Park Bench Perspectives - Episode 23 - From Newport Beach to Little League Sponsors: Donuts, Old Teams, and Old Maps

WEBVTT
00:00:25.760 --> 00:00:28.160
Helping me to win the fire.
00:00:30.800 --> 00:00:33.759
Hey, and welcome to the Park Bench Perspective Podcast.
00:00:33.840 --> 00:00:37.119
I'm Carlos Figueroa, my co-host Mike Hammer.
00:00:37.280 --> 00:00:38.240
How are you doing?
00:00:38.640 --> 00:00:49.840
Carlos, I am doing well, and I hope you are doing as well as me, considering I'm on a beach in Newport Beach.
00:00:50.159 --> 00:00:55.679
Had to come here for work, but then today there's no work, so it's just being a beach bum.
00:00:55.840 --> 00:00:56.799
Alright, well, you know what?
00:00:56.880 --> 00:01:01.679
I uh uh you are our special park bench perspectives California correspondent.
00:01:01.840 --> 00:01:05.280
Can you tell us what the perspective is from the bench out in California?
00:01:05.599 --> 00:01:06.000
Let's see.
00:01:06.079 --> 00:01:09.040
They're lining up their chairs to hold their spot on the beach.
00:01:09.359 --> 00:01:10.560
The tents are coming up.
00:01:10.719 --> 00:01:16.560
The coffee shop was a 15-minute wait for uh just a cup of drip coffee.
00:01:17.120 --> 00:01:22.319
Did you go to a chain or was it a special kind of California chain, or did you get some coffee?
00:01:22.640 --> 00:01:24.000
It's a coffee.
00:01:24.879 --> 00:01:25.200
Okay.
00:01:25.760 --> 00:01:26.799
The coffee shop.
00:01:27.359 --> 00:01:29.920
But we stop by anybody's been to Newport Beach.
00:01:30.000 --> 00:01:30.959
I have never been here before.
00:01:31.120 --> 00:01:32.319
I've never been on a bench here before.
00:01:32.719 --> 00:01:33.760
It's very nice.
00:01:34.000 --> 00:01:37.920
We stopped at Blackeys, and I guess Blackeys is a historic locals.
00:01:38.319 --> 00:01:42.560
A lot of the sheriffs and police officers tear their badge off and leave it there.
00:01:42.719 --> 00:01:44.239
So it's where the cops go.
00:01:45.040 --> 00:01:45.920
All right, all right, cool.
00:01:46.079 --> 00:01:49.680
And then we are by oh the pier.
00:01:50.400 --> 00:01:51.280
I don't know.
00:01:52.239 --> 00:01:53.200
Oh, funny.
00:01:53.439 --> 00:01:53.920
I see it.
00:01:54.000 --> 00:01:58.319
Now somebody told me, oh, Chuck, our friend, said, Well, I remember being in Newport.
00:01:58.480 --> 00:02:01.040
We went to the old spaghetti factory, and there's still one.
00:02:01.200 --> 00:02:02.480
I can see it from here.
00:02:02.879 --> 00:02:03.760
Oh well, cool.
00:02:03.920 --> 00:02:06.640
I haven't been on I was on uh many moons ago.
00:02:06.719 --> 00:02:11.360
I was on a work trip out there, and uh the company that I was out seeing took us on a uh dinner tour.
00:02:11.439 --> 00:02:11.840
Uh oh.
00:02:12.080 --> 00:02:12.879
It was very nice.
00:02:13.039 --> 00:02:15.840
It was uh it was shrimps the size of your elbow, my friend.
00:02:16.159 --> 00:02:17.280
Big shrimps, okay.
00:02:17.439 --> 00:02:18.560
Yeah, I got a question.
00:02:19.039 --> 00:02:20.000
Oh, go for it.
00:02:20.240 --> 00:02:25.120
This is where the Loveys and Thurston Hall the Third kind of live because okay, all right.
00:02:25.280 --> 00:02:29.439
Yeah, there's there's a mixture of million dollar beach houses and then ten million dollar.
00:02:29.919 --> 00:02:31.520
We bought two and made it into one.
00:02:31.599 --> 00:02:32.479
Yeah, all right.
00:02:32.639 --> 00:02:34.240
I got a question for you.
00:02:34.400 --> 00:02:38.319
When you think of win Stevens Buick, what do you think of?
00:02:39.360 --> 00:02:40.080
It's funny.
00:02:40.319 --> 00:02:42.400
Yeah, I that that came up and I brought it to you.
00:02:42.479 --> 00:02:48.319
I I you know, I always thought of the name Win, like that's what are you guys gonna do?
00:02:48.400 --> 00:02:51.680
We're gonna win because we win, we're Stevens Buick, and we win.
00:02:52.080 --> 00:03:04.879
And then you learn later on in life because I remember it because I just saw somebody on Instagram, Mike Resnick, had a picture of his sister and him together over the years and those cheesy polyester uniforms we got.
00:03:05.520 --> 00:03:06.000
And I remember.
00:03:06.159 --> 00:03:06.479
You know what?
00:03:06.879 --> 00:03:10.479
I always thought Stevens Buick, didn't they have a little burgundy action going, I think?
00:03:10.639 --> 00:03:14.400
Oh, yeah, they were burgundy, they were red, red wine, dark wine, burgundy wine.
00:03:14.879 --> 00:03:15.360
Look to them.
00:03:15.520 --> 00:03:18.000
Yeah, they're we're we're not making it clear.
00:03:18.159 --> 00:03:20.879
Win's Wynne Stevens Buick was a St.
00:03:21.039 --> 00:03:25.680
Louis park company that sponsored a little league team in Park National Little League.
00:03:26.000 --> 00:03:28.960
And so we thought, you know what, let's think back.
00:03:29.199 --> 00:03:33.520
Any of those companies still exist that sponsored our ball teams.
00:03:33.680 --> 00:03:40.479
I don't think I'm fairly certain Wynne Stevens Buick no longer exists over there, right along uh what is it, Cedar Lake Road and 100?
00:03:40.879 --> 00:03:42.960
Yes, it's Cedar Lake Road and 100.
00:03:43.039 --> 00:03:48.080
It's kind of hard to get to, kind of by where the the factory that made cocoa puffs was over there.
00:03:48.319 --> 00:03:48.719
Yep.
00:03:48.879 --> 00:03:50.639
And there's a big helicopter going by.
00:03:50.960 --> 00:03:51.919
Good for them.
00:03:52.240 --> 00:03:54.719
But it was a hard one to get to.
00:03:54.879 --> 00:03:59.280
You kind of had to know which where you were going to get to it because it wasn't you couldn't get off 100 to get to it.
00:04:00.639 --> 00:04:10.000
But they sponsored for years, and then there's a competing car company that was our personal first Little League team at Lupian Oldsmobile.
00:04:10.319 --> 00:04:12.000
Jim Lupian Oldsmobile.
00:04:12.080 --> 00:04:14.080
We were red and white and black, yes.
00:04:14.400 --> 00:04:21.600
And Lupiant, I I don't know if the Lupians are still in the cult in the car game, but I know that Oldsmobile no longer exists for a long time.
00:04:21.759 --> 00:04:27.839
No, Lupiance and I think they own one dealership or a facsimile of whoever owns the Lupiant name.
00:04:27.920 --> 00:04:30.639
Yeah, owns one I think on 494, like a Chrysler.
00:04:31.759 --> 00:04:37.439
Lupiant was near and dear to my heart because they were right across what back then we called Highway 12.
