9
00:01:12.200 --> 00:01:17.879
it is time for this week's episode
of the Adventures of Bill Lance. The
10
00:01:18.000 --> 00:01:23.879
original air date October the twelfth,
nineteen forty seven, and the title is
11
00:01:23.200 --> 00:01:37.439
Death Wears a New Dress. The
American Broadcasting Company challenges you to a startling
12
00:01:37.560 --> 00:01:47.280
puzzle in crime, The Adventures of
Bill Lance, starring General Lord with Alan
13
00:01:47.400 --> 00:02:04.000
mcnairra's but that's w Ulyssie Higgins.
I'm their Lands. I'm primarily a composer,
14
00:02:04.319 --> 00:02:07.120
also a criminologist. That's it's more
accurate to call me a student of
15
00:02:07.240 --> 00:02:10.840
human nature. You know. I
believe that crime is the result of a
16
00:02:10.879 --> 00:02:15.000
delinquent society, that the criminal mind
is a sick mind, and that the
17
00:02:15.000 --> 00:02:20.360
symptoms of that sickness are always apparent
in the behavior of the criminal. Therefore,
18
00:02:20.479 --> 00:02:23.240
if you would expose a criminal,
look for fingerprints on the doorknob,
19
00:02:23.919 --> 00:02:28.560
but also look for imprints on the
human mind. In short, human emotions
20
00:02:28.560 --> 00:02:40.039
of my clues. Oh, yes, I also played the piano. Oh.
21
00:02:40.120 --> 00:02:44.879
You can say a lot of things
that way. Sometimes it's an accompaniment
22
00:02:44.879 --> 00:02:49.759
to thinking, particularly when you're trying
to unravel some of the tangles of human
23
00:02:49.800 --> 00:02:53.000
behavior, helping to bring some kind
of order into the chaos which people seem
24
00:02:53.039 --> 00:02:58.719
to create so easily. Why,
for instance, when when everybody was so
25
00:02:58.800 --> 00:03:02.120
curious, if not worrious, about
a new friend and fashions, should death
26
00:03:02.199 --> 00:03:07.919
choose to wear a new dress?
Never can tell how swiftly a familiar human
27
00:03:07.960 --> 00:03:15.520
problem can build into a tragic snarl
of emotions. A matter of fact,
28
00:03:15.120 --> 00:03:19.319
even my friend, Professor Ulysses Higgins, seemed to be building himself up to
29
00:03:19.439 --> 00:03:23.400
a passionate fury. And I had
all started and just because I felt like
30
00:03:23.439 --> 00:03:28.719
going a little work on my concerto
M G cl two plus c O H
31
00:03:28.840 --> 00:03:32.840
two equals m G o H two. Plush no no, no, no

00:03:32.840 --> 00:03:37.280

man. Huh. Yes, yes,
33
00:03:37.719 --> 00:03:40.400
perhaps if I modulate into F sharp
in this phrase. But if he had
34
00:03:40.439 --> 00:03:46.240
calcium had druck side to magnusium,
clarade your pacificate the magnesium as a hydrate.
35
00:03:46.319 --> 00:03:50.759
Maybe a progression of chords ending with
the diminished seven m zcl two plus
36
00:03:50.840 --> 00:03:55.159
c A o H two equals m
g oh. Oh, you're speaking of
37
00:03:55.199 --> 00:04:02.360
meumussis. I'm merely trying to quat
chemical campaigns in my mind what's left in
38
00:04:02.400 --> 00:04:09.120
my mind? But that's internal noise. You're making noise, my dear professor.
39
00:04:09.360 --> 00:04:13.400
What strikes you a tin here as
noise? Maybe heavenly music to a
40
00:04:13.479 --> 00:04:16.199
more discriminating order. Even if your
proposition with true your penis is false,
41
00:04:16.839 --> 00:04:21.319
you cannot call that piano chinkering music. Touche, let's argue the point.
42
00:04:21.439 --> 00:04:27.879
Huh saved by the bell shall Yeah, I wouldn't dream of taking you away
43
00:04:27.920 --> 00:04:35.199
from your magnesium and hydrates. Hello, oh, hello, I don't know
44
00:04:35.240 --> 00:04:39.839
whether you remember. You didn't start
by saying guess who, So it must
45
00:04:39.839 --> 00:04:45.079
be somebody alike. June Adams June
Darling, it's been over a year.
46
00:04:45.120 --> 00:04:53.759
Where have you been? Uh still
infection? I know, yeah, I
47
00:04:54.160 --> 00:04:59.600
couldn't think of a nice figure for
it. It happens too where yo,
48
00:05:00.279 --> 00:05:05.920
very she she, I feel you're
always different from what you always would give
49
00:05:05.959 --> 00:05:11.120
me good at Oh? Yes,
sometimes I talk too much for my own
50
00:05:11.199 --> 00:05:14.759
good. Oh where are you living? Now? I can ride over?
51
00:05:15.279 --> 00:05:20.560
I can't tomorrow? Then tomorrow,
Oh good, I'll see you there.
52
00:05:21.160 --> 00:05:25.560
I don't think why not. I've
been wanting to get a look at the
53
00:05:25.600 --> 00:05:38.079
new style, to give every woman's
figure a chance. Kind of nights.
54
00:05:42.800 --> 00:05:46.120
There has been much too much hype
of conversation about the new friends and miligious
55
00:05:46.160 --> 00:05:51.120
fashions. As soon as I mean, the world can stand still. No,
56
00:05:51.800 --> 00:05:59.040
as we change within, we must
change without without talking about clothes without
57
00:05:59.120 --> 00:06:04.319
clothes. But I ari look to
the future, and in the future I
58
00:06:04.439 --> 00:06:09.319
see the past, and in both
I see today's woman, the neat this
59
00:06:09.399 --> 00:06:12.360
trick of a week. I've very
told fortunes before you got into this racket.
60
00:06:12.800 --> 00:06:19.759
So now with me, today's woman
on our ari. Pull yourself together.
61
00:06:23.680 --> 00:06:28.759
First, the cocoon, the new
swelt, the silhouette in smooth black
62
00:06:28.879 --> 00:06:33.720
wood, no accentuations of shoulders,
no centuations of the waistline, in fact,
63
00:06:33.959 --> 00:06:43.600
no situations at all, in fact
no good Where next? Next the
64
00:06:43.759 --> 00:06:49.720
triangle in shimmering red velvet with gracefully
sloped shoulders, swinging simply but dramatically to
65
00:06:49.920 --> 00:06:57.160
the low and white bluck hen it
must swing and swing loves winglow sweet cherrier.
66
00:06:58.519 --> 00:07:04.480
Yes, out and no dramatic file. The watch with the diminished shoulders,
67
00:07:04.600 --> 00:07:09.319
the petted boozoom, the rounded hip
line, and the pinched weight.
68
00:07:09.680 --> 00:07:12.959
Hey, yes, now that that's
more like that reminds me of my grandmother.
69
00:07:13.120 --> 00:07:15.879
It does, but not tell Joan
man, who is that John modeling
70
00:07:15.920 --> 00:07:19.480
that one? Yes? And she
doesn't look so good? That good?
71
00:07:19.600 --> 00:07:26.839
Hello, Joan? Yeah, look
John, put me may I could throw
72
00:07:26.879 --> 00:07:30.879
place, mister John. What is
happening? What is it? Miss Adams?
73
00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:43.759
Joan, she can't hear you are
Ray Jones dead? I found something
74
00:07:43.839 --> 00:07:47.360
there. I want to introduce you
to miss Sandra Weston. Come in,
75
00:07:47.439 --> 00:07:53.839
Miss Weston. You did find something, professor, Yes, yes you,
76
00:07:55.879 --> 00:08:00.319
hello, miss Weston. Hello,
mister land Why why don't you the cool,
77
00:08:01.319 --> 00:08:05.600
the smelt silhouette and smooth black wool? Yes, so glad? Why
78
00:08:05.639 --> 00:08:09.319
didn't you tell me that miss Adams
was ill when she came in today.
79
00:08:09.399 --> 00:08:11.079
But Henri, I didn't know she
was there. I don't she was upset,
80
00:08:11.160 --> 00:08:13.600
but she came perfectly. Well,
I'll tell you why she was upset.
81
00:08:16.160 --> 00:08:20.120
Were you close friends? We shared
a dressing room, We liked each
82
00:08:20.160 --> 00:08:24.560
other. That's what you mean.
I can't understand what? No, neither
83
00:08:24.639 --> 00:08:28.920
can I. I got your message, and oh am I interrupting something private,
84
00:08:30.040 --> 00:08:33.960
I inspected. Thanks for dropping by, Inspects Meet Inspector Holland blood Harm
85
00:08:35.320 --> 00:08:39.559
Sandraw Weston. Hello. Wow,
you know Professor Higgins. Of course,
86
00:08:39.679 --> 00:08:43.120
yeah, I know him. I
feel exactly the same words. This is
87
00:08:43.159 --> 00:08:48.080
not a matter for watched the gag
lance. I heard a girl by the
88
00:08:48.200 --> 00:08:50.320
name of Joan Adams, one of
Henry's models, died here just a few
89
00:08:50.360 --> 00:08:54.879
minutes ago. Ah, she collapsed
in the salon. Sounds like a job
90
00:08:54.919 --> 00:08:56.159
for a doctor, not me.
Hadn't I do? It might be in
91
00:08:56.200 --> 00:09:00.919
your territory, Inspector, Yeah,
I came down here to see Joan Adam
92
00:09:00.919 --> 00:09:03.759
instead or alive. No jokes,
I knew Joan. I saw it die.
93
00:09:05.039 --> 00:09:07.080
Okay, I'm sorry, wells you
called me last night. She was
94
00:09:07.080 --> 00:09:11.559
in trouble. What kind that's what
I came here to find out what trouble
95
00:09:11.679 --> 00:09:16.200
caught up with the first. You
think it's maybe Stewart's side stars side.
96
00:09:16.600 --> 00:09:18.200
Yes, I know, miss Weston, you're thinking the same thing I am.
97
00:09:18.840 --> 00:09:24.120
Joan. Wasn't that kind of a
girl? Huh? And maybe murder?
98
00:09:24.559 --> 00:09:26.960
Maybe murder? Oh no, no, no, no, I'm postable.
99
00:09:28.120 --> 00:09:31.759
How do you know it wasn't murder? Henry? How do Randall inspector?
100
00:09:31.320 --> 00:09:35.759
This is definitely his? Yes,
and naturally that changes everything, not
101
00:09:37.000 --> 00:09:39.399
for me? What have you got
besides theories? Lance bouts of asprint a
102
00:09:39.440 --> 00:09:45.080
bottle of vitamin pills here on him
on Joan's dressing table. I guess I
103
00:09:45.200 --> 00:09:46.200
might as wont to take them down. I'll have them an alives. Let
104
00:09:46.240 --> 00:09:48.679
me know what you're find sure.
