Matthew Farwell was a Stoughton detective when Sandra Birchmore died, and the FBI didn't arrest him until August 28, 2024. On June 24, prosecutors allege, he wrote a goodbye on his phone to his best friend.
That was the date news broke of a homicide finding from the pathologist her family had hired. Prosecutors cited the goodbye when they fought to keep him locked up before trial, yet even they concede he never fled.
The state accuses him of strangling Sandra and staging her death to look like suicide. His defense says she took her life when he broke it off, and he's pleaded not guilty.
Retired FBI agent Robin Dreeke, who ran the Bureau's counterintelligence behavioral program, joins me with defense attorney and onetime prosecutor Eric Faddis. How do you tell a man lying about an affair from one lying about a murder? Drop your answer in the comments.
