00:00:00.320 --> 00:00:13.199
I knew someone that um has a vision to open a program to help victims of human trafficking and I'd only learned a little bit about it and I said, Oh my gosh, I'm all in.
00:00:13.199 --> 00:00:16.559
He said, She has a vision, but she doesn't know how.
00:00:16.559 --> 00:00:19.440
And I've run very large organizations.
00:00:19.440 --> 00:00:23.199
And so that was then, and here we are now.
00:00:23.199 --> 00:00:24.960
We've been open almost nine years.
00:00:24.960 --> 00:00:27.199
We've served over 400 women.
00:00:27.519 --> 00:00:29.679
Hi everyone, and welcome to Highlight Her.
00:00:29.679 --> 00:00:33.280
Before we get into the episode, I invite you to hit the follow button.
00:00:33.280 --> 00:00:38.799
It helps the show get delivered into your feed, and it's a free way to support the podcast.
00:00:38.799 --> 00:00:45.039
Today's featured guest is Karen of Sanctum House in Oakland County, Michigan, in the United States.
00:00:45.039 --> 00:00:51.520
I'm excited to chat with her because she does important work helping trafficking victims get back to life.
00:00:51.520 --> 00:00:56.880
Let's get started and add her to the highlight her circle of season three.
00:00:56.880 --> 00:00:57.920
Hi, Karen.
00:00:58.479 --> 00:01:00.320
Hi, thank you for inviting me.
00:01:00.640 --> 00:01:02.560
Thank you so much for joining us today.
00:01:02.560 --> 00:01:10.400
I heard you and Jen, who's in the background, and also one of your survivor friends at my church.
00:01:10.400 --> 00:01:16.879
And I am going to admit that I know very little when it comes to the world of trafficking.
00:01:16.879 --> 00:01:18.239
I know that it's serious.
00:01:18.239 --> 00:01:26.879
I know that I live in an area on the highway 75 down into Ohio that's a big area for trafficking.
00:01:26.879 --> 00:01:29.599
I know it's extremely sad.
00:01:29.599 --> 00:01:31.200
It's horrific.
00:01:31.200 --> 00:01:34.319
But other than those things, I don't know a lot about it.
00:01:34.319 --> 00:01:55.920
And so when you guys came to my church, I thought it would be a great connection for the podcast to help me learn more, to help you guys get the word out and just hopefully maybe even someone hears this and needs some help and we can help someone connect with you or another resource just to get them some hope and healing.
00:01:56.159 --> 00:01:57.280
Yes, absolutely.
00:01:57.280 --> 00:02:11.199
This is one of the most important parts of our mission is community education because Jenny, as you mentioned, it's going on everywhere and it there are no socioeconomic um barriers to it.
00:02:11.199 --> 00:02:14.800
It's a very profitable illegal network.
00:02:14.800 --> 00:02:29.280
And uh the more we can uh communicate and uh let people understand the realities versus versus the sensation on the sensational sides of it, that's the only um prevention that there is.
00:02:29.280 --> 00:02:38.400
So I appreciate this opportunity to share the work that we do and the realities of what's going on with human trafficking.
00:02:38.719 --> 00:02:43.280
So, as a founder of a nonprofit, Karen, what do you think is your superpower?
00:02:43.759 --> 00:03:06.159
Well, my if it is a superpower, my goal with leading an organization is to provide the opportunities for everyone in the organization to be successful, whether it be, you know, education or knowledge or skills, you know, challenges that meet, you know, what their intent is.
00:03:06.159 --> 00:03:24.479
Because when people feel they're valued and can reach, you know, strive for their personal potentials, it could be because they're a therapist or they're good at um doing scheduling or like Jen being out in the market and you know, you know, telling people about us.
00:03:24.479 --> 00:03:27.520
Everyone has a gift and everyone has a skill.
00:03:27.520 --> 00:03:36.960
And it's enabling providing an environment for them to, you know, excel as much as possible on what they each have to offer.
00:03:36.960 --> 00:03:39.039
Because we all have something to offer.
00:03:39.039 --> 00:03:44.240
And um when we're all doing our best, we're all better for it.
00:03:44.479 --> 00:03:46.639
I think that's a beautiful superpower.
00:03:46.639 --> 00:03:56.719
So going back to the beginning, you have a lot of executive experience, first with Ford, then with Ladywood High School.