00:04:37.680 --> 00:04:42.319
You just ride your bike down there, and then on Saturdays they'd have hot dogs and pop for car buyers.
00:04:42.399 --> 00:04:46.720
And so I would always wander in there and pretend I was with a family and grab a hot dog.
00:04:47.439 --> 00:04:48.000
Yes.
00:04:48.720 --> 00:04:50.160
And then a lot of us worked there.
00:04:50.319 --> 00:04:51.199
I worked there for a while.
00:04:51.360 --> 00:04:51.759
You did?
00:04:52.000 --> 00:04:52.639
Oh, that's right.
00:04:52.720 --> 00:04:54.560
You were a runner, you were a runner, weren't you?
00:04:55.040 --> 00:04:56.240
Car runners, yeah.
00:04:56.399 --> 00:04:56.720
Yep.
00:04:56.879 --> 00:04:59.360
We had uh pull them down, Bruce.
00:04:59.600 --> 00:05:04.560
You don't bring me down, Bruce, just bring it, just bring it down to the car wash all day long, right?
00:05:04.879 --> 00:05:11.920
We had to pull them up because they'd come in and move them down, so we'd have to move them 40, 50 feet so people could go in there.
00:05:12.000 --> 00:05:22.000
But it was when dealerships had their service center was busy because there would be six, seven service riders, the general manager.
00:05:22.240 --> 00:05:22.399
Yeah.
00:05:22.720 --> 00:05:29.920
Well, here's the thing the cars that were made in the 70s and early 80s in America were crap.
00:05:30.319 --> 00:05:35.519
So you needed a far more intimate relationship with your mechanic back then.
00:05:35.759 --> 00:05:49.120
The cutlass calais, yeah, the even though that was a new one, but even like the cutlass was a a long-standing muscle car, so to speak, didn't start up, but then they took a turn to the cheap and the the when the front-wheel drive was coming out.
00:05:49.199 --> 00:05:54.879
Yeah, God, we'd go, we and we'd have to go bring the rental cars back out to the lot, and it just snowed.
00:05:55.040 --> 00:06:06.720
There was a lot right behind where we parked the rental cars, and we'd go do the Rockfords, but we had an advantage because we had front wheel drive, and then we'd take them to the car wash a couple times to burn time.
00:06:07.040 --> 00:06:08.480
It was it was a good job.
00:06:08.639 --> 00:06:09.519
That was it was fun.
00:06:09.759 --> 00:06:16.000
The wonderful folks at Lupia never gave us a car, but our next team did give us a free dinner.
00:06:16.079 --> 00:06:19.199
We played for Rudolph's Barbecue.
00:06:19.439 --> 00:06:21.519
Yes, Rudolph's Barbecue.
00:06:21.600 --> 00:06:22.160
That was funny.
00:06:22.319 --> 00:06:23.600
Which is over there in Minneapolis.
00:06:23.680 --> 00:06:24.240
It was great.
00:06:24.399 --> 00:06:28.240
I remember an afterseason having a little banquet there, eating some food.
00:06:28.399 --> 00:06:40.079
That part of Minneapolis, I I my dad told me my when my dad and mom first were in Minnesota after my dad got back from the army in the 50s, their apartment was right there above, kind of the apartments that were right above.
00:06:40.399 --> 00:06:42.079
Rudolph's Rudolph's, yeah, yeah.
00:06:42.160 --> 00:06:43.279
So right off, what is that?
00:06:43.360 --> 00:06:45.600
Is that Hannapin?
00:06:45.839 --> 00:06:46.560
No, it's Lindell.
00:06:46.800 --> 00:06:48.160
Oh, it's a Lindale Hannapin.
00:06:48.319 --> 00:06:50.000
It's kind of where it all splits, it comes together.
00:06:50.160 --> 00:06:53.519
It's where Mortimer's is now, and liquor Lyles is kind of by there.
00:06:54.240 --> 00:06:54.800
Yep, yep.
00:06:55.040 --> 00:06:57.360
So give me some more, throw some more out there.
00:06:57.439 --> 00:06:58.079
What else do you got?
00:06:58.319 --> 00:06:59.279
We had Roto Rooter.
00:06:59.839 --> 00:07:00.720
Rodo Rooter.
00:07:01.279 --> 00:07:07.759
I don't know if they're out there as much in the I think they changed the name to Roto because Okay, yeah.
00:07:07.920 --> 00:07:11.040
Because you know everything's about shortening the word now.
00:07:11.439 --> 00:07:19.279
That, or let's just say a lot of times you think somewhere along the line they went through restructuring and they came back with the new LLC that said roto.
00:07:20.079 --> 00:07:21.839
That's one of those that's one of those meetings.
00:07:21.920 --> 00:07:26.319
I'm sure some consultant charged them a million dollars to say, hey, drop the rooter.
00:07:26.560 --> 00:07:28.079
Drop the rooter, we're going bankrupt.
00:07:28.160 --> 00:07:31.519
We'll drop the rooter, come back stronger and better, reorganized is roto.
00:07:31.680 --> 00:07:32.800
Yeah, yeah, exactly.
00:07:32.959 --> 00:07:33.279
Exactly.
00:07:33.439 --> 00:07:35.519
Or you saw it till your nephew, you really own it.
00:07:35.839 --> 00:07:36.560
What else do we have?
00:07:36.800 --> 00:07:38.480
We uh still existing today.
00:07:38.639 --> 00:07:39.680
We have Burger King.
00:07:39.759 --> 00:07:41.839
They were a sponsor of Burke National Little League.
00:07:42.160 --> 00:07:45.199
Burger King was fanning out on the last two.
00:07:45.360 --> 00:07:45.600
Yeah.
00:07:47.199 --> 00:07:48.000
Park National Bank.
00:07:48.399 --> 00:07:50.480
No, Park National Bank, yeah, they were the blue ones.
00:07:50.800 --> 00:07:51.439
That was Little League.
00:07:51.680 --> 00:07:53.439
Lions was Babe Ruth, right?
00:07:53.680 --> 00:07:55.040
Lions was Babe Ruth.
00:07:55.199 --> 00:07:56.639
There was like a black one.
00:07:58.319 --> 00:07:59.759
Like a black uniform, I'm sorry.
00:08:00.000 --> 00:08:00.639
Black uniform.
00:08:01.360 --> 00:08:06.079
I know, and I know in in Babe Ruth there was fire department, but I don't think there was a fire.
00:08:08.560 --> 00:08:12.800
Oaklands were Minnesota rubber, Minnesota Rubber, Transcontinental Tire.
00:08:13.199 --> 00:08:14.959
Transcontinental Tire.
00:08:15.120 --> 00:08:17.360
And that was our franchise.
00:08:17.759 --> 00:08:19.839
Oh, didn't Calhoun Cafe?
00:08:20.160 --> 00:08:21.279
Kowloon Cafe.
00:08:21.360 --> 00:08:22.800
That was a Babe Ruth one, though.
00:08:23.199 --> 00:08:23.839
Yep.
00:08:24.160 --> 00:08:25.519
Who was the Little League one?
00:08:26.079 --> 00:08:30.800
Lupin, Burger King, Wynne Stevens, Park National Bank.
00:08:32.480 --> 00:08:33.039
Huh.
00:08:33.519 --> 00:08:34.399
Alright, hold on.
00:08:34.480 --> 00:08:35.120
We can do this.
00:08:35.360 --> 00:08:36.399
We have the technology.
00:08:36.639 --> 00:08:37.679
Babe Ruth though.
00:08:37.919 --> 00:08:38.960
Eaton Industries.
