Mercy can’t wait for a better day. We sit with Mark chapter three and watch Jesus heal on the Sabbath, confront brittle traditions, and reveal a kingdom where compassion outruns control. The crowds surge, unclean spirits fall, and the Son of God calls twelve ordinary men to carry an extraordinary mission—preach the gospel and push back darkness with real authority.
We pull apart the knot at the center of the chapter: what does it mean to blaspheme the Holy Spirit? Mark’s clarity is bracing—calling the Spirit’s work satanic shuts you off from the very grace you need. We explore why this isn’t a stray intrusive thought or a one-time doubt, but a hardened verdict that flips moral vision upside down. Along the way, we talk about Jesus’ emotional life—His anger at stubborn hearts and grief over their resistance—and why that matters for how we picture God’s character today.
The conversation also traces the deeper story behind the Twelve, a deliberate echo of Israel’s tribes that signals renewal and fulfillment. We wrestle with family tensions as Jesus’ mother and brothers try to pull Him back, and we hear His piercing redefinition of kinship: those who do God’s will are family. From there, we land on practical takeaways—honor the Sabbath as a day for worship and works of mercy, refuse legalism that sidelines love, and follow Jesus’ costly compassion even when it breaks your schedule.
If this conversation helped you see Jesus more clearly, share it with a friend, hit follow, and leave a review with your biggest takeaway. Your feedback helps more people find thoughtful, Bible-centered conversations like this.

00:00:11.039 --> 00:00:13.279
And welcome back to a chapter a day.
00:00:13.279 --> 00:00:14.400
Keeps the devil away.
00:00:14.400 --> 00:00:15.519
I'm Pastor Pleck.
00:00:15.519 --> 00:00:16.559
Along with Pastor Holland.
00:00:16.559 --> 00:00:19.120
We're talking Mark chapter three.
00:00:19.120 --> 00:00:20.399
We're going to outline it.
00:00:20.399 --> 00:00:22.239
We're going to find some observations.
00:00:22.239 --> 00:00:25.440
We're going to make some interpretations about the nature of man, the character of God.
00:00:25.440 --> 00:00:31.199
And then finally, we're going to make an application and figure out which sin we need to avoid, which promise we need to claim.
00:00:31.199 --> 00:00:35.520
Perhaps an example to follow, command to obey, or knowledge to believe.
00:00:35.520 --> 00:00:36.000
All right.
00:00:36.000 --> 00:00:44.079
So Mark three starts out with Jesus healing on the Sabbath of a dude who has a withered hand, verses one through six.
00:00:44.079 --> 00:00:49.840
Then he's got these large crowds, and then he has the authority over all the unclean spirits.
00:00:49.840 --> 00:00:52.719
They recognize his authority in verses seven through twelve.
00:00:52.719 --> 00:01:01.280
And then he chooses the 12 apostles in verses 13 through 19 and appoints them to uh preach and have authority over the demons.
00:01:01.280 --> 00:01:09.120
And then finally we have this conflict with family and religious leaders in verses 20 through 35.
00:01:09.120 --> 00:01:13.599
So uh observations that you found here, Holland.
00:01:13.920 --> 00:01:20.719
Man, Jesus really loved um challenging their view of the Sabbath.
00:01:21.519 --> 00:01:22.079
Yeah.
00:01:22.480 --> 00:01:24.719
It it seems like almost intentional.
00:01:24.719 --> 00:01:32.319
It may have just been incidental in that um, you know, he he seems to come across people on the Sabbath that need healing, and you know, so he helps them.
00:01:32.319 --> 00:01:42.079
But there's a part of it that really seems intentional, especially with Mark including it in here, that just shows like there was something very important people needed to understand about the purpose of the Sabbath.
00:01:42.319 --> 00:01:42.560
Yeah.
00:01:42.560 --> 00:01:52.000
I think the whole thing about healing, doing a work on the Sabbath, which if you were to think about it, what did what did Jesus actually do when he healed people?
00:01:52.000 --> 00:01:53.760
He would say, like, hey, stretch out your hand.
00:01:53.760 --> 00:01:54.159
Yeah.
00:01:54.159 --> 00:02:02.000
Like, and you're allowed to talk on the Sabbath, but you're not allowed to talking with healing on the Sabbath.
00:02:02.000 --> 00:02:02.560
Right.
