MURDAUGH OVERTURNED 4 - Unknown Male DNA Under Maggie's Nails

In this episode of Murdaugh Overturned – The Tide Turns, we break down the explosive new motion filed by Alec Murdaugh’s defense—one that could reshape the upcoming retrial. At the center of the controversy is Item 70, the DNA collected from beneath Maggie Murdaugh’s left fingernails. SLED determined the DNA belonged to an unknown, unrelated male, yet performed no further analysis.

Now Alec’s defense is demanding independent testing by Othram, a cutting‑edge forensic lab known for solving complex cases like Bryan Kohberger’s. During a July 7, 2026 Webex meeting with Othram’s CEO, SLED, prosecutors, and defense counsel, the State quietly revealed something shocking: reserve samples of the unknown male DNA still exist—samples never disclosed to Alec’s attorneys until that moment.

The State wants to retest the DNA using the same STR method that previously failed to identify anyone. The defense argues this could destroy the remaining evidence, just as repeated SLED testing once destroyed Alec’s shirt while trying to prove nonexistent blood spatter.

We revisit DNA analyst Sarah Zapata’s testimony, where she confirmed the sample contained a Y chromosome, meaning the contributor was male and part of a paternal lineage. Yet every tested Murdaugh and Cook man was excluded. Zapata’s comparison showed the DNA was 11 times more likely to belong to an unidentified, unrelated male than to C.B. Rowe—reinforcing the possibility of an unknown assailant.

This episode exposes the contradictions, omissions, and forensic decisions that now sit at the heart of Alec’s retrial. If Item 70 is fully analyzed using SNP testing, the truth may finally surface—and the tide may turn