00:08:39.120 --> 00:08:43.039
I have no idea what Eaton Industries is, does, or was, but you may not remember.
00:08:43.120 --> 00:08:46.320
They were actually the name on the front of our 13-year-old team jersey.
00:08:46.720 --> 00:08:47.519
Yep, Eaton.
00:08:47.600 --> 00:08:48.480
I remember that.
00:08:49.919 --> 00:08:51.279
Wait a second.
00:08:52.240 --> 00:08:52.879
Yeah.
00:08:53.679 --> 00:08:56.159
Because you you and I actually had to play.
00:08:56.320 --> 00:08:58.399
We played for two squads when we were 13.
00:08:58.480 --> 00:09:01.600
We were on a regular Babe Ruth team as well as the 13-year-old team.
00:09:02.240 --> 00:09:02.399
Yeah.
00:09:02.559 --> 00:09:07.200
And we were the one of the only 13-year-olds that didn't get to play because we actually had a good team, but Mr.
00:09:07.279 --> 00:09:10.240
Rosen didn't want and the higher ups.
00:09:10.480 --> 00:09:12.320
We're not letting 13-year-olds play.
00:09:12.799 --> 00:09:15.039
And we had we had a decent team.
00:09:15.120 --> 00:09:16.720
We didn't get thrown into the fire, but yeah.
00:09:16.960 --> 00:09:18.960
We kept the bench occupied.
00:09:20.320 --> 00:09:22.159
The bench different.
00:09:22.799 --> 00:09:23.200
Yeah.
00:09:23.440 --> 00:09:31.919
I told that story about my first my very first Babe Ruth game, and a young man who was much, much bigger than I was pitching Dale Yonke.
00:09:32.240 --> 00:09:32.559
Yeah.
00:09:32.720 --> 00:09:36.159
And I remember the coach for the other team yelling, give him the bender.
00:09:36.639 --> 00:09:36.799
Yeah.
00:09:37.120 --> 00:09:43.759
And you never saw a guy duck out on pitches that much in your life.
00:09:44.159 --> 00:09:47.440
It was, let's just say it was interesting.
00:09:48.240 --> 00:09:49.840
I threw a big bender.
00:09:49.919 --> 00:09:50.960
And it was interesting.
00:09:51.120 --> 00:09:59.519
Now, the people we played with you, Jenny, Craig, a lot of these guys, we played a lot of off the wall, and we played a lot of pictures.
00:10:00.000 --> 00:10:03.360
We played a lot of baseball at the park, sandlot ball.
00:10:03.679 --> 00:10:15.039
So most of us had, I think you, because the big, but a lot of us that really, let's just say really good hitters had already seen it and stuck in on it.
00:10:15.120 --> 00:10:25.120
But I just remember so many times somebody for the first time seeing that, yeah, they're stepping out the and it's like lands on a strike, and I'm how'd that happen?
00:10:25.360 --> 00:10:31.360
And they're like, Yes, it looks like it's coming for your head, but gravity, speed, and spin, spin rate.
00:10:31.519 --> 00:10:34.399
We talked a lot about spin rate when I was in little league.
00:10:34.720 --> 00:10:35.600
They did not.
00:10:35.840 --> 00:10:36.799
We did they did not.
00:10:36.960 --> 00:10:38.960
We did not talk about any spin rate.
00:10:39.200 --> 00:10:42.240
All right, I actually have the team that we were missing.
00:10:42.480 --> 00:10:47.759
It was a company owned by a high school classmate of ours, father.
00:10:48.960 --> 00:10:50.960
Harris Industries, that's right.
00:10:51.039 --> 00:10:52.320
What the heck did they do?
00:10:52.559 --> 00:10:55.600
I believe that was a textile company.
00:10:55.919 --> 00:10:57.039
Okay, uh-huh.
00:10:57.360 --> 00:10:58.000
I remember that now.
00:10:58.240 --> 00:10:58.799
That's our Harris.
00:10:59.360 --> 00:11:08.159
And then I don't remember this, but according to the interwebs, 76 in the majors, there was a team that I don't remember called Fishbein, Bolter, and Brown.
00:11:08.399 --> 00:11:10.639
Yes, Fishbein, Bolter, Brown, and Kendall.
00:11:11.039 --> 00:11:12.080
And Kendall, yeah.
00:11:12.159 --> 00:11:12.720
Okay, there you go.
00:11:14.639 --> 00:11:16.080
It was Bolter's dad?
00:11:16.240 --> 00:11:16.399
Yeah.
00:11:16.720 --> 00:11:17.840
Fishbown's dad.
00:11:18.080 --> 00:11:18.720
Yeah.
00:11:19.759 --> 00:11:22.080
I guess Brown's dad and Kendall's dad.
00:11:22.159 --> 00:11:22.320
Yeah.
00:11:22.639 --> 00:11:24.639
I do you remember there okay?
00:11:24.720 --> 00:11:30.320
This was 76, so these teams changed by the time we got to Baby Ruth, but there was a coast-to-coast Bay Ruth team.
00:11:30.639 --> 00:11:33.120
I don't think we play Pick a Pop.
00:11:33.279 --> 00:11:34.159
I don't think it was there.
00:11:34.480 --> 00:11:35.440
Pick-a pop wasn't there.
00:11:35.600 --> 00:11:37.279
Hoagland was there, Minnesota Rubber was there.
00:11:37.360 --> 00:11:39.120
There was a Westwood shopping center team.
00:11:39.200 --> 00:11:40.000
That didn't exist.
00:11:41.200 --> 00:11:43.600
I don't think it existed when we played, no.
00:11:44.000 --> 00:11:45.120
VFW existed.
00:11:45.200 --> 00:11:47.600
VFW was when we, yep.
00:11:48.720 --> 00:11:52.639
It's funny how, and so is Minnesota Rubber still there?
00:11:52.960 --> 00:11:53.519
Still?
00:11:53.840 --> 00:11:54.720
Do they still exist?
00:11:54.799 --> 00:11:55.679
Is that what you're asking?
00:11:55.840 --> 00:11:57.120
So actually, I've got some of the other.
00:11:57.440 --> 00:11:58.399
Let's include all of St.
00:11:58.480 --> 00:11:58.960
Louis Park.
00:11:59.200 --> 00:12:01.360
I'm gonna give you some of the Pony League teams, okay?
00:12:01.759 --> 00:12:02.080
Okay.
00:12:02.960 --> 00:12:04.559
Charmar Cleaners.
00:12:05.120 --> 00:12:05.440
Okay.
00:12:06.320 --> 00:12:06.480
Okay.
00:12:06.879 --> 00:12:07.759
I'm not familiar with them.
00:12:08.080 --> 00:12:11.519
Schinder's News, which is kind of awesome that Schinder's in Minneapolis.
00:12:11.919 --> 00:12:14.399
Fountain Blue Salon had a team.
00:12:15.120 --> 00:12:16.159
Okay, interesting.
00:12:16.720 --> 00:12:18.240
First Western State Bank.
00:12:18.480 --> 00:12:20.399
There's all 76 Pony Leagues.
00:12:20.480 --> 00:12:22.879
So if you played in the Pony League, you're familiar with these teams.
00:12:23.279 --> 00:12:24.399
The Leaning Post.
00:12:25.120 --> 00:12:25.919
Leaning Post.
00:12:26.000 --> 00:12:28.879
Interesting that because the bars kind of got away from sponsoring.
00:12:29.120 --> 00:12:29.200
Yeah.