00:02:02.560 --> 00:02:04.000
Which just seems wild to me.
00:02:04.000 --> 00:02:14.080
You're allowed to preach the gospel, which should heal someone's soul on the Sabbath, but you're not allowed to pray and watch God work on the Sabbath.
00:02:14.479 --> 00:02:15.039
Yeah.
00:02:15.360 --> 00:02:16.080
Kind of wild.
00:02:16.400 --> 00:02:16.800
Interesting.
00:02:16.800 --> 00:02:23.439
Also, another just observation that jumps out, verse five, you see kind of the emotional life of Jesus here.
00:02:23.439 --> 00:02:30.000
Uh, he looked around at them with anger, and then it says he was grieved at their hardness of heart.
00:02:30.319 --> 00:02:33.759
Ooh, like uh, yeah, that is hard to wrap your head around.
00:02:33.759 --> 00:02:36.159
How does how does Jesus have emotion?
00:02:36.159 --> 00:02:37.919
Uh he's not a stoic.
00:02:37.919 --> 00:02:46.080
He's not just like, he knows how it's all gonna go, but he does he's not immovable emotionally.
00:02:46.080 --> 00:02:46.879
I like that.
00:02:46.879 --> 00:02:54.479
Um, what about did you ever wonder why like Y12?
00:02:54.479 --> 00:02:59.439
Like there's 12 different disciples, 12 which ultimately become apostles.
00:02:59.439 --> 00:03:09.759
Uh it's not just you know, 12 tribes of Israel thing, but they're really 13, and maybe Jesus is like the 13th because he's like lead-I don't know, is where I probably go way too far into it.
00:03:09.759 --> 00:03:14.240
But uh Y12, uh I would love to know that.
00:03:14.560 --> 00:03:36.159
I think what you said there, the tribes of Israel, and you know, the the idea of 12, 12 sons of Jacob, 12 tribes of Israel, um Jesus choosing 12 here seems to be showing like a um continuity, but you know, toward a fulfillment of God is doing something new, a shift from an old 12 to a new 12.
00:03:36.400 --> 00:03:37.120
Here's a new 12.
00:03:37.120 --> 00:03:38.240
All right, I like that.
00:03:38.240 --> 00:03:40.879
Um okay, did you ever notice this, too?
00:03:40.879 --> 00:03:54.319
Is like Jesus is seen as a lunatic by his family and like a straight up hellish liar uh by the Pharisees and religious people.
00:03:54.319 --> 00:04:01.439
I always and you know, there's that one book by uh was it uh was it CS, I guess not book.
00:04:01.439 --> 00:04:06.000
Yeah, CSOC is he's either liar, lunatic, or lord, and then later on we throw in legend.
00:04:06.000 --> 00:04:08.000
Those are your four options with Jesus.
00:04:08.000 --> 00:04:17.199
But I I love how just the liar and the lunatic come out really clearly uh here of people really doubting who Jesus being who he says he is.
00:04:17.680 --> 00:04:18.639
Yeah, exactly.
00:04:18.639 --> 00:04:25.040
And this is you know, this gets to what does it mean to blaspheme the Holy Spirit?
00:04:25.040 --> 00:04:36.720
Um, verses 28 to 30 here, all sins will be forgiven, the children of man, and whatever blasphemies they utter, but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness.
00:04:36.959 --> 00:04:38.240
Yeah, it's an eternal sin.
00:04:38.399 --> 00:04:52.079
Yeah, and then a lot of people, you know, this came up uh recently in um a community group uh that I was leading, and people were talking, we were talking about, you know, whether or not you can um lose your salvation or how how can someone be saved?
00:04:52.079 --> 00:04:57.600
All these questions about salvation, and someone brought up what about the unforgivable sin?
00:04:57.600 --> 00:05:00.959
Um and so here it is, and it's really interesting.
00:05:00.959 --> 00:05:05.040
If you read all the way to verse 30, uh it explains what it is.
00:05:05.040 --> 00:05:08.720
It says, For they were saying he has an unclean spirit.
00:05:08.959 --> 00:05:09.120
Right.
00:05:09.120 --> 00:05:20.879
So that would mean that if you ascribe the miracles of Jesus to Satan, that would you were literally witnessing the Holy Spirit of God work, and you're saying, That's not God, that's of Satan, that's the unforgivable sin.
