INFORMAZIONI SU QUESTO EPISODIO
Karina Andersen’s season doesn’t start with a perfect training block, it starts with a hard reset. After closing out her track era at Colorado School of Mines, she steps away from school for breathing room, takes on Denali, and then spends months living in Chamonix to see what a true mountain town feels like day to day. We talk about the real pressure that can come with places like Chamonix and Boulder, where it’s easy to feel like you have to “earn” your time there with constant vert, big objectives, and public training proof.
Then the comeback gets loud. Karina spends the winter going all-in on ski mountaineering with almost zero running, and still shows up in Asia to race the Penang Sky Race in Malaysia and the Ueda Sky Race in Japan, taking 4th and 8th. We break down what heat and humidity do to pacing, why concrete downhills can shred your quads, how mud changes risk and speed, and why uphill fitness can return faster than downhill durability when you’ve been on skis for months.
The most important part is the mental side. Karina shares what it’s like to carry a tough DNF and panic mid-race, then rebuild confidence by changing the goal from “place” to “stay present.” We also get into her 2026-focused skyrunning plans, thoughts on UTMB and Golden Trail, and a wild new skill: learning to paraglide in Annecy, with a long-term dream of hike-and-fly racing like Red Bull X-Alps.
If you’re into skyrunning, trail running, mountain racing, ski mountaineering, or just figuring out the next chapter, this one hits. Subscribe, share it with a friend who needs a reset, and leave a review with your biggest takeaway.

So excited to welcome Karina Anderson back to the show.
00:00:05.759 --> 00:00:13.839
Karina was most recently eighth at the Ueda Sky Race in Japan and also got a fourth place finish at the Penang Sky Race.
00:00:14.320 --> 00:00:23.920
She has been on an absolute heater, and uh can't wait to see what she's gonna do with the rest of her season as uh she seems to be really good at this whole sky racing thing.
00:00:24.160 --> 00:00:27.199
Um very excited to see what her future holds on the sport.
00:00:27.359 --> 00:00:28.559
So I hope you guys enjoyed this one.
00:00:28.719 --> 00:00:30.239
We talked about a whole lot of stuff.
00:00:30.399 --> 00:00:38.880
She was kind enough to join me uh from one of her European adventures where she was doing some uh I think it was bass jumping she was learning how to do.
00:00:39.039 --> 00:00:44.240
Um just an absolute adrenaline junkie and an extremely talented athlete in our sport.
00:00:44.320 --> 00:00:45.679
So I hope you guys enjoy this one.
00:00:45.840 --> 00:00:47.759
Without further ado, Karina Anderson.
00:00:49.679 --> 00:00:50.320
Hey!
00:00:54.320 --> 00:01:07.040
This is the Steepstuff Podcast! Interrupting this episode to talk to you guys about Stetus Insoles, official partner of the Steep Stuff Podcast.
00:01:07.280 --> 00:01:09.599
How many of you athletes out there wear insoles?
00:01:09.920 --> 00:01:10.480
I do.
00:01:10.719 --> 00:01:20.560
Not only do I get a little performance boost, a whole lot of foot comfort, but I also get about a quarter inch to a half inch of height boost, which is a win-win-win, if you ask me.
00:01:20.959 --> 00:01:21.599
Doesn't matter.
00:01:21.760 --> 00:01:24.640
Run, ski, outdoor, multi-sport, and daily life.
00:01:24.799 --> 00:01:27.120
Cet us insoles have something for everyone.
00:01:27.280 --> 00:01:33.920
I alternate between the three feet protect and the three feet low to give me optimal comfort on uneven and technical terrain.
00:01:34.239 --> 00:01:36.400
Check them out online at CDUS.us.
00:01:36.959 --> 00:01:41.840
CDUS is the official footcare partner of Western States and UTMB.
00:01:42.159 --> 00:01:43.680
CDUS, your foot company.
00:01:45.280 --> 00:01:47.840
Karina Anderson, welcome to the Steep Stuff Podcast.
00:01:47.920 --> 00:01:48.560
How's it going?
00:01:48.799 --> 00:01:49.680
Good, how are you?
00:01:50.239 --> 00:01:50.480
Good.
00:01:50.640 --> 00:01:51.519
Stoked to catch up.
00:01:51.920 --> 00:02:04.159
It's been a minute, and uh it's been so fun kind of following your your adventures over the last few months, uh, you know, from from Malaysia to Japan, and now you know you're in Europe and lots of fun stuff to talk about.
00:02:04.239 --> 00:02:05.680
So how how are you doing?
00:02:06.000 --> 00:02:07.760
Um, I'm doing pretty good.
00:02:07.920 --> 00:02:16.319
Um it's definitely been I think last time we talked, I was still running for mine, so it's definitely been quite a change since then.
00:02:16.560 --> 00:02:20.639
So um I think good for sure, figuring things out, you know.
00:02:21.520 --> 00:02:22.240
Catch me up.
00:02:22.319 --> 00:02:32.159
What have you so since since you uh you know you're you're kind of on this new journey adventure now over the last like six months to a year, I think it's been about a year since we've chatted.
00:02:32.319 --> 00:02:35.199
Um yeah, catch me up on on what you've been up to.
00:02:35.520 --> 00:02:44.000
Yeah, um, so I finished out my track season at mines last year, and then I just dropped out of school.
00:02:44.240 --> 00:02:47.039
Um, I didn't finish my bachelor's degree.
00:02:47.280 --> 00:02:54.000
Um I am starting back actually this summer, um, just to finish that up there.
00:02:54.159 --> 00:02:55.919
Um, but yeah, I just needed some time away.
00:02:56.000 --> 00:02:57.439
So I took time off school.
00:02:57.520 --> 00:03:03.120
I oh, I I went to Denali um last May, June.
00:03:03.280 --> 00:03:04.719
I like forgot about that.
00:03:04.960 --> 00:03:11.439
Um that was definitely an adventure and it kind of knocked me out the rest of the summer running-wise.
00:03:11.680 --> 00:03:14.800
Um, but I did a few races last summer.
00:03:14.960 --> 00:03:17.919
Um nothing that went terribly well.
00:03:18.159 --> 00:03:21.120
I lived in Chamony for almost three months.
00:03:21.280 --> 00:03:22.960
Um so cool.
00:03:23.199 --> 00:03:30.240
Yeah, I kind of wanted to experience living in France to kind of test that out because I might do that in the future permanently.
00:03:30.400 --> 00:03:37.520
Um so yeah, I did that for three months, um, met a lot of cool people, had a lot of fun experiences, wasn't racing well though.
00:03:37.759 --> 00:03:41.280
Um I just had a lot going on, figuring things out.
00:03:41.520 --> 00:03:42.879
So that was cool.
00:03:43.039 --> 00:03:51.439
And then came back to Colorado, um, kind of impulse, decided to move up to Summit County um and lived in Breckenridge the whole winter.
00:03:51.520 --> 00:03:56.560
Um, I was a ski instructor and uh ski tech up in Breckenridge.
00:03:56.879 --> 00:04:00.479
Um, and I'll be ski patrolling at Keystone next winter.
00:04:00.560 --> 00:04:06.560
Um yeah, I did ski mo all winter.
00:04:06.800 --> 00:04:12.319
Um I just pretty much stopped running in November and switched entirely to scheme.
00:04:13.280 --> 00:04:16.959
Not even running to like maintain running fitness.
00:04:17.040 --> 00:04:19.199
It was like every time I was out, I was on my skis.
00:04:19.360 --> 00:04:23.920
Um and yeah, I did not run a step for over three months, which was crazy.
00:04:24.079 --> 00:04:26.879
Um did scheme, had some fun with it.
