INFORMAZIONI SU QUESTO EPISODIO
Do you ever feel like a completely different person depending on the room you’re in? At work, you’re polished and professional. With your friends, you’re loud, you’re laughing, and you’re saying exactly what’s on your mind. And with your family, you’re switching languages, being respectful, and maybe still being the one with all the answers. That’s code-switching, and for a lot of us first-gen women and women of color, it’s something we’ve been doing for as long as we can remember.
Usually we talk about code-switching as something we have to do to survive. And honestly, sometimes it is. But in this week’s episode, I’m asking a different question: what if code-switching is actually a milestone? What if it’s a skill we can use to take the confidence we already have in one part of our life and bring it into another?
We’re getting into why code-switching runs so deep for so many of us. From translating health insurance letters for our parents as kids, to being taught respeto at home and “speak up” at school, to being the first in our families to walk into a college classroom or an office. I’m talking about that ni de aquí, ni de allá feeling of never fully belonging anywhere, how even my name and my voice change depending on who I’m talking to, and what happened when I finally started bringing my culture into work.
Tune in to learn how to tell when code-switching is helping you and when it’s quietly shrinking you, plus one simple practice you can start using to bring your most confident self into the rooms where you usually go quiet.
