Carter Benjamin: Reclaiming Rock, Finding Faith, and the Spiritual Practice of SongwritingCarter Benjamin is an indie/alternative artist blending folk, gospel, and soul-infused rock. His music is rooted in storytelling, exploring themes of identity, resilience, and belonging. From his upbringing in Grand Cayman and Washington D.C. to his bold, genre-defying album Black Boys on the Radio Part II, Carter seeks to reclaim space for voices too often left out of the conversation. In this episode, Carter opens up about growing up being told rock music "wasn't for Black kids" — not just by peers, but by his own community. We trace his journey from a wannabe kid rapper in DC to a genre-defying artist whose TikTok moment with "Sticks and Stones" had Warner, Columbia, and Capitol Records calling overnight. He shares why he chose to stay independent, the divine inspiration behind his album Welcome to Sugarshack, and the challenge of sharing deeply personal art in a world that treats music as disposable content. We also explore Carter's spiritual life — from his roots in a multi-generational pastor's family to the Christian mysticism, Zen Buddhism, daily meditation, and Tao Te Ching readings that now shape his creative process. He speaks candidly about the terrifying experience of questioning the belief systems he was raised on, the nervous system work it takes to feel safe enough to just "do the work," and what it means to surrender to the process as both an artist and a parent.https://www.instagram.com/carterbenjamin/https://www.instagram.com/oneoverinfinitypodcast/https://www.instagram.com/rezasafinia/#spirituality #music #podcast