00:03:56.719 --> 00:04:07.520
What inspired you in the middle of all that leadership to say, hey, I think I'll create a place for victims of trafficking to find their strength and work towards recovery?
00:04:07.759 --> 00:04:12.960
Well, I was very fortunate, very blessed to grow up in a very healthy family.
00:04:12.960 --> 00:04:15.520
I was, you know, I had a good life.
00:04:15.520 --> 00:04:17.279
I had a very good education.
00:04:17.279 --> 00:04:20.079
I came from, you know, a loving family.
00:04:20.079 --> 00:04:28.959
One of the things that they always instilled, my parents instilled in me is those that are given are those that need to give back.
00:04:28.959 --> 00:04:31.279
And, you know, I had a good education.
00:04:31.279 --> 00:04:35.519
I went to great, very good schools and I did well at Ford Motor Company.
00:04:35.519 --> 00:04:48.720
I was a global executive, but there was always something that was lingering in me that I have more to give, and that is a part of who I am that I wasn't fulfilling.
00:04:48.720 --> 00:04:55.439
So when I took my early retirement, I decided this is this is my time.
00:04:55.439 --> 00:04:58.079
This is going to be my chapter to give back.
00:04:58.079 --> 00:04:59.600
It was not planned.
00:04:59.600 --> 00:05:08.560
I never planned to go into academia, but long story short, I was asked to be uh the president and CEO of Ladywood High School.
00:05:08.560 --> 00:05:15.439
And I welcomed it because life, you know, the challenges you take, and you know, that you know, pick it up.
00:05:15.439 --> 00:05:16.399
And I loved it.
00:05:16.399 --> 00:05:23.199
And it was my first step into nonprofits and the nonprofit world, which is very different from the corporate world.
00:05:23.199 --> 00:05:24.879
So I learned a lot.
00:05:24.879 --> 00:05:30.399
And I was, you know, I did private schools for my education.
00:05:30.399 --> 00:05:38.160
I have great value for the education given in the private schools for those that are able to, you know, to go.
00:05:38.160 --> 00:05:43.680
And while I was there, I started hearing, you know, about human trafficking.
00:05:43.680 --> 00:05:47.360
And Ladywood is an all-girl, private school, college prep.
00:05:47.360 --> 00:05:52.720
And I looked at all these girls and I thought, oh my gosh, you know, it just really hit my heart.
00:05:52.720 --> 00:05:58.079
And um, coincidentally, I had a friend that said, I know someone.
00:05:58.079 --> 00:06:02.399
Now, this goes back to probably 20 uh 10 or 2012.
00:06:02.399 --> 00:06:15.600
I know someone that um has a vision to open a program to help victims of human trafficking, and I had only learned a little bit about it, and I said, Oh my gosh, I'm all in.
00:06:15.600 --> 00:06:18.959
He said, She has a vision, but she doesn't know how.
00:06:18.959 --> 00:06:25.600
And I've run very large organizations, and so that was then, and here we are now.
00:06:25.600 --> 00:06:27.360
We've been open almost nine years.
00:06:27.360 --> 00:06:32.959
We've served over 400 women, and we're now we have state funding, federal funding.
00:06:32.959 --> 00:06:41.519
We have a strong presence at the state and at the federal level, and we're we have um funds to expand in the light of everything that's going on.
00:06:41.519 --> 00:06:48.959
So, but it wasn't me that did it, it was putting the team together and and the right people came at the right time.
00:06:48.959 --> 00:07:07.600
And um we're I'm proud to say, the leadership team, um, we've been together since the beginning, and here we are, and we're doing really good things, and and the thing that we is always the top priority is the focus on those that we serve.
00:07:07.600 --> 00:07:09.439
I had a good life.
00:07:09.439 --> 00:07:15.600
There's no reason that the women that we serve didn't have the opportunities that I have.
00:07:15.600 --> 00:07:17.920
It's uh I just believe it's not fair.
00:07:17.920 --> 00:07:33.920
So it's personally for me, it's it's my goal to build a team and to build the relationships in the community with the government to provide the same opportunities I had afforded to me to those that are underserved.
00:07:34.319 --> 00:07:39.680
You have a lot of programs and services at Sanctum House.
00:07:39.680 --> 00:07:42.639
I was peeking at your website, I had kind of forgotten.
00:07:42.639 --> 00:07:45.920
And I think it's amazing what you've put together.
00:07:45.920 --> 00:07:48.079
And it goes to what you're saying right now.