00:04:27.120 --> 00:04:31.279
Um yeah, I have a big year planned now.
00:04:31.600 --> 00:04:38.079
Um I'm yeah, still living up in Summit County when I get back, I think.
00:04:38.319 --> 00:04:42.480
Um and then yeah, see where I go from there.
00:04:42.560 --> 00:04:44.480
Um a lot of races on the schedule this year.
00:04:44.560 --> 00:04:56.560
I think I like originally had like 20 um all kinds of like hard races too, not like Shorel, but like all like sky races like on my schedule.
00:04:56.720 --> 00:05:03.439
I don't think they're all gonna happen, but like as I get tired, I think I'll cut some things out at the end of the season.
00:05:03.680 --> 00:05:09.920
Um, but yeah, I'm like a lot more stoked to be running again and feeling a lot better and racing mentally.
00:05:10.079 --> 00:05:17.199
So I'm really happy about that um and excited to see where it goes this season, especially after the break from running, too.
00:05:17.279 --> 00:05:23.920
I think coming back is like kind of helping me break through a like plateau I had for a really long time.
00:05:24.000 --> 00:05:26.079
So yeah, sometimes athletes need that.
00:05:26.160 --> 00:05:27.920
The time away can be really beneficial.
00:05:28.079 --> 00:05:36.240
And schemo, I mean, you develop you just you build an enormous base anyway, or continue to build on the enormous base that you already have, and you get super strong from it.
00:05:36.399 --> 00:05:39.759
So it's not like you're just sitting on the couch for for a bunch of months.
00:05:40.000 --> 00:05:42.480
Yeah, I feel like my uphill fitness is really great.
00:05:42.639 --> 00:05:45.680
Um, it's just uh the downhill specific aspect.
00:05:45.839 --> 00:05:47.920
Coming back to that is definitely a challenge.
00:05:48.000 --> 00:05:54.800
Um, something I'm still working, working with right now, running wise, just that and efficiency on the downhills.
00:05:54.959 --> 00:05:57.120
You kind of lose that when you're not running downhill.
00:05:57.279 --> 00:05:57.680
So yeah.
00:05:58.079 --> 00:05:58.399
Fair enough.
00:05:58.480 --> 00:05:59.920
Yeah, I mean you're banging the bones.
00:06:00.000 --> 00:06:04.800
It's gotta it's gotta be weird, like a totally weird movement after taking so much time off and then coming back.
00:06:05.040 --> 00:06:07.279
Yeah, and I kind of just threw myself into it.
00:06:07.360 --> 00:06:19.360
Like the sky race in Penang in Malaysia two weeks ago was the most vert I had done in a run in seven months by far, like by twice as much.
00:06:19.519 --> 00:06:22.399
Um, so I just like threw myself into it.
00:06:22.480 --> 00:06:24.560
There was a lot of concrete downhills in that too.
00:06:24.800 --> 00:06:26.160
Um, it was weird.
00:06:26.240 --> 00:06:32.560
Um, and then the Japan race was like 10,000 feet, so it was like three times the amount of vert I had done in like seven years.
00:06:32.720 --> 00:06:33.360
Holy, holy.
00:06:34.720 --> 00:06:35.279
That's crazy.
00:06:35.519 --> 00:06:37.680
Um, but you know, right back into it now.
00:06:37.839 --> 00:06:40.240
So yeah, yeah, you're doing the thing now.
00:06:40.639 --> 00:06:41.920
I want to rewind a little bit.
00:06:42.000 --> 00:06:44.959
I just want to ask you about like your time in Shamani and like living there.
00:06:45.279 --> 00:06:47.519
What was it like being because it's one thing to go and visit.
00:06:47.600 --> 00:06:58.959
I know a lot of athletes that listen to this podcast have either been there for UTMB week or or been there for one reason or another, but it's a whole nother thing to like immerse yourself into the culture and and actually live there for the three months.
00:06:59.120 --> 00:07:03.120
It's funny, I actually just had an athlete on yesterday, Simon, uh Simon Kearns.
00:07:03.199 --> 00:07:08.000
I don't know if you've met him, but he yeah, he just was living there as well.
00:07:08.160 --> 00:07:13.519
So it's interesting that uh cool to see so many athletes kind of going back and forth and getting to see what that's all about.
00:07:13.759 --> 00:07:15.600
Yeah, no, Chamonix is really cool.
00:07:15.680 --> 00:07:16.399
Um that's funny.
00:07:16.480 --> 00:07:22.879
I the first time I met Simon, I think we ran up Mont Blanc together with um another guy in Boulder.
00:07:23.040 --> 00:07:24.560
Um that was like three years ago.
00:07:24.720 --> 00:07:30.480
So um, yeah, um we uh Chamonix was really cool living there.
00:07:30.720 --> 00:07:38.959
Um it's it just feels kind of like I don't know, it feels like another home, which is really nice.
00:07:39.199 --> 00:07:46.240
Um and it's fun to see it in the quiet season after like August is the really busy month for Chamini.
00:07:46.480 --> 00:07:49.439
Everyone's like August is hectic because of UTMB.
00:07:49.680 --> 00:07:52.639
Um and then September quiets, it's really quiet.
00:07:52.800 --> 00:07:55.360
And yeah, it was really fun, like building a community.
00:07:55.439 --> 00:08:04.480
I was doing a lot of climbing, um more chill kind of climbing, not like attacking things like Denali because I needed a break after that.
00:08:04.639 --> 00:08:09.120
Um yeah, just having fun with that, meeting a lot of new people.
00:08:09.439 --> 00:08:19.680
Um and I kind of did it because I'm like thinking about a move to this, the house of region in the future.
00:08:19.839 --> 00:08:23.680
Um, and I kind of wanted to get it vibe, and it's it is hard.
00:08:23.839 --> 00:08:26.399
Like I was really bad at French.
00:08:26.639 --> 00:08:30.879
Um I mean Shamney's nice because everyone speaks English in Chamney.
00:08:31.199 --> 00:08:35.919
The my instructors right now, they're like Chamney is the English colony of France.
00:08:36.080 --> 00:08:43.360
Um but it um it was still like hard not like knowing the language, but it's definitely really easy to integrate.
00:08:43.440 --> 00:08:45.519
There's a lot of people there who just love the mountains.
00:08:45.679 --> 00:08:48.399
So um yeah, it's really fun being there.
00:08:49.440 --> 00:08:52.399
It's interesting to me because like you've you've obviously spent time in Boulder.
00:08:52.559 --> 00:09:01.679
Boulder is like our American impromptu mecca, if you will, with so many professional athletes from the trail scene, the ski scene, scenes all over the place.
00:09:01.919 --> 00:09:02.240
Yeah.
00:09:02.720 --> 00:09:08.559
Dichotomy though, from like pressure to get out and do shit, like it did is it two different worlds?
00:09:08.720 --> 00:09:12.559
Or is like Shamini more laid back or like heart more hardcore than Boulder?
00:09:12.960 --> 00:09:19.039
I think like the like amount of people like out there and doing shit is really similar.
00:09:19.279 --> 00:09:27.519
The like Wong Wong Massif is just like huge compared to the like in terms of climbing and skiing stuff.
00:09:27.759 --> 00:09:36.000
You can do some hardcore climbing and skiing stuff in Colorado, but it's it's still not like the stuff around Chamonix, um, per se.
00:09:36.480 --> 00:09:39.919
So in those regards, it's a little more extreme.
00:09:41.039 --> 00:09:45.919
Trail running, I mean, yeah, you have like like the vertical gain.
00:09:46.000 --> 00:09:49.840
Like I come to Chamonix and I'm like, oh, it's so easy for me to run up like 5,000 feet.
