00:00:00.501 --> 00:00:06.711
Well, we're still vibing here at VIVE 2024 BP2 Health Reverse Mullet Healthcare Podcast.
00:00:06.852 --> 00:00:08.321
On the road, episode On the road.
00:00:08.403 --> 00:00:09.106
I'm Dave Pavlik.
00:00:09.179 --> 00:00:12.391
And I'm Ellen Brown, and we're here with Brett McDonald.
00:00:12.391 --> 00:00:16.109
And so, brett, tell us why you're here, tell us about yourself.
00:00:16.861 --> 00:00:18.146
Thank you, thanks for letting me join you today.
00:00:18.146 --> 00:00:21.750
Yeah, so I work for Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
00:00:21.750 --> 00:00:27.410
I'm Senior Vice President in Population Health, and we're here talking about value-based care and some new initiatives.
00:00:27.871 --> 00:00:32.149
Which is our favorite, so I'm super excited that you're here as we, as our.
00:00:32.149 --> 00:00:35.841
We had an episode recently where we said why is it taking so long?
00:00:36.264 --> 00:00:37.088
Value-based care.
00:00:37.088 --> 00:00:38.313
Why is it taking so long?
00:00:38.313 --> 00:00:39.780
10 years ago, we thought it was around the corner.
00:00:39.780 --> 00:00:44.027
Well, I think that's when we met was 10 years ago working on value-based care.
00:00:44.027 --> 00:00:47.734
So yeah, so tell us what you're doing at Vi first.
00:00:47.893 --> 00:00:48.494
Yeah, sure.
00:00:48.494 --> 00:00:58.871
So there was a press release this morning about a new partnership, or collaboration, I should say, between the network we built in Tennessee and Quantum Health, which is super exciting.
00:00:58.871 --> 00:01:01.378
It is exciting and it's the first of its kind in the nation.
00:01:01.378 --> 00:01:12.665
We're really looking at how their navigation services can align with our clinically integrated network to improve how we deliver care to the communities we serve and we're really excited about that.
00:01:13.007 --> 00:01:15.808
Cool Any technology that's being leveraged there.
00:01:16.203 --> 00:01:23.313
Well, they have their own platforms and we, of course, have all of our capabilities to support the populations we take risk for.
00:01:23.313 --> 00:01:27.290
So what we're doing right now is figuring out how those two capabilities best align.
00:01:27.290 --> 00:01:30.246
Okay, but early indications are they align quite well?
00:01:30.246 --> 00:01:34.810
Okay, all right, perfect, I forgot to ask you if you wanted to wear the mullet, the reverse mullet.
00:01:34.939 --> 00:01:37.308
I think he's going to turn us down on the props no, that's fine.
00:01:37.308 --> 00:01:42.906
Those of you that are not able to see this on film although I'm excited because we're going to get this on film is I have a.
00:01:42.906 --> 00:01:51.486
I have the infamous health the, the sponsor of this entire event the infamous sequined jacket that has health emblazoned on the back.
00:01:51.486 --> 00:01:55.421
It's like the most outstanding sequin cover jacket I'm sporting the vive t-shirt.
00:01:55.441 --> 00:01:56.063
Yes, you are.
00:01:56.063 --> 00:01:59.941
You are so swag I guess I'm anchoring down with a little more conservative.
00:01:59.960 --> 00:02:04.049
Yes, you look appropriate and you have your, we all have our, our name tags.
00:02:04.049 --> 00:02:09.127
I feel I feel sort of like when we were at JP Morgan, a little, where it's like the everyone's walking around the city with their name tags on.
00:02:09.719 --> 00:02:19.233
So the question we're asking everybody is what are you passionate about that you think can affect real, all caps, real change in healthcare?
00:02:19.780 --> 00:02:24.352
Yeah Well, so we're 12 years into a journey of trying to do that.
00:02:24.352 --> 00:02:31.241
The reason I'm sticking it out in this is I really believe that the providers of healthcare are the ones that can make the most difference.
00:02:31.241 --> 00:02:49.427
We're the ones who are actually sitting in the room with the patients, absolutely, and so all the work that we've been doing over the years to try to better align the providers of care, to get them more information, to get them what they need, to do the very best job they can, we're really starting to see that work Really.
00:02:49.427 --> 00:03:02.510
We are, and that's exciting for me because, in the end of the day, the patient gets a better outcome, and that's what we're here for, right, and so we serve a population in Tennessee.
00:03:02.510 --> 00:03:18.782
We are committed to improving the care and the quality and the outcomes for that population, and the technology and the information and the incentives and everything are finally starting to turn to make that possible and, or, I should say, enhance our ability to do that.
00:03:18.823 --> 00:03:21.086
Do you think that anything has happened?