00:07:48.079 --> 00:07:52.079
You want to give these women the same opportunities that you had.
00:07:52.079 --> 00:07:57.199
Can you tell our audience a little bit about the services and programs that you have available?
00:07:57.519 --> 00:08:05.920
Well, we provide, and all these services are at no cost to any of the women that come through our program full physical health care.
00:08:05.920 --> 00:08:10.399
And that was through developing a partnership with Trinity Healthcare.
00:08:10.399 --> 00:08:14.160
Since we opened, they provide all health care to our women.
00:08:14.160 --> 00:08:28.399
It could be a cold shot, a flu shot, COVID shot, or it could be a back surgery or going through an unknown when they arrived at our program, they did not know they were pregnant and wanted to carry the baby through.
00:08:28.399 --> 00:08:33.120
Trinity has been there right from the start and continues to be.
00:08:33.120 --> 00:10:03.120
There's so many uh, you know, professional opportunities or even educational opportunities that you know you can't qualify for.
00:10:03.120 --> 00:10:15.039
So we we treat it as the whole person, you know, um, mentally, physically, you know, legally, whatever their needs are, uh, the everyone's journey is individual.
00:10:15.039 --> 00:10:17.440
We have a great case management team.
00:10:17.440 --> 00:10:23.919
Every new resident, a participant when they arrive, develops a plan that they participate in developing.
00:10:23.919 --> 00:10:25.039
Do they want to go to school?
00:10:25.039 --> 00:10:29.840
Do they want to get their high school diploma that they never had the opportunity for?
00:10:29.840 --> 00:10:37.039
Or we've had very educated women, lawyers, doctors, medical doctors, social workers.
00:10:37.039 --> 00:10:38.320
What do they want to do?
00:10:38.320 --> 00:10:42.399
What what were those goals that were robbed from them?
00:10:42.399 --> 00:10:44.159
And we help them achieve them.
00:10:44.399 --> 00:10:44.960
I love that.
00:10:44.960 --> 00:10:47.360
And it's a two-year voluntary program, right?
00:10:47.519 --> 00:10:49.120
Yes, it's voluntary.
00:10:49.120 --> 00:10:54.080
They choose to come, um, and they also can choose to leave if it's not the right fit.
00:10:54.080 --> 00:10:55.679
And sometimes it's not the right fit.
00:10:55.679 --> 00:10:59.360
Sometimes, you know, um, they're not ready because it's hard work.
00:10:59.360 --> 00:11:06.399
You know, we provide the tools, we provide the opportunities for education, for therapy, for physical health.
00:11:06.399 --> 00:11:08.799
Sometimes they're not ready, and that's okay.
00:11:08.799 --> 00:11:12.559
And then we get them to someplace else that hopefully is safe.
00:11:12.559 --> 00:11:18.320
And then if another another day comes, they're ready as long as we have available space.
00:11:18.320 --> 00:11:21.440
Um, we welcome them back, which has happened many times.
00:11:21.679 --> 00:11:24.159
How many, how many women can you house?
00:11:24.399 --> 00:11:31.360
Currently 12, and we are at capacity, and um, we have the federal funds to expand.
00:11:31.360 --> 00:11:35.759
So I just signed the purchase agreement a little over a week ago.
00:11:35.759 --> 00:11:46.799
So by the end of the year, we'll uh we'll have a three and a half acre campus, a healing campus, and we're gonna do some rehab on the houses, and by the end of next year, we'll almost triple our capacity.
00:11:47.120 --> 00:11:48.879
Wow, that's amazing.
00:11:48.879 --> 00:11:50.000
So good team.
00:11:50.799 --> 00:11:55.360
And this isn't uh this isn't me doing this, this is everybody together doing it.
00:11:55.360 --> 00:12:00.720
So, and our partners in the community and our partners at the state and federal level.
00:12:00.720 --> 00:12:01.519
So, yeah.
00:12:01.759 --> 00:12:10.240
That goes back to your superpower of helping people bring out their gifts and succeed in their strengths.
00:12:10.240 --> 00:12:21.039
And when I think when you're doing that for people, it energizes them and helps your mission in addition to helping all these women, and it just is a perpetual circle.
00:12:21.279 --> 00:12:23.840
Yeah, you know, we all have different gifts.
00:12:23.840 --> 00:12:29.679
My goal, my role is to help them find it and let and help them excel.
