So we got a bowler in the house today, y'all.
00:04:08.639 --> 00:04:12.240
You know, the Bible says to give honor, to whom honor is due.
00:04:12.400 --> 00:04:14.159
My very special guest is Dr.
00:04:14.319 --> 00:04:14.960
David M.
00:04:15.120 --> 00:04:15.840
Walker.
00:04:16.000 --> 00:04:38.160
He's a leadership speaker, educator, minister, and the the leadership referee, which is a brand born from 25 years officiating the NCAA Division I basketball and a lifetime of developing leaders who lead without waiting for a title, a position, or permission.
00:04:38.319 --> 00:04:46.079
He is known for his powerful intersection, I'm gonna say merging of sports, education, and faith.
00:04:46.240 --> 00:05:01.839
And he's gonna share with us some of the wisdom that he's drawn from the basketball court, from the classroom and from the pulpit to give us some strategies, some how-tos that's gonna help us to move forward.
00:05:02.000 --> 00:05:13.839
Like I said, he has 25 years officiating in CAA Division I basketball, three decades of education, ministry, and leadership is so much more than I could say.
00:05:14.079 --> 00:05:22.399
He's the author of two books, and we're gonna be talking about um how do you develop a champion's mindset?
00:05:22.639 --> 00:05:23.920
Anyone interested?
00:05:24.160 --> 00:05:26.079
What about leadership?
00:05:26.399 --> 00:05:33.439
And what can you do uh during times like these to connect with God and our spirit?
00:05:33.600 --> 00:05:35.279
So we are blessed today.
00:05:35.439 --> 00:05:36.079
Uh, Dr.
00:05:36.160 --> 00:05:36.720
David M.
00:05:36.959 --> 00:05:41.120
Walker, welcome to the Divine Manifestation Pathway Podcast.
00:05:41.199 --> 00:05:42.399
How are you doing?
00:05:42.800 --> 00:05:47.439
Well, Constance, I am super excited about being on your show today.
00:05:47.600 --> 00:05:55.120
And of course, when I was listening to you, uh welcome all of your partners in and your audience from all over the world.
00:05:55.199 --> 00:05:58.240
I heard Australia, I heard Africa.
00:05:58.560 --> 00:05:59.519
Uh instantly.
00:05:59.680 --> 00:06:09.040
Now I've been in the Lord a long time, but instantly, uh, one of my favorite groups, the OJs, came to my mind where they had that song that we on the love train.
00:06:09.920 --> 00:06:11.600
All over the world, going around the world.
00:06:11.759 --> 00:06:12.720
We're on the love train.
00:06:12.800 --> 00:06:17.519
So I feel like I'm on the love train this morning uh with you and your audience.
00:06:17.920 --> 00:06:20.560
Well, wow, we're just gonna get right to it.
00:06:20.720 --> 00:06:22.879
You what a remarkable life.
00:06:23.040 --> 00:06:25.680
I know everything hasn't been perfect.
00:06:26.000 --> 00:06:29.519
What major accomplishments?
00:06:29.759 --> 00:06:34.639
Uh, before I ask my hundreds of questions, tell listeners a little bit more.
00:06:34.800 --> 00:06:41.360
What would surprise listeners about you, about your life and stuff that you've come through?
00:06:41.839 --> 00:06:49.600
Yeah, well, I, you know, when you talk about tell us about your life, I always got to start uh from where I came from.
00:06:49.759 --> 00:06:53.519
You know, I grew up in a place that many of your listeners may know about.
00:06:53.600 --> 00:06:56.800
It's a place called Bedsty in Brooklyn, New York.
00:06:57.519 --> 00:07:06.000
And for anyone who's never heard of Bedsty Brooklyn, it's the home of Biggie and Jay-Z and Chris Rock and Lenny Kravis, Shirley Chisholm.
00:07:06.079 --> 00:07:10.079
There's a whole lot of legendary people who came from Bedsty, Brooklyn.
00:07:10.240 --> 00:07:12.959
And uh Bedsty had a tagline, Constance.
00:07:13.040 --> 00:07:16.720
The tagline was known as Bed Sky Do a Die.
00:07:17.040 --> 00:07:17.680
Yeah, Bedsty.
00:07:18.240 --> 00:07:18.959
I didn't know that.
00:07:19.199 --> 00:07:20.319
Oh yeah, oh yeah.
00:07:20.480 --> 00:07:24.240
And literally what it meant was either you do it or you what?
00:07:24.399 --> 00:07:24.879
You die.
00:07:25.600 --> 00:07:31.759
That was the option that those of us who grew up in Bedsty, Brooklyn, either you do it or you die.
00:07:31.920 --> 00:07:39.680
So, of course, that gave all of us, especially those names that I mentioned, uh uh uh, you know, the energy to say, hey, I can't die.
00:07:39.759 --> 00:07:44.800
I gotta get up, I gotta do something, I gotta find out what's better in life for me.
00:07:44.959 --> 00:07:48.079
And of course, those names that I mentioned, they've done great things.
00:07:48.240 --> 00:07:50.480
And of course, you have to find your own lane.
00:07:50.560 --> 00:07:55.439
You can't follow what Biggie did, you can't follow what Shirley Chisholm did or Lenny Kravis.
00:07:55.519 --> 00:07:58.480
You gotta find your own lane and become your old champion.
00:07:58.639 --> 00:08:04.480
And so, all the things that you mentioned uh in my bio, that's the things that I set out to do.
00:08:04.560 --> 00:08:07.360
But I am a product of Bed Sty, do a die.
00:08:08.079 --> 00:08:09.040
So interesting.
00:08:09.120 --> 00:08:11.600
I never heard that term before.
00:08:12.079 --> 00:08:12.800
Well, you know, Dr.
00:08:12.959 --> 00:08:16.560
Walker, we're living in such interesting times.
00:08:17.360 --> 00:08:19.439
Some people say unprecedented.
00:08:19.519 --> 00:08:23.040
I'm so tired of hearing that word times globally.
