WEBVTT
00:00:03.279 --> 00:00:12.720
Well, today we are in week six of our Exodus Part 2 series where we've been uh walking through chapter by chapter, verse by verse, through the second book of the Bible.
00:00:12.960 --> 00:00:19.440
If you're new here, what we would encourage you to do is not only stop by the Welcome Center after the service, uh, we do have refreshments.
00:00:19.600 --> 00:00:22.079
Some of us on staff are gonna be out in the West lobby.
00:00:22.160 --> 00:00:23.519
We'd love to connect with you.
00:00:23.600 --> 00:00:26.480
Uh, but we always challenge people to give Shepherd's Gate three weeks.
00:00:26.559 --> 00:00:33.039
Just come for three weeks in a row and see if God would maybe be leading you to call Shepherd's Gate your home church.
00:00:33.200 --> 00:00:36.079
Uh, you can see here's the rest of the schedule for October.
00:00:36.159 --> 00:00:42.560
So we're gonna be uh doing all of Exodus 16 today, and then we'll be breaking up Exodus 17 into two parts.
00:00:42.640 --> 00:00:45.920
Uh, because we just believe that people should be in church every single Sunday.
00:00:46.079 --> 00:00:46.719
Amen?
00:00:47.359 --> 00:00:50.079
And some of you might be wondering, why do you say that every single week?
00:00:50.240 --> 00:00:56.240
Because the national average, no matter what generation you're from, is two times a month, which is what?
00:00:57.119 --> 00:00:57.679
15%.
00:00:58.320 --> 00:00:58.880
Bad.
00:00:59.439 --> 00:01:00.079
Bad.
00:01:00.320 --> 00:01:03.119
So we want to live differently here at Shepherd's Gate.
00:01:03.200 --> 00:01:07.680
We want to live unconventionally, and we just think God has something for you each and every week.
00:01:07.760 --> 00:01:13.040
If you can't be here, obviously uh we would love to have you join us online or watch later on demand.
00:01:13.120 --> 00:01:15.120
Uh, there's some other ideas there as well.
00:01:15.200 --> 00:01:19.040
And the easiest way to stay uh up on everything at Shepherd's Gate is to download our app.
00:01:19.120 --> 00:01:21.519
And if you're new, there's a tap tag in front of you.
00:01:21.599 --> 00:01:29.840
Uh you can do that and you can see what we've preached in the past, but you can also uh watch and track what we're going to be doing in the future as well.
00:01:30.079 --> 00:01:33.599
And so if you weren't here last week, we ended with chapter 15.
00:01:33.760 --> 00:01:36.879
Uh, kind of the theme of last week was the children of Israel.
00:01:37.040 --> 00:01:39.439
Basically, what happened was they left the Red Sea.
00:01:39.519 --> 00:01:41.200
Moses kind of had to move them along.
00:01:41.359 --> 00:01:47.519
They got out into the desert and they didn't have water for three days, which is kind of a tough situation to be in.
00:01:47.599 --> 00:01:49.040
They grumbled, they complained.
00:01:49.200 --> 00:01:51.439
God miraculously provided water.
00:01:51.519 --> 00:01:53.439
Uh, so he told Moses what to do.
00:01:53.599 --> 00:01:56.400
Moses followed those instructions, and so they had water.
00:01:56.560 --> 00:02:02.879
And then the second half of Matthew 15, God actually led them from that place to a different place called Elam.
00:02:02.959 --> 00:02:03.599
You guys remember this?
00:02:03.680 --> 00:02:06.799
Where there was 12 springs and 70 palm trees.
00:02:07.040 --> 00:02:10.400
Basically Aruba in Egypt, okay?
00:02:10.639 --> 00:02:13.919
I mean, where do you find something like this in the middle of the desert?
00:02:14.000 --> 00:02:16.400
But because he's God, he knows where everything's at.
00:02:16.560 --> 00:02:26.400
And so he brings them there to a place of rest and to a place of abundance, because they obviously had so much water to drink from that they were all full.
00:02:26.560 --> 00:02:33.919
Now, chapter 16, if you have your Bible, if you brought your Bible, if you want to churn there, I'm gonna be going through different parts of it because you heard it read.
00:02:34.000 --> 00:02:35.360
So this is where it starts.
00:02:35.439 --> 00:02:48.719
It tells us in the beginning of chapter 16 that they're gonna move on from this really nice place and they're gonna be heading further into the desert because their final destination is not Elam, it's the promised land.
00:02:49.199 --> 00:02:55.439
And so he's got to gather all these people, all their possessions, all their animals, and get them moving once again.
00:02:55.599 --> 00:03:00.240
And wouldn't you know they get out into the desert, and what was the theme that you heard over and over again in the video?
00:03:00.400 --> 00:03:01.120
What did they do?
00:03:02.000 --> 00:03:03.360
Oh, you heard it too.
00:03:03.919 --> 00:03:09.919
Isn't it funny how many times the word grumbling or grumbled is in just one chapter of the Bible?
00:03:10.080 --> 00:03:14.479
And they're grumbling not just to Moses, but to Moses' brother Aaron.
00:03:14.800 --> 00:03:19.439
Now, last week I asked you, how long can a person survive without water?
00:03:19.840 --> 00:03:25.039
And we had some, you know, nurses in here, and I think I think we ended up at seven was the number.
00:03:25.199 --> 00:03:28.159
Someone saw somebody live seven days without water.
00:03:28.319 --> 00:03:33.759
The question today for this text is well, how long can a person survive without food?
00:03:35.280 --> 00:03:35.840
40 days.
00:03:36.400 --> 00:03:36.879
Is that it?
00:03:36.960 --> 00:03:38.560
At day 41 you die?
00:03:39.120 --> 00:03:40.319
Has anyone beaten that?
00:03:40.400 --> 00:03:40.960
I mean, I don't know.
00:03:41.039 --> 00:03:41.599
I'm asking you.
00:03:41.759 --> 00:03:42.639
I didn't look it up.
00:03:42.800 --> 00:03:51.680
I'm curious, because these human bodies that God has created and given us, it's amazing how long we can live without food.
00:03:52.400 --> 00:03:58.479
Now, the emotional side of us will tell you that we can't live a couple hours without food.
00:03:59.199 --> 00:04:02.960
It's amazing how grouch we get if we're not fed.
00:04:03.039 --> 00:04:05.280
Some of you, you get really grouchy.
00:04:05.439 --> 00:04:07.360
Uh, but that's another sermon.
00:04:07.520 --> 00:04:09.120
Anyways, verse 3.
00:04:09.919 --> 00:04:14.719
So the Israelites say to them, this is this is pattern, this is the pattern that we've seen this as well.
00:04:14.879 --> 00:04:17.680
They get so dramatic when they don't have food or water.
00:04:17.920 --> 00:04:21.680
If only we had died by the Lord's hand in Egypt.
00:04:21.920 --> 00:04:23.680
I mean, how pathetic is that?
00:04:24.000 --> 00:04:27.600
You wish that God would have killed you while you were a slave in Egypt?
00:04:28.240 --> 00:04:35.360
Or they say this, there we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted.
00:04:35.680 --> 00:04:44.000
Forget about the fact that we were slaves, we owned nothing, we were beaten, and we were building buildings for the Egyptians.
00:04:44.160 --> 00:04:48.560
But at least at the end of the night we got to sit around and have a nice pot of stew.
00:04:48.800 --> 00:04:50.959
I mean, how ridiculous the complaining is.
00:04:51.199 --> 00:04:52.160
What did you do, Moses?
00:04:52.480 --> 00:04:56.959
You brought us into the desert to starve this entire assembly and to watch us die?
00:04:57.839 --> 00:05:05.759
Now, if I was Moses, and because I'm sarcastic, I would have turned to the people of Israel and said, that's exactly what I destined to do.
00:05:06.000 --> 00:05:08.319
In fact, you may have forgotten, I was fine.
00:05:08.399 --> 00:05:18.800
I was married, I had kids, I had a whole life outside of Egypt, and some person named God showed up at a burning bush and told me I had to come back and rescue you guys.
00:05:19.040 --> 00:05:27.839
And since I did what God told me to do and I rescued you out of Egypt and led you through the Red Sea, it was also that you could die right now in this moment in the desert with no witnesses.
00:05:28.480 --> 00:05:31.920
Like, come on! What is going on with you people?
00:05:32.079 --> 00:05:39.519
How do you go from seeing miracle after miracle after miracle after miracle, and yet you still doubt?
00:05:40.240 --> 00:05:43.759
You still don't know if God is gonna come through for you.
00:05:44.480 --> 00:05:52.319
God hears all this complaining and he says to Moses, just so you know, I know what's going on, and I'm gonna provide once again.
00:05:52.399 --> 00:05:54.800
I'm gonna rain down bread from heaven for you.
00:05:55.040 --> 00:05:57.040
And the people are to go out each day.
00:05:57.199 --> 00:06:03.920
Now, this is important, these are the instructions, and gather enough for that specific day.
00:06:04.240 --> 00:06:06.240
In this way, I'm going to test them.
00:06:06.399 --> 00:06:07.759
This is what God does.
00:06:08.000 --> 00:06:12.399
He tested them last week with the water, he's testing them this week with the food.
00:06:12.639 --> 00:06:18.160
Remember, God got them out of Egypt, but God still has to get Egypt out of their heart.
00:06:18.319 --> 00:06:26.639
Just like God has delivered us through his Son Jesus Christ, but God still every single day is working on getting the world out of our hearts.
00:06:26.800 --> 00:06:27.759
Did you know that?
00:06:28.000 --> 00:06:37.920
That God still has to get all of the corruption of this world out of our hearts, which was why we're still here, which is why we're still breathing, which is why he hasn't taken us home.
00:06:38.079 --> 00:06:45.759
He still has more people to save on this planet, and he still has more people to turn into the image of his son each and every day.
00:06:46.000 --> 00:06:50.319
So he's saying, I'm going to test them and I'm going to see if they're going to follow my instructions.
00:06:50.560 --> 00:06:55.120
And he specifically says that on the sixth day, they're to prepare what they bring in.
00:06:55.279 --> 00:07:01.439
And by the way, on the sixth day when they're out gathering the food, they're going to bring in twice as much.