I wouldn't want you to waste your time.
105
00:09:50.080 --> 00:09:52.159
I'll give you a buzz too,
Henry, in case you're interested me.
106
00:09:54.080 --> 00:10:13.799
What is it myth? I'm ruined
already anyway? Oh your listens?
107
00:10:13.320 --> 00:10:18.639
Can you answer that place? No? No? Okay, okay, that's
108
00:10:18.720 --> 00:10:24.639
when we're getting you to stop playing
it is hello? Hello Lass. Oh
109
00:10:24.720 --> 00:10:26.919
you guess Brent, that girl didn't
want to live. She took poison.
110
00:10:28.279 --> 00:10:33.240
Michael Best aid, there's no proof
she took it, inspector didn't. Analysis
111
00:10:33.279 --> 00:10:35.480
of the stomming content shows that you
eat lunch, had a couple of cocktails
112
00:10:35.519 --> 00:10:39.679
and ask them in the vitamin pill
without getting the ideas the bottom of askepirin
113
00:10:39.759 --> 00:10:43.799
and the vitamin fills you file showed
not wonder where she got the cocktails lest
114
00:10:43.840 --> 00:10:48.600
the last you yourself told me he
was in some kind of trouble or whatever
115
00:10:48.679 --> 00:10:50.879
it was. She couldn't face it. Okay, thanks for letting me know.
116
00:10:52.279 --> 00:10:58.799
Goodbye, m Lake for company.
Never too late for this place.
117
00:10:58.039 --> 00:11:05.519
Don't don't bother number. I'll get
it. You have the wrong appostments.
118
00:11:05.919 --> 00:11:11.080
Everything's wrong, even this supartment.
I can't help it. Good thing.
119
00:11:11.240 --> 00:11:15.480
Wait a minute, uses isn't it
sure it's George King Cave? Oh?
120
00:11:15.600 --> 00:11:18.759
This is then this man? Here
was Jess Kinning. Who is this?
121
00:11:20.039 --> 00:11:24.879
Bill Joy's King Katie the jeweler in
Beverly Hills long mention this? Oh can
122
00:11:24.960 --> 00:11:28.159
I please come in and sit down? Yeah? You're better before you fall
123
00:11:28.240 --> 00:11:33.360
down? Thank you all? Was
my ginner George. Wait a minute,
124
00:11:33.360 --> 00:11:41.039
here's the chair. He feels good? What is the chin? Sumoha?
125
00:11:41.240 --> 00:11:45.559
Oh? Bill? Bill Bill A
Bill All, Bill All, Bill All,
126
00:11:45.679 --> 00:11:48.279
Bill All. That's me Bill.
Bill. I don't know how glad
127
00:11:48.320 --> 00:11:52.720
I am to see you. Bill, I just hard to see you.
128
00:11:52.639 --> 00:11:56.799
You were there. You you'll understand, of course. Now give me a
129
00:11:56.879 --> 00:12:01.840
break, Joyce talking beginning. Huh, Bill, I've started rust from the
130
00:12:01.279 --> 00:12:07.960
very beginning. That's the place.
Yeah. Who is that man over there
131
00:12:09.200 --> 00:12:13.679
is a corner? Nobody? He
just lives here. Oh well, right,
132
00:12:13.759 --> 00:12:18.600
iven, b I've started right from
the very beginning. You see down,
133
00:12:18.799 --> 00:12:24.759
look at me. You that's come
on, come on, George.
134
00:12:24.799 --> 00:12:30.639
Why did you coming here? Oh
look Bill? You saw everything anybody's telling
135
00:12:30.679 --> 00:12:37.360
me? Oh Bill, Bill saw
my father. Poor girl, Bill,
136
00:12:39.440 --> 00:12:41.799
I didn't know. He's delirious.
And I tell you list he's given time.
137
00:12:43.360 --> 00:12:46.240
Hey Bill, we don't know.
Bruce Randolph, oh sure, lives
138
00:12:46.279 --> 00:12:50.960
in Bella, lots of money.
One of my very best customers bought a
139
00:12:50.000 --> 00:12:54.720
bracelest who his wife's birthday a couple
of months ago, diamonds and rubies,
140
00:12:56.320 --> 00:13:00.559
red ones, real thing too.
And then then a couple of days ago,
141
00:13:01.240 --> 00:13:07.320
missus Randolph comes in buying something so
and actually I asked how she liked
142
00:13:07.360 --> 00:13:13.600
the bracelet. You know what she
said what bracelet? You see what I
143
00:13:13.679 --> 00:13:16.840
mean? They've shot people? But
lessing that, Jordan, I know,
144
00:13:16.039 --> 00:13:22.559
Bill, I'm all good. I
started all you see, mister Randal was
145
00:13:22.600 --> 00:13:31.399
a little extra currc extra curric he
played around with Joan Adam. How did
146
00:13:31.440 --> 00:13:35.960
you know? You just told me? Oh, I knew you would understand,
147
00:13:35.080 --> 00:13:39.120
Bill, Bill bro I feel better. I'm glad. I guess I'll
148
00:13:39.200 --> 00:13:43.840
gone on. You can make it. I got his, didn't I?
149
00:13:46.399 --> 00:13:50.360
Bill? I send him glad.
I had his nice little talk with you.
150
00:13:52.240 --> 00:13:56.360
That man's looking at me, and
watch out, Bill, he's got
151
00:13:56.519 --> 00:14:03.399
any Oh my, there goes the
forerunner of a beautiful hangover. How can
152
00:14:03.440 --> 00:14:07.600
you waste your time on a drunken
pool like that? Who wasted time?
153
00:14:07.159 --> 00:14:09.440
I don't start building a case on
a lot of idol? Talk about a
154
00:14:09.480 --> 00:14:13.639
bracelet? He didn't even know who
mister Randolph gave it to. But I
155
00:14:13.799 --> 00:14:18.440
do, evil eye look diamonds and
rubies, real thing? Where did you
156
00:14:18.480 --> 00:14:22.279
get that bracelet? Off? Jones
Race? What are you gonna do?
157
00:14:22.799 --> 00:14:26.240
That's I'll give it a mister Randolph
so he can give it to missus Randolph
158
00:14:26.519 --> 00:14:45.679
for her next birthday d d DA, So long, ulysses? Were you
159
00:14:45.799 --> 00:14:50.519
going so earlier, I have a
date with a cocoon? What oh,
160
00:14:50.399 --> 00:14:54.679
why she hadn't been for me?
You wouldn't even know that there was a
161
00:14:54.799 --> 00:15:01.919
Sandra Weston after all, I found
me? Why of fessive? I didn't
162
00:15:01.960 --> 00:15:05.159
know your kid? Why didn't you
say something? Had a chance to speak
163
00:15:05.200 --> 00:15:07.159
to you about it? You?
I'll tell you what I'll do. I'll
164
00:15:07.159 --> 00:15:20.519
put in a good word for you. Oh Sandra and a microphones under the
165
00:15:20.559 --> 00:15:26.440
table. Nobody's even looking this way. You can I'll speak freely. What
166
00:15:26.559 --> 00:15:30.440
do you want to know? Just
what do you think of the broken down
167
00:15:30.559 --> 00:15:35.200
hemline and the droopie skirt? That
isn't a fair question. I make a
168
00:15:35.279 --> 00:15:39.559
living showing how fashions change, honey, this is no change of the revolution.
169
00:15:39.759 --> 00:15:41.279
That doesn't excite to me. I've
been through too many of them at
170
00:15:41.320 --> 00:15:43.879
antrays. Do you want to give
me a pension? I've been a too
171
00:15:43.919 --> 00:15:46.919
long. You think I'm one of
the sixtures. Maybe anytime you want to
172
00:15:46.919 --> 00:15:50.440
break your contract, I could be
interesting, a nice speech, miss to
173
00:15:50.519 --> 00:15:54.519
learn, But you're not in addressing
this. When you didn't ask me to
174
00:15:54.600 --> 00:15:58.639
lunch to just to talk shop?
Did you? Would you say? Joan
175
00:15:58.679 --> 00:16:02.600
Adams is shop talking. I can't
get Joan out of my mind, as
176
00:16:03.240 --> 00:16:07.000
I've got somebody else in my mind. Now, No tell her name,
177
00:16:07.120 --> 00:16:14.200
Randolph. Oh you know very little. Well, then I suppose there's no
178
00:16:14.279 --> 00:16:17.279
reason for my trying to cover up
with Joan and wad. Yeah, I
179
00:16:17.360 --> 00:16:19.399
wondered why you didn't say anything.
What Joan did was her own affair.
180
00:16:21.120 --> 00:16:26.879
Now, well why stodn't any ugly
godsam? Yeah, I was. Joan
181
00:16:26.000 --> 00:16:30.600
really worried about yesterday morning Missus Randolph
called her and actually head lunch. Oh
182
00:16:30.759 --> 00:16:34.039
that explained the cocksail. Well,
she had a couple of drinks from Missus
183
00:16:34.080 --> 00:16:37.000
Randolph. That's all. So tell
you how the meeting turned off. She
184
00:16:37.080 --> 00:16:40.639
got back at the shop before I
did. But when I thought it grow
185
00:16:40.639 --> 00:16:44.279
into a dressing room, I heard
her calling with someone recognize the boys,
186
00:16:45.440 --> 00:16:48.879
Bruce right now. But that doesn't
prove anything, doesn't. Yes, it
187
00:16:48.960 --> 00:16:55.559
does prove something very important, Bruce. How lucky I am lucky? Yeah?
188
00:16:56.600 --> 00:17:00.000
All this hadn't happened, I wouldn't
have met you, Oh haven't.
189
00:17:00.720 --> 00:17:04.079
I'm lucky Hill. Now you've made
me an honest man, I don't have
190
00:17:04.160 --> 00:17:07.519
to play detective anymore. Just make
a date with you tonight. Well,
191
00:17:07.599 --> 00:17:12.759
that's a like concept can break that
might lead to a complication. I can
192
00:17:12.799 --> 00:17:15.960
be so discreet, but it's a
friend with you. No, that even
193
00:17:17.000 --> 00:17:23.400
makes it easier? Who is it? Ulysses? Well, what do you
194
00:17:23.480 --> 00:17:27.519
know? When did you make the
dates? He called us before you picked
195
00:17:27.559 --> 00:17:32.559
me up? Where the two timing? Double coat and second thought? More
196
00:17:32.640 --> 00:17:34.319
power to him? Right now he
and I have been shopping to do in
197
00:17:34.400 --> 00:17:45.839
Beverly Hills. Man, I would
be only too willing to help you,
198
00:17:45.000 --> 00:17:48.920
but of course it is completely unnecessary. Now is it all right? Oh?