00:08:23.439 --> 00:08:30.879
Yes, and one of your books and and and one insight that God has given you is the champion mindset.
00:08:31.279 --> 00:08:42.080
So during times like these, what would you share with people about how do you have the champion mindset?
00:08:42.320 --> 00:08:49.440
And because you were a referee uh for all of those years, yes, I was.
00:08:49.679 --> 00:08:53.600
You know, you were you were calling the game for winners.
00:08:54.080 --> 00:08:56.480
So, what can people do?
00:08:56.720 --> 00:08:58.799
How can they deal with fear?
00:08:58.960 --> 00:09:05.039
How can they deal with all the stuff that's going on in order to kind of get that champion mindset going?
00:09:05.519 --> 00:09:08.960
Yeah, you know, and as you mentioned, I did write a book.
00:09:09.120 --> 00:09:13.759
Um, the audience can see it, see it there in the in the background, The Champion's Mind.
00:09:13.919 --> 00:09:20.720
Uh, the title of the book is The Champion's Mind, uh How to Defeat Giants and Win.
00:09:21.039 --> 00:09:22.720
Ooh, yeah, yeah.
00:09:22.799 --> 00:09:23.440
Let me say it again.
00:09:23.600 --> 00:09:28.080
The Champion's Mind, How to Defeat Giants and Win.
00:09:28.559 --> 00:09:33.360
And that book was really birthed out of my own uh uh journey.
00:09:33.600 --> 00:09:39.440
You know, when I was born in March of 1960, there were no sonograms, no gender reveal parties.
00:09:39.600 --> 00:09:44.000
My mother was expecting me, uh, but she didn't know my gender.
00:09:44.240 --> 00:09:48.720
And her and my dad said, Well, if it's a boy, we're gonna name him Michael.
00:09:49.039 --> 00:09:57.919
Uh when my mother came to her mother, my grandma Martha, and said, Ma, if I have a son, we've decided to name him Michael.
00:09:58.080 --> 00:10:05.519
But after my grandma Martha heard that news, she looked my mother directly in her eye, and this is what she said, his name is David.
00:10:06.799 --> 00:10:17.440
Then she said, Because in the Bible, David was a king, David killed Goliath, and David was a great man, and my grandson will be named David, and he will be a great man.
00:10:17.679 --> 00:10:24.080
So all of my life I've lived in the in the in the reflection and the embodiment of the biblical character, David.
00:10:24.159 --> 00:10:28.480
And of course, everybody knows David was a giant slayer, he killed Goliath.
00:10:28.879 --> 00:10:39.840
But what I discovered that David was greater than just that one act, and I found out that David had six principles, six leadership principles about him.
00:10:40.080 --> 00:10:48.240
And I took those principles, and that's why I put it in this book, The Champion's Mind, to teach people how to become a leader.
00:10:48.399 --> 00:10:57.440
Now, I won't go through all six chapters, but you mentioned uh fear, and as I'm reminded, chapter two talks about being fearless.
00:10:57.759 --> 00:11:04.480
Because in this journey, um, you know, when you set out to do something, you got faith, right?
00:11:04.559 --> 00:11:04.960
We understand.
00:11:05.120 --> 00:11:13.679
I'm not talking about religious faith, I'm talking about faith to believe that you can, but I believe that life offers us two things.
00:11:13.840 --> 00:11:18.720
Number one, it offers us fear, I mean faith, and then it offers us fear.
00:11:18.879 --> 00:11:23.200
And I call faith and fear the fraternal twins of life, right?
00:11:23.279 --> 00:11:24.639
The fraternal twins.
00:11:24.799 --> 00:11:29.519
In other words, they look something alike and they appear approximately at the same time.
00:11:29.679 --> 00:11:35.039
So, so whenever you launch out on something by faith, which I call the elder brother, it comes first.
00:11:35.120 --> 00:11:39.200
Your faith comes first, your faith to believe, your faith to do something great.
00:11:39.360 --> 00:11:45.919
But look up, no, no, no, just as soon as your faith gets in operation, here comes the twin fear.
00:11:46.559 --> 00:11:50.240
And people have to understand that they go hand in hand.
00:11:50.399 --> 00:11:53.279
There is no success without faith and fear.
00:11:53.440 --> 00:11:56.960
The question is, which one are you going to listen to?
00:11:57.200 --> 00:12:03.679
You know, it was Nelson Mandela who said that courage is not the absence of fear, but that I triumph over it.
00:12:03.840 --> 00:12:08.879
So when that fear comes, and the title of the second chapter is just be fearless.
00:12:09.200 --> 00:12:25.919
Know that you have the ability, know that you have the talent, know that you have the God-given insight to do whatever it is, but you must accept fear is gonna show up either before you start the project or after you get out there in the deep waters, like it did with Peter.
00:12:26.080 --> 00:12:27.120
It's gonna show up.
00:12:27.200 --> 00:12:30.879
But the question is, what will you do to overcome that fear?
00:12:31.120 --> 00:12:34.080
You got to trust in the faith and you got to trust in God.
00:12:34.480 --> 00:12:36.080
So, so Dr.
00:12:36.240 --> 00:12:38.240
Walker, can we be fearless?
00:12:38.480 --> 00:12:39.759
Can we choose?
00:12:40.159 --> 00:12:49.759
Can we choose to I'm gonna make a decision, even though I just got downsides from my job, I'm gonna be fearless.
00:12:49.840 --> 00:12:50.799
What would that look like?
00:12:50.960 --> 00:12:52.240
Unpack that for us.
00:12:52.480 --> 00:12:53.039
Yeah.
00:12:53.679 --> 00:12:57.840
Number one, accepting that, let's say the person who loses their job.
00:12:58.000 --> 00:13:07.120
Okay, it is unquestionable that the next thing that comes up is confusion and fear of what's next, right?
00:13:08.080 --> 00:13:20.399
But you will always overcome every fear that you have with one thing, and that's making a decision that you will not allow the fear to get the best of you.