00:07:02.000 --> 00:07:04.879
Here's an important thing you need to know about this passage.
00:07:05.120 --> 00:07:07.759
This doesn't mean that they're doing twice the work.
00:07:08.079 --> 00:07:12.959
It doesn't mean that they had to get up earlier or stay out twice as long.
00:07:13.199 --> 00:07:16.399
It's that God performs miracles within miracles.
00:07:16.560 --> 00:07:34.079
So he performs the miracle of providing the bread, but he also is performing the miracle as they're gathering the bread, as they're gathering it, wouldn't you know that it would magically and spiritually become double what it was any other day that they had gathered it?
00:07:34.480 --> 00:07:39.600
Does this remind you of any testimony or story in the New Testament?
00:07:42.399 --> 00:07:43.279
Exactly.
00:07:43.600 --> 00:07:52.240
When Jesus was out in the wilderness with thousands of people, and the people are hungry, and they're getting a little ornery.
00:07:52.399 --> 00:07:56.160
And then the disciples go to Jesus and say, Jesus, I don't know if you can hear.
00:07:56.240 --> 00:07:58.399
They're getting ornery and they're hungry.
00:07:58.560 --> 00:08:00.000
We should just let them go.
00:08:00.240 --> 00:08:08.079
And Jesus, not being done with teaching and not being done laying his hands on them and healing them, decides that the disciples should figure out a plan.
00:08:08.160 --> 00:08:23.199
And eventually it leads to a little boy with five loaves and two fishes, Jesus blessing, breaking that meal, and then magically, boom, all of a sudden, God multiplies it because God has the ability to do that.
00:08:23.439 --> 00:08:25.519
And so that's what you're seeing here as well.
00:08:25.680 --> 00:08:28.480
He's multiplying it even in their midst.
00:08:28.720 --> 00:08:40.080
And so Moses and Aaron, this is so fascinating to me, they say to the Israelites after they get all the information from God, in the evening, you will know that it was the Lord who brought you out of Egypt.
00:08:40.320 --> 00:08:42.000
Like it's going to sink into your brain.
00:08:42.080 --> 00:08:45.759
And oh, by the way, in the morning, you're going to see it with your eyes.
00:08:45.840 --> 00:08:51.759
You're going to see the glory of the Lord because you're going to see all of this bread that he has provided.
00:08:52.159 --> 00:09:00.799
Now, what I like about this verse is that he knows they're complaining, he knows they're hungry, but he doesn't give them the answer immediately.
00:09:01.120 --> 00:09:11.039
He gives them the answer and the fact that he's working through Moses and Aaron to tell them that he's going to provide, but he's going to make them wait just a little bit longer.
00:09:11.519 --> 00:09:13.600
Don't you find that fascinating?
00:09:13.919 --> 00:09:16.879
That it's not an immediate answer to their prayer.
00:09:17.440 --> 00:09:24.320
He's promising that he's going to provide for them, but he's going to do it in his time and in his way, just as he does with us.
00:09:24.399 --> 00:09:37.600
And sometimes we plead with God or we pray to God or we want God to answer the difficulty that we're going through, and God gives us confirmation, but he might not fulfill that promise that day.
00:09:37.759 --> 00:09:38.720
It may come later.
00:09:38.879 --> 00:09:41.039
It may come the next day.
00:09:41.360 --> 00:09:49.840
Because everything that God does, he does intentionally, and it's according to his timeline, and it's actually what is actually best for us.
00:09:50.480 --> 00:09:57.440
So here's what's cool Moses also is telling them, You will know that it was the Lord when he gives you what does it say?
00:09:59.120 --> 00:10:02.559
And all the carnivores said, Thank God.
00:10:02.639 --> 00:10:10.559
And all the gluten-free people also said, Because of all you had was bread, you ain't gonna be with them much longer, are you?
00:10:10.879 --> 00:10:16.960
So they get bread and they get meat in the evening and all the bread you want.
00:10:17.039 --> 00:10:25.279
I mean, they're getting a buffet of bread, as much bread as they can possibly consume, because God has heard their grumbling.
00:10:25.600 --> 00:10:31.759
And so that evening, wouldn't you know, a quail came and covered the camp?
00:10:32.320 --> 00:10:34.720
Can you imagine just having quail everywhere?
00:10:35.600 --> 00:10:38.080
From quarreling to quail.
00:10:39.919 --> 00:10:41.600
All these birds all over the place.
00:10:41.759 --> 00:10:42.559
Any hunters in here?
00:10:42.639 --> 00:10:44.000
Anybody you you you like killing?
00:10:44.320 --> 00:10:48.480
Anybody like I know this is hunting I know we're missing some of our bow hunters because it's October.
00:10:48.799 --> 00:10:49.919
Anybody kill quail?
00:10:50.480 --> 00:10:51.120
Anybody quail?
00:10:51.440 --> 00:10:52.399
Anybody eat quail?
00:10:53.120 --> 00:10:56.159
Yeah, it's kind of a fascinating thing to eat.
00:10:56.320 --> 00:10:58.320
Uh it's a small bird.
00:10:58.639 --> 00:11:07.279
And uh last week, uh the the um instructor that's doing our adult Bible study after the nine o'clock service, she uh this is her second week.
00:11:07.440 --> 00:11:12.320
If you want to come early to this service, you can come and join in on the class uh next week.
00:11:12.480 --> 00:11:15.759
She decided to go find quail, which actually took her a little bit of research.
00:11:15.919 --> 00:11:20.559
She had to go find it at a specific grocery store, found out it's actually pretty expensive.
00:11:20.639 --> 00:11:30.720
Uh, but she cooked it and she brought it to Shepherd's Gate last Sunday because she thought that I should have an object lesson so that I could tell you all about quail.
00:11:30.960 --> 00:11:38.240
So last Sunday, after this service, uh I got to eat quail with some of our staff in the West lobby.
00:11:38.399 --> 00:11:43.759
Thanks be to God, she covered it with butter and lots of lemon and salt and pepper.
00:11:43.919 --> 00:11:45.919
And do you know what quail tastes like?
00:11:46.799 --> 00:11:48.159
How did you know?
00:11:48.559 --> 00:11:57.919
It's like no matter what you eat, you can eat a bunny, you can eat a quail, you can eat any one of those small little things, and they all, at the end of the day, all still taste like chicken.
00:11:58.799 --> 00:11:59.759
Here's what happened.
00:11:59.840 --> 00:12:01.679
The Israelites did what they were told.
00:12:01.840 --> 00:12:04.559
Some gathered much, some little.
00:12:04.799 --> 00:12:07.840
Now watch, you're gonna see this other little miracle taking place.
00:12:08.080 --> 00:12:15.519
And when they measured it by an omer, which is just a percentage, the one who gathered much did not have too much.
00:12:15.919 --> 00:12:16.720
Interesting.
00:12:16.960 --> 00:12:20.960
And the one who gathered little did not have too little.
00:12:21.360 --> 00:12:25.600
Everyone had gathered just as much as they needed.
00:12:26.879 --> 00:12:32.000
That God provided for each person according to their need.
00:12:32.639 --> 00:12:39.360
And even though some of them may have been younger, some of them may have been able to gather more or fill up more baskets, it didn't matter.
00:12:39.600 --> 00:12:45.440
Miraculously, God is still taking care of his children.
00:12:46.080 --> 00:12:49.679
And I was thinking about this as it relates kind of to our lives.
00:12:50.320 --> 00:12:53.279
Sometimes we can look at what other people have.
00:12:53.679 --> 00:13:05.440
We can look at their houses, we can look at their cars, we can look at their clothes, we can look at what we perceive as their bank accounts, and we say, Well, God, why do you give them so much?
00:13:05.519 --> 00:13:08.720
And why does it seem like they have life so easy?
00:13:09.120 --> 00:13:15.360
When in reality, you have no idea what that family or that individual is dealing with on a personal level.
00:13:16.000 --> 00:13:24.559
And it kind of hit me this way this week that at the end of the day, especially for us as Americans, we do way too much grumbling and complaining.
00:13:24.799 --> 00:13:27.840
Like we are so blessed to live in the country that we live in.
00:13:28.000 --> 00:13:28.639
Amen?
00:13:29.039 --> 00:13:32.960
And here's the thing we all have to go to the same grocery store.
00:13:33.279 --> 00:13:36.720
We all have to go and get the same types of food.
00:13:37.039 --> 00:13:51.919
Now, we can decide when we go to the egg aisle if we want to buy the dozen eggs that are$22,000 because they're organic and pasture-raised, and you know, they, you know, they put them to bed by reading to them and patting to them and they're free range.
00:13:52.080 --> 00:13:57.440
If you have the ability to do that and that makes you feel good about yourself, fine, then buy the really expensive eggs.
00:13:57.679 --> 00:14:00.240
But there's also other options there.
00:14:01.279 --> 00:14:06.720
But at the end of the day, yet God provides for every single one of us, regardless of our paycheck.
00:14:07.039 --> 00:14:12.720
What I love is, you know what the great equalizer is, is we're all paying the same amount at the gas pump.
00:14:12.799 --> 00:14:29.759
And we all say when we really should be grateful that we have cars and have vehicles when you look at the rest of the world, that most of them spend all their time walking or using animals for transportation.
00:14:31.039 --> 00:14:32.879
It's getting quiet in here.
00:14:33.440 --> 00:14:34.320
Think about it.
00:14:34.480 --> 00:14:36.559
This is what Moses told them, by the way.
00:14:36.879 --> 00:14:39.519
No one is to keep any of it until morning.
00:14:40.399 --> 00:14:42.000
Fascinating, isn't it?
00:14:42.240 --> 00:14:48.000
No leftovers, no hiding it in your pillow, no putting it in the back part of your tent.
00:14:48.240 --> 00:14:52.879
Whatever you, you know, even if you did a good job and you gathered more than somebody else, it doesn't matter.
00:14:52.960 --> 00:14:54.320
You are to dispose of it.
00:14:54.559 --> 00:14:56.320
Get rid of it.
00:14:56.799 --> 00:15:00.720
Why would God want them to get rid of it each and every night?