00:12:29.679 --> 00:12:36.799
You know, it's very hard work, it's very dark work, but we find the kindest and the best people to partner with us.
00:12:36.799 --> 00:12:42.720
We have great volunteers, we have great partners in the community, the the churches, as you mentioned.
00:12:42.720 --> 00:12:48.720
Um uh we're there speaking um, I think last year, was it, or earlier this year?
00:12:48.720 --> 00:12:55.519
Um, but we um the universities we work with the University of Michigan, Wayne State University.
00:12:55.519 --> 00:12:58.879
Um, we're just um very active in the community.
00:12:58.879 --> 00:13:02.799
We do a lot of work with law enforcement, with the attorney general's office.
00:13:02.799 --> 00:13:05.679
Um Jen has opened an opportunity.
00:13:05.679 --> 00:13:15.519
We're gonna be speaking with law enforcement and downriver this coming week on you know, um appropriate interaction with who's the victim.
00:13:15.519 --> 00:13:18.879
Who's the who's the criminal and who's the victim when you pull people over?
00:13:18.879 --> 00:13:24.159
Just because it's a woman that's you know might be having an overdose doesn't mean she's the criminal.
00:13:24.159 --> 00:13:38.480
So this the we're having some really important conversations that you know can change people's lives and change how the community thinks of those women that we serve.
00:13:38.799 --> 00:13:43.120
So you mentioned you've served so far about 400 women.
00:13:43.120 --> 00:13:46.720
Do you ever have a moment where you think this is why I do this?
00:13:46.960 --> 00:13:48.080
Oh, so often.
00:13:48.080 --> 00:13:55.679
I mean, we have a woman that um is going to be transitioning out next week and we're having a party for her.
00:13:55.679 --> 00:14:08.639
And she came in to see me today because I work with them on one of the things I love doing with the women because my role is a lot in the community and keeping it funded and interaction and partnerships.
00:14:08.639 --> 00:14:28.320
But one of the things I really like to do with the women is help them develop good financial habits and saving rather than, you know, you get money spend, spend, you know, so that um when they do get ready to transition and move on, that they have, you know, you know, a good, you know, have a bank account.
00:14:28.320 --> 00:14:34.559
And one of the women, she came in to see me today and she said, you know, Karen, and and this is so cool.
00:14:34.559 --> 00:14:46.799
She had a child while she was being trafficked, and um her parents had have guardianship of her son, and she never thought that she would be able to parent him.
00:14:46.799 --> 00:14:52.559
She's been with us over a little over two years, and she is moving out next week.
00:14:52.559 --> 00:14:59.679
She's getting an apartment near her parents, and she is going to be the parent to her four-year-old son.
00:14:59.679 --> 00:15:00.080
Oh.
00:15:00.080 --> 00:15:03.919
And she will eventually have full guardianship.
00:15:03.919 --> 00:15:20.639
And I mean, you know, in their story, one after another, it's one person at a time who, when she came in, she, you know, um, she struggled with her addictions and with with everything, but she's she's done the hard work and and through it all.
00:15:20.639 --> 00:15:30.320
She had a you know, a good job was saving her money, and she came in to see me today and she says, Karen, um, I'm ready to take uh my money with me.
00:15:30.320 --> 00:15:35.519
And it just uh so you know, I know it's beautiful.
00:15:35.519 --> 00:15:43.279
And then there's the little ones, like you know, um woman that is so talented, she's an artist, but nobody ever cared.
00:15:43.279 --> 00:15:46.480
She's young, she's probably 22, 23.
00:15:46.480 --> 00:15:52.960
And um now because she's in a safe place, she's she's doing her artwork.
00:15:52.960 --> 00:15:59.679
And uh Zach, who was on the call earlier, um, he's gonna exhibit it at Wings of Courage.
00:15:59.679 --> 00:16:15.120
Um so they're finding their, you know, who they are, and the it's the little moments that are so rewarding, and just even when the tough days are, you know, it's you you just look at them and you just you just feel good.
00:16:15.440 --> 00:16:18.720
Do they uh develop relationships among themselves?
00:16:18.960 --> 00:16:25.919
Oh, they're sisters for life because they've walked a walk that you know, fortunately many of us haven't.
00:16:25.919 --> 00:16:30.720
And it's yeah, it's a lifelong relationship, and they still take stay in touch.
00:16:30.720 --> 00:16:33.919
Those that have come and gone in gone over the years.