00:13:20.639 --> 00:13:25.759
If you say, Yes, I lost my job, I don't know what tomorrow's gonna bring.
00:13:25.840 --> 00:13:27.519
There's so many unknowns.
00:13:27.919 --> 00:13:29.360
Fear has set in.
00:13:29.519 --> 00:13:33.840
But if I tell that fear, number one, acknowledge fear, don't be afraid of it.
00:13:33.919 --> 00:13:35.840
Don't some people say, I don't have no fear.
00:13:35.919 --> 00:13:36.879
I don't believe that.
00:13:37.039 --> 00:13:39.600
I believe everybody has fear, right?
00:13:39.840 --> 00:13:46.720
Um, um, some people say that uh uh there's an acronym that says fear, false evidence appearing real.
00:13:46.799 --> 00:13:47.759
I don't know whether you heard that.
00:13:47.840 --> 00:13:59.759
Some people heard that false evidence appearing real, but I say that if if fear was not real, Jesus would never have told the disciples to fear not, but he did.
00:14:00.000 --> 00:14:06.799
He told them fear is real, just don't be afraid, don't let it stop you, just have belief.
00:14:06.879 --> 00:14:24.320
So for anyone that's going through anything in life, yes, we acknowledge that fear is real, fear is going to show up, but I have the faith to overcome any fear that shows up in my life because as the scripture said, greater is he that is in me than he that is in the world.
00:14:24.639 --> 00:14:33.759
So, you know, um, for my international listeners, if you don't know who the new new uh New York Knicks are, you need to Google them.
00:14:33.840 --> 00:14:37.200
I think that they had not won a championship in how many?
00:14:37.600 --> 00:14:56.879
I think it might be 50 plus years, 50 plus years, but they uh they really accomplished just a powerful uh victory, yes, but they had to come back from behind, they were like the underdogs, nobody believed in them.
00:14:57.120 --> 00:15:02.720
So, so what would you say to people who feel like, wow, I I need to make a comeback?
00:15:03.120 --> 00:15:05.840
Uh, how how am I gonna be victorious?
00:15:06.000 --> 00:15:08.879
And you know that mindset from being on the court.
00:15:08.960 --> 00:15:12.559
Yeah, what would that look like for somebody in everyday life?
00:15:12.879 --> 00:15:19.759
Yeah, well, the New York Knicks are perfect examples of what it takes to become a champion.
00:15:20.720 --> 00:15:31.039
You you literally said that they were behind every game, and they were seven games, they were behind, and I think it was game number four, they were behind at least by 29 points.
00:15:31.200 --> 00:15:35.759
Yeah, but they found a way to come back and win the game.
00:15:35.919 --> 00:15:36.559
Here's why.
00:15:36.720 --> 00:15:46.559
Number one, when the pressure was on, they allowed themselves to become relaxed, they allowed themselves to say, I will not fear.
00:15:46.720 --> 00:15:47.600
And guess what?
00:15:47.759 --> 00:15:53.279
They allowed themselves to say, we are good enough to come back from this deficit.
00:15:53.600 --> 00:15:56.000
See, the mindset is where we win.
00:15:56.159 --> 00:15:57.360
We win in the mind.
00:15:57.600 --> 00:16:10.000
If the you know, uh uh uh uh if the mind tells you, that's why scripture said, let this mind be in you that was also in Christ, Christ had a mind that would not allow the opposition to get the best of him.
00:16:10.159 --> 00:16:17.039
And so when you're down, when you're when you're an underdog, I might be an underdog, but I can still win.
00:16:17.200 --> 00:16:19.039
But I gotta believe it first.
00:16:19.279 --> 00:16:21.759
Um, David, again, was a giant slayer.
00:16:21.840 --> 00:16:23.600
Why did he defeat the giant?
00:16:23.679 --> 00:16:25.039
Because he believed that he could.
00:16:25.200 --> 00:16:30.639
When other people around him said, we can't defeat the giant because he's too big, he's too strong.
00:16:30.879 --> 00:16:35.919
David, that shepherd boy said, Hey, God has given you into my hands today.
00:16:36.080 --> 00:16:38.240
And that's what people in this audience need to say.
00:16:38.320 --> 00:16:47.600
Whatever it is that you're going for, your goals, your dreams, you have to say, God has given it to me today, and I'm gonna have it.
00:16:48.559 --> 00:16:54.559
So I heard you talk about gifts online that God has given us gifts and talents.
00:16:54.639 --> 00:17:15.119
And so somebody who may uh uh want to get in that whole entrepreneur vibe or go online and be a podcaster or a creator, how can our God given gifts or talents or or even educational credentials?
00:17:15.200 --> 00:17:23.920
How can we take that and market it for money, serve humanity first, but then um also receive money for that?
00:17:24.079 --> 00:17:32.079
Because I told somebody I was interviewing you today, and they were like, asking him about ask him about how can I bring more money into my life.
00:17:32.160 --> 00:17:33.680
So that's my question to you.
00:17:33.920 --> 00:17:36.240
Can we use our gifts and talents?
00:17:36.319 --> 00:17:37.599
How do we know what they are?
00:17:37.759 --> 00:17:38.960
All of the above.
00:17:40.000 --> 00:17:45.680
So if I can be honest, our gifts, and and we all have a gift.
00:17:45.920 --> 00:17:51.599
God has given every single one of us a gift, and he gave it to us at birth.
00:17:52.400 --> 00:17:58.480
And so many people are trying to do what I say, they're trying to discover their gift, right?
00:17:59.279 --> 00:18:06.079
I I don't believe we should discover a gift because when you're trying to discover who you are, a lot of people say, I'm trying to discover.
00:18:06.400 --> 00:18:14.720
I believe that when you're trying to discover your gift, you are looking outside of yourself, you're looking that way, you're looking for it somewhere else.
00:18:14.799 --> 00:18:16.160
You're trying to go and discover.
