Contextualizing the Unchanging Gospel: Evangelical Models for Faithful Local Theology in the Global Church

Deep Dive into Contextualizing the Unchanging Gospel: Evangelical Models for Faithful Local Theology in the Global Church

The provided sources offer a strict Reformed and confessional critique of contemporary evangelical models of contextualization, specifically analyzing A. Scott Moreau’s taxonomy of linear, dialogical, cyclical, and organic frameworks. Both texts argue that while translating the gospel into local cultural forms is a necessary task for the global church, these methodological models risk severe theological compromise, syncretism, and cultural relativism if they are not entirely subjected to the supreme authority of Scripture.

The first source uses Paul’s sermon at the Areopagus in Acts 17 as the definitive canonical test case for contextualization. In Athens, Paul demonstrated cultural intelligence by observing local shrines and quoting pagan poets, utilizing these as points of contact. However, he did not accommodate the gospel to fit their worldview; rather, he directly contradicted their idolatry by proclaiming the sovereign Creator, demanding universal repentance, and culminating in the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ. This demonstrates that faithful local theology must remain conversionist, crucicentric, and prophetic, correcting culture rather than merging with it.

The second source applies the Westminster Confession of Faith to further critique specific modern missiological practices. It strongly rejects methods that compromise biblical church order or doctrines, such as the validation of extra-biblical dreams, Insider Movements that encourage Muslims to retain Islamic religious practices, Charles Kraft’s dynamic equivalence, and purely pragmatic church planting movements. To counter these errors, the author provides an expository sermon framework on Colossians 2:8-15, emphasizing that the church must rely on the sovereign sufficiency of Christ and the objective, expository preaching of the inerrant Word to overcome deceptive human philosophies.

Ultimately, both sources conclude that true contextualization does not adapt divine truth to human preferences, but transforms cultures through the unadulterated proclamation of the historic Christian faith.