00:15:01.679 --> 00:15:03.279
Because he knew, he was testing them.
00:15:03.360 --> 00:15:04.799
Remember, that's what the text tells us.
00:15:04.960 --> 00:15:13.919
He wants them to know that they are completely dependent on him, and not only they're dependent on him, he will ultimately fulfill everything that they need.
00:15:14.799 --> 00:15:23.840
And I was thinking about it in this regard, in our time, how many people they get so fixated on their financial portfolios.
00:15:24.559 --> 00:15:36.240
People they get so fixated on the stock market, and they instead of it being social media and instead of it being other apps, their apps are all alerts about what stocks are going up or down.
00:15:36.399 --> 00:15:39.840
And so they wake up in the morning and the first thing they look at is their portfolio.
00:15:39.919 --> 00:15:46.320
And when they go to bed at night, the first thing or the last thing that they look at is whether or not their portfolio is meeting certain criteria.
00:15:46.399 --> 00:15:52.399
And people get so upset and so completely consumed living this way.
00:15:53.039 --> 00:15:54.240
Or I'll give you another example.
00:15:54.320 --> 00:15:56.399
How many of you have ever seen the show Shark Tank?
00:15:56.480 --> 00:15:57.840
You watch the show Shark Tank?
00:15:58.000 --> 00:15:59.919
It's a good wholesome family show.
00:16:00.159 --> 00:16:06.399
Entrepreneurs come on and they make pitches because they need investors to help bring their business to the next level.
00:16:06.559 --> 00:16:12.879
And so there's a team of usually five investors that one's a billionaire, the rest of them are multimillionaires.
00:16:13.200 --> 00:16:21.840
And so they're gonna ask questions and decide if they want to partner with this entrepreneur and whatever it is that they're proposing to sell.
00:16:22.000 --> 00:16:22.879
And I love the show.
00:16:22.960 --> 00:16:29.600
It's a family-friendly show that my family we can all watch together, but there's one part of the show that I don't like.
00:16:29.840 --> 00:16:32.720
Can I tell you this morning the part of the show that I really don't like?
00:16:33.440 --> 00:16:44.879
The part that I don't like is this is that these very rich people, the sharks, as they're called, will often flash back to when they first started out.
00:16:45.279 --> 00:16:53.600
And they'll say things like this Well, when I was this age, or when I was first starting my company, I didn't sleep.
00:16:53.840 --> 00:17:04.480
I worked seven days a week, and I work 24 hours a day, and I, I, I, I, and I had to sacrifice, and I had to eat hot dogs every single day, and blah, blah, blah.
00:17:04.640 --> 00:17:11.279
And now look at me, I'm a billionaire, and I got my own private jet, and I got multiple houses, and me, me, me, me, me.
00:17:12.799 --> 00:17:15.599
And I look at my kids and I wonder, are they absorbing this?
00:17:15.680 --> 00:17:18.720
Do they think that this is the American dream?
00:17:19.200 --> 00:17:27.200
That when you're in your teens or your twenties or your thirties or your forties, that nothing else matters but the almighty American dollar.
00:17:27.599 --> 00:17:30.079
And you should pursue that at all costs.
00:17:30.319 --> 00:17:38.079
Even if it means sacrificing your marriage and sacrificing your kids and sacrificing your family and sacrificing the people that you go to church with.
00:17:38.400 --> 00:17:45.920
Because eventually you'll get to a point where you can be just like them and sit back and just enjoy the rest of your life.
00:17:46.079 --> 00:17:48.480
I mean, is that really what's supposed to happen?
00:17:48.799 --> 00:17:52.720
It seems that the Bible has laid out rhythms for us.
00:17:53.200 --> 00:18:01.279
That there's these rhythms of life that we are to pursue, and part of it is rest, which you're going to see in a moment.
00:18:01.680 --> 00:18:06.240
Now, there's a story that's kind of fascinating that came out of World War II.
00:18:07.039 --> 00:18:19.200
Where people were putting being put into these camps as their houses were being destroyed, and you know the havoc that war can cause a nation, in particular children.
00:18:19.599 --> 00:18:28.000
And there was an aid worker that was noticing something that was prevalent in one of the camps, in that the kids were having a hard time sleeping at night.
00:18:28.319 --> 00:18:29.680
Of course, they're living in fear.
00:18:29.759 --> 00:18:33.200
Of course, they don't know uh what's gonna happen to them and their family.
00:18:33.359 --> 00:18:36.240
They don't know if they're gonna have a meal the next day.
00:18:36.480 --> 00:18:43.519
And for some reason, this aid worker figured out how to help the kids sleep at night, and this was the remedy.
00:18:43.839 --> 00:18:50.240
Is they gave every single kid a small piece of bread that they could hold on to.
00:18:50.559 --> 00:18:52.640
Not to eat, just to hold on to.
00:18:52.880 --> 00:19:06.960
And because that kid held on to that piece of bread, somehow that gave them confidence and assurance that if they woke up the next day, they would still be holding on to that bread and they wouldn't be hungry.
00:19:08.319 --> 00:19:17.039
And yet in the text today, God is asking his children to do the exact opposite, to give up everything.
00:19:17.759 --> 00:19:22.960
Because what we find out is that there were some that paid no attention to Moses.
00:19:23.920 --> 00:19:25.039
Bad idea.
00:19:25.279 --> 00:19:34.960
They kept part of it until the morning, and wouldn't you know, the stuff that they kept that they didn't dispose of, maggots were all over it, and it began to smell.
00:19:35.599 --> 00:19:41.920
Which I'm wondering, did Moses know when he was walking by their tents who the smelly tents were and who the you know non-smelly tents were?
00:19:42.079 --> 00:19:44.799
Like, was it just obvious to everybody else?
00:19:45.039 --> 00:19:47.359
And look at his response as their leader.
00:19:47.519 --> 00:19:54.079
He's upset with them, he's frustrated with them, he's following the same rules that they have to follow as well.
00:19:54.559 --> 00:20:06.000
Well, again, on the sixth day they gathered twice as much, two omers for each person, and this time you find the leaders actually going to Moses and reporting to him this miracle.
00:20:06.079 --> 00:20:06.960
This it's crazy.
00:20:07.039 --> 00:20:12.559
We go out and we gather the same amount, but yet God is the one that keeps blessing it and multiplying it.
00:20:12.799 --> 00:20:16.160
And so he says to them, This is what the Lord commanded.
00:20:16.319 --> 00:20:21.599
Tomorrow is to be a day of Sabbath rest, a holy Sabbath to the Lord.
00:20:21.759 --> 00:20:26.000
So bake what you want to bake and boil what you want to boil.
00:20:26.240 --> 00:20:27.680
Those are great instructions.
00:20:27.759 --> 00:20:31.039
All of you that love cooking, spend all day in the kitchen.
00:20:31.279 --> 00:20:37.519
Bake it all, boil it all, save whatever is left, and keep it until the morning.
00:20:38.319 --> 00:20:41.119
So now the instructions are reversed.
00:20:41.519 --> 00:20:53.039
Now he's telling them, and they would have known, this would have gotten out, that those that kept the food before, it spoiled and was full of worms, and now all of a sudden he's saying, Late, now this time you're going to keep it.
00:20:53.279 --> 00:20:57.680
And wouldn't you know that most of them did what Moses commanded them to do?
00:20:57.839 --> 00:21:03.759
And when they woke up the next day, the food that they had, it didn't stink, and there weren't maggots in it.
00:21:04.079 --> 00:21:07.279
And so, because of that, Moses is telling them, eat it.
00:21:07.599 --> 00:21:11.759
God is providing for you even on the seventh day.
00:21:12.079 --> 00:21:15.680
See, God could have told them, hey, you know what, you're just gonna take a day to fast.
00:21:16.000 --> 00:21:19.039
Many of you said it's 40 plus days you can go without food.
00:21:19.200 --> 00:21:21.279
They got water, they just don't have food.
00:21:21.519 --> 00:21:29.119
And yet God is so merciful that he's allowing them to continue to have food and nourishment for their bodies even on the Sabbath.
00:21:29.440 --> 00:21:31.200
Today is a Sabbath to the Lord.
00:21:31.359 --> 00:21:33.680
You are you are not gonna find any on the ground.
00:21:33.839 --> 00:21:36.559
By the way, here's a warning: it's pointless to go out.
00:21:36.799 --> 00:21:42.640
Six days you're to gather, and every time the seventh day comes around, there's not going to be anything for you to gather.
00:21:42.799 --> 00:21:45.920
I'm God, and I'm not gonna produce the food for you.
00:21:46.640 --> 00:21:48.240
And so I was thinking about this.
00:21:48.400 --> 00:21:53.519
Why is God so insistent on his people resting?
00:21:55.279 --> 00:21:56.960
Why does he want us to rest?
00:22:00.000 --> 00:22:02.799
Why aren't we just all workaholics?
00:22:04.799 --> 00:22:12.720
Some of you, you're married to a workaholic, and you're not a workaholic, and there's a little friction in your marriage.
00:22:16.559 --> 00:22:18.720
We're kind of conditioned this way.
00:22:19.680 --> 00:22:28.880
Our society teaches and rewards this kind of system for never knowing how to stop and take a break.
00:22:29.200 --> 00:22:41.519
I remember back three years ago, we were going through Genesis and we were in the beginning of Genesis, going through the creation account, and we were talking about God making the world in six days, and then what did God Almighty do on the seventh day?
00:22:42.400 --> 00:22:51.039
And do you know I still remember that after that service, people were upset with me and told me to stop telling people to take breaks?
00:22:52.400 --> 00:22:56.640
Because this is how much of a spiritual issue it is for you and for me.
00:22:56.799 --> 00:22:57.839
Nope, I gotta do more.
00:22:57.920 --> 00:22:59.039
Nope, I can't take a break.
00:22:59.119 --> 00:23:00.799
No, I cannot rest.
00:23:01.119 --> 00:23:05.359
Why do we resist the rest that God gives us?
00:23:06.480 --> 00:23:10.720
I'll tell you, this has been a struggle of mine for my entire life.
00:23:11.359 --> 00:23:13.920
I've always been a workaholic.
00:23:14.000 --> 00:23:17.440
I've always struggled to have the proper margins in my life.