00:12:30.639 --> 00:12:33.519
That was back in the era of Chico's bail bonds on that news bears.
00:12:33.919 --> 00:12:40.480
So we got fifth Northwest Bank, which I gotta tell you, I would not be enthused if I was playing for oh, let's go, fifth.
00:12:40.799 --> 00:12:41.360
Fifth.
00:12:41.600 --> 00:12:42.399
One fifth.
00:12:43.279 --> 00:12:46.159
Fidelity File Box was apparently a team.
00:12:47.360 --> 00:12:49.200
And then Optimus Optimus Club.
00:12:49.279 --> 00:12:50.240
I did hear about that one.
00:12:50.879 --> 00:12:51.519
Okay, they were up.
00:12:52.080 --> 00:12:53.679
They were always very positive.
00:12:54.559 --> 00:12:54.960
Yep.
00:12:55.039 --> 00:12:58.480
And then in Colt Ball, which did Colt Ball exist?
00:12:58.639 --> 00:13:00.320
Is that kind of came along with Pony, right?
00:13:00.399 --> 00:13:02.320
It was Pony Colt and Baby Ruth Senior.
00:13:02.399 --> 00:13:03.440
Baby Ruth were the two.
00:13:03.679 --> 00:13:06.480
So in the Knights of Columbus had a team.
00:13:06.799 --> 00:13:07.200
Interesting.
00:13:07.679 --> 00:13:09.200
Abrams medals.
00:13:09.919 --> 00:13:10.240
No.
00:13:10.480 --> 00:13:11.360
This is 75.
00:13:11.600 --> 00:13:12.720
Corner Plaza.
00:13:13.919 --> 00:13:15.200
Shallard National Bank.
00:13:15.279 --> 00:13:16.080
And then Gambles.
00:13:16.240 --> 00:13:16.960
Remember Gambles?
00:13:17.440 --> 00:13:17.840
Oh, yeah.
00:13:17.919 --> 00:13:18.720
Proc Gambles.
00:13:19.039 --> 00:13:25.279
Was that part of Proctor and Gambles or just no Gambles was a separate, they were like a distressed retailer in Minneapolis?
00:13:25.440 --> 00:13:25.679
Oh.
00:13:26.159 --> 00:13:26.480
Okay.
00:13:26.879 --> 00:13:27.200
Okay.
00:13:27.360 --> 00:13:28.240
I get it.
00:13:28.480 --> 00:13:29.279
Interesting.
00:13:29.519 --> 00:13:33.440
And I know the sponsor obviously wasn't like you're breaking the bank.
00:13:33.519 --> 00:13:40.320
And it basically a lot of it had to do with if that business owner had a kid in this in the league in the store or somebody they knew.
00:13:40.480 --> 00:13:41.440
Did they get hit up?
00:13:41.519 --> 00:13:43.679
Because I remember I sponsored a number of teams.
00:13:45.120 --> 00:13:50.799
Mike, I'm gonna I'm gonna ask you if you are willing to engage in a thought experiment with me.
00:13:52.159 --> 00:13:56.240
So you said that you were in a coffee shop today, and it's like a half hour.
00:13:56.559 --> 00:13:57.679
Oh, it's fucking forever.
00:13:57.840 --> 00:13:59.440
And yes, it's 10:30, 11.
00:13:59.519 --> 00:14:05.600
And yeah, and little sidebar, they eat a lot of donuts here because every it's usually coffee and donuts.
00:14:06.480 --> 00:14:10.559
It's in 10 10 minute walk either way, there is I'm gonna go buy five donut shops.
00:14:10.799 --> 00:14:10.960
Really?
00:14:11.360 --> 00:14:16.720
These aren't not that they're better than quick tip donuts, but they're four or five dollar donuts.
00:14:16.960 --> 00:14:22.480
But I I don't thought I always thought California was like lean and healthy and Java juice.
00:14:22.559 --> 00:14:29.200
And what I found out from my girl Annie, who used to she used to live here.
00:14:29.360 --> 00:14:33.360
Kind of part of the reason we came up here, and uh she used to surf.
00:14:33.600 --> 00:14:37.360
Oh wow, maybe she still does, not regularly, because there's no surfing.
00:14:37.759 --> 00:14:39.600
There's no ocean in Colorado, yeah.
00:14:39.759 --> 00:14:45.200
Yeah, but she said they get up early for the surf, and so they'd have coffee and donuts in the morning.
00:14:45.440 --> 00:14:46.240
Oh wow.
00:14:46.480 --> 00:14:47.279
And that makes sense.
00:14:47.440 --> 00:14:50.799
And now the tourists here are like, about a donut.
00:14:50.879 --> 00:14:51.600
I'm not hungry.
00:14:51.759 --> 00:14:55.200
What does being hungry have to do with eating a donut?
00:14:55.440 --> 00:14:57.519
You just eat a donut because they're delicious.
00:14:58.000 --> 00:15:01.600
And they know that it's five dollars and they're looking at you, and you're not gonna be able to do it.
00:15:03.200 --> 00:15:07.120
I hope you're not looking for an argument for me on the wonderfulness of these donuts.
00:15:07.440 --> 00:15:18.879
No, I was kind of stealing some material, but when the guy comes back, so that donut will be five dollars, and you look at them and you're thinking they're gonna say, just kidding, and they go, Gotcha, fatty, and they're gonna pay it because it's a donut.
00:15:22.399 --> 00:15:24.559
There weren't coffee shops back in our day, right?
00:15:24.639 --> 00:15:26.960
There was you could go to a Perkins or a cafe.
00:15:27.279 --> 00:15:29.360
Well, we had Dunkin' Dunkin' Donuts when Dunkin' Donuts.
00:15:30.000 --> 00:15:30.559
We had Mr.
00:15:30.720 --> 00:15:33.679
Donut, but those were donut shops, not coffee shops.
00:15:33.919 --> 00:15:38.320
No, but the cops would go there and guess because they did serve a coffee.
00:15:38.399 --> 00:15:44.000
It's not hard to put a a couple, half a can of foliers in a big silver thing that percolates.
00:15:44.159 --> 00:15:50.639
But the fact that just it just reminded me of a story that doesn't fit, but I'm gonna tell it anyways because we're running short.
00:15:50.799 --> 00:15:51.120
Yeah.
00:15:51.360 --> 00:15:56.480
Our your our childhood friend, Bill, uh, we were at Mr.
00:15:56.639 --> 00:16:00.559
Donut in high school, and let me think of the proper way to say it.
00:16:01.039 --> 00:16:04.399
We were high as F, okay?
00:16:04.720 --> 00:16:05.039
Okay.
00:16:05.440 --> 00:16:06.080
We're at Mr.
00:16:06.240 --> 00:16:06.720
Donut.
00:16:07.759 --> 00:16:15.360
And there's four cops that are all there together, and we are we are bouncing back between paranoid and the giggles.
00:16:15.600 --> 00:16:16.000
Yeah.
00:16:16.159 --> 00:16:18.320
Man, they so know we're high.
00:16:18.559 --> 00:16:19.759
They can tell.
00:16:20.080 --> 00:16:21.679
They can tell, they know it.
00:16:21.919 --> 00:16:25.360
And they're like going, they're probably thinking, what would your parents be thinking?
00:16:25.840 --> 00:16:27.360
Don't put that pressure on me, man.
00:16:27.519 --> 00:16:28.480
I'm just 15.
00:16:28.559 --> 00:16:30.080
That's a lot of pressure to put on a kid.
00:16:30.320 --> 00:16:31.200
You know what they were thinking?