00:03:21.086 --> 00:03:24.052
Is it truly incremental?
00:03:24.052 --> 00:03:36.725
Because I always say to people we created the podcast because I feel as an industry we have very few platforms where we just have conversations about how we could really push the envelope on change.
00:03:36.725 --> 00:03:44.120
Right, but I always say I don't want to throw incremental change out with the bathwater because that's the reality of the hard yards that we have to put in.
00:03:44.199 --> 00:03:47.502
But do you think that it's just been that it's?
00:03:47.502 --> 00:03:54.222
It's kind of that tipping point where you've just you know, it's sort of like what is it the 10,000 hour rule or whatever where we're doing?
00:03:54.323 --> 00:03:55.068
long enough, and now?
00:03:55.149 --> 00:04:05.676
it's starting to, it is starting to go well, or do you think that there's just been a shift, any particular pivot that that you think is making it feel a little bit more like it's happening?
00:04:05.676 --> 00:04:06.903
Yeah, yeah.
00:04:07.085 --> 00:04:23.853
So I think COVID impacted everybody, and what we see is the cost to deliver health care has gone up at such a fast rate that it's really going, in ways, passed through to the employer community, and that's not the right thing.
00:04:23.853 --> 00:04:44.232
The employers can't shoulder all that burden, so it's starting to force a conversation more from the employer side than it had been in the past, asking for help, and so what you're starting to see is organizations like ours across the country that are really trying to work directly with employers to figure out what can we do to make a difference for you.
00:04:44.232 --> 00:04:46.658
That can be primary care strategies.
00:04:46.658 --> 00:04:47.708
It can be a lot of different things.
00:04:47.728 --> 00:04:55.999
Interesting, but the real key is how can we bring solutions to you as an employer that are specific to your employee?
00:04:56.019 --> 00:05:00.295
population, your population Right, not just the population Right at large, exactly.
00:05:00.365 --> 00:05:01.992
And that's where you start to see some real change.
00:05:02.204 --> 00:05:03.391
And are you able to work?
00:05:03.391 --> 00:05:05.994
And see, I'm going to have to stop because we only have 10 minutes.
00:05:05.994 --> 00:05:11.913
And this is clearly an episode that I want to have, and we'll even come to Nashville for that one.
00:05:11.934 --> 00:05:14.930
We'll welcome you, yes.
00:05:14.951 --> 00:05:18.687
But so my last question is when we talk about employers, we always talk about benefits.
00:05:18.687 --> 00:05:29.326
So I should say health plans and then employers selecting benefits, and that's always been a big barrier for value-based care and for provider engagement and for taking risks.
00:05:29.326 --> 00:05:33.315
So do you think that that is starting to shift?
00:05:33.315 --> 00:05:33.495
Like?
00:05:33.495 --> 00:05:39.827
Are you all able to engage in that conversation around benefit design so that it really does support population health?
00:05:40.411 --> 00:05:43.071
Yes, so there are a couple parts to that answer.
00:05:43.071 --> 00:05:58.187
Yes, there are First is, we'll work with anybody who wants to improve the care and the quality that is given to the populations we serve, and so any payer, any third party administrator, any collaborator that can help us on that mission.
00:05:58.187 --> 00:06:00.490
We're there, we'll talk to them.
00:06:00.490 --> 00:06:09.745
The reason I'm here today actually is to talk about a new collaboration with navigation capabilities, with Quantum Health and Quantum.
00:06:09.824 --> 00:06:11.807
Health, being one of the nation's leaders in navigation.
00:06:12.608 --> 00:06:14.531
We are a proven high value network.
00:06:14.531 --> 00:06:20.341
Yes, they are a proven capable resource for navigating to care providers.
00:06:20.341 --> 00:06:24.896
What we've realized is the additive capability of what each of us brings to the table.
00:06:24.896 --> 00:06:31.935
So we think the next step in that evolution is how do we work with the employers to incentivize their benefit plan?
00:06:32.557 --> 00:06:33.918
Exactly To do that very thing.
00:06:34.038 --> 00:06:41.495
Yeah, right, and so that's where the providers of care can get closer to, I think, solving the challenge that's fantastic well, outstanding.
00:06:41.495 --> 00:06:43.507
So yay, thank you.
00:06:43.526 --> 00:06:46.915
Thank you so much for stopping by yeah, and now you have to go speak, so absolutely well.
00:06:46.935 --> 00:06:48.309
Thanks for your time, appreciate it.
00:06:48.309 --> 00:06:48.850
Thanks for being here.
00:06:48.850 --> 00:06:49.632
We'll see you in nashville.
00:06:49.632 --> 00:06:50.235
Yes, sir.