00:18:16.319 --> 00:18:20.240
Similar to uh, you know, they say Christopher Columbus discovered America.
00:18:20.319 --> 00:18:21.759
That's how the history book said.
00:18:22.160 --> 00:18:29.680
But the truth is, uh Columbus landed in a whole lot of Caribbean islands, and when he got there, he asked, Is this America?
00:18:29.920 --> 00:18:32.160
Because he was trying to discover it.
00:18:32.319 --> 00:18:37.119
And when you try to discover your gift, you're gonna land in places where you shouldn't be.
00:18:37.359 --> 00:18:43.920
But I believe that God wants us to discern our gifts, and when you are discerning it, where are you looking?
00:18:44.079 --> 00:18:47.039
You're looking inside because that's where your gift is.
00:18:47.119 --> 00:18:49.759
Your gift is not outside of you, your gift is in you.
00:18:50.000 --> 00:18:57.279
He has given all of us the same gift, and I just wanted to kind of just a little something from James 1 and 7.
00:18:57.440 --> 00:19:05.039
He says that uh uh good and perfect gifts come down to us from God, that's where we get those gifts from, and they're on the inside.
00:19:05.279 --> 00:19:10.799
Paul said um that that uh he wished that we all would have a gift like him.
00:19:11.119 --> 00:19:21.119
That's what he said, but then he realized that we all have our own gift, and and when you translate that word gift is translated into the word genius.
00:19:21.440 --> 00:19:29.599
See, your gift is your genius, and no one else has your genius, and you gotta put that genius in operation.
00:19:29.839 --> 00:19:36.400
Um, um, and it's like you know, there are two things that are never identical.
00:19:36.720 --> 00:19:46.640
One is a snowflake, no two snowflakes are ever exactly alike, and the other thing that's uh doesn't have a uh an equal is your fingerprint.
00:19:46.720 --> 00:19:51.759
There's no two fingerprints exactly alike, and I want to add one more thing to that your gift.
00:19:52.079 --> 00:19:56.160
No one has your gift, and you got to put your gift out there.
00:19:56.240 --> 00:20:00.480
Now, I want to make clear on this because you asked me, can our gifts get us money?
00:20:00.559 --> 00:20:04.000
Um that was the question that the my listener sent to me.
00:20:04.240 --> 00:20:04.640
Yes.
00:20:05.039 --> 00:20:16.640
And and here's the answer it can, if you use it correctly, but you also still have to understand how money operates.
00:20:17.039 --> 00:20:18.799
How does money operate?
00:20:19.039 --> 00:20:20.720
Okay, money, all right.
00:20:20.799 --> 00:20:24.480
Remember, money is uh a currency, right?
00:20:24.640 --> 00:20:26.240
We know that that is currency.
00:20:26.480 --> 00:20:30.079
In other words, it's designed, it's designed to circulate.
00:20:30.400 --> 00:20:35.519
Um, the wealthy understand money better than the middle class and the poor.
00:20:35.680 --> 00:20:43.599
What the wealthy understand is that money's main objective is to make more money, it's to have babies, right?
00:20:44.000 --> 00:20:48.799
Uh you can have money, but at the end of the month, you don't have no more money.
00:20:48.960 --> 00:20:49.200
Why?
00:20:49.359 --> 00:20:51.440
Because your money hasn't made any babies.
00:20:51.680 --> 00:20:55.839
And and you're just trying to make money to pay bills and to survive.
00:20:56.079 --> 00:20:58.160
But that's not how you're gonna get real money.
00:20:58.319 --> 00:21:04.400
Real money is supposed to be circulated, real money is supposed to be invested, it's supposed to create babies.
00:21:04.559 --> 00:21:08.960
So I can have a gift that's designed to make me money.
00:21:09.119 --> 00:21:16.480
I can use my gift to make money, but if I still don't understand how money works, I won't get the money that I need.
00:21:16.559 --> 00:21:17.680
So you have to have both.
00:21:17.839 --> 00:21:24.640
A gift will will get you in position to make the money, but you have to understand how money flows, how money operates.
00:21:24.799 --> 00:21:28.079
You want to make babies, and then somebody always said this.
00:21:28.240 --> 00:21:32.880
They said, if money knows you don't like it, it won't show up for you.
00:21:33.200 --> 00:21:34.559
Oh, that's good.
00:21:34.880 --> 00:21:36.000
It won't show up for you.
00:21:36.079 --> 00:21:39.920
You gotta make you gotta make friends with money, right?
00:21:40.000 --> 00:21:44.880
You gotta make a friend with money, and not as the scripture said, the love of money.
00:21:45.039 --> 00:21:47.839
We're not talking about that because that's dangerous.
00:21:48.079 --> 00:21:50.880
Uh, but it's okay to love to have money.
00:21:52.000 --> 00:21:56.240
You know, Les Brown said something so funny.
00:21:56.480 --> 00:21:59.599
Les said, you know, everybody said that money ain't that important.
00:22:00.160 --> 00:22:04.559
Important, but then he said, uh, I believe money is right up there with oxygen.
00:22:06.400 --> 00:22:07.200
Exactly.
00:22:07.920 --> 00:22:11.039
And again, if I could use the scripture, money solves all things.
00:22:11.200 --> 00:22:12.000
Yeah, right.
00:22:12.079 --> 00:22:13.039
It solves all things.
00:22:13.200 --> 00:22:25.359
Any problem you had technically, you know, and how many times you know, you you sit down and you there's something that you really want to do, you really want to do, and nine times out of ten, it's gonna take money to do it.
00:22:25.519 --> 00:22:25.920
Oh, yeah.
00:22:26.079 --> 00:22:31.759
And sometimes you look at that bank account and you say, Darn, you know, I don't have enough money for that.
00:22:31.839 --> 00:22:38.400
But what a wonderful thing to have enough money to do exactly whatever it is that you choose to do.
00:22:38.480 --> 00:22:39.519
That's a great feeling.