00:05:21.120 --> 00:05:26.879
Yeah, and it's because if you are, you know, that the only way to be saved is by faith in Jesus.
00:05:26.879 --> 00:05:32.319
And if you think Jesus is demonic, you're never gonna put your faith in him to be your savior.
00:05:32.319 --> 00:05:43.279
And so as long as you think that Jesus is demonic, that he did his works by, you know, the power of Satan, which is what they said, then there's no way you would come to him for salvation.
00:05:43.279 --> 00:05:43.839
Right.
00:05:44.079 --> 00:05:53.680
Um Do you think you can still do that today, or is that something that only those who witnessed the miracles of Jesus could experience?
00:05:54.000 --> 00:06:00.399
Yeah, I think it has a particular very specific application right there to those people who are witnessing his earthly ministry.
00:06:00.399 --> 00:06:00.720
Right.
00:06:00.720 --> 00:06:04.800
Um, but I think that principle still of when you read the gospels.
00:06:04.800 --> 00:06:06.560
Yeah, you don't really have a chance.
00:06:06.560 --> 00:06:15.199
When you read the gospels and you go, yeah, um, he's a um, you know, you got liar, lunatic, or lord, um, demon, what's the uh is there an L word?
00:06:15.199 --> 00:06:17.199
Lucifer be the Yeah.
00:06:17.680 --> 00:06:18.560
Lucifer, there you go.
00:06:19.040 --> 00:06:20.480
You know, so go with that.
00:06:20.480 --> 00:06:26.720
Um that's the way we could kind of be guilty of this today, um, in terms of the same principle.
00:06:26.720 --> 00:06:31.519
If we read about Jesus and the gospels and we go, yeah, that's satanic.
00:06:31.680 --> 00:06:31.920
Right.
00:06:32.079 --> 00:06:34.000
Then of course you're not gonna put your faith in him.
00:06:34.399 --> 00:06:34.959
Um yeah.
00:06:34.959 --> 00:06:35.759
Yeah, okay.
00:06:35.759 --> 00:06:36.639
Um, all right.
00:06:36.639 --> 00:06:44.560
Let's talk about some of I I do think it was interesting that his his mom and brothers came to take him because they thought he was out of his mind.
00:06:44.560 --> 00:06:45.120
Yeah.
00:06:45.120 --> 00:06:49.839
Like he's got a huge following.
00:06:49.839 --> 00:07:00.879
And is it and his mom had the promise of an angel come and visit her and prophesy all these things?
00:07:00.879 --> 00:07:04.000
And at what point is that the brothers jealous?
00:07:04.000 --> 00:07:04.959
What is that?
00:07:06.000 --> 00:07:12.240
Yeah, um, man, there it says the crowd gathered again so that they could not even eat.
00:07:12.240 --> 00:07:16.240
Um there is a huge crowd following him now.
00:07:16.240 --> 00:07:23.600
Um, and it does, you know, it just doesn't give you any um any specific reason why they say he's out of his mind.
00:07:23.600 --> 00:07:26.560
You know, is it that he was choosing disciples?
00:07:26.560 --> 00:07:27.040
Yeah.
00:07:27.040 --> 00:07:31.199
Is it, you know, um what he said to the Pharisees?
00:07:31.199 --> 00:07:32.480
Like it just doesn't tell you.
00:07:32.480 --> 00:07:36.319
Um, but uh they're clearly taken aback by what's going on.
00:07:36.319 --> 00:07:37.360
They don't know how to process it.
00:07:37.360 --> 00:07:39.519
So this is because this is new for Jesus.
00:07:39.519 --> 00:07:45.360
You know, he had all throughout, he had been, you know, meek, humble, son of a carpenter.
00:07:45.360 --> 00:07:47.120
He was a carpenter himself.
00:07:47.120 --> 00:07:52.480
Uh, you know, he they he doesn't have this huge public ministry, public following until now.
00:07:52.480 --> 00:07:54.560
And now his family's going, what the heck is going on?
00:07:54.720 --> 00:07:56.480
However, can I can't first miracle?
00:07:56.480 --> 00:07:58.800
I mean, this is like we're like 50 miracles or so in.
00:07:58.800 --> 00:08:00.959
I don't know how many we're a bunch of miracles in.
00:08:00.959 --> 00:08:01.759
Yeah.
00:08:01.759 --> 00:08:03.680
John three.
00:08:03.680 --> 00:08:05.759
First miracle?
