What if healing isn't reaching a place where you never struggle again, but trusting yourself when you do?
When things finally start feeling better, it can be surprisingly difficult to simply enjoy them.
Instead, we may find ourselves waiting.
Wondering when the other shoe will drop. When we'll fall back into an old pattern. When depression, anxiety, overwhelm, disconnection, or some other familiar struggle will return and prove that the progress we've made wasn't real after all.
But what if returning to a familiar struggle doesn't mean returning to the beginning?
In this deeply personal episode, Trish explores a change she didn't expect to find in her own healing journey: she is no longer as afraid of backsliding as she once was.
Not because she believes she will never struggle again. But because she increasingly trusts her ability to find her way back.
Through personal reflection, practical neuroscience, and the lens of The Road to Reconnection™, Trish explores how Prediction as Protection can leave us bracing for the loss of the very things we've worked so hard to build, and how repeated experiences of navigating difficult moments can gradually create something different: self-trust.
This episode isn't about becoming so healed that nothing knocks you off balance.
It's about discovering a different kind of stability.
The kind that comes from knowing that even when your capacity narrows, even when old patterns reappear, and even when what you've learned doesn't feel immediately available, your growth hasn't disappeared.
In this episode, you'll learn:
- Why a difficult day, week, or season doesn't mean you've returned to the beginning.
- How the fear of backsliding can make it harder to fully participate in the moments when life is going well.
- Why familiar struggles can become evidence for old stories about who we are and what we should expect from our lives.
- How Prediction as Protection can leave us anticipating the next fall even while we're standing on solid ground.
- Why temporarily losing access to something you've learned is different from losing the growth itself.
- How self-compassion and support can help us stay with ourselves when our capacity narrows.
- Why self-trust doesn't have to mean trusting yourself never to struggle.
- How repeated experiences of finding your way back can gradually change your identity and what you predict about the future.
- Why healing doesn't remove the difficult parts of being human, but can change the way we experience and move through them.
Maybe progress isn't about finally reaching a place where you never lose your footing.
Maybe it's realizing that losing your footing doesn't erase the road you've already traveled.
You've learned things.
You've built resources.
You've developed relationships.
You've found your way through difficult moments before.
And every time you find your way back, you're creating new evidence that you can do it again.
Eventually, the goal may not be to trust that the good moments will last forever.
It may be to trust yourself even when they don't.

00:00:00.800 --> 00:00:04.160
Hello and welcome to the When Depression is in Your Bed podcast.
00:00:04.400 --> 00:00:07.519
Have you ever gotten to a place where things were finally going well?
00:00:07.759 --> 00:00:13.759
You felt better, maybe you were taking better care of yourself, maybe your relationship felt like it was in a better place.
00:00:13.919 --> 00:00:18.320
Maybe you were crossing things off your to-do list that had been on there for a really long time.
00:00:18.480 --> 00:00:24.559
And instead of simply being able to enjoy it, you found yourself wondering something like, when is the other shoe gonna drop?
00:00:24.719 --> 00:00:26.640
When am I going to fall off track again?
00:00:26.800 --> 00:00:29.280
I know that feeling incredibly well.
00:00:29.440 --> 00:00:35.200
Because I think when it comes to making progress, it can be scary wondering if we're ever actually going to get there.
00:00:35.359 --> 00:00:40.799
And I also think it can be scary when we start to wonder if we'll actually be able to stay there.
00:00:40.960 --> 00:00:44.960
Lately, I've been thinking about something that has profoundly changed for me.
00:00:45.119 --> 00:00:53.679
Not because I've gotten to a place where I never think I'll stumble again, but because I'm beginning to trust what will happen the next time that inevitable stumble occurs.
00:00:53.840 --> 00:00:55.679
I'm your host, Trish Sanders.
00:00:55.759 --> 00:01:03.439
I'm a licensed clinical social worker, certified Imago Relationship Therapist, relationship coach, and the creator of The Road to Reconnection.
00:01:03.520 --> 00:01:05.439
And I am delighted that you are here.
00:01:05.599 --> 00:01:06.959
Let's get started.