199
00:17:49.079 --> 00:17:52.440
I have talked with the inspector.
I learned it is very sad.
200
00:17:52.720 --> 00:17:59.039
O girl destroyed herself. I wonder
why? Who knows? There's so many
201
00:17:59.160 --> 00:18:03.720
reasons why one can despair? Of
course I didn't know poor John very well.
202
00:18:03.279 --> 00:18:06.920
Well, well enough, she had
been with me only a few months.
203
00:18:07.359 --> 00:18:10.079
But it does not mean that I
don't suffer as though she had been
204
00:18:10.160 --> 00:18:12.519
with me for years. No,
of course. Incidentally, did you know
205
00:18:12.599 --> 00:18:18.200
that Bruce Randolph came to talk to
Jones just before Why? Why? He's
206
00:18:18.240 --> 00:18:22.759
a very old and valid pat on
my son. He was seeing leaving jones
207
00:18:22.880 --> 00:18:27.119
dressing room just before the fashion show
I'm possible. She last, May I
208
00:18:27.240 --> 00:18:32.799
give you some advice? What has
been has been beginn into the past.
209
00:18:32.880 --> 00:18:44.599
Will do nobody any good? Well? Bill wanted to apologize. I must
210
00:18:44.599 --> 00:18:47.160
have been pretty far gone last night
to bar Jeanne on you that way.
211
00:18:47.279 --> 00:18:51.039
Don't apologized, George, you were
very cute and mister Kinkad you took an
212
00:18:51.039 --> 00:18:55.039
intense disclike to me. Oh were
you there? I don't remember you and
213
00:18:55.279 --> 00:18:56.920
must have been a mass How are
you talking of? Told us a very
214
00:18:56.960 --> 00:19:00.039
sad story about a birthday and a
bracelet. Dunk a nonsense, Bill,
215
00:19:00.119 --> 00:19:04.000
dunk a nonsense. H do me
your favor? Will you together? Oh,
216
00:19:04.079 --> 00:19:06.799
but there are a couple of things
I'd like to ask you about.
217
00:19:06.799 --> 00:19:11.079
Bruce Randolph. Bill, mister Randolph
has been a very good customer of mine
218
00:19:11.119 --> 00:19:15.640
for years. What I told you
should ever get out? I'm a dead
219
00:19:15.759 --> 00:19:26.319
duck. Bill. Why don't you
just give up and admit that you made
220
00:19:26.319 --> 00:19:30.000
a mistake. Oh, I know
what's on your mind, but there's nothing
221
00:19:30.079 --> 00:19:33.599
to it. And if you won't
listen to me, will listen to the
222
00:19:33.680 --> 00:19:38.240
others. Inspector Harland Armory, you
can carry I've listened to them. Well,
223
00:19:38.240 --> 00:19:41.880
I can't see I haven't tried.
Would you mind dropping me off here?
224
00:19:42.480 --> 00:19:47.240
I have more important things to do. Okay, you're listening. I
225
00:19:47.279 --> 00:19:51.440
wouldn't want to break your dates and
anyway, you're not interested in what Missus
226
00:19:51.519 --> 00:19:56.039
Randolph may have to say. Missus
Randolph, No, I'm not well.
227
00:19:56.160 --> 00:20:00.559
On the second thought, I guess
I do have time after stop kidding for
228
00:20:00.640 --> 00:20:02.799
Fethy. You know in the end
you always come along for the ride.
229
00:20:14.960 --> 00:20:18.519
Cozy little shack, isn't it very
very? It is very very I always
230
00:20:18.559 --> 00:20:22.279
did think that that twenty four rooms
wasn't live Oh, I don't know.
231
00:20:23.200 --> 00:20:26.240
In a tine she could turn this
living room into a nice skating rink.
232
00:20:27.640 --> 00:20:32.400
Yes you wish to see me,
Oh, Missus Randolph. My name is
233
00:20:32.400 --> 00:20:37.400
Bill Lance. This is my friend, Professor Higgins. Oh was it something
234
00:20:37.480 --> 00:20:40.160
connected with the university. No,
no, Missus land, I am not
235
00:20:40.240 --> 00:20:44.000
here in my official capacity. But
my butler said you had an appointment with
236
00:20:44.160 --> 00:20:47.319
me. I don't remember making anything. Oh you didn't. Actually, I
237
00:20:47.640 --> 00:20:49.240
took the liberty of coming here to
ask you a few questions about a friend
238
00:20:49.240 --> 00:20:55.920
of mine. Oh, Joan Adams. Joan Adams, I'm sorry, I
239
00:20:56.000 --> 00:20:59.880
don't understand. Well, she was
a very close friend of your husband's.
240
00:21:00.599 --> 00:21:04.440
That's subtle identifying for you. Who
are you, mister Lane? Don't you
241
00:21:04.680 --> 00:21:11.279
know ulysses if Missus Randolph, I
thought you'd appreciate my coming to see you
242
00:21:11.359 --> 00:21:15.960
before the police do police, mister
Randolph was rather deeply involved with miss Adams.
243
00:21:17.519 --> 00:21:22.440
Yes, sorry, I'm aware of
that. Perhaps you don't realize how
244
00:21:22.519 --> 00:21:26.519
deeply. But what has that to
do with the police. Johan Adams died
245
00:21:26.960 --> 00:21:32.920
yesterday afternoon. I'm sorry she was
murdered. Your husband happened to be in
246
00:21:32.960 --> 00:21:36.440
her dressing room at Henri's yesterday afternoon. There was an argument. He left
247
00:21:36.480 --> 00:21:41.200
suddenly and angrily, and almost immediately
afterwards, Joan collapsed. She died of
248
00:21:41.960 --> 00:21:45.880
poison. Poison Bruce I was the
quarrel about how fared he committed himself.
249
00:21:45.920 --> 00:21:48.960
But he couldn't have done it.
She took the poison herself. Oh no,
250
00:21:49.039 --> 00:21:52.960
Missus Randolph, I knew Joan Adams
may have been foolish, but she
251
00:21:53.039 --> 00:21:56.880
never ran away. What did she
have to gain by killing herself? But
252
00:21:57.039 --> 00:22:00.440
her husband was in a real jam. He wasn't very discreet. You though
253
00:22:02.079 --> 00:22:06.200
all our reason knew about him and
Joan. Mister Lane, I'm going to
254
00:22:06.279 --> 00:22:10.319
tell you something you don't know.
I had luncheon with Joan Adams just to
255
00:22:10.960 --> 00:22:15.400
please uses. I've never had any
illusions about my husband, but I love
256
00:22:15.480 --> 00:22:22.039
him, so I accepted his romantic
indulgences. I've even felt sorry for some
257
00:22:22.160 --> 00:22:26.000
of the girls, especially when they
took him too seriously. That's why I
258
00:22:26.160 --> 00:22:30.160
wanted to speak to Joan Adams.
You understand that, mister Lane, she
259
00:22:30.240 --> 00:22:36.359
took him too seriously. I had
to find out. She laughed at me.
260
00:22:37.839 --> 00:22:41.359
How could a young girl like that
know what what a home means?
261
00:22:41.720 --> 00:22:45.559
How could she know how a wife
feels? How could she understand it?
262
00:22:47.400 --> 00:22:52.759
You don't just give up everything that
has meaning because of a whim. You
263
00:22:52.960 --> 00:22:56.079
think my husband killed her, No, mister Lane, I was the one
264
00:22:56.079 --> 00:23:00.279
who had to get rid of her. All right, let's violent ways of
265
00:23:00.400 --> 00:23:03.759
handling that kind of a situation.
Missus random you told me the police would
266
00:23:03.759 --> 00:23:08.039
be coming here. Yes, I'm
quite willing to tell them what I've told
267
00:23:08.079 --> 00:23:14.200
you. And now, mister Lance, would you leave please? I assure
268
00:23:14.240 --> 00:23:22.400
you that I'll be here when the
police arrive. Where now I've seen everything,
269
00:23:23.079 --> 00:23:26.920
not some nerve in her body?
Why does she lead me feel like
270
00:23:26.960 --> 00:23:29.480
that? She was doing us a
favor by confession. Quite a girl.
271
00:23:30.920 --> 00:23:33.839
Somebody's got to stick around make sure
she doesn't change your mind. Well,
272
00:23:33.880 --> 00:23:37.720
goodbye, wall. Wait a minute, I've got to call Inspector Holland,
273
00:23:37.720 --> 00:23:41.160
and I've got to run and catch
Randof before he leaves his office. Why
274
00:23:41.279 --> 00:23:42.920
Randoff, don't you think he might
like to know what's happening? It's none
275
00:23:42.920 --> 00:23:45.359
of mind. Would be a word
about your date? Forget me? Oh
276
00:23:45.480 --> 00:23:48.319
no, no, you listes.
I'll guarantee that you keep your date,
277
00:23:48.440 --> 00:24:00.799
even if I have to deliver Sandra
to you personally. John Adams, No
278
00:24:02.039 --> 00:24:06.079
afraid Lance whatever gave you the idea? Anio? I ad him an other
279
00:24:06.160 --> 00:24:10.279
things, mister Randolph as bracelet,
I thought you might want it, after
280
00:24:10.359 --> 00:24:12.920
all, didn't you bias for your
wife's birthday? Where did you get there
281
00:24:14.279 --> 00:24:21.279
from Joan? After she died that
she was poisoned? So because I gave
282
00:24:21.319 --> 00:24:25.079
her that bracelet, you came here
to blackmail me? Well if you no,
283
00:24:25.400 --> 00:24:27.680
No, that isn't why I came
here. I just wanted to tell
284
00:24:27.720 --> 00:24:32.720
you that your wife had launched it
with Joan yesterday she learned about the bracelet.
285
00:24:33.400 --> 00:24:37.599
May talk about you over a couple
of drinks. I thought she'd like
286
00:24:37.720 --> 00:24:40.160
to know. Also, that your
wife has just confessed that she murdered Joan
287
00:24:41.440 --> 00:24:47.000
Lance. I'm a r don't apologize, but I've always been able to get
288
00:24:47.000 --> 00:24:49.720
away with it, always been able
to go back home, and until this
289
00:24:49.880 --> 00:24:55.559
time, this time I had lost
my head Jones dressing home yesterday afternoon.
290
00:24:56.480 --> 00:25:00.400
Yes, yes, she let me
my wife. I went a little crazy.