00:16:31.360 --> 00:16:34.240
They were thinking, oh man, I gotta cut the law.
00:16:34.320 --> 00:16:38.080
And they're thinking, oh man, I gotta go to my wife's cousin's wedding.
00:16:38.159 --> 00:16:38.960
They're thinking life stuff.
00:16:39.039 --> 00:16:39.679
They don't give a coffee.
00:16:39.919 --> 00:16:43.600
I got more hours on this, I got six more hours on this shift.
00:16:44.000 --> 00:16:46.799
And you know why cops are associated with donuts?
00:16:47.200 --> 00:16:47.759
Why?
00:16:48.000 --> 00:16:50.000
Because they go to a lot of coffee shops, you know why?
00:16:50.240 --> 00:16:50.879
Donut shops.
00:16:50.960 --> 00:16:51.679
You know why?
00:16:51.919 --> 00:16:52.559
Why?
00:16:52.960 --> 00:16:57.679
Because they know the difference between right and wrong, and liking donuts is right.
00:16:58.240 --> 00:16:58.799
You know what?
00:16:58.879 --> 00:16:59.440
You had me.
00:16:59.519 --> 00:17:00.480
You had me going there.
00:17:00.559 --> 00:17:02.559
That was impressive logic.
00:17:03.679 --> 00:17:05.119
Yeah, it's like anything.
00:17:05.440 --> 00:17:21.839
I was plowing through some, I was plowing through a uh There was this there there was a short period in my life where I was spending a lot of time on digital slot machines because I was dating somebody at the time that was into that, and I used to love the slot machine there used to be called cops and donuts.
00:17:22.400 --> 00:17:26.400
And the more the more donuts the cop would eat, the more money you would make.
00:17:26.480 --> 00:17:27.759
You would go into the donut shop.
00:17:27.839 --> 00:17:28.880
That would be your bonus.
00:17:29.119 --> 00:17:31.839
How many donuts he consumed was how big your bonus.
00:17:31.920 --> 00:17:35.119
So I every once in a while I kind of long for those.
00:17:35.200 --> 00:17:36.640
My what were the older ones?
00:17:36.720 --> 00:17:38.799
I used to love the Munsters machine.
00:17:39.200 --> 00:17:39.839
Oh yeah.
00:17:40.000 --> 00:17:42.160
And then, oh, the spam machine?
00:17:42.319 --> 00:17:44.160
That's spam tacular.
00:17:44.400 --> 00:17:45.599
Ooh, spam tastic.
00:17:45.680 --> 00:17:49.119
I love the spam machine, but those haven't been spam to make it a comeback.
00:17:49.599 --> 00:17:51.359
Spam to make it a comeback.
00:17:52.480 --> 00:17:56.559
I I I was like I said, donuts are good anytime.
00:17:56.799 --> 00:18:01.680
And I don't know, but I kind of always fall back on the old fashions because it's just good.
00:18:01.839 --> 00:18:05.359
But Krispy Kreme is back in Minnesota finally after a long hiatus.
00:18:05.599 --> 00:18:06.960
Did you ever wonder if they were gonna make it?
00:18:08.240 --> 00:18:13.359
Because when they came out with gangbusters and everywhere, and you kind of get one, you're like, huh, okay, it's a warm donut.
00:18:13.599 --> 00:18:13.920
I get it.
00:18:14.000 --> 00:18:14.559
I'm not gonna be able to do that.
00:18:15.440 --> 00:18:19.200
The problem was is that sure while they were hot, Atkins hit hot.
00:18:19.440 --> 00:18:28.960
And and then carbs became evil and sugar became evil, and that but they're it's I'm not waiting a half hour for a hot donut.
00:18:29.039 --> 00:18:31.039
It they weren't that spectacular.
00:18:31.200 --> 00:18:31.519
They were good.
00:18:33.119 --> 00:18:42.000
Here's the bigger this is my own personal belief is these companies when they go like that and they grow gangbusters, it's all from borrowing money and investments.
00:18:42.319 --> 00:18:46.640
And if they uh and if anything keeps they gotta keep growing or people get off the bus.
00:18:46.880 --> 00:18:50.799
And I think that they ran into some headwind due to the low carb thing.
00:18:51.119 --> 00:18:52.240
Yeah, that's it.
00:18:52.640 --> 00:18:52.960
I don't know.
00:18:53.039 --> 00:18:54.480
They never got into the fancy ones.
00:18:54.720 --> 00:18:59.279
There are people that'll bring donuts to workplaces that are like from the place, oh look, it's a bacon donut.
00:18:59.440 --> 00:19:02.079
I'm like, okay, I like bacon, I like donuts, okay.
00:19:02.160 --> 00:19:04.960
But sometimes it's almost like just because you can't doesn't mean you should.
00:19:05.200 --> 00:19:10.079
This one donut shop I'm staring at had donuts with broken up chips on them.
00:19:10.240 --> 00:19:13.279
And I'm like, I don't know, but I'm not gonna spend five dollars.
00:19:13.599 --> 00:19:16.160
Um the old fashioned was huge, it was delicious.
00:19:16.319 --> 00:19:17.599
So I can't beat that.
00:19:17.759 --> 00:19:24.960
But the uh the yeah, and some of these that they sell franchises, if they sell too many, they already got their money and they bail.
00:19:25.200 --> 00:19:31.839
So I find myself going to north central Minnesota fairly frequently and driving by Clearwater, Nelson Brothers.
00:19:32.000 --> 00:19:32.880
Oh, we go there all the time.
00:19:33.279 --> 00:19:38.240
And I don't know if you've ever seen there's they have the on the billboard the picture of the girl, the donut is bigger than her face.
00:19:38.640 --> 00:19:44.000
And then the other day, uh we were we went up to Black Bear Casino to see Jeff Dunham.
00:19:44.160 --> 00:19:45.119
Very good show, very funny.
00:19:45.279 --> 00:19:46.319
Highly recommend Jeff Dunham.
00:19:46.480 --> 00:19:49.839
He's up at Black Bear, but driving up 35, you stop at Toby's.
00:19:49.920 --> 00:19:58.480
And I really said someone really should buy a Toby's donut and a Nelson's brother donut, and just decide ultimately, once and for all, who has the biggest donut.
00:19:58.960 --> 00:20:00.000
Yeah, yeah.
00:20:00.079 --> 00:20:02.799
When I go to Nelson's, I usually skip past that.
00:20:03.039 --> 00:20:15.119
I go to the cranberry fritter bread because at the restaurant I had up in in Glenwood, we would make uh uh uh turkey cranberry fritter, turkey fritter sandwich.
00:20:15.279 --> 00:20:25.759
Okay, and it's hard to duplicate unless you have a fry top, but it was turkey, the cranberry fritter bread, toast in butter, and then cheese, and then that cranberry.
00:20:26.480 --> 00:20:27.599
That sounds very ethnic.
00:20:28.000 --> 00:20:28.960
First of all, what are you?
00:20:29.039 --> 00:20:30.079
What is your nationality?
00:20:30.240 --> 00:20:30.799
I should know this.
00:20:30.880 --> 00:20:32.240
We've been friends since we were five.
00:20:32.480 --> 00:20:41.039
I would say I thought about half Norwegian, but I found out a lot of nor is that like a Norwegian dish that grandma would make, or is that just something you came across with Nelson Brother?
00:20:41.920 --> 00:20:42.640
This was delicious.
00:20:42.799 --> 00:20:44.799
Remember the Monte you know the Monte Carlo, and they have that.