00:16:33.919 --> 00:16:38.399
Many of them come back and work with us, work, you know, work at Sanctum House.
00:16:38.399 --> 00:16:47.360
We have staff 24 or 7 or the and they mentor those that come behind them, and you know, they can understand it better than any of us can.
00:16:47.360 --> 00:16:47.840
Yeah.
00:16:48.159 --> 00:16:57.600
So you mentioned you were at Lady Wood School and you're just looking around at these girls, and you had just started learning about trafficking.
00:16:57.600 --> 00:17:10.720
To give our audience perspective, if we're sitting around a group of women, a group of young girls, what are the statistics on how many people in that group might end up in trafficking?
00:17:11.039 --> 00:17:24.799
Well, there's really no accurate statistics on trafficking because traffickers don't call into a hotline and say, I've got 15 or 25 in my stable and I lost three last month to overdose.
00:17:24.799 --> 00:17:29.039
So it's under-reported and it's very well hidden.
00:17:29.039 --> 00:17:40.880
And so the only in accurate information is those that um victims or knowledgeable people or people that suspect something call into the national hotline.
00:17:40.880 --> 00:17:45.359
And that's what we always recommend or contact, you know, local law enforcement.
00:17:45.359 --> 00:17:49.920
But it's, you know, $150 billion business a year.
00:17:49.920 --> 00:17:52.480
You can drug dealers get out of selling drugs.
00:17:52.480 --> 00:17:56.960
If you've got, you know, some crack or heroin or fentanyl, whatever, you can sell it once.
00:17:56.960 --> 00:17:58.480
And if you get caught, you're caught.
00:17:58.480 --> 00:17:59.599
There's not much you can say.
00:17:59.599 --> 00:18:05.599
If you've got a curt, cute girl or boy or woman or man, it doesn't matter.
00:18:05.599 --> 00:18:07.119
It's a human being.
00:18:07.119 --> 00:18:08.960
You've got a renewable commodity.
00:18:08.960 --> 00:18:17.519
So then use them five, six times a night, night after night, week after week, year after year, and they're just pulling in the cash.
00:18:17.519 --> 00:18:23.920
So, I mean, it's going on in Birmingham, women from you know, Ann Arbor, West Bloomfield High School.
00:18:23.920 --> 00:18:27.839
A lot of people think it's in, you know, poverty areas.
00:18:27.839 --> 00:18:36.799
I mean, it is, but it's everywhere else too, because yeah, just think the the cuter, the more polished they are, the more money you can charge for them.
00:18:36.799 --> 00:18:40.240
I mean, I speak at Bloomfield Hills High School every year.
00:18:40.240 --> 00:18:46.480
And just a couple years ago, um, one of the girls there, she's a senior.
00:18:46.480 --> 00:18:57.680
I she was in the talk that I did and when she was a junior, she said, um, last year, you know, I was listening to, you know, you say, you know, look for something different.
00:18:57.680 --> 00:19:02.319
You know, there's nothing magic to say this is what you look for, it's behavioral.
00:19:02.319 --> 00:19:19.680
You know, if you're high school or middle school um student, if one of your lifelong friends is all of a sudden doing something different, or maybe not hanging around with the same crowd, or maybe all of a sudden you got an iPad or you got an iPhone, or you know, something's different.
00:19:19.680 --> 00:19:23.119
Just be aware, you know, talk to a counselor, talk to a parent.
00:19:23.119 --> 00:19:28.240
And, you know, we do as much work at the schools as they're willing to listen.
00:19:28.240 --> 00:19:31.839
You know, not all schools are open to having the conversation.
00:19:31.839 --> 00:19:37.599
But, you know, I was there Bloomfield Hills High School, you know, and I talked to the girls about it.
00:19:37.599 --> 00:19:48.960
And the next year when I came back, one girl said, you know, I when I went home, my mom and I were talking, and we noticed that lives right in the heart of Bloomfield Hills, right down the street from where they live.
00:19:48.960 --> 00:19:58.799
There was like abnormal activity at a house, like during the day, you know, it's a neighborhood, and there was a lot of people coming and going.
00:19:58.799 --> 00:20:04.880
And she said, So my mom said, you know, called um the hotline.
00:20:04.880 --> 00:20:09.039
And anyways, it was a trafficking house in the heart of Bluefield Hills.
