00:00:15.507Welcome to The Deacon's Table, a podcast of The Deacon's Fellowship.
00:00:15.507 -->
00:00:19.337I'm your host, Benjamin Schultz, the Administrative Deacon of the Presbytery
00:00:19.337 -->
00:00:22.847of Central Florida. Here at The Deacon's Table, our goal is to equip,
00:00:22.847 -->
00:00:26.900support, and connect deacons for faithful, wise, and compassionate ministry.
00:00:27.376 -->
00:00:31.547These episodes are intended to be brief, practical, and insightful to maximize
00:00:31.547 -->
00:00:33.710your ability to serve with clarity and care.
00:00:34.035 -->
00:00:36.937So pull up a chair and join me at The Deacon's Table.
00:00:37.753 -->
00:00:41.096In this season, we're going through the Deacon Reference Book to build a shared
00:00:41.096 -->
00:00:45.426understanding of what faithful diaconal ministry looks like in the life of the church.
00:00:45.426 -->
00:00:49.336In each episode, we take one topic at a time so we can stay clear,
00:00:49.336 -->
00:00:51.856practical, and unified in how we serve.
00:00:51.856 -->
00:00:55.266Today, we're going to look at something fundamental to the office of deacon,
00:00:55.266 -->
00:00:58.256the kind of man this work requires, because before competency,
00:00:58.256 -->
00:01:02.581before structure, before strategy, Scripture emphasizes character.
00:01:03.034 -->
00:01:06.266Let's start with something that is easy to miss. When the Bible describes the
00:01:06.266 -->
00:01:09.336qualifications for deacons, it doesn't begin with skill sets.
00:01:09.336 -->
00:01:13.126It begins with character. The qualifications from scripture are dignified,
00:01:13.126 -->
00:01:18.026not double-tongued, not greedy, holding to the mysteries of the faith with a clear conscience.
00:01:18.026 -->
00:01:20.956Those are not technical requirements, they are spiritual ones.
00:01:20.956 -->
00:01:24.746And that tells us something important. The effectiveness of diaconal ministry
00:01:24.746 -->
00:01:29.447is not built first on what a man can do. It is built on who he is.
00:01:29.592 -->
00:01:34.006Now that cuts against how we naturally think. We tend to look for capable people,
00:01:34.006 -->
00:01:36.336organized people, people who can get things done.
00:01:36.336 -->
00:01:39.816And those things matter. They are important. But the primary qualifications
00:01:39.816 -->
00:01:43.106in scripture are something else. That is because you can train someone in skills
00:01:43.106 -->
00:01:46.930and abilities, but you cannot quickly or easily form someone's character.
00:01:47.272 -->
00:01:51.006A friend of mine was training to be a deacon, and he doubted himself because
00:01:51.006 -->
00:01:53.876he could not change the brakes or the oil on a car.
00:01:53.876 -->
00:01:57.656He could not build a shed. He could not carry multiple sandbags.
00:01:57.656 -->
00:02:01.166I tried to encourage him by walking through the qualifications for this office.
00:02:01.166 -->
00:02:04.966None of those things that he could not do were listed. I wish I could tell you
00:02:04.966 -->
00:02:09.016he became a deacon, but he did not. He was so focused on what he could not do
00:02:09.016 -->
00:02:11.984rather than seeing the servant's heart that the Lord had placed in him.
00:02:12.524 -->
00:02:15.902Imagine two deacon candidates. One is highly organized, efficient,
00:02:15.902 -->
00:02:17.062and physically capable.
00:02:17.062 -->
00:02:20.282But he struggles with patience, is not honest in small things,
00:02:20.282 -->
00:02:22.542and is inconsistent in his walk with the Lord.
00:02:22.542 -->
00:02:25.962The other is less polished, less efficient, but he has a servant's heart.
00:02:25.962 -->
00:02:30.572He is prayerful, honest, and dependable. Over time, which one builds trust?