00:09:49.919 --> 00:09:53.440
Whereas in Boulder, I'm like, where am I gonna get 5,000 feet in five miles?
00:09:53.519 --> 00:09:54.960
I don't exactly know.
00:09:55.120 --> 00:10:02.639
Um, so it is like you have like more options for like bigger running, but it feels like similar the trail scene.
00:10:02.799 --> 00:10:06.879
It feels like there's less of a trail community there, I would say.
00:10:06.960 --> 00:10:11.200
It's bigger for like the mountain skiing and climbing kind of stuff.
00:10:11.360 --> 00:10:15.600
Um, whereas Boulder has like so many teams for running.
00:10:15.840 --> 00:10:19.360
Um that is like definitely one difference I see there.
00:10:19.519 --> 00:10:19.759
Yeah.
00:10:20.080 --> 00:10:20.559
Interesting.
00:10:20.799 --> 00:10:22.960
Yeah, it's uh yeah, because I always I don't know.
00:10:23.039 --> 00:10:24.559
I have obviously we we all do.
00:10:24.639 --> 00:10:26.320
I have a lot of friends that live in Boulder.
00:10:26.559 --> 00:10:32.879
And the the question that I always bring up is like, do you ever feel like especially for the professional athletes, like I've asked Kyle Richardson this a couple times.
00:10:32.960 --> 00:10:42.559
I'm like, do you ever feel pressure to like have to go do stuff or put stuff on your Instagram or your um more so Strava to keep all that stuff public and what you're doing?
00:10:42.799 --> 00:10:53.120
And I would just feel an immense amount of pressure living there just because it's I mean, obviously Great Trails, it's world class, but there's just so much going on that you you always there's always something to do, you know.
00:10:53.360 --> 00:10:58.480
Yeah, I kind of felt like I needed to be like out there like climbing shit and running shit every day.
00:10:58.639 --> 00:11:05.200
Like you do feel that pressure for sure, and I'm like, I need to make the most of my time here because I'm only here for three months on the Schengen, whatever.
00:11:05.440 --> 00:11:09.279
So, like, yeah, you definitely feel that pressure there too.
00:11:09.440 --> 00:11:13.519
Um, but I mean there's a lot of opportunity to just get out there and get after it, which is really cool.
00:11:13.679 --> 00:11:14.720
Um very cool.
00:11:15.840 --> 00:11:17.840
So, all right, let's uh let's shift gears a little bit.
00:11:18.000 --> 00:11:27.039
Want to get into your racing, uh, two giant sky races that you've had success at just right off the bat, fourth at Penyang and eighth at Ueda in Japan.
00:11:27.200 --> 00:11:29.759
Yeah, how was it getting to see some of these new countries?
00:11:29.840 --> 00:11:32.559
Like obviously getting to see Malaysia and then Japan.
00:11:32.720 --> 00:11:36.320
Uh as far as both events go, uh how would you rate it?
00:11:36.399 --> 00:11:37.840
Was it was it super fun?
00:11:38.159 --> 00:11:40.159
Uh did you have a good time, bad time?
00:11:40.320 --> 00:11:43.039
Like how would you and then we'll talk about performance and stuff like that too.
00:11:43.200 --> 00:11:43.840
Yeah, totally.
00:11:44.000 --> 00:11:49.600
Um it was I definitely I chose these races because I've never been to Asia before, so I really wanted to check it out.
00:11:49.759 --> 00:12:01.360
Um, and I I saw this like post on Facebook five or six weeks ago with someone like in this really sick location climbing in Thailand.
00:12:01.600 --> 00:12:02.879
I was like, I want to go there.
00:12:02.960 --> 00:12:08.480
So I was like, I'm gonna plan this into my whole like racing schedule in Southeast Asia here.
00:12:08.639 --> 00:12:10.559
So Malaysia was super cool.
00:12:10.720 --> 00:12:16.320
I mean Penong is a Penang is one of the richest areas in Southeast Asia.
00:12:16.559 --> 00:12:22.000
Um, so it is a very nice city, and the park where the race is at was really nice.
00:12:22.080 --> 00:12:24.240
I really like the rainforest courses a lot.
00:12:24.399 --> 00:12:31.759
It's super fun, it's really different, um really hot and humid, um, which was a change from Colorado.
00:12:31.840 --> 00:12:39.919
I didn't do a ton of heat training going into this race, but I tend to do well in the hot, humid races, so I wasn't super concerned.
00:12:40.000 --> 00:12:41.120
I kind of enjoyed it.
00:12:41.200 --> 00:12:42.720
I like not being cold.
00:12:42.879 --> 00:12:51.600
Um so that was really nice, and that race was really well um, really well marked, really well organized, really fun event.
00:12:51.759 --> 00:12:54.000
Um, I definitely recommend it.
00:12:54.240 --> 00:12:59.279
The course I didn't expect it to have a lot of concrete.
00:12:59.519 --> 00:13:06.080
A lot of the trails were kind of like these super narrow like roads almost.
00:13:06.320 --> 00:13:09.679
I passed this like dirt biker trying to go up one of them.
00:13:09.840 --> 00:13:11.519
It was like almost a road, almost a trail.
00:13:11.600 --> 00:13:12.240
It was a lot of that.
00:13:12.320 --> 00:13:14.879
So it was a lot of like slamming on the downhills.
00:13:15.120 --> 00:13:22.240
Um but still like super fun course, um, really nice people, great food in Penang as well.
00:13:22.320 --> 00:13:23.759
Um really talk about that.
00:13:24.240 --> 00:13:26.000
Kind of what what what what's the cuisine like?
00:13:26.240 --> 00:13:32.879
They don't have like I feel like they don't have their own cuisine, but they have a lot of really good, like all different Asian cuisines there.
00:13:33.039 --> 00:13:35.120
It's kind of like the food capital of Malaysia.
00:13:35.360 --> 00:13:40.799
So like had really good hot pot, really good Indian food there.
00:13:41.600 --> 00:13:43.600
Um, some really good noodles.
00:13:43.919 --> 00:13:50.000
Yeah, it was like a really good, like really good just like from everywhere in that area for sure.
00:13:50.240 --> 00:13:53.120
Um and I didn't spend much time there.
00:13:53.279 --> 00:13:56.159
I got there two days before the race and left the day after.
00:13:56.320 --> 00:14:01.039
So I went to Thailand to go take a boat out to the islands to go climb it.
00:14:01.200 --> 00:14:03.840
It's a place I saw on Facebook, which was super fucking cool.
00:14:04.080 --> 00:14:05.039
Um sorry.
00:14:05.200 --> 00:14:13.200
Um it was really fun to go out there and just like see the like classic Thailand beach in real life.
00:14:13.279 --> 00:14:14.879
I was like, oh my gosh, I'm climbing here.
00:14:14.960 --> 00:14:16.799
And the feels like temperature was 110.
00:14:16.960 --> 00:14:22.879
Um off season there now because it's so hot, but super fun.
00:14:23.360 --> 00:14:28.399
Um, and then I went over to Japan, nice temperature there finally.
00:14:28.559 --> 00:14:33.360
Um Japan was different than the rest of Southeast Asia.
00:14:33.440 --> 00:14:38.159
Obviously, Japan's up there, totally different like country economy, whatever.
00:14:38.320 --> 00:14:43.759
Um, it was my first time in Japan too, so um, that was also a super cool experience.
00:14:44.000 --> 00:14:45.919
Um a lot more calm.
00:14:46.080 --> 00:14:48.080
I was very over overstimulated.
00:14:48.320 --> 00:14:52.480
Um Malaysia and Thailand, but then Japan was like, okay, calm.
