⚡ TL;DR
The job search has changed, and sending more applications is no longer enough. Ron Hetrick and Andy Hilger explain how networking, second-degree connections, curiosity, adaptability, and a clear career story can help job seekers stand out in an increasingly automated hiring process. They also explore how understanding the value created in previous roles can build confidence and open new opportunities during a career transition.
📄 Show Notes
Job search strategies built for a more stable labor market do not fully reflect today's reality. Ron Hetrick and Andy Hilger examine why job seekers are facing a hiring process increasingly shaped by technology, automated screening, and overwhelming application volumes.
Ron brings a labor market perspective, emphasizing the importance of understanding what employers and industries actually need as the economy evolves. Andy focuses on the human side of the job search, including relationships, career identity, and the importance of understanding the story behind a career path.
The conversation explores why networking can extend far beyond existing contacts. Andy highlights the value of second degree connections and the role of people who can advocate for a candidate. The discussion also examines how curiosity, initiative, and adaptability can demonstrate value when experience alone does not tell the full story.
For people navigating a career transition, the job search can also become an opportunity to examine what they want from their work and how their past experiences connect. Andy explains how identifying a through line in a career can create a clearer and more meaningful professional story.
Ron and Andy also address the importance of staying connected to the value created in previous roles. For someone in a long job search, remembering how past work contributed to an organization can help preserve confidence and provide stronger examples when communicating professional value.
Ultimately, the episode presents the job search as a human process built around relationships, curiosity, purpose, and intentionality.