00:20:09.039 --> 00:20:11.279
So I mean, it's supply and demand.
00:20:11.279 --> 00:20:13.519
If the demand is there, the supply will appear.
00:20:13.519 --> 00:20:15.920
So it's all about money and greed.
00:20:15.920 --> 00:20:24.240
So that's why, you know, this is a great uh community um opportunity that you're offering us for education.
00:20:24.240 --> 00:20:28.559
It's not, you know, and you know, people say, Oh, it's in Detroit or Pontiac.
00:20:28.559 --> 00:20:31.839
Well, yeah, it is, but it's also everywhere else, you know.
00:20:32.160 --> 00:20:38.160
So do you network with other similar safe houses around the country?
00:20:38.400 --> 00:20:59.359
Yes, we have a because there's so few services, we have a very strong network within the state and across the country because we often get calls from all over the country because there's so few services, especially long-term, because you can imagine the mental and physical abuse that these you know victims go through.
00:20:59.359 --> 00:21:06.640
And three months isn't gonna, you know, make a dent in it or give them the confidence to live a productive life.
00:21:06.640 --> 00:21:12.799
So um we get calls and we're we're one of the referrals on the national hotline.
00:21:12.799 --> 00:21:19.599
So the few services in the country we we're all you know connected and we do mutual referrals.
00:21:19.599 --> 00:21:22.160
We get a lot of women coming from across the country.
00:21:22.160 --> 00:21:26.480
We have one coming in um next week, I think from Tennessee.
00:21:26.480 --> 00:21:32.000
We we have them from Charleston, Texas, Georgia, Oregon, because there's so few services.
00:21:32.000 --> 00:21:37.359
And sometimes they need to get away from their geographical location for safety.
00:21:37.359 --> 00:21:46.559
And then sometimes women that contact us from you know, Michigan feel that it's better for them to leave the state to really be safe.
00:21:46.559 --> 00:21:51.119
So yeah, we have partners, you know, within the state and across the country.
00:21:51.359 --> 00:22:02.720
So, Karen, when you tell me that trafficking is a $150 billion industry, and you are Helping disrupt that industry.
00:22:02.720 --> 00:22:06.960
I imagine that there are a lot of people that are not happy with you.
00:22:06.960 --> 00:22:13.759
How do you keep yourself and the safe house and your women safe?
00:22:14.000 --> 00:22:16.640
Well, safety is our number one priority.
00:22:16.640 --> 00:22:19.039
So we have very good safety protocols.
00:22:19.039 --> 00:22:27.279
We don't disclose the location of the house, the mailing off the mailing address where mail comes and goes is at a in a different city.
00:22:27.279 --> 00:22:28.000
It's in Novi.
00:22:28.000 --> 00:22:31.599
And it just it's a um place where I can pick up the mail.
00:22:31.599 --> 00:22:34.480
It's an American near where I live.
00:22:34.480 --> 00:22:37.440
And we have cameras around the house.
00:22:37.440 --> 00:22:39.759
And you know, we're just very cautious.
00:22:39.759 --> 00:22:46.799
And they, you know, the women there um are protective of each other and uh they take care of each other.
00:22:46.799 --> 00:22:49.359
So knock on wood, almost nine years.
00:22:49.359 --> 00:22:50.559
We've never been breached.
00:22:50.720 --> 00:22:51.359
That is amazing.
00:22:51.759 --> 00:22:59.200
For all the women that have not continued on the program, they might have come for a week or two and felt, you know, they weren't ready for this.
00:22:59.200 --> 00:23:00.640
It's hard work, you know.
00:23:00.640 --> 00:23:03.359
Um, they leave, but we've never been approached.
00:23:03.359 --> 00:23:08.240
And we have a great um relationship with a local law enforcement, county law enforcement.
00:23:08.240 --> 00:23:10.319
So we've got panic buttons.
00:23:10.319 --> 00:23:15.200
Um, so um we're it's just uh top priority for safety of the women.
00:23:15.519 --> 00:23:22.160
Well, that is a wonderful thing to hear that you've never been breached, and I hope it stays that way for everyone concerned.
00:23:22.160 --> 00:23:39.359
And it sounds like your experience as an executive and a leader at Ford, and then your first nonprofit, all of all of these skills that you learned along the way have really served you well for Sanctum House.
00:23:39.599 --> 00:23:47.839
I'll tell you uh so many times, and in this uh the challenging, especially the challenging business we're environment we're in right now.