291
00:25:00.680 --> 00:25:03.880
Oh so now you're confessing to the
murder of John Adams. Yes,
292
00:25:03.000 --> 00:25:07.400
yes, of course, Yeah,
that's it. Well and Randolph, in
293
00:25:07.440 --> 00:25:10.000
that case, i'd high tailed out
of your house. A police are on
294
00:25:10.079 --> 00:25:30.319
their way now to pick up your
wife. Oh, spies, why did
295
00:25:30.400 --> 00:25:33.720
you do with the professor? Well, he didn't really need to stand you
296
00:25:33.839 --> 00:25:36.839
up. He was he was delayed. You were the circumstances beyond his control.
297
00:25:37.039 --> 00:25:41.359
Oh we got our murdering. Was
it really murder? Tell you all
298
00:25:41.359 --> 00:25:44.680
about it on the way out.
Oh, they going. I promise Ulysses
299
00:25:44.680 --> 00:25:56.079
would take him up. We can
always ditch him later. Well, well,
300
00:25:56.240 --> 00:26:00.519
well, miss Weston, you did
me. I hope William has explained.
301
00:26:00.799 --> 00:26:03.759
Yes he has, Professor Higgins,
you're forgiven. But that's very nice.
302
00:26:06.240 --> 00:26:10.319
It's very nice. Bill The randolphs
in the living room with Inspector Harding.
303
00:26:10.960 --> 00:26:12.519
You won't be eating us any longer. You keep your shirt, an
304
00:26:12.559 --> 00:26:15.680
old boy, we can all go
out together later. You don't mind,
305
00:26:15.720 --> 00:26:18.200
are you? Soundra? Take us
a minute it too, Come on,
306
00:26:22.920 --> 00:26:27.799
inspected. It's quite unnecessary to make
my wife endure this any longer. I've
307
00:26:27.839 --> 00:26:30.680
already told you that I did it, and I don't. Yeah, you
308
00:26:32.440 --> 00:26:36.079
know it. Just a minute,
folk, Well last, you're just in
309
00:26:36.200 --> 00:26:40.039
time to solve the solution. I
got one murder at too many. Oh,
310
00:26:40.119 --> 00:26:41.720
it's not like you to complain when
business is so good, Inspector.
311
00:26:42.119 --> 00:26:45.079
But I think we can settle us
very quickly. Elements to Randolph. Missus
312
00:26:45.119 --> 00:26:48.960
Randoph. Oh, oh yes,
I need we forgot Oh Soundra, come
313
00:26:49.000 --> 00:26:53.880
on in. You both know Soundra
Weston? Of course? No, wait
314
00:26:53.880 --> 00:26:57.440
a minute. I couldn't be mistaken. You do know one another, or
315
00:26:57.480 --> 00:27:00.599
it did once. As a matter
of fact. That's why I brought Sandra
316
00:27:00.759 --> 00:27:04.319
here to help us with our little
problem. What do you mean what she
317
00:27:04.440 --> 00:27:07.599
got to do with our list?
She knows mister and Missus Randolph better than
318
00:27:07.640 --> 00:27:11.880
we do. Perhaps she can decide
which one is telling the truth. I
319
00:27:12.799 --> 00:27:17.720
wouldn't want to take that responsibility.
Oh, just for a moment, imagine
320
00:27:17.720 --> 00:27:22.119
yourself as Joan huh O very year, think back a little while when you
321
00:27:22.200 --> 00:27:26.839
were in a very similar position,
aren't you If you're wondering how I found
322
00:27:26.880 --> 00:27:29.400
out, Well, it's pretty hard
to keep the secret around the place like
323
00:27:29.480 --> 00:27:32.960
aunt Ries, when you get expensive
gifts from the jeweler, like kin Cave.
324
00:27:33.720 --> 00:27:36.839
Mister Randolph has always been very generous
to his lady friends, hasn't he.
325
00:27:37.200 --> 00:27:40.680
You never asked me about that door. I would have told you it's
326
00:27:40.720 --> 00:27:44.119
over anyway. Don't you agree with
me that it's pretty hard to imagine Missus
327
00:27:44.160 --> 00:27:48.440
Randolph killing Joan. She didn't kill
you when you were involved with her husband.
328
00:27:48.240 --> 00:27:52.160
And when mister Randolph had a little
trouble shaking you off after it became
329
00:27:52.200 --> 00:27:55.599
interested in Joan, he didn't kill
you either. You see, they have
330
00:27:55.680 --> 00:27:57.400
all the answers. You told me
about the luncheon date with Missus Randolph,
331
00:27:57.440 --> 00:28:02.519
about hearing mister Randolph and Jones dressing
room. You knew why Joan was agitated.
332
00:28:02.599 --> 00:28:04.359
The stage was all set. Joan
had a headache, didn't she.
333
00:28:06.279 --> 00:28:10.440
You were very helpful, So you
wanted some aspirin and so inspective. Would
334
00:28:10.440 --> 00:28:14.839
you like another confession, Sandra?
Sandra, you were over, you wouldn't
335
00:28:14.839 --> 00:28:21.880
believe me. I never let anyone
else, But hey man, it seems
336
00:28:21.880 --> 00:28:26.119
to do one night, three confessions, only one score inspect The two don't
337
00:28:26.200 --> 00:28:41.920
count. At least you could have
told me neither, Sandra. Yeah,
338
00:28:41.000 --> 00:28:45.319
I wasn't too sure myself until the
Randolps were cleared. You mean they were
339
00:28:45.359 --> 00:28:48.000
cleared when they confessed. Oh?
Sure, that eliminated them. You see,
340
00:28:48.079 --> 00:28:52.160
in shielding each other, they showed
how they would behave in a crisis.
341
00:28:52.799 --> 00:28:55.720
They got a move for them right
then. But if either one of
342
00:28:55.759 --> 00:28:57.880
them had murdered Joan, they wouldn't
have left that bracelet on her arm.
343
00:28:59.519 --> 00:29:02.880
That's dazzling bit of evidence. Would
have inevitably committed one or both of them
344
00:29:02.960 --> 00:29:06.920
with a murder. Se But what
first made you think it might be?
345
00:29:07.079 --> 00:29:11.680
Send Sandra herself. She told me
she'd been with Henria a long time,
346
00:29:12.240 --> 00:29:17.759
and Henri told me Randolph had been
an old customer. She recognized his voice
347
00:29:17.759 --> 00:29:21.119
in Joan's dressing room. She called
him Bruce, and then caught herself.
348
00:29:22.160 --> 00:29:25.359
Well, once I knew that it
was comparatively easy to check up on history
349
00:29:25.400 --> 00:29:29.039
and find out more about Randolph and
Sandra, and then I had the motive.
350
00:29:29.599 --> 00:29:33.720
Yes, but Sandram, why did
it have to be sent? No
351
00:29:33.039 --> 00:29:41.720
ulysses? Underneath that solemn moustear mask
of yours is a heart just palpitating with
352
00:29:41.880 --> 00:29:53.400
romances. Too bad your dream girl
turned out to be Lucretia Borger. You
353
00:29:53.480 --> 00:29:57.200
have been listening to another in a
series of undriguing mysteries starring Gerald Morris,
354
00:29:57.240 --> 00:30:02.599
Bill Lance with Hard McNair's You Listen
Higgins the Night. Supporting cast included Cliff
355
00:30:02.599 --> 00:30:07.839
Clark as Inspector Holland, Georgie Alliss, Sandra le Unblastos Are Lauras Calvertus,
356
00:30:07.880 --> 00:30:11.680
Missus, Randolph par McVeigh as mister
Randolph Charles Calvertus Kincaid. Music composed and
357
00:30:11.759 --> 00:30:18.359
played by Rex Corry. Join us
again next week, same time, over
358
00:30:18.440 --> 00:30:21.759
most of these same ABC stations,
when we bring you another of Bill Lancer's
359
00:30:21.799 --> 00:30:30.680
strange experiences in a story titled Special
Delivery. This Bill Lance Adventure Death Revenue
360
00:30:30.799 --> 00:30:45.759
Dress was written by Barbara and Milton
Merlin and directed by Whitehauser. Now Here's
361
00:30:45.799 --> 00:30:51.559
a special program note. David Harding
steps into a hot bed of intrigue in
362
00:30:51.680 --> 00:30:55.839
the case of the pony passport paper. Don't miss David Harding counters by this
363
00:30:55.960 --> 00:31:02.039
afternoon on his same ABC station,
This is ABC, the American Broadcasting Welcome
364
00:31:02.119 --> 00:31:07.720
back. Well. I enjoyed this
one. I did think that his solution
365
00:31:07.240 --> 00:31:12.440
that if either the husband or the
wife had committed the murder, they would
366
00:31:12.440 --> 00:31:17.640
have taken the bracelet with them.
It's kind of making a big bet on
367
00:31:17.960 --> 00:31:23.599
people thinking clearly in a very emotional
situation. Criminals do make these sort of
368
00:31:23.680 --> 00:31:29.799
mistakes in real life. I think
it's tricky in fiction because you don't want
369
00:31:29.839 --> 00:31:34.720
to rely too much on your criminal
being a stupid or making a dumb mistake.
370
00:31:36.079 --> 00:31:40.799
But you also wanted to have that
realism with that criminals do make mistakes.
371
00:31:41.119 --> 00:31:44.240
But other than that, this episode
was a lot of fun. I
372
00:31:44.440 --> 00:31:51.000
continue to enjoy just the relationship between
Bill and Ulysses. And of course Howard
373
00:31:51.079 --> 00:31:56.039
mcneir is always a lot to listen
to, and this is an recurring role
374
00:31:56.200 --> 00:32:05.400
where he's able to play to the
eccentricity that so many of his characters possess.
375
00:32:05.759 --> 00:32:09.039
You know, even in the one
shots where he's playing suspects on something
376
00:32:09.160 --> 00:32:15.599
like I'll let George do it or
yours truly, Johnny Dowler. Also,
377
00:32:15.680 --> 00:32:21.240
we got to hear Leon Blasco in
something other than The Man Called X.
378
00:32:21.480 --> 00:32:23.720
That was a question you know,
Bill asked like a few months back,
379
00:32:24.079 --> 00:32:28.799
and so it is nice to be
able to illustrate that on the program.
380
00:32:29.279 --> 00:32:36.440
The idea of a criminologist using psychological
clues to solve crimes was not unheard of
381
00:32:36.599 --> 00:32:39.799
during the Golden Age or radio.
We played a series a few years back
382
00:32:39.920 --> 00:32:45.960
called The Crime Piles of Flamont.