00:14:52.720 --> 00:15:07.360
Um the race was the course for the race there was very honestly like similar to some of the trails here, um, down low in terms of like the forest um steepness and stuff.
00:15:07.679 --> 00:15:11.360
Um and yeah, the culture is really fun experience.
00:15:11.519 --> 00:15:12.639
Great sushi.
00:15:12.960 --> 00:15:16.080
Um went down to Kyoto after the race.
00:15:16.240 --> 00:15:24.480
Um got a tour from one of the other U20 or one of the U-23 Skyrunners um showed me around, which is cool, who lived there.
00:15:24.639 --> 00:15:28.240
Um, and yeah, also a lot of cool people I met on that one.
00:15:28.480 --> 00:15:41.200
That race is super fun because afterwards um they like invite you to an Izakaya um bar, and then we all go to karaoke, and it's really fun.
00:15:41.519 --> 00:15:43.120
I think I was out to like 1 a.m.
00:15:43.279 --> 00:15:45.360
there it was it was a super fun night after that race.
00:15:45.519 --> 00:15:47.360
The Japanese are really fun.
00:15:47.519 --> 00:15:48.960
So that's awesome.
00:15:49.200 --> 00:15:51.039
Yeah, I've heard Japan's incredible.
00:15:51.120 --> 00:15:55.919
I I have to get over there one of these years to do a race or just to just to see it because I've heard just amazing.
00:15:56.000 --> 00:15:56.960
Like everything from the food.
00:15:57.120 --> 00:16:01.440
Apparently, the second best pizza place on planet Earth is in Japan.
00:16:01.600 --> 00:16:03.919
Yeah, it's like I think it's in what the Mandarin Hotel.
00:16:04.000 --> 00:16:06.240
I can't be in the Mandarin Hotel in Tokyo.
00:16:06.399 --> 00:16:08.559
Um, it's supposed to be super legit.
00:16:08.720 --> 00:16:15.919
But uh there's like good prices, great sushi.
00:16:16.159 --> 00:16:19.360
I had I was like, I'm gonna get mercury poisoning this week, but it's fine.
00:16:21.519 --> 00:16:26.240
Does it interest you to go back and because I've heard the skiing in Japan, like northern Japan's insane.
00:16:26.559 --> 00:16:27.279
Yeah, I would love to.
00:16:27.679 --> 00:16:37.919
I think all my friends went to Japan this year to ski because the snow was so bad in Colorado, and I was like, I don't have the money for this, but yeah, I would want to get out there um and ski sometime in the future.
00:16:38.000 --> 00:16:38.720
It'd be super cool.
00:16:38.879 --> 00:16:43.840
The powder, I need to get better at powder skiing, but I hear that's like their main thing here.
00:16:43.919 --> 00:16:44.159
There.
00:16:44.799 --> 00:16:53.519
It's so interesting because when people think of Japan, I think they more folks think of like more uh subtropical, warm kind of you know, like more humid.
00:16:53.679 --> 00:16:56.799
People don't think of uh skiing when it comes to Japan or grizzly bears.
00:16:56.879 --> 00:16:59.200
Apparently they have grizzly bears up there too, like in the north.
00:16:59.919 --> 00:17:04.400
Yeah, people are getting like it's like I just read a whole article about like people getting sucked up by grizzly bears up there.
00:17:04.480 --> 00:17:05.039
It's pretty wild.
00:17:06.640 --> 00:17:07.279
So yeah.
00:17:07.599 --> 00:17:10.079
What did you think as far as uh performance-wise?
00:17:10.240 --> 00:17:20.640
Where you I mean you've had a fourth place at Pinyang, eighth place at UAD uh, two incredible results, especially coming off just a full ski season where you're kind of re-immersing yourself back into running again.
00:17:20.799 --> 00:17:23.039
Uh, you gotta be really stoked on those results.
00:17:23.279 --> 00:17:31.119
Yeah, um, going into it, I was like with Penong, I was like, I just need to finish this race and not have like a mental breakdown during it.
00:17:31.279 --> 00:17:38.160
Um, my last race, uh UTMB whistler, I did not finish.
00:17:38.400 --> 00:17:49.599
I like had a panic attack mid-race, I freaked out, and I was super far from an aid station, which was bad, and it was super cold, really bad conditions.
00:17:49.839 --> 00:17:52.160
So wasn't a good time.
00:17:52.400 --> 00:17:59.440
Um, so I was like, I just need to get through Penong, have a good race, like mentally stay in it.
00:17:59.599 --> 00:18:01.359
And like my result does not matter.
00:18:01.440 --> 00:18:04.559
I was like telling myself that I'm like, I'm just here, I'm just running, I'm just having fun.
00:18:04.640 --> 00:18:05.599
This is really cool.
00:18:05.920 --> 00:18:07.039
Result doesn't matter.
00:18:07.279 --> 00:18:11.920
Um, so I kind of just went into that race doing my own thing.
00:18:12.160 --> 00:18:15.759
I was like, okay, there goes Eleanor, like, bye.
00:18:15.920 --> 00:18:18.880
Um, like letting everyone do whatever they want.
00:18:19.039 --> 00:18:20.960
Um, and then I was running pretty well.
00:18:21.039 --> 00:18:25.759
I was running in third before up through the giant steps.
00:18:25.839 --> 00:18:35.440
There's like 2,500 feet of steps, and like the second climb, you just all the way up this hill in steps.
00:18:35.519 --> 00:18:37.599
So I was running in third through that point.
00:18:37.839 --> 00:18:42.240
Um, and then a girl passed me and I was like, darn, I'm in fourth.
00:18:42.319 --> 00:18:44.079
And I was like, I kind of want to race now.
00:18:44.319 --> 00:18:47.920
Um, so yeah, I was I was pretty happy with that.
00:18:48.000 --> 00:18:52.640
I couldn't catch her because I got like hit with the heat, and I was like, uh, whatever.
00:18:53.359 --> 00:18:59.440
But um the downhills were really getting me by the end of that, just banging on my quads.
00:18:59.599 --> 00:19:06.240
I was like jogging on these downhills because I'm like, I can't usually I'm like the type to stand the downhills.
00:19:06.319 --> 00:19:11.039
Like that was my specialty in sky running two years ago, is like just hucking myself.
00:19:11.279 --> 00:19:17.440
I couldn't like my leg muscles aren't there for that right now, but I was super happy with fourth there.
00:19:17.680 --> 00:19:23.599
Um I was worried going into Ueda that I wouldn't be recovered from that.
00:19:23.839 --> 00:19:27.440
Um and I basically did not run much.
00:19:27.599 --> 00:19:39.519
My coach wanted me to do some vertical running between Penang and Ueda, but I was so knocked out from Penong that I like really couldn't do much at all that week.
00:19:39.759 --> 00:19:43.759
Um and I was still feeling it two days before Ueda.
00:19:44.319 --> 00:19:48.240
Um I think I did feel it a bit during Ueda as well.
00:19:48.480 --> 00:19:52.799
Um but still pretty happy with that performance.
00:19:53.039 --> 00:19:56.880
Um I didn't expect it to be so long.
00:19:57.039 --> 00:20:04.880
The course this year for Ueda was um really muddy, and it's not usually like that, and so that slowed people down a bit.
00:20:05.119 --> 00:20:18.880
Um it was kind of like a slip and slide for a lot of it, and pretty scary, like going uphill, like it would be so muddy and so steep you'd like slide back, and you're just like clawing into the mud to like not like slide back.
00:20:18.960 --> 00:20:21.680
Like you got slick mud on like a 40% grade going up.
00:20:21.759 --> 00:20:22.799
It's like, oh shoot.