00:23:47.839 --> 00:23:53.839
I'm just so grateful for Ford Motor Company for you know the executive and leadership training I had.
00:23:53.839 --> 00:23:55.200
I learned how to run a business.
00:23:55.200 --> 00:23:57.599
I got had great education, I had great parents.
00:23:57.599 --> 00:24:21.039
I mean, I'm I'm one of the fortunate ones, you know, which is uh great, but now I feel smaller because it's those, you know, it's it's my mission in life now to take those opportunities, all the education, the skills I've learned to help others, and every single woman that walks through those doors is, you know, a blessing, you know.
00:24:21.359 --> 00:24:31.119
Now I kind of feel like my little podcast, we could talk for hours about this, and yet most people don't want to listen to hours on a podcast.
00:24:31.119 --> 00:24:42.319
So, what are some ways that people listening can get to know more about Sanctum House, about the trafficking world, and ways they can help?
00:24:42.559 --> 00:24:44.640
Well, we have an annual gala first.
00:24:44.640 --> 00:24:53.200
Uh first of all, uh this ongoing community education is absolutely critical because you reach little pockets, big pockets.
00:24:53.200 --> 00:24:58.319
You're reaching the people that you know might know or see something.
00:24:58.319 --> 00:25:07.440
Uh, but one of the really important parts of our outreach to the community is our annual gala, which is Wings of Courage.
00:25:07.440 --> 00:25:13.920
And we're really fortunate to be able to have it at the Detroit Zoo this year.
00:25:13.920 --> 00:25:15.920
They're a partner of ours.
00:25:15.920 --> 00:25:21.680
Um, they actually do a private event for all our residents once a year.
00:25:21.680 --> 00:25:23.680
Um, private tour of the zoo.
00:25:23.680 --> 00:25:27.279
Once it's closed, our residents, our staff, our volunteers.
00:25:27.279 --> 00:25:35.200
Um, now they've opened up their hall right outside the butterfly exhibit where we're able to host our annual gala.
00:25:35.200 --> 00:25:47.200
And the beauty of it is the symbolism of the butterfly, starting as a caterpillar and growing and spreading your wings and flying off.
00:25:47.200 --> 00:25:53.119
So, um, and that was, you know, many years ago when we named it Wings of Courage.
00:25:53.119 --> 00:25:58.880
And with the partnership with the Detroit Zoo, um, it's just it's a beautiful thing.
00:25:58.880 --> 00:26:03.680
And it's October 22nd for anyone that may be interested.
00:26:03.680 --> 00:26:06.160
It's going to be a wonderful evening.
00:26:06.160 --> 00:26:12.160
It's a Thursday, and all the information is on our website, sanctumhouse.org.
00:26:12.160 --> 00:26:18.240
And come and it's going to be fun, but it's also going to be educational.
00:26:18.240 --> 00:26:32.559
Many of our former residents will come and talk about their journey, what Sanctum House has meant to them, and for all those others, you know, um, people that we will serve in the upcoming years.
00:26:32.559 --> 00:26:38.960
And because it's at the zoo, we have a um maximum amount that we'll be able to invite.
00:26:38.960 --> 00:26:43.759
So we encourage people to, you know, make their reservations and come.
00:26:43.759 --> 00:26:46.480
And also the opportunity to sponsor.
00:26:46.480 --> 00:26:55.839
We have companies and corporations that want to sponsor to see their name up there to, you know, to show that they are supporting the fight against human trafficking.
00:26:55.839 --> 00:27:11.759
So there's opportunities for sponsorship and opportunities to come and learn, and the whole team, our team will be there to meet everyone and welcome them, and also, you know, um share the stories and education of what we do.
00:27:12.000 --> 00:27:16.079
And then I think you have some local events as well.
00:27:16.319 --> 00:27:18.720
Yes, and you can always check our website.
00:27:18.720 --> 00:27:24.960
Uh, we do one of the uh it's a fun thing is craft nights um at different local churches.
00:27:24.960 --> 00:27:31.519
Um, you know, we have crafters that, you know, people come together and it's $40.
00:27:31.519 --> 00:27:35.680
So it's, you know, it's doable for uh within a budget.
00:27:35.680 --> 00:27:39.119
We have some of our existing residents come and talk.
00:27:39.119 --> 00:27:42.000
Every cent helps them, you know, with their journey.