00:23:17.680 --> 00:23:27.440
Thanks be to God, He gave me a wife who has helped slow me down to appreciate the other things that this world has to offer.
00:23:28.000 --> 00:23:32.720
I can go all the way back to 18 years ago when we first got married.
00:23:32.960 --> 00:23:36.960
And we would argue and bicker about what we should do on vacation.
00:23:37.359 --> 00:23:44.960
Because up to that point, I just figured when you go on vacation, it was to go and to do sightseeing and to learn more and to be active.
00:23:45.200 --> 00:23:54.799
And her version of a vacation was to go to a beach and to put a put a chair in the sand and then you just sit there for like eight hours.
00:23:57.359 --> 00:23:59.680
And my version of that was my interpretation.
00:23:59.920 --> 00:24:01.119
That's such a waste of time.
00:24:01.279 --> 00:24:02.400
Who would ever do that?
00:24:02.559 --> 00:24:08.880
You could be productive, you could be learning, you could be growing, you could be making more money somewhere.
00:24:10.640 --> 00:24:24.880
And I'm so thankful that over time I finally learned to appreciate sitting in a chair without a laptop or a cell phone because she takes it away on my vacations now.
00:24:26.079 --> 00:24:38.480
And all you hear are the birds and the crashing of the waves, and you can feel the breeze across your face.
00:24:39.839 --> 00:24:50.960
And literally having your body decompressed and your mind actually resting long enough to realize that your body needs rest.
00:24:51.839 --> 00:24:53.279
My body needs rest.
00:24:53.519 --> 00:24:55.599
Your body needs rest.
00:24:56.480 --> 00:25:00.640
Why do we resist the rest that God gives us?
00:25:01.680 --> 00:25:04.000
And what are we modeling for this next generation?
00:25:04.559 --> 00:25:05.680
Next generation.
00:25:06.400 --> 00:25:16.400
It's fascinating because even though He gives them this command, and even though they had food for day seven, some of them that wasn't good enough, and so some of them actually went out on that seventh day.
00:25:16.640 --> 00:25:18.400
And look at what it says.
00:25:18.720 --> 00:25:24.240
They wandered aimlessly in the wilderness, and it was completely pointless.
00:25:25.200 --> 00:25:27.279
You wonder how long they actually wandered around for?
00:25:27.359 --> 00:25:29.200
How long do you think they wandered around for?
00:25:29.759 --> 00:25:30.559
An hour?
00:25:31.519 --> 00:25:37.440
You think some of them were so stinking stubborn and they were out there for like six hours, seven hours, eight hours?
00:25:37.839 --> 00:25:39.039
I'm gonna find food.
00:25:39.200 --> 00:25:39.920
You don't need food.
00:25:40.079 --> 00:25:41.200
You already got food.
00:25:41.519 --> 00:25:44.400
God already doubled it for you on day six.
00:25:44.960 --> 00:25:46.880
We are so stubborn.
00:25:47.519 --> 00:25:49.279
We are so stubborn as human beings.
00:25:49.359 --> 00:25:55.039
We often try to do things on our own outside the will of our heavenly Father.
00:25:55.839 --> 00:26:01.279
And maybe today God's using this text to say to you what he said to me.
00:26:01.519 --> 00:26:03.920
You gotta take a deep breath.
00:26:04.880 --> 00:26:09.680
You gotta remember I'm the one that supplies all of your needs, not just some of them.
00:26:09.839 --> 00:26:11.440
I don't need your help, Tim.
00:26:11.680 --> 00:26:17.039
I provide all of your needs according to my riches and according to my glory.
00:26:17.839 --> 00:26:29.839
We are sustained on this earth, make no mistake, because we have a heavenly Father who loves us, who has given us his Son, Jesus Christ, to be our Sabbath.
00:26:30.160 --> 00:26:30.799
Amen?
00:26:31.359 --> 00:26:39.039
This is why Jesus said to the people that were gathered around him, and he says it to us today.
00:26:39.279 --> 00:26:47.680
I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.
00:26:47.920 --> 00:26:50.000
And who is that true bread from heaven?
00:26:50.960 --> 00:26:51.920
Jesus.
00:26:52.640 --> 00:26:54.160
Yes, we follow the Sabbath.
00:26:54.400 --> 00:26:57.119
Being in church, do you know being here today is rest?
00:26:57.839 --> 00:27:04.079
Singing songs of worship, praying, seeing a baptism, participating in holy communion.
00:27:04.319 --> 00:27:08.960
All of those are gifts of God, from God, through Jesus.
00:27:09.119 --> 00:27:12.640
Those are all rest because Jesus is our Sabbath rest.
00:27:12.799 --> 00:27:18.720
All of those are just the blessings that come from having Him be the center of our lives.
00:27:19.200 --> 00:27:21.599
That's why it's difficult in the day and age we live.
00:27:21.680 --> 00:27:28.160
People have activities, people have conflicts, people have all sorts of things that are vying for their attention.
00:27:28.400 --> 00:27:30.079
And sometimes it's our own fault.
00:27:30.240 --> 00:27:34.960
Sometimes it's the act of the devil, sometimes it is the world that's pulling us in these different directions.
00:27:35.119 --> 00:27:43.759
And I just believe that God today is calling us back to this lifestyle, this rhythm of how He created us and knows what is best for us.
00:27:44.000 --> 00:27:44.640
Amen.
00:27:44.960 --> 00:27:47.200
This is why we pray these words in the Lord's Prayer.
00:27:47.440 --> 00:27:51.119
Give us this day our daily bread.
00:27:52.000 --> 00:27:55.519
Not our weekly bread or a monthly bread or a yearly bread.
00:27:55.759 --> 00:27:56.960
Daily bread.
00:27:57.440 --> 00:28:00.960
And this isn't the physical bread that he gives us.
00:28:01.119 --> 00:28:08.799
This is the spiritual bread that comes down from on high for you or and to me to nourish our souls.
00:28:09.039 --> 00:28:14.480
To remind us how much we are loved by God and that he will care for us.
00:28:16.160 --> 00:28:21.039
We've got to stop stressing and stop worrying about all these things that we get ourselves so fixated on.
00:28:22.000 --> 00:28:23.759
And finally, what does he do?
00:28:24.079 --> 00:28:29.440
He wants to give them this object lesson that they're gonna carry now from this point forward.
00:28:29.599 --> 00:28:39.359
And he tells them to take some of this manna and to put it in a jar and they're to use that so that they can teach their kids, hey, God's the one that provided for us.
00:28:39.519 --> 00:28:44.319
God is the one that got us through this time in this place in history.
00:28:44.880 --> 00:28:49.440
And then finally, the last verse today it says, The Israelites ate manna for how long?
00:28:51.200 --> 00:28:52.240
Oh man.
00:28:53.200 --> 00:28:55.839
I mean, if it was sourdough bread, I get it.
00:28:56.720 --> 00:28:58.640
But 40 years.
00:28:58.960 --> 00:28:59.599
Wow.
00:29:00.960 --> 00:29:05.599
Until the land was settled, until they reached the border of Canaan.
00:29:06.079 --> 00:29:10.640
This last verse is just a prophetic verse because they're not to the promised land yet.
00:29:10.720 --> 00:29:15.440
There's still some more churns and some obstacles waiting for them.
00:29:15.759 --> 00:29:19.200
This is just, again, a reminder of what is to come.
00:29:19.920 --> 00:29:22.960
And so let me ask you this morning: what is it for you?
00:29:23.599 --> 00:29:25.680
What is holding you back?
00:29:26.400 --> 00:29:31.680
Where is God speaking to you today through his word that maybe you need to let go?
00:29:31.920 --> 00:29:45.680
And you need to trust that God is at work in your life and in your marriage and with your family and with your job and with your bank account.
00:29:46.640 --> 00:30:00.400
That whatever circumstance you are facing right now, in this moment, on this day, he sees you, he knows you, and he is already orchestrating things that you don't even need to worry about.
00:30:02.079 --> 00:30:06.960
Instead, if God has blessed you with somebody else that's telling you to slow down, would you listen to them?
00:30:07.599 --> 00:30:15.359
Maybe some of you today, this is what God is saying to you, is that you actually need to take a day off of work this week.
00:30:20.880 --> 00:30:23.759
And do nothing the entire day.
00:30:25.680 --> 00:30:27.279
I can't do that.
00:30:28.079 --> 00:30:33.920
Maybe the most holy thing that you could do this week is actually get eight hours of sleep one night.
00:30:35.519 --> 00:30:45.039
Maybe God is challenging you to stop micromanaging everybody else in your life that's resting, that gets this.
00:30:45.599 --> 00:30:50.960
And maybe God is inviting you into that rest because he knows that's what's best for you.
00:30:51.279 --> 00:30:59.200
Wherever you find yourself today, know he sees you, he forgives you, he loves you, and he wants what's best for you.
00:30:59.440 --> 00:30:59.920
Amen.
00:31:00.240 --> 00:31:02.240
Will you bow your heads and close your eyes with me this morning?
00:31:02.400 --> 00:31:05.359
Heavenly Father, I thank you for all my friends here today.
00:31:06.799 --> 00:31:12.480
God, and once again, just an ancient tax, but yet so relevant for our lives.
00:31:12.880 --> 00:31:30.079
God, even the way that it convicted me over and over again this week, and God, the opportunity to preach and present your holy word to this gathered body of believers, knowing and trusting that you're at work, and that it's all ultimately, God, for our good.
00:31:31.440 --> 00:31:33.200
So be with my friends today.
00:31:33.440 --> 00:31:47.759
God help us as we go into another week to surrender to you, to walk in trusting you are at work, and you will provide every single one of the needs that we have.
00:31:48.400 --> 00:31:53.039
So, God, now as we close our time together by singing this song, bless God.
00:31:53.279 --> 00:32:04.079
May the words of our mouth as we sing these songs be a testament of our faith and our hope and our trust in you, our one true God who is our provider.
00:32:04.319 --> 00:32:08.400
We love you, we thank you, we pray all these things in your most holy and precious name.
00:32:08.640 --> 00:32:09.279
Amen.
00:32:09.519 --> 00:32:12.079
Will we please stand and let's sing this song together?