00:20:22.960 --> 00:20:26.319
Um, but yeah, it was it was still a super fun race.
00:20:26.480 --> 00:20:40.000
I tried to like hut the downhills a little more and was kind of like trying to race it, um, but also just trying to survive because I knew that would be a long time out there, and then I could feel it after like three and a half, four hours.
00:20:40.319 --> 00:20:45.039
Um, kind of where I crossed that like the elevation gain of Penong was like 7,000 feet.
00:20:45.119 --> 00:20:51.359
And when I like crossed that you with UIO and was like, oh my god, I still have another 3,000 feet to like climb and descend.
00:20:51.440 --> 00:20:57.119
I was like, I'm just gonna have to like cross his finish line right now.
00:20:57.359 --> 00:21:07.119
So yeah, I definitely died off after that, but survived, and I was pretty happy with that for like not having much running under me.
00:21:07.599 --> 00:21:07.839
Yeah.
00:21:08.079 --> 00:21:09.440
I mean, two amazing results.
00:21:09.519 --> 00:21:12.559
I mean, enough, like you're probably already like right in the mix.
00:21:12.799 --> 00:21:21.200
Obviously, you'll get an invite for the final, and you know, you're right in the mix for you know, probably top, I don't know, top three, top two in the rankings, maybe four.
00:21:21.279 --> 00:21:21.920
I don't know, somewhere.
00:21:22.160 --> 00:21:28.319
Oh no, I'm definitely I feel like I feel like I'm probably I'm definitely in the top 20 in the rankings, but I don't know.
00:21:28.720 --> 00:21:32.480
Some people have done like four races already, three or four races, I think.
00:21:32.720 --> 00:21:33.519
But yeah.
00:21:33.759 --> 00:21:36.480
Or like Sarah Alonso won both the races.
00:21:36.799 --> 00:21:41.039
I think I'd be I think I'd be somewhere maybe around definitely top twenty for sure.
00:21:41.200 --> 00:21:41.920
Yeah, definitely top.
00:21:42.400 --> 00:21:45.119
But for you for U23, you're definitely like top.
00:21:45.279 --> 00:21:46.960
Oh top three.
00:21:47.119 --> 00:21:47.200
Yeah.
00:21:47.519 --> 00:21:49.200
Because they're U23 separate.
00:21:49.440 --> 00:21:52.079
So I chose to do the senior series this year.
00:21:52.319 --> 00:21:59.039
Um, I put it on U23 because I turned twenty-three this year.
00:21:59.200 --> 00:22:08.079
Um And like you can still do it if you turn twenty-three that year, but I wanted to do longer races, so I just do the senior ones instead.
00:22:08.640 --> 00:22:10.079
I think it's better, in my opinion.
00:22:10.240 --> 00:22:12.960
It's better, especially if you're doing this well at them.
00:22:13.119 --> 00:22:16.319
It's like why would you do the two when you can spoil them?
00:22:16.400 --> 00:22:21.359
I'm I'm not fast enough for the 23 ones, so um I'll let the let the kids run fast.
00:22:22.000 --> 00:22:23.039
But yeah.
00:22:24.079 --> 00:22:25.200
That's funny.
00:22:25.440 --> 00:22:28.079
Um shift gears a little bit.
00:22:28.160 --> 00:22:30.079
I want to talk about some plans for the upcoming season.
00:22:30.160 --> 00:22:33.599
I know I saw in your ultra sign up you'll be going back to Broken Arrow.
00:22:33.680 --> 00:22:36.400
You'll be at Beast of Big Creek, Whiteface.
00:22:36.480 --> 00:22:44.240
Um, I know we talked a little bit about it, and you said you had a ton of races planned, but uh, I'd say like of the races that you're gonna be doing, what has you the most excited?
00:22:44.400 --> 00:22:46.640
Like what's uh of the most interest?
00:22:47.039 --> 00:22:49.359
Um, I'm really trying to get into chema.
00:22:50.079 --> 00:22:56.240
Um I don't know everyone everyone wants to get into chema and like talking to other skyrunners.
00:22:56.319 --> 00:23:03.359
They're like, I said I wanted to go to chema, but I haven't heard anything because like everyone wants to do it, so I don't think they're gonna let everyone in.
00:23:03.599 --> 00:23:14.319
Um my goal would be to do like really well in that, and I would like probably like center this next block of my season on doing really well at chema.
00:23:14.640 --> 00:23:18.480
Um, and that would have me really excited, but like pending whether I get in.
00:23:18.720 --> 00:23:22.880
So um I'm definitely more excited about stuff at the end of the season.
00:23:23.119 --> 00:23:26.000
Um chema is one of the things.
00:23:26.240 --> 00:23:30.240
Um doing world sky running championships.
00:23:30.400 --> 00:23:35.119
Um, I'm doing the VK sky race for the US and La Gomera.
00:23:35.680 --> 00:23:37.839
Um, so I am excited about that.
00:23:37.920 --> 00:23:39.920
I think that'll be super cool.
00:23:40.720 --> 00:23:47.839
Um yeah, I'm not super excited about broken arrow because I looked at the signup list.
00:23:48.000 --> 00:23:48.880
I was gonna ask you about that.
00:23:49.119 --> 00:23:53.599
I looked at the sign-up list and I'm like, oh my god, everyone is in that race.
00:23:54.079 --> 00:23:57.440
I've never run well at the Broken Arrow 23K.
00:23:57.680 --> 00:24:00.880
Um I wish I could run well there, but I don't know.
00:24:00.960 --> 00:24:02.400
It's it's very fast.
00:24:02.799 --> 00:24:04.640
Um I was gonna say it's not a real sky.
00:24:05.039 --> 00:24:07.279
I mean, listen, like I really like broken arrow, like I'll be there.
00:24:07.440 --> 00:24:07.519
Yeah.
00:24:07.599 --> 00:24:07.920
Oh, yeah.
00:24:08.559 --> 00:24:13.359
In terms of sky racing, it's not really a real sky race, it's just a course in America.
00:24:13.599 --> 00:24:15.039
Yeah, and you climb up a ladder.
00:24:15.200 --> 00:24:18.559
Um, like it's yeah, so it's it's just like a fast race.
00:24:18.640 --> 00:24:23.519
And I'm like, oh gosh, and then I see the sign-up list, and I'm like, I hope I get 50th.
00:24:23.759 --> 00:24:35.200
Um, but yeah, I think try to PR um run faster than last year, which shouldn't be asking for much because last year I ran that like coming off Denali.
00:24:35.759 --> 00:24:42.799
Um, so yeah, just PR and have a good race and catch up with everyone there at Broken Arrow.
00:24:42.960 --> 00:24:43.279
Yeah.
00:24:43.519 --> 00:24:50.880
Um yeah, it's Broken Arrow is a funny one because it's like uh it's more of a big meeting of friends than it is like anybody caring.
00:24:50.960 --> 00:24:52.880
Like obviously the races are important and fun.
00:24:53.039 --> 00:24:53.440
Oh yeah.
00:24:53.519 --> 00:24:58.880
Um but it's I think even the community aspect of it's probably to me at least a little bit more fun, you know?
00:24:59.200 --> 00:25:00.000
Yeah, for sure.
00:25:00.079 --> 00:25:09.359
Yeah, and I was trying to do like some golden trail stuff this year, but it didn't quite work out them requiring like four races now.
00:25:09.759 --> 00:25:17.359
Um and then with whatever happened, them not having like another North American race, um, that made it really tricky.
00:25:17.440 --> 00:25:21.680
So I'm doing Ledro Sky Race next week.
00:25:21.920 --> 00:25:26.240
Um I'm not like part of the Golden Trail part of it.