However, I think this series is actually
383
00:32:45.240 --> 00:32:50.799
a bit more enjoyable to listen to. It's got quite a bit more charm
384
00:32:51.119 --> 00:32:54.160
and the music element works well too. All right, well now I want
385
00:32:54.200 --> 00:32:58.880
to go ahead and thank our Patreon
supporter of the day. Thank you to

9
00:01:12.200 --> 00:01:17.879
it is time for this week's episode
of the Adventures of Bill Lance. The
10
00:01:18.000 --> 00:01:23.879
original air date October the twelfth,
nineteen forty seven, and the title is
11
00:01:23.200 --> 00:01:37.439
Death Wears a New Dress. The
American Broadcasting Company challenges you to a startling
12
00:01:37.560 --> 00:01:47.280
puzzle in crime, The Adventures of
Bill Lance, starring General Lord with Alan
13
00:01:47.400 --> 00:02:04.000
mcnairra's but that's w Ulyssie Higgins.
I'm their Lands. I'm primarily a composer,
14
00:02:04.319 --> 00:02:07.120
also a criminologist. That's it's more
accurate to call me a student of
15
00:02:07.240 --> 00:02:10.840
human nature. You know. I
believe that crime is the result of a
16
00:02:10.879 --> 00:02:15.000
delinquent society, that the criminal mind
is a sick mind, and that the
17
00:02:15.000 --> 00:02:20.360
symptoms of that sickness are always apparent
in the behavior of the criminal. Therefore,
18
00:02:20.479 --> 00:02:23.240
if you would expose a criminal,
look for fingerprints on the doorknob,
19
00:02:23.919 --> 00:02:28.560
but also look for imprints on the
human mind. In short, human emotions
20
00:02:28.560 --> 00:02:40.039
of my clues. Oh, yes, I also played the piano. Oh.
21
00:02:40.120 --> 00:02:44.879
You can say a lot of things
that way. Sometimes it's an accompaniment
22
00:02:44.879 --> 00:02:49.759
to thinking, particularly when you're trying
to unravel some of the tangles of human
23
00:02:49.800 --> 00:02:53.000
behavior, helping to bring some kind
of order into the chaos which people seem
24
00:02:53.039 --> 00:02:58.719
to create so easily. Why,
for instance, when when everybody was so
25
00:02:58.800 --> 00:03:02.120
curious, if not worrious, about
a new friend and fashions, should death
26
00:03:02.199 --> 00:03:07.919
choose to wear a new dress?
Never can tell how swiftly a familiar human
27
00:03:07.960 --> 00:03:15.520
problem can build into a tragic snarl
of emotions. A matter of fact,
28
00:03:15.120 --> 00:03:19.319
even my friend, Professor Ulysses Higgins, seemed to be building himself up to
29
00:03:19.439 --> 00:03:23.400
a passionate fury. And I had
all started and just because I felt like
30
00:03:23.439 --> 00:03:28.719
going a little work on my concerto
M G cl two plus c O H
31
00:03:28.840 --> 00:03:32.840
two equals m G o H two. Plush no no, no, no
32
00:03:32.840 --> 00:03:37.280
no non members c A c l
man. Huh. Yes, yes,
33
00:03:37.719 --> 00:03:40.400
perhaps if I modulate into F sharp
in this phrase. But if he had
34
00:03:40.439 --> 00:03:46.240
calcium had druck side to magnusium,
clarade your pacificate the magnesium as a hydrate.
35
00:03:46.319 --> 00:03:50.759
Maybe a progression of chords ending with
the diminished seven m zcl two plus
36
00:03:50.840 --> 00:03:55.159
c A o H two equals m
g oh. Oh, you're speaking of
37
00:03:55.199 --> 00:04:02.360
meumussis. I'm merely trying to quat
chemical campaigns in my mind what's left in
38
00:04:02.400 --> 00:04:09.120
my mind? But that's internal noise. You're making noise, my dear professor.
39
00:04:09.360 --> 00:04:13.400
What strikes you a tin here as
noise? Maybe heavenly music to a
40
00:04:13.479 --> 00:04:16.199
more discriminating order. Even if your
proposition with true your penis is false,
41
00:04:16.839 --> 00:04:21.319
you cannot call that piano chinkering music. Touche, let's argue the point.
42
00:04:21.439 --> 00:04:27.879
Huh saved by the bell shall Yeah, I wouldn't dream of taking you away
43
00:04:27.920 --> 00:04:35.199
from your magnesium and hydrates. Hello, oh, hello, I don't know
44
00:04:35.240 --> 00:04:39.839
whether you remember. You didn't start
by saying guess who, So it must
45
00:04:39.839 --> 00:04:45.079
be somebody alike. June Adams June
Darling, it's been over a year.
46
00:04:45.120 --> 00:04:53.759
Where have you been? Uh still
infection? I know, yeah, I
47
00:04:54.160 --> 00:04:59.600
couldn't think of a nice figure for
it. It happens too where yo,
48
00:05:00.279 --> 00:05:05.920
very she she, I feel you're
always different from what you always would give
49
00:05:05.959 --> 00:05:11.120
me good at Oh? Yes,
sometimes I talk too much for my own
50
00:05:11.199 --> 00:05:14.759
good. Oh where are you living? Now? I can ride over?
51
00:05:15.279 --> 00:05:20.560
I can't tomorrow? Then tomorrow,
Oh good, I'll see you there.
52
00:05:21.160 --> 00:05:25.560
I don't think why not. I've
been wanting to get a look at the
53
00:05:25.600 --> 00:05:38.079
new style, to give every woman's
figure a chance. Kind of nights.
54
00:05:42.800 --> 00:05:46.120
There has been much too much hype
of conversation about the new friends and miligious
55
00:05:46.160 --> 00:05:51.120
fashions. As soon as I mean, the world can stand still. No,
56
00:05:51.800 --> 00:05:59.040
as we change within, we must
change without without talking about clothes without
57
00:05:59.120 --> 00:06:04.319
clothes. But I ari look to
the future, and in the future I
58
00:06:04.439 --> 00:06:09.319
see the past, and in both
I see today's woman, the neat this
59
00:06:09.399 --> 00:06:12.360
trick of a week. I've very
told fortunes before you got into this racket.
60
00:06:12.800 --> 00:06:19.759
So now with me, today's woman
on our ari. Pull yourself together.
61
00:06:23.680 --> 00:06:28.759
First, the cocoon, the new
swelt, the silhouette in smooth black
62
00:06:28.879 --> 00:06:33.720
wood, no accentuations of shoulders,
no centuations of the waistline, in fact,
63
00:06:33.959 --> 00:06:43.600
no situations at all, in fact
no good Where next? Next the
64
00:06:43.759 --> 00:06:49.720
triangle in shimmering red velvet with gracefully
sloped shoulders, swinging simply but dramatically to
65
00:06:49.920 --> 00:06:57.160
the low and white bluck hen it
must swing and swing loves winglow sweet cherrier.
66
00:06:58.519 --> 00:07:04.480
Yes, out and no dramatic file. The watch with the diminished shoulders,
67
00:07:04.600 --> 00:07:09.319
the petted boozoom, the rounded hip
line, and the pinched weight.
68
00:07:09.680 --> 00:07:12.959
Hey, yes, now that that's
more like that reminds me of my grandmother.
69
00:07:13.120 --> 00:07:15.879
It does, but not tell Joan
man, who is that John modeling
70
00:07:15.920 --> 00:07:19.480
that one? Yes? And she
doesn't look so good? That good?
71
00:07:19.600 --> 00:07:26.839
Hello, Joan? Yeah, look
John, put me may I could throw
72
00:07:26.879 --> 00:07:30.879
place, mister John. What is
happening? What is it? Miss Adams?
73
00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:43.759
Joan, she can't hear you are
Ray Jones dead? I found something
74
00:07:43.839 --> 00:07:47.360
there. I want to introduce you
to miss Sandra Weston. Come in,
75
00:07:47.439 --> 00:07:53.839
Miss Weston. You did find something, professor, Yes, yes you,
76
00:07:55.879 --> 00:08:00.319
hello, miss Weston. Hello,
mister land Why why don't you the cool,
77
00:08:01.319 --> 00:08:05.600
the smelt silhouette and smooth black wool? Yes, so glad? Why
78
00:08:05.639 --> 00:08:09.319
didn't you tell me that miss Adams
was ill when she came in today.
79
00:08:09.399 --> 00:08:11.079
But Henri, I didn't know she
was there. I don't she was upset,
80
00:08:11.160 --> 00:08:13.600
but she came perfectly. Well,
I'll tell you why she was upset.
81
00:08:16.160 --> 00:08:20.120
Were you close friends? We shared
a dressing room, We liked each
82
00:08:20.160 --> 00:08:24.560
other. That's what you mean.
I can't understand what? No, neither
83
00:08:24.639 --> 00:08:28.920
can I. I got your message, and oh am I interrupting something private,
84
00:08:30.040 --> 00:08:33.960
I inspected. Thanks for dropping by, Inspects Meet Inspector Holland blood Harm
85
00:08:35.320 --> 00:08:39.559
Sandraw Weston. Hello. Wow,
you know Professor Higgins. Of course,
86
00:08:39.679 --> 00:08:43.120
yeah, I know him. I
feel exactly the same words. This is
87
00:08:43.159 --> 00:08:48.080
not a matter for watched the gag
lance. I heard a girl by the
88
00:08:48.200 --> 00:08:50.320
name of Joan Adams, one of
Henry's models, died here just a few
89
00:08:50.360 --> 00:08:54.879
minutes ago. Ah, she collapsed
in the salon. Sounds like a job
90
00:08:54.919 --> 00:08:56.159
for a doctor, not me.
Hadn't I do? It might be in
91
00:08:56.200 --> 00:09:00.919
your territory, Inspector, Yeah,
I came down here to see Joan Adam
92
00:09:00.919 --> 00:09:03.759
instead or alive. No jokes,
I knew Joan. I saw it die.
93
00:09:05.039 --> 00:09:07.080
Okay, I'm sorry, wells you
called me last night. She was
94
00:09:07.080 --> 00:09:11.559
in trouble. What kind that's what
I came here to find out what trouble
95
00:09:11.679 --> 00:09:16.200
caught up with the first. You
think it's maybe Stewart's side stars side.
96
00:09:16.600 --> 00:09:18.200
Yes, I know, miss Weston, you're thinking the same thing I am.
97
00:09:18.840 --> 00:09:24.120
Joan. Wasn't that kind of a
girl? Huh? And maybe murder?
98
00:09:24.559 --> 00:09:26.960
Maybe murder? Oh no, no, no, no, I'm postable.
99
00:09:28.120 --> 00:09:31.759
How do you know it wasn't murder? Henry? How do Randall inspector?
100
00:09:31.320 --> 00:09:35.759
This is definitely his? Yes,
and naturally that changes everything, not
101
00:09:37.000 --> 00:09:39.399
for me? What have you got
besides theories? Lance bouts of asprint a
102
00:09:39.440 --> 00:09:45.080
bottle of vitamin pills here on him
on Joan's dressing table. I guess I
103
00:09:45.200 --> 00:09:46.200
might as wont to take them down. I'll have them an alives. Let
104
00:09:46.240 --> 00:09:48.679
me know what you're find sure.