00:22:39.759 --> 00:22:40.319
Yeah.
00:22:40.559 --> 00:22:42.799
Well, let's get over into your wheel, House.
00:22:42.960 --> 00:22:52.079
You know, you are a leadership guru, and right now we need leadership in our families, in our organizations globally.
00:22:52.720 --> 00:23:02.079
Give listeners just some really powerful insight and revelation into what leadership is, what would that look like?
00:23:02.240 --> 00:23:05.440
What should people do if they are in a leadership position?
00:23:05.599 --> 00:23:08.559
What are some strategies you can give us?
00:23:08.880 --> 00:23:18.160
Yeah, you know, you you mentioned my referee career, yeah, yeah, for 25 years, and of course, I've had many other leadership roles.
00:23:18.319 --> 00:23:25.119
I was an educator in New York City schools for 30 years, a teacher, uh uh assist principal and principal.
00:23:25.519 --> 00:23:36.480
Um, then I was uh a pastor for 15 years, a senior pastor, did that for about 15 years, and then I officiate refereed for 25 years.
00:23:36.640 --> 00:23:40.000
Uh, and I and I want to ref uh reference the referend career.
00:23:40.079 --> 00:23:46.160
You know, every every night when I went out on the floor as a referee, I always had my whistle, right?
00:23:46.400 --> 00:23:48.640
Yeah, and that's before you get started.
00:23:48.880 --> 00:23:50.559
Isn't that a lot of pressure?
00:23:50.799 --> 00:24:04.079
Because you are you are making you're making decisions and determinations that's gonna influence a win, or so you went out with you know under that kind of pressure with your whistle.
00:24:04.160 --> 00:24:04.720
Go ahead.
00:24:04.960 --> 00:24:19.119
Yeah, um, yes, definitely a whole lot of pressure, and that's one of the reasons why I know about leadership because for those 25 years, I made leadership decisions under pressure, you know, and and you know, that spotlight is always on.
00:24:19.200 --> 00:24:23.440
And remember, you know, I didn't have anybody cheering me on every night.
00:24:23.599 --> 00:24:26.880
You know, the the players and the coaches, they got people cheering them on.
00:24:26.960 --> 00:24:27.839
Let's go, let's go.
00:24:28.000 --> 00:24:32.079
When when you're the referee, you know, they only got one word for you that's boo.
00:24:36.160 --> 00:24:37.359
Every decision you make.
00:24:37.440 --> 00:24:42.240
Can you imagine going to work every day and every decision you make, somebody criticize it?
00:24:42.559 --> 00:24:43.359
Lord Jesus.
00:24:43.519 --> 00:24:50.559
But anyway, what I was saying about my whistle is every night I went on out on that floor, that whistle told everyone that I was the leader.
00:24:50.880 --> 00:24:56.480
But I soon discovered that just because I am the leader, it doesn't make me a leader.
00:24:57.440 --> 00:25:10.880
And a lot of people believe, and this is what I talk about a lot in some of my uh keynote talks, I talk about leading without titles because people believe that they need a title, a position, uh, in order to be an effective leader.
00:25:11.039 --> 00:25:12.160
And I don't believe that.
00:25:12.319 --> 00:25:15.359
I believe that, you know, you don't have to have a title to lead.
00:25:15.440 --> 00:25:16.960
You don't have to have a permission to lead.
00:25:17.039 --> 00:25:24.480
All you need is initiative, all you need to see the issues and the problems within an organization and just fill the gaps as needed.
00:25:24.640 --> 00:25:30.240
So I talk about, you know, leading without titles, leading uh without without permission.
00:25:30.319 --> 00:25:37.039
But I have a saying, and I want to get it out here because a lot again, because a lot of people feel like, well, I need a title to lead.
00:25:37.200 --> 00:25:44.640
And I say that uh leadership is not the title you hold, but it's the presence that you carry.
00:25:45.039 --> 00:25:47.599
Whoa, say that again.
00:25:47.839 --> 00:25:53.680
Yeah, leadership is not the title you hold, it's the presence you carry.
00:25:54.319 --> 00:26:04.079
Because it's the presence that you have is what changes people, it was it what it's what changes the atmosphere, not your title.
00:26:04.160 --> 00:26:12.079
You know, some people have titles on the on the on the door, and sometimes people's influence is the title.
00:26:12.319 --> 00:26:16.160
People are gonna do what they do because they, you know, it says CEO on your door.
00:26:16.240 --> 00:26:26.480
But what happens if you did you didn't have a title, but you got people to you know to lead or to do whatever it is they were supposed to do based on your influence, and that's what real leadership is.
00:26:26.720 --> 00:26:28.000
You know, that's what leadership.
00:26:28.160 --> 00:26:35.680
Let me just quote uh John Maxwell, where he said, uh leadership is influence, nothing more and nothing less.
00:26:35.759 --> 00:26:36.960
It's about influence.
00:26:37.119 --> 00:26:39.519
Who are you influencing in your organization?
00:26:39.680 --> 00:26:43.119
Who are you influencing at your church, in your business?
00:26:43.279 --> 00:26:44.640
It's not about your title.
00:26:44.799 --> 00:26:55.599
Put that title aside and put your whistle aside, and that is how people are gonna know whether or not you're a real leader by the influence or the presence, because you definitely need presence.
00:26:55.920 --> 00:27:00.240
You mentioned John Maxwell, he teaches on servant leadership, right?
00:27:00.559 --> 00:27:02.960
Yeah, explain that to listeners.
00:27:03.119 --> 00:27:04.240
What does that mean?
00:27:04.559 --> 00:27:14.400
Yes, servant leadership is is sort of uh a brother, a sister to something that I'm going to talk about in a few minutes.
00:27:14.559 --> 00:27:29.200
Okay, because because that term servant leadership, what it actually means is that most leaders feel like it's their job to kind of stand on the mountain and let everybody else do the work.
00:27:30.079 --> 00:27:38.799
But when you are a servant leader, you understand that, like Jesus said, the greatest among us shall be the servant.