00:25:26.480 --> 00:25:27.519
I didn't ask.
00:25:27.680 --> 00:25:33.279
I didn't really, I was like, I don't I don't know if I want like they kind of intimidate me in the golden trail like section.
00:25:33.440 --> 00:25:38.640
I'm like, I'll just like start with the rest of the people and run fast, I guess.
00:25:38.799 --> 00:25:41.839
Like um, but yeah, I'm doing that.
00:25:42.559 --> 00:25:49.599
Otherwise, I was like thinking about doing trying to do the Asian Golden Trail races in September, but I don't think I will.
00:25:50.160 --> 00:25:50.880
But yeah.
00:25:51.440 --> 00:25:51.759
Be cool.
00:25:51.920 --> 00:25:53.279
So Kima would be really cool.
00:25:55.440 --> 00:26:00.319
Yeah, I'm in it, but yeah, no, I was gonna say Kima's amazing.
00:26:00.400 --> 00:26:02.319
I mean, that's it especially for 2026.
00:26:02.400 --> 00:26:12.079
Like, this is you know, the fact that it only comes around every other year obviously makes it a little more exciting, plus the fact that it's like I don't know, the kind of the sky race of sky races in a lot of ways.
00:26:12.400 --> 00:26:14.079
Like it's just iconic ores.
00:26:14.400 --> 00:26:15.519
Yeah, totally.
00:26:16.400 --> 00:26:17.599
Yeah, the helmet thing.
00:26:17.680 --> 00:26:20.799
That kind of throws me off as having to wear a helmet the whole time, but still kind of neat.
00:26:20.880 --> 00:26:21.279
I don't know.
00:26:21.440 --> 00:26:21.759
Yeah.
00:26:25.200 --> 00:26:26.240
Yeah, yeah.
00:26:26.480 --> 00:26:31.440
Um, what's your take on uh us having a a sky race in the United States now with beast at Big Creek?
00:26:31.519 --> 00:26:35.839
Does that is that exciting and enticing or yeah, I mean it is really exciting.
00:26:36.000 --> 00:26:39.039
I hadn't heard about the race before that was like a thing.
00:26:39.279 --> 00:26:42.559
Um but it is it is nice that they brought it.
00:26:42.640 --> 00:26:46.880
I think the fact that they have like the whole Skyrunner US series this year is really cool.
00:26:47.119 --> 00:26:49.920
Um the Alaskan race looks really cool.
00:26:50.240 --> 00:27:04.640
I wish I could do that, but if I was doing uh that would be like uh like marathon and 14,000 feet, and then the next weekend would be Alaska race, which is almost a marathon and like 12,000 feet of gain or something.
00:27:04.720 --> 00:27:06.160
I'm like, I don't think I can do that.
00:27:06.319 --> 00:27:09.680
Um even with like training.
00:27:09.839 --> 00:27:15.759
Um so but yeah, it's real I think it's really cool just that they have the whole series back in the US.
00:27:15.839 --> 00:27:19.519
I know it was like a huge thing 10 years ago.
00:27:19.839 --> 00:27:23.599
Um I don't I don't know much about the history of skyrunning in the US.
00:27:23.680 --> 00:27:34.559
I'm like I feel like Morgan Elliott knows like was mentioning like how it was like a big thing um or used to be a big thing and then like isn't anymore.
00:27:34.799 --> 00:27:45.039
But it'll be cool to see and like having the top three from that series go to skyrunning um the finals, Marito Dels Dements, um would be is super cool.
00:27:45.119 --> 00:27:46.720
So I'm just stoked on that.
00:27:46.960 --> 00:27:48.799
Um beast of big creature.
00:27:49.119 --> 00:27:50.079
Heard it here first, by the way.
00:27:50.160 --> 00:27:51.599
That's that hasn't that's not public yet.
00:27:51.680 --> 00:27:52.960
So yeah.
00:27:53.200 --> 00:27:54.960
I'm glad someone put it out there.
00:27:55.759 --> 00:27:59.920
Oh, I I saw it somewhere publicly, I thought the that the first top three.
00:28:00.480 --> 00:28:03.279
At least I I I dude they haven't even announced the final yet.
00:28:03.359 --> 00:28:05.119
The final is supposed to be at uh Kismet.
00:28:05.279 --> 00:28:07.279
You also hear it, heard it here first.
00:28:07.519 --> 00:28:12.000
Um but yeah, it's uh I there's a few things they haven't announced yet.
00:28:12.240 --> 00:28:12.880
Oh, okay.
00:28:12.960 --> 00:28:13.359
Yeah.
00:28:13.599 --> 00:28:15.039
Um I don't know where that.
00:28:15.279 --> 00:28:17.680
Um so yeah, that that is super cool.
00:28:17.759 --> 00:28:21.200
I'm super stoked about the Be Civic Creek race.
00:28:21.279 --> 00:28:22.400
I like the Cascades.
00:28:22.640 --> 00:28:27.200
Um I was gonna work up there that this summer, but decided not to.
00:28:27.440 --> 00:28:38.079
Um But yeah, I've heard the course like it's a little bit faster for a sky race, um, but it should be fun to see.
00:28:38.640 --> 00:28:44.319
Definitely won't be like 10,000 feet of gain like Weda, which might be nice.
00:28:44.480 --> 00:28:47.279
So yeah.
00:28:47.599 --> 00:28:48.319
No, for sure.
00:28:48.480 --> 00:28:50.160
It's uh it is definitely gonna be unique.
00:28:50.240 --> 00:28:57.039
I I don't know I just um I'm happy the fact that we have like an actual, especially with Golden Trail not being uh you know present in the US this year.
00:28:57.200 --> 00:29:00.400
Yeah, it's uh just a different dynamic, something for people to do, you know.
00:29:00.720 --> 00:29:01.920
Totally, yeah.
00:29:03.359 --> 00:29:03.920
Very cool.
00:29:04.079 --> 00:29:04.880
Oh very cool.
00:29:05.119 --> 00:29:12.799
It's uh yeah, I gotta ask you for you know looking at your kind of your background, stuff you'll be racing, like specifically sky running and these mountain races.
00:29:12.960 --> 00:29:15.039
I noticed you're not doing any UTMB races.
00:29:15.200 --> 00:29:15.920
I kind of like that.
00:29:16.000 --> 00:29:16.720
It's something different.
00:29:16.960 --> 00:29:18.960
I don't really done any UTMB races.
00:29:19.440 --> 00:29:25.839
I'm like pending, thinking about maybe signing up for Speed Goat if there's still even spots in the 50k.
00:29:26.000 --> 00:29:27.359
Um I didn't even look.
00:29:27.839 --> 00:29:29.279
I don't have any UTMB.
00:29:29.440 --> 00:29:38.319
That's also like the end of my year is kind of up in the air, so I might try to throw one in in November or December or something to qualify for next year.
00:29:39.359 --> 00:29:40.319
OCC.
00:29:40.559 --> 00:29:59.920
Um yeah, I mean I like I'm not not obsessed with UTMB, so I'm definitely like I kind of want to focus on the mountain side of things, and I was gonna do Sierra's and all this year, but then I was like, uh well, I I kind of missed the like registration thing for the elite entries, so it was like kind of my fault.
00:30:00.000 --> 00:30:01.920
It sent it to my other email, I didn't see it.
00:30:02.079 --> 00:30:08.000
Um but I'm like, oh maybe I'll like try to do the Matterhorn FKT instead.
00:30:08.160 --> 00:30:14.880
Um like actually go for that, maybe just focus more on like the technical mountain side of things.
