --> 00:04:00.240
What are you seeing from the supply side, Mike?
00:04:00.560 --> 00:04:00.879
Yep.
00:04:01.039 --> 00:04:05.840
Last week, um, and and has been the case for the last couple weeks.
00:04:06.000 --> 00:04:09.599
We we anticipate what the harvest numbers are going to be.
00:04:09.840 --> 00:04:14.719
Um, the USDA continues to revise these numbers lower in hindsight.
00:04:14.800 --> 00:04:27.120
So last week we harvested about one percent less pigs, um, which is a nice change of pace because we I think we spent the last two months prior to this harvesting one percent more pigs.
00:04:27.279 --> 00:04:29.839
So finally got into a few tighter numbers.
00:04:30.000 --> 00:04:37.519
Like the chatter in the industry today would be boy, are we in a hole, or is this kind of a weight-impacted thing?
00:04:37.600 --> 00:04:40.879
And and heat temperature slowed pigs down.
00:04:40.959 --> 00:04:52.720
And I guess for right now, I would lean a little bit more in the latter, which would say the heat that the Midwest has faced over the last few weeks has has slowed down marketing some.
00:04:52.800 --> 00:05:00.720
And it's not not necessarily that we're short of pigs, it's more like we're just calling up the packer and canceling a few loads because they didn't grow very well.
00:05:01.279 --> 00:05:03.680
Hop over to the weight side there, Kate.
00:05:03.759 --> 00:05:05.680
Uh, let's have Mike talk about you.
00:05:05.839 --> 00:05:11.839
You mentioned the heat and the impact that's been having um on this uh uh on the marketings here.
00:05:12.160 --> 00:05:16.240
What would be your take on weights and how that's uh reacted with some of the heat?
00:05:16.480 --> 00:05:16.879
Yep.
00:05:17.199 --> 00:05:21.920
So you have the producer owned one pulled up there, and I I have some numbers in the top of my head.
00:05:22.000 --> 00:05:27.199
Maybe if you uh if you click on the combined, would be a little better reference point for me here.
00:05:27.519 --> 00:05:34.160
Um couple weeks ago, industry average carcass weights were sitting five pounds heavier than a year ago.
00:05:34.399 --> 00:05:46.480
I mean, it was it was a really big spread, and we had some of the heaviest carcass weights we've had in years, going back to even when when COVID was taking place, right?
00:05:46.560 --> 00:05:53.279
And our our packing plants were shutting down, and a lot of us were starting to wonder where in the world we're gonna market these pigs or what we're gonna do with them.
00:05:53.519 --> 00:05:59.040
We had them getting fed rationing diets and things like that, trying to slow them down.
00:05:59.199 --> 00:06:03.199
So we're rivaling carcass weights of that magnitude today.
00:06:03.439 --> 00:06:11.920
Um, and they fell off a lot, so we were five pounds heavier, and as of this week, I think we're closer to three pounds heavier year over year.
00:06:12.000 --> 00:06:15.519
So we're narrowing that gap in quite a bit with this heat.
00:06:16.959 --> 00:06:18.639
Nice overall production.
00:06:18.800 --> 00:06:22.079
You think uh anything else you've been seeing to have an impact there?
00:06:22.240 --> 00:06:23.759
Should we hop over to demand?
00:06:24.079 --> 00:06:29.040
Yeah, I mean, I'll just reference a little snippet here on the production side.
00:06:29.279 --> 00:06:41.600
Having carcass weights drop an extra two pounds relative to where we were at a year ago went a long way towards lowering pork because at the end of the day, that's that's what the hog producer is trying to sell is the pork.
00:06:41.680 --> 00:06:44.319
And we got to supply this stuff to the export market.
00:06:44.720 --> 00:06:51.519
Anything we can do to lower that number down is gonna help our ability for the cutout to go up.
00:06:51.839 --> 00:06:59.920
Um, you go back a couple weeks ago, even though we only had one percent more pigs, we had three and a half percent more pork.
00:07:00.720 --> 00:07:08.160
So now you fast forward it to this past week, you had one percent less pigs, and we only had one percent more pork.
00:07:08.240 --> 00:07:11.439
So that's why I think you're starting to see the cutout move.
00:07:12.480 --> 00:07:17.920
Speaking of a cutout, we posted a 103.50 last night, but we've seen a little trend change there.
