I made iron using the old blower variant but using a larger diameter fan (30 cm rather than 25 cm). I did a longer smelt and a shorter smelt. The long smelt made 10 g of iron but the short smelt made 14 g sugesting that multiple shorter duration smelts may be more effective at producing iron rather than one long smelt. The iron was then put into a knife shaped mold and placed in a forge under a flattened tuyere to spread the blast ino a sheet. The iron in the mold partially welded and fused but didn\'t completely melt and it was broken in the middle. I put this down to the mold being too far under the tuyere blast as the coals above got white hot. I\'m counting this as a partial sucess because the result could still be sharpened into some type of tool. The iron knife I made previously this was melted much more completely in its mold and further exeperimentation would be needed to re-learn this method of insitu casting. #primitivetechnology #iron #handmade #engineering The ultimate challenge is seeing how far human ingenuity can go. The challenge is simple but strict: If I need a fire, I make a fire stick. If I need an axe, I shape a stone. Every hut is built solely from trees, mud, and rocks. I don\'t live in the wild, but I love discovering just how far we can go using only natural materials and human effort. I fired 2 batches of barrel roof tiles to form the roof of the hut built in the previous episode. Then I cut the purlins for the roof and plastered them onto the gable end walls. The tiles were then put in place to start forming the roof. So far the walls are suporting the weight of the roof and ti…
I built a permanent wall structure using homemade fired bricks and a refined mud mortar mix. Watch the entire ancient engineering process from raw earth to finished masonry. The finished mortar gives the wall a clean, sturdy bond. #PrimitiveTechnology #building #mortar #firedbricks #engineering …
I tested a variant of roof tie where it is a flat trapesoid with curved up sides to test if I could fit more of them into a kiln and have them cover more roof area than the curved barrel tiles. It turns out that the reason curved roof tiles are so comon is because the shape gives a long tile more…