00:08:05.759 --> 00:08:06.560
Uh yeah.
00:08:06.560 --> 00:08:08.079
Water to it's two, isn't it?
00:08:08.079 --> 00:08:08.480
John two.
00:08:08.480 --> 00:08:09.279
John two, yeah.
00:08:09.279 --> 00:08:10.879
John two, water to wine.
00:08:10.879 --> 00:08:11.519
Yeah.
00:08:11.519 --> 00:08:14.240
Who asks him to do the miracle?
00:08:14.240 --> 00:08:14.879
Yeah.
00:08:14.879 --> 00:08:16.720
It's Jesus' mom.
00:08:16.720 --> 00:08:23.040
And in here, now, do you think that's like she's afraid for him and like he's gonna get himself killed?
00:08:23.040 --> 00:08:23.920
He doesn't know what he's doing.
00:08:23.920 --> 00:08:24.639
I knew he was special.
00:08:24.639 --> 00:08:25.600
I don't think he's that special.
00:08:25.600 --> 00:08:26.000
I don't know.
00:08:26.000 --> 00:08:34.399
I I wish I could figure out where her switcheroo happened where she wasn't as confident as she was in John 2.
00:08:34.639 --> 00:08:40.639
Yeah, yeah, because it's clearly she understood he was she knows what the angels told her.
00:08:40.639 --> 00:08:42.799
Yeah, she knew the prophecy, she knew he could do miracles.
00:08:42.799 --> 00:08:44.159
Yeah, full credit for that.
00:08:44.159 --> 00:08:44.799
Yeah.
00:08:44.799 --> 00:08:49.360
But um, it may be when the demon stuff starts happening, right?
00:08:49.360 --> 00:08:52.960
He's now casting out demons and all this, and now he's got a crowd.
00:08:52.960 --> 00:08:54.480
That's still new, right?
00:08:54.480 --> 00:08:56.720
That's rather new for his family to deal with.
00:08:56.879 --> 00:09:00.480
But anytime you can turn water into wine, you are gonna be a hit at parties.
00:09:00.480 --> 00:09:05.200
All right, all right, let's talk about uh some truths about the nature of man.
00:09:08.159 --> 00:09:09.200
Let's see.
00:09:09.200 --> 00:09:17.120
Um the fact that they're calling him out of his mind, yep, and or saying he's possessed by demons.
00:09:17.120 --> 00:09:23.759
Um, I think this shows the spiritual blindness of people um as those who are born spiritually dead.
00:09:23.759 --> 00:09:30.399
They saw God in the flesh doing God stuff and said he's crazy or he's demon-possessed.
00:09:30.799 --> 00:09:31.120
Okay.
00:09:31.120 --> 00:09:37.120
Uh the thing I saw is that that people have a need for control or a tendency to just want to control things.
00:09:37.120 --> 00:09:54.639
And the Pharisees were all excited about Jesus healing until he steps on the line of what the Pharisees had said was righteous and what was not righteous, and even into a gray area of talking healing, that's wild to me.
00:09:54.639 --> 00:10:00.240
But that's where they cross the line and they can't come back because he's not doing what they said.
00:10:00.240 --> 00:10:08.159
It reminds me of uh, I think Joshua 5, when Josh goes to the Lord of the Army of Hosts, are you for us or against us?
00:10:08.159 --> 00:10:11.919
He's like, No, but I come as the commander of the army of the Lord.
00:10:11.919 --> 00:10:19.600
And I think what Jesus is saying is like, you guys have your own rules, that's great, but I operate on a wholly different thing and I have authority over all y'all.
00:10:19.600 --> 00:10:20.799
Okay.
00:10:20.799 --> 00:10:25.600
What else did anything else on nature of man?
00:10:26.320 --> 00:10:29.600
Uh similar to kind of what you're just saying about you have your own rules.
00:10:29.600 --> 00:10:34.559
You see the nature of man with the um the uh uh what's it called?
00:10:34.559 --> 00:10:45.840
The Pharisees who were you know just looking for a way to accuse Jesus for breaking a uh you know a man-made tradition, a rule that they had kind of added to the Sabbath, and they're looking for a way to catch him.
00:10:45.840 --> 00:10:53.120
Um and so that just the heart of man to um you get get all caught up in man-made kind of um rules.
00:10:53.440 --> 00:10:53.759
Okay.