00:01:07.439 --> 00:01:11.840
I've been consciously dedicated to my own healing journey for decades.
00:01:12.000 --> 00:01:20.239
And yet, so many of the changes that I've been trying to make for so long have only started consistently happening over the last several years.
00:01:20.480 --> 00:01:24.079
Of course, I haven't gotten to a place where I think that my healing journey is complete.
00:01:24.239 --> 00:01:28.799
I think that I have much more growing to do, and I think that I'll continue growing over my whole life.
00:01:28.959 --> 00:01:37.920
But I do notice that I feel a lot more confident now in the progress that I think I will continue to make because of the evidence I have of the progress I've already been making over the last several years.
00:01:38.079 --> 00:01:45.040
And looking at my journey, I've been thinking, what exactly changed to allow all of that growth to finally start happening?
00:01:45.200 --> 00:01:52.480
Certainly there's an identity piece, and I've talked many times on the podcast how for much of my life I have identified as someone who is a complete and total mess.
00:01:52.560 --> 00:01:56.239
And as you can imagine, that didn't contribute much to helping me get things in order.
00:01:56.400 --> 00:02:01.439
There was such a disconnect between what I wanted for myself and who I believe myself to be.
00:02:01.599 --> 00:02:09.840
But I've been thinking about another important piece that has been huge for me, that I've seen in myself and in Ben and in so many of my clients over the years.
00:02:10.000 --> 00:02:12.639
You finally get to a place where things seem to be going well.
00:02:12.800 --> 00:02:18.400
You're feeling better, your relationship might feel better, you might be moving your body more or taking care of yourself better.
00:02:18.479 --> 00:02:22.639
You're finally feeling like the version of yourself that you actually want to be.
00:02:22.800 --> 00:02:24.400
And then something happens.
00:02:24.560 --> 00:02:27.520
You stumble, and the old familiar struggle is back.
00:02:27.680 --> 00:02:32.800
And suddenly it can feel like a confirmation of everything that you were afraid could be true.
00:02:33.039 --> 00:02:34.879
See, this is who you really are.
00:02:35.039 --> 00:02:36.240
You can't sustain this.
00:02:36.400 --> 00:02:37.199
It's inevitable.
00:02:37.360 --> 00:02:39.199
Look where you fell back to again.
00:02:39.439 --> 00:02:41.599
I've been there myself so many times.
00:02:41.840 --> 00:02:48.479
Maybe I wasn't feeling as bad, or maybe things weren't as bad in my relationship, or maybe I found that I was able to recover more quickly.
00:02:48.639 --> 00:02:54.240
But emotionally, it still felt devastating because the struggle wasn't only the struggle.
00:02:54.400 --> 00:02:55.360
It was evidence.
00:02:55.599 --> 00:03:00.560
Evidence for an old story about who I was and what I should really expect from my life.
00:03:00.800 --> 00:03:07.439
Over the years, I have had so many conversations about this cycle with myself, with Ben, and with so many clients.
00:03:07.599 --> 00:03:10.400
Because the worst part is often not the struggle itself.
00:03:10.560 --> 00:03:15.840
What can feel so incredibly heavy is what we tell ourselves having the struggle actually means.
00:03:16.000 --> 00:03:19.360
Maybe you're feeling depressed again, or your anxiety gets activated.
00:03:19.520 --> 00:03:27.439
Maybe you notice old patterns re-emerging in your relationship, or maybe you notice your house is getting messy again, or that you haven't intentionally moved your body in a while.
00:03:27.520 --> 00:03:30.080
And suddenly it's not just about what's happening right now.
00:03:30.240 --> 00:03:31.599
It's here we go again.
00:03:31.759 --> 00:03:33.039
I knew this wouldn't last.
00:03:33.199 --> 00:03:34.400
I knew I couldn't do it.
00:03:34.560 --> 00:03:36.159
I knew I couldn't trust this.
00:03:36.319 --> 00:03:42.080
And those thoughts and the feelings that come along with them can be the most painful part of what seems to be a backslide.
00:03:42.159 --> 00:03:44.800
It doesn't just feel like we've moved a few steps backwards.