00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:21.120
We've seen bellies and hams start to increase a little bit lately.
00:07:21.360 --> 00:07:23.920
So let's get into the demand side of things, Mike.
00:07:24.079 --> 00:07:25.519
What do you see out of that?
00:07:25.920 --> 00:07:30.000
Uh uh it's BLT season, second half of July.
00:07:30.160 --> 00:07:40.720
And I don't want to be one, I don't want to call out necessarily some of the stuff going on in in the world with um this lettuce issue that's been taking place.
00:07:40.800 --> 00:07:49.680
That does give me a little bit of a fear of BLT season from a timing perspective, um, with with lots of states getting impacted by this.
00:07:49.920 --> 00:08:02.319
Um, but it's BLT season, the second half of July, bellies have a tendency to run up and they get exaggerated a lot of times too high, and they get exaggerated sometimes too low.
00:08:02.639 --> 00:08:11.519
Um, so if you reference that graph and sitting in front of you there today, we've we've been comparing this year to 2024, I feel like for quite some time.
00:08:12.240 --> 00:08:18.160
Even in 2024, the belly market still mattered in the second half of July.
00:08:18.800 --> 00:08:27.120
The one thing you always want to be a little cautious about when it comes to bellies is if you have one belly too few, the price really goes up.
00:08:27.439 --> 00:08:32.080
If you have one pork belly too many, the price really falls off hard.
00:08:32.480 --> 00:08:34.960
And and that's seen most years.
00:08:35.120 --> 00:08:37.759
There's a really strong seasonal tendency to this thing.
00:08:37.919 --> 00:08:45.200
I think our belly market right now has gone up$30 from where we were at just recently.
00:08:45.679 --> 00:08:52.000
And you'll look back at across all these years, it might take weeks for the belly market to go up$30 or$50.
00:08:52.879 --> 00:09:03.279
And a lot of times when you get somewhere in the middle of August, the belly market has a tendency to lose several weeks' worth of gains all in one day.
00:09:03.600 --> 00:09:12.159
Um, and as soon as BLT season ends, or as soon as you get closer to having some Saturday kills in the mix again, that one does start to fall off.
00:09:13.039 --> 00:09:13.840
Interesting.
00:09:14.320 --> 00:09:16.159
Conscious optimism, right?
00:09:16.320 --> 00:09:18.879
Yeah, yeah, very much so.
00:09:19.120 --> 00:09:29.039
Any other thoughts export-wise, um, domestic demand, anything else worth mentioning that you see from a demand perspective, maybe consumer sentiment, anything like that?
00:09:29.360 --> 00:09:31.200
No, I maybe I'll hit on exports.
00:09:31.360 --> 00:09:42.720
Um, exports have been um the shipments have slowed, I feel like, some recently, and our new sales have also slowed some recently.
00:09:42.879 --> 00:09:50.879
And and if you sell pork, like for example, last week, whatever whatever we made for new sales last week is stuff that gets shipped in the weeks ahead.
00:09:51.039 --> 00:09:56.159
I've seen that starting to taper off some from where we began the first half of the year at.
00:09:56.639 --> 00:10:01.200
It's something that we need to keep our eyes on, especially as we go forward.
00:10:01.360 --> 00:10:05.200
Um, because a lot of our businesses with Mexico and a lot of that is hams.
00:10:06.159 --> 00:10:18.720
Um, you don't want to see exports slowing down, and I and I do think that writing is on the wall a little bit, so I'm like our actual shipments are starting to slow down here lately, but it's summer.
00:10:19.039 --> 00:10:22.559
Our grilling season demand is is at its peak.
00:10:22.720 --> 00:10:26.879
Um, you're at some of your tightest supply point in time.
00:10:27.360 --> 00:10:29.600
Hams have also done really well lately.
00:10:29.759 --> 00:10:32.320
Just again, cautious optimism on that one.
00:10:36.480 --> 00:10:38.000
For a while on both of those.
00:10:38.080 --> 00:10:43.759
So any other final thoughts, action items for our listeners here this week on the hog market, Mike?
00:10:44.320 --> 00:10:57.120
Um, if you're just looking at some, if you're looking for a fundamental improvement in hogs uh to help kind of stimulate these hog futures higher in the meantime, we're definitely in that time of year right now.