00:00:03.279 --> 00:00:12.720
Well, today we are in week six of our Exodus Part 2 series where we've been uh walking through chapter by chapter, verse by verse, through the second book of the Bible.
00:00:12.960 --> 00:00:19.440
If you're new here, what we would encourage you to do is not only stop by the Welcome Center after the service, uh, we do have refreshments.
00:00:19.600 --> 00:00:22.079
Some of us on staff are gonna be out in the West lobby.
00:00:22.160 --> 00:00:23.519
We'd love to connect with you.
00:00:23.600 --> 00:00:26.480
Uh, but we always challenge people to give Shepherd's Gate three weeks.
00:00:26.559 --> 00:00:33.039
Just come for three weeks in a row and see if God would maybe be leading you to call Shepherd's Gate your home church.
00:00:33.200 --> 00:00:36.079
Uh, you can see here's the rest of the schedule for October.
00:00:36.159 --> 00:00:42.560
So we're gonna be uh doing all of Exodus 16 today, and then we'll be breaking up Exodus 17 into two parts.
00:00:42.640 --> 00:00:45.920
Uh, because we just believe that people should be in church every single Sunday.
00:00:46.079 --> 00:00:46.719
Amen?
00:00:47.359 --> 00:00:50.079
And some of you might be wondering, why do you say that every single week?
00:00:50.240 --> 00:00:56.240
Because the national average, no matter what generation you're from, is two times a month, which is what?
00:00:57.119 --> 00:00:57.679
15%.
00:00:58.320 --> 00:00:58.880
Bad.
00:00:59.439 --> 00:01:00.079
Bad.
00:01:00.320 --> 00:01:03.119
So we want to live differently here at Shepherd's Gate.
00:01:03.200 --> 00:01:07.680
We want to live unconventionally, and we just think God has something for you each and every week.
00:01:07.760 --> 00:01:13.040
If you can't be here, obviously uh we would love to have you join us online or watch later on demand.
00:01:13.120 --> 00:01:15.120
Uh, there's some other ideas there as well.
00:01:15.200 --> 00:01:19.040
And the easiest way to stay uh up on everything at Shepherd's Gate is to download our app.
00:01:19.120 --> 00:01:21.519
And if you're new, there's a tap tag in front of you.
00:01:21.599 --> 00:01:29.840
Uh you can do that and you can see what we've preached in the past, but you can also uh watch and track what we're going to be doing in the future as well.
00:01:30.079 --> 00:01:33.599
And so if you weren't here last week, we ended with chapter 15.
00:01:33.760 --> 00:01:36.879
Uh, kind of the theme of last week was the children of Israel.
00:01:37.040 --> 00:01:39.439
Basically, what happened was they left the Red Sea.
00:01:39.519 --> 00:01:41.200
Moses kind of had to move them along.
00:01:41.359 --> 00:01:47.519
They got out into the desert and they didn't have water for three days, which is kind of a tough situation to be in.
00:01:47.599 --> 00:01:49.040
They grumbled, they complained.
00:01:49.200 --> 00:01:51.439
God miraculously provided water.
00:01:51.519 --> 00:01:53.439
Uh, so he told Moses what to do.
00:01:53.599 --> 00:01:56.400
Moses followed those instructions, and so they had water.
00:01:56.560 --> 00:02:02.879
And then the second half of Matthew 15, God actually led them from that place to a different place called Elam.
00:02:02.959 --> 00:02:03.599
You guys remember this?
00:02:03.680 --> 00:02:06.799
Where there was 12 springs and 70 palm trees.
00:02:07.040 --> 00:02:10.400
Basically Aruba in Egypt, okay?
00:02:10.639 --> 00:02:13.919
I mean, where do you find something like this in the middle of the desert?
00:02:14.000 --> 00:02:16.400
But because he's God, he knows where everything's at.
00:02:16.560 --> 00:02:26.400
And so he brings them there to a place of rest and to a place of abundance, because they obviously had so much water to drink from that they were all full.
00:02:26.560 --> 00:02:33.919
Now, chapter 16, if you have your Bible, if you brought your Bible, if you want to churn there, I'm gonna be going through different parts of it because you heard it read.
00:02:34.000 --> 00:02:35.360
So this is where it starts.
00:02:35.439 --> 00:02:48.719
It tells us in the beginning of chapter 16 that they're gonna move on from this really nice place and they're gonna be heading further into the desert because their final destination is not Elam, it's the promised land.
00:02:49.199 --> 00:02:55.439
And so he's got to gather all these people, all their possessions, all their animals, and get them moving once again.
00:02:55.599 --> 00:03:00.240
And wouldn't you know they get out into the desert, and what was the theme that you heard over and over again in the video?
00:03:00.400 --> 00:03:01.120
What did they do?
00:03:02.000 --> 00:03:03.360
Oh, you heard it too.
00:03:03.919 --> 00:03:09.919
Isn't it funny how many times the word grumbling or grumbled is in just one chapter of the Bible?
00:03:10.080 --> 00:03:14.479
And they're grumbling not just to Moses, but to Moses' brother Aaron.
00:03:14.800 --> 00:03:19.439
Now, last week I asked you, how long can a person survive without water?
00:03:19.840 --> 00:03:25.039
And we had some, you know, nurses in here, and I think I think we ended up at seven was the number.
00:03:25.199 --> 00:03:28.159
Someone saw somebody live seven days without water.
00:03:28.319 --> 00:03:33.759
The question today for this text is well, how long can a person survive without food?
00:03:35.280 --> 00:03:35.840
40 days.
00:03:36.400 --> 00:03:36.879
Is that it?
00:03:36.960 --> 00:03:38.560
At day 41 you die?
00:03:39.120 --> 00:03:40.319
Has anyone beaten that?
00:03:40.400 --> 00:03:40.960
I mean, I don't know.
00:03:41.039 --> 00:03:41.599
I'm asking you.
00:03:41.759 --> 00:03:42.639
I didn't look it up.
00:03:42.800 --> 00:03:51.680
I'm curious, because these human bodies that God has created and given us, it's amazing how long we can live without food.
00:03:52.400 --> 00:03:58.479
Now, the emotional side of us will tell you that we can't live a couple hours without food.
00:03:59.199 --> 00:04:02.960
It's amazing how grouch we get if we're not fed.
00:04:03.039 --> 00:04:05.280
Some of you, you get really grouchy.
00:04:05.439 --> 00:04:07.360
Uh, but that's another sermon.
00:04:07.520 --> 00:04:09.120
Anyways, verse 3.
00:04:09.919 --> 00:04:14.719
So the Israelites say to them, this is this is pattern, this is the pattern that we've seen this as well.
00:04:14.879 --> 00:04:17.680
They get so dramatic when they don't have food or water.
00:04:17.920 --> 00:04:21.680
If only we had died by the Lord's hand in Egypt.
00:04:21.920 --> 00:04:23.680
I mean, how pathetic is that?
00:04:24.000 --> 00:04:27.600
You wish that God would have killed you while you were a slave in Egypt?
00:04:28.240 --> 00:04:35.360
Or they say this, there we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted.
00:04:35.680 --> 00:04:44.000
Forget about the fact that we were slaves, we owned nothing, we were beaten, and we were building buildings for the Egyptians.
00:04:44.160 --> 00:04:48.560
But at least at the end of the night we got to sit around and have a nice pot of stew.
00:04:48.800 --> 00:04:50.959
I mean, how ridiculous the complaining is.
00:04:51.199 --> 00:04:52.160
What did you do, Moses?
00:04:52.480 --> 00:04:56.959
You brought us into the desert to starve this entire assembly and to watch us die?
00:04:57.839 --> 00:05:05.759
Now, if I was Moses, and because I'm sarcastic, I would have turned to the people of Israel and said, that's exactly what I destined to do.
00:05:06.000 --> 00:05:08.319
In fact, you may have forgotten, I was fine.
00:05:08.399 --> 00:05:18.800
I was married, I had kids, I had a whole life outside of Egypt, and some person named God showed up at a burning bush and told me I had to come back and rescue you guys.
00:05:19.040 --> 00:05:27.839
And since I did what God told me to do and I rescued you out of Egypt and led you through the Red Sea, it was also that you could die right now in this moment in the desert with no witnesses.
00:05:28.480 --> 00:05:31.920
Like, come on! What is going on with you people?
00:05:32.079 --> 00:05:39.519
How do you go from seeing miracle after miracle after miracle after miracle, and yet you still doubt?
00:05:40.240 --> 00:05:43.759
You still don't know if God is gonna come through for you.
00:05:44.480 --> 00:05:52.319
God hears all this complaining and he says to Moses, just so you know, I know what's going on, and I'm gonna provide once again.
00:05:52.399 --> 00:05:54.800
I'm gonna rain down bread from heaven for you.
00:05:55.040 --> 00:05:57.040
And the people are to go out each day.
00:05:57.199 --> 00:06:03.920
Now, this is important, these are the instructions, and gather enough for that specific day.
00:06:04.240 --> 00:06:06.240
In this way, I'm going to test them.
00:06:06.399 --> 00:06:07.759
This is what God does.
00:06:08.000 --> 00:06:12.399
He tested them last week with the water, he's testing them this week with the food.
00:06:12.639 --> 00:06:18.160
Remember, God got them out of Egypt, but God still has to get Egypt out of their heart.
00:06:18.319 --> 00:06:26.639
Just like God has delivered us through his Son Jesus Christ, but God still every single day is working on getting the world out of our hearts.
00:06:26.800 --> 00:06:27.759
Did you know that?
00:06:28.000 --> 00:06:37.920
That God still has to get all of the corruption of this world out of our hearts, which was why we're still here, which is why we're still breathing, which is why he hasn't taken us home.
00:06:38.079 --> 00:06:45.759
He still has more people to save on this planet, and he still has more people to turn into the image of his son each and every day.
00:06:46.000 --> 00:06:50.319
So he's saying, I'm going to test them and I'm going to see if they're going to follow my instructions.
00:06:50.560 --> 00:06:55.120
And he specifically says that on the sixth day, they're to prepare what they bring in.
00:06:55.279 --> 00:07:01.439
And by the way, on the sixth day when they're out gathering the food, they're going to bring in twice as much.