00:03:44.960 --> 00:03:50.800
It feels like we've fallen all the way back to the start and we have to begin all over again.
00:03:51.039 --> 00:04:00.879
And when you're familiar with this kind of cycle, as I certainly have been in my life, it's really easy to understand when things are going well, how you start to worry when is the other shoe going to drop.
00:04:01.039 --> 00:04:06.159
And this makes so much sense to me through the lens that I've been calling prediction as protection.
00:04:06.319 --> 00:04:13.439
If your nervous system has repeatedly experienced things get better and then they get worse, you feel hopeful and then you struggle again.
00:04:13.599 --> 00:04:17.519
You finally find your footing and then it feels like the ground is crumbling beneath you.
00:04:17.680 --> 00:04:22.319
So of course, your nervous system starts predicting that that pattern will occur again.
00:04:22.480 --> 00:04:25.279
And feeling good can almost become a warning.
00:04:25.519 --> 00:04:30.079
Don't get too comfortable, don't think this is going to last, don't trust this.
00:04:30.319 --> 00:04:36.639
Because maybe if you expect the fall, you'll be better prepared for the landing and maybe it won't quite hurt so much.
00:04:36.800 --> 00:04:39.120
But there's a cost in living like that too.
00:04:39.279 --> 00:04:43.360
Because if we're constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop, we're not really here.
00:04:43.519 --> 00:04:46.639
We're partially living in a struggle that hasn't even happened yet.
00:04:46.800 --> 00:04:50.399
There's a 21 pilot song called Backslide that I was listening to the other day.
00:04:50.560 --> 00:04:53.519
And the whole idea of that song really resonates with that fear.
00:04:53.680 --> 00:04:55.759
The fear I don't want to go back there again.
00:04:55.920 --> 00:04:58.720
I don't know if I can climb out of that hole if I fall back in.
00:04:58.879 --> 00:05:00.480
And I have certainly known that fear.
00:05:00.639 --> 00:05:03.680
But as I was listening to that song the other day, something occurred to me.
00:05:03.839 --> 00:05:08.399
I noticed that I didn't feel that same old familiar fear about backsliding.
00:05:08.560 --> 00:05:10.160
And I found that really interesting.
00:05:10.319 --> 00:05:13.120
And certainly it's not like, okay, I'm all healed.
00:05:13.199 --> 00:05:13.680
I'm done.
00:05:13.839 --> 00:05:15.040
I've finally arrived.
00:05:15.279 --> 00:05:16.160
Absolutely not.
00:05:16.319 --> 00:05:20.079
My nervous system is going to continue acting like every other human nervous system.
00:05:20.240 --> 00:05:25.199
There will absolutely be experiences that register in my nervous system as cues of danger.
00:05:25.279 --> 00:05:28.560
And my nervous system will continue to move into self-protection at times.
00:05:28.720 --> 00:05:31.360
And sometimes my capacity may become more narrowed.
00:05:31.519 --> 00:05:33.360
That's not evidence that healing didn't work.
00:05:33.519 --> 00:05:34.959
That's evidence that I'm human.
00:05:35.120 --> 00:05:36.879
But here's what I think has changed for me.
00:05:37.040 --> 00:05:44.160
I don't take that experience anymore as evidence that I have backslid all the way to the beginning and I need to start all over.
00:05:44.319 --> 00:05:51.680
Of course, I may experience an old feeling of discomfort, or my nervous system might go into that familiar place of self-protection.
00:05:51.759 --> 00:05:56.480
I may feel overwhelmed and I may even shut down or fall into old familiar patterns.
00:05:56.639 --> 00:06:01.600
But no matter what, I'm not actually standing in exactly the same place that I've stood before.
00:06:01.759 --> 00:06:06.560
I've experienced so much as I've traveled on my journey from where I used to be.
00:06:06.639 --> 00:06:07.759
I've learned so much.
00:06:07.920 --> 00:06:09.279
I've developed resources.
00:06:09.439 --> 00:06:14.399
I've built better relationships with myself, with trusted supports, and with my husband.