00:10:57.360 --> 00:11:02.240
So take a good look at what your margins look like as you're going out into the future.
00:11:02.399 --> 00:11:07.679
Um, I think margins are going to look really good for months like October and December at this point.
00:11:07.840 --> 00:11:14.559
And then they start to get pretty rough still as you as you start forecasting margins out into the first quarter of next year.
00:11:14.720 --> 00:11:20.240
But kind of time to catch up, I think, on making sure we all know where we need to be.
00:11:20.639 --> 00:11:21.919
Oh, that makes sense.
00:11:22.080 --> 00:11:24.639
Well, thank you for hopping on today, Mike.
00:11:24.720 --> 00:11:26.240
Thank you for spending some time with us.
00:11:26.320 --> 00:11:32.879
Uh, I know the hog market's been a little quiet the last few days compared to some of these markets, mainly on the input side there.
00:11:33.039 --> 00:11:37.840
The grain markets are really rallying uh to some pretty key resistance levels there.
00:11:38.080 --> 00:11:44.480
Soybeans making new highs, so meal's been running along with it, but the corn market has a little catching up to do there.
00:11:44.559 --> 00:11:49.919
Maybe the weather rally, uh, weather premiums still kind of pulled out of that corn market being a little bit later in the year.
00:11:50.080 --> 00:11:53.440
So something to mention there too, just with margins getting squeezed a little bit.
00:11:53.679 --> 00:11:58.320
Yes, hog features have been going up, but the input side's going against it a little bit too.
00:11:58.399 --> 00:12:03.519
And uh some other outrageous items like uh fuel has really gone up a lot.
00:12:03.679 --> 00:12:09.200
Uh diesel, egg diesel both have uh gone quite uh gone up quite a bit here as of late.
00:12:09.279 --> 00:12:11.840
So any further comments on the input side, Mike?
00:12:12.159 --> 00:12:13.200
Nope, I'm good.
00:12:13.440 --> 00:12:13.840
All right.
00:12:13.919 --> 00:12:15.200

Today is July 23rd.
00:00:23.440 --> 00:00:26.960
I've got Mike Fitzgerald joining us from the Mechanicsville office.
00:00:27.120 --> 00:00:28.239
How's it going today, Mike?
00:00:28.640 --> 00:00:29.120
It's great.
00:00:29.199 --> 00:00:30.079
Thanks for having me.
00:00:30.320 --> 00:00:30.719
Awesome.
00:00:30.800 --> 00:00:32.399
Well, this is a Hog Talk podcast.
00:00:32.479 --> 00:00:37.679
Let's give a big shout out to the futures here who have actually tried to go up recently, Mike.
00:00:37.840 --> 00:00:40.960
We've uh had a nice little run, uh August futures.
00:00:41.039 --> 00:00:44.640
We've traded just up over to uh 102 here recently.
00:00:44.799 --> 00:00:48.320
Uh what can you tell us about a little bit of the futures action recently?
00:00:48.560 --> 00:00:52.479
Kind of what we've seen for this change in pattern here since the beginning of June.
00:00:53.359 --> 00:00:57.920
Yeah, they definitely have had a bullish tone to these hog futures.
00:00:58.079 --> 00:01:03.039
Obviously, I think we we beat these things up enough back in June.
00:01:03.200 --> 00:01:07.280
So the the recovery bounces a little bit expected.
00:01:07.920 --> 00:01:14.159
Um, but yeah, we have had a lot of good fundamental improvements here in the last couple weeks.
00:01:14.480 --> 00:01:29.920
We've seen things like the cash market has kind of continuously, week after week, made new highs, and the cutout finally made a new year-to-date high recently and continues to move up.
00:01:30.400 --> 00:01:34.879
And hog futures are pretty enthusiastic with some of this news.
00:01:35.599 --> 00:01:39.760
When you say they're pretty enthusiastic, is that more front-heavy, back heavy?
00:01:39.920 --> 00:01:44.159
What's your take on on what futures are accounting for at the best?
00:01:45.760 --> 00:01:46.400
Both.
00:01:48.079 --> 00:01:50.239
They both had a lot of enthusiasm in it.
00:01:50.319 --> 00:01:54.719
And I I get that that's kind of a scapegoat for a answer here.
00:01:54.959 --> 00:01:58.480
Like in the example I would give you would be August hogs first.