00:27:39.279 --> 00:27:41.599
So my title is CEO.
00:27:42.559 --> 00:27:50.640
But because I'm a servant leader, I'm willing to get amongst my employees and help with whatever needs to be done.
00:27:50.799 --> 00:27:58.400
I don't sit on my high horse, I don't sit on my throne or my crown, I don't sit in the big office, I get out amongst our people.
00:27:58.559 --> 00:28:05.759
If I could just talk about a principal we had in New York City, he never stayed in his office.
00:28:06.000 --> 00:28:10.240
Every day he was in the halls, he would visit classrooms.
00:28:10.480 --> 00:28:15.920
Um, and and and what he was doing was he was understanding that I gotta get out.
00:28:16.000 --> 00:28:17.680
I can't keep sitting in this office.
00:28:17.839 --> 00:28:35.440
So he would help people in the halls, help people in classrooms, and that's what a servant leader is: a person who has a high position, but yet they're they're willing to get down on their uh if I could use Jesus as a reference when he washed the disciples' feet, right?
00:28:35.839 --> 00:28:39.279
He didn't have to do that because he was king of king and lords of lords.
00:28:39.440 --> 00:28:45.039
But he came, as he said, to serve, not to be propped up as a king.
00:28:45.200 --> 00:28:52.720
He came to serve, and so that's what a servant leader is a person who's in leadership, but they're willing to serve among the people.
00:28:53.119 --> 00:28:57.599
You know, there's something powerful about serving, even in business.
00:28:57.759 --> 00:29:08.559
You know, they're saying now that when you serve people and give them an unforgettable experience, you always have a repeat customer.
00:29:08.880 --> 00:29:10.079
Absolutely true.
00:29:10.240 --> 00:29:21.039
And uh, of course, organizations like a Chick-fil-A, yeah, uh, I'll just use them, they are quintessential in terms of customer service.
00:29:21.519 --> 00:29:26.720
When when you walk in that place every time, it's always like, How can I help you?
00:29:26.880 --> 00:29:29.200
Thank you, ma'am, how can I serve you?
00:29:29.440 --> 00:29:30.880
All those kinds of things.
00:29:31.119 --> 00:29:38.079
And any organization, any church, that's why a good church is going to have uh what they call them at the doors, uh, greeters.
00:29:38.240 --> 00:29:39.200
Greeters, uh-huh.
00:29:39.440 --> 00:29:41.920
Yeah, talking to people, helping people out.
00:29:42.079 --> 00:29:44.640
When a person looks confused, give them directions.
00:29:44.799 --> 00:29:53.279
I'll never forget one time I went to a church, it was a church, the house of God, and I asked somebody, whether it was a man or woman, I can't remember.
00:29:53.440 --> 00:29:55.680
I said, uh, can you tell me where the bathroom is?
00:29:55.759 --> 00:29:59.599
And they pointed, say, say, go that way.
00:30:00.880 --> 00:30:05.759
And I and it was like, go that way around the corner, down the block, one of them numbers.
00:30:05.920 --> 00:30:10.960
And I thought, like, the greatest thing they could have said to me was, Oh, I'll show you where it is.
00:30:11.119 --> 00:30:17.680
Yeah, that would have been far more powerful than say, go down, make a right and then a left and da-da-da.
00:30:18.000 --> 00:30:20.480
Because it, you know, that's just not good customer service.
00:30:20.559 --> 00:30:28.720
So, whether it's your business, your organization, your church, you will succeed to the level of your customer service.
00:30:29.519 --> 00:30:31.279
That is so true.
00:30:31.519 --> 00:30:36.240
So, so so for people who are going through something right now, yeah.
00:30:36.480 --> 00:30:48.240
Everybody, you know, like I said earlier, job, the world changing, what used to be is not anymore, what you thought would be divorce.
00:30:48.799 --> 00:30:51.839
How can we bring faith in God in this?
00:30:51.920 --> 00:30:55.440
And I know a lot of my listeners say, Well, I don't believe in church.
00:30:55.519 --> 00:30:59.440
Well, we're talking about spirit, we're talking about whatever you believe in.
00:30:59.680 --> 00:31:12.079
So, how can people do in times like these connect with God and understand how they still can live an amazing life?
00:31:12.240 --> 00:31:13.599
What would that look like?
00:31:14.319 --> 00:31:22.000
Yeah, um, you know, as you ask that question, um, I'm gonna give you a personal testimony on this one.
00:31:23.119 --> 00:31:33.519
Um, I was married for 42 years, and about eight months ago, the divorce was final.
00:31:36.559 --> 00:31:54.400
And I don't know anyone else who can talk about being married for so many years and having a partner for a total of 45 years, and once you've been with anybody, especially that length of time, there's a synergy and a connection with a person.
00:31:55.039 --> 00:31:58.480
And then one day you wake up and it's over.
00:32:00.000 --> 00:32:06.480
And now you have all these questions, questions for yourself, and of course, questions for God.
00:32:06.799 --> 00:32:11.519
Yeah, and the number one question that everybody asks God when they go through something is why?
00:32:11.759 --> 00:32:13.039
Why did I go through this?
00:32:13.119 --> 00:32:14.160
What was it for?
00:32:14.319 --> 00:32:15.200
What did I do?
00:32:15.359 --> 00:32:20.480
Or or and especially when you spend so many times trying to do right.
00:32:20.640 --> 00:32:27.279
You know, when you talk about all those accolades, you know, and and in my personal life, I was a husband and a father.
00:32:27.440 --> 00:32:38.400
Now I'm a grandfather, an educator, and you're doing all those things right, but yet you still found yourself uh divorced with a person wanting to leave the marriage.
00:32:38.640 --> 00:32:40.799
And it was out of my control.
00:32:41.359 --> 00:32:45.119
And ultimately, and like you say, well, what do you do in those scenarios?
00:32:45.359 --> 00:32:52.400
Of course, you can get angry with God, uh, you can stop going to church, all those different things.
