In this episode, Kenny Barnwell and Shannon Thompson have an honest conversation about Halloween, horror movies, witchcraft, spiritual influence, personal conviction, and what it looks like to navigate the holiday as a Christian.
Both Kenny and Shannon share how their families participated in Halloween with their kids through costumes, trick-or-treating, and family traditions, while also acknowledging that becoming more serious about their faith has caused them to think differently about what they allow into their homes and minds.
The conversation explores the origins of Halloween, its connection to older spiritual traditions, modern Satanic perspectives, horror movies, witches, ghosts, Harry Potter, Ouija boards, and whether Christians can participate in certain parts of the holiday without embracing the darkness associated with others.
Kenny shares how his own convictions have changed since becoming a Christian. He is comfortable letting his children dress up and get candy, but draws boundaries around witchcraft, occult imagery, and entertainment he feels could negatively influence them.
That leads into Romans 14 and a bigger conversation about Christian liberty and personal conviction. Some believers may choose to avoid Halloween completely, while others may participate without feeling they are compromising their faith. The question becomes less about judging someone else’s decision and more about honestly examining your own heart before God.
Questions like:
- Should Christians celebrate or participate in Halloween?
- Is Halloween spiritually dangerous?
- Can Christians watch horror movies?
- Is entertainment involving witches or ghosts harmless?
- Should Christian parents let their children trick-or-treat?
- Can something be wrong for one Christian but not another?
- How do we know when something crosses from entertainment into spiritual influence?
- How should Christians respond to believers who have different convictions?
And more...
We do not pretend to have all the answers. This is a real conversation between two Christians learning how to discern what they allow into their lives while resisting the temptation to judge other believers over disputable matters.
The takeaway is not that every Christian has to approach Halloween exactly the same way.
Know your heart.
Know your convictions.
Guard what you allow to influence you and your family.
Keep Jesus at the center.
And give other believers room to follow their convictions without condemnation.