00:20:45.119 --> 00:20:46.400
Oh, the Monte Carlo.
00:20:46.480 --> 00:20:46.720
Yeah, yeah.
00:20:46.880 --> 00:20:48.880
And the Monte Cristo with the cranberry sauce.
00:20:49.119 --> 00:21:05.440
This has it, but it's the fritterbread, so it's got the sweet and savory, it's got the savory turkey, but it's got the butter and the sweetness from the frosting on the fritterbread, and it's cranberry fritterbread, and then you dip it in cranberry sauce, it's very good.
00:21:05.519 --> 00:21:13.039
And it's a toasted, so it's almost like a grilled turkey fritterbread, cranberry salad, sandwich.
00:21:13.279 --> 00:21:15.119
But I like that both those shops.
00:21:16.559 --> 00:21:18.160
You mentioned Monte Carlo.
00:21:18.240 --> 00:21:21.599
I have to tell you, it's one of my fondest childhood memories.
00:21:21.680 --> 00:21:24.000
And my dad had a sign shop a couple places.
00:21:24.160 --> 00:21:29.279
One, I don't know if you've ever been to a I think they they called it Bonnie Malone's.
00:21:29.440 --> 00:21:30.480
It's a little restaurant there.
00:21:30.559 --> 00:21:35.039
That's where my dad's sign shop used to be, so right over off of First Avenue and Washington.
00:21:35.279 --> 00:21:38.880
And then he was over on the other side of the little bridge for a while.
00:21:39.039 --> 00:21:43.920
So we would go beginning in the early seventies, we would be going to Monte Carlo.
00:21:44.079 --> 00:21:50.240
And I ordered the same thing every time I went there for decades called the open face roast beef sandwich.
00:21:50.400 --> 00:21:54.640
And the last time I was there, like five, six, seven years ago, they don't have it on the menu anymore.
00:21:54.720 --> 00:21:55.920
And it just broke my heart.
00:21:56.000 --> 00:21:57.279
I don't like change, I'm old.
00:21:57.440 --> 00:21:58.319
Get off my lawn.
00:21:58.799 --> 00:22:00.799
Yeah, it's what What happened to that?
00:22:01.279 --> 00:22:03.119
And then the waitress is like, we don't have it anymore.
00:22:03.200 --> 00:22:04.720
I'm like, whoa, dude, that's cool.
00:22:04.880 --> 00:22:06.240
I'm not asking you to make it.
00:22:06.319 --> 00:22:08.400
I'm just I'm lamenting something, dude.
00:22:08.640 --> 00:22:11.839
I would like you to redo the menus right now and put it back on there.
00:22:12.000 --> 00:22:14.319
But yeah, I don't know, roast beef gets tough.
00:22:14.400 --> 00:22:15.119
It's expensive.
00:22:15.279 --> 00:22:17.039
I'm just known for my restaurant base.
00:22:17.440 --> 00:22:31.279
You have to spend the money to get really good roast beef that people like, because you can tell if you get a if you get a French dip, yep, or a filly, but French, you the first bite you know if this is gonna be a lot of tendons and chewy or if it's gonna be delicious.
00:22:31.359 --> 00:22:45.839
And it's just based on I remember when I had a sandwich shop and somebody say, if you don't get the best roast beef, don't offer roast beef because it's just it's not easy to get cheesy roast beef and not have people call you out on it.
00:22:46.160 --> 00:22:46.640
Wow.
00:22:46.880 --> 00:22:48.240
Look at you with the restaurant.
00:22:48.400 --> 00:22:52.960
You are the hospitality industry correspondent for the parking perspective.
00:22:53.519 --> 00:22:55.279
Do you know where Mavericks is?
00:22:55.440 --> 00:22:59.279
Or sandwich shop called Mavericks?
00:22:59.519 --> 00:23:01.359
No, I am not familiar with Mavericks.
00:23:01.680 --> 00:23:09.119
Okay, they have one in Roseville, Roseville, right off of Lexington and Larpenter or by that area where one of the original.
00:23:09.519 --> 00:23:11.200
Are they are they in the old cafe?
00:23:12.000 --> 00:23:14.160
Are they in the old lamp lader building?
00:23:14.480 --> 00:23:15.440
No, no, not right there.
00:23:15.519 --> 00:23:18.400
They're by yeah, that's right.
00:23:18.480 --> 00:23:20.960
It's a couple blocks north of the Como Zoo.
00:23:21.839 --> 00:23:24.559
Just in the Roseville where in your older hood, sorta.
00:23:24.799 --> 00:23:25.359
Yes, exactly.
00:23:25.519 --> 00:23:31.599
Lexington Larpenter, where the old one of the first snuffy melt shops is, one of the first Keys Cafe.
00:23:31.839 --> 00:23:38.319
Yeah, but it's a roast beef, like they do roast beef, but it's expensive.
00:23:39.039 --> 00:23:40.240
Think back to how long it was.
00:23:40.319 --> 00:23:41.279
Was it 20 years ago?
00:23:41.359 --> 00:23:45.440
I think the last time I saw Kenny Kegger was at that Keys Cafe.
00:23:45.680 --> 00:23:46.720
Yeah, but it wasn't that long.
00:23:46.960 --> 00:23:50.160
It was it was post-Marty Hammer.
00:23:50.880 --> 00:23:53.119
That still makes it like eight years ago, my friend.
00:23:53.920 --> 00:23:54.480
Yeah, exactly.
00:23:54.720 --> 00:23:57.039
I mean, it's been a long ass time.
00:23:57.279 --> 00:24:09.759
It's been a long ass time, and it doesn't seem like it's been a long ass time, but yeah, that was that was when we we met there, we were meeting up, but yeah, I what you know it's funny, one other thing, back to the the the team names.
00:24:09.920 --> 00:24:12.480
No, we at Elliott, we were the Elliott Eagles.
00:24:12.799 --> 00:24:18.000
We were do you remember any of the other Dakota, I do know Cedar Manor.
00:24:18.799 --> 00:24:23.279
Seriously, cut Cedar Manor, come let us know what your team nicknames were.
00:24:23.519 --> 00:24:26.000
There's gotta be a less one one one Braves.
00:24:26.079 --> 00:24:34.480
I will tell you, I was on the city council at Elliott School, and the principal whose name escapes me was pushing hard for the hummingbirds.
00:24:34.799 --> 00:24:39.039
And I said, Under no circumstances am I gonna play for the Elliott hummingbirds.
00:24:39.119 --> 00:24:40.799
People will laugh at us and mock us.
00:24:40.960 --> 00:24:42.480
We must be something strong.
00:24:42.720 --> 00:24:43.279
You want a bird?
00:24:43.440 --> 00:24:44.160
What about an eagle?
00:24:44.319 --> 00:24:46.640
Eagles are and you got the alliteration of Elliott Eagles.
00:24:46.720 --> 00:24:51.599
So this is 10-year-old fourth grade Carlos arguing, don't pick a stupid nickname.
00:24:52.319 --> 00:24:58.240
Putting a sand in the a line in the sand, and figuratively and literally, I could do that for you here.
00:24:58.640 --> 00:25:04.319
And we knew we had to go on to become Oreos, which those birds aren't known as very tough either, I don't think.
00:25:04.559 --> 00:25:04.960
Yeah, exactly.
00:25:05.200 --> 00:25:05.599
No, they're not.
00:25:05.680 --> 00:25:08.720
They're that's gonna be alright.
00:25:08.880 --> 00:25:16.079
Although I will tell you this, and I I think I posted this once and someone told me to to di to dial it back, but I don't care.