I wouldn't want you to waste your time.
105
00:09:50.080 --> 00:09:52.159
I'll give you a buzz too,
Henry, in case you're interested me.
106
00:09:54.080 --> 00:10:13.799
What is it myth? I'm ruined
already anyway? Oh your listens?
107
00:10:13.320 --> 00:10:18.639
Can you answer that place? No? No? Okay, okay, that's
108
00:10:18.720 --> 00:10:24.639
when we're getting you to stop playing
it is hello? Hello Lass. Oh
109
00:10:24.720 --> 00:10:26.919
you guess Brent, that girl didn't
want to live. She took poison.
110
00:10:28.279 --> 00:10:33.240
Michael Best aid, there's no proof
she took it, inspector didn't. Analysis
111
00:10:33.279 --> 00:10:35.480
of the stomming content shows that you
eat lunch, had a couple of cocktails
112
00:10:35.519 --> 00:10:39.679
and ask them in the vitamin pill
without getting the ideas the bottom of askepirin
113
00:10:39.759 --> 00:10:43.799
and the vitamin fills you file showed
not wonder where she got the cocktails lest
114
00:10:43.840 --> 00:10:48.600
the last you yourself told me he
was in some kind of trouble or whatever
115
00:10:48.679 --> 00:10:50.879
it was. She couldn't face it. Okay, thanks for letting me know.
116
00:10:52.279 --> 00:10:58.799
Goodbye, m Lake for company.
Never too late for this place.
117
00:10:58.039 --> 00:11:05.519
Don't don't bother number. I'll get
it. You have the wrong appostments.
118
00:11:05.919 --> 00:11:11.080
Everything's wrong, even this supartment.
I can't help it. Good thing.
119
00:11:11.240 --> 00:11:15.480
Wait a minute, uses isn't it
sure it's George King Cave? Oh?
120
00:11:15.600 --> 00:11:18.759
This is then this man? Here
was Jess Kinning. Who is this?
121
00:11:20.039 --> 00:11:24.879
Bill Joy's King Katie the jeweler in
Beverly Hills long mention this? Oh can
122
00:11:24.960 --> 00:11:28.159
I please come in and sit down? Yeah? You're better before you fall
123
00:11:28.240 --> 00:11:33.360
down? Thank you all? Was
my ginner George. Wait a minute,
124
00:11:33.360 --> 00:11:41.039
here's the chair. He feels good? What is the chin? Sumoha?
125
00:11:41.240 --> 00:11:45.559
Oh? Bill? Bill Bill A
Bill All, Bill All, Bill All,
126
00:11:45.679 --> 00:11:48.279
Bill All. That's me Bill.
Bill. I don't know how glad
127
00:11:48.320 --> 00:11:52.720
I am to see you. Bill, I just hard to see you.
128
00:11:52.639 --> 00:11:56.799
You were there. You you'll understand, of course. Now give me a
129
00:11:56.879 --> 00:12:01.840
break, Joyce talking beginning. Huh, Bill, I've started rust from the
130
00:12:01.279 --> 00:12:07.960
very beginning. That's the place.
Yeah. Who is that man over there
131
00:12:09.200 --> 00:12:13.679
is a corner? Nobody? He
just lives here. Oh well, right,
132
00:12:13.759 --> 00:12:18.600
iven, b I've started right from
the very beginning. You see down,
133
00:12:18.799 --> 00:12:24.759
look at me. You that's come
on, come on, George.
134
00:12:24.799 --> 00:12:30.639
Why did you coming here? Oh
look Bill? You saw everything anybody's telling
135
00:12:30.679 --> 00:12:37.360
me? Oh Bill, Bill saw
my father. Poor girl, Bill,
136
00:12:39.440 --> 00:12:41.799
I didn't know. He's delirious.
And I tell you list he's given time.
137
00:12:43.360 --> 00:12:46.240
Hey Bill, we don't know.
Bruce Randolph, oh sure, lives
138
00:12:46.279 --> 00:12:50.960
in Bella, lots of money.
One of my very best customers bought a
139
00:12:50.000 --> 00:12:54.720
bracelest who his wife's birthday a couple
of months ago, diamonds and rubies,
140
00:12:56.320 --> 00:13:00.559
red ones, real thing too.
And then then a couple of days ago,
141
00:13:01.240 --> 00:13:07.320
missus Randolph comes in buying something so
and actually I asked how she liked
142
00:13:07.360 --> 00:13:13.600
the bracelet. You know what she
said what bracelet? You see what I
143
00:13:13.679 --> 00:13:16.840
mean? They've shot people? But
lessing that, Jordan, I know,
144
00:13:16.039 --> 00:13:22.559
Bill, I'm all good. I
started all you see, mister Randal was
145
00:13:22.600 --> 00:13:31.399
a little extra currc extra curric he
played around with Joan Adam. How did
146
00:13:31.440 --> 00:13:35.960
you know? You just told me? Oh, I knew you would understand,
147
00:13:35.080 --> 00:13:39.120
Bill, Bill bro I feel better. I'm glad. I guess I'll
148
00:13:39.200 --> 00:13:43.840
gone on. You can make it. I got his, didn't I?
149
00:13:46.399 --> 00:13:50.360
Bill? I send him glad.
I had his nice little talk with you.
150
00:13:52.240 --> 00:13:56.360
That man's looking at me, and
watch out, Bill, he's got
151
00:13:56.519 --> 00:14:03.399
any Oh my, there goes the
forerunner of a beautiful hangover. How can
152
00:14:03.440 --> 00:14:07.600
you waste your time on a drunken
pool like that? Who wasted time?
153
00:14:07.159 --> 00:14:09.440
I don't start building a case on
a lot of idol? Talk about a
154
00:14:09.480 --> 00:14:13.639
bracelet? He didn't even know who
mister Randolph gave it to. But I
155
00:14:13.799 --> 00:14:18.440
do, evil eye look diamonds and
rubies, real thing? Where did you
156
00:14:18.480 --> 00:14:22.279
get that bracelet? Off? Jones
Race? What are you gonna do?
157
00:14:22.799 --> 00:14:26.240
That's I'll give it a mister Randolph
so he can give it to missus Randolph
158
00:14:26.519 --> 00:14:45.679
for her next birthday d d DA, So long, ulysses? Were you
159
00:14:45.799 --> 00:14:50.519
going so earlier, I have a
date with a cocoon? What oh,
160
00:14:50.399 --> 00:14:54.679
why she hadn't been for me?
You wouldn't even know that there was a
161
00:14:54.799 --> 00:15:01.919
Sandra Weston after all, I found
me? Why of fessive? I didn't
162
00:15:01.960 --> 00:15:05.159
know your kid? Why didn't you
say something? Had a chance to speak
163
00:15:05.200 --> 00:15:07.159
to you about it? You?
I'll tell you what I'll do. I'll
164
00:15:07.159 --> 00:15:20.519
put in a good word for you. Oh Sandra and a microphones under the
165
00:15:20.559 --> 00:15:26.440
table. Nobody's even looking this way. You can I'll speak freely. What
166
00:15:26.559 --> 00:15:30.440
do you want to know? Just
what do you think of the broken down
167
00:15:30.559 --> 00:15:35.200
hemline and the droopie skirt? That
isn't a fair question. I make a
168
00:15:35.279 --> 00:15:39.559
living showing how fashions change, honey, this is no change of the revolution.
169
00:15:39.759 --> 00:15:41.279
That doesn't excite to me. I've
been through too many of them at
170
00:15:41.320 --> 00:15:43.879
antrays. Do you want to give
me a pension? I've been a too
171
00:15:43.919 --> 00:15:46.919
long. You think I'm one of
the sixtures. Maybe anytime you want to
172
00:15:46.919 --> 00:15:50.440
break your contract, I could be
interesting, a nice speech, miss to
173
00:15:50.519 --> 00:15:54.519
learn, But you're not in addressing
this. When you didn't ask me to
174
00:15:54.600 --> 00:15:58.639
lunch to just to talk shop?
Did you? Would you say? Joan
175
00:15:58.679 --> 00:16:02.600
Adams is shop talking. I can't
get Joan out of my mind, as
176
00:16:03.240 --> 00:16:07.000
I've got somebody else in my mind. Now, No tell her name,
177
00:16:07.120 --> 00:16:14.200
Randolph. Oh you know very little. Well, then I suppose there's no
178
00:16:14.279 --> 00:16:17.279
reason for my trying to cover up
with Joan and wad. Yeah, I
179
00:16:17.360 --> 00:16:19.399
wondered why you didn't say anything.
What Joan did was her own affair.
180
00:16:21.120 --> 00:16:26.879
Now, well why stodn't any ugly
godsam? Yeah, I was. Joan
181
00:16:26.000 --> 00:16:30.600
really worried about yesterday morning Missus Randolph
called her and actually head lunch. Oh
182
00:16:30.759 --> 00:16:34.039
that explained the cocksail. Well,
she had a couple of drinks from Missus
183
00:16:34.080 --> 00:16:37.000
Randolph. That's all. So tell
you how the meeting turned off. She
184
00:16:37.080 --> 00:16:40.639
got back at the shop before I
did. But when I thought it grow
185
00:16:40.639 --> 00:16:44.279
into a dressing room, I heard
her calling with someone recognize the boys,
186
00:16:45.440 --> 00:16:48.879
Bruce right now. But that doesn't
prove anything, doesn't. Yes, it
187
00:16:48.960 --> 00:16:55.559
does prove something very important, Bruce. How lucky I am lucky? Yeah?
188
00:16:56.600 --> 00:17:00.000
All this hadn't happened, I wouldn't
have met you, Oh haven't.
189
00:17:00.720 --> 00:17:04.079
I'm lucky Hill. Now you've made
me an honest man, I don't have
190
00:17:04.160 --> 00:17:07.519
to play detective anymore. Just make
a date with you tonight. Well,
191
00:17:07.599 --> 00:17:12.759
that's a like concept can break that
might lead to a complication. I can
192
00:17:12.799 --> 00:17:15.960
be so discreet, but it's a
friend with you. No, that even
193
00:17:17.000 --> 00:17:23.400
makes it easier? Who is it? Ulysses? Well, what do you
194
00:17:23.480 --> 00:17:27.519
know? When did you make the
dates? He called us before you picked
195
00:17:27.559 --> 00:17:32.559
me up? Where the two timing? Double coat and second thought? More
196
00:17:32.640 --> 00:17:34.319
power to him? Right now he
and I have been shopping to do in
197
00:17:34.400 --> 00:17:45.839
Beverly Hills. Man, I would
be only too willing to help you,
198
00:17:45.000 --> 00:17:48.920
but of course it is completely unnecessary. Now is it all right? Oh?