00:01:59.120 --> 00:02:03.599
August hogs are traded as high as 102 this week.
00:02:03.840 --> 00:02:10.960
Um, they are still well ahead of what of what fundamentals suggest it should be, right?
00:02:11.039 --> 00:02:17.520
Uh the industry is staring down negative basis levels, kind of like we have been all year long.
00:02:17.759 --> 00:02:29.120
So not only has cutout and cash market improved, but August hog futures kind of represent that the cutout and cash markets have to improve more over the course of the next few weeks.
00:02:29.199 --> 00:02:32.080
And there's about three weeks left of the August contract.
00:02:32.719 --> 00:02:44.960
Now, with the deferred contracts, when I say they've been pretty enthusiastic, if I if I just grabbed normal seasonal tendencies, and we we spent some time staring at these this morning a little bit.
00:02:45.280 --> 00:02:53.840
Um hog futures would usually have a pretty deep discount in them for months like October or December.
00:02:54.240 --> 00:02:56.240
Um, and they do have a discount.
00:02:56.319 --> 00:03:00.000
Like the example I could give you today would be October Hog Futures at 88.
00:03:00.159 --> 00:03:03.680
That that that is$13 lower than what August is.
00:03:04.400 --> 00:03:14.719
Um I think the last three or five years, it would it would be closer to$15 or$16 lower than what August Hog Futures is.
00:03:15.039 --> 00:03:18.000
So it's it's got a little narrower spread than normal.
00:03:18.080 --> 00:03:21.520
There's plenty of enthusiasm, I think, in those deferred contracts.
00:03:21.919 --> 00:03:30.639
Obviously, a lot of producers in my neck of the woods would would be talking up things like a flatter cutout this year, right?
00:03:30.800 --> 00:03:43.759
If the cutout has been relatively flat for months, and if the cutouts doesn't have a huge run up in it in August, hog futures probably don't have to price in a huge drop as we head into October.
00:03:43.840 --> 00:03:46.000
Hence spreads would be a little narrower.
00:03:47.039 --> 00:03:51.439
What can you tell me about the supply situation you think going into the summer here?
00:03:51.680 --> 00:03:52.960
Just what you've seen lately.
00:03:53.039 --> 00:03:58.080
Uh, maybe just start on total numbers and then we can work on uh some weights, things like that.
00:03:58.159 --> 00:04:00.240
What are you seeing from the supply side, Mike?
00:04:00.560 --> 00:04:00.879
Yep.
00:04:01.039 --> 00:04:05.840
Last week, um, and and has been the case for the last couple weeks.
00:04:06.000 --> 00:04:09.599
We we anticipate what the harvest numbers are going to be.
00:04:09.840 --> 00:04:14.719
Um, the USDA continues to revise these numbers lower in hindsight.
00:04:14.800 --> 00:04:27.120
So last week we harvested about one percent less pigs, um, which is a nice change of pace because we I think we spent the last two months prior to this harvesting one percent more pigs.
00:04:27.279 --> 00:04:29.839
So finally got into a few tighter numbers.
00:04:30.000 --> 00:04:37.519
Like the chatter in the industry today would be boy, are we in a hole, or is this kind of a weight-impacted thing?
00:04:37.600 --> 00:04:40.879
And and heat temperature slowed pigs down.
00:04:40.959 --> 00:04:52.720
And I guess for right now, I would lean a little bit more in the latter, which would say the heat that the Midwest has faced over the last few weeks has has slowed down marketing some.
00:04:52.800 --> 00:05:00.720
And it's not not necessarily that we're short of pigs, it's more like we're just calling up the packer and canceling a few loads because they didn't grow very well.
00:05:01.279 --> 00:05:03.680
Hop over to the weight side there, Kate.
00:05:03.759 --> 00:05:05.680
Uh, let's have Mike talk about you.
00:05:05.839 --> 00:05:11.839
You mentioned the heat and the impact that's been having um on this uh uh on the marketings here.
00:05:12.160 --> 00:05:16.240
What would be your take on weights and how that's uh reacted with some of the heat?
00:05:16.480 --> 00:05:16.879
Yep.
00:05:17.199 --> 00:05:21.920
So you have the producer owned one pulled up there, and I I have some numbers in the top of my head.
00:05:22.000 --> 00:05:27.199
Maybe if you uh if you click on the combined, would be a little better reference point for me here.