00:32:52.720 --> 00:33:01.599
But I've allowed God to be preeminent over my life and knowing that God oversees both the good and the bad.
00:33:02.720 --> 00:33:08.079
And it's not enough to serve God and worship God in the good.
00:33:09.519 --> 00:33:15.440
You also have to have a trust and the faith of God during the difficult times of life.
00:33:15.599 --> 00:33:28.880
When those things that happen that you cannot explain, you don't know the why, and now as a as a man who is married for 42 years and 66 years of age, what is my future like?
00:33:29.440 --> 00:33:31.680
What am I supposed to do next?
00:33:32.000 --> 00:33:38.240
And uh I've had some depressive days and some uh challenging days, like I have no idea.
00:33:38.400 --> 00:33:43.680
But here's what I here's what I will not do, no matter what I go through.
00:33:43.920 --> 00:33:48.079
I will not blame God and I will not leave God.
00:33:48.559 --> 00:33:54.720
And I'm gonna trust that God is with me like he has always been.
00:33:54.880 --> 00:34:04.319
I don't believe that in this moment he has left me in any, no matter what kind of confusing moments I have, um, but I know that God is there.
00:34:04.400 --> 00:34:12.960
So if I was gonna send a message to anyone today, especially after this personal experience, because for so many years as a pastor, I had to comfort other people.
00:34:13.119 --> 00:34:14.000
You know what I'm saying?
00:34:14.159 --> 00:34:27.679
I had to listen to people sit in front of me and talk about the issues that they were going through in their marriage, and now that same life issue or life tragedy fell at my door.
00:34:27.840 --> 00:34:31.519
And the question is, Pastor Dave, what are you gonna do with it now?
00:34:32.079 --> 00:34:40.000
Well, I'm gonna keep trusting, keep believing, keep holding on, and keep allowing my faith to help to cultivate me.
00:34:40.079 --> 00:34:45.119
And then, of course, asking God to guide me into whatever my life is in the future.
00:34:45.360 --> 00:34:49.360
But I told the devil, I will not go into the corner and die.
00:34:49.519 --> 00:34:54.400
I'm not doing that because either I only have, you know, going back to that bedstead, do or die.
00:34:54.480 --> 00:34:54.800
Guess what?
00:34:54.960 --> 00:34:56.320
Either I do or what?
00:34:56.880 --> 00:34:57.920
You die, yeah.
00:34:58.880 --> 00:34:59.679
You know what I'm saying?
00:34:59.920 --> 00:35:01.360
And we're not gonna let that happen.
00:35:01.440 --> 00:35:07.039
I don't know what the do is going to be going forward, but here's one thing I do know I'm not gonna die.
00:35:07.440 --> 00:35:08.000
Wow.
00:35:08.239 --> 00:35:12.639
Thank you for your vulnerability, thank you for your honesty.
00:35:12.800 --> 00:35:19.840
That's more important than any strategy, and especially coming from a male, a strong alpha male.
00:35:20.000 --> 00:35:38.320
You know, I I I tell as a therapist, I tell people, I said, I really feel for guys because somebody said there's a lot of silent desperation in men because the pressure that's on you guys to perform and to accomplish and to always be on top of things.
00:35:38.480 --> 00:35:58.239
But I also have a mentor who said, God loves to be with us in the perceived low, God loves to be with us and is with us, and for my other listeners, you know, spirit loves to be with us and is with us in the perceived low places of our lives.
00:35:58.639 --> 00:36:20.559
Yeah, that that's so good, and so for anyone who is going through anything, uh, your story is so compelling and is so raw, so new and so real, that story alone will really give people hope.
00:36:20.880 --> 00:36:22.400
And that's what people need.
00:36:22.960 --> 00:36:24.000
Need hope, sure.
00:36:24.320 --> 00:36:24.639
Sure.
00:36:25.360 --> 00:36:32.079
And even the fact that you admitted as a man, as a male, that you had gone through depression.
00:36:32.400 --> 00:36:38.559
Thank you so much for that, because people think that success looks like perfection.
00:36:38.639 --> 00:36:41.920
Somebody said to me, You're always on top of your game.
00:36:42.000 --> 00:36:43.199
I'm like, no, I'm not.
00:36:43.360 --> 00:36:46.719
You were not with me last week when I was lying in the floor crying.
00:36:46.800 --> 00:36:47.760
Where were you?
00:36:47.920 --> 00:36:48.480
Exactly.
00:36:48.639 --> 00:36:48.960
Exactly.
00:36:49.519 --> 00:36:50.880
Always so motivated.
00:36:51.039 --> 00:36:52.000
No, I'm not.
00:36:52.320 --> 00:36:53.119
Yeah, yeah.
00:36:53.360 --> 00:36:58.559
And so your honesty, and I just want to say to listeners, you know, hope.
00:36:59.039 --> 00:37:01.920
I was joking, hope is a powerful force.
00:37:02.079 --> 00:37:04.639
I was jokingly saying to uh Dr.
00:37:04.800 --> 00:37:11.519
Walker that in Atlanta on Monday it was 90 degrees, and then at the end of the week it's like 50 something.
00:37:12.000 --> 00:37:23.039
And I said, I'm gonna do a video on just like the weather changes quickly, in the twinkling of an eye, yes, your life can shift and change.
00:37:23.199 --> 00:37:28.239
Yeah, and and and let me just add, and then the question becomes what are you gonna do about it when it does change?
00:37:29.199 --> 00:37:31.679
What is your response, you know?
00:37:31.920 --> 00:37:45.840
Um, and going back to that statement I made about the pastor, how many sessions did I have encouraging other people to hold on, to hang in there, be strong, you know what I'm saying?
00:37:46.159 --> 00:37:49.199
And then here it is at my door, right?
00:37:49.280 --> 00:37:51.039
And yes, and guess what I did?
00:37:51.199 --> 00:37:55.280
I fortified myself with other people who could speak into my life.
