Tiny Pests, Big Problems: Ant Infestations in Late Summer

Tiny Pests, Big Problems: Ant Infestations in Late
Summer
Hey folks, Will White here from Nexus Pest Solutions, and let’s talk about something that
gets under everyone’s skin – ants. Specifically, those unwelcome houseguests that decide
late summer is the perfect time to throw a party in your kitchen. If you’ve been seeing a few
more creepy crawlies than usual, you’re not alone. August is practically “last call” for a lot of
these little guys to stock up before the cool Wisconsin weather rolls in. And guess what? Your
home looks like the perfect all-you-can-eat buffet.
Now, I know what some of you are thinking: “It’s just a few ants, no big deal.” And that’s where
you’d be wrong, dead wrong. Those “few ants” you’re seeing? They’re usually scouts. They’re
the advance team, checking out the real estate, sniffing out the good eats, and reporting back
to a whole army that’s just waiting for the green light to move in. And believe me, when an ant
colony decides to move in, they don’t exactly wipe their feet. They’ll be raiding your kitchen,
your bathroom, even setting up shop inside your walls. It’s a total invasion, and it’s no fun for
anyone.
The Usual Suspects: Most Common August Ants in SE Wisconsin
Around here in Southeast Wisconsin, we see a few different types of ants that really kick into
high gear in August. Knowing who you’re dealing with is the first step to getting them out.
First up, we’ve got the Pavement Ant. These are your standard, run-of-the-mill, dark brown
to black ants that you’ll often see on sidewalks and driveways. But don’t let their outdoor
preference fool you; they love to sneak into basements, garages, and even ground-floor living
areas, especially if there are cracks in your foundation or a leaky pipe somewhere. They’re
constantly foraging for food, and your pantry is a goldmine.
Then there are the Odorous House Ants. Now, these little guys are sneaky. They’re small,
dark, and fast. You might not even notice them until you accidentally crush one. And when you
do, well, you’ll know it. They get their name from the distinct, rotten coconut smell they emit
when squished. Not exactly a pleasant perfume, is it? These ants are notorious for invading
kitchens, getting into your food, and setting up trails right across your countertops. They love
sugary foods, which means your fruit bowl or a spilled juice can become a major attraction.
And finally, the big one, the one that can really cause some headaches: Carpenter Ants.
These aren’t your typical food scavengers. While they will forage for food inside your home,
their main objective is to set up shop in wood. Unlike termites, they don’t eat wood; they
tunnel through it to create their nests. This means they can cause significant structural
damage to your home over time. We’re talking about window sills, door frames, support
beams – anywhere there’s damp or decaying wood, they’ll find a way in. Seeing these guys is
a red flag that you might have a bigger problem on your hands.
Signs You’ve Got a Problem Brewing
So, how do you know if those few ants are just lone rangers or if they’re the advance party for
a much larger operation? Keep an eye out for these tell-tale signs:
● Trails of ants in your kitchen or pantry: This is the most obvious sign. If you’re seeing a
steady stream of ants marching in a line, they’ve found a food source and are bringing it
back to the colony. And trust me, that colony is much bigger than you think.
● Ants around dishwashers, sinks, or pet food: These areas provide water and food
crumbs, making them prime targets. If you’re consistently seeing ants congregating here,
it’s a strong indication of an infestation. Don’t leave pet food out overnight, and always
clean up spills immediately.
● Piles of sawdust near wood trim (especially for carpenter ants): This is a huge red
f
lag for carpenter ants. They excavate wood to create their galleries, and the “sawdust”
(which is actually frass, a mix of wood particles and insect waste) will be pushed out of
their tunnels. If you see this, call us immediately. This isn’t a problem you want to ignore.
Nexus’s Targeted Ant Control: We Get to the Source
At Nexus Pest Solutions, we don’t just spray a little something and hope for the best. We
understand that every ant infestation is unique, and we tailor our approach to eliminate the
colony at its source. We’re not interested in just getting rid of the ants you see; we want to get
rid of the ants you don’t see, and make sure they don’t come back.
Our approach is comprehensive and effective:
● Interior and exterior baiting: This is a crucial step. We use specially formulated baits
that ants take back to their colony. The bait is designed to be slow-acting, so the ants
have time to share it with the queen and the rest of the colony before they die. This
effectively wipes out the entire nest from the inside out. We strategically place these
baits where ants are actively foraging, both inside and outside your home, to ensure
maximum effectiveness.
● Crack and crevice treatments: Ants are masters of finding the smallest entry points. We
meticulously treat cracks and crevices where ants are entering your home or nesting. This
creates a barrier and eliminates hiding spots, forcing them out or killing them on contact.
We target baseboards, window frames, door frames, and any other tiny gaps they might
be exploiting.
● Long-lasting barrier protection: To prevent future infestations, we apply a protective
barrier around the exterior of your home. This acts as a repellent, deterring new ants
from attempting to enter. It’s like putting up a “no trespassing” sign that ants actually
understand. This barrier is designed to stand up to the elements and provide ongoing
protection.
Don’t Wait, Don’t Hesitate!
Look, I can’t stress this enough: don’t ignore “a few ants.” They are rarely just “a few ants.”
They are often just the tip of the iceberg, scouts for hundreds, if not thousands, more that are
lurking out of sight. A small problem now can quickly escalate into a massive, frustrating, and
potentially damaging infestation.
Trying to tackle a full-blown ant problem yourself with store-bought sprays is often a losing
battle. You might kill the ants you see, but you’re not getting to the queen, and as long as
she’s alive, the colony will keep producing more ants. It’s like trying to bail out a leaky boat
with a teacup – you’re just not going to keep up.
At Nexus Pest Solutions, we have the expertise, the tools, and the experience to identify the
type of ant, locate their nests, and implement a targeted strategy that eliminates the colony
at the source. We’ll get those tiny pests out of your home so you can enjoy the rest of your
late summer without sharing it with an army of ants.
Give us a call today. Let Nexus take care of your ant problem so you don’t have to. You’ll be
glad you did.
