Doing School Differently: Personalized Learning, Student Confidence, and AI with Dr. Richard Savage

In this episode of The Education Equation, host Dan Cox welcomes Dr. Richard Savage, Superintendent of California Online Public Schools, for a conversation that challenges many of the assumptions surrounding online education. Drawing from leadership experience in both traditional brick-and-mortar schools and online public schools, Dr. Savage explains how flexible learning environments can better serve students with diverse academic, personal, and family needs while maintaining high expectations and meaningful learning.

Dr. Savage shares why personalized pacing, stronger parent engagement, and student ownership can transform learning when paired with the right support systems. He discusses helping students recover lost credits without sacrificing rigor, developing independent learners who are prepared for college and careers, and why building confidence in mathematics depends on reteaching foundational concepts instead of simply moving students through the curriculum. Throughout the conversation, he reminds listeners that meaningful education always begins with strong relationships between teachers and students.

The discussion also explores the future of artificial intelligence in education. Rather than viewing AI as a shortcut to answers, Dr. Savage explains how it can provide immediate feedback, guide students through mathematical thinking, and create more opportunities for personalized learning. He emphasizes that teachers remain the most important part of the learning process and that AI should strengthen--not replace--the human relationships that help students grow.