00:05:27.519 --> 00:05:34.160
Um couple weeks ago, industry average carcass weights were sitting five pounds heavier than a year ago.
00:05:34.399 --> 00:05:46.480
I mean, it was it was a really big spread, and we had some of the heaviest carcass weights we've had in years, going back to even when when COVID was taking place, right?
00:05:46.560 --> 00:05:53.279
And our our packing plants were shutting down, and a lot of us were starting to wonder where in the world we're gonna market these pigs or what we're gonna do with them.
00:05:53.519 --> 00:05:59.040
We had them getting fed rationing diets and things like that, trying to slow them down.
00:05:59.199 --> 00:06:03.199
So we're rivaling carcass weights of that magnitude today.
00:06:03.439 --> 00:06:11.920
Um, and they fell off a lot, so we were five pounds heavier, and as of this week, I think we're closer to three pounds heavier year over year.
00:06:12.000 --> 00:06:15.519
So we're narrowing that gap in quite a bit with this heat.
00:06:16.959 --> 00:06:18.639
Nice overall production.
00:06:18.800 --> 00:06:22.079
You think uh anything else you've been seeing to have an impact there?
00:06:22.240 --> 00:06:23.759
Should we hop over to demand?
00:06:24.079 --> 00:06:29.040
Yeah, I mean, I'll just reference a little snippet here on the production side.
00:06:29.279 --> 00:06:41.600
Having carcass weights drop an extra two pounds relative to where we were at a year ago went a long way towards lowering pork because at the end of the day, that's that's what the hog producer is trying to sell is the pork.
00:06:41.680 --> 00:06:44.319
And we got to supply this stuff to the export market.
00:06:44.720 --> 00:06:51.519
Anything we can do to lower that number down is gonna help our ability for the cutout to go up.
00:06:51.839 --> 00:06:59.920
Um, you go back a couple weeks ago, even though we only had one percent more pigs, we had three and a half percent more pork.
00:07:00.720 --> 00:07:08.160
So now you fast forward it to this past week, you had one percent less pigs, and we only had one percent more pork.
00:07:08.240 --> 00:07:11.439
So that's why I think you're starting to see the cutout move.
00:07:12.480 --> 00:07:17.920
Speaking of a cutout, we posted a 103.50 last night, but we've seen a little trend change there.
00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:21.120
We've seen bellies and hams start to increase a little bit lately.
00:07:21.360 --> 00:07:23.920
So let's get into the demand side of things, Mike.
00:07:24.079 --> 00:07:25.519
What do you see out of that?
00:07:25.920 --> 00:07:30.000
Uh uh it's BLT season, second half of July.
00:07:30.160 --> 00:07:40.720
And I don't want to be one, I don't want to call out necessarily some of the stuff going on in in the world with um this lettuce issue that's been taking place.
00:07:40.800 --> 00:07:49.680
That does give me a little bit of a fear of BLT season from a timing perspective, um, with with lots of states getting impacted by this.
00:07:49.920 --> 00:08:02.319
Um, but it's BLT season, the second half of July, bellies have a tendency to run up and they get exaggerated a lot of times too high, and they get exaggerated sometimes too low.
00:08:02.639 --> 00:08:11.519
Um, so if you reference that graph and sitting in front of you there today, we've we've been comparing this year to 2024, I feel like for quite some time.
00:08:12.240 --> 00:08:18.160
Even in 2024, the belly market still mattered in the second half of July.
00:08:18.800 --> 00:08:27.120
The one thing you always want to be a little cautious about when it comes to bellies is if you have one belly too few, the price really goes up.
00:08:27.439 --> 00:08:32.080
If you have one pork belly too many, the price really falls off hard.
00:08:32.480 --> 00:08:34.960
And and that's seen most years.
00:08:35.120 --> 00:08:37.759
There's a really strong seasonal tendency to this thing.
00:08:37.919 --> 00:08:45.200
I think our belly market right now has gone up$30 from where we were at just recently.
00:08:45.679 --> 00:08:52.000
And you'll look back at across all these years, it might take weeks for the belly market to go up$30 or$50.
00:08:52.879 --> 00:09:03.279
And a lot of times when you get somewhere in the middle of August, the belly market has a tendency to lose several weeks' worth of gains all in one day.