00:30:15.039 --> 00:30:25.680
So and speak of it's is like a cool UTMB race, so it's pretty technical for a 50k hard lots of elevation gains, so that could be cool, it's just why I'm thinking about it.
00:30:25.759 --> 00:30:30.160
It would be hard um just being a week before Beast of Big Creek, though.
00:30:30.319 --> 00:30:34.799
So yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:30:34.960 --> 00:30:39.440
It would be fun to be part of the UTMB, like all that hype uh next year.
00:30:39.759 --> 00:30:51.680
Um yeah, I I like am thinking about making a move over here in like a year and a half, two years, so like maybe that next year or something, but yeah, it would be super cool.
00:30:52.720 --> 00:30:54.480
Yeah, very, very cool.
00:30:54.640 --> 00:30:57.680
Uh what's how are you liking Annecy where you're at right now?
00:30:57.839 --> 00:31:01.119
Um cool town, cool fun things to do, or I've been around.
00:31:01.440 --> 00:31:04.559
Yeah, so I'm here um because I'm learning how to paralyde.
00:31:04.720 --> 00:31:07.200
Um so I'm taking a introductory course.
00:31:07.279 --> 00:31:14.640
I did my first flight today solo, um, which was super cool, jumping off cliff um and like flying in the air.
00:31:16.079 --> 00:31:20.640
Yeah, I was like kind of scared, but then you get up there and you're like, wow, this is so cool.
00:31:20.880 --> 00:31:22.720
And now I don't have to run downhill all the time.
00:31:22.799 --> 00:31:24.960
I can just run up there and like fly off.
00:31:25.200 --> 00:31:27.119
So um, super cool.
00:31:27.359 --> 00:31:32.960
Um Annecy is a really sweet town, especially when you get out of the town and you like go farther down the lake.
00:31:33.119 --> 00:31:36.960
Um, all the villages are really nice and the mountains are really nice.
00:31:37.119 --> 00:31:39.119
My workout today was super fun.
00:31:39.279 --> 00:31:40.720
Um going up.
00:31:40.880 --> 00:31:43.279
They've got some some super cool stuff.
00:31:43.359 --> 00:31:44.079
Definitely underrated.
00:31:44.240 --> 00:31:48.160
There's a lot more to France, the French Alps, than like Chamony for sure.
00:31:48.559 --> 00:31:53.759
Um and I like NCM like looking at the university here too.
00:31:53.920 --> 00:31:55.920
So yeah, super nice town.
00:31:56.319 --> 00:31:56.720
Good area.
00:31:56.799 --> 00:31:59.680
I know Salamon like centers here too.
00:31:59.839 --> 00:32:01.759
So yeah.
00:32:02.000 --> 00:32:06.079
Yeah, quite a few brands have their uh kind of their their HQ there, which is neat.
00:32:06.240 --> 00:32:06.799
Yeah.
00:32:08.400 --> 00:32:09.119
Sweet.
00:32:10.079 --> 00:32:10.559
Yeah.
00:32:10.799 --> 00:32:11.119
Yeah.
00:32:11.279 --> 00:32:13.680
It's uh talk to me about this, the paragliding.
00:32:13.759 --> 00:32:15.839
Like what what is it like trying to learn?
00:32:15.920 --> 00:32:17.440
Like, especially being like brand new with us.
00:32:17.519 --> 00:32:21.920
Do you people people like are you strapped to someone or are you are you on your own?
00:32:22.240 --> 00:32:23.119
You're on your own.
00:32:23.279 --> 00:32:28.880
Last year when I was in Chamney, like when you go to Chamney, you see all the paragliders in the air.
00:32:29.039 --> 00:32:33.279
Like, there's sometimes there's hundreds of them when you get a day with like low wind and stuff.
00:32:33.440 --> 00:32:36.960
And I was like, wow, I like kind of want to do that.
00:32:37.119 --> 00:32:52.079
I used to think like I was like, no, paragliding injured, and then like living there last year, I was like, I kind of want to do that, but then I didn't like I didn't have the money and I didn't have the time, so I was like, let me just save up and think about doing it.
00:32:52.160 --> 00:33:03.279
And then I had this free week in Europe this week, and I was like, well, French is the birthplace of pair, France is the birthplace of paragraping, so I might as well do it this week while I'm here.
00:33:03.519 --> 00:33:08.160
Um and yeah, I you do like an introductory course.
00:33:08.400 --> 00:33:11.759
I think there are self-taught people, but I don't recommend that at all.
00:33:12.000 --> 00:33:16.319
Um and um the school I'm doing with it with is super good.
00:33:16.480 --> 00:33:21.680
You start like you get your harness and you have your wing.
00:33:21.920 --> 00:33:31.680
Um you start with just like learning the details of those, and then you do ground training, so you learn how to inflate the wing.
00:33:31.920 --> 00:33:36.960
Um and then what you're supposed to do, like break it, and then you learn how to run forward.
00:33:37.039 --> 00:33:38.480
The takeoff's a really important part.
00:33:38.559 --> 00:33:41.119
It's where you can mess up a lot of things with beginner gear.
00:33:41.279 --> 00:33:49.680
So you can't really mess up as much in the air as a beginner if you're flying in safe conditions, which is what you should be doing um when you're starting off.
00:33:49.920 --> 00:33:53.440
Um it's just practicing the takeoff, is what you learn.
00:33:53.519 --> 00:33:55.759
So you practice, practice, practice on the beginner hill.
00:33:55.839 --> 00:34:01.039
You don't take off, you just practice running, and the instructors are like constantly giving you feedback.
00:34:01.279 --> 00:34:14.719
Um and you learn about flying, you learn about the meteorological conditions you should be flying in with like your skill level, which is like very limited just to like nice, calm conditions.
00:34:14.880 --> 00:34:21.440
Um, and yeah, this is we kind of flew pretty early because the weather's bad tomorrow and Friday.
00:34:21.599 --> 00:34:26.559
Um, but this is the third day of the course, and this morning it was super calm.
00:34:26.800 --> 00:34:32.159
So we did a couple like practice runs on the ground, and our instructors were like, You're ready to jump.
00:34:32.480 --> 00:34:50.079
So we went up there and we ran off the cliff, and I like I was in the air for a lot longer than we expected because I caught like a thermal, which kind of pushes you up a little, and we didn't expect that, so it's a little scary, but super fun.
00:34:50.239 --> 00:34:56.800
And then they did take us on a tandem after we did our solo flight, we did a tandem flight because the conditions got kind of rough.
00:34:56.960 --> 00:35:02.159
Um, and like we weren't able to handle that condition, just not having flown before.
00:35:02.320 --> 00:35:11.199
Um, they took us on a tandem flight to show us what we shouldn't be flying in right now, and like I think they intentionally try to scare you so they would like go really close to the cliff.
00:35:11.360 --> 00:35:15.599
Um kind of tell you like what you should be doing as a beginner.
00:35:15.840 --> 00:35:19.199
So yeah, kind of just really practicing that groundwork.
00:35:19.360 --> 00:35:37.440
Um and then the next step is kind of just like fly a lot in safe conditions, do some flights like with the school, and then you can take like an intermediate course as well um to learn more about like what you should be flying in, how to use those thermals, how to control your glider in rougher conditions.
00:35:37.760 --> 00:35:40.320
But yeah, something I might do next year.
00:35:40.400 --> 00:35:42.079
I still don't have my own like gear.
00:35:42.239 --> 00:35:51.840
I'm just using the school's gear, so kind of the next step, and it's not as big in the US for sure, so definitely a little bit harder to learn over there.
00:35:51.920 --> 00:35:55.199
And they don't even I don't think we really have any races in the US.