199
00:17:49.079 --> 00:17:52.440
I have talked with the inspector.
I learned it is very sad.
200
00:17:52.720 --> 00:17:59.039
O girl destroyed herself. I wonder
why? Who knows? There's so many
201
00:17:59.160 --> 00:18:03.720
reasons why one can despair? Of
course I didn't know poor John very well.
202
00:18:03.279 --> 00:18:06.920
Well, well enough, she had
been with me only a few months.
203
00:18:07.359 --> 00:18:10.079
But it does not mean that I
don't suffer as though she had been
204
00:18:10.160 --> 00:18:12.519
with me for years. No,
of course. Incidentally, did you know
205
00:18:12.599 --> 00:18:18.200
that Bruce Randolph came to talk to
Jones just before Why? Why? He's
206
00:18:18.240 --> 00:18:22.759
a very old and valid pat on
my son. He was seeing leaving jones
207
00:18:22.880 --> 00:18:27.119
dressing room just before the fashion show
I'm possible. She last, May I
208
00:18:27.240 --> 00:18:32.799
give you some advice? What has
been has been beginn into the past.
209
00:18:32.880 --> 00:18:44.599
Will do nobody any good? Well? Bill wanted to apologize. I must
210
00:18:44.599 --> 00:18:47.160
have been pretty far gone last night
to bar Jeanne on you that way.
211
00:18:47.279 --> 00:18:51.039
Don't apologized, George, you were
very cute and mister Kinkad you took an
212
00:18:51.039 --> 00:18:55.039
intense disclike to me. Oh were
you there? I don't remember you and
213
00:18:55.279 --> 00:18:56.920
must have been a mass How are
you talking of? Told us a very
214
00:18:56.960 --> 00:19:00.039
sad story about a birthday and a
bracelet. Dunk a nonsense, Bill,
215
00:19:00.119 --> 00:19:04.000
dunk a nonsense. H do me
your favor? Will you together? Oh,
216
00:19:04.079 --> 00:19:06.799
but there are a couple of things
I'd like to ask you about.
217
00:19:06.799 --> 00:19:11.079
Bruce Randolph. Bill, mister Randolph
has been a very good customer of mine
218
00:19:11.119 --> 00:19:15.640
for years. What I told you
should ever get out? I'm a dead
219
00:19:15.759 --> 00:19:26.319
duck. Bill. Why don't you
just give up and admit that you made
220
00:19:26.319 --> 00:19:30.000
a mistake. Oh, I know
what's on your mind, but there's nothing
221
00:19:30.079 --> 00:19:33.599
to it. And if you won't
listen to me, will listen to the
222
00:19:33.680 --> 00:19:38.240
others. Inspector Harland Armory, you
can carry I've listened to them. Well,
223
00:19:38.240 --> 00:19:41.880
I can't see I haven't tried.
Would you mind dropping me off here?
224
00:19:42.480 --> 00:19:47.240
I have more important things to do. Okay, you're listening. I
225
00:19:47.279 --> 00:19:51.440
wouldn't want to break your dates and
anyway, you're not interested in what Missus
226
00:19:51.519 --> 00:19:56.039
Randolph may have to say. Missus
Randolph, No, I'm not well.
227
00:19:56.160 --> 00:20:00.559
On the second thought, I guess
I do have time after stop kidding for
228
00:20:00.640 --> 00:20:02.799
Fethy. You know in the end
you always come along for the ride.
229
00:20:14.960 --> 00:20:18.519
Cozy little shack, isn't it very
very? It is very very I always
230
00:20:18.559 --> 00:20:22.279
did think that that twenty four rooms
wasn't live Oh, I don't know.
231
00:20:23.200 --> 00:20:26.240
In a tine she could turn this
living room into a nice skating rink.
232
00:20:27.640 --> 00:20:32.400
Yes you wish to see me,
Oh, Missus Randolph. My name is
233
00:20:32.400 --> 00:20:37.400
Bill Lance. This is my friend, Professor Higgins. Oh was it something
234
00:20:37.480 --> 00:20:40.160
connected with the university. No,
no, Missus land, I am not
235
00:20:40.240 --> 00:20:44.000
here in my official capacity. But
my butler said you had an appointment with
236
00:20:44.160 --> 00:20:47.319
me. I don't remember making anything. Oh you didn't. Actually, I
237
00:20:47.640 --> 00:20:49.240
took the liberty of coming here to
ask you a few questions about a friend
238
00:20:49.240 --> 00:20:55.920
of mine. Oh, Joan Adams. Joan Adams, I'm sorry, I
239
00:20:56.000 --> 00:20:59.880
don't understand. Well, she was
a very close friend of your husband's.
240
00:21:00.599 --> 00:21:04.440
That's subtle identifying for you. Who
are you, mister Lane? Don't you
241
00:21:04.680 --> 00:21:11.279
know ulysses if Missus Randolph, I
thought you'd appreciate my coming to see you
242
00:21:11.359 --> 00:21:15.960
before the police do police, mister
Randolph was rather deeply involved with miss Adams.
243
00:21:17.519 --> 00:21:22.440
Yes, sorry, I'm aware of
that. Perhaps you don't realize how
244
00:21:22.519 --> 00:21:26.519
deeply. But what has that to
do with the police. Johan Adams died
245
00:21:26.960 --> 00:21:32.920
yesterday afternoon. I'm sorry she was
murdered. Your husband happened to be in
246
00:21:32.960 --> 00:21:36.440
her dressing room at Henri's yesterday afternoon. There was an argument. He left
247
00:21:36.480 --> 00:21:41.200
suddenly and angrily, and almost immediately
afterwards, Joan collapsed. She died of
248
00:21:41.960 --> 00:21:45.880
poison. Poison Bruce I was the
quarrel about how fared he committed himself.
249
00:21:45.920 --> 00:21:48.960
But he couldn't have done it.
She took the poison herself. Oh no,
250
00:21:49.039 --> 00:21:52.960
Missus Randolph, I knew Joan Adams
may have been foolish, but she
251
00:21:53.039 --> 00:21:56.880
never ran away. What did she
have to gain by killing herself? But
252
00:21:57.039 --> 00:22:00.440
her husband was in a real jam. He wasn't very discreet. You though
253
00:22:02.079 --> 00:22:06.200
all our reason knew about him and
Joan. Mister Lane, I'm going to
254
00:22:06.279 --> 00:22:10.319
tell you something you don't know.
I had luncheon with Joan Adams just to
255
00:22:10.960 --> 00:22:15.400
please uses. I've never had any
illusions about my husband, but I love
256
00:22:15.480 --> 00:22:22.039
him, so I accepted his romantic
indulgences. I've even felt sorry for some
257
00:22:22.160 --> 00:22:26.000
of the girls, especially when they
took him too seriously. That's why I
258
00:22:26.160 --> 00:22:30.160
wanted to speak to Joan Adams.
You understand that, mister Lane, she
259
00:22:30.240 --> 00:22:36.359
took him too seriously. I had
to find out. She laughed at me.
260
00:22:37.839 --> 00:22:41.359
How could a young girl like that
know what what a home means?
261
00:22:41.720 --> 00:22:45.559
How could she know how a wife
feels? How could she understand it?
262
00:22:47.400 --> 00:22:52.759
You don't just give up everything that
has meaning because of a whim. You
263
00:22:52.960 --> 00:22:56.079
think my husband killed her, No, mister Lane, I was the one
264
00:22:56.079 --> 00:23:00.279
who had to get rid of her. All right, let's violent ways of
265
00:23:00.400 --> 00:23:03.759
handling that kind of a situation.
Missus random you told me the police would
266
00:23:03.759 --> 00:23:08.039
be coming here. Yes, I'm
quite willing to tell them what I've told
267
00:23:08.079 --> 00:23:14.200
you. And now, mister Lance, would you leave please? I assure
268
00:23:14.240 --> 00:23:22.400
you that I'll be here when the
police arrive. Where now I've seen everything,
269
00:23:23.079 --> 00:23:26.920
not some nerve in her body?
Why does she lead me feel like
270
00:23:26.960 --> 00:23:29.480
that? She was doing us a
favor by confession. Quite a girl.
271
00:23:30.920 --> 00:23:33.839
Somebody's got to stick around make sure
she doesn't change your mind. Well,
272
00:23:33.880 --> 00:23:37.720
goodbye, wall. Wait a minute, I've got to call Inspector Holland,
273
00:23:37.720 --> 00:23:41.160
and I've got to run and catch
Randof before he leaves his office. Why
274
00:23:41.279 --> 00:23:42.920
Randoff, don't you think he might
like to know what's happening? It's none
275
00:23:42.920 --> 00:23:45.359
of mind. Would be a word
about your date? Forget me? Oh
276
00:23:45.480 --> 00:23:48.319
no, no, you listes.
I'll guarantee that you keep your date,
277
00:23:48.440 --> 00:24:00.799
even if I have to deliver Sandra
to you personally. John Adams, No
278
00:24:02.039 --> 00:24:06.079
afraid Lance whatever gave you the idea? Anio? I ad him an other
279
00:24:06.160 --> 00:24:10.279
things, mister Randolph as bracelet,
I thought you might want it, after
280
00:24:10.359 --> 00:24:12.920
all, didn't you bias for your
wife's birthday? Where did you get there
281
00:24:14.279 --> 00:24:21.279
from Joan? After she died that
she was poisoned? So because I gave
282
00:24:21.319 --> 00:24:25.079
her that bracelet, you came here
to blackmail me? Well if you no,
283
00:24:25.400 --> 00:24:27.680
No, that isn't why I came
here. I just wanted to tell
284
00:24:27.720 --> 00:24:32.720
you that your wife had launched it
with Joan yesterday she learned about the bracelet.
285
00:24:33.400 --> 00:24:37.599
May talk about you over a couple
of drinks. I thought she'd like
286
00:24:37.720 --> 00:24:40.160
to know. Also, that your
wife has just confessed that she murdered Joan
287
00:24:41.440 --> 00:24:47.000
Lance. I'm a r don't apologize, but I've always been able to get
288
00:24:47.000 --> 00:24:49.720
away with it, always been able
to go back home, and until this
289
00:24:49.880 --> 00:24:55.559
time, this time I had lost
my head Jones dressing home yesterday afternoon.
290
00:24:56.480 --> 00:25:00.400
Yes, yes, she let me
my wife. I went a little crazy.