00:37:55.360 --> 00:37:59.119
I didn't try to do it on my own, I didn't try to do it on my own.
00:37:59.280 --> 00:38:06.159
Uh, a couple of pastors that I had pulled in to get that spiritual insight.
00:38:06.559 --> 00:38:08.320
Then I here's something else that I did.
00:38:08.480 --> 00:38:09.760
Went to counseling.
00:38:10.000 --> 00:38:11.280
You mentioned counseling.
00:38:11.599 --> 00:38:14.960
I believe in it, I believe in it wholeheartedly.
00:38:15.119 --> 00:38:20.400
Um, that you gotta you gotta talk, you gotta get it out, and you need professional help.
00:38:20.480 --> 00:38:25.119
Sometimes you need spiritual help, but sometimes, but you need professional help too.
00:38:25.280 --> 00:38:34.400
Um, some learned people who know how the mind works and how you know psychological issues and and what you're dealing with.
00:38:34.559 --> 00:38:44.880
And that was very eye-opening, uh, having a counselor and speak to things because there are things that remember, most of my training was from a spiritual and pastoral lens.
00:38:44.960 --> 00:38:45.519
Yeah.
00:38:45.840 --> 00:38:56.480
But you also need professional guidance to help you to talk about trauma and childhood traumas and the things that you go through and don't even realize it.
00:38:56.559 --> 00:39:02.079
You know, people can go through a whole life and not realize all the things that have happened to them.
00:39:02.559 --> 00:39:04.159
So true, so true.
00:39:04.480 --> 00:39:19.840
And I'm a counselor, and I'm just a big proponent that they're saying now that by the time we're eight years old, whatever we have experienced, seen, caught, or heard has formed who we are.
00:39:19.920 --> 00:39:24.079
And then by the time you're 12 or 13, then that's it.
00:39:24.239 --> 00:39:39.119
And so trauma uh and dysfunctional family systems and perceptions and the ways of doing stuff, we take that throughout our whole lives and we're oblivious that we're even walking in all of that.
00:39:39.360 --> 00:39:57.199
Absolutely, and sometimes we only do what we've seen or was taught, whether it be right or wrong, you know, and that's why it's important to you know investigate, get out, be open-minded, be willing to shift and change because everything that we were taught was not always right.
00:39:57.679 --> 00:39:59.119
So true, so true.
00:39:59.280 --> 00:40:13.519
So, all of my male listeners, guys, you have exhibit a right here of an alpha male, a spiritual man who has been very vulnerable and real.
00:40:13.679 --> 00:40:18.480
And I'm gonna say to all of you, reach out and get the help you need.
00:40:18.559 --> 00:40:23.599
If you need, if you feel that you're more comfortable with a male, do that.
00:40:23.760 --> 00:40:33.440
But don't don't just sit in silence and in desperation and hold all of that stuff in, ladies.
00:40:33.679 --> 00:40:48.960
As you are watching and are listening to the pot this podcast, share this with your husband, your brother, your friends, because men desperately need to understand that there's no shame.
00:40:49.280 --> 00:40:49.920
No shame.
00:40:50.320 --> 00:40:52.960
No shame in needing and reaching out for help.
00:40:53.679 --> 00:40:53.920
Yep.
00:40:54.480 --> 00:40:54.880
Wow.
00:40:55.840 --> 00:41:00.719
So lastly, what would you like to leave with with listeners and followers?
00:41:00.880 --> 00:41:03.519
And then how can people reach you?
00:41:03.840 --> 00:41:05.840
Uh, are you still speaking?
00:41:06.000 --> 00:41:09.440
Um, yes, how can they contact you, etc.
00:41:10.800 --> 00:41:24.480
Well, the thing that I would like to leave is anything that you're going through, it's not over unless you determine that it's over.
00:41:24.880 --> 00:41:25.840
That's good.
00:41:26.960 --> 00:41:39.679
As long as you have hope, as long as you believe in yourself, as long as you believe in God, as the scripture says, with God all things are possible.
00:41:40.559 --> 00:41:47.599
Um, which obviously then tells us that with it doesn't say with man all things are possible, but it does say with God.
00:41:48.000 --> 00:41:52.400
And it would be suggested to us that we can't live this life without Him.
00:41:52.880 --> 00:41:55.039
You have to be connected to Him.
00:41:55.280 --> 00:42:08.719
Um, so as long as you believe that there's hope, and as long as you make the decision to keep going, um, the outcome will always work out in your favor.
00:42:09.599 --> 00:42:21.199
And even, and of course, when I say something like that, it doesn't mean that everything works out because sometimes in business or life, you know, you may set out to do one thing, but it still doesn't mean that it's over.
00:42:21.360 --> 00:42:24.320
You sometimes you may have to make adjustments, right?
00:42:24.559 --> 00:42:26.719
And or recalculate.
00:42:26.880 --> 00:42:30.880
Um, but it's the person who just says I'm done, that's the person who loses.
00:42:31.039 --> 00:42:37.840
As long as you keep saying, I'm gonna hang in there, I'm gonna fight, uh, I'm gonna decide to continue.
00:42:38.079 --> 00:42:45.280
Um, that's how you become a champion, and that's what I wrote this book for: The Champion's Mind, How to Defeat Giants and Win.
00:42:45.599 --> 00:42:48.480
Um, it's all about being that champion.
00:42:48.639 --> 00:42:54.400
David did seven things in that book that helped him to be the champion that he was.
00:42:54.559 --> 00:43:00.480
But it's not just a book about uh about David, but it is a book about leadership, right?
00:43:00.639 --> 00:43:04.400
Leading, leading an organization, leading a church, leading a school.
00:43:04.559 --> 00:43:07.679
Those seven principles are timeless in that book.
00:43:07.840 --> 00:43:16.400

That same spirit, that same power, that same energy is on the inside of you.
00:46:06.000 --> 00:46:11.519
I want you to tap into it because it's on the inside and create an amazing week.