00:35:55.280 --> 00:36:02.800
It's the huge thing in Europe to like fly like hike and fly races here, um, but not in the US.
00:36:02.960 --> 00:36:04.719
So it would be cool if they had those.
00:36:05.039 --> 00:36:05.760
That's interesting.
00:36:05.920 --> 00:36:07.360
I didn't know there was races for this.
00:36:07.679 --> 00:36:08.400
That's wild.
00:36:08.800 --> 00:36:11.119
Have you heard of um Red Bull X Alps?
00:36:12.719 --> 00:36:18.400
It's like it's traverse the whole Alps, um, it's hike and fly.
00:36:18.559 --> 00:36:34.159
So you traverse the whole Alps with your flying gear, you roughly follow the course, but you like choose which mountains you ascend, and then you try to fly as far as you can before you land, and then up, ascent, like so it's like a lot of strategy um and endurance.
00:36:34.400 --> 00:36:40.400
Um I say like my goal is to be the like Rachel Entrichin of Red Bull X Alps and like win it.
00:36:40.639 --> 00:36:54.480
I don't think a woman has ever won it, but I think that'd be super cool and something a woman could win because it's such a long endurance event and has a lot of like other things like strategy um and like skill with flying too.
00:36:54.559 --> 00:36:58.480
So I'm like maybe in 15 years focus on that and do that.
00:37:00.719 --> 00:37:02.320
Fuck yeah, that's amazing.
00:37:02.480 --> 00:37:04.480
Absolutely go for it, that would be sick.
00:37:04.800 --> 00:37:05.840
There are, yeah, yeah.
00:37:06.000 --> 00:37:09.519
Usually looking at the I can hike and fly stuff is super cool up here.
00:37:10.159 --> 00:37:10.559
Yeah.
00:37:10.800 --> 00:37:22.480
In c I'm I'm down in the springs in in Colorado, and like every now and then I do see like a paraglider, like someone jumping off like a something I would never jump off, but I'm like, holy shit, that's wild.
00:37:22.559 --> 00:37:24.400
Like, yeah, what is this guy doing?
00:37:24.639 --> 00:37:25.599
Yeah, it's kind of hard.
00:37:30.400 --> 00:37:33.119
I haven't even looked at them for back in the states.
00:37:33.199 --> 00:37:36.320
It's just a lot more chill in France or like whatever.
00:37:36.559 --> 00:37:39.920
Just have the third-party insurance for like roof.
00:37:41.760 --> 00:37:43.199
Yeah, it's actually funny you say that.
00:37:43.280 --> 00:37:45.119
I was just thinking about that on my run earlier today.
00:37:45.199 --> 00:37:48.239
Like, and it's not even just for paragliding, but like just running in general.
00:37:48.320 --> 00:37:53.440
Like, we're so goofy with uh like uh private property and stuff in the states.
00:37:53.599 --> 00:37:56.559
Like I feel like in Europe everything is like so much more laid back.
00:37:56.639 --> 00:38:01.039
Like you can most courses like kind of run through people's property and people are kind of chill with it.
00:38:01.199 --> 00:38:04.559
But here, dude, I'll get shot if I go on private property.
00:38:04.800 --> 00:38:05.119
Yeah.
00:38:07.360 --> 00:38:26.079
We're talking about how like in Europe you can kind of like take, at least in skyrunning, you can like kind of cut courses like a bit, like you can take the shortcuts, but in America, they're like, no, you have to stay on the trail even if it's a zigzag, and like a lot of Europe's the irises are just like do whatever, kind of follow the course.
00:38:26.159 --> 00:38:29.280
Like it's just interesting how right.
00:38:31.119 --> 00:38:31.920
Oh my god, yeah.
00:38:32.000 --> 00:38:36.400
And if you dude, if you cut a course in America, like you're gonna end up on Instagram and they're gonna they're gonna come for you.
00:38:36.719 --> 00:38:37.840
They're not fucking around.
00:38:38.000 --> 00:38:38.239
Yeah.
00:38:42.000 --> 00:38:43.280
Yeah, it's interesting.
00:38:43.519 --> 00:38:47.519
Um what's your take on Zagama this week?
00:38:47.599 --> 00:38:49.280
You excited you're gonna follow along or no?
00:38:49.440 --> 00:38:51.679
Do you do you like following sports super hardcore?
00:38:52.000 --> 00:38:53.199
I I kind of do.
00:38:53.360 --> 00:39:01.440
I was like, I kind of wanted to do Zagama if I was gonna do Olden Trail series this year, but um I was like, that's a lot of racing.
00:39:01.599 --> 00:39:05.360
Um but yeah, it doesn't it seems like a really cool race.
00:39:05.519 --> 00:39:10.079
Um, I think it'll be really cool to see how um Tobey does in the women's race.
00:39:10.320 --> 00:39:15.039
Because I know there are people who were like, is Tobey gonna break four hours at Zagama?
00:39:15.440 --> 00:39:17.360
Um that would be really cool.
00:39:17.519 --> 00:39:19.039
She's an athlete.
00:39:19.280 --> 00:39:21.920
Um her performances are insane.
00:39:22.079 --> 00:39:24.079
So definitely excited to follow that race.
00:39:24.239 --> 00:39:27.199
I don't follow the men's side as much, so I don't know much about that.
00:39:27.360 --> 00:39:31.440
Um, but yeah, I am super stoked to see how the women's race plays out there.
00:39:31.599 --> 00:39:35.599
And like Sarah Alan, so I know that's like a super important race for her.
00:39:35.760 --> 00:39:37.039
So yeah.
00:39:38.239 --> 00:39:38.800
Totally.
00:39:39.039 --> 00:39:40.000
Yeah, I couldn't agree more.
00:39:40.079 --> 00:39:44.880
I that's what I was gonna say was like the women, I think the women's race actually is gonna be more interesting, in my opinion.
00:39:45.280 --> 00:39:49.199
I think it's uh with Tovey, Sarah, um, Mainland.
00:39:49.440 --> 00:39:54.079
There's just it's the the women's uh field is just super deep this year.
00:39:54.159 --> 00:39:56.320
Um it's gonna be interesting.
00:39:56.400 --> 00:39:58.480
And yeah, will it be Tove or will it be Sarah?
00:39:58.559 --> 00:39:58.880
I don't know.
00:39:59.039 --> 00:40:00.960
Especially because Sarah's a Sarah's a champion.
00:40:01.119 --> 00:40:02.159
You know, she's done before.
00:40:02.320 --> 00:40:03.360
So I don't know.
00:40:04.000 --> 00:40:06.719
Yeah, totally.
00:40:06.880 --> 00:40:07.280
Yeah.
00:40:07.599 --> 00:40:08.480
Super interesting.
00:40:08.960 --> 00:40:10.639
All right, well, we're at about 40 minutes.
00:40:10.800 --> 00:40:12.480
I uh I think we covered everything.
00:40:12.639 --> 00:40:14.800
Let's uh let's let's we'll link back up.
00:40:14.880 --> 00:40:16.239
If you do Whiteface, let me know.
00:40:16.400 --> 00:40:17.360
I know you're signed up for it.
00:40:17.440 --> 00:40:22.000
Yeah, um, I'll be out there uh doing both uh racing and commentating.
00:40:22.239 --> 00:40:23.920
So I'll cover it after the racing.
00:40:24.079 --> 00:40:26.960
Uh so looking forward to seeing you out there.
00:40:27.199 --> 00:40:29.199
And uh yeah, we'll definitely be in touch.
00:40:29.280 --> 00:40:30.000
I appreciate it.
00:40:30.239 --> 00:40:30.639
Awesome.
00:40:30.800 --> 00:40:31.679
Sounds good.