291
00:25:00.680 --> 00:25:03.880
Oh so now you're confessing to the
murder of John Adams. Yes,
292
00:25:03.000 --> 00:25:07.400
yes, of course, Yeah,
that's it. Well and Randolph, in
293
00:25:07.440 --> 00:25:10.000
that case, i'd high tailed out
of your house. A police are on
294
00:25:10.079 --> 00:25:30.319
their way now to pick up your
wife. Oh, spies, why did
295
00:25:30.400 --> 00:25:33.720
you do with the professor? Well, he didn't really need to stand you
296
00:25:33.839 --> 00:25:36.839
up. He was he was delayed. You were the circumstances beyond his control.
297
00:25:37.039 --> 00:25:41.359
Oh we got our murdering. Was
it really murder? Tell you all
298
00:25:41.359 --> 00:25:44.680
about it on the way out.
Oh, they going. I promise Ulysses
299
00:25:44.680 --> 00:25:56.079
would take him up. We can
always ditch him later. Well, well,
300
00:25:56.240 --> 00:26:00.519
well, miss Weston, you did
me. I hope William has explained.
301
00:26:00.799 --> 00:26:03.759
Yes he has, Professor Higgins,
you're forgiven. But that's very nice.
302
00:26:06.240 --> 00:26:10.319
It's very nice. Bill The randolphs
in the living room with Inspector Harding.
303
00:26:10.960 --> 00:26:12.519
You won't be eating us any longer. You keep your shirt, an
304
00:26:12.559 --> 00:26:15.680
old boy, we can all go
out together later. You don't mind,
305
00:26:15.720 --> 00:26:18.200
are you? Soundra? Take us
a minute it too, Come on,
306
00:26:22.920 --> 00:26:27.799
inspected. It's quite unnecessary to make
my wife endure this any longer. I've
307
00:26:27.839 --> 00:26:30.680
already told you that I did it, and I don't. Yeah, you
308
00:26:32.440 --> 00:26:36.079
know it. Just a minute,
folk, Well last, you're just in
309
00:26:36.200 --> 00:26:40.039
time to solve the solution. I
got one murder at too many. Oh,
310
00:26:40.119 --> 00:26:41.720
it's not like you to complain when
business is so good, Inspector.
311
00:26:42.119 --> 00:26:45.079
But I think we can settle us
very quickly. Elements to Randolph. Missus
312
00:26:45.119 --> 00:26:48.960
Randoph. Oh, oh yes,
I need we forgot Oh Soundra, come
313
00:26:49.000 --> 00:26:53.880
on in. You both know Soundra
Weston? Of course? No, wait
314
00:26:53.880 --> 00:26:57.440
a minute. I couldn't be mistaken. You do know one another, or
315
00:26:57.480 --> 00:27:00.599
it did once. As a matter
of fact. That's why I brought Sandra
316
00:27:00.759 --> 00:27:04.319
here to help us with our little
problem. What do you mean what she
317
00:27:04.440 --> 00:27:07.599
got to do with our list?
She knows mister and Missus Randolph better than
318
00:27:07.640 --> 00:27:11.880
we do. Perhaps she can decide
which one is telling the truth. I
319
00:27:12.799 --> 00:27:17.720
wouldn't want to take that responsibility.
Oh, just for a moment, imagine
320
00:27:17.720 --> 00:27:22.119
yourself as Joan huh O very year, think back a little while when you
321
00:27:22.200 --> 00:27:26.839
were in a very similar position,
aren't you If you're wondering how I found
322
00:27:26.880 --> 00:27:29.400
out, Well, it's pretty hard
to keep the secret around the place like
323
00:27:29.480 --> 00:27:32.960
aunt Ries, when you get expensive
gifts from the jeweler, like kin Cave.
324
00:27:33.720 --> 00:27:36.839
Mister Randolph has always been very generous
to his lady friends, hasn't he.
325
00:27:37.200 --> 00:27:40.680
You never asked me about that door. I would have told you it's
326
00:27:40.720 --> 00:27:44.119
over anyway. Don't you agree with
me that it's pretty hard to imagine Missus
327
00:27:44.160 --> 00:27:48.440
Randolph killing Joan. She didn't kill
you when you were involved with her husband.
328
00:27:48.240 --> 00:27:52.160
And when mister Randolph had a little
trouble shaking you off after it became
329
00:27:52.200 --> 00:27:55.599
interested in Joan, he didn't kill
you either. You see, they have
330
00:27:55.680 --> 00:27:57.400
all the answers. You told me
about the luncheon date with Missus Randolph,
331
00:27:57.440 --> 00:28:02.519
about hearing mister Randolph and Jones dressing
room. You knew why Joan was agitated.
332
00:28:02.599 --> 00:28:04.359
The stage was all set. Joan
had a headache, didn't she.
333
00:28:06.279 --> 00:28:10.440
You were very helpful, So you
wanted some aspirin and so inspective. Would
334
00:28:10.440 --> 00:28:14.839
you like another confession, Sandra?
Sandra, you were over, you wouldn't
335
00:28:14.839 --> 00:28:21.880
believe me. I never let anyone
else, But hey man, it seems
336
00:28:21.880 --> 00:28:26.119
to do one night, three confessions, only one score inspect The two don't
337
00:28:26.200 --> 00:28:41.920
count. At least you could have
told me neither, Sandra. Yeah,
338
00:28:41.000 --> 00:28:45.319
I wasn't too sure myself until the
Randolps were cleared. You mean they were
339
00:28:45.359 --> 00:28:48.000
cleared when they confessed. Oh?
Sure, that eliminated them. You see,
340
00:28:48.079 --> 00:28:52.160
in shielding each other, they showed
how they would behave in a crisis.
341
00:28:52.799 --> 00:28:55.720
They got a move for them right
then. But if either one of
342
00:28:55.759 --> 00:28:57.880
them had murdered Joan, they wouldn't
have left that bracelet on her arm.
343
00:28:59.519 --> 00:29:02.880
That's dazzling bit of evidence. Would
have inevitably committed one or both of them
344
00:29:02.960 --> 00:29:06.920
with a murder. Se But what
first made you think it might be?
345
00:29:07.079 --> 00:29:11.680
Send Sandra herself. She told me
she'd been with Henria a long time,
346
00:29:12.240 --> 00:29:17.759
and Henri told me Randolph had been
an old customer. She recognized his voice
347
00:29:17.759 --> 00:29:21.119
in Joan's dressing room. She called
him Bruce, and then caught herself.
348
00:29:22.160 --> 00:29:25.359
Well, once I knew that it
was comparatively easy to check up on history
349
00:29:25.400 --> 00:29:29.039
and find out more about Randolph and
Sandra, and then I had the motive.
350
00:29:29.599 --> 00:29:33.720
Yes, but Sandram, why did
it have to be sent? No
351
00:29:33.039 --> 00:29:41.720
ulysses? Underneath that solemn moustear mask
of yours is a heart just palpitating with
352
00:29:41.880 --> 00:29:53.400
romances. Too bad your dream girl
turned out to be Lucretia Borger. You
353
00:29:53.480 --> 00:29:57.200
have been listening to another in a
series of undriguing mysteries starring Gerald Morris,
354
00:29:57.240 --> 00:30:02.599
Bill Lance with Hard McNair's You Listen
Higgins the Night. Supporting cast included Cliff
355
00:30:02.599 --> 00:30:07.839
Clark as Inspector Holland, Georgie Alliss, Sandra le Unblastos Are Lauras Calvertus,
356
00:30:07.880 --> 00:30:11.680
Missus, Randolph par McVeigh as mister
Randolph Charles Calvertus Kincaid. Music composed and
357
00:30:11.759 --> 00:30:18.359
played by Rex Corry. Join us
again next week, same time, over
358
00:30:18.440 --> 00:30:21.759
most of these same ABC stations,
when we bring you another of Bill Lancer's
359
00:30:21.799 --> 00:30:30.680
strange experiences in a story titled Special
Delivery. This Bill Lance Adventure Death Revenue
360
00:30:30.799 --> 00:30:45.759
Dress was written by Barbara and Milton
Merlin and directed by Whitehauser. Now Here's
361
00:30:45.799 --> 00:30:51.559
a special program note. David Harding
steps into a hot bed of intrigue in
362
00:30:51.680 --> 00:30:55.839
the case of the pony passport paper. Don't miss David Harding counters by this
363
00:30:55.960 --> 00:31:02.039
afternoon on his same ABC station,
This is ABC, the American Broadcasting Welcome
364
00:31:02.119 --> 00:31:07.720
back. Well. I enjoyed this
one. I did think that his solution
365
00:31:07.240 --> 00:31:12.440
that if either the husband or the
wife had committed the murder, they would
366
00:31:12.440 --> 00:31:17.640
have taken the bracelet with them.
It's kind of making a big bet on
367
00:31:17.960 --> 00:31:23.599
people thinking clearly in a very emotional
situation. Criminals do make these sort of
368
00:31:23.680 --> 00:31:29.799
mistakes in real life. I think
it's tricky in fiction because you don't want
369
00:31:29.839 --> 00:31:34.720
to rely too much on your criminal
being a stupid or making a dumb mistake.
370
00:31:36.079 --> 00:31:40.799
But you also wanted to have that
realism with that criminals do make mistakes.
371
00:31:41.119 --> 00:31:44.240
But other than that, this episode
was a lot of fun. I
372
00:31:44.440 --> 00:31:51.000
continue to enjoy just the relationship between
Bill and Ulysses. And of course Howard
373
00:31:51.079 --> 00:31:56.039
mcneir is always a lot to listen
to, and this is an recurring role
374
00:31:56.200 --> 00:32:05.400
where he's able to play to the
eccentricity that so many of his characters possess.
375
00:32:05.759 --> 00:32:09.039
You know, even in the one
shots where he's playing suspects on something
376
00:32:09.160 --> 00:32:15.599
like I'll let George do it or
yours truly, Johnny Dowler. Also,
377
00:32:15.680 --> 00:32:21.240
we got to hear Leon Blasco in
something other than The Man Called X.
378
00:32:21.480 --> 00:32:23.720
That was a question you know,
Bill asked like a few months back,
379
00:32:24.079 --> 00:32:28.799
and so it is nice to be
able to illustrate that on the program.
380
00:32:29.279 --> 00:32:36.440
The idea of a criminologist using psychological
clues to solve crimes was not unheard of
381
00:32:36.599 --> 00:32:39.799
during the Golden Age or radio.
We played a series a few years back
382
00:32:39.920 --> 00:32:45.960
called The Crime Piles of Flamont.
However, I think this series is actually
383
00:32:45.240 --> 00:32:50.799
a bit more enjoyable to listen to. It's got quite a bit more charm
384
00:32:51.119 --> 00:32:54.160
and the music element works well too. All right, well now I want
385
00:32:54.200 --> 00:32:58.880
to go ahead and thank our Patreon
supporter of the day. Thank you to
