INFORMAZIONI SU QUESTO EPISODIO
YouTube Rewind 2011 was the second installment of YouTube’s end-of-year retrospective series. It repeated the format from the previous year, counting down the top 10 most viewed videos on the platform in 2011. However, it introduced an element that would become central to Rewind, a YouTuber cameo, with Friday songstress Rebecca Black playing the role as host.
We discuss how the popular videos shifted from creator channels in 2010, to more generic talking animal slop in 2011. While OG YouTubers like The Lonely Island are featured on the list, and creators like Jenna Marbles and Smosh are shown in the video montage, there’s definitely a less ‘YouTube’ feel to the 2011 top 10. It’s easy to theorise that YouTube themselves agreed, given they moved away from the countdown format the following year.
How do you feel about 2011 Rewind? Do you prefer the countdown format, or the YouTuber cameo music video style of later Rewinds?