00:07:02.000 --> 00:07:04.879
Here's an important thing you need to know about this passage.
00:07:05.120 --> 00:07:07.759
This doesn't mean that they're doing twice the work.
00:07:08.079 --> 00:07:12.959
It doesn't mean that they had to get up earlier or stay out twice as long.
00:07:13.199 --> 00:07:16.399
It's that God performs miracles within miracles.
00:07:16.560 --> 00:07:34.079
So he performs the miracle of providing the bread, but he also is performing the miracle as they're gathering the bread, as they're gathering it, wouldn't you know that it would magically and spiritually become double what it was any other day that they had gathered it?
00:07:34.480 --> 00:07:39.600
Does this remind you of any testimony or story in the New Testament?
00:07:42.399 --> 00:07:43.279
Exactly.
00:07:43.600 --> 00:07:52.240
When Jesus was out in the wilderness with thousands of people, and the people are hungry, and they're getting a little ornery.
00:07:52.399 --> 00:07:56.160
And then the disciples go to Jesus and say, Jesus, I don't know if you can hear.
00:07:56.240 --> 00:07:58.399
They're getting ornery and they're hungry.
00:07:58.560 --> 00:08:00.000
We should just let them go.
00:08:00.240 --> 00:08:08.079
And Jesus, not being done with teaching and not being done laying his hands on them and healing them, decides that the disciples should figure out a plan.
00:08:08.160 --> 00:08:23.199
And eventually it leads to a little boy with five loaves and two fishes, Jesus blessing, breaking that meal, and then magically, boom, all of a sudden, God multiplies it because God has the ability to do that.
00:08:23.439 --> 00:08:25.519
And so that's what you're seeing here as well.
00:08:25.680 --> 00:08:28.480
He's multiplying it even in their midst.
00:08:28.720 --> 00:08:40.080
And so Moses and Aaron, this is so fascinating to me, they say to the Israelites after they get all the information from God, in the evening, you will know that it was the Lord who brought you out of Egypt.
00:08:40.320 --> 00:08:42.000
Like it's going to sink into your brain.
00:08:42.080 --> 00:08:45.759
And oh, by the way, in the morning, you're going to see it with your eyes.
00:08:45.840 --> 00:08:51.759
You're going to see the glory of the Lord because you're going to see all of this bread that he has provided.
00:08:52.159 --> 00:09:00.799
Now, what I like about this verse is that he knows they're complaining, he knows they're hungry, but he doesn't give them the answer immediately.
00:09:01.120 --> 00:09:11.039
He gives them the answer and the fact that he's working through Moses and Aaron to tell them that he's going to provide, but he's going to make them wait just a little bit longer.
00:09:11.519 --> 00:09:13.600
Don't you find that fascinating?
00:09:13.919 --> 00:09:16.879
That it's not an immediate answer to their prayer.
00:09:17.440 --> 00:09:24.320
He's promising that he's going to provide for them, but he's going to do it in his time and in his way, just as he does with us.
00:09:24.399 --> 00:09:37.600
And sometimes we plead with God or we pray to God or we want God to answer the difficulty that we're going through, and God gives us confirmation, but he might not fulfill that promise that day.
00:09:37.759 --> 00:09:38.720
It may come later.
00:09:38.879 --> 00:09:41.039
It may come the next day.
00:09:41.360 --> 00:09:49.840
Because everything that God does, he does intentionally, and it's according to his timeline, and it's actually what is actually best for us.
00:09:50.480 --> 00:09:57.440
So here's what's cool Moses also is telling them, You will know that it was the Lord when he gives you what does it say?
00:09:59.120 --> 00:10:02.559
And all the carnivores said, Thank God.
00:10:02.639 --> 00:10:10.559
And all the gluten-free people also said, Because of all you had was bread, you ain't gonna be with them much longer, are you?
00:10:10.879 --> 00:10:16.960
So they get bread and they get meat in the evening and all the bread you want.
00:10:17.039 --> 00:10:25.279
I mean, they're getting a buffet of bread, as much bread as they can possibly consume, because God has heard their grumbling.
00:10:25.600 --> 00:10:31.759
And so that evening, wouldn't you know, a quail came and covered the camp?
00:10:32.320 --> 00:10:34.720
Can you imagine just having quail everywhere?
00:10:35.600 --> 00:10:38.080
From quarreling to quail.
00:10:39.919 --> 00:10:41.600
All these birds all over the place.
00:10:41.759 --> 00:10:42.559
Any hunters in here?
00:10:42.639 --> 00:10:44.000
Anybody you you you like killing?
00:10:44.320 --> 00:10:48.480
Anybody like I know this is hunting I know we're missing some of our bow hunters because it's October.
00:10:48.799 --> 00:10:49.919
Anybody kill quail?
00:10:50.480 --> 00:10:51.120
Anybody quail?
00:10:51.440 --> 00:10:52.399
Anybody eat quail?
00:10:53.120 --> 00:10:56.159
Yeah, it's kind of a fascinating thing to eat.
00:10:56.320 --> 00:10:58.320
Uh it's a small bird.
00:10:58.639 --> 00:11:07.279
And uh last week, uh the the um instructor that's doing our adult Bible study after the nine o'clock service, she uh this is her second week.
00:11:07.440 --> 00:11:12.320
If you want to come early to this service, you can come and join in on the class uh next week.
00:11:12.480 --> 00:11:15.759
She decided to go find quail, which actually took her a little bit of research.
00:11:15.919 --> 00:11:20.559
She had to go find it at a specific grocery store, found out it's actually pretty expensive.
00:11:20.639 --> 00:11:30.720
Uh, but she cooked it and she brought it to Shepherd's Gate last Sunday because she thought that I should have an object lesson so that I could tell you all about quail.
00:11:30.960 --> 00:11:38.240
So last Sunday, after this service, uh I got to eat quail with some of our staff in the West lobby.
00:11:38.399 --> 00:11:43.759
Thanks be to God, she covered it with butter and lots of lemon and salt and pepper.
00:11:43.919 --> 00:11:45.919
And do you know what quail tastes like?
00:11:46.799 --> 00:11:48.159
How did you know?
00:11:48.559 --> 00:11:57.919
It's like no matter what you eat, you can eat a bunny, you can eat a quail, you can eat any one of those small little things, and they all, at the end of the day, all still taste like chicken.
00:11:58.799 --> 00:11:59.759
Here's what happened.
00:11:59.840 --> 00:12:01.679
The Israelites did what they were told.
00:12:01.840 --> 00:12:04.559
Some gathered much, some little.
00:12:04.799 --> 00:12:07.840
Now watch, you're gonna see this other little miracle taking place.
00:12:08.080 --> 00:12:15.519
And when they measured it by an omer, which is just a percentage, the one who gathered much did not have too much.
00:12:15.919 --> 00:12:16.720
Interesting.
00:12:16.960 --> 00:12:20.960
And the one who gathered little did not have too little.
00:12:21.360 --> 00:12:25.600
Everyone had gathered just as much as they needed.
00:12:26.879 --> 00:12:32.000
That God provided for each person according to their need.
00:12:32.639 --> 00:12:39.360
And even though some of them may have been younger, some of them may have been able to gather more or fill up more baskets, it didn't matter.
00:12:39.600 --> 00:12:45.440
Miraculously, God is still taking care of his children.
00:12:46.080 --> 00:12:49.679
And I was thinking about this as it relates kind of to our lives.
00:12:50.320 --> 00:12:53.279
Sometimes we can look at what other people have.
00:12:53.679 --> 00:13:05.440
We can look at their houses, we can look at their cars, we can look at their clothes, we can look at what we perceive as their bank accounts, and we say, Well, God, why do you give them so much?
00:13:05.519 --> 00:13:08.720
And why does it seem like they have life so easy?
00:13:09.120 --> 00:13:15.360
When in reality, you have no idea what that family or that individual is dealing with on a personal level.
00:13:16.000 --> 00:13:24.559
And it kind of hit me this way this week that at the end of the day, especially for us as Americans, we do way too much grumbling and complaining.
00:13:24.799 --> 00:13:27.840
Like we are so blessed to live in the country that we live in.
00:13:28.000 --> 00:13:28.639
Amen?
00:13:29.039 --> 00:13:32.960
And here's the thing we all have to go to the same grocery store.
00:13:33.279 --> 00:13:36.720
We all have to go and get the same types of food.
00:13:37.039 --> 00:13:51.919
Now, we can decide when we go to the egg aisle if we want to buy the dozen eggs that are$22,000 because they're organic and pasture-raised, and you know, they, you know, they put them to bed by reading to them and patting to them and they're free range.
00:13:52.080 --> 00:13:57.440
If you have the ability to do that and that makes you feel good about yourself, fine, then buy the really expensive eggs.
00:13:57.679 --> 00:14:00.240
But there's also other options there.
00:14:01.279 --> 00:14:06.720
But at the end of the day, yet God provides for every single one of us, regardless of our paycheck.
00:14:07.039 --> 00:14:12.720
What I love is, you know what the great equalizer is, is we're all paying the same amount at the gas pump.
00:14:12.799 --> 00:14:29.759
And we all say when we really should be grateful that we have cars and have vehicles when you look at the rest of the world, that most of them spend all their time walking or using animals for transportation.
00:14:31.039 --> 00:14:32.879
It's getting quiet in here.
00:14:33.440 --> 00:14:34.320
Think about it.
00:14:34.480 --> 00:14:36.559
This is what Moses told them, by the way.
00:14:36.879 --> 00:14:39.519
No one is to keep any of it until morning.
00:14:40.399 --> 00:14:42.000
Fascinating, isn't it?
00:14:42.240 --> 00:14:48.000
No leftovers, no hiding it in your pillow, no putting it in the back part of your tent.
00:14:48.240 --> 00:14:52.879
Whatever you, you know, even if you did a good job and you gathered more than somebody else, it doesn't matter.
00:14:52.960 --> 00:14:54.320
You are to dispose of it.
00:14:54.559 --> 00:14:56.320
Get rid of it.
00:14:56.799 --> 00:15:00.720
Why would God want them to get rid of it each and every night?
00:15:01.679 --> 00:15:03.279
Because he knew, he was testing them.