00:10:53.759 --> 00:10:55.679
How about character of God?
00:10:55.679 --> 00:11:02.960
Uh clearly Jesus is wanting to heal those who are sick and oppressed by evil.
00:11:02.960 --> 00:11:03.360
Yeah.
00:11:03.360 --> 00:11:04.799
Uh there's compassion.
00:11:04.799 --> 00:11:19.600
God is compassionate, and I just love how Jesus makes a point of healing people in spite of like everyone's need for like, hey, we can let the evil go for a little longer because it's not the right day for evil to be removed.
00:11:19.600 --> 00:11:20.559
Yeah, right.
00:11:21.600 --> 00:11:22.799
Yeah, that's good.
00:11:22.799 --> 00:11:28.639
Um again, uh man, I it I've I feel like I've brought this up so many times.
00:11:28.639 --> 00:11:29.600
Bring it up again.
00:11:29.600 --> 00:11:31.440
You verse 11.
00:11:31.440 --> 00:11:36.639
Um, the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, You are the son of God.
00:11:36.639 --> 00:11:37.200
I love it.
00:11:37.200 --> 00:11:44.480
I just the nature or the um nature and character of God really focusing in on who is Jesus here.
00:11:44.480 --> 00:11:47.759
Like it's just so clear in these gospels, like he's divine.
00:11:47.759 --> 00:11:56.879
Yeah, he is um God in the flesh, he's the son of God, he's no mere man, um, and he has authority even over the all the spiritual world.
00:11:57.120 --> 00:11:58.639
Okay, how about this last one?
00:11:58.639 --> 00:12:07.679
Uh God values people, he wants people to value being in his family versus a blood family.
00:12:07.679 --> 00:12:13.600
You know, he just you know what Jesus says, those who do the will of God are my my brother, my my mother, my sister.
00:12:13.600 --> 00:12:15.200
Kind of a wild statement.
00:12:15.519 --> 00:12:21.039
Okay, so you said being in his family versus being in a blood family.
00:12:21.039 --> 00:12:22.320
Or over, over, probably me.
00:12:22.320 --> 00:12:22.639
Over.
00:12:22.639 --> 00:12:27.519
Yeah, I would say I th I because I'm I I know what you meant, and that kind of is the way he he says it here.
00:12:27.519 --> 00:12:27.759
Yeah.
00:12:27.759 --> 00:12:35.200
But um think you can go too far with that to say, like, yeah, once you become a Christian, you have no obligations to your parents.
00:12:35.200 --> 00:12:55.200
And you know, that was the whole issue with Corbin that's gonna come up a little bit is like kind of neglecting your um earthly duty to your parents as a pietistic kind of like I'm so spiritual way that you neglect your wife or your children or your parents and some of these familial obligations that still remain in the kingdom, but your highest allegiance is to God.
00:12:55.519 --> 00:12:57.360
Okay, let's get some application.
00:12:57.360 --> 00:13:03.679
Uh do you have a sin to avoid, promise to claim, example to follow, command to obey, or knowledge to believe?
00:13:04.000 --> 00:13:06.159
Knowledge to believe, Jesus is the son of God.
00:13:06.480 --> 00:13:07.600
Oh, all right.
00:13:07.600 --> 00:13:09.200
Um, yeah, simple.
00:13:09.200 --> 00:13:10.399
Uh, how about this?
00:13:10.399 --> 00:13:11.759
Example of follow.
00:13:11.759 --> 00:13:24.559
Jesus shows mercy and compassion to those who are um withered hand or sick, some deformed, uh, guys that are demon-possessed, and he'll do it at his own expense.
00:13:24.559 --> 00:13:32.799
Meaning he will be ostracized so that those who are ostracized could end up in community.
00:13:33.039 --> 00:13:33.679
Yeah.
00:13:33.679 --> 00:13:40.159
And um another example to follow, um, do good on the Sabbath.
00:13:40.159 --> 00:13:40.960
Nice.
00:13:40.960 --> 00:13:56.639
Like let your Sunday worship experience not just be confined to, you know, an hour at a church service, but rather a full day of worship and mercy and doing good to others who are in need.
00:13:56.639 --> 00:13:57.360
Love it.
00:13:57.360 --> 00:13:59.039
Hey, thanks so much for watching.
00:13:59.120 --> 00:14:03.279
We'll see you tomorrow on a chapter a day.