00:25:16.319 --> 00:25:24.400
I feel a little bit put out when I hear people in Spring Lake Park refer to themselves as SLP.
00:25:25.039 --> 00:25:30.480
I'm sorry, but you're not, and then it's just as annoying as when the people in OSEO call themselves the Orioles.
00:25:30.559 --> 00:25:31.920
I'm sorry, we were there before you.
00:25:32.160 --> 00:25:32.960
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:25:34.000 --> 00:25:34.799
Name is taken.
00:25:34.960 --> 00:25:35.599
Sorry.
00:25:36.000 --> 00:25:38.319
Or they could call themselves the Oriorioles.
00:25:38.480 --> 00:25:39.200
Yeah, exactly.
00:25:39.279 --> 00:25:41.119
Ori the Ariolas?
00:25:41.599 --> 00:25:42.799
Ariolas or Orioles?
00:25:42.960 --> 00:25:44.000
Ori Orioles.
00:25:44.240 --> 00:25:44.400
Okay.
00:25:46.480 --> 00:25:50.880
I have never heard of a nickname for any of the other elementary schools in our neighborhood.
00:25:51.119 --> 00:25:51.759
That's wild.
00:25:52.000 --> 00:25:52.960
I wonder if they existed.
00:25:54.160 --> 00:25:56.319
SSLP, stupid Spring Lake Park.
00:25:56.400 --> 00:26:01.759
Next they can do Okay, if you live in Spring Lake Park, I'm sorry, I didn't mean that.
00:26:02.079 --> 00:26:05.359
It's kind of one of those areas I don't know really where the bound borders are.
00:26:05.599 --> 00:26:06.880
Kind of like Golden Valley.
00:26:07.039 --> 00:26:07.200
Yeah.
00:26:07.440 --> 00:26:09.039
Because Golden Valley kind of got a lot of people.
00:26:09.200 --> 00:26:13.200
Yeah, you're North Minneapolis, Northeast St.
00:26:13.359 --> 00:26:13.599
Louis.
00:26:14.000 --> 00:26:15.039
I never could figure that out.
00:26:15.119 --> 00:26:16.799
You can't use Highway 12.
00:26:16.960 --> 00:26:18.319
So do you remember Garcias?
00:26:18.960 --> 00:26:19.759
Oh yeah.
00:26:20.079 --> 00:26:22.960
Garcia's was considered Golden Valley, okay?
00:26:23.119 --> 00:26:24.480
Which is like, okay, that's on the other side.
00:26:24.640 --> 00:26:26.880
Shallard Park was considered St.
00:26:27.039 --> 00:26:27.839
Louis Park.
00:26:28.000 --> 00:26:28.480
Yep.
00:26:29.359 --> 00:26:31.039
Come back to me, like I'm five.
00:26:31.359 --> 00:26:33.680
The boulevard, I think, which was down from there.
00:26:33.839 --> 00:26:38.240
I think a lot of it had to do with the city sewer line water line.
00:26:38.400 --> 00:26:42.160
I I actually think that Carriage House was also Golden Valley.
00:26:42.400 --> 00:26:43.039
I think you're right.
00:26:43.599 --> 00:26:45.200
And right behind it was the Nature Center.
00:26:45.359 --> 00:26:45.920
My sister, okay.
00:26:46.079 --> 00:26:48.799
So my sister, sister dearest, Sister Christian Michelle.
00:26:49.039 --> 00:26:49.920
Is she walking yet?
00:26:50.079 --> 00:26:52.960
I need the public needs to know the stool.
00:26:53.680 --> 00:26:54.000
Yes.
00:26:54.319 --> 00:26:57.119
We should have been updating Sister Tibia broken.
00:26:57.599 --> 00:26:58.559
Sister, sister Christian.
00:26:58.880 --> 00:26:59.279
What's up?
00:26:59.359 --> 00:27:01.039
You need a sister Christian report.
00:27:01.359 --> 00:27:05.200
Sister straight leg Christian Michelle Beaudre report.
00:27:05.359 --> 00:27:11.279
She is walking and she can walk with a cane, and she'd been getting around without a cane for a lot of it.
00:27:11.440 --> 00:27:15.119
So we're happy to say she's moving well.
00:27:15.599 --> 00:27:19.920
She's going up and down stairs with her feet, not her butt, and she's good.
00:27:20.079 --> 00:27:20.559
She good.
00:27:20.880 --> 00:27:24.160
But she lives over by that pond on the other side of Budget.
00:27:25.759 --> 00:27:27.519
Right by, and they can that's St.
00:27:27.759 --> 00:27:28.480
Louis Park.
00:27:28.799 --> 00:27:29.759
Makes no sense to me.
00:27:29.920 --> 00:27:30.559
Makes no sense.
00:27:30.799 --> 00:27:39.759
But it was because of the I want to swear it was like the water system grid line or something to do with who takes care of that.
00:27:39.920 --> 00:27:41.119
So that's kind of how it does it.
00:27:41.599 --> 00:27:42.240
Now were they St.
00:27:42.319 --> 00:27:42.559
Louis?
00:27:42.799 --> 00:27:44.400
But she had to go to the Hopkins.
00:27:44.559 --> 00:27:46.079
But were they Hopkins Schools?
00:27:46.319 --> 00:27:50.079
They had to go in the Hopkins School District because of the highway and the danger of going across that.
00:27:50.400 --> 00:27:50.799
You know what?
00:27:50.880 --> 00:27:51.680
I actually have that.
00:27:51.920 --> 00:27:54.400
I technically live in New Brighton.
00:27:54.640 --> 00:27:56.160
I can throw a rock and I'm in St.
00:27:56.319 --> 00:28:01.279
Anthony, but schools, it's say not that I go to schools, but I pay taxes for the St.
00:28:01.440 --> 00:28:04.720
Anthony School District, not the not the New Brighton School District.
00:28:04.880 --> 00:28:05.519
Yeah.
00:28:06.240 --> 00:28:09.279
And funny who made these lines up.
00:28:09.440 --> 00:28:10.000
We want that.
00:28:10.160 --> 00:28:10.640
You get that.
00:28:10.720 --> 00:28:15.200
But you remember our illustrious governor going on Letterman, going, Yeah, I don't know about St.
00:28:15.279 --> 00:28:17.119
Paul, the guy who designed that was drunk.
00:28:17.359 --> 00:28:18.000
Yeah.
00:28:18.720 --> 00:28:19.359
Yep.
00:28:20.480 --> 00:28:21.519
Yeah, oh yeah.
00:28:21.759 --> 00:28:29.839
If you go back and how communities were made way back then, they started and they didn't necessarily go straight lines from each other.
00:28:30.000 --> 00:28:31.359
I want my house to face that way.
00:28:31.440 --> 00:28:38.400
And this you go over to Europe and the roads are 20 feet this way, and then it takes a slight degree turn that way and then back that way.
00:28:38.480 --> 00:28:43.279
And back when I was driving, and we had to go find places and we had to print off the maps.
00:28:43.359 --> 00:28:44.640
And you're trying to know what?
00:28:44.720 --> 00:28:48.160
Yeah, first of all, that's you're talking about 90s map quest era.
00:28:48.319 --> 00:28:49.599
We would not print out the maps.
00:28:49.759 --> 00:28:50.720
We would buy the books.
00:28:50.960 --> 00:28:52.400
Or do you remember this?
00:28:52.559 --> 00:28:57.039
I think we brought it up before, but you used to be able to go and you'd have family road trips.