00:02:30.572 -->
00:02:34.462Which one reflects Christ? That's the point. Diaconal ministry runs on trust.
00:02:34.462 -->
00:02:37.362People are inviting you into vulnerable parts of their lives,
00:02:37.362 -->
00:02:40.492into their financial stress, family tension, and personal struggles.
00:02:40.492 -->
00:02:44.050In those moments, They don't just need competence. They need character.
00:02:44.288 -->
00:02:48.742This is why Act 6 matters so much. When the church identifies men to lead in
00:02:48.742 -->
00:02:51.922this work, the first thing they look for is not ability.
00:02:51.922 -->
00:02:55.632It is spiritual maturity. They selected men of good reputation,
00:02:56.012 -->
00:02:57.572full of the spirit and of wisdom.
00:02:57.572 -->
00:03:01.502They did that because first and foremost, diaconal work is spiritual work.
00:03:01.502 -->
00:03:06.012It requires discernment. It requires humility. It requires a man who is being
00:03:06.012 -->
00:03:09.812shaped by the gospel. And here's where this gets personal. You cannot lead people
00:03:09.812 -->
00:03:13.192into mercy if you are not regularly experiencing God's mercy.
00:03:13.552 -->
00:03:17.092You cannot extend grace if you are not living in it. You cannot walk patiently
00:03:17.092 -->
00:03:21.022with others if you are not being formed by the patience of God toward you.
00:03:21.022 -->
00:03:23.367I'll say that again because it needs to be emphasized.
00:03:23.535 -->
00:03:28.082You cannot lead people into mercy if you are not regularly experiencing God's mercy.
00:03:28.082 -->
00:03:32.012You cannot extend grace if you are not living in it. You cannot walk patiently
00:03:32.012 -->
00:03:35.682with others if you are not being formed by the patience of God toward you.
00:03:35.682 -->
00:03:38.982So character is not just about behavior. It's about formation.
00:03:38.982 -->
00:03:44.072It's about how you are becoming like Christ. And the Spirit does that formation in ordinary ways.
00:03:44.072 -->
00:03:47.872In reading scripture, in prayer, in worship, in fellowship, but also in how
00:03:47.872 -->
00:03:49.032you handle frustration.
00:03:49.032 -->
00:03:52.652In how you respond when things don't go your way. It shows up in your home,
00:03:52.652 -->
00:03:56.272in your work, in your relationships. That's why the qualifications include things
00:03:56.272 -->
00:04:00.262like managing your household well. Because character is not compartmentalized.
00:04:00.262 -->
00:04:01.997It carries across every part of life.
00:04:02.276 -->
00:04:07.069Now, let's bring this into the work of a deacon. Character shows up in how you listen and care.
00:04:07.069 -->
00:04:10.279It shows up in whether people feel safe to be honest with you.
00:04:10.279 -->
00:04:13.229It shows up in whether you follow through on what you say.
00:04:13.229 -->
00:04:18.009It shows up in how you handle confidential situations. And over time, that builds something.
00:04:18.009 -->
00:04:21.829It builds credibility. Not the kind that comes from title or position,
00:04:21.829 -->
00:04:25.879but the kind that comes from consistent, faithful presence. So here's the takeaway.
00:04:25.879 -->
00:04:28.787Competency matters, but character carries the weight.
00:04:29.012 -->
00:04:32.649Before we close, here are a few questions to consider. Where is God shaping
00:04:32.649 -->
00:04:33.760your character right now?
00:04:33.999 -->
00:04:37.900Where are you tempted to rely on skill instead of spiritual maturity?
00:04:38.068 -->
00:04:41.519And how is your life aligning with the calling that you have been given?
00:04:41.519 -->
00:04:46.015Because we as deacons lead in mercy ministry, we must be shaped by the mercy of God.
00:04:50.131 -->
00:04:53.299Thanks for joining me at the Deacons Table, where our aim is to equip,
