The Right’s Sewer Has a Guest List
A Former Border Chief in a Neo-Fascist Room
Charles Davis reports that Gregory Bovino, once the face of Trump’s mass deportation machine and later ousted from Border Patrol, posted what looked like a Nazi salute photo and then turned up at a “neo-fascist summit” in Portugal. That is the factual core. Everything else is the familiar haze of institutional delay, selective attention, and media reluctance to call right-wing extremism by its name when it wears a suit and once held federal power.
Power Knows Exactly What It Is Doing
Bovino was not some anonymous fringe hanger-on. He was a commander inside the U.S. enforcement state, tied to Trump’s deportation agenda, and then he chose to advertise himself at a conference organized around “remigration,” the euphemism du jour for ethnic expulsion. That is not confusion. It is political signaling from a man who understands the audience and the message. The relevant power here is not street-level extremism; it is the state-adjacent prestige that gives extremist networks credibility when former officials cross over into them.
The Euphemism Is the Point
“Remigration” is the kind of antiseptic word that exists to launder ugly intent. Davis describes it as a far-right fringe idea promoting the mass expulsion of ethnic minorities, which is the actual policy content hiding behind the branding. Afonso Gonçalves and his group Reconquista are not trading in vague dissent; the organization’s name itself points to historical ethnic cleansing, and Gonçalves’ line about “Weimar solutions” leaves little room for innocent interpretation. The event was built to flatter people who want the old language of purity without admitting they mean purity.
Media Tends to Miss the Crime When It Comes Wrapped in Respectability
Davis’s larger complaint is not merely that this event happened. It is that coverage remains weak, especially when the actors are Republican operatives or retired Trump officials rather than figures already marked as beyond the pale. That is the misdirection at work: extremism is treated as a subcultural curiosity until it becomes visibly violent, while the people cultivating it are treated as merely embarrassing, awkward, or adjacent. The result is a familiar institutional cowardice, where the press can identify antisemitism in the abstract but still hesitate when it emerges from the right’s own personnel pipeline.
The New Normal Is Old Authoritarian Language in Cleaner Clothing
The attendee list matters because it shows the network, not just the individual. Davis names Martin Sellner, associated with the “great replacement” conspiracy, and Lena Kotré, linked to a Swiss neo-Nazi group. This is not a random assortment of provocateurs. It is a transnational project that blends ethnic nationalism, conspiracy theory, and state ambition into a portable ideology. Bovino’s appearance signals that the boundary between formal enforcement power and open racial politics is thinner than respectable coverage likes to admit.
The Pattern Is the Story
The larger political pattern is simple: hard-right institutions and their former officials move outward toward explicit ethno-nationalism, while media institutions treat the drift as a side issue unless it is already impossible to ignore. That is how authoritarian politics advances in democracies that still want to believe the danger is always elsewhere. The danger is not that the right has hidden its ideology too well. The danger is that too many institutions have learned to describe it as a lapse in decorum instead of what it is: organized, racialized power reaching for normalcy.