00:15:03.360 --> 00:15:04.799
Remember, that's what the text tells us.
00:15:04.960 --> 00:15:13.919
He wants them to know that they are completely dependent on him, and not only they're dependent on him, he will ultimately fulfill everything that they need.
00:15:14.799 --> 00:15:23.840
And I was thinking about it in this regard, in our time, how many people they get so fixated on their financial portfolios.
00:15:24.559 --> 00:15:36.240
People they get so fixated on the stock market, and they instead of it being social media and instead of it being other apps, their apps are all alerts about what stocks are going up or down.
00:15:36.399 --> 00:15:39.840
And so they wake up in the morning and the first thing they look at is their portfolio.
00:15:39.919 --> 00:15:46.320
And when they go to bed at night, the first thing or the last thing that they look at is whether or not their portfolio is meeting certain criteria.
00:15:46.399 --> 00:15:52.399
And people get so upset and so completely consumed living this way.
00:15:53.039 --> 00:15:54.240
Or I'll give you another example.
00:15:54.320 --> 00:15:56.399
How many of you have ever seen the show Shark Tank?
00:15:56.480 --> 00:15:57.840
You watch the show Shark Tank?
00:15:58.000 --> 00:15:59.919
It's a good wholesome family show.
00:16:00.159 --> 00:16:06.399
Entrepreneurs come on and they make pitches because they need investors to help bring their business to the next level.
00:16:06.559 --> 00:16:12.879
And so there's a team of usually five investors that one's a billionaire, the rest of them are multimillionaires.
00:16:13.200 --> 00:16:21.840
And so they're gonna ask questions and decide if they want to partner with this entrepreneur and whatever it is that they're proposing to sell.
00:16:22.000 --> 00:16:22.879
And I love the show.
00:16:22.960 --> 00:16:29.600
It's a family-friendly show that my family we can all watch together, but there's one part of the show that I don't like.
00:16:29.840 --> 00:16:32.720
Can I tell you this morning the part of the show that I really don't like?
00:16:33.440 --> 00:16:44.879
The part that I don't like is this is that these very rich people, the sharks, as they're called, will often flash back to when they first started out.
00:16:45.279 --> 00:16:53.600
And they'll say things like this Well, when I was this age, or when I was first starting my company, I didn't sleep.
00:16:53.840 --> 00:17:04.480
I worked seven days a week, and I work 24 hours a day, and I, I, I, I, and I had to sacrifice, and I had to eat hot dogs every single day, and blah, blah, blah.
00:17:04.640 --> 00:17:11.279
And now look at me, I'm a billionaire, and I got my own private jet, and I got multiple houses, and me, me, me, me, me.
00:17:12.799 --> 00:17:15.599
And I look at my kids and I wonder, are they absorbing this?
00:17:15.680 --> 00:17:18.720
Do they think that this is the American dream?
00:17:19.200 --> 00:17:27.200
That when you're in your teens or your twenties or your thirties or your forties, that nothing else matters but the almighty American dollar.
00:17:27.599 --> 00:17:30.079
And you should pursue that at all costs.
00:17:30.319 --> 00:17:38.079
Even if it means sacrificing your marriage and sacrificing your kids and sacrificing your family and sacrificing the people that you go to church with.
00:17:38.400 --> 00:17:45.920
Because eventually you'll get to a point where you can be just like them and sit back and just enjoy the rest of your life.
00:17:46.079 --> 00:17:48.480
I mean, is that really what's supposed to happen?
00:17:48.799 --> 00:17:52.720
It seems that the Bible has laid out rhythms for us.
00:17:53.200 --> 00:18:01.279
That there's these rhythms of life that we are to pursue, and part of it is rest, which you're going to see in a moment.
00:18:01.680 --> 00:18:06.240
Now, there's a story that's kind of fascinating that came out of World War II.
00:18:07.039 --> 00:18:19.200
Where people were putting being put into these camps as their houses were being destroyed, and you know the havoc that war can cause a nation, in particular children.
00:18:19.599 --> 00:18:28.000
And there was an aid worker that was noticing something that was prevalent in one of the camps, in that the kids were having a hard time sleeping at night.
00:18:28.319 --> 00:18:29.680
Of course, they're living in fear.
00:18:29.759 --> 00:18:33.200
Of course, they don't know uh what's gonna happen to them and their family.
00:18:33.359 --> 00:18:36.240
They don't know if they're gonna have a meal the next day.
00:18:36.480 --> 00:18:43.519
And for some reason, this aid worker figured out how to help the kids sleep at night, and this was the remedy.
00:18:43.839 --> 00:18:50.240
Is they gave every single kid a small piece of bread that they could hold on to.
00:18:50.559 --> 00:18:52.640
Not to eat, just to hold on to.
00:18:52.880 --> 00:19:06.960
And because that kid held on to that piece of bread, somehow that gave them confidence and assurance that if they woke up the next day, they would still be holding on to that bread and they wouldn't be hungry.
00:19:08.319 --> 00:19:17.039
And yet in the text today, God is asking his children to do the exact opposite, to give up everything.
00:19:17.759 --> 00:19:22.960
Because what we find out is that there were some that paid no attention to Moses.
00:19:23.920 --> 00:19:25.039
Bad idea.
00:19:25.279 --> 00:19:34.960
They kept part of it until the morning, and wouldn't you know, the stuff that they kept that they didn't dispose of, maggots were all over it, and it began to smell.
00:19:35.599 --> 00:19:41.920
Which I'm wondering, did Moses know when he was walking by their tents who the smelly tents were and who the you know non-smelly tents were?
00:19:42.079 --> 00:19:44.799
Like, was it just obvious to everybody else?
00:19:45.039 --> 00:19:47.359
And look at his response as their leader.
00:19:47.519 --> 00:19:54.079
He's upset with them, he's frustrated with them, he's following the same rules that they have to follow as well.
00:19:54.559 --> 00:20:06.000
Well, again, on the sixth day they gathered twice as much, two omers for each person, and this time you find the leaders actually going to Moses and reporting to him this miracle.
00:20:06.079 --> 00:20:06.960
This it's crazy.
00:20:07.039 --> 00:20:12.559
We go out and we gather the same amount, but yet God is the one that keeps blessing it and multiplying it.
00:20:12.799 --> 00:20:16.160
And so he says to them, This is what the Lord commanded.
00:20:16.319 --> 00:20:21.599
Tomorrow is to be a day of Sabbath rest, a holy Sabbath to the Lord.
00:20:21.759 --> 00:20:26.000
So bake what you want to bake and boil what you want to boil.
00:20:26.240 --> 00:20:27.680
Those are great instructions.
00:20:27.759 --> 00:20:31.039
All of you that love cooking, spend all day in the kitchen.
00:20:31.279 --> 00:20:37.519
Bake it all, boil it all, save whatever is left, and keep it until the morning.
00:20:38.319 --> 00:20:41.119
So now the instructions are reversed.
00:20:41.519 --> 00:20:53.039
Now he's telling them, and they would have known, this would have gotten out, that those that kept the food before, it spoiled and was full of worms, and now all of a sudden he's saying, Late, now this time you're going to keep it.
00:20:53.279 --> 00:20:57.680
And wouldn't you know that most of them did what Moses commanded them to do?
00:20:57.839 --> 00:21:03.759
And when they woke up the next day, the food that they had, it didn't stink, and there weren't maggots in it.
00:21:04.079 --> 00:21:07.279
And so, because of that, Moses is telling them, eat it.
00:21:07.599 --> 00:21:11.759
God is providing for you even on the seventh day.
00:21:12.079 --> 00:21:15.680
See, God could have told them, hey, you know what, you're just gonna take a day to fast.
00:21:16.000 --> 00:21:19.039
Many of you said it's 40 plus days you can go without food.
00:21:19.200 --> 00:21:21.279
They got water, they just don't have food.
00:21:21.519 --> 00:21:29.119
And yet God is so merciful that he's allowing them to continue to have food and nourishment for their bodies even on the Sabbath.
00:21:29.440 --> 00:21:31.200
Today is a Sabbath to the Lord.
00:21:31.359 --> 00:21:33.680
You are you are not gonna find any on the ground.
00:21:33.839 --> 00:21:36.559
By the way, here's a warning: it's pointless to go out.
00:21:36.799 --> 00:21:42.640
Six days you're to gather, and every time the seventh day comes around, there's not going to be anything for you to gather.
00:21:42.799 --> 00:21:45.920
I'm God, and I'm not gonna produce the food for you.
00:21:46.640 --> 00:21:48.240
And so I was thinking about this.
00:21:48.400 --> 00:21:53.519
Why is God so insistent on his people resting?
00:21:55.279 --> 00:21:56.960
Why does he want us to rest?
00:22:00.000 --> 00:22:02.799
Why aren't we just all workaholics?
00:22:04.799 --> 00:22:12.720
Some of you, you're married to a workaholic, and you're not a workaholic, and there's a little friction in your marriage.
00:22:16.559 --> 00:22:18.720
We're kind of conditioned this way.
00:22:19.680 --> 00:22:28.880
Our society teaches and rewards this kind of system for never knowing how to stop and take a break.
00:22:29.200 --> 00:22:41.519
I remember back three years ago, we were going through Genesis and we were in the beginning of Genesis, going through the creation account, and we were talking about God making the world in six days, and then what did God Almighty do on the seventh day?
00:22:42.400 --> 00:22:51.039
And do you know I still remember that after that service, people were upset with me and told me to stop telling people to take breaks?
00:22:52.400 --> 00:22:56.640
Because this is how much of a spiritual issue it is for you and for me.
00:22:56.799 --> 00:22:57.839
Nope, I gotta do more.
00:22:57.920 --> 00:22:59.039
Nope, I can't take a break.
00:22:59.119 --> 00:23:00.799
No, I cannot rest.
00:23:01.119 --> 00:23:05.359
Why do we resist the rest that God gives us?
00:23:06.480 --> 00:23:10.720
I'll tell you, this has been a struggle of mine for my entire life.
00:23:11.359 --> 00:23:13.920
I've always been a workaholic.
00:23:14.000 --> 00:23:17.440
I've always struggled to have the proper margins in my life.