00:27:42.000 --> 00:27:45.599
And it's fun and make a craft and you get to keep your craft.
00:27:45.599 --> 00:27:47.680
We provide, you know, refreshments.
00:27:47.680 --> 00:27:55.759
And that's on our website too, or Jen Moscow, who's on here, our marketing ambassador.
00:27:55.759 --> 00:27:58.720
She is the lead on organizing those.
00:27:58.720 --> 00:28:06.319
We have one scheduled in September, I think 23rd, and then one in uh November and some next year.
00:28:06.319 --> 00:28:16.720
But if there's any church or organization that would like to host one, uh we come well prepared with the crafter and all the, you know, the supplies, and uh they're a lot of fun.
00:28:16.720 --> 00:28:18.240
We have a a big following.
00:28:18.240 --> 00:28:23.119
We start when we started, they were like eight or 10 at a time.
00:28:23.119 --> 00:28:24.799
Now we're up to 50.
00:28:24.799 --> 00:28:38.000
You know, we have to sometimes cap them off, but you know, they're fun and they get to meet our team and meet some of the women that come, you know, that are actually going through their program and they say, you know, thank you.
00:28:38.000 --> 00:28:40.319
This is helps us, you know.
00:28:40.319 --> 00:28:43.519
Um, the education helps those that come behind us.
00:28:43.599 --> 00:28:44.799
So absolutely.
00:28:44.799 --> 00:28:50.400
So it's time for our lightning round, and this is just a chance for people to get to know you a little bit.
00:28:50.400 --> 00:28:52.240
Are you a coffee or a tea drinker?
00:28:52.559 --> 00:28:52.960
Coffee.
00:28:53.119 --> 00:28:55.519
All right, early bird or night owl.
00:28:55.920 --> 00:28:57.920
Neither I like my sleep.
00:28:58.720 --> 00:29:00.559
All right, I like that answer.
00:29:00.559 --> 00:29:04.000
Do you have a tool or an app that helps you run your nonprofit?
00:29:04.799 --> 00:29:07.759
No, just our souls and their their compassion.
00:29:08.000 --> 00:29:08.319
Okay.
00:29:08.319 --> 00:29:11.519
Do you have a favorite way to unwind after a busy day?
00:29:11.759 --> 00:29:13.839
Physical exercise every single day.
00:29:14.079 --> 00:29:19.759
And do you have another female founded nonprofit that you would like to give a shout out to?
00:29:20.000 --> 00:29:23.119
Oh, um, well, we have so many partners.
00:29:23.119 --> 00:29:48.160
Um, that some of our key partners of Trinity Health, that's a large organization, but also Open Arms, which is a uh subset of Henry Ford and Ascension um program that um supports outreach onto the streets, Avalon Healing Services in downtown Detroit that does outreach onto the streets, common ground in Oakland County that does outreach onto the streets.
00:29:48.160 --> 00:29:52.559
This is uh this is um a crime that we can't do it alone.
00:29:52.559 --> 00:30:02.799
So we do the long-term residential, wrong, long-term recovery part, but we don't do the street outreach and the emergency pickup, but we have a partners that do it.
00:30:02.799 --> 00:30:06.640
That's you know, open arms, it's you know, Avalon Healing Services.
00:30:06.640 --> 00:30:08.960
We all collaborate together.
00:30:09.200 --> 00:30:17.440
Well, audience, remember you can follow Karen and Sanctum House on Facebook and Instagram, and of course their website, sanctumhouse.org.
00:30:17.440 --> 00:30:23.440
We are actually going to turn this into a two-part episode because there's just so much information.
00:30:23.440 --> 00:30:30.640
So make sure you come back tomorrow and you can hear the rest of our conversation as Karen and I wrap things up.
00:30:30.640 --> 00:30:39.279
I'll be sure to put everything in the show notes and we'll also put some resources there as well in case you know anyone that needs some help.
00:30:39.279 --> 00:30:41.599
Karen, thank you so much for joining us today.
00:30:41.599 --> 00:30:44.720
I really appreciate your time and your conversation in your heart.
00:30:44.960 --> 00:30:45.359
Thank you.
00:30:45.359 --> 00:30:46.240
Thank you, Jenny.
00:30:46.480 --> 00:30:48.000
Audience, thank you for listening today.
00:30:48.000 --> 00:30:54.559
If you'd like to know what we discuss in part two, come on back tomorrow and it'll be on the podcast page.