00:06:14.560 --> 00:06:17.120
And I've practiced traveling the road to be able to come back.
00:06:17.279 --> 00:06:20.720
I don't experience a backslide as a total reset anymore.
00:06:20.879 --> 00:06:25.360
If I become overwhelmed tomorrow, I don't suddenly lose everything that I've learned.
00:06:25.519 --> 00:06:30.480
I don't lose all the ways that I've learned to recognize what my nervous system is communicating to me.
00:06:30.639 --> 00:06:34.720
I don't lose the experiences I've had of finding my way through something difficult.
00:06:34.879 --> 00:06:40.800
I may temporarily have less capacity available, and I may not be able to access everything that I've learned immediately.
00:06:40.879 --> 00:06:42.160
But that doesn't mean it's gone.
00:06:42.319 --> 00:06:44.879
And I think that that's a really important distinction to make.
00:06:45.040 --> 00:06:49.519
Not available in this moment is not the same thing as gone forever.
00:06:49.680 --> 00:06:53.519
And I think that that has helped me to define what self-trust means.
00:06:53.759 --> 00:07:00.639
It's not that I trust myself to never fall apart or to always stay regulated, or that I trust that I'll never struggle the way I used to.
00:07:00.800 --> 00:07:08.240
I'm not sure that I can really promise myself any of those things, but I can increasingly say I trust myself to find my way back.
00:07:08.399 --> 00:07:11.600
More and more I trust myself to notice what's happening.
00:07:11.759 --> 00:07:14.399
I trust myself to take pause when I need.
00:07:14.720 --> 00:07:18.079
I trust myself to get curious and to reach out if I need support.
00:07:18.240 --> 00:07:19.600
I trust myself to rest.
00:07:19.680 --> 00:07:26.639
And I trust that I'm going to tune into my nervous system without immediately blaming myself for feeling like I'm struggling again.
00:07:26.800 --> 00:07:31.439
And I trust if I can't do any of those things right away, that I can sit with the discomfort for a bit.
00:07:31.519 --> 00:07:35.759
And I trust that I no longer think that I always have to handle everything all by myself.
00:07:35.920 --> 00:07:43.279
I trust that I can reach out more and more to the network that I've built and continue to build so that when I'm really in the thick of it, I don't have to be alone.
00:07:43.439 --> 00:07:52.000
And I also trust that more and more when I'm feeling stuck, I feel less of a need to push myself or judge myself and think that I'm supposed to be somewhere else.
00:07:52.160 --> 00:08:00.240
I find that I increasingly have more compassion for myself and I look for what's genuinely available to me in any particular moment and I take it from there.
00:08:00.319 --> 00:08:12.319
And I notice that the less I fight these kinds of experiences and the less I hold on so tightly to that misery or that hopelessness, the more space there is for those kinds of moments to eventually just pass.
00:08:12.480 --> 00:08:19.360
And more and more they give way to the next step that I can take so I can find my way back to the place that I really want to be.
00:08:19.519 --> 00:08:24.720
A place now that I've traveled to and practiced so many times over the past several years.
00:08:24.879 --> 00:08:27.759
And that feels like a very different kind of stability.
00:08:27.920 --> 00:08:31.279
I'm not stable because nothing will ever knock me off balance again.
00:08:31.439 --> 00:08:41.840
I feel more stable because I increasingly trust myself to be able to stay with myself in those moments when I feel off balance and I know that eventually I'll find my way back again.
00:08:42.000 --> 00:08:44.159
And that's very different from how it used to feel.
00:08:44.320 --> 00:08:48.480
In the past, when I fell off track, the story was see, you can't be consistent.
00:08:48.639 --> 00:08:50.399
You don't really know how to take care of yourself.
00:08:50.559 --> 00:08:53.279
It's going to take forever to get back to where you just were.
00:08:53.360 --> 00:08:56.960
And the especially painful, you don't even know how you got there in the first place.
00:08:57.120 --> 00:08:58.799
So how do you think you're going to return?
00:08:58.960 --> 00:09:03.200
But those old feelings and thoughts just don't come up for me in the same way that they used to.
