Are digital communities replacing the places we used to meet? In episode three of the Human Intelligence Podcast, Andy and Mark take on a topic neither of them fully understood at first: third places. First place is home, second place is work, and third places are the pubs, cafés, bars and other spots where we used to bump into friends and neighbours without planning it. With so much of our social life now happening in group chats, online groups and networking communities, are those digital spaces replacing the real thing, or just giving us another option?
Along the way, we talk about whether staying in is convenience or laziness, how choosing our online communities compares with taking whoever walks into the pub, how digital spaces help people who feel isolated or left out, what lockdown taught us, and what happens when the person running an online community decides to switch it off. We also turn to second places, looking at how working from home has changed offices, why some people thrive on their own while others need a team around them, and why managing output might matter more than seeing people at their desks. Before all that, we address the AI Pilates booking short from episode one that picked up 130,000 views on TikTok and a lot of strong opinions.
THE TAKEAWAY: Digital communities aren't a replacement for in-person ones. They're a tool. They open the door to far more people, and they give anyone who wants to take things in person a much easier route to get there.
YOUR TURN: Have digital communities been a big part of your life? Do you prefer working from home or in the office? Tell us in the comments, along with any topics you'd like us to cover in a future episode.