00:28:57.279 --> 00:29:06.799
My dad belonged to AAA, and you'd be able to go get a trip tick, which was basically a bunch of maps cut up into pieces into a book, so that it's like it picks up the next map.
00:29:06.960 --> 00:29:16.160
And so basically they just took a map, somebody at at triple A drew a highlighter, and then cut it up into pieces so it could be a book.
00:29:16.480 --> 00:29:17.440
Yep, they did that.
00:29:17.519 --> 00:29:18.880
I remember that if you were of AAA.
00:29:19.680 --> 00:29:20.079
Yep.
00:29:20.319 --> 00:29:24.720
Or they'd at least give you, if you didn't want that, they'd give you good routes to write down.
00:29:25.119 --> 00:29:28.799
When I first started driving, various jobs of mine involved having to go to places like so.
00:29:28.880 --> 00:29:31.200
I had the big Hudson map book in my car.
00:29:31.519 --> 00:29:42.079
When I had yeah, when I had the limo business and the smaller book where you had to go, okay, now go to page 62, G62, and you're like, let's not write the next page, you gotta find that.
00:29:42.160 --> 00:29:46.160
And when you're driving and everything, we we didn't have a lot of cup folders back.
00:29:46.559 --> 00:29:56.880
I honestly it is it's an old person thing, but it is even for me that lived through it, I just find it I get anxious thinking, but if I'm running late, I can't call and tell them.
00:29:57.039 --> 00:29:59.119
They're gonna be sitting there wondering, where are they?
00:29:59.279 --> 00:30:01.440
And I'm like, Yeah, that's what life was like.
00:30:01.680 --> 00:30:02.319
And you waited.
00:30:03.200 --> 00:30:06.000
You waited, and that was it.
00:30:06.799 --> 00:30:10.480
On street signs or highway signs, at the very top, there's a number.
00:30:10.720 --> 00:30:11.119
Yes.
00:30:11.519 --> 00:30:13.119
So this is exit, whatever.
00:30:13.519 --> 00:30:16.720
So my daughter, I'll give a shout out to my darling daughter, Georgia.
00:30:16.799 --> 00:30:17.039
Yep.
00:30:17.200 --> 00:30:19.440
Um, she's like, Okay, I'm coming out.
00:30:19.680 --> 00:30:20.160
Where am I going?
00:30:20.240 --> 00:30:22.960
I'm coming up and it's Route 103C.
00:30:23.039 --> 00:30:25.200
I'm like, what are the goddamn words below it?
00:30:25.359 --> 00:30:27.440
Yeah, it's Geneva Street or it's Robert.
00:30:27.680 --> 00:30:28.799
I'm like, okay, go by that.
00:30:29.519 --> 00:30:31.519
We all grew up reading the street names.
00:30:31.599 --> 00:30:33.200
Yeah, you're going by the numbers on top.
00:30:33.359 --> 00:30:34.319
That's how we were taught.
00:30:34.400 --> 00:30:34.559
Yeah.
00:30:34.720 --> 00:30:47.599
So I will tell you this: if you are driving and you are co-piloting with your significant other, I find it, and then you're not in your town, I find it helpful to communicate from the GPS.
00:30:47.839 --> 00:30:49.759
Take exit seven, right?
00:30:50.000 --> 00:30:53.599
Because it's a lot easier if you're not familiar than than Johnsonville Highway.
00:30:53.759 --> 00:30:55.279
It's like highways, okay, exit seven.
00:30:55.359 --> 00:30:56.480
Okay, I see exit seven, right?
00:30:56.559 --> 00:31:00.000
Because it'll be like Johnsonville West, Johnsonville East, Johnsonville North.
00:31:00.079 --> 00:31:06.799
But the number is so I realize in a communication in your town, but I think outside of your town, I think you're better off.
00:31:07.200 --> 00:31:10.079
I get that too, because right here on it needs to be.
00:31:11.039 --> 00:31:15.599
I I thought of something that I've seen before for your your gal's hometown.
00:31:15.759 --> 00:31:20.720
Apparently in Colorado, Mario Marker 420 now says 419 and a half.
00:31:21.920 --> 00:31:25.680
Because Mario Marker 420 keeps getting stolen.
00:31:27.039 --> 00:31:27.599
Interesting.
00:31:27.759 --> 00:31:28.160
Interesting.
00:31:28.319 --> 00:31:28.880
Yeah, I bet.
00:31:29.680 --> 00:31:39.599
I was never, I don't think you did, but there were folks when we were growing up who having a street sign of some kind stolen and put up on your bedroom wall was a sign of something.
00:31:39.680 --> 00:31:41.839
I and if it had something to do with your name.
00:31:42.000 --> 00:31:42.480
Yeah, that's right.
00:31:42.640 --> 00:31:48.000
I had someone give me somewhere along the line, somebody gave me uh street signs at Hammer Street.
00:31:48.240 --> 00:31:49.519
Oh, that's cool.
00:31:49.759 --> 00:31:52.400
Yeah, and then some other funny ones.
00:31:52.559 --> 00:31:53.759
But yeah, I don't know.
00:31:53.920 --> 00:31:56.799
I Mike, Mike Hammer.
00:31:57.200 --> 00:31:57.759
We had fun.
00:31:58.000 --> 00:32:02.559
When are you uh this is our first intercontinental inner America?
00:32:02.720 --> 00:32:05.200
This is our first remote, I don't know, far away.
00:32:05.359 --> 00:32:07.759
I don't know how to describe it, but it's the first.
00:32:08.640 --> 00:32:12.559
I'm here and you're there, and that makes it our time, Mr.
00:32:12.720 --> 00:32:13.200
Hond.
00:32:13.359 --> 00:32:20.319
A lot of spacoli references came out here, but the yeah, the it worked well, we'll do it every time we're somewhere else.
00:32:20.480 --> 00:32:28.079
But no, it um it was fun to visit you while you're on your bench there, and I'm on my bench here.
00:32:28.240 --> 00:32:30.960
Yep, as Julian Roberts was telling Elmo.
00:32:31.200 --> 00:32:36.960
If I'm here and then you're there, and then I come over there, then we're both here.
00:32:37.680 --> 00:32:39.039
But I'll get out of the phone.
00:32:40.480 --> 00:32:41.279
Back to that.
00:32:41.440 --> 00:32:42.880
Back to that, dude.
00:32:42.960 --> 00:32:44.480
Are you in the Hate Ashbury district?
00:32:44.559 --> 00:32:46.640
Because you just blew my mind, man.
00:32:47.519 --> 00:32:52.400
We that circles back to your conversation earlier about the donut shop and the cops.
00:32:52.480 --> 00:32:55.519
But maybe we leave it at that and we pick it up another time.
00:32:55.599 --> 00:33:01.440
And anybody, yeah, anybody that has any remembrance of some of the other sponsors of the city.
00:33:01.920 --> 00:33:02.480
I want to know, dude.
00:33:02.559 --> 00:33:10.720
It's either Cedar Manor or Perk and Ole or Aquila or Peter Hobart have it, or the Lions League, Skippy Field, all that crap.
00:33:10.960 --> 00:33:11.920
Cool, all that crap.
00:33:12.000 --> 00:33:25.440
Well, of course, Carlos and Hammer out watching all the world go by now, underneath the hazy sky now.
00:33:26.240 --> 00:33:30.000
Got my ticket for the long ride.
00:33:30.960 --> 00:33:39.599
Yeah, from my park bench perspective, got that wide eyed view on light.
00:33:40.799 --> 00:33:47.200
My park bench perspective, helping me to win the fight.