00:09:03.360 --> 00:09:05.919
Because I know more about what truly supports me now.
00:09:06.000 --> 00:09:14.399
And every time I find my way back, I collect a little more evidence that I actually can intentionally take steps back towards the place that I really want to be.
00:09:14.480 --> 00:09:17.840
And I think all that evidence gradually changes something even deeper.
00:09:18.000 --> 00:09:20.000
It changes what I believe about myself.
00:09:20.159 --> 00:09:22.799
For so many years, the story was I'm a mess.
00:09:22.960 --> 00:09:24.960
I can't consistently take care of myself.
00:09:25.120 --> 00:09:29.759
Even if things get better for a little while, I know that I'm going to fall back to where I started from.
00:09:29.919 --> 00:09:33.519
And today, my new story is certainly not I'm never going to struggle again.
00:09:33.679 --> 00:09:37.039
That wouldn't be realistic, and my nervous system wouldn't believe it.
00:09:37.200 --> 00:09:41.279
My new story is something more like, I'm someone who knows how to come back.
00:09:41.440 --> 00:09:43.759
And that's a completely different identity.
00:09:44.000 --> 00:09:46.320
Every time I come back, I create a little more evidence.
00:09:46.559 --> 00:09:48.879
Evidence that struggling doesn't mean I failed.
00:09:49.120 --> 00:09:52.000
Evidence that losing my footing doesn't mean I've lost the road.
00:09:52.240 --> 00:09:57.120
Evidence that I now know so much more about finding my way back than I used to.
00:09:57.279 --> 00:10:00.080
And that evidence is gradually changing what I predict.
00:10:00.240 --> 00:10:06.799
Instead of here we go again, I'm backsliding all the way back to the beginning, and I don't know if I have the strength to do this all over again.
00:10:06.960 --> 00:10:10.320
There's increasingly room for, okay, I'm struggling right now.
00:10:10.480 --> 00:10:11.120
What do I need?
00:10:11.279 --> 00:10:11.919
Who can help?
00:10:12.000 --> 00:10:15.440
What's helped me find my way back before that I might be able to use again?
00:10:15.600 --> 00:10:18.000
And here's something that feels really strange to say.
00:10:18.159 --> 00:10:22.000
I'm almost curious what the next big bump in the road will be like for me.
00:10:22.159 --> 00:10:30.639
I'm absolutely not asking for one to appear anytime soon, but over the last several years, I've watched myself move through really hard times differently.
00:10:30.720 --> 00:10:35.279
And I'm actually curious what I'll discover about myself and my capacity the next time.
00:10:35.440 --> 00:10:36.960
What will I recognize sooner?
00:10:37.120 --> 00:10:38.960
Will I reach out to someone faster?
00:10:39.120 --> 00:10:40.320
Who will I reach out to?
00:10:40.480 --> 00:10:42.080
Will I speak to myself differently?
00:10:42.240 --> 00:10:48.639
Will I be able to hold on to that idea that my struggle doesn't mean that I've lost all the progress that I've made so far?
00:10:48.799 --> 00:10:54.559
And that curiosity feels profoundly different than the fear that I've lived with for so many years.
00:10:54.799 --> 00:11:02.639
The more I reflected on this, the more I realized that one of the greatest signs of my own growth is not that I think finally that I won't ever backslide again.
00:11:02.799 --> 00:11:08.960
It's now that I have a new experience where the idea of backsliding just doesn't scare me in the same way that it used to.
00:11:09.120 --> 00:11:13.360
And as I say that, I know I might have a moment where backsliding feels scary again.
00:11:13.519 --> 00:11:19.440
And I'm totally okay with that because I think that I'll be able to hold that moment with more compassion than I ever have before.
00:11:19.519 --> 00:11:29.519
And I no longer think that progress means I'm going to get somewhere where I will never backslide again, that I'll somehow arrive at this magical place and more or less somehow stay there.
00:11:29.679 --> 00:11:33.200
I no longer hold myself to that unachievable standard of progress.
00:11:33.360 --> 00:11:36.639
Our nervous systems are not designed to remain in one state.