00:09:03.600 --> 00:09:12.159
Um, and as soon as BLT season ends, or as soon as you get closer to having some Saturday kills in the mix again, that one does start to fall off.
00:09:13.039 --> 00:09:13.840
Interesting.
00:09:14.320 --> 00:09:16.159
Conscious optimism, right?
00:09:16.320 --> 00:09:18.879
Yeah, yeah, very much so.
00:09:19.120 --> 00:09:29.039
Any other thoughts export-wise, um, domestic demand, anything else worth mentioning that you see from a demand perspective, maybe consumer sentiment, anything like that?
00:09:29.360 --> 00:09:31.200
No, I maybe I'll hit on exports.
00:09:31.360 --> 00:09:42.720
Um, exports have been um the shipments have slowed, I feel like, some recently, and our new sales have also slowed some recently.
00:09:42.879 --> 00:09:50.879
And and if you sell pork, like for example, last week, whatever whatever we made for new sales last week is stuff that gets shipped in the weeks ahead.
00:09:51.039 --> 00:09:56.159
I've seen that starting to taper off some from where we began the first half of the year at.
00:09:56.639 --> 00:10:01.200
It's something that we need to keep our eyes on, especially as we go forward.
00:10:01.360 --> 00:10:05.200
Um, because a lot of our businesses with Mexico and a lot of that is hams.
00:10:06.159 --> 00:10:18.720
Um, you don't want to see exports slowing down, and I and I do think that writing is on the wall a little bit, so I'm like our actual shipments are starting to slow down here lately, but it's summer.
00:10:19.039 --> 00:10:22.559
Our grilling season demand is is at its peak.
00:10:22.720 --> 00:10:26.879
Um, you're at some of your tightest supply point in time.
00:10:27.360 --> 00:10:29.600
Hams have also done really well lately.
00:10:29.759 --> 00:10:32.320
Just again, cautious optimism on that one.
00:10:36.480 --> 00:10:38.000
For a while on both of those.
00:10:38.080 --> 00:10:43.759
So any other final thoughts, action items for our listeners here this week on the hog market, Mike?
00:10:44.320 --> 00:10:57.120
Um, if you're just looking at some, if you're looking for a fundamental improvement in hogs uh to help kind of stimulate these hog futures higher in the meantime, we're definitely in that time of year right now.
00:10:57.360 --> 00:11:02.240
So take a good look at what your margins look like as you're going out into the future.
00:11:02.399 --> 00:11:07.679
Um, I think margins are going to look really good for months like October and December at this point.
00:11:07.840 --> 00:11:14.559
And then they start to get pretty rough still as you as you start forecasting margins out into the first quarter of next year.
00:11:14.720 --> 00:11:20.240
But kind of time to catch up, I think, on making sure we all know where we need to be.
00:11:20.639 --> 00:11:21.919
Oh, that makes sense.
00:11:22.080 --> 00:11:24.639
Well, thank you for hopping on today, Mike.
00:11:24.720 --> 00:11:26.240
Thank you for spending some time with us.
00:11:26.320 --> 00:11:32.879
Uh, I know the hog market's been a little quiet the last few days compared to some of these markets, mainly on the input side there.
00:11:33.039 --> 00:11:37.840
The grain markets are really rallying uh to some pretty key resistance levels there.
00:11:38.080 --> 00:11:44.480
Soybeans making new highs, so meal's been running along with it, but the corn market has a little catching up to do there.
00:11:44.559 --> 00:11:49.919
Maybe the weather rally, uh, weather premiums still kind of pulled out of that corn market being a little bit later in the year.
00:11:50.080 --> 00:11:53.440
So something to mention there too, just with margins getting squeezed a little bit.
00:11:53.679 --> 00:11:58.320
Yes, hog features have been going up, but the input side's going against it a little bit too.
00:11:58.399 --> 00:12:03.519
And uh some other outrageous items like uh fuel has really gone up a lot.
00:12:03.679 --> 00:12:09.200
Uh diesel, egg diesel both have uh gone quite uh gone up quite a bit here as of late.
00:12:09.279 --> 00:12:11.840
So any further comments on the input side, Mike?
00:12:12.159 --> 00:12:13.200
Nope, I'm good.
00:12:13.440 --> 00:12:13.840
All right.
00:12:13.919 --> 00:12:15.200