00:23:17.680 --> 00:23:27.440
Thanks be to God, He gave me a wife who has helped slow me down to appreciate the other things that this world has to offer.
00:23:28.000 --> 00:23:32.720
I can go all the way back to 18 years ago when we first got married.
00:23:32.960 --> 00:23:36.960
And we would argue and bicker about what we should do on vacation.
00:23:37.359 --> 00:23:44.960
Because up to that point, I just figured when you go on vacation, it was to go and to do sightseeing and to learn more and to be active.
00:23:45.200 --> 00:23:54.799
And her version of a vacation was to go to a beach and to put a put a chair in the sand and then you just sit there for like eight hours.
00:23:57.359 --> 00:23:59.680
And my version of that was my interpretation.
00:23:59.920 --> 00:24:01.119
That's such a waste of time.
00:24:01.279 --> 00:24:02.400
Who would ever do that?
00:24:02.559 --> 00:24:08.880
You could be productive, you could be learning, you could be growing, you could be making more money somewhere.
00:24:10.640 --> 00:24:24.880
And I'm so thankful that over time I finally learned to appreciate sitting in a chair without a laptop or a cell phone because she takes it away on my vacations now.
00:24:26.079 --> 00:24:38.480
And all you hear are the birds and the crashing of the waves, and you can feel the breeze across your face.
00:24:39.839 --> 00:24:50.960
And literally having your body decompressed and your mind actually resting long enough to realize that your body needs rest.
00:24:51.839 --> 00:24:53.279
My body needs rest.
00:24:53.519 --> 00:24:55.599
Your body needs rest.
00:24:56.480 --> 00:25:00.640
Why do we resist the rest that God gives us?
00:25:01.680 --> 00:25:04.000
And what are we modeling for this next generation?
00:25:04.559 --> 00:25:05.680
Next generation.
00:25:06.400 --> 00:25:16.400
It's fascinating because even though He gives them this command, and even though they had food for day seven, some of them that wasn't good enough, and so some of them actually went out on that seventh day.
00:25:16.640 --> 00:25:18.400
And look at what it says.
00:25:18.720 --> 00:25:24.240
They wandered aimlessly in the wilderness, and it was completely pointless.
00:25:25.200 --> 00:25:27.279
You wonder how long they actually wandered around for?
00:25:27.359 --> 00:25:29.200
How long do you think they wandered around for?
00:25:29.759 --> 00:25:30.559
An hour?
00:25:31.519 --> 00:25:37.440
You think some of them were so stinking stubborn and they were out there for like six hours, seven hours, eight hours?
00:25:37.839 --> 00:25:39.039
I'm gonna find food.
00:25:39.200 --> 00:25:39.920
You don't need food.
00:25:40.079 --> 00:25:41.200
You already got food.
00:25:41.519 --> 00:25:44.400
God already doubled it for you on day six.
00:25:44.960 --> 00:25:46.880
We are so stubborn.
00:25:47.519 --> 00:25:49.279
We are so stubborn as human beings.
00:25:49.359 --> 00:25:55.039
We often try to do things on our own outside the will of our heavenly Father.
00:25:55.839 --> 00:26:01.279
And maybe today God's using this text to say to you what he said to me.
00:26:01.519 --> 00:26:03.920
You gotta take a deep breath.
00:26:04.880 --> 00:26:09.680
You gotta remember I'm the one that supplies all of your needs, not just some of them.
00:26:09.839 --> 00:26:11.440
I don't need your help, Tim.
00:26:11.680 --> 00:26:17.039
I provide all of your needs according to my riches and according to my glory.
00:26:17.839 --> 00:26:29.839
We are sustained on this earth, make no mistake, because we have a heavenly Father who loves us, who has given us his Son, Jesus Christ, to be our Sabbath.
00:26:30.160 --> 00:26:30.799
Amen?
00:26:31.359 --> 00:26:39.039
This is why Jesus said to the people that were gathered around him, and he says it to us today.
00:26:39.279 --> 00:26:47.680
I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.
00:26:47.920 --> 00:26:50.000
And who is that true bread from heaven?
00:26:50.960 --> 00:26:51.920
Jesus.
00:26:52.640 --> 00:26:54.160
Yes, we follow the Sabbath.
00:26:54.400 --> 00:26:57.119
Being in church, do you know being here today is rest?
00:26:57.839 --> 00:27:04.079
Singing songs of worship, praying, seeing a baptism, participating in holy communion.
00:27:04.319 --> 00:27:08.960
All of those are gifts of God, from God, through Jesus.
00:27:09.119 --> 00:27:12.640
Those are all rest because Jesus is our Sabbath rest.
00:27:12.799 --> 00:27:18.720
All of those are just the blessings that come from having Him be the center of our lives.
00:27:19.200 --> 00:27:21.599
That's why it's difficult in the day and age we live.
00:27:21.680 --> 00:27:28.160
People have activities, people have conflicts, people have all sorts of things that are vying for their attention.
00:27:28.400 --> 00:27:30.079
And sometimes it's our own fault.
00:27:30.240 --> 00:27:34.960
Sometimes it's the act of the devil, sometimes it is the world that's pulling us in these different directions.
00:27:35.119 --> 00:27:43.759
And I just believe that God today is calling us back to this lifestyle, this rhythm of how He created us and knows what is best for us.
00:27:44.000 --> 00:27:44.640
Amen.
00:27:44.960 --> 00:27:47.200
This is why we pray these words in the Lord's Prayer.
00:27:47.440 --> 00:27:51.119
Give us this day our daily bread.
00:27:52.000 --> 00:27:55.519
Not our weekly bread or a monthly bread or a yearly bread.
00:27:55.759 --> 00:27:56.960
Daily bread.
00:27:57.440 --> 00:28:00.960
And this isn't the physical bread that he gives us.
00:28:01.119 --> 00:28:08.799
This is the spiritual bread that comes down from on high for you or and to me to nourish our souls.
00:28:09.039 --> 00:28:14.480
To remind us how much we are loved by God and that he will care for us.
00:28:16.160 --> 00:28:21.039
We've got to stop stressing and stop worrying about all these things that we get ourselves so fixated on.
00:28:22.000 --> 00:28:23.759
And finally, what does he do?
00:28:24.079 --> 00:28:29.440
He wants to give them this object lesson that they're gonna carry now from this point forward.
00:28:29.599 --> 00:28:39.359
And he tells them to take some of this manna and to put it in a jar and they're to use that so that they can teach their kids, hey, God's the one that provided for us.
00:28:39.519 --> 00:28:44.319
God is the one that got us through this time in this place in history.
00:28:44.880 --> 00:28:49.440
And then finally, the last verse today it says, The Israelites ate manna for how long?
00:28:51.200 --> 00:28:52.240
Oh man.
00:28:53.200 --> 00:28:55.839
I mean, if it was sourdough bread, I get it.
00:28:56.720 --> 00:28:58.640
But 40 years.
00:28:58.960 --> 00:28:59.599
Wow.
00:29:00.960 --> 00:29:05.599
Until the land was settled, until they reached the border of Canaan.
00:29:06.079 --> 00:29:10.640
This last verse is just a prophetic verse because they're not to the promised land yet.
00:29:10.720 --> 00:29:15.440
There's still some more churns and some obstacles waiting for them.
00:29:15.759 --> 00:29:19.200
This is just, again, a reminder of what is to come.
00:29:19.920 --> 00:29:22.960
And so let me ask you this morning: what is it for you?
00:29:23.599 --> 00:29:25.680
What is holding you back?
00:29:26.400 --> 00:29:31.680
Where is God speaking to you today through his word that maybe you need to let go?
00:29:31.920 --> 00:29:45.680
And you need to trust that God is at work in your life and in your marriage and with your family and with your job and with your bank account.
00:29:46.640 --> 00:30:00.400
That whatever circumstance you are facing right now, in this moment, on this day, he sees you, he knows you, and he is already orchestrating things that you don't even need to worry about.
00:30:02.079 --> 00:30:06.960
Instead, if God has blessed you with somebody else that's telling you to slow down, would you listen to them?
00:30:07.599 --> 00:30:15.359
Maybe some of you today, this is what God is saying to you, is that you actually need to take a day off of work this week.
00:30:20.880 --> 00:30:23.759
And do nothing the entire day.
00:30:25.680 --> 00:30:27.279
I can't do that.
00:30:28.079 --> 00:30:33.920
Maybe the most holy thing that you could do this week is actually get eight hours of sleep one night.
00:30:35.519 --> 00:30:45.039
Maybe God is challenging you to stop micromanaging everybody else in your life that's resting, that gets this.
00:30:45.599 --> 00:30:50.960
And maybe God is inviting you into that rest because he knows that's what's best for you.
00:30:51.279 --> 00:30:59.200
Wherever you find yourself today, know he sees you, he forgives you, he loves you, and he wants what's best for you.
00:30:59.440 --> 00:30:59.920
Amen.
00:31:00.240 --> 00:31:02.240
Will you bow your heads and close your eyes with me this morning?
00:31:02.400 --> 00:31:05.359
Heavenly Father, I thank you for all my friends here today.
00:31:06.799 --> 00:31:12.480
God, and once again, just an ancient tax, but yet so relevant for our lives.
00:31:12.880 --> 00:31:30.079
God, even the way that it convicted me over and over again this week, and God, the opportunity to preach and present your holy word to this gathered body of believers, knowing and trusting that you're at work, and that it's all ultimately, God, for our good.
00:31:31.440 --> 00:31:33.200
So be with my friends today.
00:31:33.440 --> 00:31:47.759
God help us as we go into another week to surrender to you, to walk in trusting you are at work, and you will provide every single one of the needs that we have.
00:31:48.400 --> 00:31:53.039
So, God, now as we close our time together by singing this song, bless God.
00:31:53.279 --> 00:32:04.079
May the words of our mouth as we sing these songs be a testament of our faith and our hope and our trust in you, our one true God who is our provider.
00:32:04.319 --> 00:32:08.400
We love you, we thank you, we pray all these things in your most holy and precious name.
00:32:08.640 --> 00:32:09.279
Amen.
00:32:09.519 --> 00:32:12.079
Will we please stand and let's sing this song together?
