PADRES POSTCAST: ACTION JACKSON! Merrill Homers for 3rd Straight Game as Padres Edge Brewers 3-2

Jackson Merrill delivered another massive moment, Casey Mize was outstanding in his Petco Park debut, and the San Diego Padres bullpen slammed the door in a playoff-intensity 3-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers — the team that entered the night with the best record in baseball.

Merrill launched a 431-foot, two-run home run in the seventh inning to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 Padres lead. It was another huge swing for one of San Diego’s biggest stars — and Merrill has now homered in THREE STRAIGHT GAMES.

Ty France provided the Padres' other run with a solo homer in the second and later singled ahead of Merrill's game-winning blast.

Meanwhile, Casey Mize delivered in his Padres home debut, working six strong innings and allowing just two runs on five hits with six strikeouts. After Christian Yelich's two-run homer in the second, Mize kept one of baseball's best teams off the scoreboard the rest of his night.

Then the Padres' bullpen took over — again.

Yuki Matsui. Adrián Morejon. Mason Miller.

Three innings. One hit. ZERO RUNS.

Morejon got a huge double play in the eighth, and Mason “The Reaper” Miller closed it in the ninth for his 29th save, with Freddy Fermin throwing out pinch-runner Brandon Lockridge trying to steal second to END THE GAME with Christian Yelich at the plate.

This felt like October baseball at a rocking Petco Park.

The Brewers came in 74-44 with MLB's best record, and with both the Phillies and Diamondbacks winning, San Diego couldn't afford to give away ground. The Padres didn't gain anything in the race — but they kept pace by beating the best team in baseball.

This is what playoff baseball feels like — and the Padres answered the bell.