00:11:36.720 --> 00:11:42.159
They are continually responding to what's happening inside of us, outside of us, and between us.
00:11:42.320 --> 00:11:45.840
Sometimes our capacity will expand, and sometimes it will narrow.
00:11:46.000 --> 00:11:50.240
Sometimes we'll feel grounded and connected, and sometimes we'll move into self-protection.
00:11:50.399 --> 00:11:52.799
Growth doesn't mean that those shifts stop happening.
00:11:52.960 --> 00:12:02.480
I think that growth means that as we continue to navigate through those experiences, we'll continue to build more and more trust that we're able to navigate through those kinds of experiences.
00:12:02.720 --> 00:12:05.120
And I think that changes the joyful moments too.
00:12:05.200 --> 00:12:12.480
Because if I don't have to try to hold on so desperately to those good moments for fear of losing them, I actually get to be there in those moments.
00:12:12.639 --> 00:12:15.279
And I can actually enjoy what's happening right now.
00:12:15.440 --> 00:12:20.559
Because I don't need to believe that a joyful moment is going to last forever in order to feel safe enough.
00:12:20.720 --> 00:12:28.080
I don't have to trust that that good feeling is going to last forever, because I can trust myself to respond to whatever comes up.
00:12:28.240 --> 00:12:37.360
For so long, I carried a narrative that if I was just good enough, healed enough, together enough, that somehow life would stop being so hard.
00:12:37.519 --> 00:12:39.759
But sometimes being human is hard.
00:12:39.919 --> 00:12:46.879
There are going to be losses, disappointments, stresses, overwhelm, and moments that our nervous system experiences as dangerous.
00:12:47.039 --> 00:12:50.480
So healing doesn't mean getting to a place that's safe enough that you'll never leave.
00:12:50.639 --> 00:12:54.559
Healing and growth can't change the experience of what it means to be human.
00:12:54.639 --> 00:13:01.039
But healing can mean that you've developed more trust in yourself, more attunement with your nervous system, that you've built more supportive networks.
00:13:01.200 --> 00:13:04.720
And as you continue to heal and grow, you find that you're traveling a new road.
00:13:04.799 --> 00:13:12.080
And even if you lose your footing and you find yourself back on a path that you used to travel, healing can help you trust that you know how to find your way back.
00:13:12.240 --> 00:13:15.600
I'm no longer trying to be someone who never loses her way.
00:13:15.759 --> 00:13:20.960
Instead, I'm finding that I'm someone who can trust herself to find her way back again and again.
00:13:21.039 --> 00:13:23.679
And I think that there's something incredibly hopeful about that.
00:13:23.840 --> 00:13:28.159
And I hope that there's something in today's conversation that feels hopeful for you too.
00:13:28.480 --> 00:13:33.440
As our time comes to a close, I ask you to keep listening for just a few more moments.
00:13:33.600 --> 00:13:35.759
Because I want to thank you for showing up today.
00:13:35.840 --> 00:13:43.120
And I want to leave you with an invitation as you hit stop and move back out into the world on your own unique wellness journey.
00:13:43.279 --> 00:13:51.519
In order to move from where you are today to the place where you want to be, the path may seem long or unclear or unknown.
00:13:51.600 --> 00:14:00.320
And I want you to know that if that seems scary or daunting or downright terrifying or anything else, that is totally okay.
00:14:00.639 --> 00:14:04.399
Know that you do not have to create the whole way all at once.
00:14:04.559 --> 00:14:07.840
We don't travel a whole journey in one stride.
00:14:07.919 --> 00:14:12.879
And that is why my invitation to you today is to take a step, just one.
00:14:13.200 --> 00:14:16.080
Any type, any size, in any direction.
00:14:16.240 --> 00:14:22.960
It can be an external step that can be observed or measured, or it could be a step you visualize taking in your mind.
00:14:23.120 --> 00:14:31.120
It can be a step towards action or towards rest or connection or self-care or whatever step makes sense to you.
00:14:31.360 --> 00:14:46.159
I invite you to take a step today because getting to a place that feels better, more joyful, more connected than the place where you are today is possible for everyone, including you, and even when depression is in your bed.
